Greetings and welcome to this year’s commemorative book, celebrating the latest inductees and incumbent members of the BIMA Hall of Fame. We are delighted to, once again, acknowledge the contribution that the people herein have made to the digital industry. This year our two inductees reflect two very popular aspects of modern digital culture - YouTube and Candy Crush Saga... Jamal Edwards started his online music platform at just age 15, giving him a special place in the hearts of all of us who bootstrapped our way into the industry from one-man-in-his-bedroom beginnings. These days, SBTV has a subscriber base of 670,000 and growing, and Jamal has featured on the cover of Wired, had a selfie with the royal princes and starred in adverts alongside Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber.

Where Jamal burst onto the scene with the rise of YouTube, his fellow inductee Riccardo Zacconi grew into the industry from more orthodox business roots. Riccardo’s CV includes influential stints at the likes of Boston Consulting Group and LEK Consulting, before he started making waves in the tech world. As longterm CEO and one of the founders of KING Entertainment, Riccardo needs no introduction, as the phenomenon that is Candy Crush Saga seems virtually ubiquitous nowadays. Jamal and Riccardo were selected by our stellar list of incumbent BIMA Hall of Famers, including the likes of former BIMA Chairman Justin Cooke and Dame Martha Lane Fox, whose profiles are also set out in the following pages. BIMA conceived the BIMA Hall of Fame back in 2012 as a way to honour and celebrate the high flying stars of our

industry, and also to hold up inspirational examples to our nation’s young people – inspiring more of them to come into the industry and have their own go at creating or powering the SBTVs and King Entertainments of the future. Digital Entrepreneur and Founder SBTV @jamaledwards

Jamal Edwards MBE established the online music platform SBTV when he was 15 years old, after he was given a camera as a present by his parents and started filming and uploading videos to YouTube of his friends rapping on the estate in Acton, West London where he grew up. Since 2006, Jamal has grown his youth broadcasting channel, SBTV, from the inner confines of his bedroom into a renowned brand with global reach.

Encapsulating the DIY ethos of the underground music scene that inspired the teen to pick up a camera in the first place, Jamal Edwards was - and still is responsible for documenting the rise of a new breed of previously ignored video stars. Early nods of approval came from Richard Branson and Simon Cowell, but now SBTV, the first new media business on YouTube, can boast a subscriber base of over 670,000 with over 360 million views.

Having gone from building the YouTube channel to curating stages at Bestival and Wireless, from filming on British housing estates to recording interviews from 10 Downing Street to the Bermuda Triangle, Edwards can now boast an expanding business portfolio and a solid reputation that sees him inspiring a new wave of digital entrepreneurs who have adopted his #SelfBelief tactics.

Having gone from working on the shop floor of Topman to being the face of a collaborative range in store with American Freshman, to being awarded an MBE for services to music in 2015, as well as releasing a best selling book and fronting a Google Chrome Advert alongside Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber, and then of course boasting an a-list filled photo collection including a selfie with Prince William and Harry, an image that went from Jamal’s Twitter


to the pages of Vanity Fair and Vogue – it’s fair to call him the millennial’s hero of DIY entrepreneurialism. Becoming something of a regular in royal circles, Jamal was honoured when he became one of the Queen’s Young Leaders, after being called upon to run the first ever social media hub at Buckingham Palace. Achievements like this saw Jamal placed at no. 2 in The Guardian’s top 30 young people in digital media 2014. He’s graced the covers of Intelligent Life, Wired and the Emirates Airline in-flight magazine while also frequenting the pages of publications from GQ, Dazed and Q to Forbes and Time. Not bad for a boy whose content is primarily consumed by teenagers around the world.

Riccardo Zacconi is one of King’s founders and has served on the Board of Directors and as chief executive officer since March 2003. With over 20 years of experience in strategic management, consulting and e-commerce, Riccardo brings exceptional knowledge and expertise to both the social and casual gaming domains. Previously, Riccardo served as vice president of European Sales and Marketing at Ltd., an online dating service, and was involved in driving market penetration and

partnerships until the company was acquired by InterActive Corporation in 2002. Before that, he was managing director for Spray Network GmbH an online portal based in Hamburg with a presence in Germany, France, Italy, Sweden, Denmark and Norway. In this role, Riccardo demonstrated his understanding for developing solid company strategy, intelligent plans for sustainable growth and strategic partnerships, which supported the successful sale of Spray Network to Lycos for $764 million. In addition,


Riccardo has been an entrepreneurin-residence at Benchmark Capital Partners, a Qualified Case Leader at The Boston Consulting Group, Inc. and a consultant at LEK Consulting LLP. He holds a B.A. in Economics from LUISS University, Italy. Riccardo’s favourite King game used to be Jungle Bubble. He’s currently deciding on his new favourite King game.

Founder & CEO AKQA @Ajaz

Ajaz founded AKQA aged 21. Today AKQA employs over 2,000 people across 17 offices worldwide. AKQA is the winner of a Queen’s Award for Enterprise Innovation, the highest accolade bestowed on a UK business. Three years ago, Ajaz co-authored the best-selling business transformation book Velocity. He donated all proceeds to youth homeless, education and

healthcare charities. In Ajaz’s new book Limitless - Leadership That Endures he shares the entrepreneurial stories that influenced him on his journey. All proceeds from Limitless are donated to five charities voted for by employees of AKQA. Since 2012 AKQA has grown by 45%. Ajaz’s thoughts, interviews and essays are available here:

ANDREW FISHER Andrew joined Shazam in 2005, serving as Chief Executive Officer until 2013 when he became Executive Chairman.

Alan Rusbridger was editor of the Guardian for more than 20 years. He was editor-in-chief of Guardian News & Media, a member of the GNM and GMG Boards and a member of the Scott Trust, which owns the Guardian and the Observer.

He worked as a general reporter, feature writer and diary columnist before leaving to succeed Clive James and Julian Barnes as the Observer’s TV critic. He became editor of the Guardian in 1995 and oversaw the integration of the paper and digital operations. The paper was nominated newspaper of the year five times between 1996 and 2006. Rusbridger has been named editor of the year three times.


In 2013, Shazam was awarded the Queen’s Award for Enterprise and selected for The Future Fifty, the UK government’s programme to acknowledge the fastest-growing technology companies in the UK. Executive Chairman Shazam

Andrew joined Shazam from InfoSpace Inc where he was European Managing Director. At InfoSpace Andrew led the company’s significant European growth focusing on music and entertainment services for mobile operators and portal solutions for many leading online service providers. Over the past 20 years, Andrew has led the successful growth of a number of technology-focused enterprises. He founded and was Managing Director of which was acquired by InfoSpace Inc with an enterprise value of $400m, and was General Manager of Thomson Directories Business Ventures. Andrew is a Non-Executive Director of Marks and Spencer PLC and Moneysupermarket Group PLC.

Andrew co-founded i-level, the digital media agency that revolutionised the UK’s internet advertising market. Starting the business in 1999, he built it to over £100m turnover, winning over 50 awards including agency of the year eight times and a Queen’s Award for Enterprise. He was named London Media Entrepreneur of the Year by Ernst and Young in 2006, and given the Chairman’s award by the Association of Online Publishers for outstanding contribution to the industry in 2007, selling the business to private equity in 2008 before moving on to develop interests in other



ventures. For five years until 2011, he wrote a popular weekly column in Marketing magazine, appearing on the Today Programme as well as numerous other TV and radio programmes. He is now an active investor in early stage internet ventures, sitting on the board of several companies, as well as the Eden Project in Cornwall. Most recently, as chairman of Fetch, he helped the founders structure and grow the business to a reported £30m exit to the global media group Dentsu Aegis.


Andy established the first international Internet agency in 1994 which merged with pioneering digital services firm in 1997 where he was European MD then Chairman until 2009.

He has been a weekly columnist about the new economy for the Financial Times, a member of GartnerG2’s first advisory board on online advertising and has spoken at numerous conferences including TED.

Andy co-founded the award-winning online community Do The Green Thing in 2007. He has been listed among the 100 top digital influencers by Wired UK, and was named among the 20 inaugural inductees of the BIMA Hall of Fame.

Andy is also a trustee of sustainability non-profit Forum for the Future and sits on advisory boards for Tate Britain and Rapha Racing Ltd. He has yet to receive any royalties from obscure pop songs released by a minor independent record label in Europe.

HELEN MILNER Helen is the Chief Executive of Tinder Foundation, a social enterprise and staff-owned mutual. She is passionate about the benefits to individuals that digital technologies bring. Her priorities are to make good things happen through digital technologies. She works in partnership to build capacity in local communities so people get the capability they need to enjoy all the wonders of the web and ‘digital by default’ service delivery, and in the four years 2010 - 2014 her organisation and hyper-local partners helped over 1.2 million people to do just that.

Helen has over 30 years experience of working on the internet, starting in 1985 in the private sector with TTNS, developing internet education content and services for children and schools.


BARONESS JOANNA SHIELDS Baroness Joanna Shields is a British/ American technology industry veteran and parliamentarian currently serving as the United Kingdom’s Minister for Internet Safety & Security. Shields started working in digital technology in 1986 and has spent over 25 years between Silicon Valley & London. She has been instrumental in helping to build some of the world’s best-known technology companies including, Google, AoL and Facebook. Shields also led startups to successful acquisitions, including Bebo to AoL, Decru to NetApp and Veon to Philips. She has served on several boards including the London Stock Exchange Group and Save the Children.

She worked in online education in Australia and Japan in the late 1980s/ early 1990s, and Helen ran the ippr and University of Sunderland ‘university for industry’ pilot in the late 90s. In 2014 and 2015, she was a Commissioner for the House of Commons Speaker’s Commission for Digital Democracy. The same year Helen was awarded an OBE for Services to Digital Inclusion in the Queen’s Birthday Honours. This year Helen is the International Thought Leader for the Queensland Government for the Australian National Year of Digital Inclusion. Helen’s ambition is to ensure that everybody in the UK (and the rest of the world), no matter what their income or background, has the skills and resources to use and participate in the web.

In 2012, Shields was asked by Prime Minister David Cameron to help build the UK’s digital economy as CEO & Chair of TechCityUK. She later became the Prime Minister’s Digital Advisor

and served in that post until her appointment as a Government Minister following the 2015 general election. During her tenure, Shields led the UK/ US technology task force in the fight to combat online abuse and exploitation. She started WeProtect, a global alliance that now includes over 60 countries and law enforcement agencies, NGOs, civil society organisations and technology leaders aimed at developing technology solutions, national response systems and global cooperation to eradicate child abuse and exploitation from the internet and to bring perpetrators to justice. Her current ministerial role extends to combating online extremism and fighting radicalisation and hate speech, as well as continuing the fight to curb online child abuse, exploitation and promoting safe, open access to the internet for everyone.

Chief Design Officer Apple Inc

London-born designer Jonathan Ive is Apple’s Chief Design Officer, reporting to CEO Tim Cook. Since 1996, he has been responsible for leading a design team widely regarded as one of the world’s best. As the driving force behind the look and feel of Apple’s innovative products, Jony also provides leadership and direction for Human Interface (HI) software teams across the company.

Recognised with numerous design awards, Apple products are featured in the permanent collections of museums worldwide, including MoMA in New York and the Pompidou in Paris. Jony holds a Bachelor of Arts and an honorary doctorate from Newcastle Polytechnic. In 2003, he was named Designer of the Year by the Design Museum London and awarded the title Royal Designer for Industry by The Royal Society of Arts.


JUSTIN COOKE Justin is a Venture Partner at VC investor Northzone, a Non-Executive Director of FutureLearn, one of the world’s largest Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) Platforms, Chairman of Big Clever Learning and a member of the Digital Advisory Board’s for No. 10 Downing Street and The British Museum. Prior to Northzone, he was the CEO and Founder of POSSIBLE UK, WPP Digital’s largest global agency. Justin is also the former Chair and now an Ambassador of BIMA.

Justin discovered digital media while studying Quasi-Theatrical Leisure and Computers as Theatre while studying Drama at the University of Manchester. After graduating with honours, he worked for the BBC, Universal Music and United News and Media before he Co-founded global digital agency Fortune Cookie in 1997. Justin secured

venture capital funding, grew the business to 200 people and $25m of revenue before selling to WPP in 2012. For two years, Justin served on the Board of EPiServer – the world’s fastest growing content management and community platform until its sale to investment bank, IK Partners. In September 2012, he was invited onto the Digital Advisory Board of the British Museum and was recently appointed by the British Government as a Digital Capabilities Reviewer. Wired Magazine listed Justin in its Top 100 survey of Britain’s experienced digital power-brokers. Econsultancy ranked him the second most influential person in UK digital, and in 2013 Justin was inducted into the BIMA Hall of Fame.

Kate’s unique experience lies in building successful European operations from the ground up, for the world’s largest and most successful digital brands. With nearly two decades of experience, Kate was appointed General Manager, Europe at Buzzfeed in March 2015.

In 2001, Kate joined Google as its first international employee, building its European operation from scratch and eventually managing Region 1 as Director, UK, Ireland and Benelux. Kate is an active commentator on the digital sector across conferences, TV, Press and Radio. She is also a keen horsewoman, show jumping at a national level.

Prior to taking up this role at the start of 2013, Taylor was Global Chief Executive of publicly listed LBi, where he implemented a series of successive strategic transformations to ensure that the agency thrived in the rapidly evolving digital ecosystem.

Following his appointment as LBi Chief Executive in 2008, Taylor installed a new global management team and implemented a single vision, single

brand, consistent service model and shared organisational design across LBi’s global footprint. He also oversaw the acquisition of bigmouthmedia in 2010 and MRY in 2011, as well as LBi’s recent $540m integration into Publicis Groupe and the subsequent merger with Digitas to form DigitasLBi. Luke is also the Chair of Board of Trustees for YouthNet and Getconnected, the UKs largest youth charity helping over a million per year between ages of 15 and 25, and holds a Masters Degree in English from Oxford University.

Mark has been appointed CEO of mySociety, the global pioneers of civic technology, who invent and popularise new digital tools that enable citizens to exert power over institutions and decision makers. Most recently, Mark was Director of Consulting at BERG, the Shoreditch based connected products company that brought the world Little Printer were he helped in the transition from design studio to funded tech startup working on BERG Cloud Chief Executive mySociety @markcridge

He has worked in digital since 1995 when he left the world of architecture, realising that it just wasn’t his cup of tea. After stints as an art director at



agencies in Birmingham and London, he founded his own agency glue London in 1999; the UK’s original digital advertising agency. In 2010, he became Global Managing Director of Aegis Media’s global creative network Isobar, comprising 3,000 people in 34 markets, working with an enviable client list including adidas, Coca Cola, Kellogg’s, P&G, The Guardian and Google. A regular speaker at industry events he has sat on numerous awards juries, was cited by Campaign Magazine as a ‘Face to Watch’ way back in 2000, featured in the FT Creative Business 50 and became an IPA Fellow in 2010.

Martha Lane Fox co-founded Europe’s largest travel and leisure website with Brent Hoberman in 1998, they took it public in 2000 and sold it in 2005.

Martha was appointed a crossbench peer in the House of Lords in March 2013. She is currently chair of Go On UK, a coalition of public and private sector partners that are helping millions more people and organisations online. In March 2014 she was appointed Chancellor of the Open

University. Martha co-founded and chairs Lucky Voice, revolutionising the karaoke industry. She chairs MakieLab and Founders Forum for Good. She is a Non-Executive Director at Marks & Spencer and the Women’s Prize for Fiction. In 2007 Martha founded her own charitable foundation uk and also serves as a Patron of AbilityNet, Reprieve, Camfed and Just for Kids Law. In 2013 Martha was awarded a CBE.

SIR MARTIN SORRELL Sir Martin Sorrell is the entrepreneurial founder/CEO of WPP plc, the world’s largest provider of advertising and marketing communications services. A FTSE 100 company, WPP currently has a market capitalisation of £18 billion.


Collectively, WPP employs nearly 190,000 people (including associates and investments) in over 3,000 offices in 112 countries. The Group’s worldwide companies include J Walter Thompson, Ogilvy & Mather, Y&R, Grey, GroupM, Mindshare, MEC, MediaCom, Maxus, Kantar (including Millward Brown and TNS), OgilvyOne Worldwide, Wunderman, BursonMarsteller, Hill+Knowlton Strategies, Landor, Brand Union, AKQA and WPP Digital (including POSSIBLE). Matt heads up Google’s business and operations in Europe, the Middle East and Africa - helping consumers and businesses make the most of the digital opportunity. Joining Google in 2007 to help build its business in the UK, he became MD of Google UK two years later. In 2011, he was promoted to VP of Northern and Central Europe, before taking over as President of Business and Operations in EMEA in 2014.

Matt is a non-executive director of Sainsbury’s, and a Trustee of charities The Climate Group and The Media Trust. Matt has had a long career in media and marketing, joining Google from the newspaper industry, where he led commercial

and digital operations at the biggest UK publisher. He previously worked at management consultancy McKinsey. He has an MBA from London Business School, an MA from Cambridge and won silver medals for Cambridge in several boat races. He was also a member of the British rowing team and has won medals in eights and fours at the World Rowing Championships and represented Great Britain at the Olympics. In 2014, he was appointed a Steward of Henley Royal Regatta and he still rows regularly, though more slowly. Matt lives in London, near the Thames, with his wife, teenage sons and a small dog.

Dr Mike Lynch, OBE, FREng FRS is the former founder of Autonomy and has a proven track record of identifying and monetising fundamental technologies. Dr Lynch founded Autonomy in 1996, the UK’s largest and fastest growing software company, with a market capitalisation of $11bn, and was its CEO for fifteen years. Autonomy was acquired by HP in 2011.

“I first joined commercial online services like Prestel, Compuserve and America Online in the late 80s and then the internet proper through Demon, the UK’s first ISP. I was instantly struck amidships by the possibilities of this astounding new way of communicating around the globe. I had an email address but none of my friends did; only fellow geeks around the world with whom one would share interslip and PPP scripts. Then Tim Berners-Lee wrote his protocols and Mosaic and the first web browsers arrived. Within what seemed a blink of the eye nothing was the same again.”

Berners Lee is a British computer scientist who invented the World Wide Web. Timothy John Berners Lee was born on 8 June 1955 and grew up in London. He studied physics at Oxford University and became a software engineer. In 1980, while working at CERN, the European Particle Physics Laboratory in Geneva, he first described the concept of a global system, based on the concept of ‘hypertext’, that would allow researchers anywhere to share information. In 1989, Berners Lee published a paper called ‘Information Management: A Proposal’ in which he married up hypertext with the Internet, to create a system for sharing and distributing

information not just within a company, but globally. He named it the World Wide Web. He also created the first web browser and editor. The world’s first website,, was launched on 6 August 1991. It explained the World Wide Web concept and gave users an introduction to getting started with their own websites. In 1994, Berners Lee founded the World Wide Web Consortium at the Laboratory of Computer Science (LCS) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston. He has served as director of the consortium since then. He also works as a senior research scientist at LCS which has now become the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory.

Creative Director and co-founder of The Rumpus Room, Tomas Roope has been a leading digital practitioner since 1994. In 1995 he co-founded Anitrom, a company which was awarded “The most Outstanding Contribution to Digital Culture” during Internet Week’s Digital Archaeology 2010 (EU) and 2011 (US).

Antirom continued until 1999 when Tom went on to co-found the also highly acclaimed ‘Tomato Interactive’. He has taught at several universities including product design at the Royal College of Art, and produced installations for several exhibitions internationally.



In 2012 Tom was presented the award of Honorary Royal Designer for Industry by the Royal Society of Arts, in recognition of his “Innovative work in taking computer interactions beyond the desktop and into communities and shared spaces” - Matthew Taylor, Chief Executive of the RSA. The Rumpus Room was founded in 2007 to harness the power of people building experiences together and align this activity with brand communication. Tom’s work at The Rumpus Room has been integral in the company being recognised with some of the highest accolades, by award bodies including D&AD, Cannes, One Show, Brit Insurance Design of the Year and Campaign Media Awards.

Warren East was chief executive officer for ARM Holdings plc from October 2001 to July 2013. ARM, a constituent of the FTSE 100, is the world’s leading Semiconductor IP licensing company with over 360 licencees worldwide collectively shipping over 10 billion ARM chips per year. He served with Texas Instruments for 11 years before joining ARM in 1994.

Warren is a Chartered Engineer, a Companion of the Chartered Management Institute and a Fellow of both the Institution of Engineering and Technology and the Royal Academy of Engineering. He is also a Distinguished Fellow of the British Computer Society.

Warren holds a master’s degree in Engineering Science from the University of Oxford, and an Honorary Doctorate from Cranfield University. He is senior non-executive director and chairman of the audit committee of De La Rue plc, and a non executive director of Micron inc, Dyson Limited, BT plc and Rolls Royce plc. He chairs the ESCO (Electronic Systems Community) Council and Leadership Forum and is on the board of the Connected Digital Economy Catapult. He is a member of several advisory boards. He was awarded a CBE in the 2014 New Year Honours list.

WAYNE ARNOLD Having co-founded Profero with his brother in 1998, Wayne is regarded as one of the industry’s most respected and experienced practitioners. He has successfully supervised local and global campaigns for an enviable client list including Apple, Diageo, Unilever and Western Union. Wayne expanded the Profero client and geographical base by carefully positioning Profero as the only global independent digital agency of its kind, covering media, creative and technology, with offices across 10 cities in US, Europe and Asia.
