An Incoming Freshman’s Guide to Bishop Gorman High School

July 2017

To the Freshman Class of 2021: On behalf of President John Kilduff and the entire faculty and staff of Bishop Gorman Catholic High School, I want to extend to you a very warm welcome to your home for the next four years! This is an exciting time in your life as you begin to discern who you are and who God is calling you to be. While each student at BGHS will find a unique path in college, career, and life, all Bishop Gorman graduates should be similar in certain respects. Defined by our Integral Student Outcomes (ISOs), it is our hope that you share these characteristics upon your graduation in May of 2021. I am sharing with you the ISOs and a brief comment on how they might apply to you as a freshman student. A Bishop Gorman graduate is an individual formed as a disciple of Jesus Christ who possesses attributes of the values shared by all GAELS, which are: Relationship with GOD–embraces and lives the Gospel of Jesus Christ as articulated by the Catholic Church, and discerns paths to serve God and others. Freshman Application: be open to the work of God in your life over the next four years and seek His will. Participate fully in Theology classes, the retreat program, and the Christian Service program. Acceptance of ACCOUNTABILITY–takes responsibility for acting in an ethical manner respectful of the truth while considering different perspectives in a global society. Freshman Application: know that you are responsible for your own actions; treat everyone with the utmost respect and dignity; seek the truth in your classes while learning how to speak and listen to those with whom you disagree. Commitment to EXCELLENCE–strives for exemplary performance; engages in lifelong learning; communicates effectively; and thinks critically, creatively, and collaboratively. Freshman Application: remember that your GPA for college admissions includes freshman courses; do your absolute best in the most challenging courses you can take and push yourself to grow. Cultivation of LEADERSHIP–serves as a positive, hardworking role model who promotes individual growth in others and the development of community relationships. Freshman Application: whether in a formal leadership position or not, demonstrate a solid work ethic and commitment to help others achieve their potential in classes, in clubs, and on teams. Practice of STEWARDSHIP–respects the dignity and diversity of all; utilizes unique gifts to serve others; and demonstrates the connection among faith, charity, and justice. Freshman Application: utilize your talents to help others in need at school, at home, and in the community; fully engage in the Christian Service program. We look forward to walking this four year journey with you under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. I look forward to seeing all of you in August, and again, welcome to Bishop Gorman!

Welcome to Bishop Gorman High School!

HAMMES CAMPUS STORE

I am looking forward to meeting each one of you in August. Before you know it, the Class of 2021 will begin a journey, and I hope you are all excited about learning the Gael Way. As such, I strongly suggest taking some time with your parents before the first day of school to become familiar with the standards and expectations that are outlined in the Bishop Gorman High School Parent/Student Handbook. This will help to limit any uncertainties you may have as you become proactive and successful Gaels. On that note, your first semester will be comprised of many meaningful spiritual, academic, personal, and social experiences. As your class Dean, I encourage you to seek out the answers you need from your academic counselors, LINK leaders, teachers, and administrators; they are enthusiastic about guiding you through your freshman year. In closing, please keep the following in mind as your summer winds down: 1. Finish all of your summer work BEFORE school begins. Pay careful attention to citing your sources appropriately. Our teachers are very diligent about checking and comparing submitted assignments, and we do not wish to begin the year with any violations of academic integrity. Summer assignments can be found on the Bishop Gorman PlusPortals website (www.plusportals.com/bishopgorman.org) 2. Become familiar with the school’s dress code rules and regulations (including hair, jewelry, and shoe standards) so that we will not need to send you home to correct any issues. 3. Finally, please mark your calendars for our MANDATORY Freshman Orientation days scheduled for August 10th and 11th. 4. Activate your PlusPortals account. As you embark on your journey, may you see a vision of what you can become and know that many people want to help you achieve it. Michael Wright Class of 2021 Dean
