President’s Message

Dear BILD members,

I am pleased to welcome you to the 44th edition of the BILD Awards. There is tremendous excitement and anticipation in the air tonight as we celebrate the people and projects that define our industry.

Among the many prestigious honours we will present is the Lifetime Achievement Award, which recognizes members who have demonstrated significant leadership in the association and the industry, as well as a commitment to the greater good. I am delighted that we will be honouring the contributions and career of Alan Menkes, President of High-Rise Residential Division for Menkes Developments.

This year, we had more than 930 entries in the BILD Awards. These were judged against set criteria by 40 judges from across Canada and the United States. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to this year’s judges, all of whom graciously gave their time and their expertise in marketing, design, décor, architecture, building and development to help us select the finalists and winners in each category.

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

ALAN MENKES President, High-Rise Residential

Alan Menkes joined the company in 1976. Under his leadership, Menkes has completed over 40,000 condominium units and is highly regarded today as one of the most trusted home builders in Toronto.

Menkes has spearheaded a number of high-profile projects, including Harbour Plaza Residences in Toronto’s South Core, Four Seasons Hotel & Private Residences in Yorkville, and the landmark Empress Walk retail-entertainment-residential complex in North York City Centre.

Currently, he is overseeing the development of 15,000 condominium units across Toronto, including Sugar Wharf, an 11.5-acre vibrant community on Toronto’s Waterfront, which will include five condominium towers, and Festival in Vaughan, which will encompass 20 condominium towers across 75 acres in Vaughan Metropolitan Centre (VMC), one of Canada’s largest new master-planned communities.

Menkes was named 2003 Entrepreneur of the Year in Ontario by Ernst & Young. He serves on the Board of the University Health Network Foundation and is a member of the World Presidents’ Organization (WPO).
