Bingenheimer Saatgut 2014 – Organic Seeds

Page 2

Dear Gardeners and Farmers,

Retail assortment:

we are very pleased that for the first time in the history of Bingenheimer Saatgut AG, we can send you a copy of our seed catalogue translated into English.

Biodynamic Seed for hobby-gardeners

We were inspired to take this step by the active interest being shown from beyond our borders for open pollinated organic seeds produced for the commercial market gardener. We are delighted that our common commitment to organic vegetable production and organic plant breeding is continuing to grow and becoming more international! Working together gives us a stronger voice as we try to offer alternative solutions to the problems of the seed trade. Seed monopolies, variety patenting, the disappearance of open pollinated varieties, hybridisation techniques and the ongoing negotiations in Europe about breeders rights are all themes we are currently addressing. ra her ltu

A vital step towards ensuring the continued existence of independent seed traders is our work with open pollinated varieties that breed true while at the same time meeting the professional requirements of commercial organic growers.

• Popular assortment of seeds selected for the hobby-gardener. • Descriptions and details given in English, Danish and Dutch. Clear price brackets shown both on the packets and display stand. • Special seed packets displaying a highly descriptive picture of the plant and growing instructions. Distributed in units of 5 seed packets of each variety. • New tasty and disease-resistant varieties for organic cultivation, and traditional ones as well. Over 52 different vegetables, flowers and herbs.

We are also supporting the work of Kultursaat, a charity which both maintains old and well tested varieties and responds to the demands of the orMeeting of the members of the Vegetable Seeds Initiative Group, summer 2013 ganic vegetable market by breeding new varieties based on the criteria of improved flavour and other qualities. These new varieties are registered via Kultursaat and are thereby made freely available to form part of our cultural commons. They become neither the property of private individuals nor plant breeding firms. More than 50 new varieties have now been registered by Kultursaat. They can be recognised in the catalogue with this symbol. Money raised from the so called breeding levy on the sale of Kultursaat varieties flows back into the association to support its further work.

• A nice wooden display unit with 42 hooks. These are made by disabled people in the workshops of the Bingenheim Community. Also available is a small sturdy display strip with 7 hooks, suitable as a secondary display or for the smaller shop. • Our products may be procured from your wholesaler or direct from us. Prices and order form available on request.

Our aim is to offer a comprehensive range of open pollinated varietes of every vegetable species. We still have a long way to go however especially with those species dominated by hybrids. We are fortunate in having a strong network of support and regular meetings to help us achieve our objectives. All our varieties are of course open pollinated. That is vitally important since only those varieties capable of consistently reproducing themselves can stand fully within the stream cultivated plant development - over centuries. 2014 will undoubtedly present both plant breeders and seed multipliers with many new challenges. To meet them in the right way, we ask you to please continue sending your feedback on our seeds, our service and with regard to our common ideals. We would like to warmly thank Bernard Jarman without whose help an English catalogue of this quality would not have been possible. There are many professional translators but hardly any who are at the same as conversant in the field of organic and biodynamic gardening. Wishing everyone a wonderful new growing season
