COLLEGE NEWS

FROM THE PRINCIPAL Next week’s NAPLAN testing marks another milestone in the school year. Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will complete the tests, along with all students in the same year groups around the nation. NAPLAN testing offers a snapshot of a child’s performance at a given time in their educational development. For BDC, the results of the NAPLAN give us a good source of data upon which to focus our teaching in the future. For example, previous test results have motivated an across-school writing project aimed at improving student outcomes in writing. NAPLAN tests are an integral part of Australian schooling, so students should come prepared, and ready to do the best they can. I spoke to Year 9 girls after assembly this week about an opportunity for two girls to go to St Michael’s University School (SMUS) in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada next year. SMUS is a boarding and day school. I have visited SMUS on a couple of occasions. It is an outstanding school. SMUS made contact this week to see if we would like to offer an exchange next year. Two girls from SMUS would come to BDC in the second week of February, and go home at the end of March. Two girls from BDC would go to SMUS for six weeks either in April or October for six weeks. There is no language expectation (as there is with our sister school in Montreal). This is a wonderful opportunity. If we get interest from our Year 9 girls, I will issue application forms and hold interviews in June. If you are interested to know more about SMUS, visit www.smus.ca. Congratulations this week to: - Luke Malia (11) won silver in the 17yr boys 50m breaststroke at the NSWCIS swimming championships - Tayla Hall (7) won bronze in the 13yr girls 50m freestyle at the NSWCIS swimming championships - Sandon Carpenter (5) finished 3rd overall in C grade and Amelie Carpenter (2) finished first in the U10 girls at the MTBA NSW School Mountain Biking Series & Cup. - The Primary girls, U15 girls and U15 boys BDC touch football won their divisions at the NCIS Touch gala day this week - Bella Flynn in 5DJ for guessing the correct amount of cookies in the Cookie Monster Jar at the Monster Book Fair.

All of 5G is hungry for cookies!

Finally, I look forward to celebrating Mother’s Day with many of you at the breakfast next Thursday May 12 at 7am, in the Branson Centre. Alan Ball Principal

This coming Saturday friends at 10.00am family, friends and colleagues of Reverend Naomi Cooke will gather at Christ Church Cathedral in Grafton for her ordination to priesthood. Everyone is invited to this most special and sacred time that is another milestone in Reverend Naomi’s vocation serving in God’s kingdom. The word vocation comes from the Latin vocatio, meaning ‘calling’. In a Christian sense vocation refers to ‘God’s calling’ on someone’s life for a particular purpose. A vocation in ordained Christian ministry is more than a job; it is a call of selflessness in giving and sharing God’s love humbly with all humankind just as Jesus did. One dictionary refers to vocation as “a divine calling to a religious life.’’ It is a life where one is drawn deeply and intimately into communion with God through Christ. Writer and theologian Henri Nouwen says, “The spiritual life does not remove us from the world but leads us deeper into it.” In his Letter to the Colossians the Apostle Paul writes “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.” (Colossians 3: 23) In chapel time this term we are singing ‘Servant King’ by Graham Kendrick. The song tells the story of Christ’s earthly journey in a way that touches the soul quite deeply. The song concludes by reminding us that we are to learn how to serve, “each others needs to prefer”. Pray for Reverend Naomi as she continues to answer Jesus’ call to follow him, ‘loving and caring for others in her daily offering to God and humanity’. PRIMARY SCHOOL

COLLEGE NEWS

FROM THE HEAD OF PRIMARY Last Friday the whole of the Primary School competed in the Cross Country. Many thanks to the parents who turned up to cheer on their children. I was heartened to see that all children had a go, some walked while others raced competitively. There were some disappointments but also many children who congratulated their peers, not just for winning, but also for participating. This week has been busy with Mothers Day Stall and the Monster Book Fair and next week we also have some exciting events. I have been concerned of late when I have observed the Kiss and Ride procedure in the afternoons at our school. I would like to take this opportunity to remind parents of the key components of the smooth and efficient operation of our Kiss and Ride. Primary girls happy with their book fair purchases. 1) Student safety is our first priority 2) Drivers accessing the Kiss and Ride must remain within the vehicle and students must exit the vehicle via the left hand doors only 3) Vehicles should always move to the front of the queue prior to allowing students to enter or exit the vehicle 4) School bags should be on the seat next to the child, not in the boot of the car. I encourage you to follow these rules so that our children will continue to remain safe. Karin Lisle Assistant Principal (Head of Primary)

SECONDARY SCHOOL

COLLEGE NEWS

FROM THE HEAD OF SECONDARY Thank you to the parents of Year 8 and 9 students who attended the parent-student-teacher interviews on Wednesday evening. I hope it was a chance to talk about the great things that your son/daughter is involved with in classes and addresses some of the areas that may need attention. Communication between school and home is extremely important and while the interview time is very brief it is a chance to get an idea of what is happening. If any parents missed this opportunity or would like to follow up with teachers further, please email staff concerned. Through the secondary pastoral care program and with support from Craig Verbruggen (E-Learning Coordinator) and Mick Booth (IT Director) we talk to students about the way they engage with technology. It is important for parents to talk to their son/daughter about the way they think technology should be used. Often we can avoid these conversations as our children know more about technology than we do but the principles of treating ourselves and others with respect remain regardless of the communication tools we use. It is good to remind young people about the need to pause and think things through rather than reacting – once we ‘post’ or send information it is out of our control. I would recommend parents look at the website of the new government eSafety Commissioner (www.esafety.gov.au). There is information for parents and young people available as well as a portal for people who are concerned about incidents of cyberbully where they can seek support or make a report. Carmel Spry Assistant Principal (Head of Secondary)

VISUAL ARTS

Welcome back to Term 2! This week we are celebrating the work of the Year 9 Photography and Digital Media class and the Year 11 Visual Arts Found Objects Sculptures Unit. Both are currently on display in the Secondary Art Gallery, all are welcome to visit. Other visual arts students have been busy recently with the Year 11 Textiles Major Projects in the library. They had to represent a favourite book or movie in a simple dress or jacket. The works are fabulous. Rebecca Brown Visual Arts Teacher

ITALY AND GREECE TOUR 2017

Would you like to tour Italy and Greece in 2017?

Well, who wouldn’t! The tour is open to all students in Years 8-11 (2016), even as a cultural experience for those who are not studying or intending to study in these subject areas. An information evening will be held on Wednesday 11th May at 5.30pm at BDC in C1 and all interested students and parents are encouraged to attend. A representative from Academy Travel will explain all aspects of the tour and be on hand to answer all your questions. It would be very helpful if interested students/parents could email registering their intention to attend the Information Evening to bbennett@bdc.nsw.edu.au. Look forward to seeing you on Wednesday 11th May. Brett Bennett HSIE Ancient History Teacher

SPORT & OUTDOOR EDUCATION SECONDARY TOUCH FOOTBALL REPORT

PRIMARY TOUCH FOOTBALL REPORT

On Monday afternoon, four of our Bishop Druitt secondary teams travelled to Ballina to compete in the NCIS touch football tournament. On Tuesday, we played against independent schools from around the north coast. All of our teams fought through the hot conditions playing five to six matches. The 15’s boys came home with a trophy remaining undefeated throughout the entire tournament. The boys had lots of speed and great ball skills. The 15’s girls also brought home a trophy and were undefeated throughout the day. The girls had amazing defence, as they only let in one try throughout the whole day. Our open boys and open girls teams fought hard with great defence and attack but unfortunately both teams went down to Tweed Valley in a very close game, finishing runners up at the end of the day.

On Tuesday the 3rd of May the BDC boys and girls primary touch teams toured to Lismore and played in the North Coast Independent Schools Tournament.

Bishop Druitt College had amazing results and everyone should be proud of their efforts. On the day there was an opportunity for players to be selected to play in the representative NCIS team, in a carnival to be held in Sydney at the end of the month. Could everyone who participated on Tuesday please stand up. (PAUSE) A special congratulations to the following people who were selected to play for NCIS. From the 15’s boys we have - Kalani Morris and Zac Hart From the 15’s girls - Matilda Englert, Lucy Spain, Abbi Gaddes, Ellie Spain, Juliette Oliver, Zara Baldwin and Sarah O’Conner From the open’s boys - Sam Parker-Reynolds and Declan Ackers And the open’s girls - Grace Koster, Grace Farlow, Claire Spain and Courtney Smith. We would especially like to thank Miss Moore, Miss Bird, Mr Kelleher, Mrs Hilton, Mr Close and Mr Freeman for a successful and enjoyable trip. Thankyou! By Matilda Englert and Lucy Spain

The girls had a tough first game, playing Lindisfarne Anglican College. Lindisfarne scored in the first few minutes of the game. They had to work hard to make a come back. Soon, after excellent team work and a great pass they scored their first try of the day. Shortly after that followed another quick try. We ended the game winning 2 tries to 1. The girls played 5 games throughout the day and finished undefeated. They learnt a lot and made a huge improvements, really coming together as a team. Congratulations the primary girls touch team - NCIS champions! The BDC boys team played 6 games against teams from around the North Coast area. They also went through the day undefeated and came 2nd overall. Unfortunately, they drew 2 games and Emanualle College won all of their games and only drew 1. Alll the boys were lucky enough to have the opportunity to score a try and all worked really well as a team A big thankyou to Mrs Hilton for organising our trip and Mr Reedy for training us at lunchtime and to Mr Freeman for great coaching on the day and for coming away with us. By Ellyse Walker and Harry Ward

Congratulations to our touch football teams.

BILL TURNER CUP Our second round match was against local rivals St. John Paul College. After going down 4-0 in the same fixture last year, the boys were determined to make amends. A strong start brought about some early chances which we were not able to convert. But thanks to a great team effort we saw Ben Payne, Sol Fergusson and Luke Neal put the ball into SJPC’s net. SJPC’s speed up front was often thwarted by some smart defending by our backs and the final result, 5-1, showed a fantastic performance taking Bishop Druitt through to the 3rd round.

PRIMARY CROSS COUNTRY Last Friday was the perfect day to take on heartbreak hill for the primary cross country. Congratulations to all our winners and runners up. The winning house will be announced at next weeks assembly. Following is the list of our winners and runners up.
