Message from the Headmaster Change – it is a cliché to say that it is the one constant in our lives, but this year more than any other that I have spent in education, we have had to face the challenge of our world being thrown into confusion. This yearbook will reflect a year in our lives that will never return. Wherever we go, whatever we do, this past school year is now defined, fixed. Each of us, however, will build our lives upon the experiences we have had at BISP. Our memories will, over time, distort slightly but through these pages we will be able to revisit this school year, perhaps with the advantage of hindsight and, hopefully, with slightly more wisdom. The yearbook will contain countless moments and memories waiting to be rediscovered, and it will ensure that members of our wider community can be recalled one day as we show our children and grandchildren what education was all about in this particular academic year. This is your history – treasure it.

Neil Richards Headmaster

It is my final yearbook in a long career in education – I doubt that my bookcase could carry any more, and I am almost certain that the format that I have grown used to, throughout my time as a teacher, will change in the future. The world has moved on. There is one other constant, however, that I believe will help us deal with whatever the frantic world throws at us – that constant is the commitment to treat others as you would wish to be treated yourself. If you can make this a constant throughout your life, then you will remain a better person for it, and our world will be a safer and a more welcoming place for you. My thanks go to the yearbook contributors and editors, who have worked so hard on our behalf. Finally, and very personally, I wish to thank everyone at BISP for contributing towards my final year in education. I feel very privileged to have worked with so many wonderful colleagues and students. I will surely miss you all.

Messages from the Administration On this occasion, I would like to say congratulations to all students graduating this year. I hope this success will be the beginning of many more to come. Your accomplishments today will be a great start for your future path in life. We believe that every student is valued and worthy of our best effort every day. The school is focused on the academic, emotional, and social needs of all students. The purpose of our education is to prepare students to be lifelong learners and to reach their academic potential. Throughout the year, the school has further improved the high quality of curriculum, staff, and facilities to ensure the students’ excellence in all areas, including. knowledge, skill, attitude, health and mental wellbeing. I would like to thank the Parent Council for your contribution to bring the school community together and the cohesion for the school’s efficiency, and thank all teachers, staff, students and parents for your hard work and dedication to BISP through the years.

Asst.Prof.Dr. Nares Pantaratorn

Lastly, I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to Mr. Neil Richards who has tremendously contributed to school during his nine years as Headmaster. I would like to take this memorable opportunity to wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors.

Managing director

Recently I read a short statement somewhere that said: “A stranger is a friend that you haven’t yet met.” However, in today’s world, we all meet strangers in everyday life, whether they are a friend or not, because everyone is defending themselves from the global pandemic COVID - 19 by wearing face masks. This creates the uneasy sense that we are all strangers. At BISP, as well, the COVID-19 (coronavirus) situation has made for an anxious time for many members of our community, especially those who have pre-existing health conditions, family members in high-risk groups, or friends and family in other affected countries. From the first day of the government’s announcement regarding the preparation of the COVID 19 outbreak, we were faced with situations that we had never met before, and new ways of living and labelling have become familiar such as: Disease Infected Zones / High-risk countries, Self - Quarantine / Self - isolate / Self - Declaration, Cancel of final exam for Year 11 and Year 13, Online learning /Work from home/Social distancing, Closure of places / Lockdown province Etc.

Suwinai Viponchai School Director

The way the BISP community has risen to this unprecedented change demonstrates the strength of our management, leadership, teachers, students and staff. We worked together to protect our community, ensuring that we were safe. We approach this situation with determination, sacrifice and patience. In closing, one of our main focus points for our teachers, students and staff during the 2019-2020 school year has been having a “growth mindset.” A growth mindset unlocks our ability to learn and grow especially during challenging times. Little did we know how important this growth mindset would be for all of us this year! Because of this experience and our growth mindset, I believe we all will be stronger when we come out on the other side of the COVID-19 pandemic! History is being written! We hold the pen! Together, we will write the BEST story for our BISP!

Message from Primary Well, this has been quite a school year. The first term was, as is so often the case at BISP, a delight. The sun shone, children were happy and learning. Events such as the Wai Kru, cross country, the Soccer 7s, Loy Krathong and the Christmas Production were great successes and well supported by the whole school community. Term 2 started well enough, with Year 5 enjoying their camp to Khao Sok. But then the shadow of COVID-19 fell over us. We carried on, despite many events being suspended. Then, in mid March, the school was closed as the country moved into lockdown and we began our home-based learning program. I am typing this two months after the closure, sitting at home and wondering if we will be able to get back to school at all this term. So much has changed as we find ourselves in this unprecedented situation. Yet some things have not changed. The sun is still shining, children are still happy and they continue to learn. The positive attitude and independent skills on display and being developed by this situation have been a credit to the children and will stand them in good stead for the future.

Ken Page

Principal, Primary School

It is customary in a piece like this to thank the staff. How necessary that is now! Unseen by many, our Thai admin staff have been working to maintain the school integrity so that, when this temporary closure has passed, we can continue to provide our customary high quality experience for our students. Our teachers have surpassed themselves. Remember, they are susceptible to the common fears and anxieties at this time whilst also working from home, very often also supporting their own children through home-based learning as they support and guide the children in their own classes. That they do so with such cheerful dedication has been quite outstanding. I would also like to thank all those parents who have stood by us during this time. It may not have been easy at times, but your support is greatly appreciated and has enabled us as a school not only to maintain the trajectory of the children’s learning but also to stand ready to reopen as soon as is deemed prudent. That will be a delight.

Message from Secondary This school year is one which will be unique to everyone and which goes down in history as something which you will be able to talk about for many many years. We should remember that it is not just BISP which was affected by the Covid-19 pandemic but in fact the whole world. Here in Phuket we were actually very safe and well cared for. Many in the world did not have such good fortune or support. In the Secondary School I am very proud in the way that students managed online learning and the professionalism of teachers to make your educational journey smooth and meaningful. Your parents also had a great role to play but fortunately students took the bulk of any responsibilities. Change is never easy and even more difficult when it is introduced suddenly and includes the environment in which you live. The resilience of students and teachers at BISP has been shown to be very high. The journey was not easy and there were hurdles and potholes but the race was finished and satisfying!

Simon Meredith

Principal, Secondary School

Our Year 11 and 13 examination classes had the privilege and experience of sitting for examinations taken away from them. Some students were delighted, others devasted and some still cannot believe the situation. One lesson for everyone to learn – always do your best at school (in fact anything that you undertake in life) because you do not know what the future will bring. A background of success and good results can never hurt! So this yearbook is a pictorial representation of our successes this year as well as a visual memory of classes, teams, trips and activities up until March. The year 2019-2020 has been very successful on every front – academically, artistically, culturally and athletically. Our academic results at IGCSE and IBDP continue to be above the world average and our IGCSE students again received Top In Thailand awards. We thank all leavers for your many and varied contributions to the school community and look forward to hearing of your successes and life long ventures. Stay in touch and you are always welcome back to share your experiences and wisdom. Finally, a word of thanks to you all, the students, parents and staff of BISP. Your enthusiasm, respect, hard work and dedication to BISP are what makes our school so unique and special.

Messages from the Head Students Stepping into hallways that many of us call home, 21 months ago, I never anticipated the warmth with which the community would envelop me. Though my journey here has been brief, it feels as if I’ve grown up and lived my whole life here. That is a testament to what makes BISP so remarkable — its heart. In every student, teacher, and Thai staff member, you will find a level of compassion unrivalled by any other educational community out there. It is rare to find a group of such incredibly diverse and talented people who are so tightly bonded — but that’s BISP for you. BISP bristles with life and tremendous talent. In everything from musical productions and Soccer 7s, to global academic achievement and TEDTalks, we have proven time and time our prowess as a student body. It is part of what makes working with the Student Leadership Team so personally enriching.

Nigel Chan

This year has shown how strong of a community we are. In face of the global pandemic, our students and teachers have demonstrated resilience, teamwork, and a true sense of humanity, and everyday we witness simple acts of kindness and bravery, by teachers and students alike, which makes me incredibly proud to count myself as a student of this school.

Head Boy

Our final lesson in BISP came rather unexpectedly, amidst the hugs that we shared on what would be the final day of school. It was that memories can never be fully cherished - this year, I feel that this is particularly apt. Every day we walk along the same hallways, listen to the same teachers, and await the same bells. In between these schedules, it’s easy to forget what BISP stands for, and the values we embody as its students. As the intersection of a student in the final year and the representative of the student body in the backdrop of the last few months, I have realised that these values do not lie in the school itself. Instead, it is in BISP’s recognition that everyone’s idea of success looks different and the empathy with which we approach one another. In moments such as today’s we can truly appreciate these values ingrained in the interactions, support, and commitment between the students, parents and teachers. This yearbook celebrates BISP’s 2019/2020, and more importantly, you, as a part of the student body. You are what makes this school what it is, and I hope you continue to do so in the future.

KS3 Trips 25th-29th November 2019 Year 7 - Krabi Year 8 - Khao Sok Year 9 - Kanchanaburi

My favourite activity was going snorkelling and jumping off the diving board. I also enjoyed the Geography field trip where we went to visit the waterfalls. I learnt a lot such as how to measure the speed, depth and distance of a waterfall. Chiara Egger, Year 7

I learnt a lot about working as a team. In most of the activities we had to work in a group and we wanted to help each other so we could win the challenge! Puwarissa Ngiampaisal, Year 9

My favourite activity was kayaking. It wasn't as exhausting as it might sound, however we did spend a lot of time with our friends and had so much fun. On the trip, I also learned a lot about the Prisoners of War and the Thai-Burma Railway. That topic really got me thinking, and I still think about it. It was really interesting to learn so much in such a small period of time. Zhanna Kapranova, Year 9

From the trip, I learnt that being in small raft houses in the middle of a dam can be really fun as we get to be there with our close friends and it's very cosy. Before I went on the trip, I didn't think it was going to be fun as it was. I really enjoyed where we stayed for our camp. Tanyatorn Tiewlamsam, Year 8 My favourite part about camp was the mountain bike riding activity. I liked that we got to ride bikes together. Nathan Lowry, Year 9

I really loved the fashion show because it was very enjoyable and it was extremely funny. But over the week, I learnt that I don't always have to be with my friends. It is sometimes easier and also really good to work with people that you don’t usually spend a lot of time with. Thomas Clowes, Year 9

University Advising Congratulations Class of 2020! Our outgoing class of 2020 has made BISP proud with university acceptances and offers of academic and athletic scholarships from respected universities all over the world. It has been exciting for the team to guide students and watch the offers rolling in. Class of 2020, we will miss you dearly but, you will always be part of our BISP family-please keep in touch!

2019 University Fair A highlight of the year was in September when we hosted our fourth annual University Fair. This was a busy and vibrant event with representatives from 98 universities. 20 countries were represented from 5 continents. There were workshops, presentations and one to one conversations, bringing together students from Year 10 upwards and parents too and not just from BISP. The fair was open to all students on the island. BISP students were impressively resourceful and independent at the event; seeking out people to talk to and developing their inquiry skills. “Really lovely students with lots of questions - some of the most down to earth and genuine students I spoke to during the whole 3 weeks (of recruiting)!” -Hotel School of the Hague

University Counselling is always busy due to the diverse backgrounds and pathways of BISP students. 2019-2020 included the challenging global event of COVID-19. Students remained calm as universities around the world adjusted to closures, quarantines and the cancellation of IB Þnal exams!

SCIENCE Dear BISP, I am left with very fond memories of my final 7 teaching years here at BISP with friendly fellow teachers, polite students and a beautiful campus. I will leave you with something to think about for your future: “The world has enough for everyone’s needs but not enough for everyone’s greeds” – Mahatma Gandhi I wish you all good fortune as you tread “los caminos de la vida” Science faculty members bid a fond farewell to a school legend, Mr Seve. Enjoy your retirement and keep in touch

Mr Seve

The care and effort put into their work by many students has been amazing

Students across Y10, 11, 12, & 13 enjoyed many successes in International Science Competitions. Well done everyone!

The only real subject whilst others pretend (well okay apart from music, art, PE and drama, but we make things!).

Mimmie’s very creative chair and Youn’s strange thing, but he had the best project in the year!

Kim and Alex shelf makers extraordinaire.

Por Pan looking very proud, with reason! How does Felix’s desk stay upright? Year 11 have been quite an exceptional band of brothers and sisters this year producing exceptional projects, but unfortunately we haven’t got space to show them all off. Armaan’s plan for Olympic success, maybe. Ruthiik’s desk (modelled by Milan) the biggest project ever! And best sprayed goes to Vadim. Who did that face?

Bank’s rising and falling kitchen space saver. He has also passed the audition for a pub landlord.

If you see Guy on the road in this just run. And when Ian is playing for Newcastle it will be in no small way to his unique passing device. Now our IB students have been hard at it as well, so here is a snippet from here on.

Kaylee keeping motorcyclists safe on the roads and in Chernobyl.

Ping Ping’s super auto page turner

Christina’s hydroponics,

To all our students thank-you for another wonderful year, and it is goodbye from Mr. Perry heading for retirement, but Craigen remains as ever, but only one kilt next year.

Bored in Boarding? Surely not!! OK, so let’s be honest …. It is not all coconuts in the pool, rock climbing, visiting beach resorts and water parks (although, it can be at the weekends)! Boarding is about structure, routine, 24/7 supervision, great friendships, support and a listening ear and fun activities during free time. It’s about ensuring your child gets the best out of all opportunities available at BISP! Come see for yourself! Come and stay or contact cdonovan@bisphuket.ac.th for more information.
