On behalf of the dedicated team that lives the mission of the Downtown Billings Alliance, including our two Billings Police Department Resource Officers, greetings and thank you for supporting a vibrant, clean, safe and growing city center, Downtown Billings. In looking back over the nine years I have worked for downtown Billings, the recurrent theme for every good and successful initiative or campaign that we have achieved has been brokered through successful partnerships. And so for nine years, I’ve been honored to work with the best: the City of Billings, Billings

City Council, Billings Police Department, Yellowstone County Commission, Downtown Property Owners, the membership of the Association, Parking Advisory Board, Big Sky Economic Development, Faith Leaders, Billings Cultural Partners, and many more. Together we continue to create what I think is one of the most significant transformations and growth opportunities Billings has ever seen. As always, in order to ensure success, the most senior public officials must be willing to be actively involved, and they are. In 2014 the Alliance kicked off the renewal campaign for the

Business Improvement District. To go back through my documents and photos and see the BID in its infancy, and then to see the amount of progress and the difference that our stakeholders have made in downtown is quite staggering. I am just so proud of the program and confident that there will be so much more to come. Thank you, Billings, for your support of The Downtown Billings Alliance and remember, the Next Ten Starts with you! Lisa K. Harmon Executive Director Downtown Billings Alliance

Saturday morning market returns July 19 The area under Skypoint will again be buzzing with vendors and customers alike between the hours of 8 a.m. and noon each Saturday this summer. The Farmers’ Market returns to downtown Billings on Saturday, July 19 and continues through Oct. 4. The Farmers’ Market is a mix of outdoor shopping with unique one-of-a-kind goods. Local vendors and area farmers offer baked goods, prepared foods and fresh fruits and vegetables. Not solely limited to large farmers, a neighborhood table is available for people with garden goods to sell. Those interested in obtaining booth space at either event may call the Yellowstone Valley Farmers’ Market at 406-855-1299 or 406-697-5295. Downtown project spruces up signal boxes The Downtown Billings Alliance has launched a campaign to foster Public Art installations in downtown Billings. The fi rst project is a Traffic Signal Box Wrap initiative that will transform downtown signal boxes into works of art. Six artists were selected for the fi rst phase of this project; their original art will be digitally applied to vinyl product and installed by AlphaGraphics of Billings, Montana. The selection committee, comprised of members of the Public Art Committee, the City of Billings Public Works Department, the Business Improvement District, the Billings Police Department, the Downtown Billings Association and the Downtown Billings Partnership, chose local artists with a variety of backgrounds and styles. The

featured artists are Lynn Thorpe, Louis Habeck, Charlotte Kelley, Andrew Hauck, Tyson Middle, and Vincent Sanchez. This project is being funded by the Downtown Billings Alliance, in conjunction with the City of Billings Public Works Department and private individual and business contributions from Expert Tire, and Maisie Sulser of A&E Architects. The second Traffic Signal Box is located on the northeast corner of 3rd Avenue North and North Broadway in downtown Billings. Similar initiatives have succeeded in other Montana cities such as Missoula and Bozeman as a way to add vibrancy and enrich the streetscape through public art, and reduce graffiti, poster, and sticker vandalism.

› Billings Mustangs

Celebrate summer with Downtown Night at the Mustangs Downtown Night at the Mustangs is Downtown Billings’ longest running event. This year, join us Monday, July 28, at 7:05 p.m., as the Billings Mustangs play the Helena Brewers. Giveaways and promotions will be featured during the game donated by Downtown merchants and businesses. Dehler Park has picnic areas for families

and large groups, a cool merchandise shop and concessions that offer brats, burgers, soft drinks, beer and mojito coolers. You can walk the entire field thanks to an outfield terrace which is home to those who buy standing room only tickets. Tickets can be purchased at the Dehler Park ticket office or by going to www.billingsmustangs.com and clicking on tickets.

Dehler Park is renowned in the Pioneer League for the “Beer Batter.” Every game, the Mustangs Beer Boosters designate one player as the “Beer Batter.” If that player gets a hit, attendees can buy four beers for $10. Many eager buyers stand at the stairs anticipating a hit and the oncoming rush of people. Come celebrate the season with us at Downtown Night at the Mustangs!

› Downtown resource officers

New officers serving the downtown community If you ask Tony Nichols and Matt Lennick how they like their work, they’ll say the same thing: They love it. “It’s a pretty sweet gig,” Nichols said Wednesday in their office at the Downtown Billings Alliance, 2815 Second Ave. N. He and Lennick recently took over as the two downtown resource officers. They police the Business Improvement District’s “Safe Zone,” an area that stretches roughly from South Park to St. Vincent Healthcare and from North 32nd Street to North Park. And Nichols and Lennick aren’t the only ones who love the impact they’re having downtown. “They’re part psychologist, part cop and part public relations people, and they just do a remarkable job,” said Gary Buchanan, co-owner of Buchanan Capital, 201 N. Broadway. “They’ve changed downtown immensely.” Nichols and Lennick — who are easily recognizable by their bright yellow uniforms — have taken over for Shane Winden and Harley Cagle, the first two downtown resource officers. Winden was promoted to sergeant in the Billings Police Department last summer and Cagle chose to return to patrol. The program, which first paid an officer’s salary in 2009, is a unique public-private partnership, said Lisa Harmon, executive director of the Downtown Billings Alliance, which spearheaded the endeavor. “I think it’s a really great investment,” Buchanan said. “I hope we keep doing it.”

Billings is nicknamed the Magic City because of its rapid growth from its founding as a railroad town in 1882. Billings is named for Frederick H. Billings, president of the Northern Pacific Railroad and is the largest city in Montana with a population of approximately 101,000 within the city limits and another 40,000 in surrounding Yellowstone County. Billings’ trade market area is geographically one of the largest in the nation drawing approximately 250,000 people from Montana, Wyoming, South Dakota and North Dakota. It is the retail, medical, convention and educational center serving a 500-mile radius. Billings is the region’s cultural hub. Performing arts theaters, the symphony, opera, history

and art museums, a zoo, historic district and numerous arts and crafts galleries offer a rich cultural experience for residents and visitors. Fine, ethnically-diverse cuisine, espresso and sidewalk cafes, boutique specialty shopping, bookshops, antique stores, and an abundance of events invite you to stroll and experience. Our grassroots committees are an excellent way for community members to help make a difference in Downtown Billings! They are defined by the coming-together of volunteers who have a love and passion for the place where they live, and a drive to see it thrive. These will be focused and quickly-executed projects that will make a significant and lasting impression on the community.

To donate Your contribution to our grassroots programs is fully tax deductible. Log on to www. downtownbillings.com/grassroots for more information on the grassroots committees — Bicycle-friendly Downtown, Pocket Parks, Mural Walls and Public Art — and how to donate.

Do you have a love of biking? Art? Spending time outdoors? We want your passion and talent to help make our Downtown a better place for everyone!

› Spare Change

Change program raises money for homeless Spare Change for Real Change was formed in 2005 as an education and outreach program to help the public understand that money given to panhandlers is all too often used to feed an addiction rather than improve the situation of the individual. Steps taken include leading the way on implementing a new ordinance in the city of Billings making it harder to panhandle. To compliment that step, spare change began collecting change in boxes placed in business around town and donating the money to local organizations that work directly with

the homeless population. In 2009, Downtown Billings and Spare Change held the first Purple 5K. We had about 130 runners and raised $3,500 dollars and granted it to VOA’s home for Homeless Veterans; St. Vincent

Since then, we have granted more than $35,000 to many other groups including HRDC, The Center for Children and Families, The Hub, Tumbleweed, Billings Community Connect, and the Housing Authority, among others. Due to the very low overhead of this race and the fact that the organizers are volunteers, your entry fee and the money given by sponsors is almost completely used for granting. Purple 5K and Downtown Crit fight homelessness The Downtown Billings Alliance, Clark Marten, and Back Country Chiropractic brought the fifth annual Purple 5K to Billings on Sunday, March 30. The Purple 5K run and the Crit continue to grow as they empower the community to be actively involved in the fight against homelessness. All proceeds from the races go to the Spare Change for Real Change program. Over the past five years, these events have grown such that, as of 2013, the Spare Change for Real Change program has granted $33,250 to local organizations that work to alleviate homelessness through education, housing, social services, and re-integration. The race began at 9:00 a.m. Sunday morning at Grandview Park, then went down through Pioneer Park, wound through some downtown neighborhoods, and finished under Skypoint. Following the race there were snacks, beverages, music, and an awards ceremony. The top three male and female winners in each age group got to donate $25, $15 and $10 to the nonprofit/charity of their choice. This year we had around 500 people register. We are hoping, along with the Downtown Crit, to reach a goal of $20,000 to grant out at the end of 2014.

The Purple 5K along with the Downtown Crit continue to grow as they empower the community to be actively involved in the fight against homelessness.

The Downtown Criterium bike race is loosely scheduled for Aug. 24. There are two divisions in the Crit, Expert and Beginner. Beginners race for 30 minutes and Experts race for 45 minutes. The cyclists are to complete as many laps as fast as they can in the time given. The one with the most laps in that time is the winner. If a there is a tie, then it comes down to lap times. Following the race there will be music, food, local beer and an awards ceremony.

LOOKING FINE AT 50 YAM marks milestone with variety of events By JACI WEBB jwebb@billingsgazette.com

LARRY MAYER/Gazette Staff

The Visible Vault was constructed in 2010, allowing the YAM to showcase its extensive permanent collection and provide space for artists in residence.

The Yellowstone Art Museum, the longest-operating contemporary art museum in Montana, is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2014 with free days, a birthday bash in June and a gala event on Nov. 7. “50 years is a huge milestone,” special-events coordinator Adam Restad said. That’s why the YAM, 401 N. 27th St., decided to pull out all the stops. On June 14, the birthday bash runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and includes a free kids’ day at the museum. All are welcome to create art at various art booths, paint on large-scale canvases, doodle on the sidewalk, purchase food and beverages or watch the pinata drop every hour. “Ultimately, our goal with the events surrounding the 50th is to provide artistic outlets for our patrons and to show the community how accessible the museum is,” Restad said. The YAM has been a cultural destination for half a century, and through special program-

ming throughout the anniversary year, the museum staff hopes to encourage artistic growth and the exchange of ideas in Billings and Montana. The YAM, which opened as the Yellowstone Art Center, held its grand opening reception on Oct. 18, 1964. In those early years, the Art Center operated with a staff of three and an annual budget of $70,000. It opened in the former Yellowstone County Jail. A $6.2 million remodel was completed in 1998 after the Yellowstone Art Museum was presented with the Governor’s Award for Service to the Arts. The Visible Vault was constructed in 2010, allowing the YAM to showcase its extensive permanent collection and provide space for artists in residence. Robyn Peterson, executive director of the YAM, and her staff have been planning special events throughout the year, including a free admission day on July 19. On June 28, the museum will host a vintage vehicle show from Please see YAM, page 18

Zoo Continued from 19 a renaissance festival to ancientstyle games. And that doesn’t even include the zoo’s ever-present, most popular activity — checking out the more than 100 animals representing 56 species. All summer, a number of walks and runs — only one of them sponsored by the zoo — will be held on the 72-acre grounds. It starts with the cystic fibrosis walk on June 28, followed by the National Alliance on Mental Illness walk on August 3. On Sept. 3, the March of Dimes will hold a walk and there will be an Alzheimer’s walk at the zoo on Sept. 21. “It’s just kind of a community gathering spot,” Ewelt said. For the first time, ZooMontana will also host its own walk, called Run Wild, on June 22. The event is a 5K run on the zoo grounds, with proceeds benefiting the zoo. “We do several races here throughout the year and thought we’d give it a try ourselves,” Ewelt said. One of the most popular events hosted at the zoo, the Montana Renaissance Festival, will be held June 6-8. Billed as the largest event of its kind in the region, the festival aims to recreate a 16th-century European country fair. The annual event includes food, dancers, performances, people in full costume and a full-

contact jousting tournament. “The lanes are bustling with storytellers, musicians, singers, dancers and villagers welcoming you to a festive day of living history,” according to the event’s website. “The air is filled with the scents and smells of foods from the Renaissance period. Feast like royalty on juicy roasted turkey legs, royal Scottish eggs, steak on a stake and more.” This year, organizers and the zoo have decided to separate the festival from another popular event, the Yellowstone Highland Games and Festival. That event will now be held on June 21 and features athletic competitions, games, food and pipes and drums a June 20th kickoff concert with The Young Dubliners. “We decided to separate them to give them their own identity and be able to focus on each event,” Ewelt said. Of course, the zoo’s main attraction — the animals — will be on display all throughout the summer and spring. Those looking to check it out on a budget with the kids can attend the annual Family Fun Day, which features $1 admission along with games, activities and other surprises. The zoo will also continue work on upgrading and adding facilities, including a renovation of its soon-to-be-filled tiger exhibit and a new trout pond and bird of prey enclosure. “It’s going to be hopping out LLOYD BLUNK/Gazette Staff here all the time,” Ewelt said. First-time mother Holly, a bighorn sheep, recently gave birth. “It’ll be bouncing.”

Period dresses are on display at the Big Horn County Historical Museum.

Gallery redesign enhances Big Horn County Historical Museum By MIKE FERGUSON mferguson@billingsgazette.com Staff at the Big Horn County Historical Museum spent April redoing and rearranging the gallery in preparation for a May 1 reopening date. A spate of recent donations, including a 1921 Ford Model T nicknamed “Ophelia Bumps,” has kept the staff busy preparing the gallery for the busy summer season, according to museum director Diana Scheidt. Scheidt said he Model T is the same make and model that Effie Hazel Hoover Orser drove beginning in the 1920s while ministering on the Crow Reservation. “Our thought process has always been to put together the Native American and military influences” of historical importance to Big Horn County, Scheidt said. “It brings the gallery together as a whole.” Hence, a large, colorful tepee from the

late Robbie Yellowtail is placed nearby an impressive military memorabilia collection and a model of what Fort Custer looked like on March 31, 1892 — all 129 buildings of it. “It was a large fort,” Scheidt said, with considerable understatement. “People love it, but there’s nothing left of it.” Artists including Will James, Jim Bramlett and Joseph H. Sharp are prominently featured, as are dozens of architectural features and furniture from historic Big Horn County, including from the courthouse and from local businesses. The $3 million museum, paid for by local donors and $1 million from Big Horn County officials, was dedicated in April 2012. The gallery was opened in the summer of 2013, and some restoration work on featured museum pieces continues. Connolly Saddlery of Billings

Outside the gallery on the 35-acre grounds, connected by a boardwalk, are 26 restored buildings and exhibits, including the original museum building, which is becoming, as Scheidt called it, “buggy headquarters”; a barn and blacksmith shop; Will James’ studio and cabins; a replica of a coal mine; the Lodge Grass De-

Downtown Billings is hopping this summer By SUSAN OLP solp@billingsgazette.com Downtown Billings is a lively place to be in the summer, especially if you’re into food or music, or both. Annual events such as the Strawberry and the Magic City Blues festivals are always crowd favorites. So is the weekly farmers’ market, which kicks off in mid-July. New this year downtown is Barjon’s Art & Soul Festival, while the Downtown Billings Association’s longest-running event is Downtown Night with the Mustangs at Dehler Park. The various summer activities draw tens of thousands of people downtown, said Lisa Harmon, executive director of the DBA. The biggest one-day draw is probably the Strawberry Festival, set for June 14, Harmon said, attracting 10,000 people throughout the day. But every event lures a crowd, she said. Here are details about events slated for this summer in downtown Billings: Alive After 5: The outdoor concert series runs Thursday evenings at different venues, from June 5 through Aug. 28. The free concerts feature local bands, dancing, food and beverages. This year’s lineup includes: June 5: Lil’ Smokies at the Fieldhouse June 12: Maw Band at Don Luis June 19: The Clintons at The Depot June 26: Funk in the Trunk at McCormick Cafe July 3: Adam Ezra Group at Yellowstone Art Museum July 10: South Park Line at Walkers Grill July 17: Yabba Griffithes at Tiny’s Tavern July 24: Downtime at Monte Carlo July 31: Repeat Offenders at Montana Brewing Co. Aug. 7: The Big Caboose Allstars at Pug Mahon’s Aug. 14: Dirty Power at The Rex Aug. 21: Midlife Chrylsters at DBA Aug. 28: Cure for the Common at Stampede Strawberry Festival: June 14. It’s every strawberry-holic’s dream come true, a huge strawberry shortcake, piled high with whipped cream and fresh strawberries. It kicks off at 7:30 a.m. with a pancake breakfast, and then, starting at 8 a.m., more than 100 arts, crafts and food booths open up to

The festival is a fundraiser for the Tibetan Children’s Education Foundation. Yellowstone Valley Farmers Market: The 28th edition of the farmers’ market kicks off July 19 and runs Saturdays, from 8 a.m. to noon, through Oct. 4.
