from the South .
They have been gone all wint er .
We are glad to see them again .
Mr . and Mrs . Robin go South every winter . They com e North in spring .
It is easy for them to go where they wish and when they please .
They pay no car - fare .
They pack no tr unks .
They wear all the clothes they have .
Now they h ave com e t o stay a while with us .
They will build a new hom e at once .

Last fall all the little beech nuts left
their m other tree .
They were going to start out in life
for them selves
Their m other packed up a little box
of food for each one .
They did not eat it right away .
They all went to sleep .
They slept all winter .
That is their night , y ou know .
On e little nut waked up the oth e r
d ay .

He said , “ I shall take my stand right here .
So he put hi s feet down to the ground .
He began to eat the food ou t of his box .
He p u shed the box u p as high as he could re ach .
Then he threw it away .
The box was the shell , you see .
Wh en the box was gone , I could see what was left of hi s l u nch .
It looked m uch li ke the m eat of t h e n ut ; but a p art of it had
a pi nk color .
Pretty soon it began to u nfold .
I saw that it was two gree n l e ave s
So now this little nut has really started a hom e of his own .
He is near h i s m other
tree .
