BILLABONG STUDENTS CLEAN UP VILLINGILI By Aminath Aini Musthaq (Grade 4-B)

On March 2nd, the Nature club students went to Villingili to clean the beach. A total of 21 students were accompanied by Ms. Eda, Ms. Carol, Tom Sir and Mr. Matthew. We were divided into seven groups. Each group was given a big black bag to put the trash in. Aina, Abza and I were in a group together. We collected plastic bottles, foam, slippers, juice packets and paper that were left on to the beach! We had a great time at the beach and were very impressed with all the black bags we had filled up with rubbish. We were so pleased to have helped make the beach a cleaner and safer place to visit.

THE SCHOLAR’S CUP 2013 IN DUBAI On the 13th of March, 7 students from our school flew to Dubai along with James Sir and Reena Miss, to participate in the international competition, the “Scholar’s Cup”. With over 200 participants participating in it, we were one of the schools that took part in it for the first time. Not only was it our school, but it was also the first time a school from the Maldives took part in this competition.

The tournament itself wasn’t too serious and wasn’t too nerve racking. It felt more like a bunch of activities that were there for enjoyment or more expo style. Students dazzle with Kathak Dance Performance

Laërtius

by Priyanshu Singh (Grade 6-A)

Random Trivia

Gold is so rare that the world pours more steel in an hour than it has poured gold since the beginning of recorded history.

I like classical dance therefore I am learning Kathak. It is the eighth form of classical dances of India. I knew that this dance is popular in northern parts of India. I am learning it at the Indian cultural center in Male’. Our teacher, Miss Sharda had a big role in making us successful in performing at Billabong High International School. We performed there to show the people that dance is nothing easy, but something which can only be learned through rigorous practice. We performed the technical parts of Kathak. I had a great time practising the dance with my friends. We were practising the dance with full interest and energy. For the program we packed our things to perform. On the day of the

performance we went there for stage practice. Then we freshened up and went to a room to get ready for the dance. The costumes were awesome! My friends and I then went to our elders to transform our hair into a “juna” style. I went to our Miss to fix it properly. She made my hair look really beautiful. We applied some makeup and wore jewelry. Then we snapped some photographs. After that our chief guest, High Commissioner of India, Mr. Dhyaneshwar M. Mulay came into the school hall. After he and the principal of Billabong addressed the gathering, we began our cultural programs with a yoga performance. This was followed by a short speech by Miss. Sharda and

then it was our Kathak performance. We performed very – very well. After our performance Rajasthani folk was presented to the audience. That was followed by Tabla by Ustad Islam Khan. The High Commissioner and the principal applauded us, giving wonderful praise to our performances. After the performance, we took a sigh of relief knowing everything had gone well. I enjoyed the show very much.

Welcome to the Student Gallery Learning is a treasure that will follow its owner everywhere. ~Chinese Proverb

Mr. Matthew took Grade 4 on a trip to prehistoric times to discover interesting facts about dinosaurs, and to hopefully discover some new ones. For her assignment, Raaniya from 4-B ventured deep into the Jurassic period in a quest to find a dinosaur not yet uncovered by paleontologists. During her adventure, she discovered and drew the very first image of the Mussaurus. A creature which was small in size but was as deadly as it was beautiful.

Zuha Ashraf Ali from Grade 2-B wrote a very charming tale about her grandmother enjoying a fishing trip.

Themika from 3-C created a stunning picture of a ship sailing out to sea. Let’s hope it doesn’t run into pirates. Yaaarrgghhh!!!!

Sports Highlights All of the participants of the MNDF Road Race finished the race. Most of them completed their run around Male in less than 35 minutes, a nice achievement! The Badminton Inter School Tournament finished. Despite losing many of our big shots of last year, we had some hopes for the medals. Our expectations partially came through. Nobody was a match for Devanshi’s skills in the U9 category. Alisha showed some promise as well, but Devanshi was too much for her. Gold and silver for Billabong! Afsha and Zuha came out on top in the U16 girls doubles category and Afsha only met her match in the U16 girls singles in the final, bringing our total to 2 golden and 2 silver medals. Well done and we hope some more boys will step up as well next year!

Movie Night: Dolphin Tale Movie night was a fun and enjoyable night for all of the 5th graders. We got ready to go to watch a showing of ‘Dolphin Tale’ in the school hall. We were allowed to bring something comfortable to sit on, like cushions or mats and we brought the snacks we wanted, like popcorn, chips and more. All of us enjoyed the movie thoroughly. ‘Dolphin Tale’ is an interesting movie about a dolphin called Winter who loses its tail in a crab trap. The story shows the loyalty and friendship between the dolphin and the boy who helped to save it from certain death. We enjoyed the movie night a lot. Everyone in Grade 5 would like to thank Ms. Eda for organizing a night like this for us.

Grade 1 Celebrates Costume Day with a Flare! In March, Grade 1 celebrated costume day in conjunction with the literature book, Peter’s Dream. Students were able to attend school wearing any costume of their choice while sharing with their classmates. It was a special day filled with spectacularly fun costumes and wonderful smiles.

Editor-in-Chief Check out the Focus blog to see an amazing and original comic created by some very talented students in Grade 7.
