Publicly Funded Child Care helps caretakers pay for their child care costs. Families participating in the Publicly Funded Child Care program are required to pay a portion of their child care costs to their child care provider each billing cycle.

Eligibility for Publicly Funded Child Care is based on GROSS INCOME and FAMILY SIZE. Parents must be participating in an approved activity such as...

• Employment • School or Vocational Program • Approved work activity Children remain eligible for the program until age 13. Children with special needs may remain eligible until age 18.

How Do I Choose a Child Care Provider?

Many parents are concerned about leaving their child in the care of someone they don’t know. These concerns are perfectly natural. The best way to feel more comfortable is to be well informed and select a child care provider you trust and best meets your needs.

What are the types of child care providers available to choose from?

There are three types of providers available to choose from:

• Licensed Centers A child care center is any facility that cares for more than 12 children at a time. Child care centers are licensed through the Ohio Department of Job & Family Services.

• Certified Type B Homes

What if my child gets ill?

A Type B Child Care home is a private residence certified by the County Job & Family Services to care for up to six children. If an individual wishes to become a Certified Type B Provider they can contact SCJFS at (330) 451-8440.

Be sure to ask about the provider’s illness policy.

How flexible is your work schedule when your child is ill? Most child care centers cannot care for a child when they are ill, whereas most child care homes will continue to care for a mildly ill child.

What factors to consider when deciding on my provider?

Does the location fit my needs?

Child Safety - All provider types are required to meet health, fire and safety standards. All child care providers are inspected at least twice a year to make sure these standards are maintained.

Is your child care provider in a convenient enough location to you should you need to be there at any time? Is your provider near your work or home?

What hours best fit my needs?

Education

Most licensed child care centers are open Monday through Friday, from 6:30 A.M. to 6:00 PM. Only a few child care centers are open evenings and weekends.

Ask your provider for copies of lesson plans and activity sheets to see what they do on a daily basis.

A quality child care program can help with your child’s development. Both centers and homes can have excellent educational and enrichment programs.

Type A Licensed and Type B Certified homes are typically open seven days a week, and operate during most if not all hours of the day.

Publicly Funded Child Care Eligibility Maximum Monthly Gross Income Per Family Size

Age of Child Child care centers typically care for children between the ages of two and five. Fewer centers care for infants. Many child care homes care for children age infant through school age. Child care centers usually group children together according to age. Child care homes generally have children of all ages grouped together.
