July 2011
President’s Message It is a great honor and a privilege to serve as this year’s President of the Birmingham Rose Society. I will endeavor in this, our 60th year to develop programs and events that will serve to further strengthen our society and will raise awareness on the cultivation of our National Floral Emblem. This month, we conclude our Summer Garden Tours with a visit to Brown’s Cut Flower Farm. Our very own Becky Henderson grows a very nice selection of flowers that are great companions in the rose garden. I am told her Dalia’s are in their glory! It will be an interesting tour and I hope you come out and join us. You’ll find the details and directions elsewhere in this newsletter.
Society. We each possess a unique level of knowledge and expertise about roses and I am so proud to be a part of an organization whose members are so willing to share what they know while also pursuing a “more excellent way” to cultivate and exhibit the rose. Our foray into social media (website, Facebook & Twitter) has taught me that there is a multitude of people, who not only love roses, but they are also eager for information on growing roses. We must stand ready willing and able to reach out online and in person. It is sure to be an exciting year, I hope you will get involved in our activities, share your love of roses and together we will continue building on the foundation set by those who came before us. I hope you will make an effort to attend our August Meeting. It is our annual “pot luck” meal and during the evening, we will install our new Officers and I will present a few ideas/initiatives for the coming year. As I have said before, I believe that we exist for two reasons; People & Roses. One without the other is not much of a Rose
