Moving to a new state and finding a house that will suit all of one’s needs is not always an easy task. Finding a home can be even more difficult. That is why when Ryan and Michelle Haught—along with their three boys—moved to Bismarck from Montana in 2014, they chose a house that they knew required remodeling.

“With the house being very traditional looking I was trying to stick with that,” Michelle Haught said. “But, I wanted it to be a little bit more contemporary and have that nice light feeling.”

Doing a lot of the demolition themselves allowed the Haught family to begin remodeling on their own. They eventually hired professionals for much of the installation of fixtures and updates that needed to be done to the wiring and the plumbing of the house.

“It was one thing after another and when we moved here we didn’t know anyone,” Michelle stated. “So, I was doing a lot of the painting myself and then literally opening up the yellow pages to find contractors.”

faucet turned into the centerpiece of the bathroom, an area of the house that Michelle greatly enjoys.

“I like that I feel like it’s unexpected when you come up here,” Michelle stated. “And I love the heated floors.”

The remodel of the master bedroom hardly scratches the surface of what the Haught’s did to fully remodel their home. They renovated the rooms of their three boys (Will, Carter, and Greyson), the living room, office space, kitchen, and added the majority of the design elements and fixtures of the house.

In the living room the Haught’s painted the woodwork above the fireplace, stripped and restained the beams, redid all the trim and doors, scraped the popcorn ceiling, put in new blinds, and freshened up the paint.

The kitchen was one of the areas that the Haught’s feel was altered the most. “One of the biggest changes was that we extended the kitchen.” Michelle said. This was done by bringing the kitchen flooring out farther, broadening the surface area of the space. “I had that scheduled out to the hour for which contractors were coming when, because I don’t like to be displaced,” Michelle said of the kitchen remodel.

The Haught home needed additions other than living space in order for it to function properly for the family. Working from home, Michelle needed an area within the house that gave her the space she needed to concentrate. The Haught’s chose the formal dining room as the perfect area in the house to convert into an office space for Michelle.

“I needed a place to work, but a place that wasn’t tucked away in the basement,” Michelle said.

“This made a legitimate space where I could get stuff done, because when you work from home you are doing a multitude of things.”

After all of the big changes to the house were made the Haught’s felt more content with the space, but it was truly the small

One of these touches is a couch that sits on the front porch of the house.

“We spend every night in the summer out on the front porch before dinner or after dinner and we watch our neighbors walk their cute little dogs,” Michelle said.

Greyson (6) is the youngest of the three Haught boys. His room, littered with LEGO toys and dinosaurs and blue painted walls, is characteristic of his interests. He loves to sit at his desk in his new room and play with his LEGO toys.

Stuffed animals are also a fixture of his room and he calls them his “bubbies.”

Although his mom may have influenced some of the decor and picked out his bed for him, Greyson’s new room is filled with toys and accent pieces that exemplify who he is.

“My favorite part is the dinosaurs,” Greyson said about the remodel of his room. “I love dinosaurs.”

“I like planets,” Carter Haught said when asked what had the biggest impact on the decor of his room.

Carter (8) is the middle child in the Haught family. The walls of Carter’s room are painted yellow to coincide with the celestial theme. The walls are also plastered with maps, and globes rest on shelves nestled between half completed LEGO sets.

His room shows his vested interest in the world and what lies beyond.

Carter enjoys sitting at his desk building LEGO sets and he is currently working on one that contains 1,416 pieces. Even this large LEGO project—a Star Wars set—shows his fascination with the universe.

The oldest of the Haught boys, Will (10), wanted a more sophisticated, modern look in his new room.

Gone is the yellow paint of his younger days, which he says “got babyish.” Instead, his room is filled with sports memorabilia, inspirational quotes, and a gaming computer.

“My favorite part about [my bedroom] is that wall,” Will said, referring to a wall covered in canvas photographs of a football, baseball, basketball, and helmet. This decor is special to Will, because not only does he play each sport, but the photos are of his own equipment.

Even though he has the smallest room, Will loves to sit at his desk playing video games on his computer and making Youtube videos showing other kids how to perform certain sports moves.

ordan and Kari Anderson are the husband and wife duo behind Big River Builders, a Bismarck

company that specializes in new, custom home construction, renovations, and custom woodwork. A major focus for the Andersons is creating a quality product that is unique to what the client wants and needs. In order to do this the couple, along with their fantastic team of employees and subcontractors, work hard to provide the customer with all they desire.

“We wear many hats. We wear all the hats! I come from the building background rather than realty or sales or marketing,” Jordan said. “So, [I know] it is about the work I need to do to make sure I am putting out a quality product; a neat project.”

The Andersons believe that part of why their business is so unique is the involvement of their family within the business. Jordan and Kari have two boys, Trey (5 1/2) and Max (2 1/2), who are as much a part of the business as their parents.

“Our family has an interesting dynamic. Our kids are wild, crazy, fun, and they come with us to the job site,” Kari said.

Family and business come together a lot for the Andersons, whether it be their boys joining them on the job site or their parents lending a helping hand. Having the perfect family/business dynamic is what makes Big River Builders a success; however, over the past couple of years Jordan and Kari have noticed some growing pains within their own home.

“Since we have our kids with us a lot and we work late, we work early, we work weekends, and we work holidays, we need to work from our home” Kari said. “But the way our office is set up right now it is in the middle of our home. My house always has clients in it and that’s not fair to the clients or the kids.”

Out of these growing pains sprung the idea for a project that incorporates what Big River Builders does so well, family and business. Since October 2017 Jordan and Kari have been working on building a house in Whispering Bay in southwest Bismarck that serves as both a family home and a place to grow their business.

“It is almost like a model home too, but the main reason we did it is to have a showroom and conference area,” Jordan said. “This will be a more sectioned off space, more professional, more Big River Builders centered. It will have our cabinets displayed, it will have pictures of a lot of our work, and there will be a proper office [with] a private entrance for the customers to enter.”

Heather Franca worked to turn her near to downtown Bismarck rental home into her own space.

She started by doing what most consider the biggest change achieved for the littlest amount of money, painting all the walls.

She focused on three key words: Neutral, clean, and simple.

The reason Heather fell in love with this 1929 home is due to its charming characteristics. One of those being the vintage trim on both the baseboard and around the windows. The second reason is that the home still boasts its original hardwood floors. The last reason is, unlike other old houses, this home is completely open concept from the front of the home back to the kitchen, a layout practically unheard of almost 90 years ago.

The favorite room in the home is the sun room. Natural light floods through the windows on all sides. The space includes a daybed filled with pillows, perfect for an afternoon nap. It is where Heather keeps her beloved plants. If you find yourself with a small room like Heather’s sun room, it is essential that the room be multi-functional.

This sun room doubles as a place for Heather to roll out her yoga mat and practice a few sun salutations, pun intended.
