COLLEGE NEWS

FROM THE PRINCIPAL At the Annual General Meeting of the Bishop Druitt College Council on 31 May, Mr Bill Ward completed a remarkable tenure on Council. Mr Ward is one of BDC’s founding fathers. In the early 1990’s the then Headmaster of The Armidale School (where Mr Ward was a teacher) was looking for a school in the Coffs Harbour area that might act as a feeder school for TAS. Mr Ward was one of a number of people who looked for an appropriate site (twenty-two in fact), sought funding and the assent of the Bishop of the time, Bishop Bruce Schultz to pursue construction of a school in the North Boambee Valley. Almost twenty-five years later, he leaves Council, having seen BDC grow from its embryonic 57 students, one building campus to the school of 1114 students that is today. He was a member of the Property Committee for all of that time, so played an active part in all of the decisions to build the buildings we have.

Mr Bill Ward, Foundation Board Member

We are very indebted to Bill’s enormous contribution to BDC. We have been very lucky indeed to have had a man who was so dedicated to the BDC cause, who worked tirelessly to ensure our campus was the best it could be. Congratulations this week to: - Brianna Malouf (8) Ari Innes Evensen (8) and Matthew Rice (8) have been selected into the NSW Country talented athletes program for basketball - Sam Parker-Reynolds (11) was selected into the NSWCIS U18 touch football team - Jack Winchester (10) was selected in the NSW Country U16 Rugby team - Lucy Spain (9) was selected as a shadow player for the NSWCIS U15 Girls touch football team. - Max Kornhauser (11) has been invited by AFL NSW/ACT to umpire at the CHS Carnival in Albury in June. This is a big step on the pathway to future AFL umpiring. He will umpire Under 15’s at a State level and receive one-on-one umpire coaching in the evening. On another matter, I wish to remind you that second hand uniform is available at the St John’s Op Shop beside St John’s Anglican church on McLean St Coffs Harbour. Alan Ball Principal

Weakness is something that is recognized as a poor trait in today’s society, a feature of life, and personality that many see as an impediment to achievement and an encumbrance to success. We regularly hear motivational speakers whose interpretation of success is the elimination of all perceived human weaknesses, replaced by a ‘can do’ attitude. Weakness is a characteristic present in all human makeup in one form or another…for that’s what makes us human. The Apostle Paul recognizing his weaknesses quickly realized that they would be his shadow throughout his earthly journey and saw this as an opportunity for God to use him and his weaknesses in completeness, ‘warts and all’ to accomplish many good things. Throughout their journey in life many people have a hard time hearing that we are good and that God actually likes us despite our weaknesses and frailties. For many this is hard to accept. This might be because of the mistakes we have made or as a result of the experiences we have endured during our life journey. For many there is a constant message of our culture that says that we are not good enough, that we are lacking unless we achieve some moving, invisible goal or mighty achievement. When we acknowledge our innate weaknesses and face them, being honest about them, we open the door for God to be strong in the midst of our weakness. Everyone has a shadow of weakness. Writer Richard Rohr clarifies the difference between those who deal with them and those who don’t saying. “The general pattern in story and novel is that heroes learn and grow from encountering their shadow, whereas villains never do.” God made us,
in all our weaknesses,
frailties, & perfect imperfections. If we are the image of God, our strengths & weaknesses, Even our looks & gifts are of God. God values us.
God loves us as we were created. God dreams of a new earth with us. (Tim Graves -‘Liturgy Bits’)

SECONDARY SCHOOL

COLLEGE NEWS

FROM THE HEAD OF SECONDARY “In the midst of winter, I found that there was, within me, an invincible summer.” Albert Camus Winter has arrived and students will move into their winter uniform as of Tuesday 7th June. I hope all families have had the opportunity to locate jumpers, cardigans and blazers as needed. As always, we appreciate the support from families to ensure that students leave the house each morning dressed in uniform and looking wonderful.

WINTER UNIFORM COMMENCES FOR SECONDARY NEXT TUESDAY 7TH JUNE! The Human Rights Group has been very busy discussing the college uniform and presented their ideas to the uniform committee this week. They have made suggestions about ways we can make the uniform more gender inclusive to allow for students to have choice about shorts, long pants, long sleeve shirts and a few other changes. It has been very valuable to have the students’ perspective about the uniform. We will make adjustments to the uniform policy for the future and these changes will be published for students and families. Today at assembly we celebrated the achievements of a wonderful group of young writers. This group has worked with author Michael Davies to create stories and to work with him through the process involved to take an idea and develop into a published book. Carmel Spry Assistant Principal (Head of Secondary)

CONGRATULATIONS - TALLULAH REMOND-STEPHEN

AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL CHEMISTRY QUIZ

Tallulah has won a $2000 scholarship to participate in a semester or year-long exchange to France in 2017 with WEP. To win this prize Tallulah created a video in both French and English and impressed the judges with her creativity and enthusiasm. Congratulations Tallulah!

The Australian National Chemistry Quiz is scheduled to run during Week 1 of Term 3 (18th – 22nd July). This multiple-choice test is a nation wide examination that provides a useful benchmark for gauging the understanding a student has of chemistry. It provides a challenging opportunity and an insight into the relevance of chemistry in society.

Katherine Wyndham Head of Languages

If you would like your child (Year 7 -10) to participate in this quiz the cost is $6.00 and payment can be made via Trybooking at this link: https://www.trybooking.com/205901

YEAR 12 FUNDRAISING Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea was held last Thursday, and it’s safe to say it was a grand success, raising almost five hundred dollars for the Cancer Council (and feeding many hungry students, guests and staff!). The funds raised go towards vital research, prevention, and support service programs for cancer patients and their families. A massive thank you to everyone for their generous donations, and to everyone who helped bring in food or clean up afterwards. It was a wonderful morning for a very worthwhile cause. $496.55 was forwarded to the Cancer Council.

Payments MUST be made by Monday 6th June 2016. Unfortunately, no late entries can be accepted, as exam papers must be pre-ordered. NOTE: all senior chemistry students will be automatically enrolled and will be billed via account. Alison Hollier Science Teacher

The sausage sizzle held by Year 12 on Friday afternoon raised a total of $523, a fantastic effort from everyone involved. The funds raised will assist the purchasing of an Apple Mac Notebook for the first receiver of the Refugee Equity Scholarship, organised by the Year 12 cohort as well as helping fund the student house-building project in Cambodia that takes place at the end of the year. The event also helped raise money for the Marion Tanfield Magnolia Foundation in loving memory of Reverend Tanfield. Thank you to all who gave their time to supporting these causes. All competitors deserve congratulations for their effort and participation; they were a wonderful bunch to take away, never allowing adversity to worry them. Just before returning to BDC on Thursday, students were lucky enough to be given a guided tour of the State Parliament by local member for Oxley, The Hon Melinda Pavey, MP. The group embraced the opportunity to learn from the tour, asked intelligent questions and were most attentive when Ms Pavey and a channel nine journalist outlined the respective roles of press and politicians. We also got to sit in the legislative chamber where we role-played a question time. Thanks to Ms Paff for her time and effort preparing the students for this state decathlon.

VISUAL ARTS Year 8 students have completed a case study on Ben Quilty’s ‘Margaret Olley’ and William Dobell’s ‘Joshua Smith.’ Both artists are Australian Archibald Prize winners and the students were to compare the works writing similarities and differences in order to better understand how and why we analyse art. The art faculty commends all students on their efforts. We would like to share a part of the essay written by Sam Cawood: “Dobell and Quilty’s art works both try to tell a story. By comparing and contrasting the works the audience realises that while there are many differences the artists both intend to convey and capture the sitters life, experiences and personality.” Don’t forget also we are holding our annual Year 9 “Tales from Suburbia” exhibition in the gallery space on Tuesday 21st June at 6pm. Rebecca Brown and Natasha Foggiato Visual Arts Teachers

STUDENT BATHROOMS

We have been unfortunate to see the misuse of soap in students bathrooms so are not providing this at the moment. The soap has become a safety issue, so we will be using anti bacterial wash instead. As this is the ‘flu season this will hopefully help students to stay healthy. All students will be You may have been informed that the primary team has made it to the second round of the Paul Kelly Cup – AFL for those who reminded of the way to wash hands to make the wash most have never heard of it. GRIP LEADERSHIP AND PRIMARY FUNDRAISING Last Monday twenty-one Year 6 school and house leaders met at the Racecourse Function Room to attend the GRIP Leadership Conference. This event is run by a dynamic team of young people who all held leadership roles when they were in Primary or Secondary school. The GRIP team mixed lots of fun with the serious business of developing positive leadership skills. Here are some of the comments made by our Year 6 leaders. - It was fun because it was education and we learnt lots of stuff. We learnt a lot, had fun and didn’t get bored. Matisse

- One of the leaders was really funny. He was really confident and had awesome jokes that made the audience laugh. Isaiha

- I found it really interesting to learn. They had great ideas about how to sort out conflict and bullying. I feel like I could use these at school. Keira - I found it great because it taught you all about leadership. They were so confident on stage. They had fascinating ideas for activities that we could use at school. Rose

- It was a really fun day and my favourite activity was loud noises charades, I also think that the ‘Traffic Light Leadership’ would help me to become a good leader. Mia - At the GRIP LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE we learned so many great techniques about how to STOP BULLYING such as the TRAFFIC LIGHT and the TREE technique. At this conference we had heaps of FUN in the LOUD NOISES sections where we got to scream as loud as we could. Over all I had a FANTASTIC time and I have definitely GROWN AS A LEADER. Jorgia - It was also great seeing other leaders from other schools. Ellyse

Thank you to those students who attended the Fundraising Friday meeting this week. This event will be held at lunchtime on Friday 17 June. If you would like to find out more about organising a stall, please see Mrs Wood as soon as possible or come along to the meeting at lunchtime next Wednesday. So far some of the ideas include an origami stall, lucky dips, raffles, face painting and Lego building. We are hoping to raise lots of money to help support our World Vision sponsor children so get those thinking caps on and come up with a great idea! SPORT & OUTDOOR EDUCATION

COLLEGE NEWS

SPORT Sport Permission notes IMPORTANT We are introducing online permission through your Parent Lounge, tours and Excursions. There will be a limited number of paper notes now going home. If you have lost or forgotten you r username and password please contact Graham Coller on 66515644 ext 246 and he will be able to help you through the process. There are two excursions up in the lounge for football and rugby which you will have received an email about, please log in and give your child permission to attend these activities. Bill Turner Cup It was quite clear from the opening whistle that our 3rd round encounter against McAuley Catholic College of Grafton was going to be quite a physical battle. A bigger McAuley side adopted an aggressive approach in which our boys did not shy away from. We won free-kick after free-kick by getting in front & not panicking on the ball. This was demonstrated best by some of the younger brigade in Luke Neal, Charlie Alderman & Robbie Sullivan. A solid shot from Max Jones cannoned off the post for Zyggy Cobcroft to calmly slot home. A similar build up play down the right hand side saw Luke Neal tap in from close range. After moving the ball quite well, the opposition began to tire. This allowed James Lowe to score a brace, including a fine strike from outside the box that rippled the side netting. Zyggy put away our 5th goal, ensuring our place in the next round against Christian Community School. Bill Turner Trophy This Thursday the U15 girl’s football team played Woolgoolga High in the third round. As nature took its course the game was filled with air swings, dodgy throws and kangaroos. The final score was 3-0 to BDC with Chelsea scoring 2 and Regina 1 goal. This game was tough, but the girls played well and deserved the win. Congrats to the two new players Hannah and Shannon who played like they had always been part of the team. We look forward to the next round against McCauley Catholic College. Thank you to Mr Klipin for coaching us and Mrs Hilton for driving the bus. Number 5, Jana Rothacker Basketball As semester 1 basketball comes to the finals, I would like to wish all teams good luck and remember it is not always about winning. I have watched a lot of the teams in both Primary and Secondary this semester and the improvement shown by players is amazing. Thankyou to the coaches who have made this happen and also for giving up their time to coach the teams, thank you also to the managers of each of the teams, the work you so is very much appreciated. If you are already playing or if you would like to join a basketball team in semester 2 please email bhilton@bdc.nsw.edu.au to secure your place.

OUTDOOR EDUCATION Duke of Edinburgh Award Congratulations Kayla Bake and Zoe Pade on achieving their Bronze level Duke of Edinburgh Award. This is a great achievement the girls worked hard to gain this recognition. Any Secondary students interested in learning more about the Duke of Edinburgh Award please see Mrs Hilton. It would be great to get a group of students to complete a silver award and arrange a group adventurous journey. Year 1 Outdoor Education The Year 1 outdoor education program will take place on Wednesday 22 June on the College grounds. The Year 1 students with the assistance of Yr 10 peer support leaders will take part in a range of team building activities, including, setting up tents, and a series of games that require teamwork and communication. The morning will conclude with a picnic lunch at 12 noon, parents are welcome to join the children for the picnic lunch, but we ask that parents do not arrive until 12.
