Message from the headmaster Life is full of memories and experiences. Yearbooks document but a fraction of actually what goes on in schools and this past year has also involved some online lessons, which have not been as easy to capture. Pandemic or not, education and school have continued for BISP students. Teachers have inspired learning in more ways this year than they ever have before, and students have adapted to many different styles and formats of lessons. Without a doubt, our community of students, teachers and parents have become more resilient and adapted quickly to the changing horizon. Wellbeing has been pushed to the extremes and nurturing new habits and routines have not been easy at times. Having a supportive community and positive outlook was the only way to advance and stay connected. While at school, passions flourished and it showed, but at home, it was often a case of finding new or different pathways to stay on track. Educators often tell their students: “Always do your best”. Our examination classes have found out first hand that this saying can actually be true; you never know what the immediate future may bring.

Simon Meredith Headmaster

This Yearbook is perhaps more special than others because it documents a time in history that the world has not experienced before. I hope you have all learnt from the challenges and experiences you have encountered this year. Thank you to everyone for your support, care and understanding. To the editorial and marketing team, thank you for your efforts in documenting this year in so many different formats, as well as this Yearbook.

Messages from the Administration Congratulations to all our BISP graduates. This Yearbook marks the end of High School for you, but also the beginning of a new journey. I hope you have all gained precious knowledge, skills and friendships from this home, BISP. As we all know, for more than a year now, we have been confronting an unprecedented situation and it has been a hard time for us all. The school has tried its best to provide online lessons during the school closure. We realise the importance of continuing to improve our online learning provision to meet the students’ needs and our educational standards. I do appreciate and thank all of you – students, parents, teachers and staff – who have shown unwavering commitment throughout the year.

Asst.Prof.Dr.Nares Pantaratorn Managing director

Despite these difficult times, let us assure you that we will not reduce our quality and will continue to develop and maintain our facilities and services to support student learning. We plan to continue the upgrade of school facilities such as the Music Room, swimming pools, and IT networks. Moreover, we are now setting up the Data Protection system to follow Thailand’s Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA). This system is to safeguard data owners from the illegal collection, use, or sharing of personal information. Therefore, please be assured of our commitment to providing the best and safest environment for your child to learn and grow. Lastly, I wish everyone all the best and thank you for being a part of the BISP community.

Producing a Yearbook is a time to reflect on all the highlights and memorable events of the year. A Yearbook reminds us of good times with friends; the new people we have met; our diverse cultures at British International School, Phuket; sports; performing arts and cultural events; a year of learning and striving to be better in all that we do. Our school year was challenged by COVID-19, but I am extremely proud of how each of us responded to the pandemic and what our school and our community achieved. Well done to all of you for coming through the year so well in the face of so much uncertainty. During the 2020-2021 academic year, we learned what it is like to be locked down, locked out, bubbled, hand sanitised, isolated, socially distanced, masked, traced, and tested. But amidst the chaos and confusion, we found ways to unite and work together. With technology and creativity, we were able to maintain our sense of community. Students found ways to connect, have fun and be supportive while continuing to access education. What is clear is how we respond to life’s challenges makes us stronger and builds our confidence. Despite everything, 2020-2021 has been a successful year. To those who have directly or indirectly enriched the lives of our students this year – the teaching and support staff, the sports coaches and other community volunteers, parents and caregivers – I extend my sincere thanks and best wishes.

Suwinai Viponchai School Director

I look forward to seeing you back in August refreshed and ready to pursue new opportunities and tackle different challenges. And I would like to pay special tribute to those who are leaving the school and wish you good luck in your journey. No matter what, please keep in mind that all of you were part of some wonderful memories here at BISP. Thank you for your contribution. I would also like to take this opportunity to offer my heartiest congratulations to the Year 13 cohort on their graduation, and I wish you all the best going forward. I know that you have been shaped and fortified by the defining moments wrought by the COVID-19 pandemic. You will grow further to become better, kinder and more compassionate people at work and in life. I believe you will go on to make us very proud one day. We are indeed blessed and thankful that we have reached the last day of the school year in 2020-2021 with everyone safe. Have a relaxing and enjoyable holiday, and I look forward to welcoming our students and staff back for the 2021-2022 academic year.

Message from Primary

Kenneth Page

Principal, Primary School We are living through extraordinary times. Eighteen months ago, online learning was little more than imaginative thinking, and the notion that we should be so restrictive of access to the campus had not crossed our minds. Major events, which normally provide a reassuring rhythm to our school year, have suddenly been jeopardised and that rhythm has been broken. And yet… In this school year, we have been obliged to offer two periods of whole-school online learning at short notice. Without missing a beat, our community has slipped into these periods smoothly and efficiently, and come out of them in the same graceful manner. We have dealt with the many and regularly changing protocols and restrictions with good humour, humanity and gentle effectiveness. Or, as we like to say in the Primary School, with respect and kindness. Recognising the potential for future restrictions and seizing the moment when it occurred, we have been able to rearrange major events so that children in the Primary School were still able to take part in the Cross Country, Sports Days, the Year 4-6 production of Peter Pan, a number of day trips and all the residential trips. We still celebrated Wai Kru, Christmas (including Santa’s Grotto), Chinese New Year, Loy Krathong and Songkran. Children’s learning has continued apace, both in class and online, and children have made pleasing progress. As we approach the end of the school year, it is perhaps permissible for us to take a degree of pride in a job well done despite the circumstances. By ‘we’, I certainly mean the whole school community. Children can feel proud of how they dealt with the changes to online and in-school learning, and have adapted to new protocols, including mask-wearing and social distancing. Parents have been overwhelmingly supportive, working with us both to meet our obligations and to provide the best for the children. School staff (teachers, TAs, admin, etc) have gone above and beyond to provide reassurance and stability in what might otherwise be unsettling and turbulent times. Thank you, everyone. It really has been an extraordinary year!

Message from Secondary

Neil Crossland

Principal, Secondary School When I first visited British International School, Phuket some time ago, I marvelled at the lush green campus, resplendent buildings and the way the school features iconically on the local landscape. I now know that the buildings and premises are just one of many strengths at this school, and it is actually the warmth, integrity and resilience of the people who come here each day that truly defines our place within the community. The 2020-21 academic year has seen a world adjusting to change and circumstance. At times we have had to recalibrate the way we teach and learn in order to provide a safe, developmental and sometimes ‘virtual’ experience, to enable students to make sustained educational progress, without detriment to personal wellbeing. Students have shown great tenacity in the way they have responded to the challenge. Our academic results have reached alltime highs; in Sport, our students continue to attain national and international honours; and in the Arts, our young performers continue to take centre-stage at the highest level. Our students talk fondly of their school as a ‘home for learning’ and continue to flourish as they adjust and embrace change. Our graduating class of 2021 represent 25 different nationalities and are pursuing University placement and scholarship in a similar number of countries around the world. Their journey at BISP has brought success, enriched by a wealth of events, experiences and performances that will last in memories indefinitely. Above all our graduating class will take with them the friendship and camaraderie typical of living and working within a community such as ours. We thank all students who are leaving BISP this year for their invaluable contribution over the years and wish them every success in their future endeavours. We hope you enjoy reading this Yearbook as a wonderful pictorial representation of your experience in 2020-21. On behalf of the teachers and staff at BISP, I congratulate and thank all students for their dedication and commitment over the year - you really do make this school a very special place to learn.

British International School, Phuket is pleased to offer a range of activities for students over the Summer break. All academic camps are available to current BISP students only. Sports camps are open to students nationwide. Sessions will be delivered in line with the most up to date recommendations from the Phuket Health Authorities and the CCSA (Thailand’s Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration). Bookings can be made by emailing bde@bisphuket.ac.th.

Messages from the Head Students It has been eight years since I first stepped foot on the BISP campus, unable to hold more than a basic conversation in English. And I can now say with confidence that these have been the best years of my life. I have seen the school change and develop, but one aspect remained constant: the warmth and care of the BISP community. The following collection of photographs goes to show the harmony demonstrated by students and teachers at BISP on a daily basis. Through the collective work of student Wellbeing Teams, Color Team Captains and Coordinators, the Student and Senior Leadership Teams, teachers, and staff members, we have been able to strive academically, physically, emotionally, and creatively. To me, the best part of being a Head Student was being able to witness the potential of students at BISP, helping them push their boundaries to become the best version of themselves. Through this experience of serving the BISP community, I have grown immensely, too. This was an honour and memory I will forever cherish. We have organised various tournaments, competitions, and opportunities for students to express their voice, but our ultimate achievement was bringing together people of different ages and backgrounds to work for something bigger. This is a legacy that we want to pass on to future Student Leaders.

Polina Cherdantseva Head student

Thank you to all students, teachers, and staff members for shaping me throughout this journey – you will forever have a special place in my heart. Best of luck to everyone in their future endeavours!

Leaving BISP is going to be like leaving a home. Over the last 16 years, I have found family, comfort and support in the school community. Starting this incredible journey in Little Ducks, BISP has helped me overcome the ups and downs of school life. It is safe to say that BISP has molded me into the person I am today. The amazing connections and bonds I have formed with my classmates and teachers throughout these years are invaluable and I am sure will last a lifetime. I am grateful to have found such compassionate, loyal and caring peers who helped me get through the rigorous journey of High School. I would say the opportunities at BISP are endless so take as many as you possibly can. This school has provided me with the opportunity to become the most well-rounded person I could be. I was also able to attain my lifelong dream of becoming a Head of the student body – both as class president in Year 6, and as a Head Student in Year 13. Being a head student opened my eyes to a new world of responsibility and lived up to my dream of taking the lead in such a prestigious school. My favourite part of it all was being able to work with such an amazing group of people. The student leadership team helped me with their ideas and enthusiasm to create a better ‘tomorrow’.

Isabella Hosking Head student

I feel both honoured and fortunate enough to be a representative of the student body. Being their voice and taking initiative, I hope to have left a small legacy behind. I’d like to thank you all for being part of my incredible journey – I couldn’t have completed it without the endless support I received.

Some Year 11 students took part in the global TEDEd Student Talks competition. They created engaging videos on topics they were passionate about & that linked to the wider world around them. These were featured on YouTube. Below are some of the competitions students across Secondary have had the chance to compete in. Well done to everyone who challenged themselves and stepped out of their comfort zone!

They’ve got a little way to go before they’re in Secondary, but our Reception students enjoyed an out-of-this-world visit from the Secondary Science Faculty as they learnt about rockets

Additional Educational Needs Department

The Additional Educational Needs (AEN) department works with students, teachers, parents and the wider school community in a variety of ways, as the photos show. Our approach ensures that students receive differentiated, scaffolded and individualised instruction to address their unique learning and developmental needs and are full and valued members of our community.

‘Tail Waggin Tutors’ The Certified Therapy Dogs job is to help create a learning environment for children to help improve and develop their reading skills. Developing Communication and Language Development Staff enjoyed some very informative PD this year. They are now embedding this knowledge into targeted interventions. Good Morning Movement Exercise before school improves attentiveness and cognitive functioning in class. Every, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 7.30 - 7.50 the AEN team and CAS students organize activities, circuits and games.

In our afterschool activity (which took place in Term 1) we learnt about which foods are healthy for us and which foods we would be wise to eat less of or even exclude from our diet. We also had regular sessions in the BISP school kitchen, preparing and cooking food; in particular, dishes which are high in nutrients and contribute to a healthy diet. We also looked at how eliminating or reducing our consumption of meat and dairy can contribute to a healthier planet. Some of the things we cooked were; hummus, chickpea curry, green lentils with sweet potato, carrot & coconut cream, pasta arrabiata, red lentil dal, ginger cake, falafel, date & oatmeal cereal bars, TVP burgers, chia pudding, pumpkin soup, and corn fritters. Here are some pictures of our work in the school kitchen:

Here are some of the facts and figures we looked at during our activity.

On Saturday 13th March 2021, two teams of budding chefs from BISP traveed down the bypass to take part in the 5th annual culinary competition at QSI. They were accompanied by Mr Crossland and Mr Greene. BISP entered 2 teams in the competition:

Team Salmon

Team Taco

Both teams worked hard planning their menus in the weeks leading up to the competition and on the actual day, when they displayed great teamwork and communications skis when executing their dishes. Team Taco finished in a commendable 4th place, missing out on the prizes by a slender margin.

165

The competition was judged by three leading chefs currently working in Phuket: Mr. Davide Spighi, Executive chef at Katathani Phuket Beach Resort Mr Pablo Blaman from DEDOS restaurant and Mr Adam Goodman from “Kids Meals Phuket”. Here are some pictures from the competition day:

Life in Boarding this Year Life in boarding has certainly been different in 2020/21, with COVID affecting just about every boarder’s home nation including Thailand. Therefore, Boarding has been open and available 24/7, though every holiday as well as term time. As always, our wonderful students don’t complain; rather they adopt a “can-do” attitude to an academic year when they might not get home to see family at all.

Despite all this, there have been some wonderful moments this year. I think boarders will agree that the December Break surf trip in Khao Lak as well as Christmas Dinner at Cape Sienna in Kamala were particular highlights! My biggest challenge for Term 3 is to try and get as many boarders home safely for the summer for a well-earned family reunion!!
