Editorial I would like to thank those that have written to me in support of the work I do for the BDPNV. I appreciate the messages greatly.

But I am not naïve and I have not taken on this voluntary position of Editor without understanding that you cannot please everyone.

Currently I work really hard, from dawn to dusk most days with my two businesses yet I still find the time to help the Church and local communities through this publication.

So that you know, I tend to check BDPNV emails around ‘magazine’ time and periodically in between so it is not uncommon for any email response from me to be a tad delayed.

I am politically neutral within the community.

I also have a transparent open door policy and my heart is in a good place, my number is freely available and I am happy to join residents at gatherings.

If you find yourself unhappy with anything I do or write, please pick up the phone and call me, I am super approachable.

Memory

this feels different but its ok for now. Funny thing is, I remember who owes me money very well lol I am learning to manage my memory better, and I now use tools to improve things, however, I still do forget – more than I would like.

You might be asking why am I talking about something so personal to me?

Have you ever come across social media Memes that read like this, “Be kind. You never know what battle the person beside you is fighting”… well, be kind.

If I have missed a meeting or forgotten to email or call you, I encourage you to reach out – drop a reminder. I find this helps immensely.

I have always had a bit of a bad memory. My wife puts it down to how busy I am, or how many plates I might be spinning at any one time.

Since I turned 50 I have noticed a memory loss more than just simple absent-mindedness.

Over the past year or so it has got worse and Thanks again to those that give me support it has occasionally got me into trouble with people even though it is completely innocent and encouragement. on my part. I am genuinely upset if my forgetting has upset somebody else.

Church news At a time of much change, your church wardens, Andrea and Keith are very keen to keep our lovely old parish church of St John the Baptist in the forefront of our village life.

I am sure that everyone now knows that the Revd Alison Booker has left our parish to take up a position of Archdeacon of Oakham in the Peterborough Diocese , we wish her every success in the next stage of her ministry.

Now that Covid restrictions are beginning to be eased,it is hoped that we shall be able to return to a more “Normal”pattern of service.

The Church Choir Yes, we do still exist!

It’s been a while since I have written anything about the church choir in these pages. It’s two years since we had to stop- abruptly- in March, 2020. We had a brief, and depressing, falsestart, the following Christmas, before a gradual return over summer 2021, singing three hymns per week, and occasional musical extravaganzas, as confidence, and the everpresent “regulations”, allowed.

Last Christmas was pretty normal, and 2022 has so far started well, with plenty of music and fairly short services (a great combo, in my view!).

At full strength, we are back to double figures, but would love to welcome a few new faces.

Billesdon church is a fairly welcoming set up.

Music is at the heart of what we do, and a big part of our mission is to offer musical training to all who wish for it. We currently have a new organ scholar, and four younger choir members, together with our 8 adults, and me, Simon, the organist.

Thanks to the generosity of parishioners, we have started to pay Choral Bursaries to our under-18's, to reward their hard work and loyalty to the choir.

There is room for a few more singers of any age. We practise on a Friday, 7-pm, and sing on a Sunday morning (10.40-am practice for an 11-am service, which lasts between 30 and 50 mins). Everyone supported the concept that the venue is to be the village green and car park area.

An outline schedule was tabled; · Village Fete - 12 noon to 14.00 hrs · Village Picnic/Tea Party (tables/chairs/sandwich/cakes/ice cream) - 14.00 hrs to 16.00 hrs · BBQ at the Coplow + cheap beer 17.00 to 19 hrs plus

Queen’s Platinum Jubilee: In order to determine exactly what Billesdon Village hopes to do to celebrate this important occasion, everyone was invited to an informal discussion at the Coplow Center on Saturday last to share views. The objective of the session was to produce a framework for the event so that all interested parties could make plans knowing that they fitted into an agreed plan.

At the outset the position of the Village Fete was discussed as it had not been held for the last two years. Under normal circumstances the Fete should have been held within two or three weeks of the Jubilee. However, the Church proposed that the two events be combined this year as a practical solution to a possible conflict. This proposal was supported.

Various other possible additions to the four days were discussed but, as we are limited by the pairs of hands available in the village to complete a one day celebration, it was agreed that we should put all resources into making that one day the best it can be.

The general consensus is that the adults attending the Tea Party in the afternoon should bring their own food or get supplies from the hot dog/burger stall.

Clearly, for the day to be memorable as many people as possible will need to help, and, if you want to play a part, below are contact details of some of the people involved in the various parts of the day.

After much discussion the general consensus was that a single day celebration would be held on the SATURDAY 4th to combine the elements of the Fete and a Jubilee Celebration.

The Chapel Centre

With much respect to the late Barry Cryer (who was a great comedian) I love to hear one song to the tune of another, even better is one worship song to the tune of another. I came across a great one the other day – the words of ‘O Jesus I have promised’ (a song we sang at our wedding!) to the theme tune of the Muppets Show (sadly we didn’t use this tune!) Go on try it, here are the words: O Jesus, I have promised To serve thee to the end; Be thou forever near me, My Master and my friend; I shall not fear the battle If thou art by my side, Nor wander from the pathway If thou wilt be my guide.

There is a verse in the bible that explains what worship is all about: “Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as worship”. Now that is worship, much more than just singing. We will be looking into this over the next few weeks at the Chapel.

A few cold and frosty mornings lured me, plus camera, down to the pool, and on one occasion I stayed behind for another hour after taking my regular shots. After scattering some bird seed I settled down with my back to a tree, in an attempt to blend into the landscape, and waited. It wasn’t long before the first bird arrived and unsurprisingly it was a/the Robin - as if it doesn’t get fed enough! Trying to stay still, or not make any sudden movement, I usually heard the birds chuntering before I saw them arrive, the first one to come into my peripheral vision being a Great Tit (pic).

Gradually it progressed through through the vegetation before working its way down the twigs to the food. Grabbing a seed the bird flew off to a nearby branch

where it sat and ate.

The same sequence happened with the Blue Tit, though it was much warier and if another bird flew close it would fly off before returning to try again.

Deep in the undergrowth I could see a pair of Dunnock who, like little mice, nervously edged closer and closer to the food, but never got as far as taking any seed before scuttling back to the safety of the bushes. I was also interested to watch the Robin regularly re-appearing to seemingly deliberately discourage the other birds. Overall I considered my visit successful as I achieved some nice photographs of the tits plus it was a useful exercise in observing the behaviour of the various bird species.

Goadby Gleanings Local residents and readers of the Parish magazine will be familiar with G.T.Doughty, “Probably the best butchers in Tugby”. The business started in 1892 in Skeffington moving, prior to the First World War, to the premises that are still occupied by the current proprietor, Gary Gregg. Readers will be saddened to know that come the end of March G.T.Doughty will be no more. The company was founded by Fred Doughty. He was joined by his son George Thomas (hence the G.T.) and in turn George’s son John. Gary was apprenticed to John when he was 16 and Gary took over the Butchery in 1994 with a shake of the hand.

Those familiar with the shop in Tugby will know that it stands in front of the abattoir from which all produce for the shop was prepared.

The butchery business thrived during the 20th century with the animals all being bred and cared for on local farms. As well as supplying the shop for local customers, pubs and restaurants in the area benefited from the produce. From the date of Gary’s ownership, the business employed two in the abattoir and with Gary in the shop most of the time supported by Martin; Doreen provided cooked pies and rolls. When Helen left her job teaching she replaced Doreen.

From the early years of Gary’s ownership there was a progressive increase in trade, however, a number of events and social changes altered that significantly. The Foot and Mouth epidemic followed by the investigations into BSE, brought about a dramatic change in the method of operation and in costs. Regulations to check on the health of animals brought for slaughter, and on the parts of the carcase that were available for consumption, meant that the butcher had to employ Veterinary surgeons and Meat Inspectors at considerable additional cost to the business. Strict rules governed the

disposal of material not suitable for human consumption. These combined to force the closure of small slaughterhouses. Following these catastrophic diseases, came the changes within rural communities and the expansion of supermarkets. Local businesses showed a general decline from then onwards. One contrary event was the Covid pandemic.

During the initial lock down, and before the supermarkets established their home deliveries, Gary saw a great increase in customers but this did not last. The role of the single outlet business in an isolated community is not viable.

G.T.Doughty will be missed, but, as Gary says, he has no complaints and is grateful for the life he and Helen have established. Change is inevitable and we must all move with the times.

The property is owned by John’s widow, Janet, and will no doubt see further changes. We thank Gary for his support to the community and for advertising in this magazine for so long; it really was the best butcher in Tugby!

Village People no. 137 Lee Burbidge So we know he has taken on the job and we’re all pleased about that – but who is this new editor? I’ve been investigating.

Lee is a Leicester boy who describes himself as a council estate kid who left school to work in the printing trade. He says he always wanted to start his own business without knowing what it would be. He remembers as a child sitting in the office of his uncle’s printing business pretending to answer business calls and filing away imaginary documents.

His first attempts at ‘the business thing’ were as a freelance graphic designer and then later setting himself up as a cartoonist. He was the ‘Monday Smile’ in the Leicester Mercury for a year or so. He would also sell illustrations for greeting cards and cartoons for the tabloids.

He first came to this area in 2001, when he moved into a rented cottage in Billesdon. He then bought his first house in Leicester in 2003 from where he built up his business ‘High Shine Ltd’ from the bottom up. At its height he had a staff of sixty. This success enabled him to buy a house in Skeffington along with other investment properties. He moved to Skeffington in December 2011 and has lived there ever since. He said ‘I like the area, the walks, the fact I can come home and shut out the world. My neighbours are super cool and supportive and I clean windows for a few of the houses in the villages.’

Factory in China

I found myself on the cover of other trade magazines in the market and ours was even featured on ‘Have I Got News For You?’ Then there was the week he spent filming in Italy for a week-long show on ITV called ‘Hello Campers’ with his friend Richard, also a window cleaner. A year ago he was asked to appear on BBC's ‘The One Show’. Ian Hislop and Paul Merton were there to plug their new series of ‘Have I Got News For You? Lee was there with two other editors and Ian and Paul had to guess the titles of their magazines by a series of questions. The Window Cleaning Magazine has taken Lee around the world including China, where he got to visit a factory that makes the water-fed poles that window cleaners use now.

And finally the crunch question. How is he finding the editor job? For someone with a young family and a full time job who is clearly putting a lot of time and energy into it, his response is encouraging ‘I really love the people that I am engaging with, a lot of them have a real passion for the community and it's this that excites me. It's my bit for the community.’

Ah yes. Window cleaning. And travelling. Lee takes up the story: ‘I started a magazine called Window Cleaning Magazine. This led to my travelling the world to attend events and trade shows. As founder and Well done Lee, keep up the good work! editor I became a point of interest and the go-to place Peter Francis to find out what is new in the industry.

Billesdon Cricket Club

Preparations are well under way for the new cricket season at Billesdon Cricket Club.

Senior team indoor net practice sessions have been taking place each week since the start of January. These sessions are open to both existing and new members. Please contact us if you are new to the area and interested in playing senior cricket at Billesdon.

Billesdon’s Junior section is hoping to expand in 2022 and field teams this summer at Under 10, 11, 13 and 15 age groups.

The junior cricketers at Billesdon this year will again benefit from professional coaching with sessions being run by Tom Flowers Cricket Coaching. Tom, an ECB Level 3 coach and former player at Leicestershire CCC and his team provide professional cricket coaching for all ages and abilities.

Indoor junior coaching sessions are being run from February. The weekly outdoor sessions will take place at Coplow Lane on Thursday nights from April throughout the summer. In addition to learning and practising skills all the coaching sessions will focus on fun and enjoyment.

New junior members are always welcome and

it would be great to see more young players enjoying the benefit of the coaching and opportunities to play in games on offer.

Sticky Tables

There is nothing worse than sitting at a table in a pub or restaurant and finding ones’ hands or arms sticking to the table surface. Waiting staff have always been helpful in wiping tables between guests but the development of spray bottles of cleaning fluid has led to an accumulation of gunge on the surface.

Long gone is the day when waitresses used a scrubbing brush with soap and water to leave a clean wooden surface. Pubs and restaurants increasingly have tables which are varnished or have plastic surfaces. These attract soap and softens any existing varnish or paint. Along comes the next customer and, not only do their fingers stick to the table top, but so too do any papers belonging to the unsuspecting individual.

Cleaning of tables has become even more of a ritual with the implementation of strict hygiene associated with the Covid 19 rules. More and more bottles of spray fluid are being used in all businesses coming into contact with the public. What has happened to good old warm water, soap and a scrubbing brush?

There is nothing more welcoming in a pub or café than a bleached wooden table that has been scrubbed clean. The surface is smooth to the touch. Hands and clothes slide cleanly across the surface. It is possible to place a newspaper by your side without the back page sticking to the table top. The sleeves of your jacket don’t require to be freed every time you try to raise your glass. The owner of the hostelry gains as well. No more spray bottles to purchase, just water from the tap, a bar of soap and a scrubbing brush with a bit of elbow grease. The restaurant looks brighter without the table top engrained with yesterday’s beer slops. The natural wood surface displays the cutlery and table decoration to great effect. Ban the spray bottle and bring back sensible practicalities!

Here at school, it has been an interesting start to the month as we have been fully into the swing of the new Spring term but coping with the steady invasion of Covid cases.

Fortunately, through the diligence of school staff and the wonderful support of our parents, we made it to the half term break without having to resort to measures seen in local schools of the return to bubbles or whole classes working online from home. Having said that, the challenges of hybrid working where a group of children isolating at home access their classroom online were risen to excellently by the teaching staff and the benefits of maintaining social contact and educational progress has been much appreciated by our families. Hopefully, we will begin to see a more encouraging situation and a potential change in legislation as we move further into the Spring term.

The whole school has supported Children’s Mental Health Week (7-11 February) and have all completed activities around a theme of “Growing Together” which focused on physical, emotional and mental growth.

The children have been looking at how they have changed physically or in the skills they have gained since starting school; developed awareness of who or what has supported them in their growth – special people in families,

sports coaches and goals for life, such as riding a bike, tying shoelaces, learning an instrument, etc.

The whole school ended the week by wearing something that expressed something about themselves – a future aspiration or something they enjoy doing now – it started many conversations and we have high hopes for staffing the NHS in the future!

Additionally, within the same week, we celebrated Safer Internet Day. This is an important focus day annually and fits perfectly with the work on Mental Health and Wellbeing as it covers general safety online.

Joy and Peace Classes looked at behaviour online when playing on games and the importance of not sharing personal information. Hope and Faith classes also focused on behaviour when gaming which should always be respectful and considerate due to the difficulty in reading the inference in text communications. Year 6 completed the Local Authority Online Safety Survey which provides anonymised data on online usage and guides future safety education and safeguarding training.

After half term, we are looking forward to competing in the Harborough area competition final for Y5/6 Basketball – wish us luck!

The times they are a changing.

There’s a change going on around these parts. No I’m not referring to climate change or Covid. I’m talking about something far more local and subtle. It’s to do with an ageing population and the consequential prospects for a number of village initiatives in Billesdon and probably beyond.

In the business world there’s a lot of focus on preparing for the future as well as concentrating on the present. It’s called a succession plan. It means that even while things are hopefully going well at present, it’s wise to put things in place to prepare for the inevitable changes that will have to take place over time. And here’s my headline: we don’t have one here!

A quick scan over the personnel involved in running the multitude of groups, committees and activities centred on Billesdon, to take just one example, will tell you three things.

There has been a fairly small caucus of people involved over the years, they are all getting older and they are not being replaced by many healthy younger recruits coming on from the substitutes bench. And to take the football analogy a step further, if this goes on like Leicester City this season, players fall by the wayside with injuries, there are few replacements available and so things start to crumble.

I wonder what you think as you read this. Do you agree? Are we storing up problems for ourselves? What should be done to halt the slide and keep things rolling along?

Following your article on the WP and the great points highlighted and raised by Susie did you receive any comments? I was wondering if you or she had received any offers of volunteers?

I unfortunately have been unable to visit the site to assess it properly but I am aware that it requires some attention and if as a community we are not able to maintain it we should probably remove it for H&S reasons.

I feel that it would be a shame to lose this facility, particularly if we could encourage the school and the children to take advantage of this opportunity.

I understand there are basically two trains of thought, one is that it encourages rowdy behaviour within a wildlife setting and it can encourage anti-social behaviour.

I think that the whole area could be used better and as an educational tool for the young to help them be more ecologically and environmentally aware. Anyway, I intend to raise these questions at our meeting and as it's their responsibility they need to be aware.

It will need sorting as to what happens, we can either make it good or remove it for safety reasons and perhaps anti-social questions. Hopefully this'll generate more interest and volunteers.
