The City Hall lobby remains accessible to the public through the Martin Street entrance on the north side of City Hall during regular business hours, Monday Friday from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p m Main floor services including the Clerk’s and Treasurer's offices are accessible. Necessary in person meetings between City Hall employees and the public take place at a designated location on the main floor of City Hall. Social distancing of six feet should be maintained during all in person meetings. The Police Department lobby entrance on the east side of City Hall on Pierce Street continues to operate as the point of contact for all off hour requests

The City continues to recommend the public wear masks while attending City meetings. All City employees, commissioners, and board members must wear a mask during meetings because adequate ventilation cannot be maintained. This is to ensure the continuity of government is not affected by an exposure to COVID 19 that can be prevented by wearing a mask. The City continues to provide KN 95 respirators and triple-layered masks for all in-person meeting attendees.

We are in the home stretch on the Adams Park project! The park is closed but nearing completion and looking more beautiful each day The fence will remain around the park for the next two four weeks due to fresh sod throughout the park. Staying off the sod will help ensure a healthy, durable lawn upon completion of the park renovation project. The grass roots of the lawn bond to the soil during the first weeks of growth, so protection of the lawn during this period is extremely important. Because the lawn requires a lot of water at first, the soil will retain a consistent level of moisture. This softer soil allows for exaggerated footprints and divots to be created by park users and service equipment. When the soil hardens back up, these divots create trip and safety hazards for park users This can be avoided by staying off the lawn while it is established. SOUTH OLD WOODWARD RECONSTRUCTION PROJECT
Progress continues on the South Old Woodward Avenue Reconstruction project! The new storm and combined sewers have been installed. The contractor will continue to finish some minor property connections south of Frank Street on the west side of South Old Woodward Avenue. Those within the project area should contact the city if your water or sewer services appear to not be connected, so we may inspect the connections. Concrete for the northbound lane between the southern end of the project zone and the northern edge of the Hazel Street intersection have been installed. All utility connections along the east side of the project site have been completed The contractor has started the placement of planter boxes and sidewalk concrete work should begin soon. Over the next month, the contractor will look to grade and install more of the mainline road. We are excited with how far the project has progressed!
Southbound traffic through the work zone starting at Hazel Street has been shifted onto the new concrete along the east side of South Old Woodward Avenue. Access to surface lots along the work zone between Hazel and George Streets will be maintained with maintenance aggregate (gravel pathway). Businesses south of George Street should be accessed from Lincoln Street or George Street through the alley west of South Old Woodward Avenue.

The City of Birmingham invites the community to an Underground Railroad Commemoration Ceremony on Saturday, September 17 at Quarton Lake Park, located at the corner of Oak and Lakeside, one block from Greenwood Cemetery The event will begin with a brief ceremony at 11:00 a.m. followed by a tour of the gravesites. On Monday, August 29, 2022, city officials and staff members dedicated a City bench to Tim Currier and honored him for his distinguished 30 year career as City Attorney for the City of Birmingham. Mr. Currier was recognized for his professional legal skills, leadership and dedication to the City and its citizens. A special thank you to private contributors who generously funded the bench, which overlooks Shain Park and will benefit the community for many years to come. 2022

BENCH DEDICATION HONORS FORMER CITY ATTORNEY, TIM CURRIER
John W. Rutherford will receive the 2022 Birmingham Bloomfield Cultural Arts Award ‘for nurturing artistic voices.’ Rutherford enjoys an extraordinarily loyal following of generations of parents, students, and members of the community He is a teacher/director at Birmingham Groves High School, the artistic/educational director of Village Youth Theatre and uses his own funds to run the independent “Barebones Theatre Productions" company. During the pandemic, Rutherford used digital rehearsals and performances, virtual competition platforms, produced plays written by professional playwrights with adult actors, created a Zoom playwriting/acting workshop that helped develop original scripts for production, and found ways to entertain community audiences with socially distanced and outdoor theatre opportunities. His efforts to help all people find their voice through speech and theatre are renowned in our community as acknowledged by his receiving numerous state level awards such as the GUVVY Arts Educator Award as well as his induction into both the Michigan Educational Theatre Association Hall of Fame and the Michigan Speech Coaches, Inc Hall of Fame.

The Village Players, which is celebrating its centennial in Birmingham this year will receive the Partners with the Arts Award for ‘One hundred years of vibrant community theatre’. The award is given directly by the Cultural Council to honor a business, non profit or organization in our community that supports the arts in a distinguished manner.
ANNOUNCING THE 2022 BIRMINGHAM BLOOMFIELD CULTURAL ARTS AWARD HONOREES
Howard Hertz, an entertainment lawyer whose client list reads like a ‘Who’s Who’ in celebrity America, will receive a Special Lifetime Achievement Award as a ‘champion for artistic freedom’, honoring the huge impact his volunteer work has had in Michigan and beyond. As a long standing board member of the Sphinx Organization, Howard Hertz encourages, mentors, and creates opportunities for underserved young populations in the world of classical music. His pro bono work with up and coming musicians, writers and artists helps protect intellectual freedom at a time when books and all forms of art have come under political scrutiny. Additionally, his indefatigable efforts to support the growing film industry in Michigan, and his long term presidency of the Detroit Music Awards Foundation which was recently awarded an Emmy for its 30th year broadcast are just some examples of his huge impact on the arts community and artists.
The Cultural Council of Birmingham Bloomfield, in conjunction with their community partners (The Community House, Hometown Life, the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center, and Bloomfield Cablevision), recently announced the 27th annual Birmingham Bloomfield Cultural Arts Award honorees. The Cultural Arts Awards honor persons in our community who a jury of local arts enthusiasts have selected for having had an extraordinary impact on the cultural life of our community. This year’s honorees will be celebrated at a limited in person event at the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center on Friday October 14, from 5:30 7:30 p.m. The ceremony will be broadcast on local cable and be available on our website following the event: https://culturalcouncilbirminghambloomfield.org/.
