Hello In a city recognised for its architectural transformations, City of Sounds is an invitation to remember, to celebrate and to look to the future of Birmingham’s rich music scene. You can’t fail to notice the redevelopment underway in the Paradise area of Birmingham City Centre, as part of which Birmingham Conservatoire loses its Adrian Boult Hall ahead of its move to a brand new venue in 2017. The hall has been a musical home to many world class musicians and Conservatoire students that have passed through its doors. It has also fulfilled a central role in the cultural fabric of Birmingham as a performance, rehearsal and recording space for a wealth of professional, semiprofessional, community and young musicians and arts organisations. With City of Sounds we tell the stories and history of this dual role and say goodbye to the much-loved hall, as we look ahead to an exciting future. During the Festival you will find performances and events from Birmingham Contemporary Music Group (20 May), Ex Cathedra (26 May), City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (4 June), Jazzlines (10 June) and Birmingham Philharmonic Orchestra (11 June). We are joined by ‘the man with the golden flute’ Sir James Galway and his wife Lady Jeanne Galway (1 May), ELO and Annie Lennox’s musical director Mike Stevens (3 June), Birmingham’s favourite mega-folk misfits The Destroyers (19 June), the elite of the brass band world Tredegar Town Band (22 June) and jazz bass legend Dave Holland (24 June). Representing the best of the regions young musical talent, there are performances by Birmingham Music Service ensembles (8 & 14 May), talented young musicians from the Aspire programme (11 June) and Junior Conservatoire choirs and orchestras (25 June).

There are also concerts by our senior students and ensembles including BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year finalist Elliott Sansom (10 May), the award winning Chamber Choir directed by Paul Spicer (17 June) and the touring Folk Ensemble directed by Joe Broughton (19 June). City of Sounds will close with Requiem for a Concert Hall - a performance of Verdi’s Requiem by our critically acclaimed Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Sir Richard Armstrong which will be broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 (26 June). The up-coming generation, the current generation and the leaders of the city’s musical offering are represented. We invite you to delve into the stories and connections of these artists and organisations with Birmingham Conservatoire that make this celebration of Birmingham’s music scene so unique. City of Sounds is a one-of-a-kind event in Birmingham’s history, paving the way for the sounds of a future yet to unfold. With everything from classical and jazz to new music and folk, enjoy a summer of music making at its most collaborative, and a demonstration of Birmingham as the true City of Sounds. We look forward to welcoming you.

The Music Service here presents their two final celebratory gala concerts on a stage that has provided a platform for many of Birmingham’s young musicians over the last 30 years. TWO TRIOS FEATURING THE ELLIOTT SANSOM TRIO AND THE BIRMINGHAM CONSERVATOIRE TRIO’S DEBUT PERFORMANCE 7pm Recital Hall Free event Tickets should be booked in advance from www.eventbrite.co.uk The new Birmingham Conservatoire will be home to Birmingham’s only dedicated jazz venue, and talent like pianist Elliott Sansom help to demonstrate why this is long overdue. Shortlisted for this year's BBC Young Jazz Musician competition, Elliott is a great success story for the jazz scene in Birmingham, coming through from school in Dorridge to the Midland Youth Jazz Orchestra, via the Birmingham Junior Conservatoire, to being a leading student on Birmingham Conservatoire’s jazz course. He is hotly tipped as one to watch and expected to start playing a major part on the professional music scene soon. In this hour long concert, Elliott presents a set with his trio - with Ben Muirhead on double bass and Billy Weir on drums - drawing on Elliott’s exploration of the harmonic and rhythmic language shared in both jazz and classical music. Alongside them, and in contrast, The Birmingham Conservatoire trio featuring Jiafeng Chen (violin), Jiaxin Lloyd Webber (cello) and Di Xiao (piano), present their debut concert with music by Bach, Debussy, Paganini and Mendelssohn.

Originally formed by players from within the CBSO, Birmingham Contemporary Music Group (BCMG) is now established as one of Europe’s leading ensembles with a reputation for brilliant performances, ambitious commissions and innovative collaborations. Before moving to the CSBO Centre in 1998, the Adrian Boult Hall was BCMG’s home for 11 years with the majority of the group’s concerts presented there during that time. Inviting BCMG back to present a final concert in the hall for City of Sounds therefore represents a special festival highlight.

BCMG's founder Ulrich Heinen commissioned Six Figures from Howard Skempton, both of whom are also tutors at the Conservatoire. Composer Charlotte Bray is a Conservatoire graduate and Honorary Member. BCMG pianist Malcolm Wilson, who will also play the celeste in Feldman's Rothko Chapel is the Conservatoire's former Head of Piano. The title piece for the concert, Jolas’ Music to Go, is a hauntingly beautiful and longing memorial, and is a Howard Skempton favourite. Joining BCMG for the final two pieces, Via Nova is a chamber choir specialising in contemporary music repertoire. Their work with BCMG demonstrates another wonderful collaboration - Via Nova is managed and directed by two Conservatoire graduates and formed of Conservatoire student and graduate vocalists.

MOZART'S CORONATION MASS WITH BIRMINGHAM FESTIVAL CHORAL SOCIETY AND QUEEN'S PARK SINFONIA 8pm Adrian Boult Hall £12, £10, £3 - BCU Students Tickets available from www.thsh.co.uk Conductor Patrick Larle Soloists Elouise Waterhouse Alistair Donoghue Rob Tilson Lucinda Scott Mozart Ave Verum Corpus Mozart Coronation Mass, K317 Birmingham Festival Choral Society, Birmingham's longest established SATB Chorus, was formed in 1843 to provide the Chorus for Birmingham's Triennial Musical Festivals. The Society provided the majority of the chorus not only for the première of Mendelssohn's Elijah at the 1846 Festival, but also all future Musical Festivals. The Society, one of whose former conductors was Adrian Boult himself, have performed regularly in the Adrian Boult Hall since it opened thirty years ago. For City of Sounds they celebrate the hall with a piece of music that itself is celebratory in its very nature, Mozart’s ever-popular Coronation Mass.

Joining the Society are Queen’s Park Sinfonia, one of the new generation of exciting chamber orchestras in the UK. The Ensemble offer talented young graduate musicians in the West Midland’s region, including many from the Conservatoire itself, the opportunity to develop in a professional environment and perform in prestigious venues with acclaimed choirs and soloists. Formed in 2002 by a Birmingham Conservatoire graduate, City of Sounds is delighted to welcome back the ensemble whose performances always prove to be satisfying to audiences and musicians alike. Also joining the Society as soloists are four talented current students. This involvement of our students represents one of the many opportunities for talent development and professional advancement that our students forge for themselves with musical organisations across the region and UK. 8.30pm Adrian Boult Hall Free event Tickets should be booked in advance from www.bcu.ac.uk/citytalks

How shall we sing the Lord's song in a strange land? This well-known verse from Psalm 137, the hymn of captivity and longing for homeland and religious freedom, gives this programme its title and its theme. In a Strange Land explores man’s search for heaven and earth in the Old and the New World in the world-changing turmoil of the 16th and 17th-century. There is music of religious conflict and of exploration from England, France, Holland, Spain - and from Mexico and Bolivia, the world of the Aztecs and Incas. The programme includes William Byrd’s exquisite Mass for Four Voices alongside gems by Gesualdo, Lobo, Tallis and Victoria, the lilting syncopation of Juan Gutierrez de Padilla’s Missa ego flos campi, and rhythmically-arresting music from the Latin American Baroque, full of wonderful indigenous imagery. A complete programme is available at www.bcu.ac.uk/city-of-sounds.

Ex Cathedra has received rapturous acclaim for its performances and recordings of Baroque music from Latin America, unearthed by artistic director Jeffrey Skidmore - also Artistic Director of Early Music at the Conservatoire. This concert is a wonderful opportunity to hear Ex Cathedra perform this music in its home city of Birmingham for the first time in several years. Founded in 1969 by Jeffrey Skidmore, Ex Cathedra is a leading UK choir and Early Music ensemble and an Associate Artist at Birmingham Town Hall. They are celebrated for seeking out the best, the unfamiliar and the unexpected in the choral repertoire while delivering performances of authority, style and passion, all of which promises to be exemplified in this concert for City of Sounds. The Conservatoire’s journey to new venues in Eastside may not take us quite so far afield, but it is a journey of discovery that promises to be equally exciting.

Musical Director and musician for Take That, Mike Stevens returns to his alma mater – Birmingham Conservatoire. Since graduating from the then Birmingham School of Music in 1979, Mike has enjoyed a successful career in the music industry, including a solo career as a saxophonist. He is best known as Take That’s musical director, who he has worked and toured with from 1992 , playing keyboards, guitar and saxophone, as well as backing vocals. Mike was literally ‘Back For Good’ in 2006, when the group asked him back as musical director following their reunion. He is also a Grammy nominated producer, known particularly for his work with Annie Lennox over the past decade. Mike’s work with Take That made him an in-demand musical director and subsequently led him to direct with artists such as Will Young, Sugababes, Eurythmics, Mika, Geri Halliwell as well as being a touring member of 10cc. He has directed many big charity events such as BBC 'Children in Need Rocks' 2009-2013 where he directed the house band, as well as Nelson Mandela's 46664 Concerts in South Africa. In 2012 Mike was hired as musical director for the Diamond Jubilee Concert at Buckingham Palace, and two years later directed Jeff Lynne's ELO at BBC Radio 2's Hyde Park Festival. This led to him becoming musical director of the newly re-formed 'Jeff Lynne's ELO' which has included performances at The Grammys and Hollywood Bowl. In conversation with Julian Lloyd Webber, they will both share experiences from their careers in the music industry while Mike reflects on his journey from music student, to touring with one of the UK’s biggest bands. Following this, Mike will be presented with an Honorary Fellowship from Birmingham City University.

Looking to the Future: The New Birmingham Conservatoire

CELEBRATING THE PAST: The Story of the Adrian Boult Hall

From the summer of 2017, Birmingham Conservatoire will be in its new state-of-theart building, the first purpose-built music college in the UK for a generation. Birmingham Conservatoire is acknowledged as one of the world's most forward thinking music colleges and the new Conservatoire's facilities will be unrivalled by any other music institution. It will provide a 21st-century home in which the Conservatoire can continue its long tradition of developing top class musical talent.

The new Conservatoire will be situated in Eastside, in the heart of the City's learning quarter, which is already home to Birmingham City University's City Centre Campus, the ThinkTank Museum, and the Birmingham Ormiston Academy. Designed by the award-winning architects Fielden Clegg Bradley Studios (FCB) – who have worked on projects such as the Queen Elizabeth Hall at the South Bank Centre, the Victorian Theatre at Alexandra Palace and Brighton Dome - it will be the first Conservatoire of a digital age with unrivalled performance space and acoustical quality.

The new Conservatoire will include: In 1963 Gordon Clinton, the 6th Birmingham School of Music (BSM) Principal, wrote a paper entitled “Observations on the future of the School of Music”, which included his thoughts on the creation of a Concert Studio. Nothing happened immediately and over the next fifteen years changing political and economic climates saw support for a concert space shelved and renewed at various points.

• A 450-seat concert hall with flexible acoustics and facilities suitable for everything from soloists to symphony orchestra

The need for a performance space was revived in 1977 by Louis Carus, the newly appointed Head of School. After years of discussion Mr Carus wrote that a development had been proposed which included a purpose-built Concert Studio for BSM with tiered auditorium and gallery to seat over 500.

• An intimate jazz venue

This will be a people's Conservatoire. Alongside concerts by our students and ensembles, from 2017 we look forward to continuing our long tradition of partnership working with music and arts organisations from across Birmingham and the UK, and presenting the best musicians from across the world.

• A flexible 'black-box' studio for experimental music and collaborative performances across arts genres

We also look forward to welcoming the people of Birmingham to experience the wonders of a concert experience in our new venues.

Work on the new development eventually began on 22 July, 1983, 23 years after the idea was first floated, and 100 years after the establishment of BSM. The official opening concert of the Adrian Boult Hall took place on 20 February, 1986, attended by the Duchess of Gloucester who unveiled a plaque to commemorate the first phase of the Paradise Circus scheme. After 20 years’ service, the Adrian Boult Hall was refurbished in 2006, which included the installation of new seating, acoustic curtains, house and stage lights. To celebrate the Anniversary, a Concert was given by the Conservatoire Symphony Orchestra on Friday 10 November, 2006.

• A 150-seat recital hall

• An organ performance studio • Enhanced teaching and practice resources, including 100 practice rooms • State-of-the-art recording studios

Since its opening in 1986, the hall has operated as an essential performance venue for a wide range of student concerts, performance classes, recordings and masterclasses. It's stage has been graced by alumni including soul singer-songwriter Laura Mvula, baritone Rhydian Roberts and conductor Michael Seal. It has also established itself as a vital performance, rehearsal and recording space for a wealth of community musicians and arts organisations from across Birmingham and the UK. Often described as one of the best concert halls of its size in the country, it has welcomed diverse performances from well known names such as violinists Nigel Kennedy and Tasmin Little, singer Dame Felicity Lott and composer Pierre Boulez. It has also hosted events across the wider arts and has seen artists such as actor Sadie McGovern and writers Michael Morpurgo and Jacqueline Wilson take to it's stage, while being used to film for programmes such as Comic Relief with Miranda Hobbs and Spice Girl Mel B, and for The Naked Choir with Gareth Malone. With City of Sounds we celebrate the hall and say our goodbyes, while looking to the future with excitement…

A unique stage show that combines madcap energy, stage theatrics and immense musical craftsmanship and ingenuity, it's no surprise that they win over audiences wherever they perform. With the majority of the band having studied at Birmingham Conservatoire, it is a huge treat to welcome them back to the venue where they once performed as bright-eyed students, for one of their few Birmingham shows this year. The Destroyer's partners in crime for this fantastic double-header send-off for the Adrian Boult Hall are the inimitable Conservatoire Folk Ensemble led by Joe Broughton (Urban Folk Quartet, Albion Band, Joss Stone).

Long before the current trend of big folk band line-ups and folk fusions, The Folk Ensemble were drawing on influences of funk, classical, ska, reggae, jazz and hip-hop to create a 49 piece funky orchestra second to none. The Conservatoire Folk Ensemble is forever changing, always unique and has an energy & power that is unrivalled; it has to be seen to be believed.

ELEGY FOR A CONCERT HALL FEATURING JUNIOR CONSERVATOIRE CHOIRS AND ORCHESTRAS 7pm Adrian Boult Hall £12, £10, £3 - BCU students Tickets available from www.thsh.co.uk Conductor Daniele Rosina Conductor Jeffrey Snowdon Conductor Timothy English

The Junior Conservatoire Symphony Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble and Vocal Ensemble will now join forces for its première to offer a unified goodbye to the hall.

Howells Elegy for Viola, String Quartet and String Orchestra Bernstein Overture to Candide Percy Pursglove A Glance to the Sky to Count the Stars

As a precursor, the Junior orchestras present Bernstein's ever-popular Candide Overture and Howells's celebrated Elegy. There was a special connection between Howells and Sir Adrian, who championed many of his early orchestral works including the Elegy, which he later recorded with the New Philharmonia in the 1970s.

The Adrian Boult Hall's penultimate concert will be celebrated in style by the Birmingham Junior Conservatoire. Conservatoire composer and jazz trumpeter Percy Pursglove (who was seen earlier in the festival performing with the Julian Arguelles', Tetra) was specially commissioned 12 months ago to write a piece that would see several Junior Conservatoire ensembles take to the stage together.

PRE CONCERT TALK with Barry Wordsworth and Christopher Morley

Maya Verlaak Carrier Verdi Messa di Requiem

Add more to your evening - prior to the concert Christopher Morley (Birmingham Post) talks to renowned conductor Barry Wordsworth on his time studying with Sir Adrian Boult. Rarely seen archive footage of Sir Adrian will accompany the interview.

Verdi’s monumental work is a fitting tribute for this much loved concert hall. Of operatic proportions, this great piece is full of drama, lyricism and Italian spirit. With the Conservatoire's premier orchestra and chorus under the baton of one of the UK's leading Verdian conductors, this special final concert and BBC Radio 3 live broadcast promises to deliver a celebration of the magnitude that the Adrian Boult Hall deserves and a compelling nod to the Conservatoire's exciting future.

6pm Arena Foyer Free event Tickets available on the door

Following this concert Sir Richard Armstrong will be presented with an Honorary Doctorate by Birmingham City University.
