theme of our Fall edition is fitting for Canada’s biotechnology industry right now: Canada’s next steps.

In other words, what is next for the industry?

Canada has quickly established itself as a leader in this vital new industry with some 500 companies and almost $2 billion in annual research and development investments. Canada benefits from a biotech economy; however, we are at a crossroads. Many Canadian biotechnology firms face important obstacles to continued growth, including the lack of access to increased funding, and a regulatory burden that does not reflect the rapidly evolving nature of this sector.

But Canadians want to see biotech happen in this country. BIOTECanada released the results of its second annual national poll on Canadians’ awareness of biotechnology at the launch of National Biotechnology Week this September. In the poll, conducted

by POLLARA, the majority of Canadians (8 in 10) said they support the use of products and processes that involve biotechnology.

While Canadians generally feel good about biotechnology, more than one-third of them do not regard Canada as a biotechnology leader, or able to keep pace with the rest of the world. The results of the poll indicate Canadians want to see the biotechnology industry grow and produce results. So, what are Canada’s next steps?

As the national association, BIOTECanada is the voice for Canada’s biotechnology industry, and so we’ve decided to let our members tell you themselves what the future looks like.

Members of our advisory boards and committees have contributed a number of features to this edition, ranging from the impact of current and pending legislation on Canada’s health care system to intellectual property considerations among the agriculture and nutrition sector. There is huge potential for growth in Canada’s industrial biotechnology sector and we will look at how we can capitalize on this opportunity.

There are also a growing number of vaccine products in the pipeline that will change the health of Canadians and the face of Canada’s health care system. Vaccine News examines the exciting new potential of these products, and the roles industry and government play in the development of Canada’s vaccine industry.

Without financing however, none of Canada’s sectors will be successful, and that is why BIOTECanada and our members have been active in advocating for changes to federal tax policies. The Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED) tax credit program hasn’t been updated since it was introduced in 1985. We saw in the poll results that 81 percent of Canadians believe the federal government should find ways to support our biotech companies.

We’re also pleased to be bringing you highlights from the third annual National Biotechnology Week (NBW). A celebration of Canadian innovation and “imagenenation,” NBW is designed to increase awareness of biotechnology among Canadians. The program continued to grow with more events, announcements and participants involved in activities during the week. In the special six-page insert, we’ve brought you highlights of the week, including the declaration of NBW in many provinces and cities across the country. On page 9, we present the first recipients of the BIOTECanada-Biogen Idec Teaching Excellence Award.

So to answer the question we started with: Canada is moving forward. NBW gives us a chance to celebrate where we’ve been and what we’ve accomplished, but now we will focus on the actions, policies and financing hurdles that need to be overcome to make Canada a stronger international player in the biotechnology industry.

thème de notre numéro d’automne, les prochaines étapes pour le Canada, est tout à fait adapté à la situation actuelle de la biotechnologie au Canada. Qu’est-ce qui attend le secteur?

Le Canada est rapidement devenu un chef de file de cette nouvelle et essentielle industrie qui comprend quelque 500 entreprises, et près de 2 milliards $ sont investis chaque année en recherche et développement. L’économie de la biotechnologie s’avère profitable pour le Canada, mais nous sommes en effet à la croisée des chemins. Des obstacles importants entravent la croissance de nombreuses entreprises canadiennes de biotechnologie, notamment la difficulté d’accéder à plus de financement et un fardeau réglementaire qui ne reflète pas la rapidité d’évolution propre à ce secteur.

Cependant, les Canadiennes et les Canadiens veulent voir évoluer la biotechnologie dans leur pays. BIOTECanada a dévoilé les résultats de son deuxième sondage national annuel sur le degré de connaissance qu’ont les Canadiens de la biotechnologie lors du lancement de la semaine nationale des biotechnologies en septembre dernier. Ce sondage, mené par POLLARA, révèle que la majorité des Canadiens (8 sur 10) appuie l’utilisation de produits et de procédés relevant de la biotechnologie. Bien que les Canadiens aient un sentiment plutôt positif par rapport à la biotechnologie, plus du tiers d’entre eux ne voit pas le Canada comme un chef de file du secteur ou comme un pays pouvant avancer au même rythme que l’industrie à l’échelle mondiale. Les résultats du sondage indiquent que les Canadiens souhaitent voir l’industrie de la biotechnologie évoluer et produire des résultats : alors quelles sont les prochaines étapes pour le Canada?

En tant qu’association nationale, BIOTECanada est le porte-parole de l’industrie de la biotechnologie au Canada et a donc décidé de laisser ses membres exprimer leur vision de l’avenir.

Les membres de nos conseils et comités consultatifs ont produit un certain nombre d’articles de ce numéro : ceux-ci traitent entre autres de questions relatives à l’effet de la loi actuelle sur le système canadien de soins de santé et à la propriété intellectuelle dans le secteur de l’agriculture et de la nutrition. Le potentiel de croissance dans le secteur de l’industrie biotechnologique au Canada étant immense, nous examinerons les moyens de tirer profit de cette occasion.

On peut également compter sur un nombre croissant de vaccins en voie d’être commercialisés, qui amélioreront la santé des Canadiens et changeront le visage du système de soins de santé au Canada. Le Service des nouvelles en matière de vaccins examine le nouveau potentiel prometteur de ces produits et le rôle que jouent l’industrie et le gouvernement dans le développement de l’industrie du vaccin au Canada.

Sans financement, cependant, aucun des secteurs biotechnologiques canadiens ne peut espérer se développer, et c'est la raison pour laquelle BIOTECanada et ses membres veillent activement à la modification de la politique fiscale fédérale. Le programme d’incitation fiscale Recherche scientifique et développement expérimental (RS&DE) n’a pas été mis à jour depuis sa création en 1985. Le sondage montre par ailleurs que 81 % des Canadiens estiment que le gouvernement fédéral devrait trouver des moyens de soutenir les entreprises de biotechnologie.

C’est aussi avec grand plaisir que nous vous présentons les faits marquants de la troisième semaine nationale des biotechnologies (SNB).

En tant que célébration des innovations canadiennes et de l’« imagenenation », la SNB vise à sensibiliser davantage les Canadiens à la biotechnologie. Le programme continue de croître, ayant connu plus d’activités et d’annonces et une plus grande participation au cours de la semaine. Dans l’encart spécial de six pages, nous vous présentons les faits marquants de la semaine y compris et les textes de consécration de la SNB dans de nombreuses provinces et villes à travers le pays. À la page 9, on presente les premiers lauréats du Prix d’excellence en enseignement BIOTECanada-Biogen Idec.

Alors pour répondre à la question posée en introduction : le Canada va de l’avant. La SNB nous permet de célébrer notre parcours et nos réalisations, mais il faut maintenant mettre l’accent sur la prise de mesures, la modification des politiques et l’élimination des obstacles au financement afin que le Canada devienne un acteur international encore plus important dans l’industrie de la biotechnologie.

THREE CANADIAN TEACHERS RECOGNIZED FOR OUTSTANDING LEADERSHIP

One of the more famous scientists of our time said, “It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge.” What Albert Einstein said has been achieved by this year’s three recipients of the BIOTECanada-Biogen Idec Teaching Excellence Award.

L’un des plus célèbres scientifiques de notre temps a dit : « C’est l’art suprême de l’enseignant que d’éveiller la joie dans l’expression créative et la connaissance. » Cette parole d’Albert Einstein, les enseignants récompensés dans le cadre du Prix d’excellence en enseignement BIOTECanadaBiogen Idec Canada l’ont actualisée.

“My family was in the car with me when I got the call,” said Dr. Sheppy Coodin, referring to when he received word he was the 2006 national winner of this new award.

“When I got out, I did a little dance.”

The BIOTECanada-Biogen Idec Teaching Excellence Award is a national program dedicated to promoting and recognizing teaching of biotechnology at the secondary school level in Canada. It includes three annual cash awards—one for $5,000 and two for $2,500 each—to be divided equally between the winning teacher and his or her school. In partnership with the Canadian Biotechnology Education Resource Centre, this new award program was launched during National Biotechnology Week last year, with its first recipients honoured at ceremonies in Toronto, Guelph and Winnipeg this past September.

“We created this award with BIOTECanada to recognize the important role teachers play in educating our future biotech leaders,” said Richard Francis, President and General Manager, Biogen Idec Canada. “And our 2006 winners have certainly shown a great deal of Peter Brenders, President and CEO, BIOTECanada, presented the award to the national winner, Dr. Sheppy Coodin/Peter Brenders, président et chef de la direction, BIOTECanada, present le prix au gagnant national, Sheppy Coodin.

« J’étais en voiture avec ma famille lorsque j’ai reçu l’appel », raconte Sheppy Coodin, Ph. D., à propos du moment où on l’a informé qu’il était le lauréat national 2006 de ce nouveau prix. « Lorsque je suis descendu de voiture, j’ai esquissé quelques pas de danse. » Le Prix d’excellence en enseignement BIOTECanada-Biogen Idec est un programme national consacré à la promotion et à la reconnaissance de l’enseignement en biotechnologie à l’école secondaire au Canada.

Il comprend trois bourses annuelles : une de 5 000 $ et deux de 2 500 $. Chaque bourse est séparée en parts égales entre l’enseignant lauréat et son établissement d’enseignement.

En partenariat avec le Canadian Biotechnology Education Resource Centre, on a lancé ce nouveau programme de récompenses au cours de la semaine nationale des biotechnologies l’an dernier. dedication to biotech, to their schools and most importantly, to their students.”

Dr. Coodin, a biology teacher at the Gray Academy of Jewish Education in Winnipeg, Manitoba, was recognized for his work launching BioTrek, a week-long, summertime program offering a hands-on introduction to biotech for students in grades 10 to 12. “Biotech equipment was sitting in the cupboard for 11 months of the year, and I thought, that’s a waste, because I knew there were a lot of students in the city that would benefit from getting access to the equipment. It was clear right away there was a strong demand among youth in Winnipeg for the program. After four years of doing it in Winnipeg, I thought, let’s run this elsewhere,” said Coodin.

Now, 11 sessions are offered in nine cities across Canada, and the program receives corporate support to enable equal access. Coodin said students who take the program are really excited about the technology and demand for it has grown.

Il est tout de suite apparu évident que le programme intéressait beaucoup de jeunes à Winnipeg. Quatre ans après l’avoir mis en place à Winnipeg, je me suis dit : “Pourquoi ne pas le mettre en place ailleurs?” », relate M. Coodin.

Aujourd’hui, le programme compte onze séances réparties dans neuf villes à travers le Canada, et il bénéficie d’un bénéficie du soutien du secteur privé, ce qui permet une égalité d'accès. Sheppy Coodin affirme que les élèves inscrits au programme sont vraiment enthousiasmés par la technologie et que le programme connaît une demande croissante.

Un autre programme, à Scarborough, en Ontario, est lui aussi en grande demande. En 1996, Gabriel Ayyavoo, un enseignant chevronné du Francis Libermann Catholic High School, a fondé un club de biotechnologie parascolaire.

On lui a remis le prix pour avoir permis aux élèves d’expérimenter concrètement la biotechnologie grâce à l’utilisation d’équipement d’occasion.

Another program in Scarborough, Ontario is also in high demand. In 1996, Gabriel Ayyavoo, a veteran teacher at Francis Libermann Catholic High School, began an afterschool Biotechnology Club. He was selected to receive the award this year for his efforts in bringing second-hand equipment to students, giving them hands-on experience with biotechnology.

“If paper-clip gene splicing analogies can excite students, what more can I say about splicing pGLO Plasmid gene from jellyfish! It is this sort of teaching strategy that brings curiosity to my bio students,” said Ayyavoo. By raising public and private funds, he upgraded the biology lab, bringing in new computers and sophisticated equipment.

His dedication to educating students about biotechnology qualified him to receive one of the two $2,500 awards this year.

C’est ce type de stratégie pédagogique qui suscite la curiosité de mes élèves en biologie! », explique M. Ayyavoo. Grâce à une collecte de fonds publics et privés, il a modernisé le laboratoire de biologie, le dotant de nouveaux ordinateurs et d’équipement de pointe. Son dévouement à l’enseignement de la biotechnologie au secondaire lui a permis de remporter l’un des deux prix de 2 500 $ cette année.

Le second lauréat du prix de 2 500 $ a participé à l’intégration d’un programme de biotechnologie dans le cours de biologie de deuxième cycle de son école, le Centennial Collegiate & Vocational Institute, à Guelph, en Ontario. Doug (Dragan) Gajic enseigne la biotechnologie depuis 12 ans, et il est heureux de constater qu’on reconnaît le travail des enseignants en biotechnologie. « Au cours des années, j’ai pu voir enfin l’intégration de la biotechnologie aux manuels scolaires. Désormais, nous avons besoin de plus d’ateliers pour y initier les enseignants », suggère M. Gajic.

The second $2,500 award winner has helped his school, Centennial Collegiate & Vocational Institute in Guelph, Ontario, to integrate biotech curriculum into the senior biology program. Doug (Dragan) Gajic has been teaching biotech for 12 years, and he’s pleased to see biotech teachers getting recognition. “In my years of teaching, I’ve seen biotech finally get into the textbooks. Now we need more workshops to train more teachers in it,” said Gajic.

Gajic was recognized for his work in educating his colleagues, running day-long workshops in his area and for the Toronto District School Board. Gajic also created a molecular biology toolbox allowing other TDSB teachers to sign out equipment and reagents for various experiments in their classes. With the prize money for his school, Gajic will purchase a Thermal Cycler, a tool allowing students to do PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) work, a technique that can amplify and allow a very small quantity of DNA to be analyzed. He plans to put the Thermal Cycler into a kit and circulate it throughout the board, after running workshops for teachers on how to use it.

Access to high-tech equipment contributes to the huge student interest in biotech Gajic has witnessed. He said he’s been successful with the biotech program because there are opportunities for students of biotech, such as the Sanofi Aventis Biotech Challenge. “They hear about biotech in the news and want to know what it’s about, and we run a course here that is allowing them the chance to do some hands-on work.”

Back in Scarborough, Ayyavoo’s students will get more hands-on experience with new equipment. He will dedicate half his prize money to providing his students with new pipettes, apparatus, chemicals, biological enzymes and other paraphernalia. Ayyavoo will also continue to conduct teacher seminars that promote student biotech research.

“I want to reach out to as many educators in Canada because ‘Example is not the main thing in influencing people, it is the only thing,’ as I share the mighty thoughts of Albert Einstein,” said Ayyavoo.

Doug Gajic a remarqué que l’accès à de l’équipement de pointe est un grand facteur de stimulation de l’intérêt des élèves pour la biotechnologie. Il affirme que le succès de son programme de biotechnologie repose sur le fait que le secteur offre des possibilités aux élèves, comme le Défi biotech Sanofi-Aventis. « Ils entendent parler de la biotechnologie dans l’actualité, veulent savoir de quoi il s’agit, et nous offrons un programme qui leur permet de le découvrir. » À Scarborough, les élèves de Gabriel Ayyavoo pourront faire d’autres expériences concrètes de la biotechnologie grâce à du nouvel équipement. Q. Canada is known as a world leader in the adoption of agriculture biotechnology. In the 1970s for example, Canadian scientists developed an early form of canola using plant breeding techniques, and continue to develop new innovations for healthy food products. How is your department preparing Canadians for the next wave of agriculture biotechnology innovations such as drought tolerance and industrial traits? insights Fall/Automne 2006

The basic research skills we have employed for over 120 years in the development of crops and livestock and production practices suited to our Canadian climate are the same skills we will use to focus on new market and product opportunities from agricultural production. We will, of course, be adding new skills in emerging areas of science and technology to be able to take advantage of, and to contribute to, ongoing advances in science and technology.

But we can’t do everything alone. Partnerships are essential to make progress and we will be actively pursuing partnerships with other departments, other governments, academia and the private sector to assemble the best possible teams to address the issues, provide the solutions and take advantage of the opportunities that arise.

Connecting science to the marketplace, engaging users and consumers in the product development process will be essential elements in promoting successful innovation and commercialization of new products and in developing new markets for Canadian agriculture.

Q. From your perspective as Minister, what social and economic benefits does your government look for from biotechnology?

The future for bioproducts is bright. Market opportunities for bioproducts are estimated to be very significant. Our research shows that by 2010, the biochemicals and bioplastics market will be approximately $160 to 240 billion.

Q. De votre point de vue de ministre, quels bienfaits sociaux et économiques votre gouvernement espère-t-il de la biotechnologie?

L’avenir des bioproduits est prometteur. Les possibilités de marché pour les bioproduits semblent considérables. Nos études montrent que le marché des produits biochimiques et des bioplastiques oscillera entre 160 et 240 milliards $ (CAN) d’ici 2010. D’ici 2050, le marché des biocarburants et de la bioénergie s’élèvera à environ 170 milliards $ (CAN), et la biomasse, elle, fournira approximativement 30 pour cent des besoins mondiaux en combustibles et en produits chimiques.

Le 13 octobre dernier, le nouveau gouvernement canadien a investi 750 000 $ pour appuyer les recherches en biomatériaux du Composites Innovation Centre, à Winnipeg. L’objectif de ce projet sera d’évaluer si les fibres naturelles des plantes comme le chanvre et le lin pourront devenir des matériaux de renforcement en remplacement de la fibre de verre et de la fibre de carbone, créées par l’homme, pour les autobus, les avions, les articles de sport et les véhicules de plaisance.

Plus globalement, nous nous sommes fixé un objectif pour les biocarburants – cinq pour cent d’éthanol dans les carburants d’ici 2010 – qui créera de nouveaux débouchés pour les cultures traditionnelles.

C’est ainsi qu’il faut envisager l’avenir. De nouveaux produits, de nouvelles utilisations et de nouveaux marchés pour la biomasse agricole offriront aux secteurs canadiens de l’agriculture et de l’agroalimentaire une grande durabilité et une longue rentabilité.

AstraZeneca has also pursued significant partnerships in Canada, such as the $10 million investment in NAEJA Pharmaceutical Inc., of Edmonton. NAEJA is a well-established chemistry contract research company specializing in pre-clinical discovery and development. The company will work with chemists from AstraZeneca's state-of-the-art drug discovery centre in Montreal, Quebec, to identify potential drug candidates in the area of pain management.

In today’s world of rapid scientific and technological advance, no company can rely exclusively on its own discovery and development. Exciting partnerships can lead the way to exponential benefits for patients who one day will benefit from the fruits of these collaborations. GROWING AGRICULTURE AND NUTRITION VALUE FOR CANADA INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY AND DATA PROTECTION CONSIDERATIONS

Historically, scientific excellence has been a foundation of innovation such as the discovery of insulin in 1921 by Dr. Frederick Banting and Charles Best to demonstrate that a protein could be used to treat diabetes. Canada’s regulatory excellence to assure safety with extensive scientific data reviews has enabled proteins produced through biotechnology to provide benefits to agriculture with food nutrition breakthroughs emerging. Will this innovation, regulatory safety reviews and enhanced quality of life be stifled by the lack of intellectual property rights?

The mission of BIOTECanada’s Agriculture and Nutrition Policy Advisory Board is to work with key government officials and stakeholders to create a public policy and regulatory environment that promotes the development of agricultural biotechnology in Canada. In order to meet this mission, we have developed key strategies around our vision that Canada is globally competitive in biotechnology through the creation of knowledge (research) and the ability to act through the commercialization of research.

Thus, the Agriculture and Nutrition Policy Advisory Board had recognized the importance of intellectual property as a strategic element for Canada’s success as a global innovation leader. We completed a white paper on key principles for intellectual property and respecting rights of proprietary data used for safety assessments. Why is proprietary data and confidential business information protection needed?

Products of biotechnology are thoroughly regulated by Health Canada and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency to ensure safety to humans, animals, the environment and non-target organisms. The regulatory safety assessments and approvals require extensive scientific studies consisting of data, information and knowledge prior to commercialization of the product. Development and interpretation of these scientific studies involves significant investment in time and money and significant risk of invention since there is no guarantee the novel product will be approved for commercial use. Therefore, the data, information and knowledge in these studies submitted to regulatory agencies are valuable assets and property that must be protected against unfair commercial use by competitors or misuse by third parties. This protection enables further innovation and submission of extensive safety data.

Is there a legal basis for intellectual property protection to show us the path?

Property rights have an international basis in law and agreements under the United Nations (UN) Charter on Human Rights; the UN International Covenant on 18

What is the path forward to assure Canada’s competitive advantage and quality of life?

The white paper outlines the key principles and responsibilities for the protection and use of proprietary data and confidential business information. The Advisory Board understands and realizes the strength of innovation through conversion of data to knowledge and products.

The protection of data ownership and respect of the data and knowledge for regulatory approvals and commercial use must be clearly defined to find our global leadership in biotechnology and an improved future for society. We must make the right decisions and pave the path forward for future generations.

As the national association for the industry, BIOTECanada’s members are integral to this process.

Biotech affects Canadians across all sectors: health, agriculture and nutrition, industrial biotechnology, manufacturing, the environment, forestry, etc. As a result, biotechnology has many publics: the researchers and academic community, investors, industry itself, public officials, and the general public and consumers of biotechnology.

Through programs such as National Biotechnology Week, the industry reaches out to the publics through a number of initiatives.

The following is an inside perspective on how Canada’s national association is working within its publics to improve Canada’s role in biotechnology.

The goals of the Public Affairs Committee include achieving greater levels of outreach and alignment among the technology sectors by serving as a resource for sectorspecific committees, enhancing the overall advocacy program for Canadian companies, developing public relations and communication opportunities for the industry, coordinating and facilitating government relations at the federal level, working to secure partnerships with other organizations, and, in general, ensuring that the profile and credibility of Canada’s biotech community continues to grow.

There are four main action plans focusing on media strategy, parliamentary relations, alliance and coalition building, National Biotechnology Week, and a number of specific projects, including the BIOTECanada-Biogen Idec Teaching Excellence Award. An ongoing challenge is to continuously anticipate and respond to changing public policy and legislative priorities within the federal government while maintaining a focus on key initiatives for the biotechnology industry.

In the area of media relations and media strategy, the Public Affairs (PA) Committee is seeking to develop stories from member companies to seed print media. We will be working on this activity throughout the fall, and PA Committee Co-Chair Joanne Harack will be calling on individual company representatives to submit compelling

stories about their organizations. Media strategy is fundamental to increasing public visibility for our sector within our communities, and we will be focusing on placements in community newspapers as well as in selected national media.

The summer break in the parliamentary calendar allowed for some relationship building within federal government departments that are of particular importance to our members – Agriculture, Industry, Health and Finance.

This September, a submission was made, and BIOTECanada appeared before the House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance in support of their pre-budget consultations. The presentation featured recommendations for enhancing the SR&ED tax credits, ensuring equitable tax treatment for U.S.-based LLCs, funding initiatives for vaccines and additions to the agricultural innovation strategy published earlier in the year. As well, individual letters to ministers Flaherty, Bernier, Strahl and Clement were issued at the end of the summer to provide a basis for dialogue and recommendations to their offices over the coming year.

Throughout the year, BIOTECanada will be working to secure appearance opportunities before a number of the parliamentary committees, in order to further influence the political agenda. Of particular importance will be the association’s input to Minister Bernier’s science and technology strategy.

An important area of focus for the committee has been the building of coalitions and alliances with organizations that have similar goals, objectives and interests. In addition to our long-standing relationships with members of the National Biotechnology Accord, the Council for Biotechnology Information and the Biotechnology Human Resource Council, our association has forged collaborations with the Canadian Biotechnology Education Resource Centre, Canadians for Health Research, Rx&D, MEDEC and the Information Technology Association of Canada. The Public Affairs Committee will continue to advocate coalitions with like-minded organizations. These are an effective means to build grassroots support and profile for the association, and are extremely valuable when we are able to approach government with a coordinated message.

National Biotechnology Week was better than ever this year, and was launched with the release of the second annual poll gauging Canadians’ awareness of biotechnology.

The committee will continue to gather information on public perceptions of biotechnology, outreach to federal politicians and affect positive change in regulation to support the development of Canada’s biotech industry. L’apport de l’association à la stratégie en science et technologie du ministre Bernier revêtira une importance particulière.

La semaine nationale des biotechnologies a eu plus de succès que jamais cette année; elle s’est ouverte sur la publication de la deuxième enquête annuelle évaluant les opinions des Canadiens par rapport à la biotechnologie.

Another successful National Biotechnology Week (NBW) concluded September 30, far surpassing milestones in event participation, public official engagement, and media coverage. Over 60 events and announcements across 15 cities were attended by thousands of Canadians.

Every province participated in the program, with 10 municipalities and cities declaring NBW in their region.

Une nouvelle semaine nationale des biotechnologies (SNB) a pris fin le 30 septembre. La participation aux activités, l’engagement des fonctionnaires et la couverture médiatique ont dépassé de loin ceux des années antérieures. Des milliers de Canadiens et de Canadiennes ont participé ou assisté à plus de 60 activités et annonces dans 15 villes du pays. Toutes les provinces ont participé au programme, et 10 municipalités ou villes ont déclaré cette semaine SNB dans leur région.

On Parliament Hill during National Advocacy Day, almost 50 industry leaders met with over 75 public officials. The NBW program is designed to celebrate the success of Canada’s biotech industry and to inform Canadians and our federal and provincial decision makers about the technology: the science, its benefits and Canada’s role in the global marketplace. An important part of education, however, is understanding what people already know. That is why we ask Canadians to tell us what they think about biotechnology.

At the launch of NBW in Vancouver on September 21, BIOTECanada released the results of our second annual poll, in partnership with POLLARA. Again this year, almost 80 percent of Canadians support the use of products and processes that involve biotechnology, but when asked if they have a positive, negative or no reaction to the term “biotechnology,” the majority (55%) have no reaction.

Programs such as NBW are designed to inform Canadians that biotechnology does in fact impact them on a daily basis through the food they eat, the medicines they take, the detergents they use, and so on.

Overall, Canadians see the benefits biotechnology offers in three main sectors: agriculture, health and the environment. However, the industry is not regarded as a world leader by Canadians despite the strong level and precedence of research excellence in the country.

NBW launches with lively discussion T

his year, BIOTECanada and BC Biotech welcomed two leading international biotech figures to the stage in Vancouver for a lively session moderated by Dr. Sid Katz, University of British Columbia, at the official launch of NBW – One World: Being a Player in Biotechnology’s Global Convergence.

Dr. Ronald Cape, the founder of Cetus Corporation and a long-time biotech investor, spoke about how Canada can take advantage of its strengths to be more competitive.

David Ewing Duncan, journalist and founder of BioAgenda Institute, spoke about the importance of communicating about biotech and encouraging dialogue on complex issues.

The two experts noted the successes Canada has had to date, and the similarities and differences between Canada and the U.S. Canadian investors are less risk prone, and the rise of biotech in other areas such as India and China are becoming Canada’s new competition. However, Canada has a strong research community and continued investment in its biotechnology development will create an environment that is sustainable and attractive to high-level researchers.

With Canada’s potential in the industrial biotechnology sector, the future looks bright for its biotech industry.

The potential is here, and throughout this issue, you will read about what the industry is doing to take Canada to its next stages of biotech development.

These include a number of actions to be taken by our federal government, including improved tax programs, efficient regulatory processes and approval times, and financing initiatives to support the industry.

Over 80 percent of Canadians also agree the federal government should find ways to help support Canadian biotechnology companies develop new products. And almost 90 percent say Canada’s health care system should be willing to pay more for advances in new health biotechnologies.

Biotechnology is a pervasive technology that is here to stay. Its impact on almost every aspect of our lives is undeniable, and with ongoing support, Canada truly can be a world leader.

As these headlines appear, a more subtle biotechnology revolution in health care is underway as Canada’s vaccine manufacturers introduce an exciting array of vaccines to the Canadian marketplace.

Already this year, new vaccines for cervical cancer, infant gastroenteritis and meningitis have reached Canadians.

Within the next few years, Canadians will witness the arrival of an unprecedented array of new vaccines and biotechnology products to prevent and treat high-profile diseases such as various forms of cancer, HIV/AIDS, and even chronic diseases such as arthritis and diabetes.

The introduction of these technologies will allow the health care system to be more proactive and therefore preventative in dealing with many diseases. However, the development of new health technologies is an expensive, complicated, time-consuming and risky process for manufacturers. If Canada’s health care system is to truly benefit from advanced vaccine technologies, it will need a favourable vaccine environment as well as funding for immunization programs, efficient regulation, and partnerships with industry. This is a core mission of the BIOTECanada Vaccine Industry Committee (VIC).

Canada’s public health system has recognized that vaccines prevent disease and save lives. The success can be attributed to partnership: The vaccine industry, which has developed and produced most vaccines used today, and governments have developed targeted public health programs to immunize children and adults.

The development of Canada’s vaccine industry To date, the federal government, in partnership with provinces and territories, has taken many positive steps to foster a greater collaboration between industry and government in Canada. The first major accomplishment, which had the endorsement of the VIC, was the creation of the Public Health Agency of Canada with Dr. David Butler Jones as Canada’s first-ever Chief Public Health Officer.

Secondly, the federal government has invested $300 million to strengthen Canada’s immunization programs over the past three years. The benefit of this investment is evident.

All of Canada’s provinces and territories now vaccinate children against whooping cough, and 12 provide public programs to protect children against chicken pox.

Similarly, 10 of 13 provinces and territories now vaccinate children against pneumococcal disease and meningitis.

Prior to this funding initiative, less than one-quarter of the jurisdictions had programs in place to protect children from these deadly diseases. This modest investment in public health has improved the overall health status of Canadians and will continue to pay dividends to the larger health care system well into the future.

Maintaining the momentum Canada’s vaccine industry is committed to maintaining the momentum begun through these initiatives. Our first priority is the maintenance of the investment in immunization programs. The Vaccine Industry Committee supports the renewal of the $100 million in funding for immunization programs. In addition, the VIC is recommending the government dedicate an additional $100 million per year to ensure new vaccine technologies can be incorporated into public vaccine programs. Canadians support this allocation of funds. In a recent poll conducted by BIOTECanada, nearly 90 percent of Canadians feel the health care system should finance new advances in health biotechnologies.

By pursuing policies that encourage the introduction, adoption and equitable access to new vaccines in Canada, the vaccine industry and the federal government can ensure Canada remains a leader in research and development for new vaccines as well as a leader in public health.

Canadian universities and companies have led the charge against SARS and avian influenza and are leading the development of new cancer vaccine technologies. The industry-government partnerships embodied in progressive immunization funding and regulatory initiatives will help to ensure new vaccines are available to improve the health of Canadians as well as stimulate the continued development of Canada’s biotechnology industry.

He has over 28 years of experience in the Canadian pharmaceutical industry, including 16 years at Merck. He is responsible for the development and implementation of many strategic and tactical marketing plans for established and emerging products within a variety of therapeutic fields.

Similar to any new innovative thought or idea, biotechnology has received its share of scrutiny and doubt from society.

Individuals, groups and organizations have challenged the advantages of biotechnology by raising concerns from the ethics of cross-species gene transfers in regard to food processing, to the human inequality that such a phenomenon may result in. Even with these claims and accusations as to what earth-shattering, unethical changes biotechnology may cause, one thing is for certain: since its initiation, biotechnology has an immensely positive effect on the entire world, with so much hope and promise lingering for the future.

Comme pour tout nouveau concept ou toute idée innovatrice, la biotechnologie a été passée au peigne fin et scrutée de près par la société qui avait ses doutes. Des individus, des groupes et des organismes ont remis en question les bienfaits de la biotechnologie en soulevant toutes sortes d'inquiétudes, qu’il s’agisse des questions d'éthique soulevées par les transferts génétiques entre espèces dans le cas de la transformation des aliments ou des inégalités qu'un tel phénomène peut créer. Within Canada’s health system, the use of biotechnology has led to a great number of innovative changes that are bettering the lives of all citizens.

The positive health effects of biotechnology can be divided into three categories: those that act as preventative tools, those that are used for diagnosis, and those that treat.

applications that will provide the tools and treatments for some of Canada’s largest health issues, such as the treatment of HIV and AIDS, Alzheimer’s disease and diabetes.

Overall, biotechnology is a promising, thriving new development that has recently begun to reveal its endless benefits to Canada’s society and its citizens.

In recent years, the use of vaccinations has helped prevent millions of deaths and illnesses within Canada. In today’s society, there is little worry of contracting or dying from diseases such as polio, measles and hepatitis B. For example, before the development of such vaccinations, the cases of measles found in Canada peaked at nearly 300,000 per year.

In contrast, only seven individuals contracted measles in Canada by 2004. Soon these ancient epidemics, which have already taken more innocent lives than necessary, will become altogether non-existent.

Today Canadians no longer worry about developing measles. Even the influenza virus or the common winter flu can be avoided by investing merely 20 minutes in order to be vaccinated at a local clinic or school. In a lifestyle that is becoming more hectic and demanding everyday, maintaining a healthy body at all times is a true blessing! The value of vaccinations to Canadians is beyond measure. The prevention of diseases and unnecessary deaths, which can be achieved through the simple task of obtaining a series of vaccinations, is a direct benefit of biotechnology.

A second group of health benefits biotechnology has had on Canadian society are the improvement of diagnosis tools and techniques, as well as more accurate diagnoses of various ailments. Due to tools and techniques based on biotechnological concepts, many diseases and health conditions can now be diagnosed with greater ease and accuracy.

Biotechnology has enabled the sequencing of the human genome. As a result, doctors and researchers now have a better understanding of how to detect, diagnose, and treat various diseases. Because of advancements in diagnostics techniques, patients are able to receive treatments that are aimed specifically for their particular diagnoses. More importantly, those individuals more susceptible to disease can undergo screening, so that diseases can be discovered and treated earlier. As a result, people receive health care that is targeted to their personal needs. Also, any health problems a person may experience in his/her lifetime can be detected and treated at the earliest stage possible, resulting in better chances of making a full recovery.

A biotechnological application currently being developed is the detection and treatment of AIDS. The pathogens that cause AIDS can be detected through screening a patient’s blood and organs. One day, doctors will be able to use biotechnological tools to target and gain information about the exact infection being treated. The results would then indicate the best choice of antibiotics that should be prescribed for the patient. This is yet another example of

Avec un train de vie de plus en plus difficile et exigeant, maintenir un corps en santé est une vraie bénédiction. Les vaccins sont d'une valeur inestimable pour les Canadiens. La prévention de maladies et de décès inutiles, grâce à l’administration d’une simple série de vaccins, est un bienfait direct de la biotechnologie.

L'amélioration des outils et techniques diagnostiques ainsi que la possibilité d'établir des diagnostics plus précis constituent d’autres effets positifs de la biotechnologie sur la santé des Canadiens. Grâce à des outils et des techniques basés sur des concepts biotechnologiques, bien des maladies et des affections peuvent maintenant être diagnostiquées avec plus de facilité et de précision.

In addition to diagnosing medical conditions, biotechnology has permanently changed the methods in which the actual treatments of various diseases are carried out. Due to an increased knowledge of a human’s genetic makeup, treatments can be catered to specific human needs. This, in turn, leads to better outcomes, as well as less stress placed on individual patients. In other words, when fighting off diseases, each patient follows a treatment made specifically for maximum efficiency within their bodies.

Cystic fibrosis is a devastating disease that was once guaranteed to lead to death. This genetic disorder causes mucus build-up in the lungs, which promotes bacterial growth and infections and inflammation. Patient lung tissue is slowly destroyed, and eventually, patients will be unable to carry out respiration efficiently. Without a cure

for this disease, patients were estimated to barely reach their early adult years before slowly dying from loss of pulmonary function. However, biotechnology has changed that!

It is believed the genetic mutation responsible for cystic fibrosis actually prevents adenosine trisphosphate, or ATP, from reaching lung cells. To combat this, biotechnology research is being carried out in order to develop a form of ATP that can be inhaled into the lungs, allowing patients to receive the energy required to carry out necessary cellular functions. Due to this research, doctors and scientists are becoming more certain that various treatment options for cystic fibrosis, such as an aerosol inhaler containing ATP, will surface shortly.

In this generation alone, cystic fibrosis may stop claiming hundreds of innocent lives per year. The development of treatment options, and even a possible cure for cystic fibrosis, can only be made possible due to biotechnology.

Health is an extremely important aspect of every Canadian’s life. Because of this, the various applications of health biotechnology play an important role in providing a level of health care that is second to none in the entire world. The most important benefits that biotechnology has on Canadians are those that directly relate to the health and well-being of overall society.

Biotechnological tools, techniques and research are paving the way to an improved, more precise and more advanced way of looking at human health. More and more diseases, such as measles, are being prevented with the invention and use of vaccinations. More so, the development of superior medicinal tools have led to the ability to diagnose various diseases during their earlier stages and with increasing accuracy. Lastly, improvements in treatment options for diseases such as cystic fibrosis are allowing humans to live their lives without any worries that their next breath may be their very last.

Even though biotechnology is still developing, it has already shown many benefits within the Canadian health system. More importantly, continuing research in the field of biotechnology will ensure newly developed health applications will become available shortly. Because of its potential to save lives, as well as to improve the life of every Canadian in regard to health and well-being, biotechnology is an extremely advantageous and valuable asset within Canada’s health care system.

Malgré le fait que la biotechnologie en soit encore à ses débuts, elle a déjà fait preuve de nombreux avantages à l'intérieur du système de santé canadien. Voilà pourquoi il est important de continuer la recherche dans le secteur de la biotechnologie de façon à assurer que les applications de santé nouvellement élaborées seront disponibles prochainement. Canada has the raw materials, the talent, the companies and the research laboratories to compete internationally for a significant portion of the bio-economy. Advances in genomics, demands for sustainable manufacturing processes and higher energy costs are driving development of industrial biotechnology applications in fine chemistry, polymers, biofuels and forest products manufacturing.

Industrial biotechnology is predicted to be a $150 billion business within 25 years. Global companies are creating whole new business units based on industrial biotechnology applications. It is important that Canada not lose its momentum in this sector so we can maintain our competitive edge globally.

In July, Canada played host to the 2006 World Congress on Industrial Biotechnology and Bioprocessing. Industrial biotechnology is an “everywhere technology,” touching all aspects of our lives. The over 1,100 attendees to the congress demonstrated this through discussions on the latest biotechnological advances that promise to revolutionize the manufacturing of transportation fuels, pharmaceuticals,

common chemicals and even clothing. The meeting showcased Canadian technology and demonstrated how health, agricultural and environmental biotechnology are converging to meet the growing demands for “green” solutions to many tough resource challenges.

Fueling Canada’s success Without question, the industrial biotechnology application that is receiving the most attention is the production of renewable fuels such as ethanol and biodiesel. The renewable fuels standards implemented in the United States and proposed in Canada have created an avalanche of investment in new processing facilities and new biofuel technologies. Looking under the hood, however, one sees the opportunity for Canada’s biotechnology industry.

Biofuels are built upon the biotech-improved crop varieties used as feedstocks, and the enzymes used to convert starch and cellulose to fuels. Canadian biotechnology companies are currently involved in developing new crop varieties optimized for biofuel applications, and likewise, are precisely engineering enzymes to more efficiently convert new feedstocks such as waste wood and municipal waste into biofuels.

Industrial biotechnology is, however, more than just biofuels—much more. The production of biofibers and biomaterials is only just beginning. Soon carpets, clothing, plastics and many other common materials will be available

In the pulp and paper industry, a 10 to 15 percent reduction of chlorine use can be realized by using biotech processes industry-wide. Canadians are even working to produce a car that utilizes biomaterials in door panels, seat cushions and dashboards.

Next steps for Canada’s bio-industrial sector Canada must move quickly to capitalize on our intellectual and natural resources or our international competitors will.

Companies are eyeing Canada’s vast forest biomass resources as a source of biofeedstocks. Scientists are examining our marine and arctic microbes for new enzymatic properties that could be used in biomanufacturing. And Canadian technology is lured south of the border through easier access to venture capital. We must move quickly through the creation of an enabling policy environment to ensure that the returns of our investments in the bio-economy accrue to Canadians.

Canada needs to complete work on a broad national standard for renewable fuels. This standard should recognize ethanol and biodiesel, and be flexible enough to recognize potential future renewable fuels such as bio-butanol and bio-hydrogen as well.

resources. Policies such as these will encourage the development of the Canadian bio-economy value chain from the farm gate to the chemical plant to the consumer.

Canada must also outline a competitive regulatory strategy for industrial biotechnology. Industry needs to know that a predicable, science-based regulatory pathway exists for new products. Procedures from Canadian Food Inspection Agency approvals of new industrial biotech crops to Environment Canada regulation of “new substances” must be designed to enable the companies to commercialize and introduce new products and manufacturing processes.

To support the development of Canada’s bio-economy, BIOTECanada created an Industrial and Environmental Committee. This new committee will address the federal policy needs of the growing cadre of Canadian companies working to bring the bio-economy to its full potential.

Industrial biotechnology is already part of our everyday lives, from stonewashed jeans to enzyme-enhanced detergents. In the coming years, the life sciences revolution will be employed in countless ways to green our industries and environment, touching all aspects of our lives. This adoption of biotech products and processes has the potential to strengthen all aspects Canada’s economy.

LES CONDITIONS CANADA’S CLIMATE POUR LA BIOTECHFOR HEALTH NOLOGIE DE LA BIOTECHNOLOGY SANTÉ AU CANADA

Babiak, Ortho Biotech Canada’s health biotechnology community is celebrating two recent successes that mark a significant improvement in the environment for the introduction of new biotech therapeutics in Canada. Both have been long-standing priorities for BIOTECanada members and the subject of National Advocacy Day requests to the federal government.

Positive changes Health Canada’s Biologics and Genetic Therapies Directorate (BGTD) recently announced the elimination of its submission backlog six months ahead of schedule. This improvement in regulatory performance means Canada’s biotechnology companies can now rely on predicable, efficient reviews of new therapies and a quicker time to market in Canada. The challenge will now be to ensure the BGTD retains the budget and personnel resources necessary to meet performance targets in the face of a growing number of biotech-based treatments.

Another milestone was reached in October with the publication of final regulations to implement a data protection regime in Canada, bringing Canada more in line with leading international competitors. Innovative therapies will now enjoy eight years of data protection post-licence, with a six-year ban against subsequent-entry submissions.

Canada’s biotechnology industry was a key voice in ensuring data protection could be adapted to biological treatments.

The work of Jamie Mills from Gowling Lafleur Henderson LLP and the other members of BIOTECanada’s Health Advisory Board were integral to this positive outcome.

Ils concernent des priorités de longue date pour les membres de BIOTECanada et faisaient partie des demandes lors de chaque Journée nationale de défense de nos intérêts auprès du gouvernement fédéral.

Des changements positifs La Direction des produits biologiques et des thérapies génétiques (DPBTG) de Santé Canada a récemment annoncé l’élimination de son retard dans les approbations six mois plus tôt que prévu. Cette amélioration de rendement de l’approbation réglementaire signifie que les entreprises canadiennes de biotechnologies peuvent maintenant compter sur des examens efficaces dont elles peuvent se prévaloir pour les nouveaux traitements ainsi que sur une commercialisation plus rapide au Canada. Le défi consiste maintenant à s’assurer que la DPBTG conserve le budget et les ressources en personnel nécessaires au respect de ses objectifs alors que le nombre de nouveaux traitements biotechnologiques est en croissance.

Health Canada also has a regulatory framework modernization project underway, realizing that a modern, internationally competitive regulatory system is imperative to ensuring Canadians can access modern biological therapies. This long-term project will allow Canada to prepare for the next wave of biotech innovations just now moving toward commercialization.

Challenges ahead Despite these significant positive changes, hurdles still remain to the adoption of advanced biotech therapeutics in Canada. Patient access issues, chiefly as a result of the inflexible and unaccountable Common Drug Review (CDR) system still restrict Canadians’ access to new health innovations. Since its creation in 2003, the CDR, a part of the non-governmental Canadian Agency for Drugs and Technology in Health (CADTH), has rejected 100 percent of all first-in-class biological products it has reviewed.

These negative recommendations have denied treatment to thousands of Canadians who have no other therapeutic options or who suffer from rare genetic disorders. This outcome is alarming as one of the goals of our Canadian industry is to provide therapeutic options for unmet needs.

Surprisingly, despite the fact the CADTH has received $45 million in federal funding, the work of the Canadian Expert Drug Advisory Committee occurs behind closed doors, unaccountable to the Government or the public.

This system must be reformed and opened to public scrutiny before it has a long-term chilling effect on our biotechnology industry.

Data protection Data protection has been implemented in Canada, but the challenge facing biotechnology companies due to the emergence of Subsequent-Entry Biologics remains.

The European Union and the United States have already approved subsequent-entry biological products. As more biological therapies lose patent protection in the coming years, pressure will grow for governments to rapidly approve so-called “subsequent-entry” products.

The biotech industry must remain vigilant to ensure regulators understand that biological therapeutics are not easily copied and that “generic” biologics simply do not exist. We must also ensure patient safety remains the first priority in any discussion about the approval of these products. Finally, any approval of subsequent-entry products must only occur following a robust public debate on the process and procedures to be followed.

Canadians do understand the positive impact biotechnology has on their health. Over 80 percent expect to realize benefits to their health, according to a recent poll conducted

by BIOTECanada and POLLARA. In addition, over 80 percent of Canadians also believe the federal government should pay more to ensure access to the newest therapies. The technologies emerging from our laboratories and research 48

Les problèmes d’accessibilité que subissent les patients, principalement en raison de la rigidité du Programme commun d’évaluation des médicaments (PCEM) et du fait que celui-ci n’a pas à rendre de comptes, empêchent toujours les Canadiens d’accéder à de nouveaux traitements innovants en santé. Depuis sa création en 2003, le PCEM – une division de l’Agence canadienne des médicaments et des technologies de la santé (ACMTS), un organisme non gouvernemental – a refusé 100 % des produits biologiques pionniers qu’il a examinés.

Ces refus ont privé de traitement des milliers de Canadiens qui n’ont aucune autre possibilité sur le plan thérapeutique ou qui souffrent de troubles génétiques rares. Cette situation est alarmante, car l’industrie canadienne doit chercher à offrir des possibilités de traitement pour les besoins non satisfaits. Étonnamment, malgré le fait que l’ACMTS a reçu 45 millions $ en financement de la part du fédéral, le Comité consultatif canadien d’expertise sur les médicaments (CCCEM) travaille dans le secret, sans avoir à rendre de comptes au gouvernement ou au public. Ce système doit être réformé, et le public doit avoir un droit de regard, avant qu’un effet paralysant de longue durée se fasse sentir sur notre industrie biotechnologique.

BIOGRAPHY Lesia M. Babiak is currently the Director, Federal Affairs and Health Policy, with Ortho Biotech, a Division of Janssen-Ortho Inc. In addition, to leading Janssen’s efforts federally, she is active in influencing federal strategies through a number of industry association appointments, including as Chair of the BIOTECanada Health Advisory Board, and Chair of the Rx&D FPT Working Group and as a member of several other association committees.

Plus de 80 % d’entre eux s’attendent à en voir les bienfaits selon une récente enquête effectuée par BIOTECanada et POLLARA. De même, plus de 80 % des Canadiens croient que le gouvernement fédéral devrait débourser davantage pour garantir l’accès aux traitements les plus avancés. By 2050, the biofuels and bioenergy market will be about $170 billion, and by 2050, biomass will provide approximately 30 percent of global needs for fuels and chemicals.

On October 13, Canada’s new government invested $750,000 to support biomaterial research at the Winnipegbased Composites Innovation Centre. This project will investigate how naturally occurring fibres in plants, such as hemp and flax, can be turned into reinforcement materials that replace man-made glass and carbon fibres in buses, aircraft, sporting goods and recreational vehicles.

In the bigger picture, we have set a biofuels target—five percent ethanol in transport fuel by 2010—that will create new markets for traditional crops.

This is the way forward. New products, new uses and new markets for agriculture biomass will position the Canadian agriculture and agri-food sector for long-term sustainability and profitability.

Q. How do you see agriculture as a player in the overall innovation strategy of the federal government, and in advancing the convergence of agriculture with the industrial manufacturing and health sectors?

As the world economy moves to embrace renewable resources as the basis for future growth, it seems clear to me that agriculture will be a major player in this arena.

Canadian farmers manage some 67 million hectares of agricultural land and are well-positioned to improve the management of our soil, water and biological resources.

Agricultural crops and livestock will be the foundation for a renewable, resource-based economy. The expansion of agricultural opportunities beyond food and feed adds a whole new dimension to agriculture and further enhances its role in innovation. And improvements in understanding the link between food, nutrition, health and wellness offers tremendous opportunities for agricultural food products and their ingredients to address health and wellness issues.

Q. Looking beyond biofuels, how do you see Canada's agricultural sector participating in the development of bio-based materials and manufacturing? How will Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada be involved in stimulating these new industries?

Looking to the future, we will increasingly seek to increase scientific collaboration, both nationally and internationally, as greater returns across the innovation value chain and increased economic, social and environmental benefits can be generated.

AAFC has already engaged in collaborative efforts with our partners in the provinces, the universities and the private sector to build the best possible science and innovation teams with complementary skills and the best mix of resources to increase our capacity to undertake research that is increasingly multidisciplinary, collaborative and sophisticated. insights Fall/Automne 2006

Quel rôle Agriculture et Agroalimentaire Canada sera-t-il appelé à jouer dans la stimulation de ces nouvelles industries?

Dans l’avenir, nous chercherons de plus en plus à multiplier les collaborations scientifiques, tant nationales qu’internationales, et un meilleur rendement dans la chaîne de valeur de l’innovation ainsi que de plus grands gains économiques, sociaux et environnementaux pourront être générés.

AAC a déjà entrepris des collaborations avec ses partenaires provinciaux, les universités et le secteur privé afin de former les meilleures équipes possibles en matière de science et d’innovation. Leurs membres, des ressources idéalement variées, auront des compétences complémentaires, ce qui augmentera nos capacités à mener des recherches de plus en plus multidisciplinaires, collaboratives et pointues.
