A COMMUNITY WELLNESS EVENT BISMARCK CANCER CENTER

It’s project HOPE time again! Join the Bismarck Cancer Center to spread cancer awareness and education throughout the Bismarck/Mandan area the week of May 2-6, 2022. This colorful wellness event seeks to educate the community on healthy lifestyle choices, cancer prevention, and early detection and encourages hope for the future.

Project HOPE week is set aside to focus on a different type of cancer and raise awareness each day of the week. Participating businesses are asked to allow employees to dress casually and wear the cancer ribbon colors for the designated day. 2022’s featured cancers include lung, breast, colorectal, and prostate. We celebrate all cancer SURVIVORS on the last day of project HOPE week with a purple survivorship day.

To participate in project HOPE, employees can make a $10 donation to the Bismarck Cancer Center Foundation. In return, businesses will be provided with wellness information, posters, stickers, an awareness newsletter, and more. This year, participants can get an ‘online’ version of the wellness booklet instead of a printed copy if they choose. All proceeds from project HOPE go towards BCCF and are used to support cancer patients with lodging, transportation, spiritual counseling, massage therapy, dietary counseling, and much more.

The past two years have challenged and changed all of us at the Bismarck Cancer Center. I’ve watched with pride as our employees have adapted to the pandemic, survived our most significant construction project to date, and innovated to provide cancer care safely and effectively through it all. What hasn’t changed is our drive to effectively treat cancer and our commitment to our patients and their families, community, and each other.

Your generous contributions in 2021 helped us reach our Foundation goal and helped us raise $2.5 million for our Capital Campaign. These donations have enabled us to expand our cancer care and essential services.

With Dr. John Watkins, Radiation Oncologist, BCC Q: What are some things I can do to help prevent cancer?

A: What’s known about cancer prevention is still evolving. However, it’s well-accepted that your chances of developing cancer can be impacted by the lifestyle choices you make. When it comes to cancer prevention, a few simple changes can make a difference. Consider these cancer-prevention tips: a combination of a healthy diet, regular physical activity, and maintaining a healthy body weight are all key factors in cancer prevention. It is also important to avoid known cancer causing substances: limit alcohol use, avoid tobacco, protect skin from sun, and avoid indoor tanning, to name a few. While there are many cancer causing factors over which you have limited control, you can incorporate important cancer prevention measures in your daily life.

One of the most important preventative steps is getting regular medical care. Self-exams and screening for various types of cancers such as skin, colon, cervix, prostate, and breast, can increase your chances of discovering cancer early. Contact your healthcare provider to learn more about prevention and screening opportunities. Prevention and early detection are the first step in fighting the battle.

SHIRLEY Shirley joined the Bismarck Cancer Center in 2009 in Cancer Registry.

She says her daily routine is unique, and her job allows her to develop relationships with many wonderful people. Shirley grew up in Ashley/ Venturia, ND, and in her spare time, enjoys refurbishing antique furniture, trying new recipes, art, and rollerblading. She says, “I try to follow in my mom’s footprints by getting crafty once in a while.

Julie grew up in Minot, ND, and graduated from Bishop Ryan High School. She has her BA in psychology, nursing degree, and master’s degree in Forensic nursing. She has worked at the Bismarck Cancer Center for almost eight years and says, “I like the patient population that I work with. It is very fulfilling to make a difference in people’s lives.” In Julie’s spare time, she enjoys being outside, doing yard work, and spending time with family.

BISMARCK CANCER CENTER

NEW EMPLOYEES

Mandee joined BCC in January of 2022 as a Tumor Registrar for the Central North Dakota Cancer Registry (CNDCR). She previously worked as a licensed veterinary technician. Mandee received a Bachelor of Science degree in veterinary technology and is originally from Williston, ND. She said, “I love knowing my work behind the scenes collecting data will help create a better life for the present and future patient.” Mandee enjoys sand volleyball and reading in her spare time.

LaVae recently became the newest member of the business office as an Accounts Payable Representative. Before joining BCC, she was the Business Office Director at Edgewood Village.

LaVae is originally from Lakota, ND, and attended Dickinson State University. She enjoys DIY projects, gardening, and spending time with her family and dogs. LaVae stated, “Everyone is working to provide the best patient care and to meet patient needs with all the services available. I’m excited to be part of the team.”

Heidi joined BCC as a PRN nurse. She also works at Sanford Bismarck in the ICU and at Augusta Place. Heidi is originally from Bismarck and has a degree from NDSU in nursing, human development and family sciences. Heidi said, “After coming to appointments with family members and seeing how positive and helpful the staff were, I knew I wanted to be a part of BCC someday!”

Mary recently joined BCC as an Administrative Support Specialist. She grew up in New Salem and attended Mandan High School. She was motivated to work at BCC through volunteering with fundraising events over the past few years.

Mary stated, “I’m excited to work at BCC because it will enable me to do all the things, I’m passionate about in one place.” Mary enjoys camping with her family and helping with community events in her spare time.

Jen joined BCC as a CT Sim Tech in early 2022.

She was previously employed as an X-ray/CT Tech at CHI St. Alexius in Bismarck. Jen is originally from Bismarck and received her Bachelor of Science degree in Radiologic Technology from North Dakota State University, and Sanford School of Radiology in Sioux Falls, SD. She enjoys traveling, snowboarding, golfing, and playing with her puppy! Jen wanted

to work at BCC to connect and build relationships with patients impacted by cancer while making a difference in the community. She said, “It’s great to be part of such a positive environment while working with a great team.”

Allexis recently joined BCC as the Education and Outreach Coordinator. She grew up in Pollock, SD and graduated from Strasburg High School. Allexis has a Bachelor of Science degree in social work and a master’s degree in special education. She previously worked for Bismarck Public Schools.

Allexis was excited to join the cancer center as she loves helping people any way she can. She said, “My grandma was so important to me and she received the best care while being treated at the Bismarck Cancer Center. It is apparent that the common goal is to be helpful and caring to all individuals in time of need and that is exciting to me.”

BCC SCHOLARSHIPS

The Donna Johnson Memorial Scholarship provides two $1000 scholarships per year to individuals who are interested in and committed to the field of oncology and are pursuing a healthcare degree at any Bismarck College. Deadline to submit is April 14.

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE The Bismarck Cancer Center construction project is near completion! In late 2020, we began the most significant project to date, along with our Capital Campaign ‘Healing for Today, Building Hope for Tomorrow’.

The Cancer Center renovation and expansion includes: • Two new linear accelerators • A second CT machine • Three new exam rooms • The addition of a second floor The second floor includes a new conference room, expanded space for support services, additional meeting rooms, and more.

The Bismarck Cancer Center is beyond grateful to the many individual donors, businesses, and organizations who have supported the Cancer Center with this project. The ‘Healing for Today, Building Hope for Tomorrow’ campaign has raised

UNITE FOR THE FIGHT Help us Unite for the Fight as we celebrate cancer survivorship and raise funds for those enduring a cancer diagnosis. The first annual Unite for the Fight event will feature teams to honor and remember loved ones. Fundraise as an individual or get a team together to truly make a difference in the lives of so many individuals in our community and region.

STUDENT DONATIONS Many youth groups have donated generous gifts to the Bismarck Cancer Center these past few months. Girl Scout Troop 80019 donated 24 boxes of girl scout cookies, and also two separate donations of tie blankets from local churches. The Elgin Zion Lutheran Church Sunday school program and the Bismarck House of Prayer confirmation class made tie blankets for those under treatment at the Bismarck Cancer Center.

The event will take place Tuesday, June 28, at the ND State Capitol. Festivities will start with a survivorship ice cream social from 5-6 p.m., with the walk starting immediately after and lasting until 9 p.m.

All funds raised will go directly to the Bismarck Cancer Center Foundation to support the future of cancer care. Register today at bismarckcancercenter.com.

BISMARCK CANCER CENTER EXPANSION

open house & celebration The Bismarck Cancer Center held two open houses in March to celebrate the completion of their expansion. Hundreds of people came through the facility for clinic tours and refreshments. The open houses started with a warm welcome from Executive Director Amy Gross and included talks from representatives from both hospitals, the Leach Foundation and Bismarck Mayor Steve Bakken.

In late 2020, the Bismarck Cancer Center began the most significant expansion to date with the addition of a second floor and two new treatment machines. The project also included adding additional exam rooms, a second CT machine and an expanded conference room for education events and support groups.

The Bismarck Blizzard girl’s hockey team put on the annual “Stick it to Cancer” game against Dickinson on Tuesday, January 21. Both teams challenged their families and communities to raise money for the Bismarck Cancer Center Foundation. BCC had a booth at the game, and a silent auction. Over $6,000 was raised by the hockey teams! We are so thankful for their support!

How do you show your love? By donating to all the amazing charities participating in Giving Hearts Day! The Bismarck Cancer Center Foundation was truly humbled and filled with awe at the love showed upon it on February 10th! This year we were able to raise over $40,000 which will support the various needs of our patients.

BCCF board member, Duey Johnson, coordinated the third annual “Rug Rat Chili Cook-Off for Cancer on Saturday, March 5, at the Bismarck Eagles Club.

This event featured more than ten teams competing for judge’s choice and people’s choice in chili.

Local bluegrass band, Little Blue Stems, provided entertainment at the event, and a silent auction was also held. This event raised over $10,000, a record for this event!

The Bismarck Cancer Center was excited to be a recipient of the funds raised during the Mandan Leprechaun Pub Crawl. Sponsored by McQuade Distributing, this event had over 200 participants dressed in their best St. Patrick’s Day attire visit several bars in Mandan. This event raised over $1,000 for our foundation!

TR4 Heart and Soul therapeutic riding is teaming up with the Bismarck Cancer Center for the Downtown Derby at Borrowed Bucks Roadhouse on May 7, 2022. Proceeds from the event will support the Bismarck Cancer Center Foundation therapeutic riding program for patients and their families.

CARZ-N-CURES ~ JUNE 4, 2022

The 6th Annual Carz-n-Cures event will take place Saturday, June 4, at the ND State Capitol, NW parking lot. The car show is a family-friendly event hosted by Terry and Terri Schreiner. Registration for the car show is a free-will donation beginning at 8:30, with the event running from 10-2. This year enjoy special music featuring rising country music star Savanah Benz. There will also be a silent auction and free will donation lunch.

TRACTOR TREK ~ JUNE 4, 2022

On June 4, tractors will be lining Highway 1806 north of Mandan for the 4th annual Tractor Trek. Hosted by Perry and Bonnie Schlosser, the event features a trek to Harmon Lake and back to the Schlosser property. There is a $25 registration fee, and lunch is included. The event concludes with a silent auction.

BISMARCK CANCER CENTER GOLF OPEN ~ JUNE 16, 2022

The Bismarck Cancer Center Golf Open will take place Thursday, June 16, at Prairie West Golf Course, Mandan. This event will kick off with a ball drop by a Berg’s Towing Crane at 11 a.m., with golf starting at 11:30. Following golf, the event wraps up with a dinner, a silent, and a live auction.
