The very last day of term deserves the celebration feel that only our very own Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra can supply.

This is the perfect pre-party warm up or prelude to your evening concert. Hope to see you there!

The word supergroup is common currency, especially in the rock world. Jazz, of course, has its fair share of supergroups too. Sometimes, one supergroup comes along that really is very special indeed.

The Printmakers is such a group. The group formed at the instigation of Steve Mead at The Manchester Jazz Festival several years ago and since then has gone from strength to strength.

WHAT’S ON

Phase two of our Finals Festival, but this time this is Exit Velocity as we launch this year’s leavers into the professional jazz scene. We will miss them but hope to welcome them back in the future for headline gigs at the club. Again, everyone’s a band leader. Our senior students present their own small bands in our special Finals Festival to mark the end of term.

There will be a broad definition of jazz to enjoy that’ll include everything from free, be-bop and standards to contemporary arrangements. One ticket gets you in to the whole day so come and hear this new horizon on the jazz scene.

ere’s our short but intensely packed Eastside Jazz Club listings for the end of the academic year, which includes our usual array of top artists next to senior students as well as prize nights and competitions.

This month you’ll be able to hear Norma Winstone, Nikki Iles, and Chris Mapp, among others plus a special guest appearance from Fred T Baker and John Etheridge in duo.

Fred and Ethel as they are best known (!) are appearing as catalyst to a brand new prize for solo improvised guitar dedicated to the memory of British guitar legend Phil Miller, before they adjudicate for an exceptional line up of guitar talent from the jazz department.

But most importantly this is the season of Jazz Performance Finals from our third and fourth year students, gathered into the Velocity and Exit Velocity Festivals. It promises to be a great showcase of talent and is hugely impressive to see the level of transformation of these excellent musicians who have studied with us for an important part of their musical journey. Although bitter sweet to see the fourth years go, it’s always a great celebration of new jazz and the next generation of professional musicians. It’s a great ticket deal for each Velocity Fest day so do come down to give them a supporting vibe.

£12 (£10) Announcing a new prize for the Jazz Department. Phil Miller (1949-2017) was a progressive rock and jazz guitarist associated with bands such as In Cahoots, Soft Machine, National Health and Short Wave. Conservatoire guitar and bass tutor Fred Thelonious Baker was a fellow musician with Phil Miller for many years and has helped set up this prize in honour of Phil’s great musicianship and contribution to the scene. We thank the Miller family for the generous support of the prize and we are glad that this new annual feature in our calendar will keep the legacy of Phil’s playing alive.

After our End of Year Party with our very own Afro-Cuban Band, we’ll be taking a summer break, and look forward to welcoming you back in the autumn.

The prize is a solo guitar prize and the brief is wide open.

Our students entering the prize can offer any style from free jazz to rock to contemporary jazz and beyond. Our panel of Fred Baker and John Etheridge will hear each soloist in turn with you the audience and then award the best solo feature of the night. After the presentation of the award there will be encores from the winner and special features from FTB and John Etheridge. This promises to be a great night out and a fitting tribute to a British guitar legend.

Inspired by the ethos of Punkt Festival (Norway), this new project draws on the festival’s fundamental principles of improvisation, remixing and the use of electronic instruments in live performance.

Chris’s trio Stillefelt, with Percy Pursglove and Thomas Seminar Ford, will play the second set. Stillefelt is a new project created to explore the development of composition, improvisation and electronics. A new album is scheduled for release on Stoney Lane Records in the Autumn.

JAZZ COMPOSITION AND ARRANGING PRIZE 7.45pm £10 (£8) Jazz department composers compete for this year’s composition arranging prize with Royal Birmingham Conservatoire Jazz Orchestra directed by this year’s Large Ensemble Directors from BMus Jazz 3 and 4.
