cello Joann Whang is in her second season with the Birdfoot Festival in 2013. She has performed extensively as a soloist and chamber musician throughout North America, Europe, and Asia. Recent appearances include the Acanthes Festival, the Amsterdam Biënnale, the Aspen and Banff Music Festivals, the Delft Chamber Music Festival, Domaine Forget, the Grachtenfestival, and the Storioni Festival. In 2010, she was awarded both first and audience prizes at the Amsterdam Cello Biënnale Competition, resulting in performances with the Amsterdam Sinfonietta.

Her affinity for contemporary music has led her to work with Anssi Karttunen and composers Magnus Lindberg, Martijn Padding, and Kaija Saariaho. She has participated in masterclasses of Lynn Harrell, Ralph Kirshbaum, Mischa Maisky, and Jian Wang. Orchestral highlights include performances at Carnegie Hall, Seoul Arts Center, Shanghai Grand Theatre, and Walt Disney Concert Hall.

Joann began her studies with Metta Watts, Orlando Cole, and Nancy Green. After attending Colburn (B.M.) with Ronald Leonard and Yale (M.M.) with Aldo Parisot, she moved to Paris on a Fulbright Scholarship and graduated at the Royal Conservatory of the Hague with Michel Strauss and Jan-Ype Nota.
