OUR MISSION The mission of the Bismarck Cancer Center is to make locally available the highest quality, state-of-the-art radiation therapy services to persons with cancer within the Bismarck service area. Such services shall be delivered, insofar as possible, without regard to reimbursement, and always in a supportive compassionate, and caring manner.

APPLEFEST 2014 Scrumptious apple desserts, live music, and activities for both young and old to enjoy, are what keep the crowds coming back to Applefest, year after year. The 8th Annual Applefest will be held September 20-21 at Buckstop Junction and, with more activities and events than ever, it will be sure to keep festival goers of any age entertained.

“Applefest has become so much more than a fundraising event.

We are not only raising money for the Bismarck Cancer Center Foundation, but we are hosting a community event that provides family-friendly entertainment” – Amy Gross, Applefest chair.

Children’s entertainment includes: petting zoo, pony rides, carnival games, balloon animals, face painting, a coloring contest and much more.

To keep the bigger kids entertained, there’s paintball shooting, mini golf, a bake sale or an apple pie eating contest.

While entertainment schedules are not yet finalized, Applefest always features a handful of new attractions, as well as several returning favorites. Musical bands will fill up both days at the music tent and at the church. In addition to great entertainment, event attendees will find a record number of food and craft vendors to shop from. Children’s entertainment includes: petting zoo, pony rides, carnival games, balloon animals, face painting, a coloring contest and much more.

Driven to help the Foundation provide services to each patient, staff members volunteer time, above and beyond work hours, to plan, host and work the event. Run by BCC staff, their families and community volunteers, Applefest is all about helping meet patient needs. The staff at BCC truly enjoy the opportunity to give back to their patients.

Applefest proceeds go directly to the BCC Foundation, which helps patients with a multitude of complimentary support services. “By providing services for the whole patient, we can ensure each of our patients’ needs are met,” says Amy. “Applefest provides significant support to those battling cancer. The funds raised at Applefest go directly to helping make the journey easier for our patients by providing the wrap-around services that help the mind-body-spirit.” Support services include transportation assistance, lodging assistance, massage therapy, dietary care, survivorship care plans, emotional and spiritual care, and more.

If you don’t think every day is a good day, just try missing one.

EVERY DAY IS A GOOD DAY Like many of you, I constantly battle a host of illnesses. In the process, it seems that, from time to time, there’s always a generous measure of discomfort, pain, and general inconvenience that gets in the way of how I’d prefer to spend my time and energy. I had one of those episodes recently and immediately felt so very sorry for myself that I was a misery to be around (and it wasn’t much fun for me, either).

to time, like me, you need to remember that “Every Day Is A Good Day!” After all, as the old saying goes, “Positive anything is better than negative nothing.”

Fortunately, I came across a Cavett Robert quote that helped pick up my spirits and point them in a more positive and realistic direction: “If you don’t think every day is a good day, just try missing one.” It caused me to laugh at my “woe is me” attitude and refocus my thinking…and, it reminded me of another quote, this one

by Patricia Neal: “A strong positive mental attitude will create more miracles than any wonder drug.”

And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,

It isn’t easy to come out of one of these “blue funks,” but it’s something we can and need to do when such moods overcome us. In my own recent case, I was amazed at how much difference working toward regaining my positive attitude made. I was very blessed by King Solomon’s reminder (very similar to the passage in 2 Cor. 4.17-18 of the Holy Bible) that, “Just actively doing something about my mood helped–as did focusing on the understanding that ‘This too shall pass.’”

So, I was able to emerge from my little self-oriented pity party. Maybe it wasn’t a heroic battle, but it was still good to be back in control of myself, knowing that I was put here in this place to make a positive difference for others, not to play a useless game of “Ain’t It Awful?” Like Jack Dempsey observed, “A champion is one who gets up when he can’t.” That’s a pretty good accomplishment in my book!

walking the TALK: Jay Risk Bismarck Cancer Center counted on Jay Risk from day one. Employed by both Bismarck Cancer Center (BCC) and MedCenter One (Sanford Health), he shared time between buildings – and was instrumental in helping Dr. Kubsad as BCC commissioned the first radiation machine at the center. As the center became progressively more and more busy, Risk became employed with BCC full time.

“BCC initially had one linear accelerator; we now have two,” Risk said. “One machine was sufficient fifteen years ago. As time passed, we found it made sense to have two – reducing the difficulties incurred at those remote times when the machine was down.

Now, not only can we treat more patients, patients are seldom rescheduled due to technical difficulties.

Further, I’m still learning. I’ve been to various training to understand how to use the treatment machines.

To me, the outcome of having two mirror-image machines is significant. We can move patients back and forth between bays as needed.”

Risk is the biomedical and facilities maintenance engineer at BCC today. He cares for everything mechanical (heating and air conditioning) – ensuring everything is operational and functioning or will find a person who can. “I guess I’m a jack-of-all-trades,” Risk said. “In some cases, I run into an involved breakdown or repair and recognize I’ll need help since it’s more involved. Ordinarily, though, I strive to be “that guy” who others can count on to get things going.”

Nominated for the Bismarck Cancer Center Walk the Talk Award, Risk exemplifies a team player who goes the extra mile. “Jay our bioengineer here at the center,” Melissa says. “He not only keeps our treatment machine up and running; he is always right there to help.”

Charity concurs. “Jay has helped a co-worker search for an apartment, has helped replace a car headlight bulb for another. He cares for behind the scenes things such as filling the soda machine and paying attention to how things run. When things aren’t quite right, he’s investigating to ensure they run smoothly.”

Melissa says he makes sure people around him find their problem significant. “He never makes us feel like we’ve asked a ‘dumb’ question and will repeat or talk us through it until we understand,” she says.

Risk makes himself available to help outside of regular business hours, as well. Early or late, he treats staff as he’d want to be treated. “An early morning call could mean one of the accelerators isn’t starting up; this is critical, since it delivers the radiation to patients,” he says. And he knows the emotional side of patients as they arrive for appointments. “My own family members, including my wife, mother, mother-in-law and father-in-law have all been treated for cancer. None of them would have appreciated the added stress of being turned away due to an equipment malfunction. I consider that when an early morning call comes from the center. It’s larger than me. It’s about ensuring each patient is treated the way I’d treat my own family. To do so, I willingly take early calls, late calls or work until the job is complete.”

WALK THE TALK

The treatment machine delivers a high dose energy beam to treat cancerous tumors specifically.

Physicists calculate the appropriate dose which then is delivered to either shrink the tumor – or hopefully, to eliminate the cancer cells altogether.

“Late phone calls can mean the center has experienced a power outage or an alarm is going off for oxygen. I perform a search-and-rescue to figure out what the noise, smell, sound or beeping is all about,” he says.

“Jay not only works on the radiation equipment, he’s eagerly helped out when little things become big things,” Charity says. “When lights are burned out in our changing rooms, timing is everything.

Jay steps up. He comes in early to make sure there are no issues and it’s not uncommon for him to stay late to calibrate the machines.”

“Jay is not only efficient, he’s a true team player; we are extremely lucky to have him on our team at BCC,” Melissa says.

When Jay isn’t working, he enjoys spending time with his wife, Patti. Together, they enjoy playing music together; she plays piano, he plays sax. They share two children: Grant (21) and Allie (deceased at 15 due to an auto immune disease HLH– (Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis). “We spend a lot of time cooking together, playing games or just plain being together,” he says.

WELCOME DR. RUSSO

FAREWELL DR. WATKINS At the end of June, we bid a sad farewell to Dr. John Watkins. Dr. Watkins resigned from his position at the Bismarck Cancer Center and has moved to Iowa to be closer to family.

During his time at the Bismarck Cancer Center, Dr. Watkins provided excellent care and compassion for our cancer patients; and we hope you will join us in wishing him well as he embarks on his future endeavors.

CHERIE KRUEGER RETIRES Financial Services Manager Cherie Krueger has retired from the Bismarck Cancer Center (BCC). Cherie started at BCC in October of 1999, just two weeks after BCC opened, as a patient account representative.

Cherie held this position until July of 2007 when she then became the Financial and Support Services Manager. In this role, Cherie worked with financial reporting, all accounts payable, patient accounts and supervised five staff members.

Cherie’s favorite memories of working at BCC were dressing up with fellow staff for holidays, working events such as Applefest, and also spending time with her co-workers. Cherie stated that she will miss all the people, interaction with patients, and Bismarck Cancer Center Foundation events.

In her retirement, Cherie plans on spending more time with her grandchildren, traveling, relaxing, and volunteer work. Cherie and her husband Roger have two children and three grandchildren.

Lolly Dutton, who had the position of patient account representative, has taken over the role of Financial and Support Services Manager.

Dr. Kyle Russo joined the Bismarck Cancer Center as a Radiation Oncologist in June of 2014. He replaced Dr. John Watkins, who moved to Iowa to be closer to family. Dr. Russo is a graduate of the Louisiana State University School of Medicine in Shreveport and completed his radiation residency at Medical University of South Carolina in Charlestown. Dr. Russo comes to us from E+OncoLogics in Lafayette, Louisiana. Dr. Russo is a member of the American Society for Therapeutic Radiation Oncology.

“I am excited to be part of this great organization and their commitment to treating cancer.

I look forward to continuing to provide the expertise and compassion that the Bismarck Cancer Center is known for,” said Dr. Russo.

Dr. Russo brings his wife and a daughter with him to the Bismarck community. Please help us welcome Dr. Russo to the Bismarck Cancer Center!

Every day was fun for us.”

BIKE2BELIEVE Three young adventurous men from North Dakota biked across America this summer with the goal of raising $500,000 for cancer causes. The three young men included Joe Berger, a University of Mary student-athlete; Devin Coyle, a University of North Dakota student-athlete; and Brock Schauer, all Mandan natives. Their journey, which is called “Bike 2 Believe,” took them through 12 states in a mere 34 days of biking. “Everyone’s affected by cancer in some shape or form,” Joe said. “It really hits home.”

Devin were able to attend a Minnesota Twins game and got the chance to sing, “Take Me Out to the Ballgame,” with Joe Mauer. Upon reaching the white sand of Florida’s Clearwater Beach, the three stepped off their bikes and ran into the Gulf of Mexico. Devin stated that the trek was easier than they expected, due in large part to the personal connections they made along the way. “It was easy for us to stay inspired and ride each day when we met people who were fighting for their lives, literally, every day,” he said.

Joe, Devin and Brock have all been affected by cancer in their lives and felt inspired to raise awareness and funds to show support to all of those who have been touched by this disease.

The trio started on their 2,500 mile trek on May 31, following a kick-off party at the University of Mary in Bismarck. Their route took them through Fargo, Minneapolis and Rochester, Minnesota; Madison, Wisconsin; Chicago, Indianapolis, Louisville, Kentucky; Nashville, Tennessee, and Atlanta before reaching St. Petersburg, Florida, on July 3. Brock stated, “There wasn’t a day that we dreaded biking. Every day was fun for us.”

“It was so amazing for us, how positive these people are, even if they have to wake up for treatment,” Devin said. “When we set out on this journey, we wanted to inspire people. We ended up being the ones inspired by them.”

Along the road, they stopped at over 15 cancer facilities and cancer support groups to visit with staff and cancer patients.

The three formed Bike 2 Believe with the goal of raising $400,000 for the Bismarck Cancer Center Foundation and an additional $100,000 for the American Cancer Society. To date, the trio has raised over $235,000, which includes in-kind donations.

Highlights of the trip included tours of Mayo Clinic in Rochester, calling bingo at a Hope Lodge in Minneapolis, and several Gilda’s Club visits. At St. Francis Oncology, the group was met in the parking lot with staff from the clinic, welcoming them with applause and welcome signs. They also had the opportunity to participate in a camp at the Gilda’s Club in Louisville for children whose families are affected by cancer. In Nashville, they were part of their first-ever Relay for Life. In addition to cancer-related facilities, Joe, Brock and through hope. help. healing.

BCCF EVENTS PROJECT HOPE EVENTS Across North Dakota The fourth annual Bismarck and Mandan project HOPE event broke records this year with more than 130 businesses participating! The number of participating businesses increased once again from last year, making this event our largest to date. This project HOPE effort raised more than $134,000.

Project HOPE was also held in the communities of Harvey and McClusky the week of June 2-6.

This new project HOPE event had over 20 businesses participate.

The second annual Dickinson project HOPE event was held July 21-25. This event had over 20 participating businesses and raised over $5000.

Project HOPE is a community wellness event designed to educate employees about healthy lifestyles, cancer prevention and early detection, and to promote hope for a healthier tomorrow.

Participating businesses allowed their employees to dress casually and/or wear the cancer ribbon colors on the designated day in support of cancer awareness. The top four most diagnosed cancers in North Dakota were featured during that week.

They included skin cancer, gynecological cancer, prostate cancer, and colorectal cancer. In addition, survivorship was celebrated.

To participate in project HOPE, each employee was asked to make a donation of $10 to the Bismarck Cancer Center Foundation. In return for their donation and participation, Bismarck Cancer Center provided each business with posters, an awareness newsletter, stickers, wellness information and more.

VOLKOWITSCH GOLF SCRAMBLE

On June 14, the Annual Volkowitsch Golf Scramble was held to benefit the Bismarck Cancer Center Foundation and the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

This year was a great success with around 140 golfers joining in, making up 36 teams to golf 18 holes.

Despite the rain and wind, the spirits of the golfers could not be deterred because of the great cause they were playing for. Golfers dressed in various outfits ranging from women in pirates costumes to a group of guys in short shorts and tank tops; nothing could stop these golfers from having a great time. The amount raised this year from the scramble and silent and live auction was $15,500 for the Bismarck Cancer Center Foundation and $10,000 for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

HARLEYWOOD NIGHTS BIKER RUN 140 bikers roared in to the send-off from the Harley-Davidson Roughrider shop, for the Harleywood Nights Biker Run. The sun was out, and the wind was minimal, which made for great motorcycle weather. Over one hundred bikes participated in the run, and had an amazing time stopping in New Salem, Center, Washburn, Brush Lake, and Wilton. The run ended at the Corral Bar, where a motorcycle was raffled off and a high/ low poker hand was announced. The 2nd Annual Harleywood Nights Run ended with a live band from Las Vegas and was an incredible fundraiser for the Bismarck Cancer Center Foundation.

DEMON RUN

In the first annual Running with the Demons on Saturday, July 19, nearly 150 runners/walkers joined in on this fun race. With the mighty Demon football team leading the pack, the race started with a rush of people as they marched by. The Running with the Demons’ race raised money to help cover some costs for the football team and to help raise money for the Bismarck Cancer Center Foundation.

UPCOMING EVENTS:

JULY 4TH MANDAN ROAD RACE

On your marks. Get Set. Go. The Mandan 4th of July road race started with a bang when more than 300 runners lined up to run, jog, and walk the parade route 5k. People joined in from all over the Bismarck-Mandan area to partake in this fun and exciting patriotic race. Many of the runners were dressed in red, white, and blue colors, and gladly participated knowing that the money would be benefitting the Bismarck Cancer Center Foundation. Not only did these racers display their pride of their country, they also showed support to the friends and family that live in this area and are fighting cancer. With the last participant making it through the finish, this year’s road race ended with smiles on the racers’ faces, and an overall success for the Mandan Road Race committee and the BCCF.

RUG RATS BENEFIT SOFTBALL

The 7th Annual Rug Rats Benefit Softball tournament took place June 6-7 and was a big “hit” with a full roster of 48 teams joining in on the softball fun. Warm, sunny, and full of refreshments, the Rug Rats games brought in many players and fans to participate in the fun. The Bismarck Cancer Center had a silent auction going throughout the day on Saturday, and had many items donated that brought in a great response of bids. Overall, this year the Rug Rats event was a great success and provided the Bismarck Cancer Center Foundation with fantastic support.

BOILERMAKER’S GOLF TOURNAMENT

This year’s Boilermaker’s Charity Golf Tournament tee’d off to a good start on Saturday, July 26th. Eighteen four-person golf teams played at the Hazen Golf Course on a beautiful day. The sun was out, the greens were rolling, and the teams not only played golf, but some fun games as well. After the eighteen holes of golf were played, there was a dinner and Bucket Auction to join in on. The money raised is still being tallied, and overall it was a very successful and fun day of charity.

MY HERO PROGRAM The Bismarck Cancer Center knows that the battle with cancer is difficult and life-changing. During this personal journey, different people may have touched you in special ways that helped you win your battle or merely lessened your load. For others, a professional or a friend may have made a significant contribution to our fight against cancer that made a positive impact on the others or the community.

The Bismarck Cancer Center has developed the “My Hero” program as a way to give back and honor your hero.

All “Hero” nominees will be invited to a special reception next spring in their honor where they will be recognized for making a difference in your life. In addition, your nomination will be listed on our website.

The guidelines to nominate someone are as follows: •

Individuals that may be “My Hero”: a friend, family member, community professional, a volunteer, a clergy member or other.

My Hero has made a significant or meaningful contribution to my cancer journey or the journey of others.

•

My Hero has contributed to individuals in their cancer journeys through education, screening, care, support, time, assistance or other significant way.

THE ART OF LIVING Calendar 2015

The Bismarck Cancer Center is seeking visual art for the 2015 edition of “The Art of Living,” a 12-month desk calendar.

Photography and artwork of all styles and media will be considered. Art can directly illustrate aspects of the cancer experience, but it is not required.

We encourage patients, family, friends, physicians, employees, board members, donors, and regional artists to submit works for consideration. You do not need to be a professional artist to be a part of this amazing project.

RELAY FOR LIFE

Bismarck Cancer Center Staff and their families participated in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life in June.

NEW EMPLOYEES Brandon Wangler is a Human Resource and Billing Specialist. He previously worked at the Missouri Valley YMCA. He attended Dickinson State and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration, with a minor in human resources.

Tammy Heid was name Financial Counselor. She most recently worked at Sanford Bismarck as Patient Accounting Lead. She had held that position for 11 years and prior to that, ran a home daycare.

Jennifer Grinolds is the new Front Desk Receptionist.

She previously worked at Family Vision Clinic as part of the administrative staff. Prior to that, she worked at Touchmark as a Membership Coordinator for their Health and Fitness Center.

THE DONNA JOHNSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Bismarck Cancer Center Foundation (BCCF) Donna Johnson Memorial Scholarship program announced that Britney Schneider and Leah Wuebben have been awarded $1000 scholarships. These students are committed to providing the care and needs for cancer patients in the future.

Britney Schneider of Dickinson, North Dakota, will be attending Bismarck State College in the fall. After a family member was diagnosed with cancer, she decided she wanted to help those with cancer. “Being able to bring joy to others and find a cure for cancer would be the biggest accomplishments someone could ever pursue,” said Britney.

Leah Wuebben of Perham, Minnesota is currently attending the University of Mary in Bismarck, ND, studying Radiologic Technology with the intent to be a Radiation Therapist.

“I feel that this is a rewarding field because I will be serving others and helping to heal them,” said Leah.

The Donna Johnson Memorial Scholarship Award was created to provide scholarships to individuals who are interested in and committed to a field in oncology. through hope. help. healing.

SURVIVORSHIP PICNIC This year’s Survivorship Picnic was held on June 18. The 5th annual picnic featured a picnic dinner, ice cream treats and special music from the band Cottonwood, which features Bismarck Cancer Center nurse Jill Wiese. Although the weather was not ideal, almost 400 people attended this celebration of cancer survivorship with many people ranging from 15 years to those who were two weeks cancer-free. This picnic also provides the Bismarck Cancer Center employees an opportunity to visit with survivors of the surrounding area.
