The name Third Day Family Farms was chosen by Theresa for the double meaning of Third Day. “In the book of Genesis, all the plants and flowers and things that grow from seed are made on the third day,” explains Nathan. “And of course, the new life that’s presented in the New Testament with the Resurrection and Easter on the third day. That double meaning was important for us to put in the name since we believe what we are doing is something that is a gift from God- the land, the flowers, the whole process of growing, the beauty, the relationships with people, being stewards of what we’ve been given and not making it our project. To us that’s the importance of the name.”

Third Day Family Farms also offers workshops, tours, and bouquet making classes on their farm. On top of farming flowers, Theresa and Nathan both work other jobs. Nathan teaches elementary school, and Theresa works as a nurse. Together, they also raise their two daughters, Abby and Laura, who enjoy helping their parents around the flower farm. The city of Mandan is taking large leaps in becoming a destination town, especially a destination to explore and shop. There have been a handful of unique businesses that have opened up the past few years, especially in the retail sector. New businesses means new customers and with that comes additional revenue for the community:

• Increase in the 1% Local Sales Tax Revenue from year prior. $3.4 million in 2023 — up 8% from 2022

• Increase in the 1% Restaurant & Lodging Revenue — up 14% from 2022.

• Increase in the 2% Hotel Occupancy — up 10% from 2022.

• Taxable valuations more than DOUBLED in past decade, commercial base nearly TRIPLED

A growing community also means more collaboration between the businesses. There has been a strong collaboration between boutique owners who have created and hosted new shopping events throughout the year in Mandan, including Boo-tique Bash, Downtown Mandan Valen “Treats” Walk, Shop Big Mandan Event, and Downtown Mandan “Smokin” Token Sale. These events have brought, and are bringing, new customers into Mandan, especially women and young families.

As Mandan continues to grow in success, Business Development & Communications staff will continue to be champions for all businesses throughout our community.

Mandan Parks and Recreation offers many indoor and outdoor summer activities and programs for all ages!

Mandan has two outdoor golf courses, Prairie West and Mandan Municipal. Prairie West is an 18-hole course that features championship greens with a variety of tee box combinations for players of all skill levels. The community is encouraged to play in one of the two tournaments Prairie West hosts throughout the season and participate in lady’s days, game days, or try out the range. Mandan Municipal is a 9-hole course that’s been a recreational staple in Mandan since 1925. The course is a favorite for beginners, juniors, and seniors who prefer a less formidable challenge. Tee times for both courses are available at golfmandan.com.

Another staple in Mandan is Raging Rivers Waterpark. Raging Rivers opens for the season on May 30th. Hours are weather dependent. The waterpark features a lazy river, tube and speed slides, a kiddie pool play area, bath hours, rental areas, and concessions. Raging Rivers has a variety of special events that occur throughout its season. Some of the favorites include Tod Time, Everyone Swims, and Christmas in July.

There is always something to do in Mandan during the week leading up to the 4th of July. The McQuades Softball Tournament is hosted at Mandan Softball diamonds June 28-30. It’s a great time to visit the softball diamonds whether you’re participating or a fan of softball. The Dale Pahlke Rodeo Arena at Dakota Community Bank & Trust Rodeo Grounds will host the 4th of July Rodeo July 1-4. This action-packed professional rodeo performance is something you do not want to miss!

Summer programs include adult sand volleyball, Adventure in Art, track and field, and baseball. Soon Mandan will feature newly renovated baseball fields. Starting in July, work will begin to install synthetic turf on diamonds 9 and 10, installation of a press box and permanent bleachers on diamond 9, new dugouts on diamonds 9 and 10, two new batting cages, new scoreboard and new fencing. The project will be completed in 2025.

Mandan also features over 30 miles of trails and 18 playgrounds. Two of the playgrounds, Legion and Eagles, have shelters and multipurpose buildings that are available to rent for your next party or gathering!

Where? 1806 & Co

When did you open 1806 & Co? “We officially started in August of 2021. We were a trailer, and I set up mobile places like the NFR and the Badlands Circuit Finals Rodeo. We opened the storefront Memorial Day weekend of 2023.”

How was the switch from trailer to storefront? “Terrifying. When you sign that lease, you’re taking on something. You have a new responsibility to your community to bring new things to the store, to make sure the doors are always open, to make sure you have a space where everyone feels welcome, and everyone feels comfortable.”

What kind of a store is 1806 & Co? “We are what you think of when you hear cowboys and Indians. We have a lot of Native American culture in here. The jewelry is for the most part handmade by Native Americans from this country using turquoise and gemstones from all over the world. You’ll see pieces on the wall that are a showcase of people like the North Dakota Six Pack and some world championship saddleback riders from right here in

the state of North Dakota, so we are working hard to preserve both the Western and cowboy culture as well as that Native American culture.”

Why do you enjoy being a business in Mandan?

“I grew up here, so it’s been nice to come back full circle and have my own little piece of what I always thought Mandan was missing. 5 Nations Arts was a thing when I was growing up, but even then they didn’t know a lot about the artists, so here we’re really trying to dive in deep to get to know the artists and the people who are behind making the jewelry.”

What’s unique about your store’s products? “They’re made to be handed down to the next generation. You don’t come in here and buy a piece that’s going to wear out in a year. It’s going to be something that lasts forever in your jewelry box.”

Who? Shelby Arntson, co-owner

Where? Buffalo Gypsy

When did you open? “We started everything last May, just painting and getting the building ready. Our opening date was August 4th.”

Why did you open Buffalo Gypsy? “My mom and I love the small-town community, and we just wanted to build the downtown of Mandan, start our own business, and have fun with it.”

What’s the inspiration behind the products you sell? “We love going to Deadwood, and we love going to visit my brother in New Mexico, so we wanted to merge both of those together. We thought it would be fun for our community to have some of both worlds here.”

What’s your favorite part of owning a business in Mandan? “It’s been a lot of fun getting to know the local business owners. We’ve been working together and doing events together. I love being on Main Street, the old style feel of Main Street, so that’s been a lot of fun. Getting to know the MPO

and going to those meetings and watching that grow.”

What have you learned since opening your own business? “I’ve learned a lot. It’s all a new language is what I say, learning all of what goes into owning a business, like organization and what to do during tax season. I admire everyone who has done it and been successful with it. But it’s fun.”

Why did you choose the name Buffalo Gypsy? “We were trying to name our store something with meaning behind it. We have a ranch north of Medora, so we always have buffalo out there. We’ve always loved buffalo, and they roam and wander. Growing up, we moved quite often so that’s where we get gypsy in a sense because we moved, and the buffalo like to roam so we came up with Buffalo Gypsy.”

When and why did you open Curvy Flamingo? “I started in the fall of 2016. There really weren’t a lot of boutiques that were selling plus-sized clothing in Bismarck-Mandan at the time. I was sick of the regular store stuff, and I worked in an office where there were four or five of us that were wearing the same clothes all the time. We needed more variety, so I started out of my home and did vendor shows and pop-up shops. That grew, so we found a little shop down here in Mandan in 2018. I was there until a little over a year ago and needed to move into a bigger space, so I moved here May of last year.”

How did you come up with your boutique’s name? “I’ve been obsessed with flamingos my whole life. It’s hard to come up with a business name that’s not already taken. I was trying to think of curvy something, but everything was taken. It was like weeks and weeks and my sister was like just do something with flamingo and I was like oh yeah, that makes sense.”

What do you enjoy about being a business in Mandan? “I’m from Mandan, so I love that. I love that there’s a bunch of other little shops that are opening up now, so that has been really nice to get people to go between the stores. We’ve got a little community of businesses now.”

What do you enjoy about owning your own business? “Definitely the customers. You’ve got people who are here every week or every two weeks looking for different stuff and you get to know their personalities. Then when you’re at market, it’s like, oh, I know she’d love this. Trying to zone in on that personal connection with people and finding stuff you know they’re going to love. That’s my favorite part.”

Why did you open Foxxy Lady? “My husband and I wanted to do another store. We thought it would be fun to do women’s accessories because people enjoy accessorizing, and they can be reasonably priced. We bought it all in January. By the time it all came in, it was mid-summer, and we needed to find a location. July of 2020 is when we opened the store believe it or not.”

What is your store’s specialty? “We offer purses of all kinds, sizes, and styles. We have purses at good price points that are easy to get in to, some fun ones, ones with a country and western look, ones that aren’t country or western, so there’s something for everybody. We also have some very good quality leather pieces, and people who understand leather know that it’s going to last. It’s a piece you can really use and get its use out of.”

What do you love most about owning a boutique? “The people. People are excited for new and different. And that’s what we want. We want our store to be new and different.”

How do you keep your boutique new and different? “When we bring items in, I bring in minimums that I can get, like one of an item, and when it’s gone, it’s gone. I don’t reorder it. I may bring it in again, but in a different color. People want to be different.”

Who is your target customer? “We’re not marketing just to the teenager or a certain age group. We get everybody from teenagers to grandmas and everybody in between. Every style and situation, we get it all.”

When did you open Larkspur Daisy? “I started on just online in November of ’22 after I just had my second. Then, last year in August of ’23, I decided to open a storefront. This was actually a part of my mom’s shop. She’s next door. We put a wall up, so it was the perfect space for me to try it out, and I’ve been doing it since.”

Why did you open Larkspur Daisy? “I have two littles, an almost two-year-old and an almost fouryear-old. I was a stay-at-home mom, and I wanted to do something more. I loved buying cute baby clothes for my kiddos and finding the trendiest little outfits for them, so this was something I could do and still be home with my kids and try to make some extra money. When I found this space, it was an opportunity to make more money, so I decided to go for that.”

What do you enjoy about being a Mandan business? “The community. I met one of my good friends from Rose James. We all get together and plan events. That’s been really important.

Everyone’s been really loving how we get together and put on different events, just getting people out shopping small. I really love that aspect. I feel like you’re never really on your own. You have someone there to help you out or back you up if you need.”

What’s your favorite part of owning a business? “Getting to meet different people. I love getting to know all my customers that come. It’s really fun when you get a repeat customer. It means they liked your stuff enough the first time to come back again, and I really love that.”

Why did you open Rose James & Co? “I’ve been a photographer since 2013, and I started my company Rose James & Co in 2021. It was solely online for nearly two years. After about a year, my best friend and I decided we wanted to open a store together. She was a big inspiration to me. She passed away, and three months later this space became available. After looking for months together it seemed hopeless that we were going to find anything, so this place seemed like something she had sent to me. It’s just a few blocks away from my house, so it really worked out perfectly.”

What kind of products do you sell? “When I started the business, I designed and made all my own graphic tees and cups. As we’ve evolved, I’ve outsourced a lot of my designs now for lack of time. Now that we have a storefront, it’s nice that I can feature other small businesses. I try to purchase in wholesale from local places as well as small businesses throughout the United States, mainly women and indigenous businesses.”

What have you learned since opening your own business? “Taking the business from online to a physical storefront there’s a lot of extra work I didn’t realize. I had no idea merchandising was such a huge field because I have no idea how to display, and I’m just winging it as I go and constantly trying to find new ideas. It’s definitely been a learning curve.”

What do you enjoy about being a business in Mandan? “I love that we’re in Mandan. I love our community. I, along with several other businesses all within two blocks, host a ton of events. It’s just a very fun community and there’s a lot of other women-owned businesses cheering you on.”

Who? Melissa Herz, co-owner

Where does your store name come from? “RuLissa comes from my mom’s name which is Ruth and my name which is Melissa, so we put that together.”

When did you open RuLissa? “We started probably about 12 years ago. We started doing backyard parties where we popped up, did vendor parties and stuff like that. It got to the point where I wanted my spare room back. This location actually opened up like six years ago, and we thought what a great opportunity to bring something into Mandan. There were very few boutiques in Mandan at the time, so here we are.”

What do you enjoy about owning your own boutique? “I just love fashion. I love clothes, so sometimes I have to remember it’s not about me and what I like, it’s about what other people like. The people, too. I like people, and it’s a fun hobby.”

What do you enjoy about being a business in Mandan? “Mandan is very supportive. Mandan is so small town and that’s what really drove me to Mandan.”

What are some challenges of owning your own business? “With the economy the last year, we’ve really had to get creative. We thought Covid was going to be a struggle, and we didn’t skip a beat with Covid. It’s just been about the last year with the way prices have gone up, postage has gone up, shipping has gone up. Just prices all around. We’ve really had to increase our prices, and people just don’t have that extra money to spend, so we’ve had to get more creative with getting people in to shop.”

What are you known for? “I think we are known for our snarky, inappropriate cups. Especially around holidays, we sell a lot of them. I think we’re also more known for our basic apparel, more casual-wear, and our lower prices.”

When did you start and why?

Halle: “This is our fourth year owning Rye & Rust. It started out as paintings and redone furniture. We mostly started it because we are crafters, and we like to do crafty work. Then it developed into a little bit of clothes and then full-blown clothes. But we still have our décor.”

Michelle: “Halle moved back, and we decided to open the store and I resigned from teaching, so here we are. We’ve had a physical location since August.”

What does your store offer?

Halle: “Home décor, western home décor, western clothing, accessories. We also have casual clothes.”

Michelle: “We have a variety of everything. Anything we can find that’s unique that we feel Bismarck-Mandan doesn’t have, we try to get in.”

What do you enjoy about being a business in Mandan?

Halle: “The community. All the small shops around here are really united. If someone is doing something, we will get a message. Everyone is in

contact with each other, and we’re all very friendly. It’s about what can we do to include each other and grow the need for shopping here.”

Michelle: “Even the customers that come in, they’re so appreciative that Mandan is expanding on what they need here. They’re just thankful that we came and brought some Western clothing, or we have a men’s line. They’re appreciative, and they keep coming back which we appreciate.”

Why did you choose the name Rye & Rust?

Halle: “I get this question all the time. When we started, we were going to junk markets. What you find at a junk market, that’s the rust. Then I just googled another ‘R’ word and rye sounded good, so we went with it.”

Who? Taya Felch, owner and master esthetician

Where? The Skin Boutique and Hair Lounge

When did you open The Skin Boutique? “The Skin Boutique has been open for three years now.”

Why did you open The Skin Boutique? “I was an esthetician for my mom in Bismarck, and I wanted to expand. The industry has gotten a lot bigger in the last couple years, so I knew there was a need for a bigger spa in the area, and we didn’t really have anything in Mandan at the time. I wanted to bring something here as far as beauty services.”

What kind of services and products do you offer? “We offer massage. We have now started offering nails as well, pedicures. Lashes, brows, facial services. We’re close to a full-service salon and spa. I wanted to make sure that everything I offered and sold was clean. So clean beauty, free of the big toxins, making sure your beauty services are safe and sustainable. We have a few

hair stylists that rent from us as well. We have a whole retail store. That’s all clean beauty, too. We use mostly Farmhouse Fresh which is clean, and they’re also an animal rescue.”

What do you enjoy about being a business in Mandan? “I grew up here, and there used to not be a lot in Mandan, so it’s nice that we’re growing. I talk to a lot of the boutique owners, and we all agree that it’s nice that we have stuff here. The support has been really good as far as people coming to Mandan more to enjoy those things. “ I was out for a walk late one night with my camera and was experimenting with some different camera settings.  There was another shot I had in mind that I was trying to get, but it wasn’t turning out as I had hoped.  As I was moving to a different location to try a new angle, the rail yard caught my eye.  Right in the heart of town is this hub of activity that is bustling, even while the rest of the town is sleeping.  I set up and snapped the photo.  The timing was perfect, as a crew arrived to work on the train a few seconds after I took the photo.”

“I took this photograph on the night before my youngest daughter’s wedding.  We had the rehearsal dinner at her future in-laws home that night in Mandan, where I took the photo.   Her father, my husband, had recently retired from BNSF railroad after 40 years during that time he had spent many hours working on the railroad bridge.  The sun was setting, and the riverboat was passing under the bridge; it provided a pretty moment to capture. The cotton candy sky and the spirit that bridges, two cities, on that night two families became one.”

“ A friend and I had been at the Mandan On A Slant Village listening to some beautiful flute music by Matt Schanandore.  As we were leaving the park, I noticed the sun was setting and the clouds were allowing for some amazing light effects. The North Dakota Veterans Cemetery is a sacred place to me, as my father, Paul Miller is at rest there along with many others who sacrificed much for their country. He was involved in battle in Europe during WW2. My mother is also at rest there. I stop by often to take photos of the cemetery as it is on my way to my childhood home of Huff, ND.”
