[URBAN THRESHOLD_A PLACE TO RECONNECT ] The project is conceived as a complex of spaces embracing the intersection of various systems, demographics, programs, and activities. Programs and activities are exposed to weave intricate network of public spaces that every journey between levels becomes a spectacle on its own. The open outdoor public space is integrated into the main body of structure and served as platforms for users to perceive the atmosphere of arts and culture.

In order to avoid the mistakes in planning that “city blocks serve no purpose other than as space to pass is the eponymous character of urban corridor.” The building will be a threshold as well as monument to connect and reactivate the adjacent neighborhood.

Site Context Plan Since the late 1890s, Eglington Street West have become the home for immigrants coming from Jamaica and other South American countries. This resulted in a booming Jamaican cultural atmosphere in the area.

However, gentrification began inthe late 2000s when plans for a new light rail system was anounced. This decision resulted the displacement of many of the neighbourhood’s original residents, and slowly removes the cultural atmosphere in the area...

Since 2005, housing and rental costs in the area started rising

The bottom side of the cantilever is painted with the selection of color that is most used in the well known murals in the area. At night, lights would be turned on and the colors would be reflected onto the ground, creating a spectacle of its own.

As a tribute to the wall painting culture in Little Jamaica, the Street Facing Facade is etched with a collage demonstrating some of the most significant moments in history that happened in Eglinton St. West Little Jamaica. After all, the purpose of this community art center is to provide a space to reconnect the artists and residents in the area

[URBAN TOD SOCIAL HUB @ CITY CENTER: CITY WITHIN CITY ] The Xizhimen Super Complex is a multifunctional, multi-system urban supercenter that aims to solve a series of problems on the existing site. By creating interation between the different systems, the space becomes a social hub where people heading for different destinations cross paths, and serves as a place that reconnects the surounding neighbourhood.

The Xizhimen Super Complex acts as a “third place” that redefines the urban commuting space, creating an informal social space that is distinct from home (first place) and work (second place), where people can gather, socialize, and build community.

Existing Public Space Issues On-Site 1. Low-vitality space as a result of the large quantity of overpass bridges in the area 2. Excessive distance and inconvenient path in the transfer space 3. Lack of public space, with bicycle and cars parked in pedetrial zones 4. Access points of subway are bordered by fences, resulting long walking distances.

Xizhimen is a public transport junction that contains interchange between 3 Subway lines, a high speed rail terminal, as well as a bus terminal. Even though it is one of the most populated transportation hubs in Beijing, the current planning of the site creates inconvenience for those that uses the space.

History of the Xizhimen Transport Hub & Those that Uses the Space 1999

2018

Due to the heavy traffic congestion, the original Xizhimen overpass was torn down in 1999. The new design finished construction on the same year.

1906 The original Xizhimen Railway Station was built in August 1906. It is a railway station on the original Jiangzhang main line and Jinmen Branch line.

1984 In 1984, the metro station at Xizhimen opens for service, being part of Metro Line 2

CapitaMall XIzhimen finishes construction and opens to the public. The mall is also connected to three office towers and an underground parking.

2009 The Beijing Metro Line 4 opened at Xizhimen Station in September 2009

1988 In 1988, the Xizhimen Railway Station changes its name to Beijing North Railway Station

2000 The Bus station at Xizhimen undertakes upgrades and becomes the Xizhimen Bus Terminal

2016 The Beijing North Railway Station closes to the public for upgrades in 2016. Construction began on the same year.

2022 The Xizhimen Site today is also known as the Xizhimen transportation hub. The current site contains functions such as a shopping mall, office towers, railway station, metro station, as well as a bus terminal

A Super Complex is a multifunctional space that consists of multiple systems that fulfills the needs of multiple user groups. A Super complex make possible for activities such as working, shopping, visiting, transfering, and relaxing to happen in a single architectural volumn.

By reshaping the original commuting space and commercial space, all functional spaces are now connected, creating a small urban hub within a larger urban context. [SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPEMENT ON A RURAL SITE] This project consists of a series of net-zero-energy dwelling units being situated in the mountains of Anshun, Guizhou. Together, these dwellings forms a resort on the Hillside to invite guests to stay in. The goal of “Net Zero Energy Resort Anshun” is to not only provide visitors with the best scenery and experience of the site, but also to keep building energy consumption to the minimum to reduce operating cost of the resort by applying both passive and active design strategies, as well as modular construction.The project is aimed to improve local exonomy through bringing commercial activities and to promote a self-sufficeint lifestyle.

Most areas have warm winters and cool summers, with distinct dry and wet seasons. There are thunderstorms and fog all year round. The annual temperature range is small, the daily temperature range is large, there is less sunshine, and solar radiation is strong. In some areas, the temperature in winter is low.

The Project is located in the Guizhou, which is a province located in Southern China. Guizhou borders the autonomous region of Guangxi to the south, Yunnan to the west, Sichuan to the northwest, the municipality of Chongqing to the north, and Hunan to the east.

Hot Summer, Warm Winter

Diaojiaolou refers to a huse with “Hanging Feet”. They were traditional dwellings built and used by the Miao, Dong, Zhuang, Yao, Tujia, Bouyei, and Shui Ethnic Minorities at the mountain forests of South China.

Building form inspired by the classic “L”layout of the traditional diaojiaolou typology, with bedroom on one end & living room on the other.

The large volumn is broken up into smaller units, seperating the different functions. the “glass box” in-between the volumns invites natural light into the interior.

The resort contains three different types of units for guests to choose from. Unit 1 includes two independent guest rooms and a suite, as well as a common dining area. The two sides of unit type 2 are independent loft units, a public bar and can be located in the middle of the building.

Type 3 consists of 4 separate bedroom units and a shared living room. Each unit includes an open outdoor terrace. The platform contains a small swimming pool as well as viewing and resting areas.

[REVIVAL + RE-HABITATION OF A HISTORICAL SITE] The concept of the masterplan is conceived based on the history of Segezia during the Fascism 1938 agrarian reform. As part of the plan of the Tavoliere, it was designed for rehabilitation of the rural context, however it was never completed and still in the state of abandonment.

Segezia was assigned with functional relevance of administrative, old bell tower; empty square and place for worship remained as the long forgotten landmarks on site, highly resembling the metaphysical painting by Giorgio de Chirico. By digging into the story written on the past letters, Segezia reveals its hidden melancholy past associated with trauma from WWII, intensive labor and death caused by malaria. As one of the abandoned place that was proposed for clear purpose without any natural transformation of place itself, Segezia remained as a “dream-like” states without time and life which composes the space, the idea of the master plan is to awakening the soul of Segezia by creating a new tattoo on the past scar, by proposing a ribbon-like connective skybridge follows the original greek cross and going up and down on site and connecting major public nodes, the goal is to activate the vacant space and creating a lively community which intertwined with its past.

Site Context Plan Refugee Migration

The Site is located at Borgo Segezia, a small town near the city of Foggia in Northern Puglia

Over the last decade, there has been an increase in the number of refugee moving in to Italy and nearby countries. From countries such as Tubusia, Morroco, Egypt, and sub-Saharan Africa, refugees arrived in Italy have been housed in a mix of temporary housing and camps.

1938 Italy experiences an Agarian Fascism Reform movement in 1938, and the Borgo Segezia area is selected to be designed as part of the rural expansion plan. The original masterplan of the site is designed by Concezio Petrucci, and the target occupants of the site are family member of those that have military background.

Most of the construction of public buildings in the area surounding the central plaza completed in around 1941. Borgo Segezia experienced its most flourished moment at the time.

Borgo Segezia today became a small run-down town with very few residents in the area due to its lack of communal facilities.

Pre-1937 Before 1937, the Borgo Segezia Site is covered with large areas of farm land with scattering farm houses.

The site is located approximately 12 km from Foggia, the largest town in the area at the time.

The goal of this project is to help new refugees find more permanent housing, as well as creating a sustainable community by expanding beyond the existing site.

“Squares & Streets without Town”

The Borgo Segezia project was abandoned along with the fall of the Fascist Rigime. The large areas of residential zone that were originally propose ended up never being constructed.

Architectural Style Inspiration The administrative building, old bell tower, empty square and place for worship remained as the long forgotten landmarks on site, highly resembling the metaphysical painting by Giorgio de Chirico. the architecture style of the newly proposed masterplan takes reference of the design elements shown in the paintings.

As an extension of the school on-site, the new addition will be connected to the existing building and stretch outwards, providing more classroom and public gathering space to the community.

A market is proposed near the central plaza of the masterplan, and this is a place where residents could purchase their daily necessities. Community functions such as a greenhouse and a kitchen is also proposed in the zone for people to grow and cook food. It also acts as a small social hub.

Residential Shophouse Exterior Perspective The addition of residential buildings are a crutial part in the overall masterplan, since this is what the existing condition is missing.

In this zone, residential buildings are combined with commercial function and tranformed into shophouses. In addition to this pavilions are established within the residential zone to promote social interaction.

The leisure zone comprises of a concentration of sports field in the North-Eastern portion of the site, as well as a a series of pavilions at the central plaza. The design of these pavilions are inspired by the surrounding architecture, with goals of promoting social gathering.

The pavillion acts as a connector between the ribbons, the intent is to emphasize the original site facade as well as provide shade for the central plaza.

2 Shading + Retail Space The facade of this pavillion continues to follow the important elements of the original historical site elevation.

3 The Sculpted Garden + Gathering Space The pavillion tends to emphasize and introduce a strong sense of presence of the existing building facade to visitors when they first arrive at the site.
