Choosing a printer for your marketing and communications

By Doug Climie ou’ve determined that your next marketing initiative will have a significant print component, but you haven’t selected a supplier. Which partner will best serve your needs? As with anything you purchase, quality, service and price all matter. Yet those elements are almost a given these days, so try to find a printer who understands your objectives, listens to your challenges and makes recommendations that suit your unique needs: a company that uses format, size, paper, ink and finishing to connect and communicate effectively with your customers. Here are a few key things to consider in determining whether a printer can achieve those goals.

Y

Market position EXPERIENCE

Does the potential supplier have experience, expertise and great references in

Touring a printer’s facilities can tell you about your potential partner’s culture and capabilities

your particular sector? Does it already understand some of your challenges and opportunities? Can it provide case studies of successful solutions to similar needs? QUALITY CONTROL

Ask about the company’s quality control and colour-management standards (like G7 certification), investment in new technologies and equipment and integration of new digital and traditional print processes to ensure that you’re working with a progressive and adaptive supplier.

Sustainability RECYCLING

TOUR

Request a tour of the printer’s facilities. This is an excellent opportunity to determine the culture and capabilities of your potential partner. Web-based tools WORKFLOWS

Finding a printer that’s easy to work with and can make your project flow seamlessly is essential. Often it’s the tools of engagement that help make that happen. So ask about the company’s workflows, from file submission to proofing to final production, fulfilment and distribution. Does it have web-based tools that keep everyone on the same page at every stage and give real-time updated information and the peace of mind that goes with it? CUSTOMER DATABASE

If you are using a self-generated customer list or have purchased one to target and personalize your message, can your printer provide the variable data such as addresses, demographics, buying patterns and nearest-location maps on the short timelines you need? 14

ADPAGES/2012

Ad Pages 2012.indd 14

A printer’s ability to provide a wide range of sustainable options is a critical component of a purchasing decision. Consider post-consumer waste percentage and Forest Stewardship Council certification options as key elements of responsible paper manufacturing; increasingly, there are more affordable choices available. Equally, the certified carbon-neutrality of operations and a printer’s ability to render your own project carbon-neutral can be important considerations. ENVIRONMENTAL FOOTPRINT

Ask what initiatives the printer has embraced to provide the best possible result with the lightest environmental footprint, to assure you and your customers that they and you have made the best decision possible for the planet. Overall, don’t hesitate to ask your potential supplier what makes them different, how they add value and how they best suit your needs. Their answers will help you select the best partner to produce your all-important marketing and communication materials. Ą Doug Climie is vice-president, sales and marketing, Hemlock Printers Ltd.

An insider look at outdoor advertisng By Dean Lee hen bad advertising runs on line, on television or in cinema, you tolerate the intrusion because you know it’s helping to fund the entertainment you’re watching. Outdoor advertising is different. You could argue that outdoor ads are only getting in the way of the view if they’re done poorly. In fact, a few years ago, the world’s fourth-largest city, Sao Paulo, put into effect a near-complete ban on outdoor advertising in favour of the scenery. So how do you get the public not only to notice your campaign over the competition, but to actually like it?

W

Here are seven simple rules for garnering fans instead of hate mail. 1. DO LESS

Good design is often more about removing things than adding things, but many advertisers fall into the trap of cramming too much information into what seem to be large outdoor spaces. Be mindful that in many cases, your audience is driving past your communication. This means you need to keep your message concise to have impact. 2. BE ORIGINAL

In today’s economy, many advertisers want to play it safe. A client may want

a reference to something similar in order to have confidence that an idea is going to work before investing in it. Yet playing it safe can actually be dangerous. An idea people have seen before won’t have the same impact as something original.

complete the advertising picture mentally. An ad with a strictly informational message will be less memorable than one that makes people think. By making your advertising engaging and leaving something for the viewer to “get,” you’ll give it a better chance of being liked and remembered.

3. KNOW THE SETTING

Find out where your ad is going to be situated. The setting can play a role in the concept and make the ad go beyond the space. 4. CREATE AN EXPERIENCE

Think of ways to create an interesting experience for your audience. Make the involvement with the advertisement entertaining in some way so that the viewer feels rewarded for the time spent. 5. LEAVE A PIECE OUT

You know the smile on a kid’s face when he or she finishes a puzzle? Well, you can apply that same feeling of satisfaction by letting your audience

16

Ad Pages 2012.indd 16

6. PULL, DON’T PUSH

Don’t think of your outdoor campaign as a way to push a message on your viewers. Instead, think of ways to pull them in and make them part of your campaign. Get them to participate, play with and pass your message along to friends. After all, a brand recommendation from a friend is trusted much more than that of a corporation. 7. QUESTION RULES 1 THROUGH 7

“Rules are what the artist breaks; the memorable never emerged from a formula” – Bill Bernbach, founder of DDB Ą Dean Lee is a creative director at DDB Vancouver, helping to steer creative output for such clients as BC Hydro, BC Dairy Foundation and BCLC.

Sign language Your relationship with your supplier and planning ahead are as important as your choice of visuals

By Joel McKay igns that stand out and snag a potential client’s wandering eye are key to any communications strategy, but many a business finds it difficult to track down the right supplier to help its brand become more than a backlit catch phrase. Here’s how:

S

Plan ahead

Nicolas Slobinsky, marketing and communications manager at PacBlue Printing, Vancouver, says one of the worst mistakes a business can make is rushing into an advertising decision. Displays for a medium-sized trade Speedpro Imaging in Richmond developed signage for FarWest: working to attract new customers

A vehicle wrap, like this from SpeedPro Imaging in Richmond, can be an excellent way to advertise a business on the move

show, for example, should be planned well in advance. “By that, I mean six months [ahead], you have the creative meeting, you sit down and decide what concept you want to put out, and you contact your furniture provider and your printing provider,” he says. LeBlanc agrees: “The more time the better. Yes, you want to have the perfect sign up for your opening … but, on the other hand, you want to live with that sign for five, 10 or 15 years.” Stickhandle the basics

Make sure you’ve laid out a budget that specifies how much you’re willing to spend. Also have a clear idea of such general parameters as the category of graphic you need: ĄIs it for a trade show or a retail outlet? ĄHow long does it need to last? ĄHow best should it be displayed? Business in Vancouver Magazine Division

around, LeBlanc says that in contacting a number of display companies you should ask what they can provide. Bennett Hui, owner of Speedpro Imaging in Richmond, agrees that understanding your supplier and what it can offer is the principal step. Hui says that dozens of sign companies provide the latest displays but often forget what matters: what they’ll do for your company. “When the focus is, How do we attract customers to your trade show business, that focus is more on marketing versus just on, What products can we sell this business?,” he explains. FastSigns Vancouver developed signage for Concord Pacific’s Flagship development

Ask questions, build rapport

Samir Virani, project manager for Rapid Signs in Surrey, says the best way to start sourcing a supplier is to seek sign companies with good reputations and ask a lot of questions. “A good place to start is a company’s website,” he says. An established company will have a “clean and informative website, and there will be plenty of ideas” on what it offers as well as well as some of its past work. Try to create rapport. “One of the keys in our business is to develop a relationship with someone,” says Paul LeBlanc, owner, Fastsigns of Vancouver. “Rather than making a decision about who you are buying a specific sign from, what you are doing is making a decision about who you want to develop a long-term relationship with in terms of your graphic needs.” Instead of focusing on whether you need a vehicle wrap, a neon sign or the most eye-catching trade booth 18

ADPAGES/2012

Ad Pages 2012.indd 18

Remember permitting

“One of the questions a business could be asking is if the [sign company] knows what else is involved in the whole process,” says Hui. “It takes a couple more questions just to begin to really understand the expertise a person has.” One major but often overlooked component is permitting, which is required for many retail signs and can take several weeks. If you’re leasing your retail location, consult your landlord or strata to make sure your sign plans fits the building standards. Ask whether the supplier will handle the permitting for you, how long it will take and what the added cost will be. Check them out in person

Once you have your shortlist, tour the facilities to see how the candidates work. “Go visit,” says Slobinsky. “You need to get a feel for what you’re going to buy. You don’t know the materials you’re going to buy; go see. Go see the signage. Go see that beautiful plastic they’re talking about.” Ą

This ad immediately engages attention by appearing censored. The product is targeted to the security industry, and no one is supposed to know how you use it; to share the information would breach security

Power up your print Print advertising continues to show enduring value in today’s diversified cross-media landscape, particularly when integrated effectively with other media channels. By Anne Farrer recent study by e-commerce software developer Art Technology Group (ATG), now owned by Oracle, states that nearly 80 per cent of consumers are using two or more channels to research and purchase products. “Because consumers are coming to merchants through multiple channels,

A

it’s necessary to link those experiences and create a continuous conversation to avoid gaps where the sale could be lost. Merchants don’t have to serve up the identical experience in each channel, but rather optimize and connect channel interactions to deliver consistent brand experiences.” (ATG Research Report)

media channels. He or she will create an integrated plan, recommend channels on the basis of suitability and negotiate discounts and positioning.

Create a strategic foundation

Start with your marketing objectives. Are you looking to promote loyalty? Drive traffic? Generate familiarity? Create awareness? Research shows that magazine, other print and television continue to rate highly for creating initial awareness. What makes you different?

Determine a consumer-driven benefit or insight that separates your offer from those of your competitors. Create a compelling story around it. Use emotion to make your message stick. Keep print in the mix

Many of print’s inherent benefits continue today: high engagement, immersivity, longevity, portability and the pleasure of a tactile experience. Build an integrated plan

Each media channel has a unique role to play. Print advertising is particularly powerful when it comes to launching brands and initiatives and for timesensitive promotions that inspire engagements with brands. Having confirmed that print must remain in your multi-channel mix, take the following steps to ensure success:

2. CHOOSE A CREATIVE PARTNER

Don’t waste your money on mediocre creative. Invest in a relationship with a professional creative-services firm. 3. DESIGN A PERSUASIVE EXPERIENCE

Design your campaign to get an emotional reaction. Spread the message across multiple channels, including print, to create an immersive story. 4. USE COMPELLING IMAGERY

The uniqueness of your imagery will draw readers to your message. People take more time to look at the images in print ads, so make sure yours are of high quality. 5. OPTIMIZE AND CONNECT

Clearly state your URL on your print communications. Ensure that your landing page visually connects with the print experience. Entice prospects to go on line with additional content that only they can access. Use each channel to its best advantage, and your brand message will find its way through the clutter. Ą

Agents of change How your ad people charge, what you’re getting from the relationship and how to measure success

By Lynne DeCew o what’s the going rate for an ad – or a marketing campaign, a logo or a website? And how do you know you’re getting your money’s worth? As with so many things, it depends. Ad agencies and design firms base fees on the amount of staff time and level of expertise required. (Will the job take three weeks of a senior art director’s time or a few hours of a junior’s? What about the copywriters, producers, programmers, media planners?) The agency may also account for the media budget and the project’s longevity. (Will this ad appear once in a golftournament program or five times in the Globe and Mail? Is this logo for a one-off charity event or for a major brand?)

S

Then there are overhead and profit. A big international agency with an espresso bar in the reception area will probably charge you more than a small boutique firm. So while there’s no standard rate sheet, these tips can help you get better value for your money and maintain a good relationship with your agency. 1. FIT IS EVERYTHING

Don’t buy a Ferrari or a Vespa if you really need a Prius. Seek an agency that already works with projects and budgets similar to yours. Don’t be afraid to ask how many of its clients are in your price range. If possible, ask some of those clients if the agency’s rates represent good value.

ADPAGES/2012

21

6/11/12 7:16:49 PM

2. BE UP FRONT ABOUT YOUR BUDGET

5. DON’T WASTE THE AGENCY’S TIME

This is especially important if you can’t specify the deliverables exactly. The cost of an “awareness campaign,” for example, can vary hugely. Tell the agency how much money it has to work with – or at least a range – so it can propose a realistic, suitable solution.

OR YOUR MONEY

There are three main reasons projects go over budget: Ą The agency wasn’t properly briefed in the first place. Ą The brief changed mid-way. Ą The real decision-maker didn’t sign off on the creative brief.

3. BE VERY CLEAR ON WHAT’S INCLUDED

No one likes surprises. Agree in advance on what’s included in the estimate, such as revisions, printing, press checks, travel expenses, photography, ongoing technical support for a website and so on. 4. AN ESTIMATE IS AN ESTIMATE

Rarely can an agency estimate its time with 100 per cent accuracy. A great idea may arrive quickly, but not always. Other times complications arise that the agency couldn’t predict. Be prepared to consider increases of 10 to 15 per cent in the final bill, or more if the project parameters shift (see #5).

Third-party thoughts Commissions vs. mark-ups vs. fees The 15 per cent commission on gross media budgets used to be the financial lifeblood of ad agencies, but those days are largely over. Today, media commissions typically range from two to five per cent, or just enough to cover the media-buying service, which is often provided by a specialized media-buying affiliate rather than by the ad agency. Other agency services (planning, creative, project management, production) are usually billed as fees, either by project or hourly. If the agency is overseeing and purchasing third-party services such as printing or photography on your behalf, expect it to include a markup, usually 15 to 20 per cent.

22

ADPAGES/2012

Ad Pages 2012.indd 22

In any of these cases, it’s back to the drawing board, and usually under an even tighter deadline than before. Your agency may expect to be compensated for the extra time required. At least, it’ll consider itself warned and increase its fees for your next project. 6. EVALUATE THE RELATIONSHIP, NOT THE LAST PROJECT

In our highly subjective, deadlinestressed business, things don’t always go smoothly. Rate your agency on its performance over the long term rather than just on one project. Has it made a real, overall effort to understand your business? Has it brought you fresh ideas, good design and engaging copy? Does it correct mistakes quickly, meet deadlines and deliver on promises? 7. DON’T BE A GRINDER

You wouldn’t choose a lawyer or hairdresser on price alone. An agency is made up of professionals with years of training and experience. Treat them like partners, not vendors. Compensate them as you’d want to be: fairly and promptly. If you do, they’ll bend over backwards to help you succeed. reasons for strong graphic design decades, helping you build long-term brand equity: no easy feat when you’re faced with ever-shrinking customer attention spans.

By Ian Grais hink you don’t need it? Think again.

T

1. YOUR COMPETITORS USE IT

Design has migrated from an afterthought to an integral force in business today. With so many products and services becoming commoditized, design is more important than ever in giving your company a communicative and creative edge. Having highquality graphic design gives you table stakes now. Not using it is like not using accounting.

3. STRATEGY MATTERS

Expressing your company’s reason for being requires more than looking at a few logo or brochure options. Graphic design can help you stand out from your competitors every time by making your story visually powerful and strategically flexible. With a clear communication strategy, you’ll know what you need to say, why you’re saying it, to whom and through which channels.

2. YOUR IDENTITY COUNTS

Establishing the right identity is the allimportant first step. Your identity is what all your marketing points to, so it needs to be a clear, original and functional distillation of your company’s position and purpose. Successful execution ensures that your logo will last for years, even

4. CLARITY AND SIMPLICITY ALWAYS WIN

As Mark Twain said, “If I‘d had more time I‘d have made it shorter.” It‘s a lot harder to be clear and simple than to overload people with information. The job of graphic design is to bring order and control to a cluttered, confusing world.

communication that’s actually been strategically planned, rigorously crafted and carefully executed. One will last a week; the other will build a brand. 8. IT COSTS LESS THAN IT’S WORTH

5. AN INFOGRAPHIC IS WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS

When we‘re all drowning in written information, a well-designed and visually interesting fact or illustration makes the point faster with more impact. How much complex information does your company need to communicate? Say it with pictures. 6. PACKAGE WITH PURPOSE

Design isn’t about prettiness; rather, it’s one of your strongest tools for persuading potential customers. Knowing this, large companies often employ psychologists, semioticians and archetype experts to help design the right packages and messages. Even if you can’t afford to go to such lengths, know that some of your competitors do and take your own packaging seriously. 7. DESKTOP PUBLISHING DOESN’T CUT IT

Just because you have 200 fonts on your computer doesn’t mean you’re a designer. There’s a huge difference between work that copies the appearance of graphic design and 24

ADPAGES/2012

Ad Pages 2012.indd 24

Design is extra-important for small companies because it’s the easiest, cheapest way of looking as big, as well-established or as high-quality as their competitors. Yet beware of the really cheap services that generate quick designs. Like cheap suits bought over the Internet, these will never fit well. You really need a smart, organized wardrobe, not a one-off. 9. GOOD DESIGN LASTS

Design that’s driven by strategy and strong original ideas, that’s clear and objectively understood by its intended audience and that doesn’t rely upon visual trends or clichés and that solves communication problems will provide benefits for years. Investing in the right talent, processes and experience from the start can save your business plenty in the long run. 10. DESIGN ADDS VALUE

It inspires, explains, educates and informs. It provides clarity, personality, character and quality. It encourages conversations, builds narratives and changes perceptions. It can be a powerful, positive force for change. Ą Ian Grais is founder and creative director of Rethink, with offices in Vancouver and Toronto.

Mailing services

Here are 3 steps to successful direct mail Direct mail puts profits in your pocket. It’s the secret weapon that puts you in front of your customer and ahead of your competitor. Knowing how to use it is the key to your success. It’s not really a black art and the formula is fairly simple. Direct mail, done properly, can be both easy and profitable. It’s pretty basic . . . make the right offer to the right people at the right time. Step 1 - Choose the right list. If you’ve been in business any length of time you’ll already have a customer list. These are the people you want to talk to first. It’s likely that 80% of your business comes from 20% of your customers. You know who they are, what they buy and what they are willing to pay. Talk to them. Of course every business likes to see new customers. There are plenty of sources for new names out there. Find one that matches the profile of your best customers and then test a similar offer to those people. Step 2 - Make the right offer. When you know your customers, it’s easy to make them the right offer. They’ve bought from you before. Future purchases are going to resemble what your customers purchased in the past. Take a look at that history and then determine which offer is going to best suit each person.

Direct mail is three times more likely to be opened than promotional email.* When marketers combine direct mail with even one additional medium such as email, purchase intent increases by as much as 300%.* *Source - P Loves E study, CP 09-205 October 2009

The most basic way to segment a list is current customers and lapsed customers. It’s simple (2 groups) and effective. It’s easy for you to deliver the message that gets the right response. If you want to get a bit fancier, you can segment on the basis of Recency, when was the last time they bought, Frequency, how often they bought, Monetary Value, what did the spend with you. It’s called RFM segmentation. It’s a good way to break your customers into manageable groups so you can deliver a relevant message. If you need some help with it, Honeycomb Direct Mail is there for you. Step 3 - Get noticed . . . for the right reasons. If you get mail, you know there are two piles. As you sort your mail you stand over the recycle bin. Some you keep, some you don’t. You know the routine. Honeycomb executes direct mail campaigns that get you into the right pile. We see many campaigns each year and we know how to deliver Targeted … Measurable … Results.

To start planning your next Direct Mail campaign, go to www.honeycombdirect.com or contact Bojan at 604-253-6006 or bsavric@honeycombdirect.com for a FREE consultation.
