The new road consists of over 11,000 sq. yd. of concrete, which includes new pedestrian crossings.
Installation of medians to help with traffic calming and the installation of additional crosswalks to provide for a safer experience for both pedestrians and drivers.
The following construction projects will be close to completion this month:
Work continues on this program by verifying existing water service materials in random locations throughout the City, and will be completed by the middle of November.
The City’s contractor is making progress on the yearly sidewalk program which includes ADA ramps in the downtown area, a new sidewalk along Oak Avenue, and sidewalk repairs between Southfield Road to Cranbrook Road and Maple Road to 14 Mile Road.
The contractor will continue work of eliminating trip hazards along sidewalks in November between Maple Road and Quarton Road, and the west City limits to Quarton Lake and the main branch of the Rouge River.
This month, the Planning Division will continue the conversation about reducing consumption and minimizing waste by discussing the subject of recycling. Recycling consumer waste often provides a person with a sense accomplishment and a prideful glow every time they wheel out a full recycling bin, and for the most part deservedly so.
What most consumers do not know, though, is that they may be unintentionally contributing to a huge issue in the recycling industry by not recycling responsibly Recycling contamination can prevent large batches of material from being recycled. Some contaminants, like food residue, affect the quality and reusability of the end product. Other contaminants, such as plastic bags or coat hangers, are known as “tanglers” and damage important machinery.
To help promote responsible recycling, ensure that recycling bins are clear and obvious, post reminders in your home or business about what materials should be recycled, and always ensure that recyclable items are clean. And remember, the most effective way to reduce waste is to not create it in the first place.
As the City of Birmingham ramps up its focus on sustainability efforts, our residents are a key piece of the puzzle Luckily, there is an easy way that you can help create a better environment this fall change the way you treat your leaves! Fallen leaves play an integral role in ecosystem services in relationship to soil quality and provide an essential habitat for pollinators to overwinter. Leaving your leaves (in some shape or form, and at the right balance) is the most beneficial to our environment.
As a secondary approach, you may consider ditching your gas powered lawn equipment for electric equipment Gas powered leaf blowers are noisy producing high decibel, low frequency sound waves that damage hearing, and cause an inescapable nuisance to homeowners Gas powered leaf blowers are also extremely dirty, spewing out exhaust that includes unburned oil/gas, carbon monoxide, nitrous oxides, and hydrocarbons, all of which cause serious environmental damage.
If you use a lawn service, consider searching for and hiring companies that have committed to greening their operations with an all-electric fleet of tools These small considerations will help Birmingham take strides toward becoming a sustainable and resilient community

Generators are a convenience during a power outage, whether it’s a whole house type that automatically turn on when needed or portable generators used on demand. With these conveniences, however, there are still risks of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. Portable generators create high amounts of CO This gas can get drawn into a home through windows, vents, open doors, etc. The levels created in some cases are 40 times higher than a car engine. There is also a fire risk if a generator is placed too close to a structure or from improper fueling as well When using a portable generator make sure that it is outside and at least 10 feet away from any structure.
Whole house generators can be very safe when installed properly. These generators tend to be much bigger and can produce large amounts of CO Most manufacturers require at least 5 feet of distance from any opening in the home such as dryer vents, bathroom and furnace vents, windows, doors, etc However, due to the surrounding wind breaks from fences and shrubs, this may not be adequate and CO could build up if drawn back into the home.
It is important to have at least one CO detector on every level of your home. In the past two years, the fire department has responded to several calls of high CO caused by portable and whole-house generators When installing a whole-house generator, a permit must be acquired at the City of Birmingham’s Building Department.
