EXPERIENTIAL DESIGNER

Billy Bell is an experience designer as well as an internationally acclaimed dancer and choreographer.

Most recently, he has been on tour with Hugh Jackman for his arena show “The Man, The Music, The Show” and can be seen in the upcoming film In The Heights produced by Lin Manuel Miranda and directed by Jon Chu. A former cast member of Punchdrunk’s “Sleep No More,” Billy’s past experiences include dancing with Jose Navas/Compagnie Flak and Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet. Billy is a recipient of the Frank Prize for Emerging Artists and an Award of Choreographic Excellence by Capezio. He is also well established in the commercial dance scene having been on FOX’s So You Think You Can Dance, after which he had the opportunity to work with the likes of Britney Spears, the original cast of RENT, and the talented cast and crew of FOX’s HOUSE M.D. As a Project Designer at WET, an environmental architecture firm based in Los Angeles, CA, he has created the new Aquanura show at Efteling, worked on notable landmarks including The Fountains of Bellagio in collaboration with Universal NBC and The Dubai Fountain for the 2020 and 2021 New Year’s Eve celebration seen by millions around the globe.

With his own company, Cinereal Productions, he has worked on large-scale projects including Hotel Wonderland (Amsterdam, NL), Club Babalu (Los Angeles, CA), The Acey Deucey Club (San Diego, CA), The Unbrunch (New York, NY), as well as intimate experiences for private and corporate clientele.

Hotel Wonderland is a new immersive experience the blends interactive installations, cutting edge technology, and live immersive theater. Visitors arrive at Hotel Wonderland, a realm that exists outside of our reality, and have the opportunity to explore over 40 different installations, dine at various food and beverage points, and follow the 12 fully-scripted Resident characters.

Client : FeverUp | San Diego, CA Year : 2022 The Acey Deucey Club is an immersive tiki-bar experience set inside of a Cold War-era submarine. Guests join the Captain and Crew of the USS Clusterwink as they take the first ever pedestrian submarine cruise in August 1948! Quirky tiki drinks and live entertainment is provided on board by the Crew. All is well until the threat of a potential spy on board locks the submarine down until the culprit is found...

04. CHIMERA

Client : The Norwood Club | New York, NY Year : 2017-2018

CHIMERA is an immersive theater series created for The Norwood Club and was an exclusive

offering for their members. A unique partnership was formed between Cinereal Productions and The Norwood Club to curate a series of dinner party experiences in an anathological format. A web of interconnected characters told guests the story of the Norwood house, a historic landmark building in the heart of the famed Chelsea neighbourhood.

Guests were invited into the house where they would be led throughout a series of spaces for a traveling cocktail party before being led into a main dining space. Executive Chef Carlene Nelson worked with Cinereal Productions in creating a menu that integrated the themes and tone of the stories told.

During the course of the meal actors would interact with guests. Occasionally, small groups would be pulled away from their table and led into secret corridors hidden within the walls of the house to be told secrets and given treats in the form of bespoke craft cocktails.

06. Hand Of Mystery

Client : Private Client | New York, NY Year : 2017 Hand Of Mystery is a bespoke experience that was created at the request of a private client to celebrate her 60th birthday. Transformation, enlightenment, and reflection were themes explored throughout the evening. The story was a dive into the world of the unknown as guests were led into an underground tunnel and into an undisclosed location where they were inducted into a secret society.

In my teaching, I often describe dancers as having the superpower of movement. They have a unique ability to walk into a space and without knowing a person, or even acknowledging them directly, evoke emotion. They can make a complete stranger dream of another world, back them up during a duel, cry for their losses and cheer for their wins— all with the gesture of an arm.

Architecture and design have a similar superpower. A castle wall intimidates enemies and pushes them to surround the compound. A swanky hotel lounge comforts travellers tucking them into plush chairs and softening their postures. Corporate offices keep workers alert with bright lighting and clear sight lines fostering buzzing collaboration and efficiency.

Everyone is born through movement and thrust into a kinetic world. Architecture is the framework that guides the movement of the world allowing form and order to come to fruition. Buildings and urban organization literally choreograph the ballet of society. In many ways, I feel as though I haven’t transitioned careers at all. I’m still a choreographer, just on a much bigger scale.

Immersive environments have two key design classifications-- macro and micro design. In a theatrical sense, macro design is the show or experience at large. This encompasses processes like space planning, audience circulation, and overall narrative of space. In micro design, smaller details are addressed such as decor, lighting, materiality, and texture.

My approach to Interior Architecture is the same as my approach to immersive design. By beginning with an approach to macro design, the framework of space is laid out and the design slowly takes shape. As design development carries on, micro design starts to shade in the skeleton with rich tones and a sense of place.

02. The Iron Works District Macon, Ga

Client : Historic Macon Foundation, Alamo Drafthouse Year : 2018

The Iron Works District was created by request of the Historic Macon Foundation, to re-imagine an entire city-block of Macon, GA into a mixed-used facility. The newly developed complex would include themed restaurants, bars,

BEFORE

The existing Schofield Iron Works Building was completely decimated.

Most of the roofs were missing and there was a lot of damage from the

30+ years of being in disuse. Through reviewing historic documents and drawings, it was discovered that the original facade of the building was covered up which resulted in a deep antechamber. This proposal suggests embracing the adaptive reuse of the building. Tearing away at the existing facade and replacing it with a glass curtain wall system creates a ghosted image of the buildings face while simultaneously revealing the original building front behind. The new space would become a luxury bar that would allow guests to stand somewhere between the past and the present.

03. Discover Hidden Worlds Hilton Head, SC

Client : Amazon Books Year : 2017

Discover Hidden Worlds is a concept design for

an Amazon Books retail location in Hilton Head Island, SC. Books act as portals to alternate worlds where surroundings have gone awry from the everyday norm. Places of magic and wonder, curiosity and surprise, even fantasy and whimsy are just the crack of a cover away. An abstraction of this idea could be seen as the passing through of a plane to reveal a field of paths. Each path leads to a new discovery, unique in its own right, but inevitably tied to the reality in which it contrasts. Every path leads to a space that has a narrative separate from the next.

The dichotomy of reality askew is the driving inspiration to Discover Hidden Worlds with Amazon Books.

01. New Age Drive-In Theater Year

: 2020

This drive-in theater concept aims to redefine our movie-viewing experience in a socially distant society. Guests drive their own vehicles into a cantilevered ring and park into individual stalls.

These stalls are on hydraulic lifts that would be choreographed to compliment the film being shown.

The ring structure would also serve as space for private box seating, rest rooms, and equipment storage. A kitchen would be located under the higher end of the viewing stalls. This allows for a luxury concession system that could be ordered through an app on guests’ smart phones.

Hyperreal Immersive Sound systems and programmable ambient lighting could be incorporated along the inner side of the ring to help create the most immersive viewing experience possible. The screen could in theory expand up to 360 degrees.

The God Complex is a cutting edge, dancetheater psychological-thriller that fully immerses its audience into an interactive narrative. Originally composed as a ballet, Boléro

premiered in 1928. This piece epitomizes Ravel’s preoccupation with restyling and reinventing dance movements. The work was created after Ravel dreamt up the simple melody on a piano.

After playing it to a friend he asked, “Do you think this theme has an insistent quality? I’m going to try and repeat it a number of times without any development, gradually increasing and decreasing the orchestras as best as I can.”

Mimicking the works intention for dance, this pavilion was created to move guests through space in a rise-and-fall manner. The design was segmented into 18 sections, each being assigned one of the 18 bars of music repeated as Boléro’s melody. The elevation of the terrain was dictated by the movement of the notes on the original score.
