RESEARCH POINTS TO RISE IN CAR MARKET FOR 2014 THERE are signs that the market for new and used cars may pick up in 2014 according to research carried out by the AA. In a survey of over 26,000 car users carried out in November, 2.9% of respondents said that they would definitely buy a new car in 2014; 6.7% said that they might do so. “Those are surprisingly good numbers.” Says Director of Consumer Affairs Conor Faughnan. “There are 1.88 million private cars in Ireland currently but new sales have been very weak in recent years with only around 75,000 new registrations for 2013. Our survey would imply a lift on that figure for next year.” Based on the responses to the AA Consumer Panel Survey it would equate to 54,500 definite new car sales for next year with a further 126,000 who ‘might’ buy a new vehicle. “The unknown is how many of those ‘maybes’ will actually convert.” Says Faughnan. “But even if only a quarter of them do so that would still equate to around 85,000 new sales next year which would be a substantial uplift.” This is good news for the industry but also for the Irish fleet in general. Car sales have collapsed from 186,000 in 2007 to less than half of that amount in the recession years that followed. This has meant a general ageing and deterioration of the Irish car fleet with the average age of an Irish car now nearly 9 years old. The AA is seeing first hand evidence of this in increasing numbers of break-downs associated with aging cars. “We would certainly like to see an increase in car sales, not just because it would indicate an upturn in the economy but because it would mean an improvement in the standards of cars out there. The AA does not mind being busy but the older a car gets the more you run the risk of a vehicle defect causing an accident.” The AA research also pointed to a big demand for second hand cars next

year. 5.2% of respondents said they would definitely buy a second-hand car next year and 17.6% said that they might do so. “In normal circumstances there are about 2.5 second-hand car sales for every new car sale so those figures are consistent.” Says Faughnan. “The AA’s own Vehicle Inspection Service does detailed pre-purchase inspections of second-hand cars; we are already seeing an increase in enquiries which supports the research findings and makes us confident in predicting that sales will be up next year.” “Granted this is from a very low recession-era base and we are certainly not talking about a return to Tigerstyle numbers but it is positive all the same.”

Advice for buying a second-hand car • Look before you buy – It may seem obvious, but having a look at the car during daylight hours and take it for a test drive. • Beware the private sale – Cars sold privately may cost less but if it breaks down a few months after you buy it, you’re on your own. • Don’t rush into it – Car salesmen can often use lines like “I have someone else looking at this car”, “I don’t know if we’ll still have it next week” or “if you buy it now, you’ll have it for the weekend”. Don’t let them pressure you into buying before you’re certain it’s what you want. • Check out the competition – You may have a garage that you ‘always go to’ but it really can pay off if you shop around. • Go further afield - Don’t be afraid to travel further afield for a better price. Tell each garage you’re shopping around and if you fancy one car but prefer the other car’s price, tell the dealer – you might get them to come down on price.

TWELVE HUNGRY MONTHS TO FEED Written By Martina Delaney SO how was your Christmas? Did you have the time of your life or are you scarred for life? Whichever way it was one thing we have now is the gift of a brand new year. Twelve hungry months to feed! If you are doing well and in good health the fifty two weeks ahead are loaded with possibilities. If you are ill, out of work with things on a steady decline at least there is the gift of hope. One way or the other we all have new beginnings and a clean start on a brand new calendar and we dare to dream. If last year wasn’t the best, virtually take it in your hands like the used wrapping paper you dumped the other day. Crumble it up tight in your fists and discard it to where it belongs. Burn it if you can, it’s not for recycling. As for the occasional good times you recall, polish them off and place them in the safe keeping of your mind ready to be taken out again whenever you wish. For now it’s new beginnings, hopes and dreams. You have got your glossy new calendar, 365 days with boxes of precious hours for you to fill. You’ve got your new

diary with plans to keep it neat and filled with positivity, possibility and progress. You are focusing on betterment throughout. Isn’t it exciting? Who knows what the New Year holds? We look forward with anticipation and rather than irritating ourselves with self defeating resolutions and unrealistic goals too impossible to keep we are going to strive for sense and sensibility in knowing what is best for us all round. It’s okay to write out a list of plans but we must keep them within the bounds of possibility and not mountainous targets ready and waiting to kick us back down the hill of life at the drop of a hat. If you are focusing on gaining your strength back after a hard knock take baby steps with these new days. January is only a baby itself and like our selves it has to creep before it walks. With this clean slate of New Year we can focus on our choices and decisions and pray we make the right ones. Relinquish old negativity; it eats away your soul. Each and every one of us in this

world are soldiers combating life’s adversities daily and our aim is to survive the trials and learn to glory more in the tribulations. We aim to train our mind towards healing and affirming the wants and needs of our soul. Too often we forget to pat ourselves on the back. This doesn’t mean we are being selfish, it’s more we are being self aware as opposed to self obsessed. And in doing this we are better able to consider every one else in the long run. So hang your new calendars and sharpen your pencils for those bare day diaries. Fill each one with proactivity, magic and wonder if you can. May we be blessed with the ways and means to fill each new born month with hard work, good deeds and much love in the best of health under a beam of our higher power guidance and may we prosper in all that we do. I wish you all an all encompassing, glorious, peaceful, happy and holy New Year and may all your dreams come true.

ECB LAUNCH NEW TEN EURO NOTE THE European Central Bank unveiled its new 10-euro banknotes, sturdier and less susceptible to counterfeiting, that will come into circulation from late September. The ECB is gradually phasing in a brand new series of banknotes, all featuring the Greek mythological figure of Europa, to replace the original design in use since the euro became a physical currency in 2002. The new five-euro notes were already launched last May and the 10-euro notes will follow in September. The other denomination notes -- 20-euro, 50-euro, 100-euro, 200-euro and 500-euro -- will follow later. “The new 10-euro banknote of the Europa series will start circulating on September 23,” the ECB said in a statement. Conversely, the current euro banknotes issued in January 2002 are gradually being pulled from circulation. Like the new five-euro notes, the 10-euro notes will benefit from advances in banknote technology. Its security features have been enhanced, making them “even more resistant to counterfeiting,” the ECB said. The figure of Europa -- from which Europe takes its name -- will be featured in the hologram and watermark of the new notes. In Greek mythology, Europa was a Phoenician princess abducted to Crete by the god Zeus. Other security features include a security thread and an emerald number in the bottom left hand corner. The ECB is responsible for printing the euro banknotes, while euro coins are minted by the national mints. According to new data compiled by the ECB, the number of

counterfeit euro banknotes seized in the second half of last year was up over the preceding six months. A total of 353,000 counterfeit euro banknotes were withdrawn from circulation in the period from July to December, up 11.4 per cent over the period from January to June. However, the number of counterfeits “remains very low in comparison with the number of genuine banknotes in circulation during that period (over 15 billion),” the ECB insisted. In addition to the enhanced security, the new banknotes will be sturdier, thanks to a protective coating. “This means that (the notes) will need to be replaced less frequently, thus lowering costs and reducing the impact on the environment,” the central bank explained. The size, format and architectural motif on the note remain the same as the old note, but the colour is more vivid. The introduction of the new five-euro notes last year experienced a number of technical problems with vending machines refusing to accept them. A spokesman for the national rail operator Deutsche Bahn said that software updates for recognising the new banknotes had been delayed for around half of the 7,000 ticket machines around the country. Further software updates would also be needed for the new 10-euro notes, the spokesman said. In Berlin, the BVG regional transport operator said that around one third of ticket machines were still not able to accept the new five-euro notes.

TEACHERS WANT P.E. AS EXAM SUBJECT

Written By Emily Bodkin EIGHT out of ten teachers would prefer if physical education classes were assessed, according to a new Aviva Health insurance survey. Answered by 250 teachers from schools across 13 counties, the results showed that the majority of them wanted to see PE become an exam subject. The survey figures were released as part of the Schools Fitness Challenge initiative which aims to increase the activity levels of junior cycle students. The challenge will involve exercises that will target student’s cardiovascular fitness. Taking place over six weeks, the initiative will be monitored by Professor Niall Moyna of the Centre for Preventive Medicine at Dublin City University and Dr Sarah Kelly of IT Carlow. This challenge comes as Ireland is facing an obesity crisis among its youth. In last year’s Growing Up in Ireland study, it was revealed that 19% of three year olds were overweight and 6% were obese. In an article by the Journal.ie, it was stated that, ‘Only 12% of 10-18 year olds in Ireland meet the Department of Health and Children physical activity recommendations of at least one hour of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity per day.’ One person supporting the challenge is Irish track and field athlete David Gillick

who, in an interview with the Journal.ie, believes children’s activity levels need to be at a higher level. “With the current obesity rates among kids, [it’s clear that] on a day-to-day basis, when they come home from school, some will probably just sit in front of the TV. So I think we really have to make an effort in the schools to help shape our kids’ futures — not only from a sporting perspective, but also in terms of life skills. With regard to the Aviva initiative, it’s a great way of pushing it and telling people that we need to commit more of an effort as adults for the next generation. And PE teachers who are at the forefront of it on a day-to-day basis, when you hear that they’re all pushing it as well, it makes a lot of sense. “From the curriculum point of view, if you’re doing English or Maths, it’s all very laid out in terms of what to cover and what you do each week. With sports maybe some people think ‘it’s sport, just go out and kick a ball around for an hour’. I think there needs to be a plan put in place where we’re covering all aspects of sport, not just the main sports. And through this initiative, if a school wins, they get cash and they can go and buy various sports equipment. So overall, it’s a great initiative and hopefully, it’ll gather a bit of pace.”

The new grant operation is part of the 2014 Budget which aims to help with school costs according to the Minister for Education, Ruairi Quinn. Speaking at the announcement, the Minister said he had received €15 million for schools to facilitate the scheme.

Roll up the baby blankets and secure with a safety pin. Roll up each nappy separately and secure with an elastic band. Plan your ‘cake layers’ – for a large nappy layer you’ll need approximately 20 nappies/ large blanket rolled up and shaped into a circle, for smaller layers you’ll need only about 6 nappies or a small blanket. Assemble on the tray to make lifting and transporting the cake easier. Separate the layers with colourful burp clothes to look like icing. Irish Car Awards Announce The Winners

THE Citroen C4 Picasso has been voted Continental Irish Car of the Year for 2014 by the members of the Irish Motoring Writers Association. The winner was revealed at an awards ceremony in Dublin last week.The Citroen C4 Picasso received 377 votes from the Irish Motoring Writers Association jurors, just ahead of the Volkswagen Golf (364 votes) and the Mazda6 (327 votes).

It is the third time that Citroen has taken the overall Continental Irish Car of the Year title, after the Citroen Xsara (1998) and the Citroen C5 (2009).Members of the IMWA awarded their votes on the basis of key criteria, including safety, equipment level, fuel economy, comfort, innovation, practicality, ride and road-holding.It combines excellent driving qualities with a range of truly impressive technologies, and is a credit

Which One Is Better? V.s Xbox One vs PS4: Dimensions & design Looks do matter when you're buying expensive electronics that are going to sit front and center in your living room entertainment system for the next ten years. The hardware specs are comparable, but Microsoft and Sony really contrasted when it came to the designs of Xbox One and PS4. Xbox One is a menacing gaming beast that looks like a black Monolith straight out of 2001: A Space Odyssey. It's 13.5 in x 10.4 in x 3.2 in and it's completely filled with vents. No Red Ring of Death this time around. It towers over everything (though you're advised not to stand it up vertically), and completely dwarfs our smallest electronics like the app-filled Chromecast. The PS4 presents a sleeker design that has a unique angular shape to it. The widest regions of Sony's half-matte, half-gloss machine are 10.8 in x 12 in x 2 in. That's fairly compact, especially when weighed against the Xbox One. And on the subject of weight, PS4 is 2.75 kg while Xbox One is a more hefty 3.56 kg. PS4 also hides its ports rather well, this makes it difficult to plug cables into the back of the system in a pinch.

PS4 vs Xbox One CPU, graphics chip comparison It’s what’s inside that counts, and even though Nvidia thinks these specs are comparable to a low-end CPU, Xbox One and PS4 multiply the power of Xbox 360 and PS3. More importantly, they boast smarter designs internally, drawing from mistakes made last generation. Nvidia rival AMD can be found inside both systems. Xbox One has a custom 1.75GHz AMD 8-core CPU, a last-minute upgrade over its original 1.6GHz processor. That’s actually the CPU speed thought to be behind PS4, which contains a similar custom AMD 8-core CPU with x86 based architecture. Sony hasn’t confirmed the official speed. This would represent a roughly 10% increase in processing power for Xbox One, though it’s certainly going to be some time before developers can fully take advantage of accelerated hardware on either side of the console war. The opposite is true when it comes to the graphics processor.

It’s not the amount of memory that has everyone ready to fight about RAM - both Xbox One and PS4 contain a meaty 8GB of RAM - it’s the type of memory used. Xbox One has 8GB of DDR3 RAM, while PS4 has a distinct advantage with faster 8GB GDDR5 memory. But wait, there’s more. Both consoles require a portion of the RAM to run the operating system. PS4 reserves up to 3.5GB of memory for its operating system, leaving developers with 4.5GB, according to documentation. They can sometimes access an extra 1GB of “flexible” memory when it’s available, but that’s not guaranteed. Xbox One’s “guaranteed memory” amounts to a slightly higher 5GB for developers, as Microsoft’s multi-layered operating system takes up a steady 3GB. It eeks out a 0.5GB win with more developeraccessible memory than PS4, unless you factor in Sony’s 1GB of “flexible” memory at times. Then it’s 0.5GB less. More clear cut is the wireless connectivity situation. PS4 makes room for Gigabit Ethernet and 802.11 WiFi bands b/g/n, while Xbox One has a clear advantage by including the older 802.11a band and both 2.4GHz and 5GHz channels. PS4 limits connections to 2.4GHz, which is likely to have more interference. The hard drive situation is a toss up. PS4 comes with a 500GB spinning hard drive and supports user-replaceable internal drives. Xbox One’s 500GB spinning hard drive cannot be upgraded even though an Xbox One teardown found that it’s a standard-looking hard drive. Instead, users will eventually be able to add external storage to the monster-sized system, something that isn’t supported by Sony.

Xbox One Kinect vs PS4 Camera One company is betting on its camera more than the other, though. Microsoft designed its 1080p Kinect to keep track of up to six skeletons at once and process 2GB of data per second. It can pick up heart rates, facial expressions and 25 joints, thumbs included. More importantly for some frustrated users of the previous Kinect, Kinect 2.0 can now detect people as close as three feet from its industrial-sized camera lense. Its 60% wider field of vision compared to the Xbox 360 Kinect remedies the annoying “stand 6 feet away” error messages we experienced last time around. The PS4 Camera, formerly called the PlayStation Eye, isn’t as monstrous and that’s a good thing for the most part. It’s easy to appreciate the compact size of this camera bar that still managed to feature two 1280x800px cameras. However, the lightweight construction means that the cord sometimes dictates where the camera is pointed on its flimsy stand. Like the Xbox One Kinect, we’re still waiting for more PS4 games to take advantage of Sony’s new camera. Its ability to recognize faces for logins and receive voice commands for hands-free shortcuts like the Xbox One is convenient. But when it comes to games, we can only toy around with the Sony’s preloaded The Playroom augmented reality game for so long.

The Controllers The Xbox One controller vs PS4 DualShock 4 controller debate won’t be won any time soon, mostly because gamers’ already have a locked-in preference. The good news is that both feel more comfortable than their predecessors. The Xbox One vs Xbox 360 gamepad comparison illustrates some of the 40 design innovations. The tweaked D-Pad on the bottom left and extra rumble effect via “Impulse Triggers” in the analog shoulder buttons make Xbox One’s controller nearly perfect. Man on the Rocks is the upcoming twenty-fifth studio album by British musician Mike Oldfield and his first in over 6 years. Oldfield is a multi-instrumentalist musician and composer, working a style that blends progressive rock with such genres as folk, ethnic or world music, classical music, electronic music, New Age, and more recently, dance.He is best known for his 1973 hit album Tubular Bells, which launched Virgin Records, and for his 1983 hit single “Moonlight Shadow”. The album was produced by Stephen Lipson (Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Cher, Grace Jones, Annie Lennox, Pet Shop Boys) together with Oldfield.

So Long, See You Tomorro is the 4th album from English indie rock band Bombay Bicycle Club. Its the follow up to the very successful 2011 album “A Different Kind of Fix”. Frontman Jack Steadman revealed how exploring the globe helped him personally, as well as providing influence for new songs. “I think the travelling gave me a sense of wellbeing rather than any direct musical influence, we were getting more inspired by samples. They become the springboard for your song and, whether it’s an Indian song or something with Thai chanting” The album artwork was inspired by the 19th century photographer Eadweard Muybridge.

Little Red is the second studio album by British dubstep, R&B, funky, house and UK garage singer Katy B. The first single from this album, “What Love Is Made Of ”, was released on 7 July 2013. The song charted at number 21 on the UK Singles Chart. The second single “5 AM” was released on 4 November 2013. The song charted at number 14 on the UK Singles Chart. When she released the official Little Red tracklist in December “What Love Is Made Of,” was no longer included. Only time will tell if this album is as successful as her debut mercury award nominated album “On a mission” (2011).

High hopes is released on January 27th.

Alt-J Bassist Quits The Band The hunt begins for his replacement.

WORRYING news for alt-J's ever-growing legion of fans as Gwin Sainsbury, bassist/guitarist and founding member, has decided to leave the Mercury Music Prize winning band. A message posted on the band's official Twitter announced the news, reading: "With regret, Gwil is leaving alt-J. This is purely a personal decision and as our best friend we support him completely." A statement released to NME

this morning further clarifies the band's intentions to move forward. It reads: "The three remaining members of alt-J - Joe, Gus and Thom - and all at Infectious Music give their full support to Gwil and wish him only the very best for the future. Both alt-J and Infectious would like to reassure fans that the band remain excited about the future and are set to return to the studio very soon to begin work on the follow-up to

2012's Barclaycard Mercury Prize winning 'An Awesome Wave'". The Leeds band formed in 2007 and released their awardwinning debut album in 2012 and, according to keyboardist Gus Unger-Hamilton, are set to re-enter the studio in September of this year once all of their touring commitments are fulfilled.
