Bishop McCort High School has more than 35 clubs with a broad appeal, including honors, social, community service, fine arts, and athletics. In addition, we ask our students to complete a minimum of 34 hours of community service a year for church, school or community organizations.

Our comprehensive college and high school program features advanced placement and honors courses that can lead to 60 college credits at graduation. In addition to instruction in three languages,

Athletics and Arts: There are 20 available varsity sports programs to help the students to develop their full potential. The Bishop McCort athletic program is one of the most successful in the state. The football program has produced five professional football players. The hockey team, boys basketball and girls basketball teams have combined for 10 state championships. Our sports teams play in the new 7,500 -seat Johnstown Point Stadium.

The high school presents critically acclaimed performances in the newly renovated Guzzi Performing Arts Center. The teams will practice in the Bach Wellness Center beginning in the Spring of 2010.

I am pleased to present to you the 2010 spring media guide. This comprehensive guide highlights all the Bishop McCort athletic teams that compete in the spring season.

Our student-athletes and coaches have been working very hard to prepare for another exciting season. Our baseball and track teams have an outstanding reputation and tradition in the post season.

Our softball and freshman girls’ volleyball programs continue to improve each year.

I am very proud and thankful to our athletes and coaches for their commitment to our school. They are excellent representatives of Bishop McCort High School. Many of our student-athletes are members of the National Honor Society and perform many service hours in the local community.

Thank you to our alumni, business partners, friends and parents. We could not offer such an expansive extracurricular program without your support. Francis Zima Director of Athletics Following the accomplishments of our Fall and Winter sports teams, we look forward to continue that success with our spring sports. Baseball will be in pursuit of its second straight District VI Championship. The track teams will be looking to excel in the upcoming District and State meets. Our softball team will attempt to rebound from last year led by a core of dedicated seniors.

DENNY ALTIMORE EIGHTH SEASON

Denny Altimore, a Bishop Mccort graduate, enters his eighth season as the head baseball coach at Bishop McCort High School. Altimore has led the Crushers to a 8858 record over the past seven seasons and has advanced the team to three District Championship games. Last season, Altimore led the Crushers to the District VI Class “A” Championship in a thrilling 5-4 win over Homer Center. McCort advanced to the PIAA Class “A” Western Final last season before losing a heart-breaker to Serra Catholic 5-4.

Altimore has been involved with local baseball since 1954 serving as a player, coach, administrator, and manager. From 1999 to 2007, Denny served as the owner of the Johnstown Grays in the Johnstown AAABA League.

Denny is a retired businessman and lives with his two sons, Mike and Ryan, both Bishop McCort graduates.

DEAN GINDLESPERGER

ASSISTANT COACH

Dean Gindlesperger, enters his eighth season as an assistant baseball coach at Bishop McCort High School. Coach Gindlesperger serves as the team’s third base coach, as well as an assistant football coach at the school.

Dean, a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, played four seasons in the Johnstown Junior League and was invited to try outs with the Chicago Cubs, Detroit Tigers, and the Montreal Expos.

Dean is a partner with Allegheny Manufacturing and Electrical Service, Johnstown Electric Motor Service, and JEMS Fabrication. He and his wife Susan, a 1974 graduate of Bishop McCort have two sons, Ryan, Class of 2002 and Matthew, Class of 2005.

Ryan Gindlesperger, a 2002 graduate of Bishop McCort, enters his fourth season on the Crusher baseball staff as the first base coach.

Matt Kastelic batted .395 last season as the team’s everyday 2nd baseman.

Sean Lenhart went 5-2 on the mound last season with a team high 3 saves.

Lenhart’s 2.00 ERA was tops for starting Crusher pitchers in 2009.

#24—Gene Schultz Head Baseball Coach (1967—1993) Mr. Gene Schultz, the legendary baseball coach at Bishop McCort, roamed the third base coaching box for twenty-six years. During his time leading the Crushers, Coach Schultz accumulated 225 wins and earned the respect of countless young men that he worked with on a daily basis.

His #24 still hangs in the hallway of the school as a tribute to one of the all-time great coaches of Catholic High.

HEAD COACH

SECOND SEASON Brenda Merriman, a 2003 graduate of Bishop McCort High School, enters her second season as the Lady Crushers head softball coach. Merriman, a catcher and second baseman for McCort, was a four-year letter winner and captain of the Lady Crushers softball team. She also played on the girls basketball team.

Brenda graduated from Penn Highland Community College with a Business Management degree.

She is currently employed by Atlantic Broadband.

Kristy Reighard, enters her second season as an assistant coach with the Lady Crusher softball team. Reighard is a 2003 graduate of Johnstown High School, where she was a four-year captain and letter winner of the Lady Trojans softball team. Kristy was also a member of the basketball and soccer teams for Johnstown High.

Kristy graduated from the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Management. She is currently employed by Galliker’s as an Administrative Sales and Marketing Assistant.

he Bishop McCort Monogram Club is a new all-inclusive booster organization for alumni, parents, and fans to support BMHS Athletics. The Monogram Club is an expansion of the 12th Man Club that was created in 1983. This new organization allows alumni, parents, and fans to support all Bishop McCort High School athletic programs. Donations to the Monogram Club may be restricted to a specific sport, capital improvement project, or donated to the general athletic fund.
