STEALING THE
LIMELIGHT The world is full of extraordinary women who are inspiring, creative, daring and powerful, all while embracing femininity in their own unique way. Women appreciate craftsmanship, talent and creativity. They invest in what can be passed down and what can create an emotion. The new Limelight Gala Collection by Piaget was inspired by an iconic model created in 1973 when the brand’s famous Piaget Society was in full swing. Celebrities, artists, clients, and friends of the Maison would get together for the most fabulous parties, gathering stars such as Salvador Dali, Jackie Kennedy, Elizabeth Taylor, Andy Warhol, Cary Grant and Sami Davis Jr. As vibrant today as it was in the 1970s, Piaget’s Limelight Gala was inspired by the elegant spirit of the 1960s, with its sensual curves, cambered case and asymmetrical lugs that extend from each side of the case onto the bracelet. The modern interpretation of the Limelight Gala reproduces the same design with a perfectly integrated case and lugs that are combined with a swirl of exquisite gemstones, ornate dials, and sumptuous gold bracelets. This year, Piaget is presenting a host of new Limelight Gala timepieces in celebration of these iconic creations that dates back to more than half a century. Each piece follows Piaget’s four pillars of excellence: The Art of Movement, The Art of Gold, The Art of Colour and The Art of Light
Almost 60 years on and the Piaget Limelight Gala is more than a wristwatch, it is a feminine icon that has become a symbol of elegance and harmony

THE ART of GoLd Shimmering in the light, this new Piaget Limelight Gala Precious Sapphire Gradient (Ref. G0A45163) celebrates the signature design of the Limelight Gala collection with a hand-engraved gold bracelet and dial that are highlighted by 20 large diamonds (approx. 1.46 cts) and 22 blue sapphires (approx. 4.01 cts) set in a subtle gradient of blue. Piaget is one of the few remaining Maisons that has the savoir-faire to make hand-made gold bracelets. This rare traditional craft started in the 1960s and became hugely popular thanks to Piaget’s bold creations. Mainly inspired by nature, Piaget has used over one hundred different lifelike motifs to craft its hand-made gold bracelets, such as leather design, ocean waves, frost, flowers, foliage, bark, snake scales and many more. The work of a chainsmith is similar to that of a HauteCouture dressmaker. The artisan will start with hundreds of gold links, which will be tightly assembled. The next step is the soldering of the countless miniature links that will result in a bracelet of remarkable suppleness. The white gold bracelet featured on this new timepiece has been created in this fashion, then hand-engraved in the Palace Décor style, one of Piaget’s most iconic motifs, which requires eight hours of work. Only a few artisans, who work in Piaget’s “Workshop of Extraordinary Creations”, have the expertise to hand-engrave this pattern. The dial is also made of white gold and is engraved using the same Palace Décor technique. It takes two hours to complete the engraving on the dial and it is always carried out by the same engraver who decorates the bracelet to ensure a uniform design. To let the Décor shine through, the dial is covered in translucent blue enamel. It is ovenfired multiple times at a temperature over 800°C, giving this technique the name of “Grand Feu” Enamel. Finding the perfect colour gemstones for this timepiece was also one of the most challenging operations. It involved sampling large quantities of gemstones to ensure the perfect colour match, a task made even more complex given the large progressive size of the stones and the high gem quality standards of the Maison. To magnify the brilliance of the stones, Piaget’s gem-setters have expertly set the gemstones by hand, using the Serti Descendu technique. This timepiece is so unique that it is a numbered edition. There is also a similar version (Ref. G0A45363) with a mother-of-pearl dial and a dark-blue alligator strap, limited to 88 pieces.
14 LUXURY LIVING
THE ART of LIGHT Recognised for its daring vision and incredible savoir-faire, Piaget is one of the world’s most prestigious watchmakers/ jewellers. For over 140 years, the Maison’s artisans have been creating high-jewellery masterpieces by combining precious metals with flawless gemstones and innovative design. A new rose gold version, (Ref. G0A45161) also using the Serti Descendu technique to set the 57 diamonds (approx. 4.80 cts), is available with a burgundy-coloured strap and a delicate mother-of-pearl dial of exceptional quality. It is extremely white in colour, with beautiful reflections, which attests of its high quality. Three new Haute-Joaillerie Limelight Gala timepieces join the collection this year with stunning oval dials paved with snow-set diamonds, and a captivating setting of marquise-cut gemstones on the bezel, lugs and bracelet. The marquise cut is an important part of Piaget’s history. As legend has it, France’s King Louis XV asked to cut a diamond in honour of the smile of his beloved Marquise de Pompadour. The resulting diamond let the light shine in from the very centre of the gemstone, giving it a unique radiance. This unique cut became a signature for the Maison. The three new High Jewellery timepieces come in a 28 by 23mm case. One model adorned with a fully-paved bracelet set with 364 brilliant- and marquise-cut diamonds (approx. 12.42 cts, Ref. G0A45170), a second one set with both diamonds and blue sapphires (Ref. G0A45171), and the third one set with 237 diamonds and fitted with an elegant blue satin strap (Ref. G0A45168).

THE ART of CoLoUR Three new aventurine glass models join the Limelight Gala collection, showcasing the brand’s love for the celestial sky above our heads. Each dial is crafted from aventurine glass, a magical material that takes its name from the Italian word avventura, meaning “adventure. Aventurine dates back to the 17th century with some of the first records coming from Murano, Venice, a town famous for its glass making. The process consists of adding copper oxide to glass to give it a mesmerising twinkle that mirrors the starry night sky. There are two Limelight Gala Aventurine Glass Dial: a 32mm case (Ref. G0A45162) adorned with 63 diamonds (approx. 1.76 ct) and a smaller 26mm case version (Ref. G0A45152) with 61 diamonds (approx. 0.92 ct), both limited to 300 pieces each. Another model, the Limelight Gala Precious Aventurine Glass Dial (Ref. G0A45180), is set with 57 diamonds (approx. 4.80 cts) using the Serti Descendu technique and limited to 200 pieces. 17

PIAGET LIMELIGHT GALA HIGH JEWELLERY BLACK oPAL This stunning one-of-a-kind highjewellery creation (Ref. G0A45007) features a dial fitted with a rare and precious black opal. Black opals are fascinating as they reflect a myriad of bright colours when they catch the light, such as yellow, green, blue, orange and red. The colours depend on the structure of the stone, and also the angle and brightness of the light, frequently changing before our eyes. Black opals are only found in Australia and Ethiopia, making them particularly rare. Australian black opals were first found in the 19th century, where Ethiopian stones were only discovered around 15 years ago. In the present case from Australia, Piaget kept this rare and extraordinary opal for five years and waited for the perfect creation to host it. The Limelight Gala High Jewellery Black Opal highlights its black opal with the addition of 86 brilliant-cut blue sapphires (approx. 5.51 cts) and a colourful array of marquise-cut coloured gemstones that start with 58 sapphires (approx. 6.23 cts), first yellow followed with orange and 14 pink rubies (approx. 1.41 cts) in a progressive gradient of colours to create a jewel that celebrates the best of the Earth’s treasures.

STILL FABULOUS AT

She has graced the covers of fashion magazines for decades, has been a muse to countless designers and has broken down racial barriers within the world of fashion an industry famed for being notoriously treacherous to models of colour her name is the one and only Naomi Campbell
23
LUXURY LIVING FASHION u
They said she wouldn’t last yet here we are more than thirty five years after she was first discovered and Naomi is still as in demand now as she always has been instantly recognizable as one of the world’s most
beautifully woman, her luminous chocolate skin, lush pout, smouldering eyes and legs that seemed to go on forever have proved irresistible to advertisers, editors and, most importantly fashion designers.
A muse to the legendary Gianni Versace, Azzedine Alaïa, Yves Saint Laurent, Alexander McQueen and Karl Lagerfeld, Naomi became the first black women to appear on the cover of French Vogue and the
first British black model to appear on the cover of British Vogue. A member of the original “supermodel” pack alongside the other “supers” Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, and Tatjana
Patitz, women who dominated the world of fashion and the cultural imagination more than any models
before or since. This is never more evident than when in 1993 as she walked the runway for Vivienne Westwood she fell, with media lightbulbs flashing to capture the moment Naomi can be seen bashfully
smiling at being beaten by a pair of towering platforms something unheard off as models today would be heavily chastised for and even sacked!
24 LUXURY LIVING
But beloved as she was by the fashion luvvies, this stunning supermodel soon developed a name forherself as being somewhat of a “diva”. In 1993 she was fired from her agency, Elite Model Management, for reportedly abusing staff and clients. Then in 2000 things took an uglier turn with Campbell pleading guilty to assaulting her personal assistant after throwing a phone at her, which she blamed on anger issues brought on from her addiction to cocaine, something she had remedied with a stint in rehab. But the scandals didn’t end there, in 2007, she was found guilty of assaulting a former housekeeper and dragged through the media and in 2010 she became embroiled in a well-publicised war crimes trial against former Liberian leader Charles Taylor after she accepted a gift of “blood diamonds” from him which she thought were just “dirty rocks”. Naomi’s love life has also been just as tumultuous, but the truth of the matter is that there are not many who have tamed this mannequin’s heart. She has been linked to Spaniard Joaquín Cortés, the actor Leonardo Di Caprio, boxer Mike Tyson, Adam Clayton, musician Eric Clapton, Formula 1 supremo Flavio Briatore, actors Robert de Niro and Sylvester Stallone, Russian billionaire Vladislav Doronin and most recently former One Direction singer, Liam Payne who is 25years her junior and while a man has not managed captured this wild beauties heart one thing that does holds dear is her commitment to charity and fundraising work which surprisingly given all the column inches that Naomi has filled over the decades is something very few know about. Naomi’s notable charity work began in 2005, when she founded the charity We Love Brazil, which sells fabrics made by local women to fight poverty in Brazil, then in 2005, she founded Fashion for Relief, which raised over $1 million for Hurricane Katrina victims, and has provided millions of dollars for other victims around the world, like those of the Haiti and Japan earthquakes in 2010 and 2011. An avid supporter and promoter for the African community, Naomi’s most recent work has focused on bringing Africa to the forefront of the global fashion scene, and promoting the use of African textiles, fabrics and craftsmanship And now as she enters into her fifth decade, what does the future hold for this hardworking Londoner who is work a staggering $90million, well we can be assured that she won’t retire from fashion having publically proclaiming back in 2016 that she despises the word ‘retire’ and there’s no plan’s yet.
Well that’s a relief! 25

THE KING OF
ITALIAN FOOTWEAR
Beloved by many Sergio Rossi, the famous shoemaker and international icon has died from complications of COVID-19 at age 84
27
LUXURY LIVING FASHION u
Rossi’s women’s shoes are a unique example of Italian craftsmanship and ultra-femininity
The celebrated figure died on April 2 shortly after being hospitalised for the illness due to complica-
tions derived from this virus in Cesena, Italy. Born in San Mauro Pascoli, Italy, in 1935 his story is the story of a passion that started, like many artists of his generation, in a country depressed after the Second World War.
Learning the art of the shoemaking from his father a locally renowned shoemaker who worked with his brother Franco by the age of 14 Sergio had already established himself as a skilled craftsman and
enjoyed selling his hand-made sandals on the beaches of Romagna. By his early 20s, he had already taken over his father’s business.
It was in 1968 when he launched his namesake brand that his road to becoming a fashion legend began. His shoes were celebrated for their geometric patterns, their bright colours, and the slavish
care with which they were produced: famously, each shoe took 14 hours—and an epic 120 stages—to make. Amongst the most famous shoe models designed by Sergio are the Opanca sandal (launched in 1966) with the round sole and straps that wraps the foot and the more classic, Godita stiletto pump
and high heel and the chunky-heeled, more practical Virginia but it was his collaboration during the 1970’s with Gianni Versace that finally cemented his foothold as the “King of Italian footwear.” Their union, now famous, was immediately greeted with great enthusiasm by the world of fashion a union between two of Italy’s fashion geniuses, one dressmaker and one shoemaker a perfect pairing.
28 LUXURY LIVING
Building on this success, by the 1990’s Sergio has continued to align himself with some of the most prominent names in fashion producing shoes for the Dolce & Gabbana collections (from 1989 to 1999) Azzedine Alaïa and Gucci and in doing so had became synonymous with style and luxury, while also benefitting from free advertising with one of the most notably campaigns captured by famous photographer Helmut Newton who emphasising dramatic angles from below to emphasize the long lines of the body insisted on the importance of the heel.
29
LUXURY LIVING FASHION u
In 1999, the Sergio Rossi brand was sold to the Gucci Group, now known as Kering, one of the world’s biggest luxury fashion conglomerates, before being sold by Kering to European investment house Investindustrial in 2015. Prior to his passing, Rossi had donated €100,000 to the Sacco hospital in Milan to help in the fight against coronavirus Sergio Rossi’s legacy will always be remembers as a creator of elegant footwear that brought beauty, femininity and sensuality to women and over his long career his shoes have worn by some of Hollywoods most elite with starlet such as Sharon Stone to Diane Kruger, Anne Hathaway, Nicole Kidman, Sarah Jessica Parker, Halle Barry and Cate Blanchett all wearing his stunning creations. 30 LUXURY LIVING

SEVEN EXCEPTIONAL WATCHES
ONE LUXURIOUS NAME
The new Mademoiselle Prive Bouton collection by Chanel pays homage to Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel ‘s most favourite fashion accessory and the objects with which she loved to surround herself
Crafted by the greatest artisans, this collection constitutes an exclusive realm of expression for the finest forms of craftsmanship: Watchmaking, High Jewelry, and other Artistic Crafts from the world of Couture consisting of seven watches, including two exceptional pieces of fine jewelry. Inspired by the military wardrobe or even the sailor uniform, Gabrielle Chanel paid particular attention to the patterns on the buttons, which presented a very wide variety of ornaments. Much more than a simple tie, it punctuated its tailors with preciousness, becoming a distinctive sign of the Chanel allure. As Gabrielle Chanel used to say “there can be no buttons without buttonholes”, and here, the button preserves its opening function. Highlighted with a bronze-coloured leather strap, the black tweed cuff of the Mademoiselle Bouton Privé watch folds back and seals on the wrist with a button, revealing a small dial set with 316 diamonds. A pearl, a lion in sculpted gold, a camellia of diamonds, a Byzantine motif or even Gabrielle Chanel’s agate profile make up this very elegant collection. These elements illustrate the richness of the House’s symbols and its exceptional know-how.

2020
As COVID 19 continues to wreak havoc around the world, luxury events and fairs have had to think of alternative ways to hold their events and the organizers of Geneva’s exclusive Watches & Wonders luxury fair (formerly Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie), held a virtual event instead. What is usually an extremely high-brow event which only a select few have access to, the new online platform and virtual event has in fact managed to open up access to a much larger audience ensuring that the approx. 30 brands who would have been exhibiting can still reach showcasing their stunning creations.
Here we highlight our top picks...

ROGER DUBUIS EXCALIBUR DIABOLUS IN MACHINA Everyone knows that the devil is in the details and because creative irreverence is a temptation that Roger Dubuis finds irresistible, Excalibur Diabolus in Machina pushes sophistication to breaking point. Roger Dubuis has chosen to tune its minute repeater to the sound of the tritone, the famous “Diabolus in Musica” chord outlawed in medieval religious music, the secret key to all clever and complex melodic harmony.
The watch also packs a minute repeater, a flying tourbillon, and a host of other mechanical and design elements. The minute repeater horological complication allows the wearer to check the time using a pushpiece that activates a ring tone with a low pitch for the hours, a high pitch for the minutes, and two tones for the quarter hours. At 11 o’clock is a disc that has been skilfully blended with a Roman numeral. Marked with the words Hours, Quarters and Minutes, the disc starts to turn as soon as the minute repeater is activated, visually showing the time intervals being chimed. To achieve this, the watchmakers have enriched this second visual indication with the minute repeater’s main feeler-spindle system, which requires mechanically seeking information on the time before striking it - A unique piece. CARTIER PASHA DE CARTIER SKELETON Pasha de Cartier has been a cult watch since its creation in 1985. An extroverted watch embracing an assertive graphic signature: a square in the circle of its dial, four bold and oversized Arabic numerals, a chained crown and a bracelet accentuated by the clous de Paris. With its distinctive codes and design, the new Pasha de Cartier watch is classic yet contemporary and remains as edgy as ever. The revamped Pasha de Cartier, which headlines this year’s collection, retains much of the charm of the original while adding a smattering of modern features, including the chained, blue spinel crown and a “QuickSwitch” interchangeable strap system. Price: $25,300.

JAEGER-LECOULTRE MASTER GRANDETRADITION GRANDE COMPLICATION The Master Grande Tradition series epitomises Jaeger-LeCoultre’s horological ingenuity and artistic creativity. This masterpiece incorporates 2 of the most romantic yet technically challenging complications in horology – a minute repeater and a celestial vault. The Orbital Flying Tourbillon embodies Jaeger LeCoultre’s mastery of astronomical complications in its celestial vault complication. In order to depicts a stunning sky-chart of the Northern Hemisphere night sky as seen from the 46th parallel – the latitude of Jaeger LeCoultre’s home, Jaeger LeCoultre talented watchmakers have invented a complex mechanism based on the sidereal day. Slightly shorter than a solar day (on which we base civil timekeeping), a sidereal day is based on Earth’s rotation measured relative to the ‘fixed’ stars, which takes precisely 23 h, 56 min and 4.1 seconds. 48 LUXURY LIVING
The sidereal day is used by astronomers to follow the apparent movement of the stars across the night sky. Indicated on the periphery of the dial are the day, date, month, and zodiac signs, which correspond with the constellation map dazzlingly, presented on the watch’s face This limited edition of just eight pieces each in rose gold and in white gold features a new aesthetic that reaffirms Jaeger-LeCoultre’s mastery of the artistic crafts. PIAGET ALTIPLANO ULTIMATE CONCEPT Since its introduction of the groundbreaking Caliber 9P back in 1957, Piaget has been at the forefront of making watches and their movements as thin as technology and style trends allow. In 2018, after four years of research and development, the watch-and-jewelry brand achieved a new level of horological slimness with the Altiplano Ultimate Concept watch, whose case was an astounding 2 mm thick. Following two years of further refinements, the model still has “Concept” in its name but is now commercially available. Among space-saving innovations are its cobalt alloy case, which also serves as the movement’s baseplate. The crown is telescoping and retractable, and its patented bridge structure is placed unconventionally over the dial, rather than beneath it. The mainspring barrel is exposed and drumless, and the balance wheel sits unconventionally on the side of the dial. Finally, the crystal is wafer thin. Perhaps most impressive, Piaget has designed the watch so that the bridges, hands, mainplate, and other elements can be color-customized. Price: Upon request. 50 LUXURY LIVING

GLOBAL GIVING The Coronavirus has sparked an unprecedented level of philanthropy as never seen before
Coronavirus took most of us – governments, businesses and individuals – by sur-
prise. Feelings of anxiety and fear have spread across parliaments, board rooms
and our homes. But many philanthropists, seasoned and novice have taken important action to help those in need.
To date it has been reported that philanthropic giving to combat the coronavirus has reached unprecedented levels, already topping US$1 billion (£816 million)
across the world. This is a huge amount compared to the sums donated in response to other catastrophes, including Ebola (US$362 million) and Hurricane
Harvey (US$341 million). But then the scale of this crisis is so much larger than anything else we have seen before.
A large amount of the most generous private donating has been given by wealthy enterprising families in a type of philanthropy known as “family giving”. This
kind of giving can be extraordinarily effective in the context of a disaster relief, partly because family businesses are often better able than other types of com-
panies to quickly gather owners, board members and executives to respond to a disaster. They also tend to have a more informal decision-making process which can allow a flexible and agile response.
Indeed, the fact that most governments are shifting into “crisis mode” is in part
because it grants them the right to take decisions more effectively, with processes
similar to those of an owner-led family firm. And many of these families are actively supporting their communities as coronavirus continues to spread.

HOW LUXURY BRANDS RESPONDED TO COVID-19 In Italy, one of the worst affected countries in the coronavirus pandemic, the Agnelli family, an
Italian business dynasty mainly associated with the car industry, made a €10 million (£8.8 million)
donation to the Italian Civil Protection Department and to local agencies that provide health care and social assistance in the region of Piedmont. The family has also used its companies to become directly involved in purchasing medical equipment, distributing food and medicine, and supporting distance teaching schemes in schools.
In France, the family-owned luxury goods group LVMH (owner of brands including Christian Dior, Givenchy, Prada and Bulgari) has converted three cosmetics factories for the large-scale production of hand sanitiser, which it will distribute to French hospitals. It has also given 40m face and surgical masks to be distributed amongst French healthcare workers, and contributed £1.9m to The Red
Cross Society in China when the coronavirus outbreak first occurred in January. In Italy the fashion
house acted swiftly donating six intensive care units to three of Milan’s biggest hospitals: San Raffaele, Sacco and children’s hospital Vittore Buzzi, its Prada brand also helped produce 80,000 hospi-
tal gowns and 110,000 surgical masks following a call for help from the Tuscany region, made using a breathable, non-woven propylene fabric.
Elsewhere, Swiss family-run health care giant Roche was among the first to help develop a new test for coronavirus which it hopes will dramatically increase capacity to detect the virus and luxury beau-
ty brand Estée Lauder has donated $2 million to help Doctors Without Borders, which has deployed
its volunteers to work in countries that currently lack sufficient resources to tackle coronavirus. The
brand has also responded to the worldwide shortage of hand sanitiser by reopening a factory in New York to produce hydroalcoholic gel for high-risk groups and medical staff at Melville, New York and UK- front-line workers.
124 LUXURY LIVING
Well known wealthy individuals have also decided to act. A group of Italian billionaires including
Giorgio Armani, Remo Ruffini and Silvio Berlusconi have pledged more than US$45 million to fight coronavirus in their country.
In the world of sport, basketball players like Zion Williamson and Blake Griffin were among those
who promised to cover salaries for employees who lost their income after play was suspended. Other athletes from the sports world are also supporting a coronavirus fundraiser.
Luxury automakers have also joined the fight part of Lamborghini’s Sant’Agata facilities in Bologna which is normally used to trim Alcantara leather for models such as the Urus and Aventador have been utilised to manufacture 1,000 surgical masks daily along with protective shields.
Likewise top marque Rolls Royce answered the British government call to arms to use their factories and know how to help produce medical ventilators
Among the super wealthy, Bill Gates, who previously warned of the disastrous effects of viruses, has
committed around US$100 million to help combat coronavirus around the world and China’s richest
man, Jack Ma has given 100m yuan (£11.5 million) through his foundation to help fund vaccine de-
velopment. He is has also made a donation of a total of 1.1 million testing kits, six million masks, and 60,000 protective suits and face shields to help the continent in its fight against the new coronavirus last week. Mukesh Ambani, the richest man in India, donated ₹500 crore ($66.7 million) to India’s
coronavirus aid while Former hedge fund manager George Soros pledged €2 million ($2.2 million) to two different causes; firstly the municipal government of Soros’ native Budapest provide for the Hungarian capital’s elderly and homeless populations and secondly to Milan to help the Italian city end and recover from its devastating coronavirus outbreak.
One of the most generous amounts donated was that of Twitter and Square cofounder Jack Dorsey
who donated $1 billion to coronavirus relief efforts which amounts to nearly a third of his net worth.
125
LUXURY LIVING LIVING u
THANKLESS GESTURE Whilst large sums of money have been donated to tackle the coronavirus large amounts of private wealth
will be required to tackle the long-term consequences. Beyond the medical crisis, there will be a range of serious issues that arise from this pandemic, including food
insecurity, the loss of jobs, and various challenges related to education and mental health.
It’s also worth bearing in mind that philanthropic plans
don’t always go to plan - done incorrectly, they can lead
to backlash and unintended negative consequences, such as when promises to fund repairs for Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris led to widespread criticism and questions over privilege and power.
Yet philanthropists - particularly enterprising families
and businesses - have played an essential role in facing
these issues thanks to their ability to provide spontaneous support. Looking ahead, they will need to prepare
flexible and sustainable funding models that will help
build resilience for future catastrophes. Fortunately, many large scale donors don’t wait to be asked for help.

The Royal Connections behind 2020’s most vivacious pen
As a brand that has made its name creating pens for the rich and powerful, Montegrappa is no stranger to royalty. But the luxury brand was delighted to receive the opportunity to work with Sarah, Duchess of York creating what some may say the most vivacious writing silhouette of 2020
130 LUXURY LIVING
Slender lines, rich colours and smooth writing are the
hallmarks of a new pen created by the Duchess togeth-
er with Italy’s flagship pen brand Montegrappa. “Our collaboration came about after a chance introduction
through a mutual friend,” explains Giuseppe Aquila, owner and Creative Director of Montegrappa. “She
came to visit us in Bassano del Grappa, and it was in our gardens that the idea began to germinate.”
Aquila is referring to Duchess, the maker’s newest
limited-edition pen. The new collection is unasham-
edly pretty, combining 0.925 sterling silver with an 18K gold nib adorned with the personal monogram of Sarah, Duchess of York. The glittering colours of Duchess
come from her choice to use celluloid – a supple, organically textured material that loves to be held. There are
three colours available in small, individually numbered batches of only 100 pieces.
Aquila explains how they decided to let each of the col-
ours be inspired by a different natural kingdom. “Garden
uses a summery yellow with a chrysanthemum motif.” Other colours in the collection are an autumnal orange for Forest and Ocean, represented by Mediterranean
blue. Each features its own ornamental frieze engraving on its silver trims. As Aquila points out: “many of our craftspeople are jewellery artisans in their own right.”

Fountain pens may not be Instagram’s most-shared accessories, but they have been steadily coming back into fashion in recent years. Recent public endorsees of Montegrappa have included Hollywood glitterati, artists and, of course, writers. For luxury writing instruments of this calibre, the highest levels of workmanship are a must, and Montegrappa has been part of Italy’s luxury landscape for more than a century.

Beautiful packaging is another important ingredient, and it is here that Sarah was able to add another, even more personal touch to the project. A special portfolio carry case features concertinaed pockets delivered with a series of postcards photographed by the Duchess herself. Images captured on her travels delve into each of the three realms of nature, and are paired with a wistful selection of her favourite quotes. “It’s a really delightful touch that made this collaboration feel like a true meeting of minds,” says Aquila.

Etiquette The Essential Cigar
Whether you’re trying to look cool, bag a powerful client of simply want to just give it a go, there’s an art to cigar smoking and knowing what to do versus what not to do can make the process of a first-time smoke go smoothly
136 LUXURY LIVING
Smoking cigars has become increasingly popular as favourite pastime for both men and women but if you’ve never smoked
one before, it’s not hard to seem like a novice. There’s an art to
cigar smoking so whether you’re a cigar “newbie” or just want to make sure you’re following cigar smoking protocol, you can
get it all done by understanding a few simple cigar rules. Here are a few tips to steer you in the right direction.
137
LUXURY LIVING LIVING u
1. KNOW YOUR CIGARS They say a good cigar is like a good wine and the first step in proper cigar
etiquette is to have an idea of the different cigar selections so you can
develop a preference. Just as you have to get familiar with various wines to know what you like, you have to take time to know your cigars. Cigars
come in different sizes, shapes and flavours. According to a 2017 study from the Tobacco Regulatory Science Journal, most popular flavours of
cigars are fruit-based and accounted for over half of the cigars purchased. Some popular fruit flavours include melon and strawberry. 2. CUT IT RIGHT Before you can enjoy your first puff your cigar has to be cut, you’ll need
to use a genuine cigar cutter such as a cigar punch, double blade cutter, or a V-cutter. There should never be any excuse for the use of a Stanley or pen knife, and an ultimate faux pas would be to bite-off the cap - it’s just uncouth.
There are a variety of cutting styles for different purposes, including the punch cutter and the v-cutter methods. Punch cutters punch a hole into the cigar and minimizes the amount of tobacco in the mouth. They are easy to use and great for cigars with mixed fillers. V-cutters create a
notched hole in the cigar and are ideal for cigars with small rings for an intense experience. But the “guillotine” or straight cutter method is great for beginners because it’s a straight cut that offers a less intense experience than other cutting styles.
Cut the cigar correctly by clipping the cigar’s end. Make sure you cut the
ends with a firm and fast motion so you can prevent tears and snags in
your cigar. The smaller the cut of the cigar the stronger your experience is.
138 LUXURY LIVING
3. DON’T HOLD THE CIGAR IN YOUR MOUTH When you are lighting the foot of your stogie, don’t rush things and ensure you hold the flame as far away
from the foot as you can get away that still allows your cigar’s tobacco to char. For torch lighter users, take
extra precaution, as your cigar can quickly become a wreck if you get too close with one of these flames.
Your cigar should remain in your hand, not in your mouth, when lighting as this gives you full scope in terms of what you are doing. Once the foot takes on a red glow, gently blow on the glowing area which will help to spread the heat evenly. Expect to put in some extra toasting on some brands, particularly for
those who have selected a cigar with a lot of oily ligero tobacco as part of their blend; the black-looking leaves, in case you needed to know.
The notes to take away here are to relax, and show attention to detail. If you just whip it out, stick it in your mouth and light up cigarette-esque, overcooking can occur, more often than not resulting in a less than impressive light, paired with an undesirable bitter smoke. 4. DON’T INHALE Cigars aren’t cigarettes, so don’t bother inhale cigar smoke. Smoking cigars is about savouring the aroma
and flavours, not getting a heightened dose of nicotine. Cigars also hold more tobacco than cigarettes. In a typical cigar, you can expect about 1 to 20 grams of tobacco, compared to just one gram of tobacco in cigarettes.
5. EXTINGUISHING YOUR CIGAR There are some who want to savour everything they can from their cigar smoking it all the way down to the very last point possible. However, this isn’t always a good thing to do as the flavour can be lost, and
although it is perfectly fine, you don’t want to be drawing on a smoke that has begun to turn bitter within in the last inch or so.
One thing to bear in mind is that a cigar is not cigarette so once you have reached the end of your cigar, all you should do is lay the butt in the ashtray saddle and your stogie will extinguish by itself. If you
proceed to snuff it out personally, it will cause a sour odour to arise as well as leaving an unsightly mess.

TO BODLY GO! MB&F + L’EPEE 1839 UNVEIL THE NEW STARFLEET EXPLORER
Six years after the launch of the Starfleet Machine, the first clock co-created by MB&F and L’Epée 1839, a new expedition is underway. The space station returns in 2020, in a more compact size and enhanced with bright colours, accompanied by a fleet of three small spacecraft exploring the universe; it rightfully bears the name of Starfleet Explorer. Designed by MB&F, the Starfleet Explorer is an intergalactic spaceship-cum-table clock crafted by L’Epée 1839, the last remaining Swiss manufacture specialised in high-end table clocks. Not only does it display the hours and minutes, it also features an animation in which three spacecraft perform a five-minute orbit of the station. The highly visible, superlatively finished in-house movement boasts an exceptional eight-day power reserve. The mechanism can be manually wound using a double-ended key serving to wind the movement as well as to set the time. A TABLE CLOCK LIKE NO OTHER! The Starfleet Explorer is a table clock, featuring essentially the same mechanisms as a wristwatch, only larger: gear train, mainspring barrel, balance wheel, escape wheel and pallet-lever. L’Epée 1839’s regulator also features an Incabloc shock protection system, something generally only seen in wristwatches, which minimises the risk of damage when the clock is being transported. One might be tempted to think that the more substantial size of the components simplifies work. Larger components, however, make finely finishing the movement much more difficult to handle than finishing a wristwatch, because of the bigger surface areas. Hours and minutes are indicated by means of two discs, along with an aperture and a brightlycoloured hand. More specifically, the minutes on a revolving radar dish are read off when they appear through the centre of a fixed metal aperture, satin-brushed by hand and anodised, that follows the dome’s curved contours.

The hours disc placed just below remains motionless. An hour hand – likewise satinbrushed and anodised – indicates the hour by spinning in its place and performing a complete turn around the disc in 12 hours. Starfleet Explorer also features a significantly original new element in the form of three tiny spacecraft, lined up along the same axis at regular intervals and placed inside the actual Starfleet movement, the heart of the mechanism, around which they revolve at a rate of one full turn every five minutes: a space exploration guided by the mothership. The Starfleet Explorer’s movement is placed horizontally, but its escapement is vertically positioned. The impeccably finished stainless stain or palladium-treated brass components (with the exception of the 11 jewels) are designed and manufactured in the L’Epee 1839 Swiss atelier. The gears and mainspring barrel are on full display thanks to the skeletonised mainplate and concentric C-shaped external structure. The Starfleet Explorer can rest on both ends of its vertical landing gear; a useful feature when turning it over to wind the mainspring and set the time. It can also be leant sideways so as to offer a different view of the intergalactic horological station.
Starfleet Explorer is launched as three limited editions of 99 pieces each in blue, green and red proved from $10,500.00 each

ACHIEVEING PERFECTION
ON EVERY SCALE! Sir Henry Royce once said, “Small things make perfection, but perfection is no small thing.” It is in this vein that Rolls-Royce Motor Cars presents to its clients, perfect scale models of Cullinan, the marque’s stellar SUV
150 LUXURY LIVING
Rolls Royce have unveiled an authentic 1:8 scale replica of a full-sized Cullinan, in which every detail is reproduced with absolute perfection.
Far more than a mere model, each miniature Cullinan is individually and painstakingly crafted by hand, to the client’s specification, from over 1,000 individual components. This process can take up to 450 hours – over half of the time required to build a full-sized Cullinan at the Home of Rolls-Royce in Goodwood, West Sussex.
The replica is hand-painted using Rolls-Royce colour-matched paint, then hand-polished to the marque’s exacting specification; the coachline is even applied using a fine brush, just as it is on the original. Clients may choose from a
palette of around 40,000 ‘standard’ colours, or replicate their own personal Bespoke finish. The fully-functioning ex-
terior lights are operated by a Cullinan-branded remote control; under the bonnet is a perfect likeness of the iconic 6.75-litre twin-turbocharged V12 engine.
On opening the coach doors, illuminated treadplates are revealed, leading to an interior designed and executed with
the materials, skill and attention to detail lavished on Cullinan itself. From the headrest embroidery and wood finishes
to seat piping and stitching, these Bespoke creations allow clients to recreate their full-size vehicle with astonishing accuracy, or even envision future Cullinans to add to their collection.
Presented in a display case at almost a metre in length, the replica is set on a gloss-black base mounted on a plinth
allowing it to be appreciated from all angles. The Perspex window can be removed enabling the minutiae of the doors, luggage compartment and engine bay to be viewed in detail.

South African manufacturers Super Veloce have unveiled
their latest supercar coffee making machine which pays tribute to Porsche’s legendary 993 flat-six, air-cooled engine.
The RS Black Edition uses some of the same materials that you’d find in an actual engine. Designed to look like the classic
air-cooled 3.6-liter flat-six from 993-generation 911 (the last air-cooled 911), the coffee machine is a mix of surgical stainless steel, aluminium, and titanium.
The portions resembling the engine’s cam covers are carbon
fiber. The engine block gets an anodized satin black finish, and the cylinder heads are anodized bright black.
Limited to just 993 machines globally Super Veloce also offers a small range of alternative espresso machines to suit any life-

HOW THE COVID-19 CRISIS COULD
REMODEL THE LUXURY INDUSTRY The Covid-19 crisis has hit the luxury and fashion industry hard According to a study conducted by the Boston Consulting Group, sales in both the luxury markets and fashion sectors could drop by 25% to 30% compared to 2019.The economic and health crisis could also have long-term repercussions on purchasing behaviour, trends and trigger tremendous changes in the luxury markets. A SECTOR AT A STANDSTILL Laudably, the main luxury houses have reallocated their production tools to produce hydroalcoholic gels (LVMH, Hermès), manufacture face masks and lab coats (Kering, Chanel, Louis-Vuitton). They also decided to provide financial support to health services and to their employees. Some companies, such as Hermès, have proposed a reduction in the dividend paid to shareholders and no raise in management remuneration. On April 16, LVMH CEO, Bernard Arnault announced that he would give up two months’ salary. Beyond these immediate measures, luxury goods companies have no choice but to rethink their strategies to face a more severe crisis for the sector than the financial crisis of 2007. According to Javier Seara of the Boston Consulting Group, luxury goods sales could plunge by 65% to 80% in March and April 2020 compared to 2019 before rebounding at the end of the year. The impact will not be the same in all countries, according to the US firm: In Western Europe, it could fall by 30% to 40%; in Northern Europe, from 32% to 38%, in North America from 23% to 34% and China from 24% to 30%. The drop in sales is among others correlated with the difficulties in selling the spring-summer 2020 collections. In China, some luxury brands were able to make online sales (notably thanks to the WeChat application) but not all firms have deployed an omnichannel strategy and nor are they able to ensure deliveries. In Europe the lockdown came later. The end of Chinese tourism and the closing of stores small and large as well as department stores will have disastrous effects on end-of-year inventory levels and on income. In the United States, the same trend is looming and several historic players, including Neiman Marcus and JC Penney, may be filing for bankruptcy. Companies suffer not only on the sales side, but they also have to cope with a supply issue. According to a study led by Mckinsey & Company, 40% of the world’s production of luxury goods occurs in Italian factories. Most of these are medium-sized or family businesses and have not restarted yet despite a gradual easing of restrictions. As the major luxury brands still produce mostly in their country of origin or nearby, Europe with its main manufacturing sites and workshops in France and Italy is particularly affected. 159
LUXURY LIVING LIVING u
A change is required
In the longer term, significant changes are to be considered. Here are five main trends that we may see: 1. A ramping up of digitalization To dispose of their inventories during the closure of their stores, luxury houses will strive to offer an online service with a first-class customer experience. It should be a flawless process from the product offering through to the secured payment and timely delivery. Luxury groups will have to attract many more customers (at least temporarily) to their digital platforms and create a new customer journey. In the short term, if they do not already have their own platform, some players may collaborate with existing marketplaces (i.e., merchant websites managed by a third-party provider of goods or services), for example, Farfetch. But they will also have to roll out their own online sales channels to fully control the customer experience and preserve their brand image. This will involve initiatives such as the creation of virtual stores or ephemeral “pop-up shops, as some players have already done on WeChat.
160 LUXURY LIVING
2. A second-hand market boom Before the Covid-19 crisis, consulting firms BCG and Altagamma predicted that the second-hand market, estimated at 22 billion euros in 2018, would grow by 12% by 2021. The emergence of ethical and ecological considerations among consumers is thus a favourable prospect for sites like Vestiaire Collective, founded in France and which has become one of the world’s largest online marketplaces to buy and sell pre-owned designer clothes and accessories. As we look ahead towards difficult times, customers may turn even more to these second-hand goods. Consumers with luxury items and in need of cash will offer their items for sale, thus expanding supply, albeit at lower prices which could stimulate demand. This trend seems to be gaining momentum even in Hong Kong. 3. A shift in consumer behaviour toward more responsible luxury On April 11, Hermès reopened its Guangzhou flagship store and reportedly achieved a $2.7 million turnover in a single day. Will the phenomenon of revenge spending observed in China spread to other countries? Or does it illustrate the attractiveness of Hermès in particular? While it is too early to draw conclusions, the example is interesting. It can be seen as an aspiration for timeless luxury and for an ethically committed house. This trend was evident even before the start of the pandemic, in particular among millennials (those born between the early 1980s and the late 1990s): 64% indicated that would be influenced by sustainability in their buying behaviour. Still, many consumers and resellers will face a reduction in their financial resources and could put a hold on their purchases. This situation may force luxury houses to reduce the number of collections and products offered each year. Consumers could even reconsider the concept of ownership and shift toward rental services.
161
LUXURY LIVING LIVING u
4. A probable cut in communication and public relations budgets spending In the current context, brands will have to review the way they communicate. In particular, fashion weeks in their traditional format – and whose June editions have now been cancelled in Paris and Milan – must be revisited. They could be replaced by virtual experiences and more “private” events. In the coming months, the organisation of large gatherings will indeed remain limited. Faced with the crisis, it is self-evident that luxury companies will have to restrict spending and that communication and events budgets will be the first to be impacted. 5. Consolidations in the luxury industry With the financial difficulties, many players, and in particular the smallest, will become more-affordable targets. The most financially solid players such as LVMH, Kering or Chanel will no doubt have the option of buying out competitors, subcontractors and even suppliers.
u Confronted with the lasting effects of the crisis and taking into account the observed consumption trends, significant changes in the industry are to be expected. Concentration of ownership in the luxury sector will intensify, the shift to digital will become absolutely crucial, and efforts in terms of sustainable development will be expected from consumers. The new business models linked to second-hand and luxury goods rental should also come out as winners. This crisis, which forces us all to reconsider our purchasing decisions could bring the era of “slow luxury” and trigger a new awareness of the circular economy. So on May 6th Grammy, Emmy, Golden Globe, Tony and Oscar-winner John Legend hosted a special session to taste and discuss his latest LVE Provence Rosé and the LVE French Sparkling Rosé editions. Long-time wine lover John Legend had always wanted to create his own wine label and his foray into wine comes as no big surprise given his interest in good food and wine, along with that of his wife, swimsuit model and food blogger Chrissy Teigen and following a chance meeting with Napa Valley winemaker Jean-Charles Boisset of Raymond Vineyards and owner of the Franco-American luxury lifestyle company Boisset Collection the dream soon became a reality with the launch of LVE (Legend Vineyard Exclusive). Raymond who has wineries in Napa and France and is also the largest wine producer in Burgundy is described as the perfect partner for John Legend whose passion for creating not just beautiful music but memorable moments has also translated into creating wines that have meaning. The LVE wines are a unique collection of rich, soulful and complex wines that embody romance, style, elegance and sophistication featuring six exquisite wines; a Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, a Napa Valley Chardonnay, a Sparkling Rose, and rich Red and two subtly Rose’s. The LVE Cabernet Sauvignon is comprised primarily of Cabernet from Raymond’s Rutherford and St. Helena estate vineyards, as well as 15% Petite Verdot. Powerful and opulent, it offers a distinct complement to the elegance, finesse and balance presented by Raymond’s well-known Generations and District Collection Cabernets. This Cabernet Sauvignon opens with enticing aromas of dark fruit and cocoa. Blackberry, black liquorice and oak flavours envelop the palate with hints of warm mulling spices and chocolate. Complex and powerful, this wine has a long, luxurious finish.
168 LUXURY LIVING
The LVE Napa Valley Chardonnay offers a luscious and voluptuous style of Chardonnay with a pronounced fruit expression and creamy, full mouthfeel; it was barrel-fermented, underwent full malolactic fermentation, and was aged in 60% new French oak barrels. The LVE Rosé is a brilliant, pale pink colour. Comprising 60% Grenache, 25% Cinsault, and 15% Syrah grown in the Montagne Sainte-Victoire region of Provence on stony, limestone-based soils. In the glass, it’s highly aromatic with delicate notes of peach blossom, raspberry and apricot. On the palate, crisp light notes of fresh picked strawberry and white nectarine lead to an elegant, lengthy and a mineral finish. The pink colour of the LVE Rose French Sparkling is reminiscent of a vineyard peach. With a fruity nose, blending notes of citrus and small red fruits, the bubbles are soft and pleasant. It’s well-balanced with voluptuousness and hints of red currents and pomelos, complemented by a nice acidity on the finish. The grapes were selected from a blend of vineyards in well-known growing regions of France, like the Loire and Languedoc to create its unique and fruity style. The LVE red is a harmonious blend of weighty tannins from the Petite Sirah with the suppleness of Merlot creates a complete wine with length and persistence on the palate accompanied by notes of cocoa nibs and coffee.

In a recent interview when asked which wines would best suit his music John Legend replied: LVE Sparkling Rosé: “Save Room” - it’s the perfect summer pairing LVE Côtes de Provence Rosé: “All of Me” - last year’s still rosé has become a wedding favourite, just like “All of Me.” LVE Chardonnay: “Ordinary People” - a Chardonnay is a classic to keep in the kitchen for cooking or pairing with meals. LVE Red: “Penthouse Floor” - this red is a funky blend packed with lots of flavour. LVE Cabernet Sauvignon: “You & I (Nobody in the World)” - This wine is the kind you can kind of get lost in, as you would with that special someone. Plus it’s Chrissy’s favourite! LVE’s Sparkling Brut Blanc de Blancs: “So High” - our limited edition sparkling brut is rich, soulful, and complex. Legend isn’t the only musician who has entered the winemaking business other celebrities include Drew Barrymore, Francis Ford Coppola, Antonio Banderas, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Dan Aykroyd and Gérard Dépardieu, George Clooney & Jon Bon Jovi. JUST DRINK IT: WHY WINE INVESTING USUALLY ISN’T WORTH IT Investing in fine wines has become increasingly popular over the past few decades as many in the viticulture industry have promoted fermented grapes as a way to boost returns and diversify a portfolio. The rapid rise in public interest has been accompanied by a growing body of economic literature but the evidence suggests it may not be wise to buy wine as investment instead of for drinking
172 LUXURY LIVING
As you might expect, the wine trade considers its product the ultimate asset. Industry insiders have argued that wine generates above-average returns, helps to diversify an investor’s portfolio (thus lowering its risk) and – if all fails – the owner can still drink it. Zachy’s, a major New York wine retailer and wine auction house, for example, claims that auction prices of top Bordeaux wines have increased 25% to 50% annually in the past few years. And back in 1998, Peter Meltzer of the Wine Spectator, the world’s largest wine magazine, wrote that the wine market outpaced the Dow Jones Industrial Average throughout the 1990s. A would-be investor should know that the majority of wines are not “investment-grade” – a financial term signifying relatively low risk – and will not benefit from being stored for more than two or three years. Experienced wine investors concentrate on only the finest growths from Bordeaux and Burgundy and selected wines from California.
WINE: BARELY BETTER THAN TREASURYS Even among fine wines, the data on investing isn’t favourable. One of the first economic analyses that looked at the rate of return for storing wine over a period of time was conducted in the late 1970s by William Krasker. Drawing on 137 observations of red Bordeaux and California Cabernet Sauvignon from 1973 to 1977, he found that the return for holding such wine was not much better than that of risk-free US Treasury bills – which typically offer the lowest yields in the market. To explain some of that difference it’s worth noting that stocks often yield dividends, while wine only offers capital appreciation. In addition, investing in wine incurs storage and other costs. Elizabeth Jaeger of the University of Virginia, appeared to counter that poor performance with her own study, published in 1981. She reported that a wine portfolio similar to Krasker’s outperformed Treasury bills by 16.6%. This large difference, however, mainly comes down to sampling different periods of time (1969-1977 in Jaeger’s study) and her use of substantially lower annual storage costs than Krasker’s $16.60 a case.
173
LUXURY LIVING DINING u
THE ‘BORDEAUX EQUATION’ In a seminal study that focused on a single year, Princeton economist Orley Ashenfelter developed the “Bordeaux equation,” which enabled him to predict the quality of a wine vintage based on winter rainfall and growing-season temperatures in the famous French wine region of that name. He found that the real return on holding a range of Bordeaux wines in 1991 was 2.4%, a pittance compared with a 30% gain in the Dow Jones Industrial Average. A similar study by Gregory Jones and me in 2001 on Bordeaux wines for specific chateaux were significantly below those for common stock. Another study from that year, this one by Benjamin Burton and Joyce Jacobsen, analyzed the semi-annual returns from storing Bordeaux wines from 1986 to 1996, focusing on repeat sales of the same wine and comparing them with various financial assets. They discovered that a portfolio of first growths – a designation considered among the best – returned 6.8% over the period, barely better than the 5.8% gain on Treasury bills but about half that of the Dow Jones benchmark index. Even a portfolio of William Sokolin’s first investment-grade wines didn’t do much better, returning an average of 9.4% at auction. And that’s before including sales commissions, insurance and storage costs, which would make them even worse. Not only does wine generally perform worse than equities, it’s also riskier. The standard deviation – a measure of variation when analyzing a variety of data points – of a wine portfolio consisting of grand cru selections is more than twice as high as that of the Dow Jones Industrial Average. Portfolios focused on first growths or the 1961 vintage exhibit an even larger degree of variability between the highs and the lows.
174 LUXURY LIVING
WINE AS A HEDGE While wine may not be a great investment on its own, it can work as a sort of hedge, or way to diversify a portfolio of assets and provide some protection during market downturns. Researchers analyzed Bordeaux auction prices before the financial crisis hit in 2008 and found that the changes in the two assets, wine and equities, bore little or no correlation to one another and moved independently, suggesting wine would be a good way to hedge or offset stock market risks. In fact, Philippe Masset and Jean-Philippe Weisskopf of the Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne studied the profitability of wine investments during the financial crisis, finding that adding them to a portfolio boosted returns – as well as risk. The study didn’t clarify whether this recent positive outlook on wine is a permanent phenomenon or was merely due to a bubble in prices, as suggested by NYU economist Boyan Jovanovic. The latter explanation, though, has proven to be more accurate. Since June 2011, the Dow Jones Industrial Average has jumped more than 50%, while fine wine prices have slumped more than 40%, according to the London International Vintners Exchange Fine Wine 50 Index. So this New Year’s might be a good time to dust off that Bordeaux you’ve been holding onto and enjoy it with your loved ones. Don’t buy another one in order to make money on it. This article was originally published on The Conversation.

New generation goes ‘flexitarian’ Millennials and centennials earnestly want to live a happy, healthy life, in symbiosis with the world
around them. They want food and drinks that are tasty and good for them and also good for the
planet and its people. The launch comes at a time when sustainability-conscious consumers, especially millennials and centennials, are increasingly adopting a ‘flexitarian’ or ‘freegan’ lifestyle – navigating seamlessly between plant-based products one day and animal products the next, or taking part in
milestones like ‘Veganuary ’– January as a month of an exclusively vegan diet – to reduce their carbon
footprint. In the UK alone, a 2019 YouGov study found that while only 1% of consumers classify as vegan, 14% of the population have adopted a plant-based diet one or more days a week.
Plant-based indulgent experiences that don’t compromise on taste The new dairy-free ‘M_lk Chocolate’ is creamy, milky and has the typical milk chocolate flavor and
texture. It is made with an ingredient of natural origin, exclusively available to Barry Callebaut. It took
a Barry Callebaut R&D team two years to develop this innovation. “The next generation of consum-
ers is looking for experiences that are tasty, good for them and good for the planet. With that in mind, we aim to accompany the industry in this plant-based revolution,” commented Pablo Perversi, Chief
Innovation, Sustainability and Quality Officer and Head of Gourmet at Barry Callebaut. “With more than 175 years of experience in mastering chocolate, creating indulgent experiences is at the heart of
what we do. Through this innovation, we’re proud to offer chocolate creations with all of the creaminess consumers love, 100% dairyfree.”
To support artisans and brands across the world in creating plant-based indulgent experiences, Barry Callebaut introduces ‘Plant Craft’, a wide range of dairy-free and vegan ingredients: chocolates, cocoa powders, nut products from paste to fillings as well as decorations.

REFINING SUPERIORITY Pernod Ricard has unveiled its much anticipated limited-edition, ultra-prestige rum Havana Club Tributo 2020 which marks the 5th anniversary of the Tributo Collection. The latest instalment in the range was released at the Habanos Festival (Havana, Cuba) with a limited release of 2,500 bottles globally Unveiled for the first time in 2016, each edition highlights a specific element of traditional Cuban rum making process, reflecting the knowledge and passion of the Masters of Cuban rum. This year, the Havana Club Tributo 2020 edition pays homage to the unique successive ageing and blending process used in Cuban rum, carefully carried out according to the Cuban traditions handed down by the Masters of Cuban Rum. To create the 2020 bottling, Asbel Morales, master of Cuban rum, hand-picked a small quantity of rum reserves from previous Tributo releases, which had been kept and further matured. Morales then blended them with a rum taken from a batch of 100 exclusive casks that have never been made available commercially. The final rum is said to have an “intense and rich hint of smoke, influenced by the Tributo 2018 release, as well as notes of dark chocolate, coffee and spice. A BUZZ OF ACTIVITY AT THE HOME OF ROLLS-ROYCE Although car manufacturing has been temporarily suspended, production of another unique, distinctly British treasure is running at record levels at the Home of RollsRoyce: the world’s most exclusive honey. In their third full season of production, the dedicated 250,000-strong workforce in the
company’s Apiary are set, once again, to exceed their 2020 volume targets for the ‘RollsRoyce of Honey’.
Having come through the winter in excellent health, Rolls-Royce’s English Honey Bees
are currently emerging from their hives and foraging on the half-a-million trees, shrubs and wildflowers flourishing across the 42-acre Rolls Royce site, plus the eight acres of
sedum plants growing on the manufacturing plant’s ‘living roof ’ – the largest of its kind in the UK. The more adventurous bees make sorties into the surrounding Goodwood Es-
tate, whose 12,000 acres of West Sussex countryside are among the glories of the South Downs National Park.
Established in 2017, the Goodwood Apiary comprises six traditional, English-crafted, wooden beehives, each bearing a polished stainless steel nameplate handcrafted in the
company’s Bespoke Workshop. Five are named after cars in the Rolls-Royce product
family – ‘Phantom’, ‘Wraith’, ‘Ghost’, ‘Dawn’ and ‘Cullinan’ – while the sixth, the ‘Spirit of Ecstasy’, celebrates the marque’s illustrious mascot.
Like the 2,000 employees at the Home of Rolls-Royce, the bees are responsible for producing a rare and desirable product. At the end of each season, ‘The Rolls-Royce of Hon-
ey’ is meticulously hand processed by local specialists and served to guests of the marque, including customers commissioning their motor cars in the company’s Atelier suite.
The Apiary project is Rolls-Royce Motor Cars’ response to the real and present threat
facing Britain’s Honey Bee population. Honey Bees are the principal pollinators of nu-
merous tree and plant species, including many of the fruit and vegetable crops that are crucial to the local agricultural economy around the Home of Rolls-Royce. However, a shortage of suitable forage, primarily caused by habitat loss, has put their numbers under great and growing pressure in recent years.

COULD THIS BE THE
FUTURE OF FINE DINING
Our lifestyles will forever be changed following the Coronavirus Pandemic and while we starts to relax the rules and start the process of easing out of lockdown the way we socialize and more importantly dine out will need to be evaluated not just now but for the future and this forward thinking restaurant in Amsterdam has come up with a unique and rather elegant idea
LUXURY LIVING DINING u
Mediamatic ETEN, a vegan restaurant located on the Dijksgracht in the Oosterdok neighborhood of Amsterdam is now inviting guests to dine in their own quarantine and personal greenhouses. The enclosed glass structures are equipped with a table for two or three diners and will ensure that diners are 1.5-meter apart. The restaurant calls the structures ‘serres séparées’ or separated greenhouses after “chambres séparées,” the French name for a separate room in a restaurant or bar to suggest a sexy kind of intimacy. Mediamatic Eten is part of a larger arts and entrepreneurship centre, Mediamatic Biotoop, which focuses on sustainability. Where possible, it offers locally-sourced food and creates dishes based on the availability of seasonal ingredients from selected producers. It picks herbs from its aquaponics garden and ferments products in the Mediamatic Clean Lab. Its dishes are normally meant for sharing as it encourages guests to experience them with their hands rather than using cutlery. While the concept is currently only on trial for family and friends of staff from the ETEN restaurant, this idea certainly looks glamorous, as diners can enjoy candle-lit meals with a waterside view and al fresco dining even in the rain.

SOUTH AFRICA South Africa hasn’t historically promoted its culinary excellence but just like its landscapes and its people, South Africa’s cuisine is wonderfully diverse.
Cape Town and Cape Malay promote a new age cuisine centre around the re-generated Vic-
toria & Alfred Waterfront. Meat plays a big part in meals all across South Africa, and in Cape Town you’ll find some of the finest steakhouses, alongside street food favourites such as biltong (dried, salted strips of beef or game), boerewors (farmer’s sausage) and braais (from ‘braaivleis’ meaning ‘grilled meat’; like a barbecue).
The Western Cape provides a modern French Fare centre around the regions excellent wines. Less than an hour’s drive from Cape Town lies the Cape Winelands – a beautiful, tranquil re-
gion with French colonial-style towns and gently rolling vineyards. From classic chenin blancs to full-bodied pinotages, the wines here are seriously good and wineries range from boutique cellar doors to internationally-acclaimed large wine estates.
With a coastline stretching over 1500 miles, seafood plays a major part of South Africa’s
food scene, where crayfish, prawns and fish feature heavily on restaurant menus. And there’s nowhere better to sample fresh seafood than Knysna. Along the Garden Route, beside a vast lagoon, Knysna has an interesting oyster history; the country’s first commercial oyster com-
pany which was founded in 1949. If you’re a big fan of seafood, consider visiting in early July to coincide with the annual Knysna Oyster Festival.

LUXURY LIVING POWER u
Czinger – pronounced “zinger” with a silent c this groundbreaking 21C hypercar can only be described as a Picasso of motor engineering, with just a limited run of 80 cars and priced at a staggering $1.7m (£1.4m) each of these cars are a modern masterpiece. The 21C is manufactured using cutting-edge technology tools that are integrated into a patented production system. Created in house by Czinger’s production system, including automated design and optimisation software, patented additive manufacturing driven processes, high accuracy automated assembly, and novel performance materials enables Czinger’s design and engineering team to express 21st century art in performance and design. A 21st century look at coachbuilding, each 21C is assembled by a team of artisans, from the fit and finish of each and every part - from seat brackets to suspension components - to the handcrafted carbon fibre and multi-layer, show quality paintwork.
u
Vehicle performance results from a design in which all parts have a precise purpose solely built to achieve that purpose and combine to work in harmony.
208 LUXURY LIVING
The 21C is designed and manufactured from the ground up by the Czinger team in Los Angeles, California. Lightweight, proprietary high-performance alloy and carbon fibre multi-material structures form the 21C chassis. Computationally engineered, printed and assembled, the chassis is home to an in-house designed strong hybrid powertrain that drives all four wheels. Achieving a true 1:1 power to weight ratio, a 2.88-litre, flat crank V8 with twin turbos located mid-vehicle, and an electric motor assigned to each front wheel drive the 21C to a 8.1 second quarter mile, 0-62 mph (0-100 kph) in 1.9 seconds, 0 to 186 mph (300 kph) to 0 in 15 seconds and 0 to 248 mph (400 kph) to 0 in 29 seconds. At 329hp (324bhp) per litre, Czinger’s priorities are clear maximize power to weight and power efficiency. Two continuous front traction motors and one combined crank-driven generator and starter (to ensure the power from the lithium-titanate batteries is readily available when needed) completes the strong hybrid set-up, which has 1250 hp (1233 bhp). This is paired with a seven-speed sequential transaxle gearbox with a hydraulic actuated multi-plate clutch to complete the entire drivetrain, which is designed, developed and built by Czinger. The Czinger design team upholds the company ethos of next generation thinking. The 21C provides the ideal seating position to achieve optimal performance driving and weight distribution.
209
LUXURY LIVING POWER u
The 21C’s iconic design originates from the concept of functional art. Performance driven “Iine logic” gives rise to the car’s dramatic shape. Every opening (cut) line on the car connects two graphic or functional features, and strong, athletic surfaces flow and wrap around the car’s performance core. Rooted in aerodynamic efficiency, the 21C’s in-line seating creates a narrow cabin that pierces the air. The shrink-wrapped body hugs the chassis, tightly sculpting the front and rear overhang around the wheels.
210 LUXURY LIVING
Never has a production car combined all of these design elements. Czinger’s revolutionary technology enables this design breakthrough. The result is a car that looks like nothing else on the planet.

WATFLY ATLAS THE STAR WARS STYLE ELECTRIC AIRCRAFT
What began as a student design project, the WatFly Atlas is a single-seat electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, which is intended for recreational use and supposed to be marketed from 2021 218 LUXURY LIVING
Designed by mechanical engineering students Abinesh Chandrasekhar and Gonzalo Espinoza Graham
of the University of Waterloo (Canada), before founding the independent start-up company Atlas the two students original goal was to make and produce a one passenger autonomous long-duration eVTOL aircraft for Urban Air Mobility (UAM).
The Atlas with its four rotors powered by a wing integrated battery pack will provide up to 60 minutes of
thrill filled flight reaching up to 125 mph whilst carrying about 250 lbs or hover for about 15 minutes. Its battery packs, about a quarter the size of a Tesla’s and can recharge in approx two hours.
Atlas’ strong, stiff carbon fibre structure combines with our active cabin gimbal suspension for true com-
fort. There’s also ample leg room and a rear storage area. So your luggage – from golf clubs, to skis or snowboards – simply fit. While inside the cabin there’s more than 180-degrees of breath-taking visibility thanks to the canopy wraparound.
Because of its configuration, Atlas is FAA certified as an Ultralight Air Vehicle, meaning you do not
need a pilot license to fly it; just the company‘s tailored training course. The use of the device is limited to leisure activities with the prohibition of flying over dense areas, including cities and villages, as well as certain specific airspaces.
As of February 2020, the company is now taking pre-orders for their aircraft and expect the first product models to be sold in 2021 the price for the Atlas is expected to be about $150,000.00 USD.

CELEBRATING LIFE IN THE
OPEN AIR Lamborghini unveils the new Huracรกn EVO Rear-Wheel Drive Spyder virtually, using for the first time Augmented Reality (AR) on its official website lamborghini.com
222 LUXURY LIVING
The new V10 model provides drivers with an open-air celebration of lightweight engineering, with rear-wheel drive and a specially tuned Performance Traction Control System (PTCS). Roof up or down, daily driving and high-performance fun are accompanied by the inimitable sound of the V10 aspirated power plant, delivering the same 610 hp (449 kW) and 560 Nm of torque as the coupé version. With a 0-100 km/h acceleration of just 3,5 seconds and a top speed of 324 km/h, like its coupé stablemate the Spyder is an instinctive driver’s car, delivering a fun-to-drive experience via hardware rather than software. The Huracán EVO RWD Spyder’s design optimizes the integration and function of the extremely lightweight soft top. The Spyder is a true Lamborghini with roof open and closed, sporting inimitable lines from every profile that confirm it is as dynamic in both looks and performance whether roof on or off. The Spyder’s exterior lines ensure drag reduction and downforce matches that of the coupé without requiring additional aerodynamic appendages, while enhancing the rear-wheel drive car’s balance and dynamism with roof both up and down.
223
LUXURY LIVING POWER u
DRIVING FUN IN THE OPEN AIR The Huracán EVO RWD Spyder is specially engineered as an instinctive driver’s car, still producing top performance figures but focused on the pilot’s skills and the set-up of the rear-wheel drive powertrain, providing unfiltered physical feedback and maximum engagement. The specially tuned P-TCS traction control system is designed for adrenalin-producing performance in all conditions, consistently delivering torque and assuring traction even as the Spyder is realigning after sharp cornering or drifting. Especially with the roof down, the driver’s senses are further aroused by the sound of the V10 aspirated engine responding to the throttle during manoeuvres. The Huracán EVO Spyder’s ANIMA button on the steering wheel puts the pilot in control of driving modes, with the P-TCS calibrated to suit. STRADA provides stability and safety in all conditions by minimizing rear-wheel slippage, and more proactively managing torque delivery on low-adhesion surfaces. In SPORT mode, the driver enjoys drifting fun, allowing the rear wheels to slide and skate during acceleration, with torque limited when oversteer angles increase rapidly so the driver can stabilize and control the car. CORSA mode optimizes the car’s traction and agility when exiting a corner in high-performance conditions, maximizing dynamics and speed.
The Huracán EVO RWD Spyder’s aluminium and thermoplastic resin body sits on a lightweight hybrid chassis in aluminium and carbon fibre, with a dry weight of 1,509 kg and a weight-topower ratio of 2.47 kg/hp. Front/rear weight distribution of 40/60, with double wishbone suspension with overlapped quadrilaterals and passive shock absorbers, providing optimized driver feedback. Ventilated and cross-drilled steel brakes are fitted to 19” Kari rims with specially-developed Pirelli P Zero tires, with optional 20” rims and carbon ceramic brakes.
224 LUXURY LIVING
225
LUXURY LIVING POWER u
DESIGNED FOR LIFE The Huracán EVO RWD Spyder continues the V10 Lamborghini’s powerful design with new front and rear features, clearly differentiating it from its Huracán EVO 4WD Spyder stablemate. Characterized by a new front splitter and vertical fins within the larger, framed front air intakes characterize, the rear bumper in high gloss black incorporates a new diffuser unique to the Huracán EVO RWD Spyder. The Spyder’s soft-top roof stows within 17 seconds under the rear hood, even while driving up to a speed of 50 km/h (31 mph). In a range of colour options, the soft-top perfectly complements the rear-wheel drive car’s body lines and colour options, while ensuring a quiet cockpit for easy conversation and entertainment with roof up or down. With soft top both up and down the driver can also electronically open the rear window, which functions as a windshield when up and highlights the V10 engine’s unique sound when down. Two removable lateral wind shields dampen lateral aerodynamic noise in the cabin, permitting conversations even at high speeds. An HMI 8.4” touchscreen in the Spyder’s center console controls the car’s functions as well as providing comprehensive connectivity for telephone calls, internet access and Apple CarPlay. The Huracán EVO RWD Spyder is a driver’s car and a lifestyle choice, complemented by virtually limitless colour and trim options through Lamborghini Ad Personam, allowing owners to personalize their car to their exacting tastes. Price and market delivery of the Lamborghini Huracán EVO RWD Spyder The first customers will take delivery of the new Lamborghini Huracán EVO RWD Spyder in summer 2020 from € 175,838 / £151,100 excluding taxes.

with a shallow draft of just 2.15 metres. Her contemporary exterior design, by Frank Laupman of Omega Architects, showcases a profile characterised
by a long waterline and floor-to-ceiling windows. A gently reversed stem with spray rails gives her a distinctive look.

nine crew in five cabins. Italian designer Cristiano Gatto created a tranquil and warm interior design, a crowd-pleaser dĂŠcor that invites guests to relax and unwind after an active day at sea.

FIBONACCI:
A NEW APPROACH TO SPACE EXPLOITATION The ‘Fibonacci’ is the result of a sculptural design approach combined with unique storytelling.
Division of space in boat design usually centres around finding creative
solutions to practical problems. The Icona Design team’s approach shifted the paradigm, instead finding practical solutions within the
spaces created by an asymmetric architecture together with a flow through inside-outside usage of the space.
The use of asymmetry gives a sense of movement to the yacht even when it is stationary. It certainly looks very “haute couture” as a result.
The philosophy of the ‘Fibonacci’ is that of a symphony at sea, its
design reflecting the elegant metaphor of a grand piano. Inspired by Fibonacci’s discovery of the numbers of nature, the ‘Fibonacci’ combines
a sculptural movement with a logical division of space between the
main deck and hulls. The sweeping parabolic wooden deck creates a pass-through offering ocean views from front to back and displaying a sense of occasion created by the ornamental stairs.
This yacht is designed to immerse travellers in a musical setting while
sailing on the silent ocean. It offers a luxurious cocktail lounge perfect for hosting guests and parties. Such a simple and practical architecture not only fits the bill for a cruising vacation but would also offer the
perfect scenery to gather music aficionados together for a chamber music concert on the sea...

THE RETURN OF AN
ALFA ROMEO LEGEND
110 years after its foundation, Alfa Romeo returns to its roots, bringing back one of the legends of its history and of motoring in general: the Giulia GTA
244 LUXURY LIVING
Great stories can be exciting and reassuring, an uplifting moment during tough times. A well-told story is like a well-made car, picking you up and getting you going. It can take you far away, at least
in the imagination. On June 24, Alfa Romeo will reach an important milestone in its remarkable history: 110 years in business. During that century-plus span, Alfa Romeo engineers and designers have relentlessly pursued innovation, while always remaining true to the brand’s DNA.
Over the years, this DNA–the perfect combination of sportiness and elegance–has created not only some of the most iconic vehicles ever built, but also vehicles that are right at home both on the race-
track and in any beauty contest. To mark its 110th birthday, Alfa Romeo presents a vehicle that fully signifies a return to the brand’s origins, while paying tribute to one of the most emblematic vehicles of Alfa Romeo: The Giulia GTA.
245
LUXURY LIVING POWER u
A SET OF INITIALS WITH A LEGENDARY FEEL: GTA
The acronym GTA stands for “Gran Turismo Alleggerita” (al-
leggerita being the Italian term for “lightened”), and it originated in 1965 with the Giulia Sprint GTA, a specific ver-
sion derived from the Sprint GT, designed as a sports car and presented at the Amsterdam Motor Show staged that same
year. The body of the Giulia Sprint GT was replaced with an identical version in aluminum, for a total weight of 1,642 pounds compared to the 2,094 pounds of the road version. A
second variation concerned the 1.6 twin cam engine which, in
the road configuration, with dual ignition, reached an impres-
sive output of 115 horsepower. The technicians of Autodelta, the official Alfa Romeo racing team, chose it as the reference
vehicle for the Touring category, and developed it to achieve a maximum output of 170 horsepower. The model’s success in
competitions was then immediate: three consecutive “Chal-
lenge Europeo Marche”, tens of national championships and hundreds of individual races in every part of the world. And
the way it ramped up the image of the entire range was also impressive: the Giulia Sprint GTA expressed the claim, “A
victory a day in your everyday car” to perfection. From then
on, the GTA made a name for itself as the undisputed icon of Alfa Romeo sportiness and the acronym GTA became so successful that the public soon associated it with all the sporty Alfa Romeo vehicles in general.
246 LUXURY LIVING
THE LEGEND IS RENEWED WITH EXCELLENT TECHNICAL SOLUTIONS On the year of its 110th anniversary, Alfa Romeo intends to break a few rules: it doesn’t intend to talk about history, especially its own, nor does it want any gifts for its birthday. Instead, it prefers to give a gift to Alfa Romeo enthusiasts by presenting the Giulia GTA. Today, this is a real return to the roots of Alfa Romeo, planted deep in the world of performance and grand touring.

LUXURY LIVING POWER u
SPECIFIC TECHNICAL FEATURES AND FUNCTIONAL STYLE For the new Giulia GTA, Alfa Romeo engineers have striven to improve aerodynamics and han-
dling, but above all to reduce weight: the same guidelines followed for the 1965 Giulia GTA. The active aerodynamics were specifically studied to increase the downforce. These solutions contain technical know-how that comes directly from Formula 1, thanks to the synergy with Sauber Engineering and the use of the Sauber Aerokit. The same task is assigned to the side skirts, the spe-
cific rear spoiler and the active aero front splitter. The titanium Akrapovič central exhaust system
integrated in the carbon fiber rear diffuser is also new, as are the 20-inch center lock wheels. The handling at high speeds has been improved by widening the front and rear wheel tracks by 50mm
and developing a new set of springs, shock absorbers and bushings for the suspension systems. On the GTAm, the aerodynamic front piece has been optimized to an extreme level, by adding a larger front splitter and a real carbon rear wing.
u
Moving inside the car, several new details stand out: the trim in 100% Alcantara® on the dashboard, door panels, glove compartment, side pillars and the central trim on the seats. Alcantara is used even more extensively on the GTAm version, where the rear bench has been removed, leaving room for a fully upholstered “basin”, hosting specific moldings designed to hold helmets and a fire extinguisher. The new matte carbon inserts endow the interior with a distinctive technical and aesthetic elegance. In the new GTAm, the interior is unique in that it features a roll bar, no door panels or rear seats and the door is opened with a belt in place of the handle, another touch that comes from the racing world.
248 LUXURY LIVING
AN EXCELLENT POWER-TO-WEIGHT RATIO But power on its own is not enough to ensure extraordinary performance. The work done to reduce vehicle weight has been meticulous and it has reaped particularly impressive results, with a total weight reduction of 220 pounds, thanks to the adoption of lightweight materials such as carbon fiber for the driveshaft, hood, roof, front bumper, front wheel arches, rear wheel arch inserts and, on the GTAm, the shell of the specific sporting seats with 6-point Sabelt safety belts. Further, lightweight aluminum is used in the engine, doors and suspension systems, and various other composite materials are used throughout. For instance, Lexan–a unique polycarbonate resin that comes straight from the world of motorsports–has been used in the side and rear window frames, further contributing to the weight reduction.
The result is a weight set around 3,350 pounds which, combined with the increase in power to 540 horsepower, brings the weight/power ratio to an excellent level, 6.2 lb/hp, making the Giulia GTA and GTAm capable of delivering extraordinary performance. Its acceleration from 0 to 62 mph is lightning fast–thanks to the Launch Control system, the chronometer stops at just 3.6 seconds. The Giulia GTAm is the two-seat configuration approved for onroad use, with a front splitter and larger visible rear wing in carbon, it is the ultimate expression of sportiness. In the GTA version, with the same power, the Giulia offers four seats, no rear roll bar; spoiler and splitter optimized for daily use on the road; the same door panels, seats and windows as those of the Giulia Quadrifoglio. The result is a veritable supercar for everyday use.

258 LUXURY LIVING
Styled by Italian Massimo Frascella, who in the early 2000s worked with Land Rover design boss Gerry McGovern at Lincoln, on the outside, the award-winning mid-size SUV features include a new front bumper with larger air intakes to feed the V8 Supercharged engine and cool the uprated braking system. A new grille and lower side mouldings combine with a revised rear bumper featuring integrated quad exhaust finishers. The exterior changes combine with a transmission tunnel undertray to ensure the fastest Velar in the range cuts through the air more efficiently. Even the Range Rover lettering on the bonnet and tailgate has been enhanced, with a knurled finish on the metal element of the two-piece letters adding a fresh degree of sophistication to the exterior. The SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition is also the only Velar available in Satin Byron Blue – a metallic paint finish from Special Vehicle Operations’ Premium Palette range – and all models feature a contrast Narvik Black roof as standard.
Distinctive forged aluminium wheels provide another clue to the enhanced performance. The lightweight 21-inch design weighs the same as the 20-inch wheels on the core model and customers can also specify optional 22-inch rims with a unique Silver Sparkle finish and diamondturned edging, providing a further degree of personalisation.
The larger wheels support the performance focus of the SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition, helping to generate more grip and accommodating larger brakes. The individual SV elements extend to the 12.3-inch Interactive Driver Display featuring unique ‘digitally knurled’ dials which deliver an expertly handcrafted sense and finish to the digital experience inside the mid-size SUV and a bespoke SVAutobiography Dynamic start-up screen. This digital detailing continues with the electronics that underpin the driving characteristics of the new flagship Velar model. Calibrations for the AWD system, Active Rear Locking Differential, eight-speed transmission, steering and air suspension have all been honed and are bespoke to the SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition; delivering a more focused driving experience. Engineers at Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations spent 63,900 hours fine-tuning the unique calibration to optimise the ride, handling and responsiveness.
LUXURY LIVING POWER u
The unique character of the Velar SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition is also reflected by its bespoke exhaust set-up, which provides a soundtrack to match its performance. SV’s Variable Active Exhaust System features valve technology to optimise the exhaust note, depending upon the driving conditions, and provides Velar with an unmistakable V8 rumble. The active set-up is 7.1kg lighter than the standard design and its increased gas flow helps to unlock some of the flagship model’s increased performance.
The Velar SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition sounds like no other SUV, but the most driver-focused model in the range is as practical as ever. The generous boot capacity is unaffected, while the flexible 40:20:40-split rear seats allow customers to vary the loadspace depending on their requirements. The 82-litre fuel tank also promises a genuine range in excess of 483km (300 miles). The new Velar SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition is available in six exterior colours: Firenze Red; Santorini Black; Corris Grey; Fuji White; Indus Silver and, by special order, Satin Byron Blue. Velar SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition is priced from ÂŁ86,120 OTR

THIS ELECTRIC PLANE HARNESSES THE ENERGY OF THE WIND AS A
CLEAN POWER SOURCE
Designed by Warsaw based designer, Michal Bonikowski, this aviation concept looks to alternative environmental methods for power
In the race to design to design the next generation of aircraft, many aircraft manufacturing companies are focusing on developing electric and hybrid-powered aircraft however, but Warsaw-based designer, Michal Bonikowski, has come up with a potentially revolutionary aeronautical project which could undermine the need for traditional engines, bulky fuel tanks, and large batteries for propulsion.
The concept is called “Eather One,” and it uses friction between the air and the high speed of the machine as its main energy source that can be recycled as needed.
Taking inspiration from one of Airbus’ Birds of Prey Concept- called Maveric, the Eather One is equipped with
tribo-electric nanogenerators on the wings to help harness external mechanical energy – the friction generated from vibrations in the air-frame and bend of the wings. These nanogenerators then convert mechanical energy directly into electrical energy.
In this way, the Eather One will have the advantage of being able to contain much smaller batteries on-board than
those of current projects. This will save weight, providing a further increase in overall performance. However, Bonikowski admits that the concept of this plane requires a certain amount of batteries when there is no friction, such as when take-off and landing. In this case, the aircraft will need some battery packs in order to complete them.

The launch highlights yet again the Italian shipyard determination to expand in the
US market yet preserves the harmonious and homogeneous style that are the distinguishing traits of the entire Invictus yacht range.
The first Invictus GT370S is equipped with two Yamaha 425 XTO engines (max power: 850 hp). Other configurations are being considered. Plenty of customisation opportunities for the interiors The continuity with the sterndrive model can be clearly seen in the interiors as well, which maintain the same considerable opportunities for customisation and the atten-
tion to detail typical of Invictus. Interiors are spacious and welcoming, with two large rooms below deck that can be configured to suit the end user’s needs. The large stern
cabin has two beds that can be turned into one bed big enough to sleep three children
or two adults very comfortably. The bow cabin can be furnished with a third bed or with a large side sofa combined with a small table, bar unit and television, creating a spectacular living area.
As a result of a greater available surface, the side windows feature a central “split” with a deeply material character, highlighting the Invictus tradition of elegant shapes.

Room for comfort The wheelhouse, with three oversized, ergonomical seats, is
designed for the comfort of the pilot and any other guests. A
striking feature is the foldable, small side lounging deck created in the central part of the port topside. In addition to making the whole boat more spacious and charming, it increases freedom of movement aboard and the usability of the deck.
The considerable wealth of details and accessories supplied as
standard include a bar unit integrated in the bridge seats, which
conceal a compact kitchen unit with sink, refrigerator, icemaker and dedicated cabinets.
The main feature in the central part of the deck is the extensi-
ble table. An L-shaped sofa with foldable stern back turns the entire rear area into a padded platform for sunbathing. The L-
shaped sofa integrated in the starboard side is open on the left
side, and removing the optional balcony means a view of the sea can be enjoyed in full.
All surfaces and upholstery are finished with details borrowed
from high-class leather items, and are highlighted by the combination with a large-section, chrome-plated stainless steel tu-
bular framework, which in many places has a fine leather cover, making the entire setting even more sophisticated. www.invictusyacht.com

STAY AHEAD IN STYLE WITH THE NEW
BMW CONCEPT 4i
The BMW Concept i4 takes electric drive to the core of the BMW brand and heralds a new era in Sheer Driving Pleasure. The BMW Concept i4 represents a look ahead to the BMW i4, slated to enter production in 2021
Providing a whole new take on the dynamic excellence for which BMW is renowned and blends a modern, elegantly sporty design with the spaciousness and functionality of a four-door Gran Coupe – all while generating zero local emissions. The drivetrain’s standout numbers include a range of up to 600 km (WLTP), output of up to 530 hp, 0 – 100 km/h (0 – 60 mph) acceleration of approximately 4.0 seconds and a top speed in excess of 200 km/h (124 mph). However, the driving qualities of the BMW Concept i4 cannot be expressed in figures alone. The virtually silent delivery of power creates an entirely new sensation of dynamism. As part of the package, the Concept i4 includes several exterior and interior design elements which will make an appearance in both the BMW i4 and other electrically-powered production vehicles.
LUXURY LIVING POWER u
THE EXTERIOR - ELECTRIFYING AESTHETICS
The modern, elegant exterior represents a deliberate counterpoint to the dynamic flair of the driving experience. The perfectly resolved Gran Coupe proportions create an authentic, modern and confident appearance. The long wheelbase, fastback roofline and short overhangs form a basic profile brimming with elegance and dynamism. With its four doors, the BMW Concept i4 offers not only a high level of everyday usability and practicality, but also a much larger interior than the car’s modern and dynamic proportions would immediately suggest. CLEAR SURFACES AND AERODYNAMIC DETAILS
Crisp, smooth lines and taut volumes merge into a rich, smoothly contoured sculpture and create a clear surfacing language. The modern exterior paint shade Frozen Light Copper reprises a colour nuance displayed by the BMW Vision iNEXT and showcases the interplay of surfaces to visually stunning effect. Blue elements in the front end, flanks and rear end point to the car’s BMW i origins. They shine a spotlight on the signature BMW i icons and bring the technology below the surface to the fore – for example, the kidneys in their role as an intelligence panel, the mouldings in the side skirts concealing the battery technology, and the diffuser elements in the rear end, which fill the design space vacated by exhaust tailpipes and enhance aerodynamic efficiency. A host of other aerodynamic measures maximise the car’s electric range. The blanked off kidney grille and clear aero lips provide detail examples of sophisticated airflow engineering at work. Another distinctive area of the car are the wheel rims. These have been designed exclusively for the BMW Concept i4 and blend aerodynamic and lightweight design; smooth – and therefore aerodynamically optimized – surfaces contrast with ultra-lowweight, high-strength spokes. The rims extend the car’s palette of colours and materials, emphasizing its luxurious overall character. 276 LUXURY LIVING
277
LUXURY LIVING POWER u
THE FRONT END - THE EYE-CATCHING FACE OF A NEW ERA The front-end treatment of the BMW Concept i4 presents the familiar BMW icons in a new look, lending a visually powerful face to the electric age at BMW. The prominent, closed-off kidney grille provides a tangible connection between the past and future of BMW. The BMW icon also gains new functionality: With no combustion engine to require cooling, the grille now serves primarily as an “intelligence panel housing various sensors. The grille teases the technology behind the scenes with a special design for this model. The headlights likewise provide a bridge between the past and the future; the classical four-eyed front end is reprised here with a very modern and pared-back interpretation. Two intricate, freestanding LED elements on either side integrate all of the requisite light functions. Clean surfaces and a small number of crisp lines around the grille create a contemporary front-end graphic with considerable visual impact. A BMW i-style blue accent in the grille surround sets the seal on the front-end styling.
STRIKING REAR END WITH AERODYNAMIC FEATURES The rear of the BMW Concept i4 sits low over the road and cuts a broad, horizontally emphasised figure. The surfaces progress across the rear in a smooth and luxuriant movement, and give it a very modern and calm appearance. The long, slim L-shaped rear lights continue the theme. Below the rear lights, the inward-angled surfaces form aerodynamics-enhancing lips and incorporate vertical air outlets. The verticality of the design here emphasises the car’s sporting stance. Further down, the rear apron has a forceful presence and enhances aerodynamic efficiency. Where exhaust tailpipes would once have been found, diffuser elements in BMW i Blue indicate the presence of a pure-electric drive system and reference the design of the BMW i Vision Dynamics.
LUXURY LIVING POWER u
THE INTERIOR – INNOVATION MEETS MINIMALISM The interior of the BMW Concept i4 focuses on those times when the driver chooses to pilot the car themselves. To this end, every element in the front of the cabin is trained on the driver. The new BMW Curved Display teams up with the steering wheel to reveal a new take on driver orientation and offers a look ahead to the display in the production versions of the BMW iNEXT and BMW i4. Here, the presentation surfaces of the information display and Control Display merge into a single unit inclined towards the driver. This screen grouping optimises presentation of information and makes the display’s touch operation more intuitive. Advanced display tech with non-reflective glass also removes the need for a shroud to shade the displays and therefore contributes to an extremely uncluttered and airy cockpit. The BMW Curved Display encompasses a large proportion of the section in front of the driver and above the centre stack, and gives the front area a very modern appearance. Its slim, borderless form exudes quality and sophistication. Almost all operating functions are integrated into the display as part of an overall approach centred on reducing the number of haptic controls to the minimum. Even the climate control system now works by touch control.
SPACIOUS REAR COMPARTMENT Rear-seat passengers are greeted by a generously-sized compartment offering levels of headroom and legroom that exceed expectations of a coupe. Integral head restraints for the front and rear seats add further to the sporting feel. The cut-out in the head restraints is a classy detail that references sporty BMW models from the current line-up. The rear seats extend the horizontal graphic emerging from the doors to create a lounge feel in the rear. Meanwhile, the outer seats reprise the dynamic form of the front seats, heightening the sporting flavour. They also use very little stitching, which further emphasises the clean and modern feel.
281
LUXURY LIVING POWER u
FURTHER DEVELOPED USER INTERFACE DESIGN WITH EXPERIENCE MODES The screen grouping with new BMW Curved Display provides a digital gateway into the electric age at BMW. Look and feel are clearly influenced by the latest electronic devices and have been made deliberately less “automotive” in nature. In the display itself, flat layers provide considerable visual depth. Overall, the BMW Curved Display and new presentation approach combine to provide a first-class content-viewing experience. Three different Experience Modes enable users to explore the various facets of the electric drive system and provide a look ahead – in terms of visuals at least – to the next-generation operating system from 2021. The sometimes emphasised visual differentiation between the three Experience Modes (“Core”, “Sport” and “Efficient”) spans everything from how the user experiences the display and graphics to how the interior is presented. Ambient lighting in the dashboard, doors and (indirectly) below the display indicate the technical adjustments taking place. 282 LUXURY LIVING
“Core” mode introduces the driver’s area to an updated interpretation of the four “widgets” familiar from the display concept of existing models. Here, the graphics reprise the pattern above the air vents and the Gold Bronze accent colour, consciously referencing the car’s interior design. In the area where the central display used to be positioned, a map and widgets now line up alongside one another. The user can navigate around the diagonal widgets using a swipe movement and arrange them intuitively by drag-and-drop. This allows them to adapt the display to their personal preferences.
In “Sport” mode, the “widgets” come closer together and create a focussed view. Sideways movements behind the zones are used to show how tight the next corner is, facilitating anticipatory driving. This form of content presentation also allows effective peripheral viewing. The right-hand area of the display shows specific functions in a similar way to BMW M’s lap timer app. “Efficient” mode debuts an “Assisted Driving View”, which shows the driver what the car’s sensors are detecting. This Experience Mode opens up deeper insights into the car’s technology, such as how it communicates with its surroundings. In the BMW Concept i4, the focus here is on anticipatory and efficient driving, and key information for efficient driving is incorporated. The right-hand area of the display shows additional vehicle information, such as the charge level and range

THE SOUND OF THE BMW CONCEPT i4 The BMW Concept i4 is not only characterised by its individual design, but also by its own visionary and unique sound. It was developed under the brand name of BMW IconicSounds Electric by world renowned composer Hans Zimmer together with BMW Sound Designer Renzo Vitale. BMW IconicSounds Electric aims to emotionalise BMW’s electric vehicles and make them audible using individual sound worlds. The sound of the BMW Concept i4 achieves this to perfection – it combines BMW’s past and future. It gives the driver the feeling that there are no limits of expression. The sound is manifold, surprising and it provides a sense of lightness and transparency. The sound worlds of the BMW Concept i4 range from the driving sounds in “Core” mode to the more intense and pronounced sounds of “Sport” mode. Also included are the sounds of the door opening and the starting scenario.
THE TECHNOLOGY AS EARMARKED FOR THE UPCOMING BMW I4. Fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology is a defining feature of the BMW i4 and therefore also of future electric mobility. The BMW iX3 due to go into production in 2020 will lead the way in the application of the new tech, which will be introduced in a number of electrically powered BMW vehicles – such as the BMW iNEXT and BMW i4. The electric motor, power electronics, charging unit and high-voltage battery using fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology are all-new developments enabling the BMW Group to take another significant step forward in the field of electrified drive systems. The electric motor developed for the BMW i4 generates maximum output of up to 390 kW/530 hp, which ranks it alongside a current BMW V8 combustion engine. Its instantaneous power delivery gives the BMW i4 standout performance attributes and exceptional efficiency.
The fifth generation of BMW eDrive also brings a newly designed high-voltage battery with the very latest battery cell technology. The version of the battery developed for the BMW i4 impresses with its extremely slim construction and optimised energy density. It weighs roughly 550 kilograms, has an energy content of around 80 kWh and achieves an operating range of up to 600 km in the WLTP cycle. All in all, fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology sets new standards in terms of power density, efficiency and range in locally emission-free driving.
SERIES PRODUCTION OF THE NEW BMW I4 Series production of the new BMW i4 will begin in 2021 at the BMW Group’s main plant in Munich. This means that, in the future, combustion-engined vehicles, plug-in hybrids and all-electric vehicles will be manufactured on the same assembly line in Munich.

In a market known for its multimilliondollar properties, sprawling Rockybrook Estate in Delray Beach stands alone— an epic residential statement unlike anything seen in South Florida
291
LUXURY LIVING PROPERTY u
Set in prestigious Stone Creek Ranch, an exclusive luxury community with only 37 estates, this 31,000-square-foot architectural marvel is an ode to both modern classicism and throw-
back glamour. In the same breath, the inviting seven-bedroom, 11-full-bath layout captivates
with family friendly flourishes that double as entertainment spaces. It’s the best of all worldssophisticated design, jaw-dropping detail and tangible warmth, flawlessly executed under one roof and only priced at a mere £23.5 million.
Conceptualized by Brenner Architecture, Rockybrook dazzles at first dramatic sight with a grand foyer and custom-designed open-arms staircase that recalls a scene from a Hollywood classic offering a hint at what’s to come with space after space stirring the senses.
A stately living room with marble flooring and 32-foot walls a dining room that seats 16 with
white agate backlit walls and white mother-of-pearl ceiling treatment. There is a glass-encased, temperature-controlled wine room a Zen-like garden area with a waterfall treatment and koi pond and original lighting fixtures by the likes of artists Dale Chihuly and Nicolas Terzani.
292 LUXURY LIVING
A long hallway off the foyer eventually leads to
a gourmet Downsview kitchen with state-of-
the-art appliances; a striking double-column, stainless-steel range hood; and a separate island
counter with seating for six and playfully over-
sized lighting. And that’s not even the only place to prepare meals—Rockybrook also boasts a separate commercial catering kitchen.
293
LUXURY LIVING PROPERTY u
Upstairs, the master bedroom has its own separate wing, including a study lounge and kitchenette. The main balcony of the suite features a fireplace, whirl-
pool bath and sun deck, all overlooking the property’s lush 2.5 acres and unrivalled outdoor spaces. Exquisite details also abound in the master baths; hers is adorned with amethyst and boasts a centre bathtub with a hanging crystal chandelier—and both baths have their own balconies.
294 LUXURY LIVING
u
For all of its eye-catching opulence, Rockybrook also manages to enchant with a resort-like vibe that
makes every day feel like a getaway. Look no further than the 250,000-gallon heated pool with black mosaic glass waterline tile and a black Pebble Tec finish, an ode to the infinity-edge splendour at Wynn Las Vegas. The tropically landscaped pool area—complete with waterfalls, fire pits, a covered
pavilion and dining area, a grotto with a rain feature, and a fully equipped summer kitchen—provides an entertainment epicentre for all seasons. But that’s hardly the only place to play at Rockybrook.

The estate also features a club room with a bar, card table and billiards table; a cigar room; a cinema-
style theatre room—and even a two-lane bowling alley in the massive children’s lounge. Rockybrook also sports health and beauty areas, including a spa treatment room, salon, gym and sauna, a championship tennis court, and a blissful meditation space overlooking the tropical garden. The residence also is designed with hurricane-resistant windows, doors and exterior construction. In addition, it comes with a Creston smart home system and security cameras.

A sUstAinABle lUXUry destinAtion Ultimately, the Heart of Europe is set to become one of the most scenic and experiential luxury destinations in the Middle-East
and the world. The project, which combines high levels of sustainability with innovation, will add 15 atmospheric and highly
differentiated hotels to the Dubai offering, 4,000 holiday homes
and strong investor options including the iconic Floating Seahorse Villas and the beachfront boutique hotels at Cote d’Azur and Portofino resorts.
With sustainability at its core, the Heart of Europe will see the development of more than 500,000 square metres of coral reefs and feature Spanish olive trees that are between 100 and 1,500
years old that were sourced from Andalusia, a region in Spain’s southern coast, and the world’s first climate controlled rainy street and snow plaza. The island will host magnificent hanging gardens on the façade of the Portofino inspired hotel with an
astonishing 31,000 plants. It will also offer sustainable entertain-
ment with zero emissions with no harm to nature such as hologram circus and synchronized swimming shows.
The Heart of Europe will also deploy sustainable landscaping that will be pesticide free, fungicide free and will be showered
with recycled water. The island is also committed to be totally car
free, use clean energy and will eventually offer sustainable water transportation to the guests.
Lastly, to complete the empathetic hospitality and meaningful ‘island time’ experiences, the destination hotels will be touch-
less. The fully integrated hospitality app will enable the guests to
manage entertainment and dining reservations across the desti-
nation directly from their mobiles or to monitor and customize their preferred lightning or temperature settings in their suites on the spot without having to place a call or any waiting time.
