President’s Message Kristin Oban, 2015 President I started my real estate career in 2002 and throughout the years have served on several board committees as a member, vice chair, and chair. I ran for Vice President in 2012. I had no big plans or expectations- I was just simply asked to do so. I had absolutely no idea that I was about to embark on such an amazing and impactful journey - one that has positively impacted me both professionally and personally in so many ways. The opportunities and experiences that this position has afforded me are irreplaceable.

I have had the opportunity to represent our board at local and state meetings and conventions. I have done the same at national meetings in San Francisco, New Orleans, Washington D.C. and Chicago. Through all of these experiences- the places I have been, the people I have met, the conversations I have been a part of- it is clear to me that we have the best association right here in Bismarck-Mandan.

The primary focus this year was the Core Standards. This was put into motion by NAR who basically said that "if you want to be a member of the National Association of REALTORS®, then you must meet these minimum standards." It's about raising the bar for our profession. The members of our Bismarck-Mandan Association stepped up and proved that we have what it takes to be the best examples of professionals in our community. There were a few areas that needed to be addressed, but we were doing most of the requirements already. And, not only were we doing them; we were, and are, doing them incredibly well. That is proof of a well-run organization.

Beyond working to ensure that the Core Standards were met, we had an impressive amount of volunteers accomplishing projects throughout the year.

The "Cloud Crowd" technology group was developed to provide information and demonstrations for numerous tech tools, including the REALTOR® Action Center. The Education Committee organized top notch education including a CRS course, and a Code of Ethics course with Bruce Aeydt. The Program Committee featured speaker Kostas Voutsas at the well-attended Administrative Professionals Lunch. They also organized informative speakers regarding, among other topics, the FiveSouth Project, BMDA, and oil activity. The Public Relations Committee continued an important ad campaign promoting the value of REALTORS®. The RPAC Committee conducted a successful campaign raising nearly $37,000. The REACT Committee made a huge impact for local kids with the United Way Backpack Program.

Please take time to review the Annual Report to appreciate all of the many things that were accomplished this year.

Thank you to all of the dedicated volunteers who came together and participated this year. Very little could be accomplished without you and the generosity of your time and efforts. Thank you so much to Nancy and Heather- without them effective leadership truly could not be possible.

Thank you to every REALTOR® and Affiliate who supports the Bismarck-Mandan Board of REALTORS®. You do not have to be in leadership to make a difference. It is you going out and doing your job every day to ensure the best quality of service while helping people achieve the American Dream of home ownership. I stated a year ago that I believe in the Bismarck-Mandan Board of

REALTOR® Core Organizational Standards Established by the National Association of REALTORS® As a REALTOR® Association, in order to maintain its charter with the National Association of REALTORS®, we, and 1600 other REALTOR® Associations, had until June 30 of 2015 to meet certain requirements established by NAR. Fortunately for our membership, we have had bright, visionary leaders who have had us on the right path; and therefore, our association had to make very few updates and changes to meet the Core Standards.

Following are the standards in summary format.

Code of Ethics Associations will… monitor members’ completion of Code of Ethics courses. provide enforcement processes for the Code of Ethics and Arbitration requests. provide mediation options when requested.

Advocacy Associations will… include the option to remit RPAC and PAF investments on dues renewal invoices. distribute information on the value of investing in these funds. encourage members to participate in calls for action. use REALTOR® Party Resources.

Consumer Outreach Associations will be engaged in various options of consumer outreach including options like… be the “voice for real estate” with the media and other avenues. promote the value of REALTORS®. engage in legislative/political issues that impact real estate. organize human resources for the benefit of charitable and community organizations.

Unification and Support for the REALTOR® Organization Associations will… retain legal counsel. maintain necessary corporate documents. file legal and tax documents in a timely manner. adopt a strategic plan.

Association Executive shall complete six hours of education in real estate association professional development annually. assure proper dues reporting and collection. assure bylaws and MLS rules and regulations are approved by NAR every two years.

Financial Solvency Associations will… adopt policies to ensure the fiscal integrity of the association’s financial operation. conduct an annual financial review.

Hosted ten interested members at an informational meeting. Guest speakers included Scott Breidenbach, Past NDAR President; Scott Louser, Past NDAR President & current N D Legislator; and President Kristin Oban.

Submitted one name for Vice President, seven names for two Directors positions, one name for Vice President, and one name for NDAR Director at large. Mary Shelkey-Miller was elected Vice President for 2016; Karin Haskell and Terri Benson-Holmstrom were elected to three-year terms on the Board; and Judy Maslowski was elected to the NDAR Director at large seat. They join 2016 President Amy Hullet, and President-elect Tricia Schlosser.

The Administrative Professionals Lunch featured speaker Kostas Voutsas, and assistants were recognized with a gift (yellow “sunshine” items packaged in a jar).

Coordinated with the Education Committee ideas and speakers for Membership Luncheons that included: Presidents Reports, RPAC fundraising; recognition of Administrative Professionals, annual meeting and election, FiveSouth Project, BMDA Update, a presentation from the North Dakota Petroleum Council on oil activity, and a report on jobs availability in the state.

The Affiliate Appreciation Luncheon was a picnic style lunch. Door prizes were donated by agents and real estate offices, and McMahon Brothers provided entertainment.

Planned the 2015 Inaugural Celebration and Awards Ceremony with the theme, “Black & Bling”.

Ran a previously produced ad campaign developed for TV, Radio and online advertising. Ads featured testimonials by buyer and seller clients promoting the value of their REALTOR®.

Staff and leadership participated in two radio talk shows.

Secured volunteers for nearly all shifts at all Bismarck-Mandan Salvation Army kettles for the 2014 REALTOR® Ring Day event sponsored by the North Dakota Association of REALTORS®.

Raised over $7,400 at Bismarck-Mandan kettles in 2014.

Conducted food drive for the United Way Backpack Program at the April luncheon, delivered to United Way, coordinated volunteers to pack bags and delivery to schools. The first challenge between REALTORS® and Affiliates netted a win for the REALTORS® who brought in 17,253 items of food. Added to the Affiliates’ contribution of 8,545 items, a total of 25,798 items were donated.

Twenty nine volunteers participated in the United Way Day of Caring project at Liberty Elementary School.

REALTORS® Give to the Community REALTORS® and Affiliates supported the Salvation Army by ringing the bells at the kettles on REALTOR® Ring Day. One day each year, REALTORS® in 24 states band together to ring the bells at the Salvation Army kettles in their communities. In 2014 the event brought in over $7,400 in BismarckMandan.

United Way Backpack Program Thousands of food items were donated by Affiliate members – from individuals and companies, REALTORS® and real estate offices. The project included a challenge between Affiliates and REALTORS® to collect the most food items, transporting the donations to a storage garage, packing the bags, and delivering the bags to the schools in Mandan and Bismarck. Hundreds of children benefited from this tremendous team effort. Thank you!
