SU GAR MAKING .
I went into a sugar cam p .
I saw the big m aple trees .
They had no leaves on them .
It was t oo early in the Spring for leaves .
The sap had just begun to r un i n
the trees .
Som e of the trees had Sp i les i n them .
Then b u ckets were set under the spiles .
The sap from the tree would drop , drop , into the buckets .
The sap i s called sugar water ; it is so sweet an d good .
By an d by a m an cam e to get the
sugar water.
He put it in a big kettle over a fire .
The water boiled for a long tim e .
You kn ow that when the water
drop s get hot , they fly away .
The s ugar cannot fly away .
It stays in the kettle .
So the wate r in the kettle got
thicke r and s weeter as it boiled .
After a while it was m aple syrup .
When the m an m akes m aple sugar , h e boil s the sap longer still .
Then he stirs it and puts it in little pans to cool .
You know how good it is then .
Is it not q u eer, that the old tree can

You or I could not do it .
