Minutes from the Langdale ferry terminal, Gibsons is breathtakingly beautiful and filled with enough festivals and events to keep you entertained year-round. Roberts Creek Locally known as Gumboot Nation and home to the Sunshine Coast’s oldest golf course, Roberts Creek is a thriving community of artists and artisans and a hit with outdoorsy types. Popular summer activities include mountain biking, hiking, family fun in local parks, seaside walks and water sports like kayaking, swimming and fishing. Snowshoeing and cross-country skiing in the Dakota Ridge winter recreation area prevail in the colder months. Sechelt Literally the “land between two waters,” Sechelt offers a wide variety of outdoor activities, including some of the best cold-water diving in the world, sailing, golf, mountain biking and great winter sports like cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Thomas William (Will) Roberts stakes his claim of land near the waterway that now bears his name: Roberts Creek.
Thanks to its gold, silver, copper and iron mines, Texada Island is the largest urban centre north of San Francisco.
Davis Bay & Wilson Creek Famed for its pebbled coastline, Davis Bay features smooth sandbars at low tide and great crab and salmon fishing as well as windsurfing at high tide. Summer brings the annual Davis Bay Sandcastle Competition, while in winter locals flock to the frigid waters of the Georgia Strait for the Polar Bear Swim. Looking for retail therapy? Halfmoon Bay & Secret Cove This romantic getaway is home to some of B.C.’s finest recreation and sightseeing areas, including nearby Smuggler Cove Marine Provincial Park, Halfmoon Bay and Secret Cove, all known for a talented pool of artisans and craftspeople. Earls Cove & Egmont Egmont lies at the north tip of the Southern Sunshine Coast, a short distance from the Earls Cove ferry landing. Saltery Bay Much more than a ferry landing, this is a favoured destination among scuba divers, who search the local waters for exotic marine life and treasures like Canada’s first underwater statue – the bronze “Emerald Princess” in Mermaid Cove. Families can visit for a day or camp overnight in Saltery Bay Provincial Park, which boasts ample swimming and boating amenities amid blissful views. Lund This picturesque seaside village experiences a population spike each summer as visitors boat, drive or cycle over to enjoy its charms. Among the many things to do in Lund: sea kayak to check out seals, sea lions, fish, sea stars and water fowl in nearby Copeland Islands Marine Provincial Park or paddle into world-renowned Desolation Sound Marine Park. Salmon, cod and prawn fishing abound, as do awesome First Nations cultural experiences (try a traditional canoe trip and longhouse ceremony). With the warmest waters north of the Baja Peninsula, local scuba diving boasts excellent visibility and truly abundant sea life. Texada Island Easily accessed from Powell River by ferry, Texada is a safe place to explore the outdoors thanks to an absence of cougars and bears. Loaded with wilderness trails and marine activities, this island’s a great spot to enjoy stunning scenery all year. Known as the Tet, this area northeast of Sechelt has ample cross-country ski and winter hiking trails. If you wear yourself out from all your snowy adventures, there’s overnight access at several rustic cabins along the way. Please note: while visitors are encouraged to enjoy the park, Tetrahedron is part of a local watershed and users are advised to read all regulations before heading in. env.gov.bc.ca/ bcparks/explore/parkpgs/tetrahedron
n KNUCKLEHEADS WINTER RECREATION AREA: Northern Sunshine Coasters get their winter exercise at this outdoor recreation area near Powell River. With a snowfall season from November to May, activities include tobogganing, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Terrific Trails n Suncoaster Trail: Extends south 37 kilometres (23 miles) from Earls Cove in the Southern Sunshine Coast to Halfmoon Bay. Hikers, bikers, horseback riders and ATVers can easily share this wide, relatively flat trail to enjoy great mountain views close to several communities.
n Sunshine Coast Trail: Canada’s longest hut-to-hut hiking trail stretches for 180 kilometres (112 miles) from Saltery Bay to Sarah Point near Desolation Sound Marine Park, offering breathtaking views of coastal old-growth forests. Weaving up and over mountains, take your pick of short day trips or longer journeys (it takes experienced hikers 10 days to complete the trail end to end). There are lots of tenting sites and 14 huts along the way, plus access to local B&Bs and other Powell River amenities. Highlights include the 13-kilometre (eight-mile) wheelchair-accessible loop at Inland Lake, 360-degree vistas from Tin Hat Mountain and magnificent Douglas fir and yellow cedar trees ringing Elephant Lake and Mount Troubridge – the highest point (1,300 metres / 4,265 feet) on the trail. The SCT Passport lets hikers collect unique stamps for each of the huts visited along the trail. Sunshine Coast 2018
The Sunshine Coast Trail (SCT) Passport lets hikers collect unique stamps for each of the huts on the Sunshine Coast Trail that they visit. Here’s how it works: 1. Purchase your SCT Passport for $5 at Tourism Powell River or a participating business. 2. Go hiking on the Sunshine Coast Trail and visit one of the huts along the trail. 3. Take a “selfie,” or get a friend to snap your photo, with the hut in the background. 4. When you return to Powell River, take your photo and passport to the appropriate business (each hut is linked to a specific business) to receive that hut’s unique stamp (you can also take your photo and passport to Tourism Powell River for a generic stamp). 5.Lund Once you’ve visited1 all the huts and received all your stamps, Map 15 Downtown.indd 2018-01-11 visit Tourism Powell River to receive your certificate of completion, one final stamp on your passport and entry into a draw for some great local prizes!
