DISCOVER DIGBETH Discover Digbeth Digbeth is fast-developing a reputation as the coolest place to be. In this post-industrial area just a short walk from the Bullring and Moor Street Station – contemporary art galleries, music venues, artists’ studios, street food, cafes, restaurants and even an independent cinema rub shoulders with small industrial businesses and university buildings. The result is an area that always feels vibrant, interesting and well, yes, maybe just a little gritty (and that’s why we like it). When in Digbeth, the first place to visit is the Custard Factory, now home to a thriving scene of independent shops and restaurants (try Baked in Brick for amazing pizza and Kanteen for lunches) and the Mockingbird Cinema, Digbeth’s only independent screen. Cross the road for Digbeth Dining Club, Birmingham’s famous centre for all things street food. As you walk down Heath Mill Lane, stop off at Eastside Projects, which was one of the first contemporary art venues to set up in Digbeth. Continue your art explorations in Minerva Works on Fazeley Street, home to no less than four galleries: Grand Union, Vivid Projects, Centrala and Stryx. Stop and take a breather on the bank of the Grand Union canal, or pop over to Dig Brew, Digbeth’s independent brewery and tap room for some cold refreshment. Over at Millennium Point, visit Birmingham’s science museum Thinktank, and just a little further is the new state-of-the-art concert hall at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. Pop into the vintage shops on Digbeth High Street and look out for STEAMhouse, the new creative space run by Birmingham City University. Finally, make your way up to the Bullring markets and pop into BOM for exhibitions, art and technology.

MUSIC FRIDAY

Big Bear Records present

Leaving Mississippi Birmingham Bound

MISSISSIPPI SEEDS

Friday 4, Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 October - 7.30pm The Mockingbird Cinema, Custard Factory, Gibb Street B9 4AA The Blues has been the root of popular music for the past 100 years. It was born in the Mississippi Delta out of the poverty of black enslaved Americans, and grew into the inspiring, influential music

featuring Chickenbone John & Harmonica Dave, Bob Wilson with Honeyboy Hickling and The Whiskey Brothers

that today is heard across the world. The links between the cotton fields of Mississippi and Birmingham are not immediately obvious, but they are there. The British Blues Boom of the 1960s gave birth to many fine blues bands, one of which developed into possibly the most influential of all rock bands, Birmingham’s Black Sabbath, who single-handedly created heavy metal. Leaving Mississippi Birmingham Bound traces the history of the blues from the cotton fields of Mississippi through Memphis, New Orleans and Chicago to rock and heavy metal, presented over

SATURDAY

three nights. The event is presented by Big Bear Records, who discovered Black Sabbath, took them to two hit albums and a hit single, and toured and recorded many American Bluesmen.

Friday 4 October - 6-9pm Matthew Evans, Carol Breen & Gemma Jones. Closing performance by formuls. Musician and sound artist Matthew Evans leads an improvised sonic performance. Carol Breen and Gemma Jones re-visit, re-perform & re-make present collaborative work that looks at the notion of repetition. Closing Friday evening is formuls, with a slowly evolving performance where you will experience new audio-visual environments emerging from previously heard material.

Saturday 5 October - 12-7pm Libby Cufley & Ambie Drew. Durational performance by Liz Ord 5-7pm. Plus Dan Auluk (offsite around Minerva Works and surrounding streets). Libby Cufley’s work focuses on the experience of a woman navigating Digbeth alone at night, with the selections made determining the outcome. Ambie Drew examines autonomous objects through an AV installation to explore how femmetopian items physically inhabit a space. Closing Saturday is Liz Ord’s durational performance The FOMO party // Rinse and repeat // Candid non Candid, an event that is always advertised but never happens.

Sunday 6 October - 1-5pm Dan Auluk (onsite), Rosa Francesca & Dinosaur Kilby Dan Auluk responds to a project developed off-site the previous day. Looking at me looking at you and not looking down, is the outcome of one to one interventions with the public in Digbeth. Rosa Francesca explores how love can be manufactured in Fall For Me, drawing from scientific research by Arthur Aron on the experimental generation of interpersonal closeness. Dinosaur Kilby presents an animalistic environment that people can climb into and inhabit as a base to watch video works buried deep within the belly of the beasts that roam within Vivid Projects.
