Birth Roots Resource Guide The Belly to Baby Resource Guide represents a wide range of local resources available to you as you prepare for and experience the transformation of pregnancy, birth, and early parenting. Inclusion in the Belly to Baby Guide does not imply a Birth Roots endorsement. Birth Roots is a nonprofit community organization devoted to helping families access the resources they need to make decisions about options, approaches, philosophies, and models of care. Birth Roots recognizes the value and importance of access to diverse approaches, not all of which will be a good fit for every family or circumstance. We believe that this inclusive approach is essential to a thriving community.

About Birth Roots… Our Misson

Birth Roots provides non-clinical, community-based education and support throughout pregnancy and the first year of parenting through programs and events that build community, encourage instincts and intuition, address social and emotional needs, and promote a philosophy of “Community Supported Parenting.” We offer classes, groups, workshops, online gathering space, community events and resource referrals.

Our Community

Families involved in Birth Roots are often interested in meeting other new families and benefiting from diverse ideas and other ways of thinking about birth and early parenting. Our classes and groups facilitate the development of a vibrant community of families that embraces the belief that “one size does not fit all.” Instead we nurture individual approaches and encourage sharing of each others’ diverse experiences.

Our Philosophy

The work of Birth Roots is rooted in the philosophy that the way mothers, fathers, infants, and new families are treated at the time surrounding birth has effects that last far beyond that one day. Parents who feel respected and self-determined throughout pregnancy and birth tend to feel more confident in their ability to nurture their new child. Children born in an environment of confidence and awareness are more likely to thrive and be resilient.

— SPECIAL THANKS — We feel lucky to call many of the businesses and individuals in this guide our dear friends. We also feel so honored to connect with the families who participate in our programs. With deep gratitude we thank the families, individuals, and colleagues who have provided guidance, support, financial contributions, and so much more over the last nine years. Thank you.

At Birth Roots… We balance authenticity with inclusivity. We value introspection-based development over prescriptive methods. We encourage continued alumni engagement and involvement in the promotion of our vision and mission.

A wide range of support and services are available to you, from an experienced mom to an expert Lactation Consultant. Support can help with your baby’s latch and encouragement, as well as with the more complicated challenges of increasing milk supply, determining which medications are safe while nursing, and simplifying breastfeeding after returning to work.

w? did you kno While many Birth Roots families are interested in a "natural birth" and plan to breastfeed, these are by no means prerequisites or requirements. While our tendency is toward supporting connection, instincts and intuition (aka "oxytocin parenting"), our programs focus on helping you make sense of your experience so you can figure out what is right for your family. We do not prescribe a specific style or method of birthing or parenting.

Chiropractors A mother’s spine and pelvis undergo many changes and adaptations to compensate for a growing baby. Chiropractic care throughout pregnancy can improve nervous system function and spinal alignment to encourage greater health for mother and baby. Chiropractic techniques can help turn a breech or malpositioned baby, can ease common pediatric complaints such as colic and ear infections, and can provide general immune support.

I use gentle, safe, and proven techniques to relieve pregnancy and breastfeeding-related pain. As a Webster-Certified chiropractor, I work to relieve torsion in the pelvis which can contribute to complications during delivery and compromise optimum fetal positioning.

Things a newborn expects…

Very frequent feedings. A routine of every 2-3 hours eventually emerges but many babies cluster feed in the evenings or during growth spurts.

Classes& Groups: Prenatal & Childbirth Many of us do not have the benefit of seeing or participating in labor and birth until it is our turn. In generations past, seeing a mother, sister, or aunt give birth, and helping care for her and her baby after, gave women a template for what to expect. Fathers are relatively new to the “official” support team, and typically have even less exposure to birth before becoming a parent. Our classes bring families together to create a sense of community and inspire you to participate more fully in the decisions about your care during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.

www.ourbirthroots.org

The deeper the roots, the higher the reach.

Postpartum depression may appear to be the baby blues at first — but the signs and symptoms are more intense and longer lasting, eventually interfering with your ability to care for your baby and handle other daily tasks. Signs and symptoms of postpartum depression may include: • Loss of appetite • Insomnia • Intense irritability and anger • Overwhelming fatigue • Loss of interest in sex • Lack of joy in life • Feelings of shame, guilt or inadequacy • Severe mood swings • Difficulty bonding with the baby • Withdrawal from family and friends • Thoughts of harming yourself or the baby ~www.webmd.com

What you can do • Call your doctor or midwife and/or a mental health professional • Get out for walks, visits with friends or to groups like Blossoming Newborns, Social Butterflies or other support groups listed in the Postnatal Support section of the guide. • Get extra help around the house; friends, family or a postpartum doula • Eat well, consider Omega 3 and vitamin supplementation and any medications suggested by your care provider. Prescription medications aren’t always needed for mild depression but when they are, most are completely safe to take while nursing and are taken for a relatively short period of time to help you get back to a stable place where you can take over again. • Find a mental health provider or at least friend you can talk to who will check up on you regularly • Sleep is far more important than household chores or errands. Take naps when you can. Consider using ear plugs and an eye mask to help.

Doula | Labor & Birth The foundation of doula support is emotional, physical and informational support for a woman and her family before, during and just after childbirth. That is the book definition, but a doula’s work encompasses much more. The process of labor and birth is a complex collaboration of mind and body. A doula’s job is to influence the environment in which a family is birthing to keep birth on track and help them to express their unique needs and preferences. The following is one way a family might find and hire a doula: 1. Find a few names and contacts from the list below. 2. Call or email three or more doulas with your basic information to see if they are available for your due date and work where you are birthing. 3. Select at least two doulas and make appointments to meet face to face. 4. Select the doula that you and your birth partner are most comfortable. If you liked more than one, sometimes your second choice can be your backup doula if the two doulas have a working relationship. 5. Meet with your doula two or more times until you are both confident that there is an understanding of your preferences and expectations. Meet doulas and special guest speakers monthly at a free Doula Tea at Birth Roots hosted by Rebecca Goodwin. Call 318-8272 to register.

Doula | Postnatal Care & In-Home Support Each family has unique needs during the transition from birth to parenting. Most doulas work with families in the first three months after birth, but are available throughout the first year. Emotional support, tidying up the house, doing laundry, caring for a pet or for older children, and fixing meals are just a few examples of things a new family might need help with. Getting the help you need can mean the difference between just surviving and thriving as a new family.

Key Concept at Birth Roots Oxytocin: “Giving birth is an act of love, and each birth is unique to the mother and her baby. Yet we also share the same womanly physiology and the same exquisite orchestration of our birthing hormones. Our capacity for ecstasy in birth is also both unique and universal, a necessary blessing that is hard-wired into our bodies but that requires, especially in these times, that we each trust, honor, and protect the act of giving birth according to our own instincts and needs.” The Hormonal Blueprint of Labor by Sarah Buckley

Sleep Tip #2:

Swaddling is often recommended to sooth newborns but the receiving blankets usually used are far too small to adequately swaddle. 47” X 47” are the best size.

Massage Physical Therapy & Bodywork Massage and bodywork techniques can enhance your physical, emotional, spiritual, and mental wellbeing. Incorporating this kind of treatment into your pregnancy is more than a luxury; it can truly transform how you feel in both mind and body. You often don’t realize just how tense you are until you feel how relaxed you can be. Pregnancy and becoming a parent is a mind-body experience that invites the use of all kinds of care.

The Nest at Birth Roots

Key Concept at Birth Roots

Monday - Thursday 12:00-2:00

The Fourth Trimester: “…human babies need the first three months of life to give their brain and central nervous system the time needed to mature. In the course of those three months, an infant develops into a baby who is able to respond to the outside world. Breathing starts to regulate. She becomes able to lift her head, smile, coo, develop social interactions, and begin to soothe herself. This time between birth and the end of a baby's third month is a unique stage of life that many now refer to as the "fourth trimester."

Stop by for this informal drop-in group. Meet other new parents and babies 0-9 months old. Make connections, share things you are enjoying about parenting and find the solutions and support for the challenges.

Maternity & Prenatal Care Providers Most of the providers listed here offer well woman care throughout your reproductive life. When choosing who will care for you throughout your pregnancy and birth, it might be helpful to know that all of the providers listed here offer a similar, basic schedule of prenatal visits and tests for women experiencing a normal pregnancy. The differences are in where they attend births, specific skills, experience, special training, philosophies, prenatal visit routines, and birth routines. Schedule a visit or a phone conversation so you can get to know a few providers before you make your final decision. Some questions you might consider; 1. Does this person’s routine practices, personality and philosophy fit with my preferences for birth and put me at ease about how I would be cared for? 2. What is the likelihood that this person will be the one at my birth and am I comfortable with the back-up provider(s)/partners? 3. What is their schedule of prenatal visits and recommended tests? 4. How long do visits last and what is the normal routine for a prenatal visit? 5. Are there any special skills or knowledge this person has that I want or need that set them apart from other providers? Following is a brief description of the certifications and specialties you might see as you make your decisions about who will care for you and your baby. The experience, philosophy and experience of providers will provide.

Osteopathic Physicans Osteopathic Medicine is based upon a science of healing which acknowledges that human beings possess an innate capacity for self healing. If the Osteopath (DO) can remove the obstructions in the system, nature “will kindly do the rest”. DO’s are fully licensed physicians, who practice all branches of medicine and surgery. Osteopathic training includes the same basic medical school curriculum as MD schools, with an additional 500 hours of training in manual diagnosis and treatment. Cranial Osteopathy is a type of Osteopathic treatment that offers the physician a deeper understanding of, and ability to communicate with, the human being’s living physiology, as well as a broader range of therapeutic options. This approach offers a gentle, safe and effective way to address the full spectrum of healthcare issues that affect pregnant women, newborns, and infants. Even the “normal” processes of labor and delivery are stressful events for mothers and children. The Osteopath provides prenatal care for the expectant mother to address issues that include morning sickness, swelling of hands and feet, sinus congestion, back pain, and preparation of the pelvis to ease labor and delivery. Osteopaths also treat newborn for a wide range of issues including colic, poor suck/latching, irritability, sleeplessness, ear infections, and structural strains.

Interruptions solely for the sake of visiting can interfere with a new mom’s ability to tune into her newborns feeding cues, reduce hormones needed for milk production and her ability to sleep when the baby sleeps.

Things a newborn expects… Touch and connection. Some parents find that they fall in love with their baby over time and for others its love at first sight. Gentle massage, talking to your baby (they can’t answer but they can understand), bathing with your baby, singing and skin to skin contact are all ways to cultivate love hormones in yourself and your baby.

Birth Roots Definitions These are the definitions on which we create, run and build our programming at Birth Roots. Birth A sequence of physical, emotional, and developmental events causing an individual to become a parent and a fetus to become a newborn.

Flock

A group of parents that hold their connection and support network above assimilation and agreement about specific parenting practices or methods.

Oxytocin

A hormone in the body responsible for feelings of connection, bonding, love and community. It is inversely related to adrenaline, the fight or flight hormone. Birth Roots uses our understanding of this hormone to create a space and programming to enhance its production thus creating stronger bonds between parents and their children as well as community bonds that are the basis for “flock” formation.

Parenting Muscle

The practices whereby a parent is able to synthesize various points of view, ideas and suggestions and create a unique approach based on their values, needs and life context.

Perinatal

As the period from around conceptions to a child’s first birthday,

Perinatal Health

When the symbiotic relationship between babies and their parents is thriving, maturing, and activating potential intelligence in both. Birth roots recognizes that true tends to exists to the degree that families have uninhibited access to sufficient perinatal support and appropriate perinatal resources.

Perinatal Pleuralism

The belief that parents practicing varied, even contradictory methods or philosophies can coexist in a supportive relationship.

Perinatal Resource Center

A neutral space devoted to bringing parents, community partners and resources together to support families through the perinatal phase.
