Bob would like to build me a bank of rain barrels alongside the house to go with the two I already have. Rain water is free and Jefferson County water is pricey. With four people in our house my water bill is about $100 a month, and the more water we use the higher the sewer rate. Watering my roses routinely with the hose is out of the question. As our property slopes downward from the street to the backyard, this means I carry water by the bucket uphill from the barrels to the plants.

You don't realize how much energy is required to move gallons of water uphill until you are doing it in 90 degree weather.

If you get the opportunity to use rain barrels, get the biggest spigots for the best water flow. Place your barrels as close as possible to the area to be watered. Think of the flow of water on your property. Keep the barrels at least high enough off the ground to put the buckets to be filled underneath the spigots. You can direct the overflow drain from the barrel to a 35 gallon trash can beside the barrel. It is quicker and easier to dip your bucket rather than drain it from the barrel.

Keep all water covered with screens or lids to keep out small critters and mosquitoes. Remember to water well and if you get to use your garden hose on you roses also remember you are blessed.

Consulting Rosarian Report

The months of September and October are hot and dry but this year we have been blessed with scattered showers. We have rain gauges in our rose beds so we can measure how much rain we get. It is so important in the fall to give your roses enough water. Roses need at least one inch of water a week to stay healthy. You also need to continue your spray program. The roses need this attention until they go dormant. Bob usually stops spraying the roses the first of November.

Our roses are full of buds and are just beginning to bloom again. I especially enjoy the fall roses with their vivid, brilliant colors. These blooms are often large because they develop more slowly than the spring flowers. You might consider entering your roses in one of the fall shows. On October 3, the Greater Gwinnett Rose Society will have a fall rose show in Buford, Georgia.

Now is a good time to survey and evaluate your garden. Do you need to “Shovel prune� a bush or two? Jim Mills is giving the program this month and he can tell us what is new and what is available to buy.

Meeting Minutes Rose Society Meeting Minutes

George Ann Hamilton – Recording Secretary Minutes of the Regular Meeting of the Birmingham Rose Society August 31, 2015 - 6:30 PM Sharon Bamberg, President, called the meeting to order. We had twenty-seven members in attendance. We introduced visitor Peggy Holly and welcomed new members Wanda Williams and JoAnn Morley. Our hostesses for the evening were Betty Bamberg, Sharon Bamberg and Jennifer Phillips. They were thanked for providing everyone with supper and desserts.

Jennifer Phillips has agreed to continue as Hospitality Chairperson but needs a Co-Chairman for this year. Brenda Bodine has agreed to continue as our Corresponding Secretary for this year. We will need someone to be in charge of our Christmas Program in December. The date and location will be announced later. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Sharon Bamberg.

Chris VanCleave was congratulated on becoming the Deep South District Membership Chairman. It was announced that Clayton Richard’s Mother-in-Law had passed away. A donation will be sent in her memory to the American Rose Society.

James Horton announced that our meetings for November, December, January and February would most likely be held in the education wing due to renovations to the Hodges Room and the Exhibition Hall.

Volunteers are needed to deadhead the Dunn Rose Garden. Please contact Sharon Bamberg to set a time and date. We all want beautiful roses for the second and third week in October. Bob Eskew reminded us what needs to be done in our own gardens for beautiful roses for our in house rose show in October.

The minutes from the July 27th meeting and the treasurer’s report stand approved as printed in the July Garden Faces.

Chris Van Cleave, Program Chairman, introduced our speaker Wendy Tilley, The Rose Gardner from Atlanta. She has 400 roses in her garden. Her husband Ryan takes care of 95 gardens in the area. With that many gardens to attend to her husband began to experience “Achy Bones”. She presented a slide program showing her garden and the many items you can order from her company The Rose Gardner to help keep our hands, knees and backs from hurting. For achy hands a hand surgeon designed her gloves. The pruners are light for ease in using. The kneepads were much better than foam. She had gift items also for sale. The program was fun and informative. Harold and Virna Settle provided the door prizes for the evening. The winners of roses were Pete Morley, Autumn Splendor and Martha Eskew who now has 401 roses in her garden. Winners of the Rain Lilies, Mayre Parr and Hyacinth Prince and winner of the Japanese maple was Charles Prince.

Our next meeting will be held on Monday September 21st. We are meeting one week earlier due to Antiques in the Garden set up on our regular meeting day. Jim Mills from K & M Roses will be our speaker.
