September 22 & 23, 2018 Applefest is celebrating its 12th year at the historic Buckstop Junction and is known as one of the best fall festivals in the Midwest!

The event is a celebration of the autumn harvest and where the charming, small-town atmosphere of Buckstop Junction comes alive with entertainment, fresh-baked goods, games, live music, and great food. “There are a few new additions to this year’s event that will make it even more fun for the family,” said Marketing Director, Sara Kelsch, “We are holding our first ‘Applefest 5k Fun Run’, which will start at Buckstop Junction on Sunday morning, September 23. We also have ‘The Voice’ contestant Blind Joe performing on Saturday, cupcake decorating with ‘Karmin’s Kitchen’ for the kids, an inflatable obstacle course, and much more!” But, what really makes Applefest so great? Is it the charming small-town atmosphere? The apple pie eating contest? Or the countless booths of fresh apple pies, caramel apples, ciders, and other fall treats? Most people would agree the best part of Applefest is the combination of a family fun event while helping to make a difference to those on their cancer journey.

All proceeds from Applefest benefit the Bismarck Cancer Center Foundation which provides an amazing array of services to help those going through cancer treatment. With these funds, the Bismarck Cancer Center is able to offer complimentary services including transportation and lodging assistance, spiritual counseling, support groups, nutritional care, survivorship care plans, massage and physical therapy. “What began as a way to bring the community together to lend support to cancer survivors has grown into a family tradition to attend year after year,” said Amy Gross, Executive Director at the Bismarck Cancer Center.

The Bismarck Cancer Center has been a proud part of the Bismarck community since 1999. Through the years, we have been committed to providing our region with the most updated and advanced radiation treatment possible.

Executive Director

OUR MISSION The mission of the Bismarck Cancer Center is to make locally available the highest quality, stateof-the-art radiation therapy services to persons with cancer within the Bismarck service area. Such services shall be delivered, insofar as possible, without regard to reimbursement, and always in a supportive compassionate, and caring manner.

Our goal is to have every patient who walks through the doors have access to cutting-edge, lifesaving equipment and technology, both now and in the future.

I am excited to announce new technological innovations that we have implemented at the Bismarck Cancer Center. First, we have implemented Vision RT technology. This technology tracks a patient’s position both before and during radiation therapy to help with treatment setup and accuracy. Vision RT uses infrared lasers to monitor patient position and movement and will signal for the radiation treatment to pause if the

Bismarck Cancer Center is seeking art for the 2018 edition of “The Art of Living,” a 12-month desk calendar.

Photography and artwork of all styles and media will be considered. Art can directly illustrate aspects of the cancer experience, but it is not required. We encourage patients, family, friends, physicians, employees, board members, donors and regional artists to submit work for consideration. You do not need to be a professional artist to be part of this amazing project.

In addition, the Bismarck Cancer Center will install a new CT Simulator towards the end of this year. This equipment will improve efficiency, workflow, and most importantly, image quality.

I am confident our new cutting-edge technology will be instrumental in improving the way we treat cancer and ultimately create better patient outcomes. I am profoundly grateful for your ongoing support as we continue to ensure access to the highest-quality cancer care for all who live in and around the Bismarck area.

GETTING TO KNOW YOUR

Technology Changes The Bismarck Cancer Center (BCC) is committed to providing individuals in our region with the most advanced and safest cancer treatment possible. This year, we are excited to announce several new technology improvements to our Center.

Bismarck Cancer Center Foundation Advisory Board

When treating cancer with radiation therapy, our goal is to deliver radiation while protecting surrounding healthy tissue from exposure and potential damage. The Bismarck Cancer Center recently obtained Vision RT, a technology that offers cancer patients more precisely targeted radiation treatment. For individuals with left breast cancer, Vision RT allows extra precautions to make sure the heart receives minimal radiation damage during treatment. Vision RT is a system which tracks a patient’s position before and during radiation therapy, to aid in setup and treatment accuracy. This technology can signal for treatment delivery to pause radiation if the patient moves out of the desired treatment position.

In addition, the Bismarck Cancer Center obtained MiM Software. This software is designed to help the radiation oncologist and the planning team accurately and efficiently merge images, such as MRI and PET/CT scans, with the CT simulation scan done at BCC in order to design a more precise treatment plan.

How many years have you served on the BCCF Advisory Board? About 2 years, I also served 2 years on the board of trustees prior to the advisory board.

Lastly, the Center will receive a new CT Simulator later this fall. The new simulator is especially suited for radiation oncology because CT scans of patients are procured in treatment position. It will also allow us to acquire scans at a faster rate, improve quality of images, performance, workflow and efficiency of CT simulations.

What is your favorite movie or TV show? Braveheart What is one thing on your bucket list?

I would love to go to Scotland

One of the goals of BCC has always been to provide world-class technology right here in Bismarck. As new and improved equipment and software becomes available, we are proud to bring it to our Center to better serve individuals in our region.

What do you do in your spare time?

My wife and I both volunteer a lot as well as watch a lot of hockey.

Day of Caring

What motivated you to get involved with the foundation? I am so moved by the beautiful care that is given to the patients and families that come to the Bismarck Cancer Center. The care goes beyond the state of the art technical component. The care provided envelops the patient in a healing environment that touches their mind, body, and spirit. It is through this culture of compassionate care that our patients can once again feel whole.

Everyone has a different journey through their cancer treatment and the Bismarck Cancer Center is poised to address any need in a holistic, patient-centered culture.

The United Way Day of Caring brought together 1300 energetic volunteers to help non-profit businesses across the cities of Bismarck/Mandan on August 15th. The Bismarck Cancer Center was lucky enough to get the help of 15 Brady Martz & Associates employees to plant, paint, and clean patient housing and apartments. Apple trees and supplies were donated by Cashman Nursery, North Sherwin Williams, and Menards, and lunch was donated for the volunteers by MacKenzie River Pizza. Thank you Brady Martz for continuing to show your dedication to the Bismarck community!

What is your favorite/most memorable moment since being on the board?

My favorite moments are when I visit with people who were patients at the Bismarck Cancer Center and they tell me how grateful they are to have this quality institution with world-class patient care right here in our community.

Why are you passionate about supporting the Bismarck Cancer Center? We are all touched by cancer in some way or another. It brings me joy knowing, in some respects, that I had a small role in helping someone through a challenging part of their life.

BCCF EVENTS Beers & Boutiques

Courage Against Cancer

The Bismarck Cancer Center Foundation volunteers headed downtown this summer for the second annual Beers & Boutiques event. During this event, participants followed a map to different boutiques in the downtown area to shop exclusive sales, try beer samples and get their Beer Passports stamped. We would like to thank McQuade Distributing and the Downtowners for making this event happen!

Courage Against Cancer returned this year with its iconic half-marathon and 5K events.

Around 30 walkers, runners and bikers of all ages traveled from Zeeland to Hague, a total of about 13 miles, to raise money for cancer awareness. About 15 individuals participated in the 5K fun run/walk. As everyone arrived in Hague after both events, a lunch was provided to participants along with a ceremonial balloon release.

Bismarck Larks Night The Bismarck Larks honored BCCF as the “Charity of the Night” on multiple occasions this summer.

During a game in late June, the Larks donned special jerseys which honored Satchel Paige and were auctioned off throughout the game in support of BCCF. Throughout the season, the Larks also hosted multiple “Miracle Minutes” to raise additional funds. We would like to thank the Bismarck Larks for raising over $5,300 for BCCF!

Blue Grass Goes Pink Blue Grass Goes Pink kicked off with a 5K & 10K Fun Run in the morning. By late afternoon, there were serious threats of tornados and inclement weather coming for Cross Ranch State Park. Despite the unfavorable conditions, around 250 individuals came out for the dinner and concert, and it ended up being a gorgeous night. It is with special thanks we acknowledge Cotton Wood Bluegrass Band for their six years of support. We are also grateful for the volunteers from Washburn area churches for providing food for the crowd. The day of events raised $5,160 for the BCCF.

SAVE THE DATE! 12th Annual

Dickinson project HOPE This summer, businesses in the western North Dakota communities of Dickinson, Richardton, Bowman, Hettinger and Lemmon participated in project HOPE. This event is a week-long awareness campaign designed to educate the community about cancer detection and prevention.

Businesses participate by wearing a different color each day to bring awareness to a different kind of cancer. This year’s awareness days included breast, head and neck, colorectal, skin and survivorship. The participating businesses raised over $8,000 this year, which is one of the best years yet!

Through the Foundation, the Bismarck Cancer Center is able to offer an array of complementary services including transportation assistance, lodging assistance, emotional and spiritual counseling, support groups, dietary counseling, survivorship care plans, massage, and physical therapy.

My Hero Program

Drive to Survive

The Bismarck Cancer Center knows that the battle with cancer can be difficult and life-changing. During this personal journey, different people may have touched your life and helped you win your battle or merely lessened your load. For others, a professional or a friend may have made a significant contribution to your fight against cancer that made a positive impact on you or others in the community.

After a long-anticipated wait, Drive to Survive arrived mid-August. The day kicked off with a Meet & Greet race car show in the Bismarck Cancer Center parking lot. Over 200 adults and children came out to have lunch and mingle with drivers of the Dacotah Speedway. There were many opportunities to give throughout the day including a free-will donation for lunch, a $200 prize raffle, donation jar and live auction for a car hood signed by drivers of the Dacotah Speedway.

The final amount raised is not yet totaled for this event.

Mandan Road Race The annual Mandan Road Race returned to our community this Independence Day. Over 500 runners took to the streets in Mandan to complete a 5K run/walk in their best Fourth of July garb. This year’s attendance and enthusiasm shattered records for the event. Over $7,000 was raised to help patients at the Bismarck Cancer Center.

Saddle Up Against Cancer Around 70 horseback riders gathered this year for the 11th annual Saddle Up Against Cancer. Riders and their horses made their way to Wilton for a two hour ride through North Dakota’s rolling hills and farmland. The ride was followed by a luncheon, silent auction and bucket raffle.

This event is a favorite for individuals in the rural communities around Bismarck. The final total is not yet known for this event.

Survivorship Picnic This June, BCC hosted the annual Survivorship Picnic.

Survivors and their families were invited to Sertoma Park for dinner, dessert and entertainment.

In just about two hours, staff and volunteers served over 800 individuals. Dinner was followed by a signature Cold Stone Creamery ice cream social. This years’ Picnic saw its largest attendance ever, and it was a great night! We would like to thank Caffe Aroma for catering and Cotton Wood Band for providing entertainment. “This event has grown so much over the years and is a time to celebrate cancer survivorship for so many. We are honored to be able to celebrate with each survivor,” said Tara Schilke, Director of Nursing.

The Bismarck Cancer Center has developed the “My Hero” program as a way to give back and honor your hero.

All “Hero” nominees will be invited to a special reception this fall in their honor where they will be recognized for making a difference in your life.

The guidelines to nominate someone are as follows: •

Individuals that may be “My Hero”: a friend, family member, community professional, a volunteer, a clergy member or other.

My Hero has made a significant or meaningful contribution to my cancer journey or the journey of others.

•

My Hero has contributed to individuals in their cancer journeys through education, screening, care, support, time, assistance or other significant ways.

Staff News Kelsy has joined the staff of the Bismarck Cancer Center as a PRN Oncology Nurse. Kelsy grew up in Drayton, ND and received her RN degree from the University of North Dakota. She moved to Bismarck in 2010 and that is where her oncology experience began. She started at Medcenter One and worked in the inpatient oncology floor for five years until she went to the oncology clinic at Sanford Health Bismarck. She’s very exited to be a part of BCC and to expand her oncology knowledge.
