Welcome…

State of the Industry

It’s been another busy time since the last issue of The Installer, so we have a bumper crop of features to update you on a wide range of topics. Now that the dust has settled on the hugely successful BiKBBI Awards which took place earlier this year, we catch up with some of the big winners on the night. Our Installer of the Year, Chris Richards, tells us what it meant to receive one of the profession’s biggest honours. We also profile the winner of the Installation Business of The Year, Kent-based design studio Terlecki, and find out what has driven their growth and enabled them to build a strong reputation for quality and creativity. Elsewhere in this issue, there’s an update from the Unified Water Label, who recently brought together some of the leading bathroom manufacturers for a joint message on why industry collaboration is key to managing water sustainability.

And boiling water tap manufacturer Quooker highlights the need for the industry to avoid complacency when it comes to addressing the lack of skilled professionals in the installation sector, sharing its own experiences of how relationship-building has helped it to play a part in addressing the skills gap.

Plus there’s a round-up of some of the best new product launches at Europe’s biggest bathroom exhibition, ISH 2023, which recently took place in Frankfurt, Germany.

All that and much more is in this edition of The Installer.

And just like that, we are in to Spring and this years’ second issue of The Installer. It has certainly been a busy start to 2023 with lots to think about and plan for, to ensure that we keep our members and the rest of the industry well informed about the key topics impacting our sector, whilst working with all of our stakeholders to find solutions to the challenges and maximise the opportunities.

Earlier this year, we began analysing the outputs from our annual ‘State of the Industry’ installer survey – the results of which you can read more about in this issue. This type of work is critical to help us understand what is important to the KBB installation sector and enables us to focus our efforts in the areas that matter most – so thank you to all those that contributed.

We’ve also been actively tackling other key events such as the recent Spring Budget (if you haven’t seen our recent blog on how the Chancellor’s latest endeavours to steady the ship might affect installers, check it out on page 10) and responding to government’s plans to relax visa requirements to encourage foreign tradespeople back to help with the skills gap.

The team at The Installer have done a fantastic job once again with this issue – it’s packed with great content and features, providing you with ideas, innovation, inspiration and information – enjoy!

BiKBBI UPDATE

BIKBBI survey reveals consumer interest in sustainability but highlights installer concerns over economy and skills gap

A recent survey commissioned and published by the British Institute of Kitchen, Bedroom and Bathroom Installation has revealed growing consumer interest in sustainability and sustainable supply chains for home improvement work. However, the outlook is tempered by increased concerns over rising operating costs, combined with slow economic growth, confusion about apprenticeships, and a lack of government support for KBB business owners.

The research project, which targeted KBB installation businesses and installers and took place across December 2022 and January 2023, consisted of 10 questions covering key topics including the economy, the skills gap and sustainability, and revealed an increase in consumer interest in sustainable products and services when making home improvement decisions, with 30% of respondents noting an increase in enquiries.

However, KBB installation businesses are worried about the future with more than 60% of respondents concerned about the future of their business. Businesses operating in the KBB installation sector feel unsupported by government with an overwhelming 80% agreeing that the powers that be are not doing enough to support small businesses like theirs.

Commenting on the results, Damian Walters, Chief Executive of BiKBBI, said: “The scale of concern in the KBB installation sector on the subject of the economy is not surprising, I think it would be remiss of any business to not have some level of concern, considering the challenges we have faced and those that are yet to come.

“What is surprising is the volume of our existing workforce that would be prepared to leave the industry. Ordinarily, this would be concerning, but whilst we are in the midst of a deep-seated skills gap crisis, this would be catastrophic for the home improvement sector and demonstrates why it is crucial that businesses dependent on an installation function support the work of the BiKBBI in order to drive positive change and build a sustainable future workforce.”

BiKBBI welcomes Triton Showers as latest corporate sponsor

BiKBBI welcomes Triton Showers as latest corporate sponsor

The British Institute of Kitchen, Bedroom and Bathroom Installation is delighted to announce Triton Showers as its first new corporate sponsor of 2023, as the British shower manufacturer pledges its support to the government sanctioned organisation and its work on building a sustainable workforce and improving education, standards and compliance in the KBB installation sector.

Triton Showers was founded in 1975 and has been at the forefront of providing customers with energy efficient showering solutions ever since. As a proud British manufacturer, the business became a member of the ‘Made in Britain’ scheme in 2014 and remains passionate and dedicated about delivering style,

functionality and value to its customers.

In 2021, Triton Showers achieved the Carbon Trust Standard for Carbon, followed by being accredited with Carbon Neutral status in 2022, underlining its commitment to reduce carbon emissions year on year, as part of its ambition to achieve carbon net zero alignment by 2027.

Ashley Cooper, Marketing Director at Triton Showers (pictured left), said: “We are excited to partner with BiKBBI and join a network of manufacturers, retailers and installers committed to working together to deliver positive change in the industry.

“As one of Britain’s leading shower manufacturers, we pride ourselves in offering stylish, yet affordable bathroom solutions designed with ease of installation and unrivalled reliability in mind. With more than 45 years’ experience in the industry – and unparalleled expertise and know-how to match – we look forward to working closely with BiKBBI to help create a sustainable industry and workforce, while improving education and standards across the sector as a whole.”

BiKBBI CEO, Damian Walters, added: “2023 is already proving to be a challenging year for the sector and the wider economy and, therefore, it has never been more crucial that the industry unite and work together for the benefit of all areas of KBB.

“Triton is joining a growing community of sponsors and partners who recognise the importance of collaboration and are demonstrating their commitment to helping BiKBBI drive positive change in the installation sector and the wider industry. Triton Showers is a well-known and trusted brand, with vast knowledge and experience in their field, and we are delighted to welcome them as a corporate sponsor and look forward to working with them.”

Triton recognised for driving behaviour change

Triton Showers scooped the Bathroom Manufacturers Association ‘special recognition in driving behaviour change award, in acknowledgement of its ‘Every Drop Makes a Difference’ campaign.

The award reflects Nuneaton-based Triton’s continued commitment to creating meaningful change, as the business sets its sights on assisting consumers in reducing their impact on the environment while saving them water, energy, and money.

This achievement, announced late last year, followed the shower manufacturer’s success in the BMA Sustainability Awards 2021, where it was named winner of the Workplace Initiative category for its efforts to engage employees in its sustainability journey.

David Tutton, managing director at Triton, said: “Triton is very much on a sustainability journey. In 2021 we proudly achieved the Carbon Trust Standard, and we went one step further by gaining Carbon Neutral certification this year.

“We’re therefore overjoyed to have walked away with the special recognition in driving behaviour change award in the BMA Sustainability Awards 2022 – showcasing our investment in communicating how a change in showering habits can

reduce consumers’ environmental impact.”

Triton’s ‘Every Drop Makes a Difference’ campaign delivered large scale advertising, including national TV and radio. As part of the project, Triton launched its online water and energy calculator, which provides personalised tips and suggestions to help consumers improve the sustainability profile of their showering habits, while also helping them to reduce their water and energy bills.

Tutton added: “Sustainability is a core component of our business, and our ‘Every Drop Makes a Difference’ campaign has played an instrumental role in encouraging customers to join us on our mission to reduce carbon usage.”

TALKING POINT: Construction vacancies sit at record high of 45k says Harradence

February 2023 has remained broadly static, with slight decreases and increases month on month. Material price inflation, which reached a record high of 25.5% in July 2022, currently sits at circa +15.5%, and this, couple with the ongoing increases in energy prices, continues to have a dampening effect on activity within the sector. Despite the lack of growth in recent months, the level of construction vacancies continues to sit a record high of 45,000 compared to an historic average of circa 23,000.

One of the keynote speakers at the recent 2023 BiKBBI Annual Conference – held in February in front of an audience of more than 150 business leaders from across the KBB installation, retail and manufacture sectors – was Fergus Harradence, Deputy Director of the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy. He addressed the delegation to share insight from the government in terms of the current situation for UK construction and the outlook for 2023 and beyond.

Following a short but significant dip in March 2020, because of Covid 19, the UK construction industry continued to perform strongly from April 2020, with the sector taking just 11 months to recover the lost output from the initial impact caused by the pandemic. This was largely because of the industry’s ability to adapt rapidly and effectively in order to continue to serve the country’s needs.

He reported that construction activity from November 2022 to

Harradence outlined the government’s predictions for 202324, forecasting it will be the most challenging time for the UK construction sector since the global economic crisis of 2008. The government predicts that construction will contract by 1.7% in 2023, but this is from a record high for the sector. However, the Construction Products Association (CPA) forecasts a decline of 4.7% in 2023 (which would have a much bigger impact on the industry), with a slow recovery in 2024.

The CPA predicts that the contraction of activity in 2023 for the UK construction sector will most likely fall on domestic RMI (-9%), commercial new build and the new house building sector (-11%), driven by wider concerns on inflation and the cost of living, demonstrated by the GfK Consumer Confidence Index falling to 45% in January 2023 – a record low.

Harradence told delegates that industry-wide cooperation would be needed to effectively address the skills gap that the sector is facing. He explained that the government’s policy direction is for “performance improvement through collaboration, investment, skills and decarbonisation.”

What does the recent Budget mean for installers?

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt’s recent 2023 Spring Budget seemed to cover employment, energy, education, enterprise and much more in what he billed as a ‘budget for growth’. But what do the latest measures mean for KBB installation businesses and installers?

tax on profits above this level. The full 25% rate will apply for companies with an annual profit of £250,000 or more. Profits of non-incorporated businesses (sole traders, partnerships) are taxed via Self-Assessment and will not be affected.

Pensions: Lifetime Allowance abolished and maximum contribution levels increased

Michelle

offers a round-up of the key points that will impact your business over the coming months…

The UK will avoid recession and inflation to fall to 2.9% by end of 2023

The chancellor announced that the economy will avoid a ‘technical recession’ (GDP falling by two consecutive quarters) and the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) forecasts inflation will drop to 2.9% by the end of 2023. This is good news for everyone but for installers it could signal a continued decline in the extortionate rise in operating costs, particularly materials. It also means the consumer confidence will begin to return, potentially stimulating both the property market and domestic RMI activity.

Fuel duty freeze until March 2024

A 12-month freeze on fuel duty from April 2023 will go some way to providing some much-needed relief for installation businesses reliant on their vehicles to operate. Whilst the predicted saving to drivers of around £100 may not seem like much, the decision to freeze the duty, rather than introduce the government’s planned 11p duty rise, is significant. According to the RAC, analysts expect the price of diesel, especially, to fall further in the coming months but continued rises in the long term with a number of factors in play including the cost of crude oil, delivery costs and, most contentious, retailer margin.

Full capital expensing for businesses

From April 2023 until end of March 2026, companies can claim 100% capital allowances on qualifying plant and machinery investments. Full expensing allows you to write off the cost of investment in one go – under full expensing, for every pound you invest, your taxes are cut by up to 25p. For installation businesses, it applies to spending on equipment including, but not limited to, tools, machines such as computers and printers, vehicles (vans and lorries) and office equipment such as chairs and desks.

Planned corporation tax rise to go ahead

A rise of corporation tax from 19% to 25% set out by Rishi Sunak when he was chancellor will go ahead which will help to repair damage to public finances caused by the pandemic and made worse by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Now, this may seem a bit steep but will impact big businesses far more than SMEs and micro SMEs as the current 19% rate will still apply if your profits are £50,000 or less. However, you will pay more

If you are nearing retirement or have had the foresight to plan well for your retirement, this is particularly good news for you. Previously, pension benefits held by you that were valued in excess of the lifetime allowance, would have faced an additional tax charge of up to 55% on that excess. The current lifetime allowance stands at £1,073,100 and this means the tax charge will now no longer apply from 6 April 2023.

The next point is not necessarily just for those thinking about retirement but should be a consideration for all. In terms of maximum contributions, the Annual Allowance is the amount that you, with sufficient earnings, can contribute to your pension each year without facing tax charges. This has been increased by 50%, from £40,000 to £60,000. There are restrictions to this limit for some so it’s worth checking out.

Energy support continues for consumers

Whilst it would be easy to be downbeat about the lack of further support from the government for businesses around energy costs, this will be likely to affect installation businesses less than other areas of the sector due to the fact that most do not have business premises as such. We will, however, all continue to benefit from the extended support on our household energy bills. Equally, consumer sentiment and disposable income will rise as a direct result of this support, both of which continue to impact decision making when it comes to investing in home improvements.

Childcare support and ‘returnerships’ to boost the labour market

As a sector that has continued to outperform during the most testing times in the last three years, the impending skills gap crisis has expediated and therefore any intervention by government to bring new, skilled labour in to our industry will always be welcome. The increased support around childcare for working parents could have a positive impact on many of our members who struggle to balance the cost of working versus the cost of childcare. Under the expanded scheme, working parents in England will be able to claim 30 hours free childcare for one and two-year olds, to be rolled out in stages from April 2024.

Another welcome measure is a £63m investment in programmes to encourage retirees over 50 back to work, billed as ‘returnerships’ and skills boot camps. Now, there is definitely more information needed on how this will work before we get too excited but, in principle this could be a great way to bring much needed skilled, experienced labour back in to our sector.

Making the hard work PAY OFF

After collecting the coveted Installer of the Year honour at this year’s BiKBBI Awards, Chris Richards spoke to The Installer about his story so far, and his plans for building on this success

What does winning Installer of the Year mean for you?

Winning Installer of the Year is a fantastic achievement and has become a highlight and a very proud time in my life not just because it is a great title to have but my 6-year-old son told me how proud he is of me and is now always trying to do his best at everything he participates in. I believe it has taught him to work hard and aim big. It proves that putting in the effort and hard work really does pay off. This award provides us with recognition and hopefully, going forward, it will help to grow and scale my business to a very high level.

What initially got you into K&B installation?

I was an apprentice quite late at 24 years old. I started my apprenticeship with a company that carried out all aspects of plumbing and finished my apprenticeship with a heating company. This is how I managed to gain knowledge of both bathrooms and heating systems.

I’ve always been businessminded, so I finished my apprenticeship and became selfemployed immediately in 2017.

I was approached by B&Q, Bathstore and Victoria Plum to install their bathrooms and, as a requirement, I registered with BIKBBI. Being registered with BIKBBI is a great way of showing consumers that we’re a reputable company and is great for our company image.

bikbbi.org.uk 12 Installer of the Year
Chris Richards, 2023 Installer of the Year (left) with Awards host Paul Sinha

So who else is in the team at Plumbing Hot, and what are the company’s particular specialisms?

We are a family-run business consisting of myself, Stephen Friend, my father-in-law, and my wife Shannon Richards. We also have Josh Insley, our apprentice. The company’s specialisms are bathroom installations and boiler and central heating installations. We also carry out all other aspects of plumbing.

You’re South Wales-based, do you only work locally?

We are a South Wales-based company but we do cover wherever we’re needed. For example, we primarily cover all of South Wales and surrounding areas but if a customer out of area did want an installation I would adapt the quotation to cover travel and hotel costs to be able to carry out that install.

What have been your biggest challenges or lessons learned in business so far?

Early day challenges were trying to compete with the more established companies. Once, I got laughed at because I said I could install someone’s bathroom the following week. The biggest challenge I’m currently experiencing is employing the right people. I have a reputable business where customers are expecting the best, especially after winning this award. I’m looking for somebody who is willing to take pride in their work and want to take us to the next level and scale up.

How long have you been a BiKBBI member and what do you feel membership adds to your business?

I have been a member of BIKBBI since August 2018. I feel it adds real value to the business by creating a good company image when consumers are looking for a reputable business that they can

trust to provide them with their dream bathroom.

What would you say are the most important rules for growing a business?

The most important rules for growing your business are:

• Create a business plan –know where you want to be in five years;

• Understand business finances;

• Set goals and targets;

• Carry out work to a high standard;

• Employ the right people;

• Continually add more value to your business.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out in installation? My advice to someone just starting in installation is to work hard on building a relationship with your customers. Plan and do the job to the best of your ability, take pictures before, during and after, and communicate with customers at each stage of the install.

Outside of work, what else is particularly important in your life?

Spending time with my wife and two children is most important

to me. I do work long hours and think about business constantly so I try to make the most of every bit of time I get time with the family. We enjoy going to the local beach, and watching planes at the airport.

My hobbies are watching sport, especially football, darts and snooker, I play snooker and pool to a high and competitive level.

What are your plans and hopes for the future, both personally and professionally?

My business plans for the future are to scale the business and eventually sell for a profit. Personal plan – other than winning the lottery! – is to have a fair amount of money to set my two children up in life as times are so hard at the moment. I would like to get them onto the property ladder at the very least. I would also to like to set up another business buying into property, developing and selling. Opening a snooker and pool club was always an ambition whilst growing up too, so maybe I would like to do something like that as a second business one day.

The Business of Transformation

Kent-based design studio Terlecki triumphed at the BiKBBI awards earlier this year, scooping the coveted Installation Business of the Year title. We caught up with Director Carl Terlecki about the company’s story so far, and the satisfaction gained from helping to transform houses into homes

Huge congratulations on your win Carl. What was awards night like for you, and what does winning Installation Business of the Year mean for Terlecki?

The awards night was a fantastic event. It is amazing to see how it has grown in just one year. The team at BiKBBi are doing the industry proud and I believe the event is a great showcase for the KBB industry, especially for the guys at the coal face, delivering projects week in and week out.

For Terlecki, winning Installation Business of the Year means we are on the right track. We are putting a lot of effort into innovating and changing what people think of an installer and how their project is run. This award encourages us to keep at it even in the face of challenges.

Who else is in the team at Terlecki?

Yes, we certainly are a team. We have a combination of part-time and full-time employees, labouronly sub-contractors and bona fide sub-contractors. We work with each other week-in weekout with one goal of delivering quality projects.

My wife Taryn and I are directors, our operations team includes Kim, Julia, Aurora, Glenn and Sinta. Our delivery team includes Inus, Wayne, Pete, Michael, Brandon, Otto, Richard and team, Dave H, Josh and team, Dave J, Archie and team, Lewis, Nick, Paul, Tibs, Ash and team.

bikbbi.org.uk 14

You clearly tackle a wide range of projects, but what would you say are the company’s particular specialisms? We are still a young company and as such we are on an adventure. We have focused on installations as I believe this is where things fall flat. You can design a great space but without a team to deliver the project it can all turn to a mess. Terlecki started with the aim of becoming the ‘go-to’ place for making home improvements a reality and this is the journey we are on. We are passionate about transformation and turning houses into homes. We will provide a full turn-key service by discovering customers dreams, designing concepts and solutions and developing and delivering quality projects for every space we are given.

Is all your work local to the Kent area or do you cover the wider region?

Yes, we keep things local and enjoy supporting local. We have worked with independents that are outside our area but have customers closer to us that need help. There have also been occasions where we get a referral and therefore are always happy to assist where we can. We are strong believers in keeping our team to a normal work week to be with family, so travelling too far takes away from this important value.

Are you solely independent or do you undertake contract work?

Yes, we have contracts. I joined the industry as a sole trader and got a contract with a high street retailer. When we started the

limited company, we took on other contracts with retailers and independents.

Even with us starting our own design studio, we see value in offering our services to like-minded retailers who do not have their own installation teams and don’t feel threatened by us. It’s one thing having an installer on your books but completely different having a high performance installation team on your books that can handle everything from plans to completion with one point of contact. We can handle all aspects of home renovation and, as such, like to think of ourselves as a designer’s dream team.

What have been some of your biggest challenges or lessons learned in business so far?

There are many challenges but to list a few… we have had to grow a business through the unexpected – Covid, price increases and material shortages – and also face the myriad of HMRC compliance that, for a growing business in the construction industry, is overwhelming. We still deal with customers perceptions and expectations and poor knowledge, as well as designers who don’t know how much it costs to deliver a quality project and therefore do not always handle customer budgets correctly. There are also sometimes sub-contractors who forget that working as a team and concentrating on what you are good at is always better.

Some key lessons I have learned are: listen to your customers and ask for feedback; stick it out even when things don’t go according to plan; you can’t solve everything but you can play your part; people are worth it and everyone deserves a chance,; family is still the most important; know when to say no and know what you are worth; and businesses deserve to make a profit so they can invest in the future.

bikbbi.org.uk 15 Installation Business Of The Year
Carl and Taryn Terlecki

You’ve been trading since 2017 – how have your clients’ needs and expectations evolved during that time?

There are customers that think they know how to do a home renovation because they watched a TV show, have some DIY friends or they have a few tools. There is little knowledge around compliance, HSE, building regulations, insurance, skills, realistic budgets etc. It’s always sad chatting with customers that have done 4 or 5 renovations before and have been burnt but now know through experience that it’s better to get a specialist team. I think customers are becoming more savvy. Needs and expectations are shifting for the project to be handled from start to finish, with clear objectives and expectations. The industry is not necessarily set up for this but there are young business owners who want to change the stigma in the industry and provide a quality service. This is where institutions like BiKBBI, KBSA and FMB are so important. They are raising the bar and we want to be part of this.

How long have you been a BiKBBI member and what do you feel membership adds to your business?

We have been members since we started. We feel proud to be

part of something that wants to see standards raised, who believe in training and value teamwork. The team at BiKBBI have always been supportive and are always pushing for change. The KBB industry needs to see the value that installation teams bring and BiKBBi is our voice. The more installers that get on board, the more that BiKBBi can do. It’s been great to hear their story and its fantastic that our story is now part of theirs.

You share BiKBBI’s passion for apprenticeships – please tell us about your involvement with encouraging new talent to enter the profession.

I have always had a passion for training and coaching. You can only learn so much in the classroom. I have had many trainers, coaches and mentors and I hope I can pass on something as well.

Apprenticeships are such a great way to get the skills, experience and wisdom to enter the market and start a career. When I heard about the

bikbbi.org.uk 16 Installation Business Of The Year
“The more installers that get on board, the more that BiKBBi can do. It’s been great to hear their story and its fantastic that our story is now part of theirs”

opportunity to be a part of pioneering a Fitted Interiors Installation apprenticeship I jumped right in. The standard is now set and we are seeing new talent entering the KBB industry. We have an apprentice on our team; he was a finalist at the awards and we look forward to him completing later this year. He will hopefully be the first of many for us and we trust other businesses will give the same opportunities.

What would you say are the most important rules for growing a business?

Wow, not sure I am fully qualified for this question but I am learning some rules that I will take with me and which I think are always worth keeping in mind: aim small miss small; you can’t do everything; team team team; know what you good at; trust the process; be lawful and principled; know your margins; and have a framework.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out in installation?

Find a company – not just an installer – that can give you the support you will need; join the BiKBBi; remove as many kitchens as you can; don’t rush your work; invest in good tools; ask questions; keep practicing; and don’t give up – it is a very rewarding career.

What are the plans and hopes for the future of the business?

We have a few business developments on the go besides consolidating Terlecki and its growth. We want a Terlecki installation to mean something, whether it is a kitchen, bedroom or bathroom.

We are developing a design studio in West Malling. Our plan is that this studio will be a place to be inspired and collaborate on home improvement projects. It will be a space where people can get a service from concept to completion without having

to deal with a heavy sales environment. Quality service with quality design, quality products and quality project delivery. We want to be known as a reputable design and build company in our area that is turning houses into homes. We are also looking at scaling our installation model to provide a solution in the KBB industry. We have put this on the back burner while we work on the above but I believe this could answer a lot of questions and solve some big challenges. Like everything, it needs the right team and investment. Please get in touch if you would like to discuss this opportunity with me. www.terlecki.co.uk

Bette has introduced a new system for shower tray installation which it says will make it significantly easier and faster, and works with shower trays of all sizes. The new approach reworks the process of mounting, levelling, and adjusting the shower tray to the desired height. Until now, this has usually been done using a frame, however, as frames have to be assembled and adjusted in height using screws, it can be a

time-consuming process.

The new BetteLevel selflocking foot system makes the process simpler and faster, with no extra tools required. The patented self-locking, telescopic feet are glued to the shower tray, which is then raised to the desired height and the feet lock in place automatically. If any adjustment is required, the lock can be released by lifting the shower tray, and the process repeated to lock the feet at the

correct height. Once level and at the correct height, the waste can be installed, and the tiling can be done.

The BetteLevel was developed in conjunction with installers, who tested prototypes of the telescopic feet. The shower tray with its self-locking feet can be lifted between 80 and 200 mm to the required floor level, with the self-locking catch in the foot system accurate to half a millimetre and each foot supporting up to 150 kilograms. Most shower trays will only require four corner feet, while particularly large shower trays will also use two or more additional feet which automatically accommodate the gentle incline of the shower tray towards the waste. These additional feet are extended to the correct size once the corner feet have been locked in position. This is done by simply pulling a cord to release a spring lock, with the cord and spring lock being removed through the waste hole.

BetteLevel is suitable for all installation situations, including construction sites, with options including permanently lockable feet to avoid unintentional adjustment.

Heating at height: Why electric heating makes cost and carbon sense for tower blocks

Oliver Baker, CEO of Ambion Heating, examines how low-carbon heating provides a solution to the unique challenge of decarbonising heating for social housing in an affordable and sustainable way.

Britain’s tower blocks were originally designed to provide affordable and safe housing to a large number of residents. Now, they are notorious for high energy bills as most high-rise, multi-occupancy buildings use electric storage heaters that are expensive to run and do not provide adequate temperature control.

This challenge is especially serious in the case of social housing blocks, which make up 48% of high-rise buildings and where residents are more vulnerable to fuel poverty. As a

result, local authorities, housing associations, and installers are considering new ways to help residents to reduce bills, while decarbonising social housing to meet the Government’s net zero targets.

At the heart of the challenge is how to replace often decadesold systems with affordable low-carbon technologies that keep residents out of fuel poverty. Conventional electric heating systems do not address the high cost of energy, while convection systems – including heat pumps – are not as

effective in combating mould and damp issues. In addition, the lack of space for a large system means some technologies are both cost and convenience restrictive.

The smaller property challenge

For many the answer is heat pumps. However, this technology is often unsuitable for smaller homes and multi-occupancy buildings often seen in social housing. With a high upfront cost and a lengthy, complicated and often disruptive installation

bikbbi.org.uk 20 Low Carbon Heating

process, heat pumps require pipework, radiators and external condenser units. They can also be costly to service and maintain.

In addition, convection systems, including heat pumps, do not help combat the mould and damp that tower blocks are prone to. In fact, the warm air they produce, when coming into contact with cold walls, can cause further mould and condensation and harm residents’ wellbeing as well as cause material damage.

With traditional systems failing to ensure the whole home

is adequately and efficiently heated, and options like heat pumps considered unsuitable or impractical for smaller social housing properties, many housing providers are turning to low carbon heat panels as a solution.

Low carbon and low cost

Low carbon heat panels can be installed in a new home or building, or retro-fitted to replace an existing gas or electric heating system using the electrical mains wiring. The technology has a unique control system which uses constant dynamic pulsing – rather than a ‘zoning’ on/off approach used by other systems – to dramatically reduce energy usage and maintain a room’s temperature within 0.1C of its target, 24 hours a day. Discreet infrared heat panels are then used because building materials absorb and store infrared, releasing it between pulses, making it the perfect partner for the pulsing approach.

The results of using dynamic pulsing plus the infrared panels are significant; users can expect to use 63% less electricity when

compared to conventional systems, which also equates to a 63% reduction in carbon emissions.

The system also reduces the unit cost of electricity because it works best across 24-hours. This flat demand profile – there are no morning or evening energy spikes in usage – means that if a homeowner is on a flexi tariff, the system can achieve around a 25% saving in the unit cost of their energy.

Some buildings and residents are already seeing the positive effects of using low carbon heat panels. For example, in an eightstorey social housing block from 1956, which contains 47 dwellings, the switch to our solution is delivering 80% energy and carbon emissions savings.

Meeting the 2050 net zero challenge

Low carbon heat panels can also provide a zero-emission solution for social housing when combined with solar PV and battery storage, until the UK can move to 100% renewable electricity in the future.

To meet the UK’s legally binding target of achieving net zero by 2050, whatever heating solution is chosen needs to be built for the future, and support social housing providers and residents to reduce carbon emissions and the associated impact on the environment.

Tower blocks and social housing may pose unique heating challenges, but with the right technology, they can be futureproofed and converted into the affordable, sustainable and safe social housing they were originally designed to be. www.ambionheating.com

BATHROOMS SET FOR MAKEOVER BOOST

A recent survey by the Bathroom Manufacturers Association found that a quarter of respondents intend to update or replace their bathroom in the next two years…

The BMA, in partnership with Opinium Research, has conducted a biannual poll of 2,000 UK adults to understand customer sentiment and intentions around bathroom refurbishments in the next two years.

The poll, conducted in February 2023, shows an uptick in the % of UK consumers planning a complete bathroom refurbishment in the next two years, back to the same level as June 2021. The figures suggest that more than a quarter of the UK population (26%) wants to complete a full bathroom refurbishment, with partial makeovers and replacing taps slightly up over the same period.

General repair intention is slightly down to 27% from 29% in July 2022. However, this is still the highest intended task, with replacing a shower control and replacing taps also at 27%.

bikbbi.org.uk 22 Bathroom Outlook

While there has been a downward trend away from professional fitters, most Brits would rely on trusted professionals they have used before. For all tasks except a complete bathroom renovation, people would return to a fitter or plumber previously used, varying from 29% for replacing a bath to 35% for replacing taps.

As the cost-of-living bites, the intention to use professionals for bathroom maintenance or refurbishment has dropped, with 53% using a professional for a complete bathroom refurbishment. 40% would use a professional to replace their bathroom taps. Previous BMA research in 2022 highlighted the importance of using professionals within the bathroom and how influential they are in consumers’ decisionmaking processes. After all, a

professional will ensure the right product for the right job is fitted correctly and to regulations, avoiding costly mistakes later.

Regarding a complete bathroom refurbishment, 33% would rely on a recommendation from a friend or family member. Online recommendation sites such as Checkatrade were preferred, whilst local directories and professional bodies seem to have fallen out of widespread use for finding professionals. When thinking about the skills gap and if the public feels confident about finding a professional, nearly half (48%) are sure they would find their required professional in the necessary time.

The BMA says the results of the poll are, overall, encouraging. With 26% of

PLANNING TO DO WITHIN THE NEXT 2 YEARS

the population looking for a complete bathroom refurb, consumers still want to improve their homes and have the available cash, despite inflation.

Tom Reynolds, Chief Executive of the BMA, said:

“Bathroom manufacturers and their partners are operating in a challenging economic environment. Seeing an uptick in homeowners looking at a complete bathroom refurbishment is welcome news. It could be driven by numerous factors, such as adapting to multigenerational living or adopting more energy and water-efficient products.

“As consumers look to save money, we could see an increase in the purchase of innovative products designed to cut energy and water bills. Professional installers are critical for this endeavour –their advice and knowledge ensure customer satisfaction, compliance, and safety.”

Keeping businesses ON THE ROAD

A new study by Fix Radio suggests around one million tradespeople in the UK cannot afford to run their vehicles due to rising costs

The Spring Budget saw the Chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, unveiling plans to maintain the 5p cut in fuel duty for a further 12 months as inflation remains high – saving the average driver £100 next year. Whilst the freeze in fuel duty is a much-needed measure for tradespeople, a study by Fix Radio highlights other obstacles the industry is facing such as plans to increase the ULEZ to greater London and the ‘Transit Tax’.

Concern over the expansion to the ULEZ in London, which is due to be enforced from 29 August, has gathered pace from the construction industry with tradespeople looking to be amongst those worst hit. Research from the Federation of Master Builders has shown that increases to transportation costs, such as rising parking fees over the last 18 months, has forced 80% of tradespeople in the Capital to increase their prices.

The plans to increase ULEZ in Greater London has heightened fears about the impact this will have on tradespeople who face a £12.50 daily fee for vehicles not meeting minimum requirements – this could be equivalent to more than £3,100 a year. Already suffering the results of this, Fix Radio unveiled 23% of tradespeople in Greater London said the introduction of ULEZ and the ‘Transit Tax’ –where taxpayers

bikbbi.org.uk 25 Vehicle Costs

are facing higher rates on vans for private use – has already had a detrimental impact on their business.

To combat increasing costs for tradespeople as a result of the ULEZ expansion, a £110m scrappage scheme will be launched to help fund the purchase of new vehicles that are ULEZ-compliant. Under the new scrappage fund, each applicant is entitled to £2,000 to help transition to a lowpolluting or EV alternative. However, for tradespeople, this allocation covers a mere fraction of what would be required to swap their vehicle.

With the EV equivalent of Britain’s best-selling van, the Ford Transit, starting at £48,000 for its most basic model, the provisions clearly do not go far enough. Even for those who could afford the significant outlay to purchase a new van, a report commissioned by Transport for London estimated that 30,000 non-compliant vans currently use the ULEZ expansion area every day, despite the fact there are only 23,803 vans that meet the new requirements for sale in the UK.

This outlook comes on top of the fact that the cost of steep parking fee rises, and ‘green’ motoring charges forces builders, installers, plumbers and electricians in London to spend £70 on average before they have even walked through the door, and a total of £140 a day including operating costs, according to Fix Radio research. With the average day rate of a tradesperson equalling £150 - according to Pier Consulting, the addition of the new ULEZ charges is now

leaving tradespeople in London facing a loss of 21 workdays. For some tradespeople who have reported on Fix Radio that their daily costs have been as expensive as £300 to work in the Capital, the situation is much bleaker.

Clive Holland, broadcaster on Fix Radio, said: “I have to say from a personal point of view I think through the pandemic our industry was asked to continue to build which we did. Without the construction industry, the UK economy would collapse – you’ve seen a lot of strikes recently but if tradespeople ever decided to strike it would cause significant issues throughout the UK. Tradespeople haven’t had the pat on the back that they deserve for helping through the pandemic and putting themselves in dangerous situations.

“When the ban on red diesel came, the ULEZ extension, the general taxation of vehicles and the electric vans requirement, they are all burdens to tradespeople which seriously affects their income. It is not only happening in London, it is happening in cities around the UK including Birmingham and Bath.

“The tradesperson who is going about their daily job I think is being victimised. Particularly at this time with Brits battling inflation and recession it means that customers are turning down jobs because they can’t afford it and tradespeople are encountering extra fees, such as the ULEZ charge which makes jobs less desirable.”

Stephen Johnson, MD at Quooker UK, explains why installation is the lifeblood of the sector – and how a lack of skilled professionals represents an threat to the future of the industry

PLUGGING the skills gap

Over the last few years, what with Brexit and resultant supply chain issues, Covid-19 with its harsh trading restrictions, and more recently the costof-living crisis, the KBB industry has experienced every form of complexity that could possibly arise. When it comes to planning and futureproofing our businesses, we must take these experiences, learn from them and recognise they are going to present

more challenges for 2023 and beyond.

We must face these challenges in a spirit of cooperation, recognising each other’s issues and working in harmony to try and solve them.

If the last three years have taught us anything, it is that there is no benefit to working in isolation. Manufacturers, dealers and retailers need to work together; teamwork is paramount.

Skills

At Quooker, we have tried to support the wider industry wherever possible, including our campaign with the BIKBBI to tackle the growing skills gap crisis. High consumer demand for installation and after-sales care is increasingly unable to be met with any speed and in many cases, without any guarantee of quality. No matter how many taps we sell, or indeed any kitchens and bathrooms across the industry, if there are not enough installers to keep pace, there is an inevitable bottleneck. As such, it’s an area that requires drastic change and immediate support.

Installation is one of the most important parts of our industry – every manufacturer needs it and it is the lasting taste a customer or company feels about your business. Therefore, for me, there is no question in that we need to place more value on installers and think carefully about how we collectively work together to ensure there is a next

generation of qualified and highly competent individuals to ensure we have a good supply. Put simply, if we do not, business fails.

We have become increasingly conscious that bigger brands have a wider responsibility of care, wherever that support is needed most. This also means investing in key relationships that enable your business to thrive. At Quooker, we rely heavily on our relationships with our dealers and are incredibly thankful to each and every one that has continued to help us get our taps into so many kitchens nationwide.

Our business success or failure is determined by our ability to build and strengthen these relationships, and our whole strategy is based around this dealer-first mentality. We are absolutely committed to them and understand that we need to engage them to develop the business for our mutual benefit. The challenge is that as everyone’s

business is different. Only by understanding each business individually can you deliver a bespoke approach that works for both parties. Manufacturers and suppliers cannot hope to thrive in the sector if those relationships are not rock solid.

All of this is underpinned by having a world-class product of course – everything else is pointless. We have spent the time, through constant research, development and testing, creating market leading innovation and design. We also have a very simple work mantra at Quooker: work harder and do better than yesterday. With the objective to beat the previous day, however challenging it was, you can meet every new obstacle head on with fresh enthusiasm and renewed determination. For businesses looking ahead to an uncertain year, I cannot recommend adopting this mindset enough. quooker.co.uk

ADDRESSING the State of the Industry

A recent survey commissioned and published by the British Institute of Kitchen, Bedroom and Bathroom Installation has revealed growing consumer interest in sustainability and sustainable supply chains for home improvement work. However, this positive outlook sits alongside increased concerns over rising operating costs, combined with slow economic growth, confusion about apprenticeships, and a lack of government support for KBB business owners.

The State of the Industry research, which targeted KBB installation businesses and installers and took place across December 2022 and January 2023, consisted of 10 questions covering key topics including the economy, the skills gap and sustainability, and revealed:

bikbbi.org.uk 36 Bikbbi State Of The Nation Survey

BiKBBI State of the Industry Survey
feel there is more to be done by the KBB industry to improve its environmental impact
ALMOST

More than

of respondents have noticed an increase in customers asking questions about environmentally friendly solutions

When asked about sustainability and whether the industry does enough to reduce its environmental impact, one third of those surveyed think there is more to be done, whilst almost 50% think the industry is doing enough, which shows there is still progress to be made in this area.

Installers continue to have influence with consumers on their purchasing decisions, with 31% of respondents reporting an increase in customers asking for advice when it comes to environmentally-friendly solutions. BiKBBI feels it is a clear sign that the industry needs to engage the installer population further on education around sustainable products and practises as they are in a prime position to promote sustainable decisions.

Turning to the economy, with the industry already severely impacted by the growing skills gap, the BiKBBI survey reinforced that more needs to be done to support the thousands of KBB installation businesses across the UK. The rising costs of running a business amid a financial downturn are of key concern; with bills going up it is particularly worrying for KBB installation businesses to see the economy and consumer spending continuing to fall.

Over 40% felt there was a downturn in incoming business and over 60% of those surveyed were very concerned or concerned about their business this year.

Moreover, 80% of those surveyed said they felt the government needs to give more

support to small businesses, whilst 60% said they were considering moving to a different industry, with 40% citing financial gain as an underlying reason for this.

Despite a growth in apprenticeship opportunities in the UK, the survey highlights that installation business owners are still not accessing this vital tool to help address the UK skills gap. Business owners are concerned about red tape, the expense and the process. BiKBBI pledges to continue to champion apprenticeships and support KBB businesses, but calls on the government to do more to support business owners and empower them to train the next generation with modern apprenticeships.

Walters,

said:

“The outputs from the survey clearly demonstrate the areas of focus for the institute in terms of supporting our members. It is encouraging to see the demand for more education on the topic of sustainability and we will now work with our stakeholders to provide tools to assist installation businesses to promote environmentally motivated products, services and practices to consumers.

“The scale of concern in the KBB installation sector on the subject of the economy is not surprising, I think it would be remiss of any business to not have some level of concern,

considering the challenges we have faced and those that are yet to come.

Water Efficiency

A presentation from the Unified Water Label Association (UWLA) at international bathroom trade show ISH in Frankfurt recently concluded that the industry has the solution to better water and energy efficiency in the home with the Unified Water Label.

Speakers from leading companies and brands that support the Unified Water Label shared their commitment to using and promoting the label in order to help them achieve their sustainability aims. René Marienfeld, Senior Product Design Engineer at IKEA, said: “We have embraced the Unified Water Label as it provides easy to understand information about the technical features of a product and creates awareness of water and energy consumption. The feedback from our staff, partners and consumers has been really positive and we are excited to be part of the scheme.”

Steffan Erath, Head of Innovation & Sustainability at Hansgrohe, talked about brand’s Green Vision beyond Water, and how they see sustainability as an opportunity. Hansgrohe has committed to bringing all

of its products onto the Unified Water by the end of 2024, as part of its eco goals for 2030. Erath said: “Supporting the Unified Water Label provides us with an opportunity to work with the industry and the government to bring about change.”

Collaboration across markets and borders is a vital component of meeting long-term objectives, according to Carla Rodrigues, Executive Director of ANQIP, who explained how Portugal developed its own water label scheme but was one of the first schemes to support the Unified Water Label. She said: “We cannot wait any longer to take steps to combat the impacts of climate change. Aligning our schemes is a logical and easy step.

“We are currently in transition but working towards having one certification and one label for Portugal markets that align with government initiatives and regulation by 2024.”

UWLA CEO Yvonne Orgill said: “We are grateful to our partners and supporters for joining us at ISH to raise the visibility of the Unified Water Label.

“They have shown that the industry has the solution and

can lead the change in consumer awareness and behaviour that is required to support the products available. It is clear that our message is being heard as the number of enquiries we have had from ISH is phenomenal, with 46 serious enquiries about joining the scheme.”

UWLA President Carlos Velazquez added: “The Unified Water Label is now recognised across Europe and beyond, by companies and governments that have signalled their intention to address climate change and energy efficiency.

“We have an industry-led solution that has been identified as the bench criteria for government legislation such as the Taxonomy Directive and within the ISO Standard 31600 as best practice. The newly developed shower criteria in the Energy Technology list also references the Unified Water Label. By working together, we are achieving greater visibility in the marketplace, and driving forward significant changes in attitudes to water and energy efficiency.” www.uwla.eu

HELP or HINDER?

The march of AI seems as inevitable as the growth of the internet back in the 1990s-2000s. But what will it mean for the industry, and how will current ways of working need to adapt? Equipment supplier Zoro offers some perspectives…

Like every industry in the world, construction has begun to evolve with the introduction of technology. As one of the oldest skills and professions in human history, communities across the world will always need construction in order to thrive, and now this can be advanced by tools and physical hardware or software engineered to optimise planning, designing, risk management, and execution of schemes.

In the current climate, the growth of artificial intelligence is a hot topic across all industries, but what is the real impact likely to be in the short, medium and long-term? A report released in 2020 by McKinsey highlighted the growing use of business solutions that incorporate AI. The report also points out the efficiency

and underperformance that is often prevalent in the construction industry, stating that despite representing 13% of global GDP, it has only seen a productivity growth of 1% a year for the past 20 years. AI therefore presents itself as a disruptive force with the potential to improve efficiency in this major global industry – but as in many other fields, companies must carefully navigate how to do so.

DAY-TO-DAY INTEGRATION

Construction is an industry that often experiences issues with budgets and deadlines, either due to problems in the workforce, supply chain logistics, or even uncontrollable factors like the weather. AI software can provide more

accurate timelines and cost projections for a project by analysing a firm’s historical data. This can give both stakeholders and project managers with more realistic deadlines to work towards, resulting in clearer communication and, ideally, fewer disappointments. Another use of AI that is already popular in onsite environments is the employment of drones to conduct aerial surveys. These can be a great way to spot any issues that are not visible from the ground, and are also invaluable when documenting and communicating progress to remote collaborators such as international partners or investors.

Automated machines and even more sophisticated ‘robot workers’ are also becoming

bikbbi.org.uk 43
Artificial Intelligence

more commonplace, and are no longer exclusive to private, high-budget projects. As they can technically operate for 24 hours, seven days a week, using robot workers can be a great way to delegate menial tasks, boost productivity, and meet particularly tight deadlines.

EMPLOYEE EXPERIENCE AND SAFETY

One of the main benefits of using AI-powered machinery and robots is to reduce the risk of harm to onsite workers. Using them to lift heavy objects or investigate unstable areas therefore helps firms avoid injury and liability, as can using drones to provide aerial views of a site during risk assessment.

Aside from the physical roles AI can play in project management, it can also benefit the safety and overall workplace environment. Administrative processes like inputting sick days and annual leave can be made much easier by artificial intelligence, as it will automatically adjust the work rota to assign shifts to different employees. Using interactive reporting tools in this way also has the potential to increase safety, such as tracking and containing cases of Covid-19 across a worksite.

NEGATIVE IMPACTS

One of the main drawbacks of AI can be the cost. Investing in and maintaining robotic hardware is expensive so, for many companies, it is only possible to make this kind of transition if they are of sufficient scale. AI therefore tends to be more common in

the industry at the software level, at least for the time being. There is also the possibility of AI being vulnerable to malfunctions or outside attacks like data leaks, which is a concern in terms of maintaining employee’s privacy.

Another concern regarding automated tools and hardware is the threat of unemployment for people in the workforce. While most firms use AI to delegate menial jobs, leaving workers free to add value elsewhere, there is a possibility that some roles in the future could be allocated to robots instead of people. However, humans can be innately flexible, adaptable, and solve problems on the spot – important qualities in a skilled profession like installation or construction. So, it is important to remember that in its current state, AI does not have this ability and the current direction of travel is to support rather than replace human workers.

Kelly Friel, Digital Product

Manager at Zoro, said: “AI is influencing almost every industry across the world, and as it becomes more accessible and widespread, discussion is rife about its benefits and drawbacks. In an often-inefficient industry like construction, AI has the potential to improve time and resource management as well as profit margins when used correctly. This might be in the form of physical hardware like drone and heavy lifting robots, or software that aids design and administration.

“Concerns around AI such as unemployment and data leaks aren’t completely unfounded, and this is something firms will need to navigate in the years ahead. However, in the meantime, AI demonstrates smart ways to improve onsite safety conditions and streamline administrative processes for employees.”

On reflection

Bathroom supplier HiB has released two new ranges to enhance its illuminated mirror offering…

Both designed in their own distinct style and with a range of practical features, the Arcane and Cassini mirrors from HiB have been designed for use above a bathroom vanity unit and across other areas of the home.

Cassini’s clean and modern design concept makes it a versatile mirror suitable for a variety of spaces. With no straight edges, a deep band of illumination around the mirror and a chamfered diffuser to create a gentle glow, the Cassini Curve and Round both offer soft styling that focuses on maximising illumination.

The Cassini mirrors are

operated using a touchless sensor and feature integrated colour temperature changing technology and a heated pad to reduce condensation on the mirror’s surface, greatly enhancing the user experience after a bath or shower.

The Arcane range also includes a heated pad and touchless operation to operate the mirror’s colour-temperature changing-enabled illumination. Available in two finishes, black and brushed brass – with Curve, Round and Pill shapes in a variety of sizes – there is plenty of choice to suit every style of bathroom and requirements.

Ash Chilver, HiB Sales Director, said: “Round and curved mirrors have a strong popularity among bathroom designers and these new ranges offer a plethora of options that maximise style, while also offering the features we know our customers love.

“Each mirror has been designed to be hung portrait or landscape, opening up wider options for installation within a bathroom design. It’s fantastic to see Arcane and Cassini launched as our latest products to the market and they are perfect for pairing with the latest bathroom trends.”

Also new for 2023 is the 100cm Bellus mirror, an expansion to the existing Bellus range in a larger dimension, created to offer extra drama and opulence to the space.

HiB is a major supplier to UK and Irish bathroom retailers of products such as mirrors, cabinets, lighting and furniture and has more than 30 years of experience in the industry.

Getting savvy over greener heating

Worcester Bosch has launched a new video series that aims to support installers in guiding customers’ understanding of future choices for greener home heating

Greener Home Heating
TV presenter Angellica Bell hosts the new series on green options for the home

Heating and hot water manufacturer Worcester Bosch, has launched its new Savvy Series to support installers in guiding homeowners through the various options and advantages around future green home heating technologies.

With the cost of living a huge ongoing topic impacting the lifestyles of millions of UK homeowners, the new content series is part of an extensive push by Worcester Bosch to deliver quality and impactful energy saving tips to homeowners to help curb the cost of household spend and energy usage. It will also provide much needed guidance for consumers to empower them when it comes to choosing future greener heating systems for their homes.

The Savvy Series will be fronted by TV presenter and consumer champion Angellica Bell, with each video revealing new tips on how homeowners can either save money in the face of skyrocketing household bills or gain a better understanding of greener heating options for their home. The series also simplifies greener home heating, giving the viewer a better understanding of the future technology that may be available to them. The home heating solutions covered include hydrogen, heat pumps and hybrid systems.

Savvy Series presenter Angellica Bell said: “Many of us don’t realise just how energyintensive our homes can be, and

as a result, how much it can chip away at our finances. By making a few quick changes to the way we set-up our homes, it can really make a huge difference. I hope the Savvy Series helps homeowners make savings on their energy bills as well as guide them to making greener heating choices.”

Among the topics covered by the series – which is available on the Worcester Bosch YouTube channel and its website – are:

• Being the boss of your home heating and saving on energy bills;

• Getting to grips with hybrids;

• Hearing about heat pumps;

• The benefits of home air conditioning;

• Hello to hydrogen.

Bosch, said: “The cost-of-living crisis shows no signs of stopping, leaving millions of us with rising household bills – and with that, mounting pressures enforcing us to consider cut-backs in all parts of our lives to cope.

“We’re delighted to have Angellica as the face of our Savvy Series. Her involvement will help us reach more homeowners with both energy-saving tips and the right guidance to help them transition to the greener heating future.”

Richard Lloyd, a Cannockbased installer, added: “Future home heating solutions – what they are, and how they can help – is something customers often ask us about. The landscape is complex for those unfamiliar with the various options, and it can be quite scary to get your head around.

“This series will really support the industry in communicating to customers in new, engaging and simplistic terms not only what the different types of technologies are, but how customers can benefit from each one. This’ll be a great tool we can reference in our customer communications.”

Q &Awith

Please tell us about your role at BiKBBI

As a Registration Officer at BiKBBI, I am part of the team responsible for growing registrations and managing the onboarding process for new BiKBBI members. I am often the first point of contact for businesses thinking about BiKBBI registration or those starting the application process, which we aim to make as smooth as possible. Another important part of my job is ensuring that newly registered installation businesses are aware of all the benefits and services they have access to as BiKBBI members, and obtaining feedback from our members about what other products and services they would benefit from and passing this on to the relevant areas of the organisation.

What did you do before joining BiKBBI?

Prior to joining BiKBBI, I ran my own health & fitness business full time, which I still do on a part-time basis. Whilst the health industry is completely different to the world of KBB, my entrepreneurial nature and my experience of running my own small business is a great asset in my current role as I fully understand the challenges and needs that installation business owners and sole traders have.

What do you find most rewarding about your role? For me, the best part about my

Heidi Button

In every issue, we meet members of the BiKBBI team for a quick-fire questionnaire. This time, we speak to Heidi Button, Registration Officer, about her job, and what working at BiKBBI means to her.

job is that every day I provide help and support to small businesses – whether that be existing members or potential members. Guiding them through the process, offering useful advice and helping them to maximise the benefits of being BiKBBI registered has a positive impact on their business and it’s great to know that I played a small part in that.

What makes BiKBBI different from other places you’ve worked?

The team work ethic at BiKBBI HQ is fantastic. If one department is under pressure, others automatically step in and support to ensure the business flows efficiently. Having been self-employed for so long, I felt a little daunted about coming into a team environment, but I needn’t have worried –everyone is so supportive.

Tell us something most people might not know about you?

At the age of 14, I was coached by members of the England Netball team, and later had trials to be in the England Under-16 squad.

And finally, what are you working on currently?

I’m still fairly new to the business and, after a massive change in my career path, self-development is key for me. My passion has always been to support others by getting them to see their own potential and be the best version of themselves… and I’m also working on that for myself too. Oh, and planning a trip to Disney!

MIXED expectations

The outlook is ‘moderate’ for home renovation professionals according to a new survey by Houzz

Project by Space Shack (photo: Chris Snook)

A survey of those working in home renovation found a tempered perspective for the year ahead, but with many positives to be gleaned despite the current economic challenges.

The report by Houzz provides an outlook on 2023 and a review of 2022 performance for residential renovation and design businesses, based on data reported by industry professionals in the Houzz community. Around 40% of companies across the industry anticipate a good or very good year and 42% expressing a neutral outlook for 2023. While the sentiment is less widespread than last year, more businesses expect increases in revenues and profits for 2023 than those expecting decreases (50% and 44%, respectively, versus 21% and 30%, respectively).

Marine Sargsyan, Houzz Staff Economist, said: “Professionals in the home renovation and design industry have a moderate

outlook about business activity in 2023, despite concerns around current economic conditions. Though less prevalent than last year, more businesses anticipate revenue growth.

“The 2023 Houzz State of the Industry reveals that professionals are willing to implement a diverse combination of marketing, financial and customer-centric strategies to achieve their business targets amidst high overhead and materials costs.”

Among the major findings, the survey found that two in five residential companies expect this will be a good or very good year (40%), and 42% express a neutral outlook. Design and build firms are the most optimistic, with 62% anticipating a good or very good year, followed by interior designers (48%).

More businesses among the industry groups surveyed expect increases in revenue in 2023 (50%) than those expecting decreases (21%), albeit the sentiment is less widespread than last year.

DEMAND ON THE UP

A larger share of businesses believe that demand for their services will improve (52%), rather than decrease (31%). Design and build firms, in line with their overall outlook for business in 2023, feel confident about demand this year, with almost threequarters anticipating an increase (73%).

PRODUCT AVAILABILITY IMPROVES

The availability of products and materials was less of a concern in 2022, compared with 2021. The proportion of firms citing it as one of their top three business challenges fell eight percent (12% compared with 20% in 2021).

COSTS OF DOING BUSINESS

More firms across all of the industry groups cited an increase in the cost of doing business (82%) versus those citing a decrease (4%), with the share of businesses reporting an increase rising by five percentage points this year (82% compared with 77% in 2021).

DIVERSE BUSINESS STRATEGIES

More than two-thirds of businesses target larger budget projects (67%) and more than half increased marketing and sales efforts (55%) to achieve expected growth in 2023. Businesses also plan to improve customer experience and employee productivity (45% and 33%, respectively).

HIRING SLOWS

Many residential renovation and design companies continued to hire employees in 2022 (22%), although at a slower rate than in 2021 (29%). Design and build firms continue to lead the industry in hiring at 46%, followed at a distance by interior designers and architects (20%, each).

The Houzz Survey was conducted among home renovation firms in the Houzz UK community that offer services related primarily to residential renovation and/or design. The study was fielded from December 2022 to January 2023.

SPRING GLEAMING: Making the most of bathroom refurbs

For many homeowners, remodelling a bathroom is a truly exciting project, when they wave goodbye to an outdated bathroom suite and say hello to a fresh, sparkling, spa-worthy retreat. Steph Harris, Product Manager at Showerwall, shares some top tips for helping customers with their design options, and explains why wall panelling may just be the surface material of choice this year…

With spring in the air, homeowners are looking to refresh their properties, and according to Money.co.uk’s annual Renovation Nation Report, despite the costs, many are still willing to invest in their properties to create the home of their dreams, often prioritising certain areas for renovation, with the bathroom being one of them.

Homeowners are aspiring to design bathrooms that they really want to spend time in, whether that be creating a spastyle environment or a luxury family bathroom. But how can installers help homeowners achieve their project dreams without any dramas?

Measuring up to expectations

Bathrooms are generally small but essential rooms, so it’s important to create a space that’s practical and aesthetically

pleasing, as this is a room that will be used every day. From an installer’s point of view, it is about managing a customer’s expectations and helping them to design a room that will fit with their space, lifestyle, and budget.

Choosing a design

There are so many styles and designs out there to choose from that this can be a minefield for homeowners. To help your customers visualise their dreams, why not recommend they take a look at some trend guides or even utilise an online visualiser to help them see what their design ideas could look like.

It’s all in the timing

Make sure to manage a client’s expectations when it comes to a bathroom project timescale. Ensure all of the elements have been accounted for and set a realistic deadline for completion to avoid any miscommunication.

Material matters

When it comes to bathrooms, tiles have long been the traditional choice. However, they require specialist installation, are time consuming to install thanks to the grouting, and can be a challenge for homeowners to keep clean.

With this in mind, wall panelling may offer an ideal alternative for many bathroom refurbs this spring. Thanks to its ease of fitting, its hygienic properties due to lack of grouting and the fact that it’s simple to clean, wall panelling is becoming ever more popular.

Shower panels offer quick and easy installation meaning installers can save time and money, helping to keep projects – and the client’s budget – on

bikbbi.org.uk 56 Wall Panelling
“Panels can be retrofitted over existing tiles, reducing preparation time, which would otherwise add more labour on to a job”

track. In addition, specialist wet trades are not required to install bathroom panelling, which offers an opportunity for any tradesperson to carry out the work themselves without having to bring in a subcontractor, making a difference to the bottom line.

There are hundreds of design choices now available, ranging from tile-effect designs and replica marble finishes to wallpaper-inspired prints. Homeowners can choose panels that replicate the look of metro, scallop or herringbone tiles – all popular on-trend looks that can be intricate and time-consuming to achieve with individual tiles – or they can opt for marbleinspired panels offering the look and feel of organic surfaces, without the expense of natural materials.

Panels can be retrofitted over existing tiles, reducing preparation time, which would otherwise add more labour on to a job. Simply cut to size, fix to the wall, fit any finishing trims required and seal.

With many homeowners looking to undertake bathroom refurbishments this year, installers can perhaps add another string to their bow by utilising wall panelling. Less installation time, no specialist wet trades and a plethora of designs for the homeowner to choose from –a win-win situation all around.

Offering a helping hand

The XtraHand, an innovative hands-free dust extraction tool for drilling, cutting and grinding, is now available exclusively from Häfele UK. The device fits onto hose-mounted vacuums, sticks to almost any flat surface and is ideal for tradespeople, furniture manufacturers and DIYers helping to minimise airborne particles and mess.

The XtraHand, which appeared on the BBC’s Dragons’ Den in March 2023, is compatible with all drill bits, including spade, bullet, masonry and auger bits, as well as tile drills and hole saws. Invented by carpenter and cabinet maker, Alan Gillett, it also works on various surfaces such as wood, metal, plastic, concrete and brick – and will even attach to ceilings.

Helping professionals conform to Health & Safety Executive requirements on protecting against the risks of hazardous construction dust, The XtraHand gives ‘on-tool’ extraction and helps trades keep sites and customers’

homes tidy.

“The XtraHand is a simple yet ingenious bit of kit that anyone who uses a drill or grinder should have in their toolbox and we can see why it caught the attention of dragon, Peter Jones,” said Tom Fletcher, Product, Innovation & Development Manager at Häfele UK. “While Alan decided to turn down the dragon’s offer, we’re excited to have formed an exclusive distribution agreement.

“As a manufacturer and distributor, we supply thousands of tradespeople and furniture manufacturers, each year with components, fixing materials, tools and PPE, so adding The XtraHand to our range was an easy decision. We know it’ll be a welcome extra pair of hands that will help protect our customers and cut down on cleaning up.”

Alan Gillett, inventor of The XtraHand, said: “As a carpenter and cabinet maker by trade, I’ve used Häfele products for years so when Tom and I met, it felt

and I knew the company’s scale and customer base had the potential to take The XtraHand to the next level.

“When people see the product, their immediate reaction is: ‘why hasn’t this existed before?’ so I can’t wait for more tradespeople to see The XtraHand and use it to safeguard their health and improve their efficiency on jobs.” www.hafele.co.uk/xtra-hand

Roman’s Environmental Journey

Roman has furthered its commitment to sustainability by updating all company cars to fully electric, helping to reduce its carbon emissions. Roman has electric charging points for all cars installed at its headquarters in County Durham.

The firm says that moving to fully electric vehicles is just a small part of its environmental journey to becoming Carbon Zero; Roman has been working on its environmental credentials for well over 10 years, embracing the Circular Economy and achieving Carbon Neutral status in 2021.

All Roman products are sustainable and Roman embed the circular economy principles throughout its supply chain which focus on very high levels of recycling before and after the life of a product. All the aluminium used in Roman’s production is 100% recycled before use and at the end of life it is extremely easy to recycle and re-use aluminium back at its original value.

Likewise, Roman’s solid surface moulding and fabrication plants use material which is predominantly natural stone which can once again be reground back to its original

value and be re-used. The brass used for the hardware such as shower enclosure handles is 100% of recycled material before use, without compromising on strength or functionality. Roman is also working very closely with suppliers of glass and expect to be close to 100% recycled content in 2024.

Additionally, all packaging is made from recycled card in the first instance and can be fully recycled after its use and all inserts are also card rather than polystyrene or plastic.

David Osborne, Chief Executive Officer at Roman, said: “Moving all company cars to fully electric was the next step on our environmental journey, with the long-term goal of becoming Carbon Zero. We place huge focus on sustainability and further breakthroughs will be coming over the next few years.”

Clear the air:

Franke’s latest hoods purify the air and remove VOCs

energy efficient extractor.

Franke’s latest extractors also offer extractors that eliminate Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) found in some household products such as paint, which can have a detrimental effect on health. With consumers so tuned into indoor air quality, these dual-purpose hoods are excellent options to recommend for installation and, importantly, can be installed with the same ease as a standard cooker hood.

Mythos Air Hub

The Mythos Air Hub range incorporates a high-performance extractor with a state-of-the-art air sanitisation system. The hood eliminates vapours and cooking odours, and its dedicated UV-C lights remove up to 99.99% of viruses and bacteria.

The air treatment system can be operated in three different modes: a manual setting which can be switched on and off when required which automatically switches off after 24 hours; an intensive mode that purifies the air at maximum speed in

the shortest possible time and a night option that provides a long cycle of air purification with minimum noise.

Air Hub is available in a choice of three models – Vertical, T-Shape and Ceiling – to suit all kitchen styles and, although recommended for recirculating extraction, can also be installed in ducted mode.

AQ Sense

There is increasing concern among consumers about VOCs found in household products such as cleaning supplies, paints, and adhesives which can contribute to indoor air pollution. As well as seeking products that are labeled ‘low VOC’ or ‘VOC-free’, demand is growing for technology that helps rid the air of these potentially harmful chemicals.

With its Air Quality Sensor technology, Franke’s AQ Sense range is designed to constantly monitor air quality, temperature and humidity and filter out the VOCs to restore fresh air, alongside being a high performing,

All three models in the AQ Sense range are designed to activate automatically in AUTO mode once unsafe levels are detected. Once the air quality has returned to a satisfactory level, it will automatically shut off, avoiding any energy waste.

Users can stay in control of up-to-date air quality information via the dedicated Franke Cloud app which also allows them to easily control many of the hood’s functions such as switching the hood on and off and adjusting the extraction speed via a smartphone or tablet. Jo Sargent, Sales and Marketing Director at Franke UK, said: “Installers who are aware of the growing wellbeing trend and understand the latest extraction technologies aimed at creating healthier homes, will be in a prime position to secure repeat business and earn positive recommendations from satisfied customers.

“By demonstrating their knowledge and expertise, installers can offer valuable guidance to consumers seeking to improve their indoor air quality and overall health, ultimately setting themselves apart as trusted professionals in the industry.”
