“2022 has certainly kicked off with a bang! (A belated Happy New Year by the way)!!!
A highly successful Conference, followed by our first ever Awards -
Whilst many will understand the need for an organisation like ours to undertake a conference, there may be one or two out there that question our thought process about the Awards – especially during these times of uncertainty.
Well, its really quite simple and the answer two-fold. Firstly, it’s incredibly important to recognise businesses and individuals and excellence. In my opinion, I don’t think the efforts of installers, managers or departments operating within the installation part of our industry are recognised enough. There are some amazing contributions out there that are often overlooked – and that needs to be fixed.
Secondly, we need to change the mentality of many and get installations on the map! We need to attract the very best to the industry and publicly show how brilliant installation specialists are. The industry is not the stereotypical ‘builders-arse’ that many people incorrectly believe it is – and awards are just one of the many things we do to demonstrate that…
The businesses and individuals that won, and all those nominated, are shining examples of how great our industry is and I both congratulate them for their involvement in our very first ceremony. Without them, and many like them, our industry would be in crisis… because, as I always say, you can make great product, you can design and sell beautiful rooms – but if the fitter is poor, or not there, the whole process collapses immediately.
2022 will be an amazing year for our industry – and as usual, we’ll be right behind the thousands of industry professionals, supporting, guiding and leading positive change.”

BiKBBI News - 2022 Conference
5 BiKBBI News - 2022 Conference
The 2022 BiKBBI conference was the biggest and boldest yet, as CEO Damian Walters outlined his vision to raise the profile of the installation industry and attract much-needed new talent.
Addressing an audience of industry professionals, Members of Parliament and the trade press at the QEII Centre in the heart of Westminster, Damian discussed the importance of international links and collaboration, apprenticeships and promoting diversity within the installation industry for a sustainable future.
BiKKBI’s honorary patron, Stephen Metcalfe MP, the Government’s Apprenticeship Ambassador said, “I fully support the institute in driving up standards and really making a difference. Renewed appreciation of the home with an estimated £70bn spent on home improvements in 2020-1 demonstrates the huge opportunities for this sector. Our collective mission is to ensure the talent pipeline remains full and diverse so that we can offer rewarding and well-paid, successful careers. Apprenticeships are good for the individual and good for businesses, attracting and retaining talent in the sector.”
The first phase of this year’s BiKBBI outreach programme begins this spring with a focus on supporting the North of England, via engaging with schools and colleges in Doncaster, South Yorkshire. “One of the biggest focuses for 2022-3 and beyond is around engaging with people on the frontline,” said Damian. “So instead of having an official presence at the KBB show this year, we be going out into the community, talking to kids about our industry and the opportunities for them in it. If you don’t catch them young they won’t know about who we are and what we do, or the opportunities available to everybody through school and college. Our new KBB Fitted Interiors Apprenticeship qualification level 2 is the equivalent of a mid-level GCSE and we will continue to develop level 3 and 4 qualifications so that we can demonstrate the breadth of careers available – including being an installation director for a leading brand or running a highly profitable small business and managing a team.”
Stephen Johnson, Managing Director at Quooker, urged manufacturers and retailers to support the install sector. “It is essential that we bring more young people and diversity into our industry or we will fail. There is a skills gap which may take 10 years to cure, and it will be at least five years before we fix the systemic failure. Without installers, we have no industry. That is why as a business we invested £250,000 to address this problem and will continue to do so for at least the next three years to advance initiatives far earlier that would otherwise be possible. You can have the most amazing product but the installer leaves the lasting impression. We must compete with the likes of Apple, Google and Facebook to attract and retain the best new talent. We make people’s lives better through our design and creativity – it is essential that we unite and ensure that Damian and his amazing institute reverses the skills crisis and saves our industry in double-quick time.”

BiKBBI News - 2022 Conference
"To feel that support given the challenges we’ve got ahead has been extremely positive. We have no doubts about the biggest challenge our industry is facing and know how, via a robust scheme of apprenticeships, we can build a talented workforce for the future of KBB.”
BiKBBI’s commitment to enhance the professionalism and reputation of the install industry involves facing very real challenges. “We are operating within a skills gap during a time of recovery and bounce-back. We must avoid the risk of reputational damage which affected the double-glazing industry and renewables market and take an honesty pill. Consumer spend will be diluted as people go back to work and go on holiday, so problems in the supply chain will feel better, but they won’t go away. In fact, Brexit and Covid have only ripped off the plaster of a festering wound due to years of underinvestment in vocational education,” said Damian.
With this in mind, speeding up and digitalising processes will be paramount to the professionalism of installers, so BiKBBI is developing a new app for alternative dispute resolution as well as focussing on international relationship building to pool resources and best practice.
“We’re already seeing some really good learning coming from our conversations with our sister organisations in North America. In fact, we face similar challenges on both sides of the pond and indeed ‘down under.’ We are a huge believer in collaboration and learning, we will be sharing best practise and solutions to common problems that we face. The world is a much smaller place now from a digital perspective so it makes sense for us to work together towards a common goal,” Damian explained.
Mandatory registration for home improvement operatives is another pillar of the BiKBBI strategy and boost consumer confidence. “Innovation is critical and so is compliance – the bolt-on needs to be the focus otherwise we run the risk of being an unregulated industry,” said Damian.
different cultures, former servicemen and women returning to civilian life or women, who have long been under-represented in the industry. “Much like football, installation has been seen as a white, male game,” said Damian. “We must stop being so blinkered. Diversification in the workforce is essential – not to fill quotas, but because it is the right thing to do! Vocational learning for women is stuck in the 1970s with beauty or hairdressing seen as the only option and we are lacking the different perspective that a female fitter can bring. We must be far more open than ever before.”
The potential of the install sector as part of the wider KBB industry remains critical to the UK recovery itself. Paul Scully MP, the Minister responsible for Small Business, Consumers and Labour Markets celebrated the ingenuity and flexibility of the sector. He said,“Small businesses power every recovery which is why initiatives like the Government's ‘Help to grow’ scheme is enhancing management training for today’s leaders. By digitalising processes, you can spend less time on admin and more time on core skills and the Government wants to help you navigate this by offering vouchers for software costs. We want to make the UK the best place to start and scale a business with the ability to network peer to peer and with mentoring from those a year or two down the line. We commend the hard work installers do across the nation.”
Shadow Minister for Business, Seema Malhotra MP said, “What your industry does every day is relevant to every single person in the country. People underestimate the skills, experience and passion craft the trades bring to the community. Your industry has a strong voice and presence in parliament. The Government must work with business to address rising costs, taxes and the cost-ofliving crisis as delayed spending is delaying home improvements. Skills development is absolutely essential for industry, not to survive but to thrive. Protecting the environment is very important and the KBB industry has a really important part to play as we move to a low carbon economy ensuring that people have greener homes helping families to choose the very best products for their kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms.”
Diversification of the talent pool is essential to enhance succession planning in the install industry as the majority of players are 50-something white males. Key note speaker, Stuart Lawrence, author and youth worker said, “We need to be talking to our children as early as possible about their career paths and appreciate that they are influenced by their parents and teachers. We need to educate parents that there are some very worthwhile careers available without incurring student debt so that they can see that learning a trade will give their children freedom, longevity and self-sufficiency in the workforce.”
Opening up the industry to new entrants will require sensitivity with mentoring for both apprentices and managers to better support those from disadvantaged backgrounds,
The entire conference was summarised by Michelle Daniels, Head of Marketing and Communications at the BiKBBI, who commented, “We’ve had a fantastic line up of speakers and participants for our conference and awards. We’re addressing not only the biggest topics and challenges facing not only the KBB sector but businesses and industries in the UK. We’ve been fortunate to host three Members of Parliament which is no mean feat. The fact that we have those MPs signifies and demonstrates the ready fact that the Government is placing our industry and out sector at the front of what they’re doing. To feel that support given the challenges we’ve got ahead has been extremely positive. We have no doubts about the biggest challenge our industry is facing and know how, via a robust scheme of apprenticeships, we can build a talented workforce for the future of KBB.”

OH, WHAT A NIGHT!
Wow, what a night! The very first BiKBBI awards were held on the 1st February and after months of meticulous planning and despite outside threats like COVID restrictions meaning a possible delay to the event, it went off as planned and as the saying goes ‘it’ll be alright on the night’ and so it proved – in fact, to be more accurate, it was more than alright!
Around 150 guests gathered in the reception of The Queen Elizabeth II Centre in Westminster at 6.30pm for pre-dinner drinks and from the early buzz it was obvious the evening would go well. Dinner was served at 7.30pm and then post dinner, and following a welcome and introduction by Darren Summerfield, Co-Founder of Kitchen Focus Magazine, and Michelle Daniels, Head of Marketing & Communications at the BiKBBI, the serious business of the awards presentations got underway.
The Awards were hosted by non-other, than ‘National Treasure’ Eddie the Eagle Edwards
who was highly entertaining delivering various amusing anecdotes taken from his extraordinary life. Eddie then remained on stage to present the awards. Nominations for each category were announced and the winners duly received their award from Eddie Edwards (please see nominees and winners on page 12).
All in all, the BiKBBI Awards event was a massive hit and is clearly here to stay, thanks go to all the BiKBBI team and partners for their belief and efforts in bring this inaugural event to fruition. BiKBBI, CEO, Damian Walters enthused, “The support that KBB Review has given us had been second to none and without doubt, they provide the number 1 awards for this industry and we will continue to support them going forward. He continued, “However, there is an appetite for rewarding excellence, and being in a position to host our own awards is something which thrills and delights me personally. We needed our own awards and were overwhelmed by the numbers

BiKBBI MOURNS PASSING OF ADVISORY BOARD MEMBER VINCE LINNANE
The British Institute of Kitchen, Bedroom & Bathroom Installation is saddened to share the news that Advisory Board Member Vince Linnane has passed away.
Joining the BiKBBI Advisory Board in March 2016, Vince contributed significantly to the strategic development of the organisation, in particular with the Apprenticeship Programme and the various initiatives introduced to protect consumer-tradespeople transactions – two areas he had a particular passion for.
A highly respected City of London insurance specialist and director at Chimera Insurance, Vince was a committed industry man, connected with both our industry charity, The Furniture Makers Company as Treasurer, and with The Dispute Resolution Ombudsman as a Non-Executive Director.
Damian Walters, BiKBBI, CEO, commented today by saying, “Not only have we lost a dear friend and colleague, but the industry has lost a larger-than-life character. Vince was quite possibly one of the most genuine gentlemen I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting and he was committed to the industry and the protection of others.”
Damian went on to say: “I’m truly devastated at the news as I know many of his industry friends and colleagues are. He was always the first to commit and unusually the last to leave. He leaves so many of us with fond memories and a legacy in his achievements, especially with our organisation. Vince will be missed by us all. We have lost one of life’s true gents”.
BiKBBI would encourage those wishing to donate to charity in memory of Vince, to do so by clicking here
DON WALTERS - A PERSONAL TRIBUTE
I’m extremely sad to report the passing of Don Walters, father of Damian who is co-founder and current Chief Executive Officer of the BiKBBI.
This is coming personally from me because as Don was never a part of the BiKBBI in name, Damian may not feel The Installer Magazine is the right platform for this announcement.
However, I have not given him an opportunity to express any potential concerns as in my opinion, Don, along with his lovely wife Gill, played a significant part in the formation and continued success of the institute with their total support and unswerving belief in their son. I think we all agree that Damian has surpassed even their expectations!
Janine (our Designer) and I have had the pleasure of Don’s company socially on a number of occasions since we launched the magazine and he was great company, not the loudest in the room but a gentleman, with a great sense of humour and an endearing disposition.
Our hearts go out to all the Walters family at this difficult time.
I cannot finish this tribute without a nod to Vince Linnane who too has passed recently, another really nice chap who contributed greatly to the BiKBBI in recent years. His family too are in our thoughts.

GLOBAL LAUNCH FOR ROCA’S NEW ONA COLLECTION
Roca has launched its new Ona collection in a global live-streaming event from the Joan Miró Foundation in Barcelona. The presentation was simultaneously followed by 4000 people around the world.
The presentation was conducted by some of the professionals involved in its design, development, and production processes as well as its communication campaign. Marc Viardot, Roca Group’s Corporate Marketing and Design Director; Carolina Velasquez, Chief Designer at NOA Intelligent Design; Gae Benedito, Senior Product Designer at Benedito Design; Gabriel Escamez, Founder of the interior design studio Cobalto; and Daniel Ayuso, Creative Director of the branding agency Clase Bcn, took part in a round table conducted by Nuria Moliner, Architect, Communicator and Researcher.
There were also live link-ups to Roca factories in Anadia (Portugal) and Gavà (Spain) to learn about the production processes of the collection’s ceramic pieces and brassware.
Marc Viardot revealed the first images of Roca’s new launch, defined by a Mediterraneaninspired design with soft shapes and geometric lines. Viardot highlighted the values of the new collection: “A timeless, highly functional and accessible design, respecting natural materials and having a transversal approach to sustainability”.
Ona’s development has been orchestrated by the Roca Design Centre team involving teams from the Benedito Design studio and NOA Intelligent Design. Deploying the latest technological innovations, new standards of hygiene and comfort have been achieved in all product categories.
As for the working methodology, Gae Benedito explained that “we have worked like one single team. The Roca Design Centre contributes its knowledge and expertise in the design and production of bathroom space elements and we provide a creative proposal that meets those requirements. Together we have come up with the final solution.” In this sense, Carolina Velasquez pointed out that “in our case, for the basin design, we have taken advantage of all new design possibilities offered by a material like Fineceramic®, exclusively developed by Roca.”
The interior designer Gabriel Escamez highlighted the wide range of elements that make up the collection: “Ona collection is elementary and organic, connected with nature and easy to integrate into any space. Its versatility and its wide range of dimensions make it highly compatible with furniture and
accessories. This is something that I really value as an interior designer.” Finally, Daniel Ayuso of Clase Bcn, the studio in charge of the art direction of the communication campaign, recalled that “Ona is a Catalan word that means ‘wave’, a concept that takes us to the Mediterranean Sea, which is intrinsically linked to Roca.”
To conclude the presentation Marc Viardot stressed that “we want to strive for the best solutions and the best answers to all the new challenges that are confronting us, with a common ambition to make every project better and more suitable for a modern world.”
Finally, there was a live link-up to the Roca Barcelona Gallery, where the new products are exhibited until March 2022.

BATHROOM REFURBS DOWN BUT PROFESSIONAL INSTALLS ON THE RISE
WHIRLPOOL ANNOUNCES FOURTH RECORD YEAR FOR SALES
Appliance giant Whirlpool saw sales growth of 13% in 2021 driven by strong consumer demand and “cost-based pricing actions”.
Sales in 2021 hit $21.99 billion (£16.4bn), up from $19.46bn in 2020. Net profits (EBIT) came in at $2.38bn, up 35% from 2020 ($1.76bn).
The corporation also reported a record full-year earnings margin of 8.1% and a record ongoing EBIT margin of 10.8%, which it said fully offset $1bn in raw materials inflation.
Looking purely at its Q4 performance, sales were flat at $5.81bn compared with $5.8bn in the same quarter of 2020, although they were up by 8% on 2019. Q4 profits (EBIT) however were down 24% from $659 million in 2020 to $502m.
The number of people looking to refurbish their bathrooms fell in January, although more said they would hire a professional to do the work for them.
This trend was highlighted in a survey commissioned by the BMA and carried out by Opinium polled 2,000 UK adults between January 14 and January 18.
The results showed that 23% of the UK population were looking to complete a full bathrooms refurbishment in the next two years compared with 25% in June 2021. But the number of people that said they would hire a professional to do their complete bathroom renovation rose from 66% in June 2021 (and 63% in January 2021) to 67%.
The survey also looked at the number of people considering partial bathroom refurbishments, tap replacements and repairs to any bathroom fitting people were planning over the next two years, compared with June 2021.
The number considering partial bathroom refurbishments fell from 28% to 23% with no increase over June 2021 in those who said they’d hire a professional to do it, although the figure was up from 57% in January 2021.
Similarly, the number looking to carry out tap replacements fell from 31% to 28% and half said they would hire a professional, compared with 46% in June last year.
And in terms of those considering a repair to any bathroom fitting in the next two years, numbers again fell from 36% in June 2021 to 34%, with 50% looking to hire a professional to carry out the work compared with 48% in June 2021 and 46% in January that year.
Commenting on the findings, BMA chief executive Tom Reynolds said: “These latest poll results indicate the appetite for bathroom refurbs remains strong. Throughout the pandemic, the market has been buoyant, and we’re seeing people continue to plan upgrades and improvements to their homes, even if there is a slight dip in expectations, this is in the context of a period of high demand.
“There also seems to be an upward trend for using professionals, as people increasingly recognise the need to employ skilled and expert tradespeople.
“This is great news for the sector, we are seeing an increased desire for quality in the bathroom and installation industries, an indicator of the importance of the refurbishment. Consumer expectations have shifted massively over the past two years and it’s clear to see that in these encouraging poll results.”
In the EMEA region (Europe, Middle East and Africa), Q4 sales were down 0.3% to $1.41bn with profits down 50% to $20m.
The company predicts “another year of strong growth” for 2022.

TKC INVESTS £1 MILLION IN NEW PAINT LINE
Kitchen manufacturer TKC has invested £1 million in a new spray line. The upgrade will increase TKC’s capacity for its paint to order doors and help maintain the current lead time of 10-15 days.
The extension of the spray factory at its Denton Manchester HQ will help offer an enhanced paint to order service across multiple doors ranges available on its On Trend and Jigsaw portfolios.
The new facility will house a new 3000 sq ft building adjacent to TKC’s existing spray facility, housing a Cefla semi-automated paint line. Operated by robotic machinery, the new system will deliver a perfectly smooth matt painted finish with the assurance of consistently high quality.
The investment of the new paint line shows the popularity of painted kitchens, and it allows TKC to have greater flexibility in colour palettes. As well as the new facility, there have been ongoing operational improvements as the company responds to high consumer demand, which includes increasing stock levels to a record £8m.

NOLTE EXPANDS UK STORES WITH ACQUISITION OF THE KITCHEN GROUP
German kitchen manufacturer Nolte Küchen has acquired The Kitchen Group Retail Company Ltd’s six showrooms for an undisclosed sum.
EASY BATHROOMS TO EXPAND AFTER £13M CASH INJECTION
Bathroom retailer Easy Bathrooms is set to increase its turnover and staffing levels by 50% following a £13 million cash injection.
The Yorkshire-headquartered retailer employs 670 people across its nationwide chain of stores and the announcement comes after Easy Bathrooms celebrated the milestone of opening its 100th store on Boxing Day. Its rapid expansion is expected to boost turnover for Easy Bathrooms from £62.3m to £95m year on year.
The finance package it secured from Lloyds Bank will allow it to open a new warehouse that will triple pallet capacity from 15,000 to 60,000 and pave the way for the creation of up to 400 new roles.
Easy Bathrooms said that it will continue with its nationwide store roll-out and will invest in its in-house design capabilities ahead of a full range refresh. It opened 32 stores in 2021 and expects to match that rate of growth in 2022.
From Lloyds Bank, relationship director Mark Butterworth commented: “Easy Bathrooms is an instantly recognisable, trusted British brand, and we are excited to support the team as they embark on this next phase of their growth journey.
“A leading local employer in Yorkshire, they are a prime example of a brand that has expanded at a pace that is impressive, but still sustainable, tapping into market demand without sacrificing the quality they are known for.”
The deal was done on December 20 last year and sees the German manufacturer add the six Leicht Kitchen Design Centre stores owned by Liam Hopper (pictured) to its UK showroom portfolio, which already includes the six In-toto stores it acquired in March last year. That makes a total of 12 showrooms.
The studios in question are located in Sevenoaks, Battersea, Hampstead, Tunbridge Wells, Milton Keynes and Nottingham. The stores will be completely refurbished and supported by a nationwide marketing campaign.
Nolte said that the acquisition is part of its long-term strategy to focus on building and strengthening a comprehensive dealer network in the UK.
By adding new partners to its distribution network and incorporating franchise businesses within its structure, Nolte said it will use its large portfolio of stores to increase brand awareness and help it gain importance and authority in the contract and project sectors.
Nolte UK country manager Chris Rushby said: “The Kitchen Group is well known for premium kitchens Made in Germany and has a strong retail and project presence. Moving forward, the sole brand focus will be on Nolte and enhancing both retail and project activities by providing excellent services to end customers, architects and developers alike.”

BLUM SPONSOR THE INNOVATION AWARDS AT KBB BIRMINGHAM 2022
As in previous years, Blum is delighted to confirm that it will again be sponsoring the innovation awards at kbb Birmingham 2022.
The awards will be judged at the show, by a panel of six judges. Amanda Hughes - Architect & Interior Design Liaison at Blum, Richard Hibbert - KBSA Chairperson, Lindsey Rendall - BIID President, Katrina Burroughs - Design Journalist for The Times, Andy Davies - Managing Editor of kbbReview and Andy Bishop - Creative Director of kbb Birmingham.
Amanda comments that she will be looking for real innovations, which cover several key issues, that are important to the whole industry.
First of her key topics is sustainability - but combined with a credible offer. Sustainability is currently a very relevant subject, and the judges all hope to see some really innovative products for this category.
Alongside sustainability are other important considerations in the judging process. Manufacturers should try and address the issues around small living spaces, where Quality of Living is such an important consideration. End users should be considered at every stage of the manufacturing/retailer process.
Amanda also sees a gap in the market to cater for multiple needs for multiple users. Many homes now include three or even four generations, and with smaller space available, multipurpose originality will help minimise overcrowding.
The judges will create a shortlist of 10 products that will be displayed in a gallery built at the kbb event in March. There are 3 final awards: The Judges’ overall winner, the Sustainability winner and the People's Choice, which is voted for onsite by kbb visitors. These 3 winners will be announced at the event on Tuesday 8th March.

GIRA ACQUIRES 100 PER CENT OF THE SHARES IN WANDSWORTH
The arrival of 2022 has witnessed Smart building pioneer Gira, acquire Wandsworth.
Wandsworth, founded in 1904 and based in Woking, currently has 110 employees and manufactures switch ranges and professional emergency call systems for hospitals and care facilities. It has two business divisions “Wandsworth Electrical” and “Wandsworth Healthcare.”
“When two healthy, successful and independent family businesses come together with different strengths that complement each other in a special way, it is a perfect formula for growth and success. And when the culture, values and aspirations of both companies are as closely related as they are at Wandsworth and Gira, then this can only be a success story,” declared Dirk Giersiepen, Managing Partner of Gira, and Dominik Marte, Managing Marketing and Sales Director from 1 March 2022, in a personal letter to the Wandsworth staff.
Smart building specialist Gira, whose systems and solutions are sold in 40 countries, primarily in Europe and Asia, has been active in the UK since 2011, with its own sales company since 2018. By acquiring Wandsworth, Gira hopes to sustainably tap into the growth potential of the large British market and expand its market position. “The brand
recognition of Wandsworth, its large customer network, and its sales strength in the UK will allow us to access the British market in a completely different way than before,” commented Gira’s Managing Director Marketing and Sales, Dominik Marte, adding that this applied even more as Adam Sherry, owner and chief executive of Wandsworth since 2013, would continue to run the company for the next few years at both parties’ request. “His great market knowledge and his personality as a guarantor of trust and continuity are important building blocks in helping us achieve our growth targets,” said Dirk Giersiepen.
In turn, Wandsworth will benefit from the huge expertise in electronics, smart building and software that has accumulated in the Gira Group. “Wandsworth has little in-house expertise in these areas, which will continue to gain importance in our industry. Working together in the Gira Group will open up new opportunities for us on the product side,” explained Wandsworth CEO Adam Sherry. For example, KNX technology, a globally successful standard in building automation, will be available to Wandsworth in future for integration into its product range.

The Unified Water Label Association, (UWLA) will launch a series of media packs for retailers, installers and merchants at the 2022 KBB exhibition (06-09 March NEC Birmingham).
The packs have been developed for use by members across Europe to drive home the Water Matters message and help consumers understand the link between using water, energy and their carbon footprint. The pack includes a range of tools, flyers, posters, social media posts and videos, with tips and advice on

UWLA MD Yvonne Orgill says, “Consumer interest in sustainability is growing and recent research shows that they are willing to change behaviour patterns so that they can have a positive impact on the planet. “The Unified Water Label is an established and recognised smart tool that can provide consumers with the information
they need to facilitate change, making it more important than ever to make the Label visible and illustrate the benefits.
“We have the support of manufacturers. We now want to keep our focus on communication, encouraging those in the supply chain that sell and install, to ensure more of these products are used in the home.
“2022 will be a crucial year for the Water Label as we continue our dialogue with government on the introduction of mandatory label. We need the support of the industry to promote our voluntary label which is tried and tested in the marketplace. If the government does not accept

ARE BOILING WATER TAPS SAFE?
'With userfriendly, inbuilt safety mechanisms, such as Quooker’s patented double push and twist, that make it virtually impossible to turn on boiling water by accident.'
After being contacted by a reader who asked this question, we decided to get a take on the matter from BiKBBI sponsor and pioneering manufacturer for this product area, Quooker:
Boiling water taps have grown rapidly in popularity over the past ten years. Something that was originally viewed as an unnecessary luxury item has now become a household essential for millions across the globe.
Concerns about safety used to be a significant factor in dissuading people to invest in a boiling water tap, and to this day, one of the most frequently asked questions when renovating a kitchen is ‘is boiling water straight from the tap safe?’. With constant innovation, boiling water taps on the market today are completely safe to use. With user-friendly, in-built safety mechanisms, such as Quooker’s patented double push and twist, that make it virtually impossible to turn on boiling
water by accident, they are ideal for families with small children or those with restricted mobility.
Furthermore, unlike kettles, boiling water taps are static, immovable objects which cannot accidentally be spilled or tipped over. The rotatable spouts also allow users to aim precisely, for example when filling a jug or a pan, minimising the risk of spills.
Last but not least, taps dispense boiling water as an aerated flow rather than a solid jet, meaning water feels hot but not scalding to touch, should any accidental contact occur. The heavily insulated casing prevents heat from escaping and ensures the tap is not hot to touch when in use, unlike a kettle, which presents a far higher burn risk.

COOKER HOOD INSTALLATION AN EXPERT GUIDE
As demand for efficient, stylish and quiet extraction has grown with more homecentred living, so has the choice of cooker hood designs available. Consumers can now access everything from sleek wall mounted designs to statement island hood and discreet extractors that pop up from worksurfaces, with a wide array of technical features to suit their individual needs, tastes and budget.
Navigating the extensive choice of cooker hood designs
available shouldn’t be off putting to installers as fitting any cooker hood is a relatively straightforward job, with the right planning. Here, Franke’s Field Service Technician
Nathan West gives an overview of the different types of cooker hoods available and offers some top tips for a perfect installation.
What’s the difference between a ducted and recirculatory extraction?
Ducted extraction is where there is a pipe running from the cooker hood to the exterior of the property expelling all the odours and steam outside. This is the most effective method of extraction.
Re-circulatory extraction is where the steam and cooking odours are drawn up into charcoal filters and the air is neutralised and re-circulated back into the kitchen.

Franke’s ceiling mounted Crystal Island cooker hood is ideal for installation over an island unit
Are all cooker hoods compatible with all kitchens?
Ducted hoods are not always suitable depending on the architecture of the property. The best location for a ducted extractor is on an outside wall where the ducting pipe is short and will be its most efficient.
Ducted cooker hoods can be sited over the hob on an island unit, provided you can run a pipe to the outside, either in the ceiling void or by making a feature of the pipe. The ducting pipe should be as short as possible, and corners should be avoided for optimum efficiency. The ceiling void will need to be 200mm deep minimum.
All but two of Franke’s hoods are designed with the flexibility to be operated in both ducted and recirculatory mode giving the freedom for consumers to have the design they want in any position in the kitchen.
Is there anything else installers should advise consumers about so that they choose the right hood for their kitchen?
A cooker hood should have the right extraction rate and efficient ventilation based on the size of the kitchen. To work this out simply multiply the room’s length by width by height and then multiply that figure by 10. For example, for a kitchen measuring 4m x 4m x 2.5m, you would need and extractor that is capable of a minimum of 400m3 per hour to give the optimum rate of airflow for the room based on the recommended need to change the air ten times per hour.
It then comes down to design preferences and technical features such as extraction rate, noise level and energy rating and the household’s needs, for example, our Atmos hood has an anti-condensation function may appeal to people cooking with induction.
What are the main issues installers come across when fitting cooker hoods and how should they overcome them?
It may seem obvious, but not having enough pairs of hands can be an issue when fixing a cooker hood to the wall or ceiling. Ensure there’s someone on hand to help fix it in place safely and securely.
An uneven wall may mean a wall mounted cooker hood design won’t sit flush. Make sure any levelling work has been carried out prior to installation to ensure a neat fit.
When fitting a cooker hood in ducted mode drilling the outer wall or ceiling for the pipe to run through can sometimes be tricky if you don’t use the correct power tools to make the ducting outlet through the wall or ceiling.
What are the most common problems you come across after a hood has been installed?
Customers sometimes forget that their cooker hood requires some care and maintenance to make sure it continues to work efficiently. Grease filters should be cleaned around every two months and carbon filters changed around every four to avoid reduced extraction performance.
By making consumers aware of the simple maintenance steps that should be done, installers can reduce the likelihood of a return visit to a household.
NATHAN’S TOP TIPS FOR DUCTED INSTALLATION
. Ensure ducting pipes are at least 120mm in diameter, ideally 150mm.
. Ducting should be kept to a minimum by using the most direct route to the external outlet.
. Where elbow bends can’t be avoided, make sure they are wide angled and at least 30cm from the hood ducting opening.
. Only pipes with smooth, even inner surfaces should be installed. If a flexible hose must be used, ensure it is pulled tight to smooth out the ridges before fixing.
. Make sure that there is an adequate supply of fresh air from windows and adjacent doors to replace the air that is being ducted
. And finally, if you’re struggling with installation and need advice, call the Franke team, we are more than happy to assist.

INTRODUCING ZUMA
Those uninitiated, put simply, Zuma makes the kitchen, bathroom and bedroom smarter. Delivering a compelling new vision for a truly Smart Home, Zuma brings natural highquality colour rendered lighting and immersive high-fidelity audio together in one incredibly simple solution.
Zuma has reimagined how people listen to sound and experience light and so created a sound that envelops users, thus producing an experience of being in the middle of a concert hall or a tropical downpour in the rainforest. The company’s vision is to enable wellbeing by bringing better, more immersive and enjoyable listening experiences to everyone, everywhere throughout the home.
Understanding that our homes are already
full of gadgets, cables, crowded power sockets and convoluted devices, and so not wanting to add to the clutter, Zuma’s approach was to find an invisible, simpler, cableless way to deliver 360-degree high-fidelity audio and sublime lighting into kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms. They needed a ubiquitous form factor that you find in every room, and as it turns out, ceiling down-lights are ideally located to deliver great sound everywhere.
Its appearance is ultra-compact, all housed within a stylish, deceptively simple to install, ceiling light fixture, so Zuma discreetly becomes part of the home. IP65 rated, it can easily be retrofitted into any room, in any project. Unlike most other ceiling speakers, Zuma’s unique two-way speaker system is in a sealed unit
ensuring sound does not penetrate the floor above.
Bringing the benefits of lighting control, including circadian rhythm lighting and whole-home audio together, Zuma’s integrated Wellbeing mode creates the optimal atmosphere to suit any mood. Creating an extraordinary canopy of sound that is rich in detail and virtually invisible, Zuma turns a bathroom into a spa; a home gym into a spin studio; a bedroom into a sanctuary; a family room into a cinema or even a kitchen into a disco (no sound-bars needed).
The company state that complex, time consuming and costly custom installation can now be a thing of the past. For more information, visit:

BEWARE! TAX RETURNS ARE OVERDUE!
A happy new year to all.
Dean Flood, Rowland Hall Chartered Certified Accountants
'HMR&C have however kindly repeated the concession offered in January 2021 by announcing that due to the enduring COVID 19 pandemic, any returns filed on or before the 28th February 2022 will not receive the automatic penalty charge of £100.'
Self-Assessment Tax Return Deadlines
HMR&C have reported that 2,828 individuals filed their self-assessment tax returns on Christmas day. 31,000 of HMR&C’s ‘customers’ filed their returns in the 3 days between Christmas Eve and Boxing day. Those figures were probably bolstered by a significant number of practitioners clearing returns from their desks on Christmas Eve. Nevertheless, more than 5 million tax returns were still outstanding at the start of the new year.
For those that didn’t spend the Christmas period preparing tax returns and who had not done so previously, the deadline for filing tax returns for the 2020/2021 tax year was the 31st January 2022.
HMR&C have however kindly repeated the concession offered in January 2021 by announcing that due to the enduring COVID 19 pandemic, any returns filed on or before the 28th February 2022 will not receive the automatic penalty charge of £100.
The 31st January 2022 was also the deadline for settlement of any outstanding personal tax relating to the tax year ended 5th April 2021. However, HMR&C have indicated that tax paid in full after that date, but before the 1st April 2022, will not receive any payment surcharges. This exemption will also apply to anybody that sets up a Time to Pay Arrangement with HMR&C before the 1st April.
Time to Pay arrangements afford the taxpayer the ability to repay tax debts over a 12 month period and are available to claim online to all individual taxpayers if their total tax debt is no more than £30,000. If the total tax debt is greater than £30,000, taxpayers can still access the scheme by calling 0300 200 3822.
Please note that despite the above concessions, HMR&C will still charge interest at 2.75% on any tax not paid by the 31st January 2022.
The following should also be noted:
• All other normal late submission penalties will be imposed if returns aren’t filed by the 28th February and the normal 5% surcharge penalty will apply to payments not made or covered by a Time to Pay arrangement by the 1st April.
• The later filing of the tax return effectively extends the window of opportunity for HMR&C to open a tax enquiry on the self-assessment return.
Don’t Forget - In addition to the declaration of any normal trading profits or other taxable income, the 2020/2021 tax returns must include details of any Self Employed Income Support Scheme (SEISS) grants received in that period. They should also include any COVID support grants received from Local Authorities. There are specific boxes on the tax return for entry of these items. If in doubt, refer to your advisor but act as soon as possible.

RIGID CLICK LVT FLOORING –INSTALLATION DOS AND DON’TS
Steve Ball, Technical Services Manager for Malmo™ outlines his top tips for laying Rigid Click luxury vinyl tile (LVT) flooring.
It’s no idle claim that LVT is faster and easier to install than natural stone and wood, and this is one of the factors behind its rising popularity, alongside its credentials for being high performance, easy maintenance and offering broad design scope. The product is supplied in packs of planks or tiles that are lightweight and easy to handle and transport to jobs.
The Rigid Click installation system, where the planks and tiles are laid and locked into place, is particularly quick and easy to install, whereas stickdown requires a greater level of expertise. For example, our Malmo™ Rigid products feature Välinge 5G push down end joints meaning each
plank only requires a firm finger touch to securely click the product into place with no need for hammers or tapping tools. The fact that the end joints need less positioning space also makes the flooring ideal when working in tricky or restricted spaces such as around sanitaryware and underneath doors in bathrooms. Some rigid LVTs, including Malmo™, feature a 1mm thick underlay offering further time and cost saving benefits by eliminating the need for separate installation.
Although the Rigid Click system is straightforward to fit, we always recommend that the full instructions are read prior to installation and followed carefully, as incorrect installation will invalidate the warranty. Here are some top tips to bear in mind to ensure a correctly installed floorcovering and a satisfied end user.

Top tips for laying Rigid Click luxury vinyl tile (LVT) flooring.
1. Always allow 48 hours for the LVT product to acclimatise in the room where it is to be installed. Store the packs flat and no more than two packs high.
2. Take appropriate time to prepare the subfloor ensuring it is level. Use a good quality levelling compound with a maximum 2mm variation over a 2m x 2m space.
3. Remember that expansion gaps of 6mm are required around the perimeter of the room and any fixed items like door jams and radiator pipes. Do not obstruct any expansion gaps with objects or sealant.
4. When installed over underfloor heating, expansion gaps should be 10mm and the surface temperature not allowed to exceed 27⁰C. Refer to the full UFH instructions prior to installation.
5. Install a door profile in every doorway.
6. The maximum area of coverage without an expansion break is 10m x 10m.
7. Heavy furniture, such as kitchen furniture, cannot be installed over a rigid click LVT floor. Being fully adhered to the subfloor and more stable, Stickdown LVT can withstand heavy weights.
8. If the area has lots of glazing, e.g. a conservatory or bi fold doors, recommend to the customer to install blinds to minimise temperature variations.

CREATE A STYLISH SHOWER
IN A FEW SIMPLE STEPS
Quick and easy to fit, wall panelling can create a stylish look in shower enclosures without the time and hassle of tiling. Steph Harris, product manager at Showerwall, takes us through how to fit its Acrylic wall panelling system in a shower enclosure.
If you’re looking to create bathroom feature walls whilst
offering your customer a lowmaintenance, cost-effective alternative to tiles, Showerwall offers a large choice of stylish designs, which can create a visually striking finish. Watertight and hard-wearing, wall panelling can create a seamless look with no grouting required. It’s simple to fit, making it perfect for use in a shower enclosure.
Showerwall’s Acrylic and Custom collections offer a library of stylish and bespoke designs, manufactured using a 4mm acrylic sheet that is rear printed to create a polished, glass-like finish.
The panels don’t require the use of trims and can simply be joined with Showerwall’s acrylic panel sealant, which is available in 14
colours providing exact matches to its Acrylic wall panels.
Showerwall’s Acrylic wall panelling can be installed in a shower enclosure following these steps:
54 Step-by-step
STEP 1
STEP 3
STEP 1 - GETTING STARTED
Showerwall’s Acrylic panels are available in either 900mm or 1220mm x 2440mm and its Custom panels are available in either 896mm or 1200mm x 2400mm. Both are adhered to the wall with Showerwall’s Translucent Silicone Sealant. Before you begin, ensure you are familiar with the pattern
STEP 2
configuration of your wall panels, indicated by the coloured dots.
The tools you will need include: 1200mm spirit level, a tape measure, suction cups, power drill, set square, clamps, a sealant gun and a jigsaw or circular saw. Ear protection is also recommended.
The wall panels can be fixed to an existing wall or directly over tiles, providing the surface is flat and plumb. It is essential that the walls are completely dry, clean and free from dust. If the walls are not flat, then treated battens must be used to install the panels.
STEP 3 - INSTALLING THE PANELS
Once panel one is ready to install, apply vertical beads of Showerwall Translucent Silicone Sealant to the wall 100mm apart. Next, fix the panel to the wall making sure you’re allowing a 3mm expansion gap at the internal corner. Use a straight edge to press the panel against the wall at
STEP 4
regular intervals.
For the second panel, apply the sealant as before and then fix it to the wall. Remember to maintain the same 3mm expansion gap to the face of panel one, before pressing the panel with a straight edge to fix securely to the wall.
STEP 2 - PREPARING THE FIRST PANEL
Before you begin, measure the width, height and location of the water supply. Then measure and cut panel one accordingly. You can do this with either a jigsaw or circular saw.
Refer to the installation instructions for the correct blades.
Next, mark your water supply cut-out, making sure you cut larger than required to allow for
expansion. Any internal square cuts will need to have the corners drilled out prior to cutting, as sharp 90 degree corners will crack the Acrylic.
STEP 4 - APPLYING THE SEALANT
The next step is to apply sealant down the internal corner and butter flush it to make sure there are no gaps within the seal, before finally applying the sealant to cross the shower tray and profile.
55 Step-by-step
STEP 5 - FINAL STEPS
Finally, seal the expansion gap at the ceiling edge to ensure it is watertight. Fill any holes made for pipes or showerheads with sealant, before sealing
around the fixtures and fittings. Leave for 24 hours for the sealant to set, and it is ready to use.
Once complete you will have a hard-wearing
watertight system with a 10 year customer guarantee. A full installation video can be found here.
STEP 5
Available in a range of designs, Showerwall offers Acrylic and Custom Collections as well as its attractive HPL panels.
Showerwall’s HPL panels are available in either square cut or Proclick options.
Proclick technology is a mechanical tongue and groove system that provides seamless, almost invisible joints.
The full Showerwall collection offers over 80 decors to suit all tastes, with panels
available in sizes 600mm, 900mm and 1200 x 2440mm, backed by a guarantee of up to 15-years. For further information visit:

Each slimline worksurface is made of premium compact laminate, created by compressing multiple layers of decorative paper and resin together to achieve a thickness of just 12.5mm. Featuring a solid core in complementary colours, the final product is tightly sealed to ensure it is 100 per cent
waterproof, extra tough and highly resistant to impact and abrasion.
There are 20 realistic designs and four textures to choose from. Decors range from marble, stone, sparkle and industrial concrete, while finishes include Granite, Extra Matt, Fusion (slightly raised) and Roche, which is lightly roughened to imitate stone. These are available in worksurface, breakfast bar and upstand options, as well as offering splashbacks and a wide choice of coordinating colourways that work seamlessly together when fitted in kitchens and utility rooms.
Furthermore, being equally watertight and non-porous “As an extension to our product range, Zenith performs in the same way as a stone or marble worksurface but with all the added benefits of a compact laminate. The result is an extremely versatile, super-strong, barely there solution that can be used to achieve a high-end finish but at a more affordable price point."

Work Surfaces
makes Zenith surfaces especially suitable for installing undermount sinks, creating curved edges and bespoke drainage areas, by adding contrasting grooves that expose the coloured core of the material. Fitting Zenith worktops is quick and easy to achieve too, with no specialist tooling required. Surfaces can be cut to follow curves and shapes on site, before being securely fixed in place.
The whole process is made all the easier by the fact there is no need for edging, with just a simple sanding procedure and application of linseed oil or wax required to smooth and add shine. A detailed installation guide is provided upon purchase, with additional tips available online in the form of an indepth training video and frequently asked questions.
To achieve a truly professional finish, using Bushboard’s all-in-one ‘Complete’ sealant and adhesive is also highly recommended. Available in a range of matching colours, it can be used to bond and seal worksurfaces,
upstands and splashbacks with complete confidence.
Louise Bebbington, UK Marketing Communications Manager at Bushboard, said: “As an extension to our product range, Zenith performs in the same way as a stone or marble worksurface but with all the added benefits of a compact laminate.
“The result is an extremely versatile, superstrong, barely there solution that can be used to achieve a high-end finish but at a more affordable price point. The slimline look is particularly on trend too, and perfect for achieving a minimalist effect that works especially well in open-plan spaces that are currently popular and suited to family living.
“Above all, we wanted the new Zenith worksurfaces to be uncomplicated and straight forward to install, making them ‘fitter friendly’ as well as fit for purpose. That’s why all Zenith worksurfaces come with a 10-year guarantee for extra peace of mind, making
it possible to fit, forget and move on to the next job.”
Post installation, unlike stone or ceramic, no complex care routine is required to maintain Zenith surfaces. Simply wiping spills away with a damp cloth and using a mild detergent is enough to keep the original finish clean and at its best for years to come.
The inclusion of Antibacterial Protection, which is added to the compact laminate in the form of a resin (and not a coating) during the manufacturing process, serves to slow down bacteria growth by up to 99.9 per cent for the lifetime of the surface.

The Mira Opero has push-fit, spannerfree, front of tile installation, offering the appearance of a built-in shower, without the hassle. Providing solutions to the complexities of built-in showers, installers can meet the demand for the popular bathroom design, without potential leaks in the wall cavity, tricky trims or the troubles of longer term maintenance.
The surface mounted Mira Opero also comes with 50mm pipe centres meaning it easily retrofits the Mira Agile, and thanks to its adjustable arm, installers can position the deluge overhead anywhere, offering easy fitting for every bathroom.
Operated via a push button for simple on/ off control, end-users can enjoy the generous 250mm overhead or multi-mode handset at the touch of a button, with the convenience of being able to run both heads at the same time.

PPE as we know it…
The last two years have if anything put a spotlight on the acronym ‘PPE’ and led the world to believe that it consists purely of ‘Masks, Coveralls and gloves.
BiKBBI members though will know that it is far from just that and the whole subject covers an enormous range of items that make our jobs safer personally and to those we work with.
Having the right products for the right job has never been more important and therefore the requirement for PPE and Workwear that meet specific standards as a part of more legislation is, we believe, critical.
Surprisingly, even when using what many would assume to be simple Hi-Viz products which are often seen as cheap throw away items, can see a business breaking the law if not using officially legislated garments.
With this in mind, Image On Director, Neill Boatman, spoke to the team here at The Installer magazine: “We saw the need to enhance our portfolio and knowledge-based approach in being able to supply products specific to the requirements of customers. As a result, we were delighted to be appointed distributors for the renowned brand ‘Portwest’ thus giving us access to its impressive range of ‘PPE and Workwear.
It’s implementation into our retail offering, via our online store and in-house shop available for customers to visit in person makes the Portwest range more accessible than ever.
The PPE range is substantial and covers, eye, head, hearing and respiratory protection, spill control products, GPS safety, First aid kits, wipes and kneepads etc.
The bonus for us at Image On is the diverse array of additional PPE products covered, including, Gloves, Footwear, Clothing of varying specifications such as Workwear, Flameproof, Hi Viz, Rainwear, Health and Food care in various styles, colours and fit.
The ability to not just promote quality but safety specific products mean we can now be assured our customers are covered from every aspect of their workwear.”
For more information on Portwest and the entire Image On range, visit: www.imageonworkwear.com
Health issues have dominated our lives over the last couple of years and show no sign of abating. Health & Safety issues have not gone away either and so our advice to all installers, is to get smart and check that you meet all the required criterion as soon as possible.

to get ahead of the game- below is a checklist: Your policy number and business details; Your trade or occupation; The address you’re insured at; The date when the damage or loss happened; Your VAT status and number; Bank details including the sort code, account number and name of the account holder the insurer should pay – nowadays many insurers have an electronic payment service (which

2. Provide as much detail as you can The devil’s in the detail, so provide as much of the information as early as possible, allowing insurer’s to deal with your business insurance claim more effectively.
So, before calling to discuss your claim, try to provide as much of the following information as you can:
A description of your business;
Details of exactly what happened which leads to your claim;
The full nature and extent of your loss, including details of all damage. Don’t forget any supporting evidence you can provide, such as estimates, images or original invoices, can help insurer’s settle your claim sooner;
Insurers are not looking for War and Peace, but the more in-depth you can go, the better they can understand the ins and outs of your claim and get it processed.

3. Store your policy information in a safe, easy-to-reach place
Don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today. Why not pre-empt a claim by storing the important information listed above in a secure but easy-to-access location and downloading your policy to your laptop or phone? When you’re in the middle of an emergency, the last thing you want to be doing is wasting precious time rummaging around for your business insurance policy details. Having them nearby means you can begin the claims process quicker.
4. Get emergency repair work done as quickly as you can
Damage can become worse and take longer to repair if left; for example, if a roof leak isn’t repaired, the water will continue to gather inside the structure, resulting in greater harm to not only the property, but your wallet too, due to increased expensive final repairs. If you must call out an emergency tradesperson to help limit damage to premises following an incident, always remember to keep copies of the receipts for the work carried out. That way you can include them at the beginning of your business insurance claim, which can help the process run smoother.
5. Make the claim as soon as possible
This may sound obvious, but if an incident feels like a non-emergency, you may be tempted to leave it until after the weekend. But with an insurance claim, the early bird catches the worm, and the sooner you report your claim the quicker we can set things in motion.
We all try our best to prepare for the worst, but sometimes unexpected incidents can stop us in our tracks. Reduce stress and save time and money by keeping these five simple steps in mind if the worst happens. By staying organised, you’ll feel reassured in knowing that you can make a claim quickly and efficiently, leaving you to get back to doing what you do best: keeping your customers happy.

Abode Agilis Single Lever Tap Matt Black & Brushed Brass
Abode, award-winning designer and distributor of kitchen taps, sinks, bathroom taps & showering solutions anticipates the latest 2022 market trends for kitchen sinks and taps.
Leanne Adamson, Marketing Manager at Abode says, “The need for 24/7 convenience that empowers both home and lifestyle is inspiring new levels of design in the kitchen, utility room and hybrid wash zones like the home bar and boot room. Accordingly, end users both young and old, have become part of the ‘now’ generation where time is of the essence and well-considered functionality that improves health and wellbeing is top priority. This has led to a rise in high performance kitchen taps, which add value and maintain their design integrity without compromising on style or user safety. The trend for steaming hot water and filtered water on tap is set to reach new heights in 2022, with 3 IN 1 and 4 IN 1 taps becoming a staple of the traditional and contemporary kitchen whilst helping us all save energy, reduce our use of plastic bottles and lead healthier lives.”
Following extensive market research and trends monitoring, Abode reveals trends that are set to influence kitchen design in 2022:
MULTI-GENERATIONAL LIVING:
As more of us are living in a multigenerational household, home ergonomics is a point for discussion with an emphasis on ease of use and product safety. Water safety is a number one priority with taps designed to accommodate all ages, including those with limited mobility, which are outperforming other inclusive-style taps that forego style over substance. Having a kitchen that can grow with you is going to influence design of the kitchen wash zone next year with young families, downsizers and the newly retired alike seeking future-proof taps that are easy reach, hygienic and aesthetically distinct.
Abode’s Agilis Single Lever kitchen tap, features a sweeping L shape body with knurled aerator collar, the handle is located on the front of the tap body to reduce reach. Provides agile movement via a single lever, just a flick of a wrist will operate the water flow: great if you have dirty hands!
REFRESHINGLY SUSTAINABLE:
As climate change intensifies, the need to source only the most ethical products on the market is becoming a criterion when planning a kitchen space. Managing water and energy use will continue to remain on trend next year with multi-functional taps taking centre stage in the battle to save the planet. Enjoying the idea of chilled filtered water on tap is now easier than ever, not only cutting down on the use of plastic bottles but the rise in hot water taps has made the kettle redundant – freeing up space and time while reducing water consumption and energy in high usage households.
Abode’s Swich is a revolutionary design solution that will transform a new or existing kitchen tap in to a filtered water tap that delivers a constant supply of crystal clear filtered water! The exclusive and patented Swich water filter system is a discreet yet ultra-luxe device, which is easy to use and install, either retrofit in an existing kitchen or add to a new kitchen design.

2022 HEATING TRENDS
With the short, cold days and of winter upon us we asked Steve Birch, Sales Director at Vogue (UK), for some expert heating and bathroom trends predictions for 2022 and beyond:
We are finding new appetite for heating solutions that provide homeowners with all the advantages of warmth and style without the environmental impact and so this needs to be factored in to the overall ‘design picture’ from the outset. I believe this current desire has stemmed from the abundance of sustainable materials now available, for instance, aluminium heating designs which are now being considered as an eco-luxe choice for the modern bathroom. Given its water efficiency, flexible installation and lightweight material, aluminium is a great example of a sustainable material which can be endlessly recycled as an end product = designer radiators and towel warmers!”
So what else is predicted to shake-up the heating market in 2022?
“It will be a case of ‘anything goes’ for 2022 as consumers are better educated through social media etc. of what’s available. Subsequently,
they have more confidence when selecting what they want rather than rely on the say-so of a professional, though it is critical of course that they are still guided to ensure they purchase the right heating design in terms of heat output and other technicalities.
In terms of style robust materials and finishes on the darker spectrum like anthracite and black, will be just as desirable as vintage metallics and timeless white finishes as we move through the year. Also, hidden heating solutions which are designed as singular floating bars that can also come together in a range of styles and formations, are becoming a ‘must-have’ with many.
As energy prices rocket, there is a clamor for heating solutions that are economical to run and energy effiecient, As a result of research and investment in recent years, manufacturers like Vogue offer a generous range of green heating solutions that will become a market mainstay moving forwards. Be it material or a specific eco design element, products which are environmentally compliant will lead the way this year.

LOOKING AT SMART HOME DESIGN TRENDS FOR 2022
Gira, global supplier of intelligent system solutions for the connected home and building has unveiled the latest automated systems and technologies to enhance your home in 2022 …
“The last two years have seen us all spend
more time at home and so it’s no surprise that we want to make our personal interior spaces as comfortable and versatile as possible. This is where the “connected home” has come to the fore, equipping the modern home with smart functions and devices that are specifically designed to improve daily
life and contribute to a more efficient household” says Jacob de Muijnck, Managing Director at Gira UK Ltd.
In fact, UK consumers are now very familiar with smart TVs, fitness trackers, voice-activated assistants and 24/7 access to all kinds of media, and this has
become part of everyday life as the features and benefits appeal to multiple generations.
The global health crisis has highlighted the importance of having reliable systems in order to stay in touch with the outside world, despite not always being able to venture out. Accordingly,
92 Smart Home Trends 2022
Gira discusses four key smart home trends that are set to redefine the idea of a ‘connected home’ next year and beyond:
1: The home office that thinks for itself
Fewer people leave their house to commute to work since 2020 and
the concept of working from home has become increasingly mainstream, often directed by the Government, but digital tools and services alone are not enough to maintain a high level of productivity. A home office requires a healthy, well considered environment that keeps the user focused
and motivated and so premium manufacturers are creating innovative solutions for the connected home office. Innovations include clever chairs and desks reminding you to stand up, multifunctional charging stations for mobile devices and smart lighting and blind systems that adjust room
brightness according to the time of day or work discipline under way.
2: Smart appliances for easy living
From stoves prevent anything burning to bathrooms that know remember how you like to shower– intelligent technologies make
life safer, easier and more energy-efficient. Automated vacuum cleaners, washing machines, and dryers are only the first steps towards a connected home in 2022, with indoor greenhouses becoming increasingly popular as we bring the outdoors in. More and more, smart devices
93 Smart Home Trends 2022
Gira E2
are compatible with IFTTT (“If this then that”) technology, which makes it easy to configure individual systems where products from different manufacturers need to work in sync. For example, you can switch off multiple electric appliances with just one command before stepping outside – to save energy and prevent accidental short circuits.
3: Connected Smart Home concepts are in demand
Single, standalone applications are giving
way to sustainable all-inclusive solutions as architects and builders consider the digital infrastructure and connectivity of living spaces early on in the planning phase. Lights, blinds, heating, entertainment systems, security systems, home gyms and electronics, along with smart tools and appliances, can be controlled via one central unit in connected homes adding luxury and touch of design exclusivity.
Connected living is easy to facilitate with wireless systems such
as Gira eNet SMART HOME communicate via radio transmitter – which means they can be retrofitted in both old and new buildings. Thanks to a synchronised interplay of all components, your Smart Home will do exactly what you need at any given time. Smart sensors, for example, react automatically to external factors such as ambient brightness, temperature, or humidity levels.
Jacob de Muijnck summarises, “Many digital services and
applications are already indispensable to modern lives like Alexa light control via voice command to blinds that go up automatically at sunrise. Smart technology will become even more universal in the years to come so be future-ready with a connected house (or apartment). Once you’ve installed your system, you can add all sorts of functions and devices whenever you want so your home can evolve with your lifestyle.”

2022 UK KITCHEN TRENDS
Matt Phillips, Head of UK Operations for Rotpunkt, the award-winning zero carbon manufacturer of German kitchen furniture offer our readers the benefit of his expert know-how on the latest kitchen trends to hit the UK marketplace in 2022. Here are some of the key trends that Matt feels you should look out for next year:
97 Kitchen Trends 2022
STYLE:
Calm industrial – “The iconic industrial design style is set to be reinvented next year, with a softer colour palette helping to place new emphasis on timber finishes and iconic features, which move away from the slab door to welcome modern in-frame and vertical fin design options. Calm industrial kitchen schemes will also be space sensitive, providing a wealth of open and closed furniture solutions in 2022 with canopy-style storage and wall panelling systems creating lifestylefriendly kitchen spaces that support individual needs and living habits.”
PALETTE:
Natural – “Indoor outdoor living is going to be big in 2022 and so botanical greys and greens will be met with raw timber finishes ranging from light oak to rich, dark black. Design integrity will be achieved through a well-considered balance of block colours and natural design effects, offset by matt black hardware and accessories like appliances and storage systems through to lighting and essential fixtures and fittings.”
LAYOUT:
Modular –“ Industry forecasts indicate that versatile pieces of furniture that create a more flexible home environment will top the charts in 2022, with integrated wall and ceiling storage systems through to all-inclusive islands with space to cook, dine and do business. Broken-plan, modular arrangements will be the layout of choice, able to accommodate dedicated kitchen, living and utility areas with designed-in storage to ensure minimal disruption to the ground floor. Modular furniture will add to the overall flexibility in the space, with statement furniture solutions developing around the traditional cook zone and becoming the building blocks of the contemporary kitchen.”
MANUFACTURE:
Eco friendly – “Mindful consumerism continues to be a priority for anyone seeking to make a difference and address climate change in the home. Recognising the ‘power of the purchase’ will be crucial in 2022, with big ticket items like the kitchen helping to reduce environmental impact and promote a greener way of life. In this way, the latest furniture trends are embracing all of the new design possibilities being achieved when using recycled materials and so renewable wood alternatives will prove their worth next year as an eco-friendly option that does not sacrifice on style or quality.”
Rotpunkt will be presenting a new collection of high concept kitchen designs and solutions in 2022, which are sustainably manufactured and rigorously product-tested to meet the highest eco-design standards.

The new collection features eight shades: Lava Stone; Smoked Ember; Forest Green; Green Mist; Iceberg White; Midnight Moon; Autumn Leaves and Frosted Flora, which have all been chosen in line with popular and upcoming trends. Alongside the Elements collection, Häfele UK has also introduced White Carrara, a highly popular marble effect in a satin matt finish.
AluSplash is available in three pre-cut sizes, including up to 3050mm lengths. Innovatively designed, it allows fitters to v-groove and fold around corners without joints and cut holes for sockets with ease. Häfele also offers an installation kit that can be used in conjunction with AluSplash.
Commenting on the launch of the new collection, Andrew Billingham, Product Group Manager at Häfele
UK explains: “AluSplash is a win-win product unlike any other on the market. Homeowners love the ability to create a seamless, high impact finish that’s easy to maintain, and fitters benefit from a simple install that doesn’t require specialist trades. Add in these new options that are handpicked in line with consumer demand and offer a high quality, matt finish and we expect Elements to be a very popular choice.”
The new Elements Collection is being rolled out to merchants and KBB retailers.

Brandt Kitchens, The White House, Radlett
BRINGING THE OUTSIDE IN & THE INSIDE OUT
With spring just around the corner, what better time to take a look at the rising popularity of kitchens that embrace outdoor living. We look at 2 very different projects that demonstrate this genre perfectly:
Brandt Design, has recently completed a beautiful Shakerstyle kitchen installation working to a brief to create a family living space within a large countryside home in the affluent village of Radlett, Hertfordshire.
Refined and practical, this timeless kitchen provides an ideal space to cook, dine and entertain for the entire family. Julia Steadman, Commercial Director at Brandt Design says, “Demand has been growing over the past two years for rooms that maximise the link between homes and gardens. ‘Bringing the outside in’ has therefore become increasingly important as we are socialising more at home and this has led to a greater appreciation of how being closer to nature can boost our health and mental wellbeing.”
Made-to-measure in-frame Heritage kitchen furniture was selected for this installation, which is finished in a mix of Pavilion Grey, Treron and Down Pipe hand-painted finishes by Farrow & Ball. Walnut interiors are included throughout, and the hero island unit is shown in a dark grey Down Pipe finish, with statement extractor unit, streamlined TV unit with integrated deep-fill drawers and pocket doors in dark green Treron.
The Pavilion Grey painted kitchen is both functional and spacious, maximising the scenic views of the beautifully manicured gardens, which enhance the traditional in-frame furniture arranged in a generous l-shape for easy navigation.
20mm Quartz worktops in Frosty Carrena custom made at Brandt Design’s dedicated fabrication centre provide a strong, easyto-clean, ultra-hygienic work surface to prepare and cook food and to finish, a vintage antique mirrored splashback gives depth and added perspective.
The Brandt Design team introduced a distinct corrugated design technique upon the canopy hood and central island unit. Designed to wrap around existing elements in the room, the vertical lines and ribbed texture of this unique surface solution add new areas of interest and visual texture throughout the space, elevating the look and feel in an intriguing and individual way.
Premium appliances include a heritage-style Chalonnais range cooker by LaCanche in a Graphite finish with brass trim, plus a range of Siemens built-in refrigeration, Miele Active Plus fully integrated dishwasher, and Caple under-counter wine cabinet to further enrich the working triangle. Informa Markets, the organisers of kbb Birmingham, has introduced Informa AllSecure, a series of best practice guidelines and industry standards for all event teams to adopt post Covid-19. As a result, there are 2 key differences that exhibitors and visitors will notice when attending kbb Birmingham:
• All aisles have been widened to 4m across the show floor to allow for easier density management and physical distancing, should this be recommended by local government at the time of the show.
• Physical visitor and exhibitor badges will be replaced by digital badges that can be accessed on any smart phone. All visitors will be encouraged to register online rather than registering when they arrive at the event.
Jon Johnston adds, “Our Informa AllSecure guidelines ensure enhanced health and safety standards. Whether they are exhibitors, visitors, speakers or sponsors, we want all our customers to come to kbb Birmingham to connect, learn and do business, safely and with confidence.”
The AllSecure best practice standards raise the bar on delivering safe, hygienic, productive and high-quality organised event experiences. This new standard is now being adopted by key stakeholders in the events industry worldwide and will continue to be updated as new ideas emerge. LETTING OFF STEAM!
"In conclusion, my report to the solicitor was very easy to write. Yes, the worktop was damaged. Yes, it could be ‘repaired’ by replacing it, and as the design was discontinued this would mean all the worktops in the kitchen. But the damage was likely to have begun well before 2016 and it was therefore not possible for me to confirm that it was due to the incorrect installation of the second dishwasher six years after the kitchen was put in."
It was a simple question: should the installer have fitted a steam deflector to the underside of the worktop? The briefing pack the solicitor sent to me was about a centimetre thick and after reading through it all, I could tell I was not being given the full story.
The notes I took to site explained that a dishwasher had been installed during 2016 and the postformed laminate worktop had blown five years later. The customer was not happy with the offer from the company which supplied and installed the dishwasher, which was to replace the damaged worktop, sadly, the matter had escalated from there and was now in the hands of solicitors, appointed by the customer’s legal expenses insurers. They had instructed me to carry out an assessment of the damage and the feasibility and cost of a repair.
I had found the brand name of the dishwasher, but no model number or other information that could lead me to find the product details and installation instructions. I had examined some photographs from a tradesperson who had been asked to quote for the repairs, but this showed a completely different brand of machine. I arranged my appointment in the hope that the customer might be able to fill in some of the blanks.
The dishwasher I found in the customer’s kitchen was brand new, still with its transit packing in place. It was a different brand entirely, “That’s because I had an outside tap fitted last week and the installer drilled right through the previous dishwasher and therefore has had to replace it” the customer told me.
I went through the saga with the customer to try and ensure I understood it correctly, which was the dishwasher alleged to have caused all the damage,
“So, was the 2016 dishwasher the one that came with the new kitchen?” I asked.
“Oh, no, the kitchen was fitted in 2010, but I can’t remember what the original dishwasher was and I don’t have the paperwork.” The customer replied.
I looked at the damage to the kitchen. The worktop had blown, and this was clearly due to the effects of steam over a period of time. It was obvious that there had never been a steam deflector fitted at any time. The draining board sat across the top of the dishwasher and it was close enough to the front edge of the worktop to make it too narrow for a deflector strip and too difficult to seal the space above the dishwasher. In truth, it wouldn’t have been difficult at all, but it would have required a panel underneath the full width and depth of the dishwasher and this was clearly not something the installer knew to do or wished to do. The worktop had therefore had six years of steam ingress even before the ‘faulty’ machine was installed. The customer told me she had been unable to trace the original installer who supplied and fitted the kitchen.
In conclusion, my report to the solicitor was very easy to write. Yes, the worktop was damaged. Yes, it could be ‘repaired’ by replacing it, and as the design was discontinued this would mean all the worktops in the kitchen. But the damage was likely to have begun well before 2016 and it was therefore not possible for me to confirm that it was due to the incorrect installation of the second dishwasher six years after the kitchen was put in.

was fitted in 2016. This was replaced early in 2021, but the new installer had still not fitted a steam deflector as the customer did not want to prejudice a potential Court claim. Then the accident the previous week had resulted in the third appliance being fitted just the day before I turned up.

The app includes assembly instructions and assembly videos for all Blum products, arranged by product group, and these can be saved into a favourites tab to make it even more simple to find each time it is needed.
Up-to-date assembly and installation instructions are found at your fingertips. This saves time and ensures that furniture is assembled to the highest standard. The interactive applications clearly indicate the right drilling positions and show you how to adjust Blum fittings. There are also assembly videos, taking you through the process step-by-step.
Easy Assembly is supported by the Blum Live Support App, where customers can speak directly to the technical support team via a live chat, sending videos and photos of the individual situation completely free of charge as part of Blum’s commitment and dedication to services for its customers.
“When talking with installers we’ve found that there is nothing quite like having all the answers to your installation questions right in your pocket. Whether you prefer instructions, interactive content, or videos, the app delivers the solution you like best, and when you need it.” Commented Matthew Glanfield, Technical Manager, Blum. www.blum.com
