OVC DINING ACTIVITY GUIDE

Louisville’s not only a great place for fast swimming, it’s one of the top choices for food and fun. Here’s a few Lakeside SeaHawk recommendations for things to do and see between OVC sessions.

CAPTAIN’S QUARTERS

Captain’s Quarters offers the best in riverside dining in the region. Nestled along the scenic banks of the Ohio River, Captain’s Quarters Riverside Grille offers delicious seafood dishes, international cuisine and an array of refined American fare – all served in a picturesque atmosphere.

DIORIO’S PIZZA

Founded by four friends here in Louisville, DiOrio’s Pizza serves an outstanding product at a fair price. Handtossed New York style pizza by the slice and more. Full bar, plasma TVs, dine in and carry out. Dough is made FRESH daily in house to ensure a perfect crust, and the DiOrio’s sauce is one of a kind... come in and try a slice after the meet or between sessions.

DUNDEE TAVERN

Located in the historic Douglas Loop, the Dundee Tavern has been a Highlands neighborhood favorite for decades. Come join us for cold beer, sports, and the best pub grub in town!

HAVANA RUMBA & MOJITOS TAPAS

For those looking to take a trip to the Caribbean without needing a passport, Havana Rumba and Mojito Tapas have you covered. The menus are full of family recipes featuring famous Cuban dishes and sandwiches and salads. All are created fresh daily, with generous portions at great prices.

HEINE BROS. COFFEE

At Heine Brothers’ we are committed to finding and roasting the best tasting organic and fair trade coffees in the world. We’re equally committed to doing this in a way that results in coffee farmers and our planet being treated with respect and dignity. Come visit one of our many locations around Louisville to see what makes us unique!

KERN’S KORNER

Home of the famous Kern’s Cheeseburger, Chili, and Coldest Beer in town! Neighborhood bar that cheers on UofL Cards, UofK Wildcats, Chicago Cubs and our local Lakeside SeaHawks. Walking distance from the OVC!

LOUISVILLE ORIGINALS

Support 22 independently owned restaurants “Keeping Louisville Weird.” Louisville Originals offer the Rewards Card, a customer loyalty program for frequent dining, a universal gift card, and a YouTube channel featuring our member chefs sharing their stories. Like us on social media to get connected.

NORTH END CAFE

Try the made-from-scratch approach to New York-style thin crust pizza at the new North End Slice adjacent to the Highlands North End Cafe! This locally owned and operated eatery is quickly becoming a Louisville landmark.

SEVICHE

A Latin restaurant that consistently ranks as one of Louisville’s best establishments with a laid-back yet stylish atmosphere. The menu showcases the freshest seafood and local artisan ingredients. Seviche also offers a unique private dining area available for events and corporate gatherings.

SHENANIGANS IRISH GRILLE

Tucked away in the heart of the Highlands, you’ll find a Louisville gem. If you are looking for a place that feels like home with even better food, look no further than Shenanigans Irish Grille. They serve some of Louisville’s most delicious pub fare and are always a local favorite. 2018

The 90th Ohio Valley Championship:

A SUBJECTIVE HIST RICAL PERSPECTIVE by: TOM COONS

Lakeside Coach & OVC historian

THE KENTUCKY DERBY leads the country as the longest continually-held sporting event in the country, celebrating its 144th year in 2018. The Ohio Valley Championship leads the country as the longest continually-held swimming event in the country, celebrating its 90th year in 2018. Two of Kentucky’s Hall of Fame facilities, hosting two of the longest-running sporting events in the country; it says a lot about the importance of tradition in sport in Louisville. The bottom of the “Lake” in the competition pool looks like quarried stone with some concrete patches and pipes bolted to the bottom. The swimmers worry about being able to climb out of the pool at the end of the race—especially relays, since the walls are two feet above the water line and have no gutter. The Lake is unique in its competition set up. They have been doing FINA turns here since the 1950s when the concrete piers were built. Every Lakeside coach has used the extra dryland of having to climb out of the pool after a hard set. There are hand holds built into the concrete that were what a swimmer used for the backstroke start prior to blocks being added, and are still there today. When you put your hand in the hand hold, it was full of water that was heated by the sun. It was gross. Until the 1990s, there were no lines on the bottom of the pool—not that you could see the lines, due to the algae that grew on them. As you swam, you had to use the visual of the lane lines to know if you were swimming straight. At OVC Finals, loud is loud—whether they are cheering for you or your competition. You hear the crowd and feel the 4

excitement. Although it’s a local meet held in early June, there is a deep desire to be an OVC Champion. It is where the swimming community has seen some of the most spirit from teams and swimmers—as well as an impressive list of meet records and names to go with them. To this writer and former swimmer, I can only hypothetically compare it to getting to play a professional baseball game at Wrigley Field: an old park with ivy on the outfield wall, in a neighborhood, possessing lots of history and no parking lots. Collegiate swimmers have always had a role in the history of the OVC. Once school was over, the OVC meet was one of the first major competitions of the long-course season. The meet offered a place where a swimmer having hopes of national and international recognition would test their mettle. In the early 1980s, visiting collegiate swimmers would stay with Lakeside host families who would house and feed them. I was lucky enough to have two future champions stay with me: South African Gary Brinkman (a four-time USA National Swimming Champion in the 400m freestyle in 1984 and in the 400, 800 and 1500m freestyle in 1986) and Venezuelan Giovanni Frigo (a 1984 Olympic Games finalist in the 100 and 200m backstroke). The OVC is a special meet in a special place. This neighborhood swimming hole that hosted a race 90 years ago has become a site where history is made. If this is your first OVC experience, welcome! You are now part of a decades-long tradition of excellence in our sport. L AKES ID E

GOING “PRO” LONG BEFORE MICHAEL ANDREWS THE LAKESIDE GIRLS’ TEAM WAS HISTORICALLY MUCH MORE RENOWNED AT A.A.U. COMPETITIONS IN THE EARLY DAYS. THE REASON? MANY OF THE TOP BOY SWIMMERS WERE ALSO LIFEGUARDS AT THE POOL, THE AAU DEEMED THEM “PROFESSIONAL” AND WERE THEREFORE NOT ALLOWED TO COMPETE IN AAU MEETS.

WHAT’S

NEXT

for

CAELEB? as seen in

Swimming World

FOR TWO YEARS the NCAA swimming community had already been enthralled with Caeleb Dressel. His sophomore and junior years at Florida, Dressel posted mind-numbing, internet- wrecking records at the SEC and NCAA championships: His 18.20 in the 50-yard free, his 40.46 and then 40.00 in the 100 free and, of course, his 17-second relay splits.

From an individual perspective, what did Dressel have left to prove in his final year of NCAA compeption? Barring some stunner, he was a virtual lock to score either 57 or 60 individual points—20 per win in the 50 and 100 free, plus 20 for a win or 17 for a runner-up finish behind Joseph Schooling in the 100 fly. All that said, even if the outcome of both the 50 and 100 free was still determined, the world still stood up and watched closely when Dressel dove in for both of those events because of the history on the line—could he break 18 seconds in the 50 and could he crack 40 in the 100? To that first question, the answer was a resounding yes. There was the 17.81 leading off Florida’s 4×50 free relay, and less than an hour after that, a 17.61 in the individual event. Both swims prompted standing ovations. As it turns out, neither Schooling nor anyone else could give Dressel any sort of challenge in the 100 fly, as he roared to a 42.80, seven tenths under his American record from last season and more than a second and a half ahead of anyone else in the field. 18

Finally, Dressel won his ninth and final individual NCAA title in the 100 free. Feeling the fatigue of a long meet, he finished only a tenth under his own American and NCAA record, but that was enough. His time was 39.90, under that vaunted 40-second barrier. At that point, the rest of the world saw Dressel as a talent, yes, but an unproven one in the only venue that matters past college swimming: long course. At the 2016 Olympics, he had provided a key leg for a Team USA triumph in the 4×100 free relay and then finished sixth in the 100-meter free final, but he was not a superstar at the level of NCAA Caeleb Dressel. Then came Budapest and the 2017 World Championships—the week where everything changed. On three separate nights, Dressel captivated with world by showing that he could sustain his monumental power over a 50-meter course. On the meet’s first night, Dressel led off the U.S. men’s 4×100 free relay in 47.26, instantly making him the seventh-fastest performer of all-time. Four days later, he backed it up and proved he could win one on his own, dominating the 100 free final in 47.17. And then two days after that, Dressel put together one of the finest days a swimmer has ever seen, winning three gold medals in the 50 free, 100 fly and mixed 4×100 free relay in one session, posting some of the fastest times in history in all three. He was locked in, the best male swimmer in the world, and L AKES ID E

everybody watching in Budapest and following the meet around the world knew it.

“Long course is where the big boys come out to play,” Dressel said. “We had a long course focus this whole year. I’m happy with the short course, but we’re still on track for some good long course swimming.” 2018

Does he maintain his upward trend in the sprint free and fly races and begin taking down world records? Can he add another event in which he’s elite in long course? What can he do in the 200 free to, at the very least, aid the only U.S. relay that did not win gold at the 2017 World Champs? We all will certainly have a chance to see on the international stage and in a 50-meter pool: this summer at the Pan Pacific Championships in Tokyo, in 2019 at the World Championships in Gwangju and, of course, at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. Dressel will have to prove all this in his professional career, beginning now. It’s time for Caeleb Dressel to empty the tank. “I feel like I’m just getting started in the sport.”

COMPETITORS: REMEMBER JUST HOW GOOD YOU ARE As we get ready for the 90th OVC, and another long course season, it’s a great time to reflect at just how good all the athletes entered in this historic meet are. Sure, I’m constantly reminding my swimmers that there is always room for improvement, but they also have to remember to consider the scope when looking at OVC records and NATIONAL rankings. There may be several swimmers ranked ahead of you, but there are THOUSANDS that are trailing you. As you work hard, make progress and improve your times, it’s amazing how many places you can improve nationally. Remember, we are competing at the top one or two percent, so small things you can do can make a really BIG difference.

A MESSAGE FROM MIKE DEBOOR

LISTEN. THINK. APPLY. Elite swimming is a unique sport – you compete as an individual, but it’s taught in a group setting. Just like in school, being able to really listen to your teacher or coach is an extremely valuable skill. This talent sets the foundation for learning, improving and succeeding. Make every turn, every practice and every race count. You are dedicating a tremendous amount of time and energy to become an elite athlete; make sure you’re not wasting this investment. Become a RACER. Swim to win YOUR heat and worry about THIS race. Becoming a better swimmer means becoming a better racer, and becoming a better racer is a great way to improve. Don’t be thinking about times or cuts when you’re on the blocks – just go as fast as you can go.

“Becoming a better swimmer means becoming a better racer, and becoming a better racer is a great way to improve.” As I reflect back and we move forward, I’d like to see us give more focus and energy to being a TEAM! I think everyone is proud of our program, but I don’t feel we are unified and moving together in the same direction. I don’t see us being “all for one and one for all,” and this support can lead us to outstanding results. The better your teammates perform, the more likely you are to raise your performance and vice versa. I wish swimmers and parents would realize this. I feel many think they are supportive, but I see it being limited to their own conditions: if they are doing well also or if they make the “A” relay, if they move groups, etc. Being a great team is an always thing. We are all great on our good days, but it’s the tough days when we must be great teammates and when we need our teammates the most. Being a great team also takes leadership. As a staff we discuss this often and I think the staff must improve and continue to find ways for the coaches to be sure we are leading correctly. We can hope that swimmers rise to leadership roles, but we must give them the tools and opportunities to do so. Therefore, creating a better TEAM is a team/joint effort. At every staff meeting we have a reminder on our outline: “FLY FIRST CLASS” – promote the team unity; encourage wearing team caps, t-shirts, jackets, etc.; build the team atmosphere; promote character and class as a lifestyle; develop the team that we are proud of. I pass that same reminder to our swimmers and hope that coaches and swimmers alike can better develop our program into TEAM! Finally, remember the life skills you take away from being a part of the Lakeside program are the most valuable return on this investment of time and effort. Your ability to be determined, to overcome adversity and to create and achieve goals is far more important than making a national cut or swimming on the “A” relay.

HIST RY by: Pat Forde

Early information for this timeline comes from “The Lakeside Story” by Jack Thompson

March 1, 1924: Lakeside is “born” in a certificate holders’ meeting that draws up bylaws for the neighborhood and lake. September 8, 1928: First major swim meet is held at Lakeside. According to the Courier-Journal story on the meet, more than 1,500 fans attend the “swimming carnival.” The meet featured 50-, 150-, and 300-yard swimming events for men and women in three different age groups, plus a “fancy diving” competition. Event winners are awarded watches and silver cups. 1938: AAU Men’s National Championships is held at Lakeside. Under Coach Bud Swain, Lakeside lays claim to the national championship in Senior Women’s swimming, based on results at the National/Olympic Trials meet in Portland, Ore., and another national meet the following week in New Jersey. Lakeside swimmers Mary Moorman and Ann Hardin make the U.S. Olympic team but the Helsinki Games are canceled due to World War II. (Lakeside’s male swimmers are powerful as well, but most were paid lifeguards at the same time and thus ineligible for AAU competition.) 1940s: Lakeside helps pioneer synchronized swimming, then known as “water ballet.” 1954: Reflecting its broadening regional appeal, the annual Lakeside Open meet is renamed the Ohio Valley Championships,

the moniker under which the meet continues today. It is the oldest annual meet in the country. 1963: Lakeside swimmer Alice Driscoll wins gold at the Pan American Games in Brazil in the 200 breastroke. 1972: Jack Tingley wins gold medals at the World University Games in Moscow in the 800-meter and 1,500-meter freestyle. 1975: Camille Wright wins three Pan Am gold medals, in the 100 & 200 butterfly and as a member of the U.S. 400 medley relay. 1976: Wright wins a silver medal as a member of the U.S. 400 medley relay at the Olympics in Montreal. Wright also competes in the 100 and 200 butterfly at the Games. July 7, 1979: At age 14, Lakeside’s Mary T. Meagher – who would come to be known as “Madame Butterfly” – sets the world record in the 200-meter butterfly at the Pan Am Games. April 11, 1980: Meagher sets the world record in the 100-meter

butterfly as well. After moving to the Cincinnati Marlins with Lakeside teammate Lisa Buese and Coach Dennis Pursely, Meagher was a heavy favorite to win multiple gold medals at the 1980 Olympics in Moscow before the United States boycotted the Games in protest of the Soviet Union’s invasion of Afghanistan.
