Lady Windermere's Fan by Oscar Wilde
Director - Alex Taylor
Lady Windermere has a happy marriage – or does she? Her friend tells her of a suspected affair between her husband and a woman of questionable reputation. Is this just gossip or is there evidence to support it? On the day of her 21st birthday, as she comes of age, Lady Windermere has to decide whether to allow her husband’s potential lover to attend her ball. In the meantime, what will Lady Windermere do about the declarations of love from her friend Lord Darlington? Should she trust her husband or will she risk everything by running away with her would-be lover?
Wilde’s first ‘Society Comedy’, filled with his famous epigrams and witty rejoinders, explores the destructiveness of gossip and examines the ambiguous sexual morality and gender politics at the heart of the British ruling class, and asks the question, ‘What is a good woman?’
