A new year and decade is upon us and I’m delighted that we kick off with on a positive foot.
Membership growth continues, despite challenging times for our industry and we launched our Protected initiative with signifies a new dawn for UK installations. I’m encouraged by initial uptake as we partner with several retail brands, including a test of the initiative with our longstanding partners at B&Q in a number of their stores.
I was pleased to accept an invitation to attend the North American trade show KBIS by our new friends at The National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA). The purpose of the trip was to better understand the global skills gap crisis and to share learnings on how we’re managing the challenge on both sides of the Atlantic. What is clear is that we face the same challenge – there are simply not enough installers to fulfill growth ambitions for our respective industries and unless we address this, we are set for failure.

INTRODUCING ASHCROFT KITCHEN INSTALLATIONS LTD - WORTHY WINNERS OF 'THE
INSTALLER OF
At the prestigious ek&bbusiness Awards & Review 2019, held recently in London, Ashcroft Kitchen Installations Ltd scooped the much sought-after ‘Installer of the Year’ award.
Owned by BiKBBI member Billy Ashcroft, the company fought off many other deserving potential winners to scoop the now coveted award. The Installer Magazine spoke to Billy to discover how his business has risen to such prominence:
Many congratulations Billy, what does winning this award mean to you?
It means a great deal to me and my family. I am over the moon that my work has been given this recognition.
How do you think you can use the title to your best advantage?
I think the Award will help me stand out from the crowd and give any prospective customers greater confidence in me.
What advice do you have for anyone else being nominated?
Just enjoy the experience and learn from it. It is a recognition in itself to be nominated. I was nominated and shortlisted in 2018, never won, but came back as winner in 2019.
So, going right back to the beginning, what got you into fitting kitchens?
It was more by chance than anything. I was asked to labour for a kitchen installer and after a load of boxes became a kitchen, I knew there and then that was what I wanted to do.
And how long have you been installing?
Since 1994, so coming up 26 years, based in Cumbria since
THE YEAR AWARD 2019'
2010. I am an all-in-one kitchen fitting tradesman, carrying out all aspects including plumbing, gas and electrics myself. I do have a part-time assistant who comes along with me for the first 2 or 3 days of a fit to assist with ripping out, building furniture and lifting of the worktops.
What’s has been your biggest challenge whilst growing your business?
Not being academic, however I went on to achieve Corgi, now Gas Safe status and my Part P Electrical qualifications.
Do you have any retail contracts?
Yes, I currently install kitchens on behalf of Wickes. I have previously fitted for B&Q and MFI.
Why do you work with retailers?
There is a guarantee of regular work and the systems the large retailers use suit me.
What do you want from a retail contract?
Steady work and efficiency but it is also nice to feel part of a larger team.
What’s the secret of growing a successful business?
Hard work, punctuality, communication and a desire to succeed.
How has BiKBBI helped your journey?
The BiKBBI is a key to opening doors to new opportunities. Being a member of the BiKBBI enables you to stand out with a professional status as an Accredited Installer. Also, without being a member of the BiKBBI I would never have had the opportunity to receive this award or recognition in any way.
4 Installer Profile
What are your opinions of the BiKBBI?
The BiKBBI team are 100% committed as spokespeople for installers within the industry. They are rooting for the people at the bottom of the supply chain and ensuring that good installers are recognised for the work they do but also ensuring that the customer can access good quality installers.
Can you foresee a time when you will be utilising the BiKBBI led apprenticeship scheme?
I wouldn't rule out taking on an apprentice in the future, so if that moment arises, I would certainly look into the BiKBBI led scheme. In the past, I have employed and trained 3 individuals who then progressed to become installers in their own right.
If you can offer one piece of advice for an apprentice, what will it be?
Don't expect to learn it all in one go, there is a lot to fitting a kitchen project aside from putting the cupboards on the wall, i.e. gas, electrics, plumbing, plastering and tiling. And to
5 Installer Profile
pursue kitchen fitting as a trade, quality comes with experience.
And if you had one piece of advice for an existing installer wanting to grow his business, what would it be?
Commitment, hard work, punctuality, communication and going above and beyond for customers.
What’s the future for your business?
Expanding with a 2nd installer/ team has been a consideration. There is certainly still a possibility of this happening at some point. Other than that I shall continue to strive to work to my own high expectations.
On a more personal note, do you have a family?
Yes, my wife Alison and 2 children, aged 15 and 7. Alison works for the company carrying out all of the administration and bookkeeping.
What do you like to do for leisure?
When not at work, I like to spend time with my family.
What would be a perfect weekend for you?
Walking around NASA Kennedy Space Center indulging in space and moon memorabilia.
Where is your favourite holiday destination?
Florida.
Favourite sport/team?
Everton FC. I have supported them since my Dad took me to a home match when I was a kid.
Finally, hopes and aspirations for the future both in your business and personal life?
As I am 52, my hopes and aspirations for both the business and personal life are to remain fit, well and healthy to continue to provide a stable home for my family and to continue creating customers' ‘Little Hollywood’, i.e. their dream kitchen. This is a term I often use when discussing a new kitchen with the customer, "Creating your Little Hollywood".

BiKBBI CALLS FOR RETAILERS TO
‘GET ON THE BUS!’
The British Institute of Kitchen, Bedroom & Bathroom Installation (BiKBBI) is once again partnering with KBB, the premier industry trade show held between 1st and 4th March 2020 at the NEC Birmingham, and is calling upon independent retailers to ‘Get on the Bus’!
Offering something a little different to a traditional exhibition stand, the institute plans to drive a bright red London Routemaster bus into the exhibition hall, where they will host a series of themed events from through out the
show. The iconic British double-decker, has been kindly sponsored by Victoria Plum Trade.
The BiKBBI’s attendance will include a series of events aimed at its publics, including live social media broadcasting, press awareness sessions and an open invite to independent retailers to find out more about the new Protected initiative and partnership with the institute.
Communications Manager Nicole Mercer commented,
“We cannot wait to attend the event in March and we’re expecting to share some exciting news as part of the event. Our live broadcasting was a huge success at the 2018 exhibition, with over 1.8m views internationally. We’re also using the opportunity to connect with retailers and share details of the Protected initiative.”
Nicole added, “It’s time to get on the bus and we look forward to welcoming you aboard, and we’d also like to thank Victoria Plum Trade for their support… ding ding.”
WHY INSTALLERS SHOULD VISIT
THE UPCOMING KBB SHOW
It’s hard to believe that the KBB exhibition is upon us again! Come the first week in March, I, along with the BiKBBI team, will be pitching up at the NEC again to meet our members, sponsors, partners and other industry friends.
For any of you who are sceptical about visiting, then maybe you should view it as a market place where you have a unique opportunity to witness the industry at its best. Where you can get ideas and discover what’s new and better still, bump into friends and share a pint or a coffee and a quick catch up -and meet the BiKBBI team of course!
You will see from the advertisement on the facing page that the BiKBBI is doing something unusual this year by using a London Routemaster bus as part of its exhibition stand, it will be impossible to ignore and fun to visit.
The show was initially regarded as one that was more useful for KBB retailers but this has changed in recent years a growing number of installers are attending so why not put a day aside and enjoy socialising whilst seeing what’s new. The BiKKBI bus can be found on stand Y110.

KBIS USA REVEALS SKILL SHORTAGE SIMILAR TO UK
BiKBBI CEO, Damian Walters, was invited to attend The Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (KBIS) as a guest of the North American Trade Association, The National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) in January.
KBIS, which was held at The Las Vegas Convention Centre, is North America's largest trade show dedicated to all aspects of kitchen and bath design. This extensive exhibition showcased the freshest designs from over 600 leading brands, it is a one-stop shop providing attendees and exhibitors the ultimate destination to network, exchange ideas and build their businesses.
The, event, which welcomed a staggering 30,000+ visitors, attracts an international delegate and was preceded by a visit from the Americans to Cheshire last year to discuss their Global Connect programme.
The purpose of the BiKBBI’s attendance was to better understand the global skills gap crisis and how the Americans are tackling the subject. Speaking at the event, Damian Walters said, “It’s clear that the global skills shortage is reaching critical levels. For all the many challenges the American industry faces, the ‘critical and well documented’ one is that of a skills shortage, and this topic certainly played centre stage on their agenda for the show.

BiKBBI News
Damian continued, “I was surprised at how much emphasis there was on the skills shortage over there. But what surprised me most, was that there was a clear plan on how to tackle the problem and an acceptance from the entire industry that the situation exists and indeed needs addressing. The UK needs to pay close attention to how this state of affairs is being handled by the Americans if we’ve any chance to deal with our own problem”.
The NKBA have created a ‘Next Up’ initiative which aims to address the skills shortage across the industry. KBIS welcomed over 300 students from across the United States to introduce them to the best of the industry, to include manufacture, design and installation, which plays just part of their strategy to attract the next generation of school leavers to the industry.
Speaking at their State of the Association talk at KBIS, NKBA CEO Bill Darcy Jr. said that the Association would focus on a three prong strategy that would in the first instance provide high-school students with a handson exposure to design and construction. Secondly, they aim to change the dialogue about the various pathways into a lucrative career within the industry and thirdly, they aim to connect interest to action.

Secondly, they aim to change the dialogue about the various pathways into a lucrative career within the industry and thirdly, they aim to connect interest to action.
At the centre of the programme they aim to introduce is ‘Career Test Drives’, an initiative that brings the industry to high-school students, introducing them to all aspects of the industry from design to installation. The NKBA bring the industry to school gymnasiums, like a mini-exhibition, where students get actual hands on experience designing and installing product.
“This is a real proactive initiative that takes the industry to the schools. The industry unites and is tacking this challenge head on. The BiKBBI has created a new, but special bond with the NKBA which will collaboratively approach the skills shortage on both sides of the pond” said Walters.
Despite being thousands of miles from home, The British were well represented at KBIS in Nevada with many representatives from the UK attending the show including BiKBBI members Liberty Fitting Services attending as well as BiKBBI Sponsors Classic Marble and Compusoft (pictured).
KBIS is back next year, in Florida – to find out more, please visit

300 students get to tour the KBIS show floor with the #NKBANextUp program. They’ll get the chance to meet industry leaders, ask questions, and learn about exciting design and construction career options in kitchen and bath. Careers aren’t “one size fits all” so why do we have to treat them that way?

GIVING CONTROL BACK TO THE CUSTOMER
Installing a hydronic plinth heater is a great choice for home owners when either replacing kitchen radiators or planning a new kitchen. Plinth heaters can not only save space, they are much cheaper to install when compared to under floor heating.
Although plinth heaters are proven to be one of the best choices in heating a kitchen compared to traditional radiators or underfloor heating, in the past they have lacked controllability. Control was by means of a simple rocker switch to turn the heater on or off manually and so when a radiator was replaced with a plinth heater, end-users lost control as they no longer had the benefits of a simple thermostatic radiator valve with radiators which would maintain the kitchen temperature.
Until now, consumers who are energy conscious only had one option which was to turn the plinth heater off manually to avoid over heating their kitchen during cooking periods. It could also leave the them facing a cold kitchen in the morning if they forgot to turn the heater back on again. Some may have overcome this dilemma by installing a hardwired thermostat to control their plinth heaters but then this would result in increased installation costs.
British heating manufacturer, Thermix has found a solution to overcome the conundrum of plinth heater controllability,
and is able to give its customers a level of control as comparable to a radiator. The company has introduced its hydronic plinth heater which is controlled by a wireless thermostat which regulates room temperature. Its wireless models not only provide temperature control in the kitchen but also the end-user needn’t worry about wasting energy.
The Thermix wireless plinth heater is also available with a programmable thermostat, providing a 7-day timing facility. This allows the user to set the timing as well as the temperature. Each model is available with four different heat outputs ranging from 1.5kW to 2.4 kW. Also offered, is a choice of front grilles, including the popular brushed stainless steel version, and a range of powder coated options in white, silver or black. For customers who want to colourmatch their plinth, provided, is a self-colour grille ready to paint.
Customers also choose from a simple wireless thermostat to a smart phone controlled thermostat. For larger kitchens multiple wireless plinth heaters can be controlled by a single thermostat.
With the help of their low water content, plinth heaters provide faster heat response and leave much less residual heat when the heater turns off. This feature not only provides comfort heating to the user but also saves energy by not heating the room when it’s not needed.

BUSHBOARD CHOSEN FOR BBC’S
'YOUR HOME MADE PERFECT AGAIN'
Your Home Made Perfect is the first ever British virtual reality and visual effects property show.
Presented by Angela Scanlon, the ground-breaking property and makeover series sees innovative architects, Laura Jane Clark and Robert Jamison, transform ordinary homes into extraordinary ones. The results are presented to the homeowners using virtual reality headsets, giving them a real life look at how the changes will work.
The show, broadcast in the autumn featured homeowners Ruth and Lindsey, looking to make improvements to their existing
home and kitchen. After seeing virtual presentations of how the two architects would change the home, the couple chose Laura’s plan which featured Bushboard Evolve solid-core laminate worksurface in the Caldeira décor for the striking new kitchen surfaces and complementing coffee tables.”
“The architect’s design for the interior was crisp, clean and uncluttered – open shelving and the delightful handle-less design of the kitchen means it looks fresh but timeless.” commented interior designer, Sian Astley, who is the build project manager for the show. “The Caldeira décor of
Bushboard Evolve brings warmth and modernity and it is so easy to work with.”
Homeowner Ruth Thomas said “The whole project was an amazing experience. When it came to the kitchen, we had not heard of Evolve, but we are delighted with the slim lines and striking colour of Evolve. The worktop is the hardest working part of the kitchen, so we wanted something that will endure.”
Caroline Elliott, Head of Product for Worktops at Wilsonart UK, the group to which Bushboard belongs, explained, “The Your Home Made Perfect scheme
for Ruth and Lindsay’s home is a lovely example of Evolve’s versatility, especially with the integrated drainer grooves and undermount sink, which are so important for completing the seamless, modern look they’ve chosen. The bespoke coffee tables are such a creative use of the offcuts and a great transitional touch between the kitchen and living areas.”

USING 3D TO SELL A BATHROOM IN MINUTES
Customers often want to know what their new bathroom is going to look like, especially when they are spending a lot of money. A 3D image of what it will look like gives them that reassurance and is a lot easier to create than many realise.
Innoplus was originally designed for bathroom installers to use, as it makes designing simple to do. Short-cuts, such as using room templates and dragging and dropping furniture into place make creating the room much easier than most design software. You can even tile an entire room in seconds by dropping in a tile into the room design.
One of the many benefits of using software for planning a bathroom is that it saves a lot of time when customers change their minds.
Changing tile designs, the type of taps used and anything else can be done in a few clicks and once seen in a design will reduce the amount of changes and uncertainty a customer has.
Plans and elevations are also produced while you design, so once the design is agreed the tiling plans and everything you need to install are ready to be printed. All of these can save a huge amount of time and when time is money, it can be a big benefit to a small business.

ROMAN’S SHOWERING PRODUCTS FEATURED IN GRAND DESIGNS PROJECT
Roman, the long established British manufacturer of shower enclosures, screens, wetrooms and trays, was recently involved in a unique Grand Designs project which was aired on Channel 4. Homeowners, Paul and Amy Wilkinson, chose an unusual structure for their grand design project in five circular timber buildings linked by walkways.
Roman specified products to create bespoke and complement solutions for five en-suite bathrooms that fulfilled the customer’s modern and contemporary brief. These included: Roman’s Liberty black grid wetroom panels, Decem hinged door and side panel and Lumin8 quadrants and trays.
David Osborne, Managing Director of Roman commented: “It was a privilege to be involved in such a remarkable development whereby we achieved the luxury end result that had envisaged for such a long time.”
The distinctive design of the development significantly reflected the choice of furniture. Paul and Amy Wilkinson decided to keep the ‘circular’ theme through the whole of the property from the living area to the kitchen right through to the bathrooms. Roman specified a selection of shower designs and one shower style in particular fitted the project perfectly, the Lumin8 quadrants and trays, which characterise an

2020: THE YEAR WE MUST ALL DELIVER FOR INSTALLERS!
The skills shortage in the industry has cemented itself back onto the mainstream news agenda, thanks to a flurry of trade research revealing some stark findings, and the promise of investment in construction training from the Conservatives ahead of the recent General Election.
According to the Federation of Master Builders, 56% of SMEs faced significant difficulty in hiring carpenters and joiners in quarter three of 2019, overtaking bricklayers (54% ) as the trade that is the hardest to recruit for . Add to this recent research from BiKBBI,

Natalie Davenport, Head Of Marketing, Häfele UK
Natalie Davenport, Head of Marketing for Häfele UK explains the necessity for KBB manufacturers and distributors to invest in installers over the coming year and beyond:
We’ve invested in a number of products, resources and services to help tradespeople and fitters streamline installations."
which revealed that the skills shortage is one of the main reasons behind a perception of unprofessionalism in the industry , and we have a vicious cycle ensuing.
Overturning these issues is a collective venture, something all businesses in the supply chain play a role in. But the industry also needs support from local and national authorities, so it’s promising to see the government is making plans to launch a new National Skills Fund worth £3bn .
But there is also a huge onus industry side, not only to attract more people into the sector, but to do what we can to help existing installers showcase their talent by providing the products and services needed to create great looking, highly functional kitchens and bathrooms alongside the highest levels of customer care.
In 2019, Häfele spent time analysing these challenges for the KBB industry in depth and considered what we could do to address them. As such, we’ve invested in a number of products, resources and services to help tradespeople and fitters streamline installations, bridge the skills gap and envision a lucrative future based on positive customer feedback.
One such example is AluSplash, a highlystylish yet practical alternative to glass, acrylic and tiled splashbacks, distributed exclusively through Häfele in the UK.
AluSplash is simple and straightforward to fit, thanks to a cleverly designed flame resistant aluminium surface with a fire-resistant mineral core, that means it can be v-grooved and folded around corners without joints, as well as cut for sockets with ease. Its seamless design means it’s easy for customers to keep clean and maintain, and comes in a range of colours and finishes, tying into popular kitchen trends as well as user demand for hygienic fixtures and fittings.
It can be installed with readily available tools and without specialist experience, making it an easy extra profit stream for all trades, while also providing a costeffective, stylish décor option to the customer who, ultimately, gets to enjoy a fantastic looking kitchen.
However, simply offering groundbreaking products isn’t enough. Manufacturers and suppliers should look at what they can do to streamline an installer’s day-to-day role, so they can focus more time on building their business and sourcing new talent. Häfele to Order was launched for this very reason.

For those working on either higher volume projects or in spaces that require cut-tomeasure components, Häfele to Order offers a bespoke service which allows installers to specify products to exact size, quantity and finish. Any product, whether rails, panels, plinths, LED furniture lighting and more can be cut, packaged and delivered to exact requirements, meaning an installer must only purchase exactly what they need. This minimises the waste of unused product and time spent cutting to a space’s precise measurements – savings that can be passed on to the end user, resulting in happier customers who are more likely to make recommendations.
We’re also working to make it easier for tradespeople to source training, something which we know is in demand. For example, our Häfele Training Academy, based next door to our head office in Rugby, delivers face-to-face courses and workshops for installers to teach new skills, improve best practice and make sure they’re up to date with the latest knowledge and product innovations. Additionally, we’re working on launching several e-learning modules covering topics such as how to install
Our plans for 2020 are to refine and improve our training programme so we can reach as many tradespeople as possible, so we can play an integral role in helping them maintain high levels of customer satisfaction and maximise the growth of the KBB market.
Our aim is to deliver a solution-based package of products and services, which drive professional installations, streamline operations and teach best practices. This will not only serve to increase recommendations of high quality handywork amongst communities, but it will also drive more young people towards the sector, positioning it as somewhere they can be proud to work.
We hope 2020 will be the year we see manufacturers, distributors, trade bodies and government alike, collaborate to improve the resources and options available to installers and tradespeople, so they can look forward to a future where they are recognised for their talent.

FRANKE’S EASYTO-INSTALL ELECTRONIC INSTANT BOILING WATER TAPS OFFER EXTRA FUNCTIONALITY
Instant Boiling Water Taps continue to grow in demand due to the fact that they offer environmental benefits and convenience, consuming less energy in comparison to kettles and allow the consumer to undertake a multitude of tasks in the kitchen such as food preparation, blanching, getting things on the boil quickly or sterilising items instantly.
While standard mechanical models are a highly popular choice, there is growing interest in electronic options like Franke’s Minerva Electronic 4-in-1 Instant Boiling Water Tap range, which offers additional functionality and user-friendliness at a comparable price, while being just as straightforward to install and maintain.
With just a simple touch of a button the Minerva Electronic 4-in-1 taps provides access to filtered 100°C boiling and filtered cold water. They feature pre-set, touchcontrol 30 and 60 second programmes that automatically dispense either the filtered cold or filtered boiling water, perfect for filling jugs, pans or cafetières without the need to stand over the tap. The 4-in-1 design also enables access to standard mains hot and cold water from a separate lever. When not in use, the taps remain in standby mode and are safe and easy to operate.

taps are very straightforward to install, which means installers can confidently and quickly move onto their next job."
KBB installers will appreciate that Franke’s Minerva Electronic 4-in-1 taps can be easily installed in as little as 20 minutes, thanks to the innovative M-Box. Comprising of one compact box containing Franke Pro M filter, inlet combination, mixing valve set, gasket set and control box, the M-Box has the flexibility to be fitted horizontally or vertically depending on cupboard space and only requires two drill holes.
The tap hoses are different sizes and colour coded, fitting into matching holes in the box for a fool-proof job with few tools needed. What’s more, the box does not have to compete for cupboard space with the boiling water tank, as Minerva tanks fit neatly behind a standard 150mm plinth.
The integral Pro M filter is very easy for the consumer to access and change, therefore reducing the need for installers to make a return visit. It is however advisable that consumers carry out a simple MOT of their tap every six months, just as they would any other household appliances, to avoid any after sales interventions.
In terms of maintenance, four simple tasks will ensure their tap continues to run at peak performance. Changing the filter every six months will prevent limescale build-up in the boiler, while also improving water taste. It’s also advisable to freshen
up the filter cartridge’s plastic housing by giving it a wash inside and out with warm soapy water to keep it clean and bacteria-free.
To avoid limescale building up in the tap’s aerator, it should be soaked in a citric-acid-based descaling cleaner for 10 minutes to remove limescale deposits. Finally, to keep the tap’s finish looking as good as new, simply wipe it down with a mild detergent and microfibre cloth before rinsing with water and drying it off to prevent limescale residue.
Jeanette Ward, communications manager at Franke, says: “The boiling water tap market is increasing but two defining factors in getting them into more homes are the ease of installation and their ongoing maintenance once in situ, because installers will naturally favour a product that’s straightforward to install and doesn’t generate after sales interventions.
“Minerva Electronic 4-in-1 taps are very straightforward to install, which means installers can confidently and quickly move onto their next job. By highlighting to consumers the simple maintenance steps that should be done every six months, installers could save themselves a return trip to the household.”

BATHROOM WALL PANELLING – ALLAYING THE MYTHS
With the rising popularity in using panelling for bathroom feature walls instead of traditional tiling, the Installer Magazine spoke to Showerwall’s Product Manager, Steph Harris to allay any potential myths and answer installers frequently asked questions.
Firstly we asked Steph why she felt this product area was proving so popular with installers?
Bathroom panelling gives installers fast and easy installation, low maintenance and large choice of styles that offer design flexibility, Showerwall’s large format bathroom wall panels offer an excellent alternative to traditional tiles and with no grouting required, they can be installed with less hassle and can be fitted within a day. The panels provide a large watertight and hard-wearing surface with near invisible joints, ideal for shower enclosures, bathroom feature walls and panelling around baths.
Is Showerwall waterproof?
Steph Harris, Showerwall’s Product Manager
Showerwall HPL bathroom wall panels have a moisture resistant core and are bonded to high pressure laminate. When they are installed following the fitting instructions and with the recommended adhesive, sealants and fixing trims, this will guarantee a waterproof panelling system. Showerwall panels within the Acrylic and Customs collections are manufactured from a 4mm solid Acrylic sheet and are 100% waterproof.
Can I apply Showerwall directly to tiles?
Yes, it’s fine to fit Showerwall panels over the top of tiles. The wall must be sound and plumb, and you must ensure there are no loose tiles and that the tiles have been completely degreased. Please note that when installing over tiles, it’s advised you adhere the panels to the wall with silicone.
Can I apply Showerwall to plasterboard?
Yes, Showerwall can also be applied to plasterboard but you’ll need to ensure the wall is level first. If it’s not level, you’ll need to apply it to a batten system and not directly to the surface of the wall. For fixing Showerwall to battens, please refer to the full installation instructions.
Do I need adhesive and sealant and which type do I use?
Yes, adhesive and sealant is required to install Showerwall panels and we have developed products specifically for this purpose. If you choose to use alternative products your guarantee may be invalidated.
Can I hang wall mounted items or grab rails to Showerwall panels?
Yes, but you should always use additional battens behind hand basins, towel rails, and other heavy items such as furniture. Make sure you apply adequate sealant to all fixings.
Will watermarks show on Showerwall panels?
Showerwall panels require minimal upkeep and can simply be wiped clean with a cloth. The panels are available in many decors and textures but if you choose decors with a gloss finish, the watermarks will show no more than you would expect on a tiled surface.
Can I sit the Showerwall panel directly onto a shower tray or bath edge?
No. We recommend that you use the Sureseal two-part system for shower trays and baths which comprises of a PVC strip and a high-performance white silicone. If you decide not to use Sureseal, a 3mm expansion gap should always be left between the panel and the tray or bath and then sealed.
Can I use a Showerwall panel as a bath panel in order to match the rest of the room?
Yes, providing you choose a décor pattern that is adaptable. The bath needs to be installed and panelled first and the Showerwall panels will need to be fit as per the fitting instructions.
How should I store the Showerwall panels?
Always store the panels flat, to avoid bowing and don’t store the panels outside or in wet or humid conditions. It’s important not to stand panels on their edge, as this can also cause bowing.
Should I let the panels acclimatise before installation?

AN ‘INTELLIGENT’ AND ‘SMART’ APPROACH TO LIGHTING CONTROL
Hamilton launches CPD on lighting control to help installers capitalise on valuable new biz opportunities
Hamilton Litestat has launched a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) training programme entitled: An ‘Intelligent’ and ‘Smart’ approach to lighting control. Accredited by ‘The CPD Certification Service’ and the British Institute of Interior Design (BiiD), its aim is to educate about new technologies and help trainees and qualified electrical wholesalers/installers up-skill in the area of smart lighting control.
With technology moving at such a fast pace, CPD training helps to ensure that academic and practical qualifications do not become obsolete. Hamilton’s CPD focused on smart lighting control is designed to encourage proactive learning as well as help identify and capitalise on valuable new business opportunities within the growing smart control sector.
The CPD provides an overview and history of the lighting control sector; an appreciation of where it can be used; an introduction to smart lighting control and the different protocols currently on offer; the integration of other

smart control applications such as blind control, and an introduction to smart audio control.
“During its 50 years, Hamilton has played a leading and forward-thinking role in the development of lighting control technologies – from the simple switch through to intelligent dimming and today’s smart controls. The company is wellplaced to provide CPD training to both qualified and trainee installers,” says Gavin Williams, Hamilton’s Head of Marketing. “The CPD provides details on the latest lighting technology to suit the residential, hotel, commercial and retail sectors, as well as exploring wireless smart audio control solutions too, which are increasing rapidly in popularity.”
The programme, which takes one hour plus questions, is delivered by Hamilton’s knowledgeable staff and can be undertaken at the company’s Bristol headquarters or London showroom, or at the branch by appointment. To book this accredited CPD module, contact Ali Osmond on t: 01747 860088 or e: cpd@hamilton-litestat. com
The CPD training programme is part of Hamilton’s on-going commitment and investment in training, supporting installers to upskill and keep abreast of the latest smart control technological developments, as well as helping those undergoing their initial training in order to help bridge the industry’s current skills gap. The family-run British business
recently became a member of CEDIA and is now an approved Continuing Education Unit (CEU) Provider. Its training courses held at its Mere facilities contribute four CEUs towards the 30 CEUs CEDIA-certified professionals need within three years.

DAVAL LAUNCHES NEW CUBAN OAK
Daval, a British designer and manufacturer of quality fitted furniture including kitchens, bedrooms, bathroom and living has launched Cuban Oak, a wood grain as part of its artisan Varenna Collection.
Simon Bodsworth, Managing Director of Daval Furniture says, “More than ever, those living in urban areas are adopting a greener style of living and are far more sustainably aware.”
By crafting only made-to-measure furniture solutions, Daval can alter the width, depth, height and back slope dimension of its range of fitted furniture to ensure you don’t have to compromise on design or storage capacity. i-lite, an exclusive lightweight panel solution by Daval, makes it possible for large bi-folding units to be securely fitted in a low, mid or high level setting, so you can enjoy absolute concealment in your living room with for example, a bespoke TV & Media unit, matching end tables, integrated bench seating and tailor-made storage solutions: inside and out.
Launched on 1st January 2020, the new Cuban Oak wood grain finish (shown here as a contemporary living room concept featuring the mellow and smooth Varenna Furniture Collection) captures the beauty of urban-style décor, but with a feel of natural wood however, being a laminate solution it is not restricted by weight or limited by the permeable qualities of genuine timber. By choosing a wood effect finish over raw state, it is possible to adopt, ethically, virtually any colour, texture or finish whilst keeping costs to a minimum.
Built from sustainable materials and precision engineered in the UK, every furniture collection by Daval is made-tomeasure and made to order. The Varenna Furniture Collection offers:
• i-lite: a 38mm lightweight panel solution used to emphasise panelling and framing for a contemporary design statement. Accommodating awkward spaces, this solution allows for large bi-folding units to be securely fitted in a low, mid or high level setting
• Colour matched cabinets: this feature avoids additional cladding on the end panels for a highly luxurious finish

2020 BATHROOM TRENDS
As we head into what is not just a new year, but a new decade, we thought it would be a good time to get a handle on what the upcoming bathroom heating trends might be, so we spoke to the Steve Birch who is the Sales Director of British radiator and towel warmer manufacturer, Vogue UK, who gave us his thoughts:
SPECIAL-ORDER DESIGN
Tailor-made heating designs have become somewhat surprisingly, within our budgets and is therefore set to grow in the coming years.
Many consumers like to express their individuality and manufacturers, like Vogue UK can now bring their vision to life and factor in everything from colour and finish, to electrical connections and even, countryspecific design requirements.
BINARY STYLE
Showing the same level of attention to your home accessories will be essential and feature radiators and towel warmers are a necessary bathroom component
that are now considered central to a design and interior scheme. Look out for simple and elegant shaped heating solutions which are elevated by distinguishing design features and details, as these are set to dominate the home in 2020 and beyond”
TONE AND TEXTURE
Cutting-edge heating design continues to inspire new variations in texture, colour and finish, and this will again play a huge part in home interiors next year. Heating solutions are a great way to introduce colour and tone as well as depict the latest trend for inspirational tone and texture and innovative surface treatments and hand-finishing techniques are paving the way for special finish options never before seen on a radiator or towel warmer. 2020 will reveal a new level of tactility in the bathroom and a sensory heating solution that delivers on both form and function is the answer.”
COLOUR
The bathroom market continues to favour black coloured interior solutions and this shows no signs of

abating as we move into 2020. Trends predict the monochromatic shades of white, grey and black will continue to top the charts and undergo constant reinvention, thanks to new and special finishes being introduced just like Sparkle or Crackle by Vogue (UK). You can also get the best of both worlds with metallics in 2020 by embracing both warm and cool metals - independently and in combination –alongside colour matched heating controls, valves, brackets and fixtures. Antique Bronze, Polished Gold and exclusives like The Vogue Rose Gold finish will continue to influence heating colour palettes. This, alongside matt and satin lacquered finishes are going to help define the towel warmer and radiator in 2020, creating a showpiece in the room that can compete with the latest, interior décors. www.vogueuk.co.uk e: info@vogueuk.co.uk | t: 01902 387 000

JAMES GARRISON, HEAD OF TRADE
We’re very proud to become a Corporate Sponsor of BiKBBI and be part of the great work they do through Education, Standards and Support.
At VictoriaPlum.com, we strive to give Best in Sector customer service through our dedicated Trade Account Management Team, supporting our industry through providing over 6,000 products and advice while making sure that the installers we work with, feel supported and valued, which is reflected in our TrustPilot score.
I am really looking forward to working closely with BiKBBI and its members in the coming months and years.
WORKTOP INSTALLATIONS –HOW TO AVOID ERRORS AND SOLVE PROBLEMS
We often hear of complaints from installers regarding worksurfaces and so we thought the beginning of a new year was a good time to remind ourselves of how to problem solve.
We therefore spoke to BiKBBI sponsor, Sheridan, as its team has an intimate understanding of the common causes of, and solutions to customer complaints relating to worktop installations. In this short article, we will explore some of the leading common concerns and how to prevent them.
VEINED WORKTOPS
There has been six weeks of planning and anticipation, and finally the worktops have been installed, the kitchen is finished, right?
Veining is one of the most sought after traits in premium worktops. Originally an exclusive feature of natural stone; modern manufacturing techniques have brought veined surfaces to Quartz and Solid Surface lines from all major manufacturers.
From a buyer’s perspective, veined styles can fire up vivid imaginations of elegant lines coursing throughout their new kitchen design. Such bold expectations however are usually beyond what can be reasonably expected from even an impeccably executed installation.
The key to preventing such disappointments is to ensure that sales representatives are diligent and thorough in their explanation of materials. Crucially, customers should understand the appearance of full slabs. This will help to highlight the density, length, width and consistency of veins, to realistically set expectations.
WORKTOP JOINTS
Worktop joints are often unavoidable, particularly in larger installations. Yes, your sales reps may advise customers that a joint will be necessary, but does the customer know what this will look like? Will your customer be aware, for example, that their join may also have an acute 90 degree change in direction in their very linear worktop design?
Aside from the usual appearance of joints, a common cause for escalated complaints is when more joints become necessary after the template stage. Such reasons could be either insufficient planning, or simply because it would be impossible or risky to manoeuvre larger pieces into place. It’s important to discuss potential eventualities to avoid disappointment if things don’t go exactly to plan.

POST INSTALLATION EXPECTATIONS
There has been six weeks of planning and anticipation, and finally the worktops have been installed, the kitchen is finished, right? Well this could depend on what exactly their installation included. One of the leading concerns we hear is that upstands have gaps behind them, which can often occur when walls are uneven - especially in extended runs over two metres.
It is crucial to advise the role of tiling or filling by a decorator may be the final step to completion, even if these services aren’t offered by yourselves. This will avoid unrealistic assumptions; and help your customers to better coordinate their entire refit.

PLUG + LIGHT
Gira’s Plug + Light range makes indoor lighting control incredibly smart and very simple.
Plug + Light is a defined interface which unites light control and power supply. Combined with appropriate light top units, Plug + Light offers easily controllable indoor lighting – from dimming to warm dim. The open system can be used in the most common flush-mounted device boxes, also in British Standard, and besides the controller, it reconfigures the handling of the associated light top units
The installation of a Plug + Light lamp is designed to be incredibly simple as the lamps are docked to the light socket outlet via a convenient and powerful magnet. Once inserted into the Plug + Light socket outlet, each lamp can freely rotate 360° and even be replaced during operation.
Providing even more design options, the Plug + Light socket outlet can also be designed in the style of Gira E2, Gira Esprit and Gira Studio, giving end-users a greater choice and design freedom.
Mark Booth, Managing Director, Gira UK comments “Both our Gira Studio Design Line and Plug + Light series allow smart technology to be more easily accessible to the end user. We achieve this through leading edge design and applied methodology that is designed to enrich lifestyles and contemporary built environments.“ He continued, Plug + Light is able to support more than 300 functions so flexible indoor lighting and blind control for example, can come to life for the end customer with ease: as well as provide an infallible solution for installers.”

ROTPUNKT GOES CARBON NEUTRAL FOR 2020 AND BEYOND!
Despite endless comment in the news about Brexit towards the end of 2019, one other story genuinely made headlinesglobal warming.
Extreme weather patterns creating havoc around the world, most recently with Bush fires in Australia. Greta Thunberg sailing across the Atlantic to attend a climate change conference in New York City and make a prolific, thought-provoking speech about the need for change. Extinction Rebellion protests in major cities in the UK. All challenged Editors to give up valuable front page space to cover the subject for their readers.
How refreshing then to hear of manufacturers in the kitchen, bedroom and bathroom market take the subject and grasp the initiative. We have heard from many companies in our market over the last few years leading the way with the launch of many various ‘green’ product developments, especially domestic appliance manufacturers.
The latest company to trail-blaze is German kitchen furniture manufacturer, Rotpunkt, who by implementing new measures at its production sites in Bünde and Getmold in Germany, has ensured that from 1st January 2020, kitchens are 100% carbon neutral!

Matt Phillips, Head of UK Operations at Rotpunkt explains “A consistent focus on environmental and social sustainability is the foundation for successful corporate development and as we enter a new era of global change, Rotpunkt welcomes the scope to evolve both brand and business and use ‘change as an opportunity’.”
“Aiming to set new standards within the kitchen furniture industry, our motivation is to produce kitchens as ethically as possible, which is why we have committed to 100% carbon neutral production with absolutely no compromise on quality or design. Our research shows that eco-credentials are a growing concern to the modern homeowner and our pledge for sustainable kitchen manufacture in 2020 is just one way we can reduce our carbon footprint and answer the growth for ethical consumerism” says Matt.
The interior design industry continues to tackle the debate on pollution, carbon emissions and climate change, and this has led to consumers becoming increasingly aware of the provenance and environmental impact of product design in the home.
Rotpunkt sustainability timeline
2017 acquisition of efficient cutting machines at Getmold site, reducing material usage & waste and enabling continual updating of its machinery & technologies.
2018 company-wide certification declared for energy management in accordance with ISO 50001 and the creation of a basis for future certifications and continuous action.
2018+ promotion of e-mobility by introducing bicycle subsidies for employees and family members. Travelling a total of 3,352,800 km/year to and from work, so every kilometre cycled by Rotpunkt employees will serve to protect the environment.
2019 development and implementation of continuous CO² reduction following analysis of Rotpunkt’s CO² emissions and its commitment to a CO² site balance sheet.
2020 100% carbon neutral production at Bünde and Getmold to reduce CO² emissions, increase efficiency and green project specification. Continual assessment is made to CO² balance sheet(s) to develop further measures for CO² reduction and ‘climate action’.
2021 complete company-wide conversion to green electricity and equal consideration of ecological, economic and social issues.

“As a premium kitchen manufacturer, we recognise our influence and ability to impact market-change, which is why the production of sustainable furniture solutions has become an integral part of our past and future brand and business methodology. We want to bring
this same level of stimulus to our UK retail network so they can help their customers make better choices and become part of Rotpunkt’s ‘climate action solution’,” says Matt.
Rotpunkt strongly believes that the furniture industry
[and humanity] is on a precipice, which is why it has implemented change to accommodate this new generation of homeowner so the market can effectively navigate the uncertainty of climate change-related consequences and anticipate
plans for future eco-oriented property development. The announcement of 100% carbon neutral manufacturing means that the company is preparing for what may lay ahead climatewise and confirms this with a brand message of, ‘Your future is safe with Rotpunkt’.

KEEP YOUR KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS UP TO DATE
The kitchen installation wasn’t finished. The customer had demanded that the work stopped because she wasn’t happy with what had been done so far, and now there was deadlock between her and the installer. T The retailer had made a list of remedial works that would be done and now wanted to get on with templating. But the customer’s list was longer than he anticipated and he felt the customer was being awkward and making things worse than they were.
Now, as an inspector, I was on-site to give my independent view.
Richard Renouf, Furniture & Floorcoverings Consultant
What I discovered was that the first run of base units was, apparently, ready to receive a length of stone worktop. At the left hand end was a fridge/freezer housing and then three topless base units. There was one small angle bracket on the last unit on the right, screwed into plasterboard and no other fixings. I used my inspection camera down the back of each unit to check. There was nothing else and it appeared that there was only one screw in a weak material. I made some notes and moved on to complete my inspection.
I decided to look properly under the base units to check that the feet were all in place but unfortunately, I found more than I expected. There was a small pile of adjustable fixing brackets, and they had been left out of sight. It’s frustrating because it would have been really easy for the installer to use and he could have positioned them to be located where they went into the studwork to ensure a secure fit.
My knowledge of the supplier meant that I was aware that this manufacturer did provide fixing brackets with every base cabinet to make the installers job easier, but they had deliberately not been used.
When my work was complete at this particular project and was driving home I thought about the discarded brackets. Had the installer forgotten the long drill that would be needed to fit these, and if so had he done
the best he could and just hid them away? Or did the installer not know what they were for or how to use them, maybe he thought that they were odd fittings and simply couldn’t work out what should be done with them?
In summary, keeping our knowledge and skills up to date is vital, but it doesn’t happen unless we make an effort. Working on our own or with the same fitting team all the time doesn’t introduce us to new ideas unless we come across them by accident and take the trouble to share them.
Membership of an organisation like BiKBBI is a great way to learn new things and keeping our skills up to date through training is a great benefit, too. New innovations, whether they are tools, fittings or techniques, can help us to work better, faster or more effectively and this means more income and fewer call backs…
If we’re doing only the same things we did five years ago, it could be time to learn something new!

Dust class M: Harmful dusts such as cement, filler, renders, paints and varnishes. MAC > 0.1 mg/m³, filter system degree of filtration > 99.9%
Dust category H: Pathogenic dusts that are carcinogenic (such as asbestos, arsenic and lead) or are contaminated with bacteria, germs or mould. MAC > 0.1 mg/m³, filter system degree of filtration > 99.995%
Dust volumes
Sanding drywall in a 90 m² apartment produces up to 54 litres of dust! No one would ingest or inhale an amount such as this by choice – no matter how concentrated, coarse or harmful the dust released may be.
Symptoms
1. Coarse dust particles are generally caught by the nasal hairs or the mucous membranes of the nasopharyngeal space but can cause diseases and irritation there too.
2. Fine dust particles which are inhaled can penetrate as far as the alveoli (air sacs) and cause serious diseases, such as asthma, chronic bronchitis or even cancer.
3. Harmful dusts in the air can – depending on the pollutant content – also cause irritation or allergic reactions of the skin.
Dust-free with a system
Festool has the right mobile dust extractor for every application, to suit every dust class and every site of use. No matter whether you're working with the large and powerful CT 48 for workshop areas or the small CTL SYS that you can easily take up on scaffolding when slung over your shoulder: Combined with a SORTAINER and SYSTAINER, mobile dust extractors become mobile workstations.
Dust-free with a method
With Festool, the mobile dust extractors are perfectly designed to work alongside the power tools. The dust is extracted directly at the tool – exactly where it is produced. A positive side effect: Working dust-free significantly extends the life of the machines and consumable materials.

DON’T MIX EMPTY CONTAINERS OF HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES WITH YOUR GENERAL WASTE
Did you know that most ‘empty’ containers of adhesive and sealant from installation work are actually classified as HAZARDOUS WASTE? This means that they should never be mixed with other general waste and can only be collected by a specialist hazardous waste contractor or taken to a specialist disposal facility that is licensed to process hazardous waste.
Jason Mohr, founder of bulky waste collection company Anyjunk. co.uk, explains why the installation community should be wary of turning a blind eye to this issue and how best to address it.
OLD HABITS FROM OLD LAW
Before 2015, the law allowed you to treat pots and tubes of hazardous substances with only small amounts of residue as non-hazardous. The test was whether the weight of the residual contents was less than 2% of the weight of the packaging. If it was, you could ignore it. As a result contractors and installation brands grew accustomed to throwing away finished tubes of silicon and glue etc. with their other waste and it all being disposed of together.
68 Waste Advice
Jason Mohr, CEO, ANYJUNK
IT ALL CHANGED IN 2015!
However, in 2015 the Environment Agency issued new technical guidance (Technical Guidance on the Classification and Assessment of Waste WM3) that removed the ambiguous 2% rule. The new guidance states explicitly that if a container contains any hazardous waste, no matter how small the residue, the whole container is hazardous and should be disposed of accordingly.
HOW SHOULD YOU DISPOSE OF THIS HAZARDOUS WASTE?
If you create hazardous waste, you have broadly two ways of disposing of it:
1. Get the waste collected from the site by a specialist hazardous waste contractor.
2. Put in place a process for your field operatives to securely contain and transport the hazardous items to designated storage sites equipped with hazardous waste bins. These bins can then be periodically emptied by a hazardous waste company and appropriately consigned using a hazardous waste consignment note.
OTHER ALTERNATIVES
1. Switch hazardous products for non-hazardous ones
Obviously this may only solve part of your problem, but just as asbestos was replaced with non-hazardous fire resistant alternatives, every day new products are being introduced to the market that achieve just as good an outcome as their toxic competitors.
2. Wash containers out
Under WM3, provided a container is 100% empty, it can be disposed of as packaging, and therefore as non-hazardous assuming the packaging material is also non-hazardous. The empty container could then go into your general mixed waste or potentially your plastic or even metal waste streams.
3. Reuse the containers
Reuse the containers instead of throwing them away. Rather than buying lots of small new tubes and bottles of adhesive, why not consider buying much larger containers and using them to top up smaller containers used by field operatives. This reduces both the amount of packaging waste and hazardous waste you create, and should probably also reduce your costs because buying big typically works out cheaper than buying lots of smaller amounts.
This all might seem a bit of a pain, particularly when you regularly walk past a skip or skip bag with an old tube of sealant or a paint tin mixed in alongside general builders waste. But nonetheless it’s the law. So if you want to operate compliantly (and avoid breaching your contractual commitments to your customers, employees and insurance providers), we recommend you review your current processes and consider how to change them to remain on the straight and narrow.

ROCA'S MALVA LAUNCHED WITH WATER SAVING COLD START TECHNOLOGY
BiKBBI sponsor Roca, has launched Malva, its latest brassware collection that meets the requirements for style and design, ease of installation and cost effectiveness as it includes Roca’s unique Cold Start technology.
“The bathroom is not designed in standard shapes anymore and we are seeing homeowners and buyers become more discerning about the styles they incorporate into their bathroom,” comments Claire Gay, Marketing Manager at Roca. “The new Roca Malva brassware is an elegant range that answers the need for a simple, stylish yet versatile collection for homeowners.”
Malva sits perfectly alongside round, soft or square sanitaryware shapes, providing retailers, specifiers, installers and homeowners with an ideal brassware range to recommend no matter what sanitaryware style they select.
Cold Start technology ensures water is only heated when it is required, which is a great benefit for homeowners.
As a manufacturer, Roca is continuously innovating and developing its product offering to ensure it offers the latest designs but also the newest technology.
One of the key water saving innovations Roca offers in its Malva brassware is Cold Start technology. Traditionally, when you turn on a tap, the water will be warm. This will automatically trigger the boiler, which can be expensive and wasteful, especially in a home where multigenerational families use water at different times. Cold Start technology ensures water is only heated when it is required, which is a great benefit for homeowners.
The Malva collection includes a variety of brassware options, including standard height basin mixers in smooth body and PUW options, extended height smooth body basin mixer bidet mixers in PUW and chain connector options as well as built in bath and shower and bath or shower mixers.
A benefit of the Malva range is Health protection, all of the polymers applied to the cartridge, flexible hose and aerators are certified as safe to drink, this is certified by the Water Regulations Advisory Scheme (WRAS). This is enhanced further by the application of high-quality metal alloys to ensure optimal water quality.
Malva has been designed to last and has been quality standard tested for up to 1,000,000 movements. Its soft turn lever makes it easy to operate and the whole range incorporates Roca’s Evershine® technology. This is an innovative chrome plating system, involving an electrolytic coating, which produces a hard-wearing finish on all taps and showers. It gives customers assurance that their bathrooms will stand the test of time.

WHY KBB INSTALLERS NEED TO PROTECT THEMSELVES IN 2020
It’s incredible to think that the year 2020 is upon us as it only seems like yesterday that we celebrated the new Millenium! However, for business people and especially those who are self-employed, the turn of any New Year gives business people a chance to reflect on the previous 12 months and plan and look ahead to the year ahead.
This year seems a little different though, with Brexit imminent there is a heck of a lot of uncertainty and I think it is making all of us rightly cautious to some degree.
Being cautious is what attracts many installers to our business as anything that gives you a bit of extra peace
of mind is welcome. To adequately cover yourself and your business insurance-wise is an absolute must or risk leaving you and your business exposed to risks like accidental damage and the dangers of legal challenges from angry customers.
So how do you best choose a business insurance policy, one that’s right for you?
Knowing which is which, and where to find them, is part and parcel of choosing the right small business insurance policy. KBB installers should be aware that some cover is required by law and some are available as an optional safeguard against threats to you or your business.
72
Christopher Bates, Divisional Director, Corporate and Commercial Division, UIB Group.
Insurance Matters
Legal essentials
Employers’ liability insurance is generally required by law for everyone with employees in the UK.
It covers you against claims for compensation if an employee is injured or becomes ill as a result of negligence in the workplace. When deciding on a policy, consider:
• The amount covered - Most policies provide cover for £10 million as standard.
• The assistance offered - Some policies include access to legal advice in some circumstances.
• The extras - Certain policies can cover temporary employees, for example.
Protecting property
Buildings insurance will often cover damage to property you own, but if you’re in an office or retail unit, you could look for specialist office or shop insurance cover. These specialist products protect against things like damage to your computers, stock etc.
Most installer businesses rely on a van. A dedicated business vehicle policy could help you stay on the road in the event of things like theft, damage and breakdown, for example.
Being cautious is what attracts many installers to our business as anything that gives you a bit of extra peace of mind is welcome.
KBB installers should be aware that some cover is required by law and some are available as an optional
safeguard against threats to you or your business.
Covering your back (absolutely essential for kbb installer businesses)
Any public-facing business should also consider the risk of injuring or badly advising their clients. There are two key protections against this:
• Public liability insurance, which covers your legal costs and business losses resulting from accidents that happen to anyone at your premises or as a result of negligence in your work environment.
• Professional indemnity is designed for advisers and professionals. It protects you if your client feels they have suffered financial losses because of negligence or mistakes in your advice or services.
Covering your concerns
You can tailor most policies to include the things that are relevant to your business, but sometimes you’ll need to buy separate insurance. For example, you may need to insure company smartphones against theft or damage, or plan for separate healthcare cover if illness and absenteeism are a worry.
Ultimately, it comes down to the protections
that are right for your own business. If you know what you need, a clear search can yield the perfect policy.
If assistance is needed, it may be best to contact an insurance broker. BiBKKI’s sole recommended insurance broker is UIB.

WANT TO ENSURE A STEADY FLOW OF CLIENTS?
If you’re asking yourself that question and want to find ways to encourage a steady stream of clients then read on for some key recommendations from Houzz, the leading platform for home renovation and design, and their community of home professionals, to help you learn how to streamline your processes and stand out to the right clients.
Know your workflow
Businesses will often be going through the same steps or processes with every new client they take on, without even realising it. Take a moment to consider what your process is and then you’ll be able to focus on streamlining it. For example, are you replying to all inquiries with a similar email response? If so, set up an email template that you can have ready to fire off much more quickly and efficiently. Or, if you’re finding that you need the same information from potential clients, try jotting down a standard set of questions in your phone, so you can make sure you ask everything and get the answers that you need in that initial meeting.
If you haven’t already, try creating a visual representation of your workflows, to help you track the different stages of each job and spot areas that can be streamlined.
Don’t drop off the radar
When focused on a big project, it can be really easy to lose sight of everything else that is happening in the business, especially future jobs. Emails can quickly build up and not responding to enquiries quickly enough, can affect a potential customer’s perception of the company. In busy periods perhaps consider setting an automated email response, to ensure clients know their enquiry has been received and will be responded to.
Even at your busiest times, maintaining a presence on social media can be an effective way to stay on a potential client’s radar, whether that’s a quick post on your blog or Twitter account, or even uploading a photo of your current project to Houzz.
Be your best advocate
We’ve all heard the saying ‘you’re only as good as your last job’, so ensuring that you are showcasing your most recent projects, is vital. Once a job is finished, make sure to ask the client for feedback and take photos, then post it to your website, Houzz profile and social platforms as self-promotion. Think of your most recent job as your CV for new jobs! Professional on Houzz, Brooke Copp-Barton of Home Interior Design always ensures her Houzz profile, is up to date with her latest projects, explaining that, “it’s a wonderful tool for showcasing your work and engaging with the design community and potential clients”
Professional on Houzz, Amit Malhotra of Aflux Designs always makes sure to ask for feedback from clients. “Having nearly 30 five-star reviews has given us credibility. We want to push this credibility into other forms of social media and PR, but we always try to get feedback as soon as the job is finished. Also, we are not the kind of company that walks away the minute our job is finished. A lot of our clients become lifelong friends and they know they can call on us if they need any advice or an item to be fixed, as we always try to maintain a healthy relationship post completion.”
