STUDENTS MAKE A BIG SPLASH FOR CHILDREN’S DAY Grade 3 get their everlast- by Amna Mohammed (6A) ing gobstoppers ready for Children’s day was held on Thursday, May 9th. The movie night By Zaidhan Athif (3A)

Mr. Matthew and Ms. Fazla arranged a marvelous movie night for Grade 3. We watched Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. We enjoyed the musical numbers in the movie. The OompaLoompas acted really funny. The parents thought Mr. Wonka was crazy, but I think he is a remarkable inventor. In the movie, Charlie Bucket is a well-mannered boy, unlike the other children who acted horribly. It was good to see manners and politeness prevail in the end, and for Charlie’s dreams to come true.

theme for the primary students was sea creatures. Many wonderful costumes were worn, and the students were met with applause from the teachers as they walked down the red carpet. Meanwhile, secondary came in normal, colourful clothes, and some of the teachers even wore school uniforms! The amazing day started with an assembly about the rights and responsibilities of kids themselves and the adults (parents). After this, we went up to

play at the stalls. There were a total of seven stalls and they were conducted by some of the senior students. There were many different activities at each stall, including sponge throw, just dance, throwing balls, shooting range, karaoke, game zone & video gaming. We also had the canteen which was used to host a fundraiser event (also conducted by some students).

After that, we all went down to the hall to watch and take part in the talent show where some hilarious comedy shows, videos and amazing songs were performed.

STUDENTS CELEBRATE WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY The students of Billabong showed their admiration for keeping our environment clean by creating posters for World Environment Day. The children were accompanied by friends, teachers and family members who offered support and encouragement. The Event was held at artificial beach. The weather was pleasant and as the students created work presenting the harmful effects of wasting

food, they had the fortune of having a view of the beautiful Maldivian sea. Not only was it a beautiful sight, but also a daunting one, as it is a sight which could be lost if we continue to waste what is precious to us.

Welcome to the student reef This month, Billabong invites you to venture to the deep depths of the ocean and observe some extraordinary creatures in their natural environment. If you thought giant squids were a myth, you might be in for a surprise.

Aaaaah! Everyone, get out of the water! Shark! The lovely mermaid, Numa, displays her creative skills as she recycles an old CD into a dazzling fish.

Yaniu and Yusuf (4B) show off some cool body art.

In an attempt to clean his desk, Mr. Matthew unleashed a shark to eat up all the rubbish. Unfortunately, the shark chose a different meal and bit off Mr. Matthew’s leg. Ouch!

The creatures of the deep brought together lots of rubbish and transformed the junk into beautiful works of art. Thank you, Ms. Aisha, for helping our underwater critters to create such wonderful work.

Watch out for rogue jellyfish lurking around the corridors of the School. They can unleash a nasty sting!

Grade 4 venture into the weird and wonderful world of Roald Dahl For their practical assessment, Grade 4 were assigned the task of recreating their favourite scenes from the book, Matilda, written by Roald Dahl. The many groups worked well together to create a beautiful collection of models representing some classic moments from the book.

Grade 4B celebrated the completion of their models with a class photo to show off their work. Special mention goes to Raaniya, Een, Isha & Aini for creating a huge model displaying three floors of Matilda’s house.

Linda, Aika, Daifa & Layana from 4A worked hard to create a colourful representation of Miss. Honey’s classroom. The devotion to detail was wonderful, especially with the portly character, Bruce Bogtrotter, and also with the pigtails on Amanda Thripp.

Secondary students have a monster mash for horror night

Billabong teachers teach Ghiyasuddin School how to really play football

As part of the extended activity in English Language and Literature, Grade 8 students celebrated the genre of Horror and Suspense with a horrorthemed costume party.

The teachers of Billabong made the School proud as they competed against Ghiyasuddin International School in a friendly football match. The game was tense at times. Despite sailing ahead in the first half, our opponents began to rack up goals quite swiftly towards the end of the match. However, the Billabong staff held their own against their rivals and stopped any more balls going into the net. Billabong walked away victorious with 5 goals to 4, with both Csaba and Odon Sir scoring two goals, and Tom Sir scoring one. A lot of action on our side of the pitch ensured our goalkeeper was constantly on the move and repeatedly blocking strikes from our rivals. Mr. Thaufeeq’s great goalkeeping scores did not go unnoticed as he received the ’man of the match’ award.

The students dressed up as their favourite horror character. There were prizes for the best creative horror costume. Zaain Ahmed Hamad from grade 8A, won the prize for best creative costume - a murder victim!

A fond farewell to two truly outstanding individuals. In the last month, Billabong High has said goodbye to two teachers, Ms. Surangi and Ms. Reena. Ms. Surangi is a charming, funny and kind individual. If you ask any teacher if they could think of a time when she was not smiling, they will not be able to give you an answer. We wish Surangi well as she returns to her beautiful home country of Sri Lanka. Ms. Reena is an amazing teacher because she is the type of person who really wants students to succeed and to challenge themselves. She is an incredibly confident and strong-minded person and I will miss her bossing me about as we put the newsletter together. From everyone at Billabong High, we wish you two all the best.
