As we hurtle towards that imaginary Christmas finish line, this year has been an eventful year for the industry and indeed the institute.

With big changes at B&Q now working their way through to the Homefit closure in December, we are most definitely seeing the fruit from our involvement as we see our web visitor numbers soar. In fact, we’re on track to achieving over half a million views on our site this year, with a significant number of these coming from B&Q. This will of course lead to great opportunities for our members.

Most notably, our apprenticeship programme kicked off in September, with real life apprentices beginning their KBB installation journey. The magazine will follow the journey of George Alden-Smith, who is one of the apprentices and will regularly report on his progress. After two years of planning, it’s exciting and rewarding to get this initiative finally underway.

In 2018 we have also seen the arrival of some great new Corporate Sponsors who will undoubtedly add enormous benefit to our members.

Finally, I was delighted to see the return of an old friend and former colleague Justin Adgar. Justin has been appointed the Director of Installation Services at our retail partners Bathstore. This is a great move for Bathstore, as Justin brings a plethora of experience – even if most of his colleagues will need help from subtitles owing to his broad Geordie accent! Good luck to him, we all wish him and the team the very best for exciting times ahead.

THE APPRENTICE

The first batch of BiKBBI sponsored apprentices have begun their journey to becoming fully qualified KBB installers. We talk to one of them - George Alden-Smith about his first impressions and what his hopes and aspirations are for the future; we also speak to his employer, Marshall Scott Ltd, whose team are supporting him to find out their thinking and what they expect from George…

▶ Tell us a bit about yourself George, where are you from and how old are you?

Maldon near Chelmsford, Essex. I'm 19.

▶ Who is your employer?

Marshall Scott Ltd the company specialises in kitchen fitting.

▶ Have they been supportive in you taking an apprenticeship role?

Yes, very much so. When they first employed me they set out what they wanted me to achieve and even paid for me to go on a starter electrical course in Gatwick. They paid for all my expenses too.

▶ How is your time split between site work and college work?

I have a day release on Thursdays to attend my apprenticeship course at the impressive PROCAT college.

▶ Which are you enjoying the most at the moment, the practical work or the theory at PROCAT?

It depends, both really I guess. When I’m on site I work with just one installer every day and even though we get on really well he’s quite a bit older than me, it’s nice to see all my friends of around the same age at the college once

a week, I suppose it gives my working life a nice variation. I like the split if I’m honest.

▶ Are you impressed with the PROCAT set-up?

Yes definitely. For a college that has only just set up these apprenticeships in conjunction with the BiKBBI, they really know what they are doing.

▶ How did you become aware of a potential career in kbb installation?

Through a friend of my Dad. I had been working in carpentry in Colchester for about a year before I took this job and it all fitted perfectly because it stimulated my interest as a career and it also benefitted me for being located much closer to where I lived and better still, it involves working indoors and therefore out of the cold and inclement weather in the winter which I didn’t like .

▶ And why did you choose ‘fitted interiors’ course?

I like seeing a job through from start to finish. To rip out a tired old kitchen and replace it perfectly with new units etc. gives me great satisfaction, I really enjoy it.

▶ Are you enjoying the course? Yes, definitely.

▶ What do you most like about KBB installation

Standing back and seeing the end product at the end of a job

▶ And what do you least like?

At the moment I’m not so keen on the plumbing. I’ve done quite a bit of it on site but we haven’t got to this area yet at college, maybe when we do I will enjoy it a little more.

BiKBBI News 

▶ What are your career plans and ambitions?

Hopefully, once I’m fully qualified I can go self-employed which my employer wants as well. I guess my long-term ambition is to own my own company.

▶ Finally, what do you like to do in your spare time?

I play rugby on Tuesday’s and Thursdays. I play for the first team at Maldon Rugby Club as a tight-head prop or hooker, I’ve been playing for 10 years and

THE EMPLOYER

▶ Whereabouts is the business based?

125 High Street, Maldon, Essex. It’s a beautiful coastal town near Chelmsford.

▶ Can you be specific about what your company does please? (e.g. kitchen installation, bathroom installation, both? Do you fit bedrooms? Carry out your own construction work etc.)

We design and install mid to high end kitchens and pride ourselves on creating designs that encompass a whole area and bring in a wow factor. With clever design we achieve this cost effectively by balancing spending the money where it matters most to the customer. We also do small construction work as part of the kitchen renovation.

▶ How old is the business?

The business has been in operation for 5 years. We rebranded last year after deciding to drop homewares and concentrate solely on kitchens. This gave the business greater focus on the area we enjoy the most.

▶ How many people are employed?

There are currently 5 employees.

▶ I assume that this is your first apprentice appointment?

Yes, George is our first apprentice.

▶ Why now?

We are expanding the business and know that we will need a greater number of quality craftsmen in the future. Taking George on now is the first step

my Uncle is Head Coach there. I did judo for 5 years and got to brown belt level and then fell out of love with it a bit so stopped. I love socialising with all my rugby mates, I’d be the first one to say let’s go out.

to ensuring the high standards we set are introduced at an early stage. It also allows us to contribute to the community by giving young talent the opportunity to develop this valuable skill set.

▶ What do you hope to achieve by this initiative?

I would like it to produce craftsmen that are knowledgeable and have been taught the correct way to fit a kitchen. Many kitchen fitters underestimate the complexity and craftsman skill required for installing bespoke high end products. Our kitchens are high quality bespoke products, and this aspect of joinery poses challenges to the less experienced kitchen fitter. Over the 2 years George

5
BiKBBI News 

is training, this initiative will give him the guidance of true craftsmen and hands on experience with the challenges found at the premium product level.

▶ Why this particular lad? George came recommended by one of our craftsmen and we discovered he had a great customer focused disposition with a real willingness to learn the trade. He is a lovely lad that gets on well with everyone, showroom staff and customers alike and is a pleasure to develop.

▶ How will his time be split between education and onsite training?

He has 1 day a week in college and the remaining four days he spends with our craftsmen on customer sites.

▶ Did you have apprenticeship training? And if so in what? If not, do you wished that there had been a bespoke apprenticeship as this BiKBBI initiative in conjunction with PROCAT?

I didn’t have apprenticeship training, however Lee Thomas our senior designer began his career with an apprenticeship in cabinet making which he said has been invaluable throughout his career. We first contacted PROCAT through his recommendation.

▶ Why do you think there has been a lack of apprenticeships in the past?

I think many businesses simply don’t plan for the future, and often have a revolving door when it comes to fitters, with one moving on after the other. They therefore don’t have the consistency of approach to train

with. As we strive to always deliver consistency and quality we have a different approach as it future proofs our business. Having an apprentice does come with costs both financially and in time but this BiKBBI initiative in conjunction with PROCAT genuinely makes it much easier.

▶ How long have you been BiKBBI members?

The BiKBBI is new to us but any organisation that helps improve the quality of the industry can only be a good thing and help retailers such as ourselves.

BACK OF THE NET!

BiKBBI confirm partnership with Charlton Athletic Women’s Football Club

Supporting the next generation and providing equal opportunities is the credo behind the BiKBBI’s agreement to become principle partners of Charlton Athletic Women’s FC for three years, until 2021.

The partnership is just the beginning of a concerted drive by the institute to introduce young women to its industry, and particularly, for a vocational

career within KBB installation. The announcement perfectly coincides with the excitement currently around the opening of the BiKBBI’s Approved Training Facility and the Apprenticeship launch at PROCAT back in September.

The BiKBBI has identified the partnership with Charlton Athletic Women’s FC due to the synergy between the two organisations

and women’s football in general. BiKBBI CEO, Damian Walters explains, “There has been a seismic shift in the last few years of the general acceptance of women in trades that have traditionally been the domain of blokes, like general building and plumbing for example. This change of attitude has been most identifiable in sport, with a much ‘levelling of the playing field.”

For example, the FA (Football

Association) has made huge strides in creating opportunities for women and girls to play our national sport; so much so, that football is now officially the biggest female team sport in England with almost 150,000 players competing in affiliated league and cup competitions. This represents a percentage increase of a whopping 1,425% in the last 15 years (there were just 10,400 participants in 1993 when records began).”

Founded in 1905. Charlton Athletic is an English football institution and has had many glorious moments in its history, none more so than winning the FA cup. Its Women's team forms an integral part of the club’s community strategy and was founded in 1991.

CAWFC is an FA Charter Standard Club and an FA Girls Regional Talent Club. The club comprises two Women's Teams (First and Development) and four junior teams (Under 10/12/14/16) involving literally hundreds of girls and young women throughout the London and surrounding areas, especially South East London where the club is based. The First team play in the FA Women's Championship, the 2nd highest league in women’s football. They also compete in the FA Cup and the FA Continental (League) Cup.

Damian added, “This is no ordinary partnership. Our industry needs to attract the next generation of installers and this should be inclusive with a fair representation from women. The BiKBBI has welcomed its first female members in the last few years but in all honesty, we

are only scratching the surface so far, because the growth potential is vast as women can massively help narrow the current skills shortage. Hence the partnership with Charlton Athletic Women’s Football Club, which is a strategic decision to run concurrently with our drive to attract female apprentices to the recently launched BiKBBI devised and approved apprenticeship initiative.”

To underline the massive growth potential of women’s football and therefore the extended reach of the BiKBBI to potential female apprentices/members, it is estimated that over 1.1 million women play kick-about football and the sport, just like the BiKBBI, is determined to break down barriers. For example, women and girls from some ethnic

communities remain unaware of the opportunities which exist, and there are cultural, religious and social norms to overcome. The same applies to disabled women and girls. Organised sport, especially football, is possibly the quickest and easiest way to create awareness of these opportunities through its ‘togetherness.’

The FA states that involvement of females in football also extends beyond playing as it wants to increase the number of female coaches, referees and

administrators as it underpins its work, especially as there are other key messages, stating, “Football is fun, it improves self-esteem, creates new friendships, and like all sport, it plays a key role in combating obesity, particularly in teenagers.” Perhaps, more importantly, as far as the BiKBBI is concerned, women’s football and sport in general provides an opportunity to close the skills gap by expanding the career possibilities to potential future generations of KBB installers.

...

We asked Steve Adamson, CAWFC’s General Manager a few questions about his thoughts on the sponsorship (there will be more from Steve in the next issue of The Installer Magazine):

Why do you think the BiKBBI is a good fit for CAWFC?

“We are all about promoting equality and pushing women forward. The BiKBBI brand follows similar ideas to us as they want to promote women in what previously would be maledominated workspaces. The institute wants to, and does lead the way in its market which is exactly what we want to do here.”

What do you hope to achieve both short and long term?

“This is a partnership which is mutually beneficial to both parties which is why it's so fantastic to have the BiKBBI on board. There is no hiding from us, running a women's football club costs a lot of money which is why we need to bring more sponsors on board to help raise the income that will keep the club a float. The BiKBBI on the other hand has a clear gap in employment which needs to be filled by both women and men for their next generation of fitters and installers. By using our platform, the aim is to help recruit more students to choose apprenticeships which the BiKBBI will be offering. This is a longterm project and investment from the institute but will make sure that long term their business has the next set of recruits coming through.”

What are the clubs ambitions with regards to football?

“Charlton Athletic Women has two sets of ambitions. The first is to have the first team compete at the highest level which the club can. We have gained promotion to the second highest division in women's football, but we are not there just to make up the numbers; we are there to challenge every single opponent we play and provide fans with entertaining football.

We also have an ambition to bring great players through our academy and into our first team. We have a great history and success of bringing top players into our side and in the past creating England international players so there is no reason why we can't do this again.”

The Installer Magazine will be following the fortunes of CAWFC in every issue and will also report regularly on how the sponsorship is working for both parties. Look out for our next issue (winter) where we speak with Steve Adamson in a little more depth about the hopes and aspirations of the relationship.

CAMS IN TEST MODE

October saw testing commence on the muchanticipated new IT system at the institute.

Referred to as CAMS, Compliance & Administrative Management System, the new IT solution is set to change the way the organisation manages both its membership and its compliance. As part of CAMS launch, the way in which memberships are both priced and structured will change too.

All current members will be set up on the new system as a ‘business’ and will subsequently be allocated a new ‘membership number’. This number will replace their existing membership number and will be in a new simplified alphanumeric format.

Once the business is registered and issued a new membership number, each installer registered with the business will be allocated a new format ‘Licence Number’. Again, this Licence Number will be in a new alphanumeric format.

In November, members will receive digital confirmation of their membership credentials, which will include their unique login details for CAMS. This login will provide direct, view only, access to CAMS which will help them to manage their relationship with the institute.

One of the key features of CAMS is its fully-automated compliance reminder service, which will send regular prompts, where

appropriate, in the run up to our members document expiries.

The already paperless operation will allow members to view their qualifications, certificates and documents online. The system will become a central place to both record, store and retrieve business information relevant to their respective ventures – very much a tool that members can use.

The system, which has government grade security, has the capacity to develop further, as fast changing technology provides options for continual improvement.

As part of its launch, the institute also took the opportunity to simplify its fees:

October, membership for businesses, including the licence for one installer starts at just £99 (for engineers) to £199 (for domestic installers). Memberships can be paid for in advance, or by spreading the cost via interest-free monthly instalments.

The British Institute of Kitchen, Bedroom and Bathroom Instillation is also approved by HMRC, as a professional organisation and therefore members can claim a tax rebate against fees paid for membership.

DEVELOPERS BUILDING IN STYLE WITH ULTRA-THIN WORKSURFACES

Housebuilders are the largest growth area for sales of Zenith solid-core laminate worksurface. Nick Jones, Sales, and Marketing Director for BiKBBI sponsor, Wilsonart UK, has recently commented, “The demand for Zenith has been remarkable since its launch in 2016. We were the first to market with a slim solid core product range of its kind. We knew it would appeal to kitchen and bathroom designers but the success of Zenith with builders and contractors has been a fantastic bonus. Zenith is 100% solid and waterproof which means it can be stored on site. It’s adaptable and easy to handle on site too so can be cut as it is required for kitchens, bathrooms, utility rooms and WCs with no need for off-site templating.”

Kitchen installers, whether they undertake site work, domestic work or both, should be aware that Zenith is available in three convincing textures mimicking either concrete, granite or wood, thus offering a compelling range of design options:

IMPEY INVESTS IN DIGITAL CAMPAIGN FOR SOHO RANGE

BERTAZZONI ENTERS DISHWASHER MARKET IN THE UK

Italian appliance manufacturer Bertazzoni – which partnered with several UK distributors earlier this year – has launched its first ever dishwasher models to the UK and Ireland markets.

Wetroom manufacturer Impey has made a “substantial” investment in a digital marketing campaign to drive footfall to showrooms displaying the company’s blackframed Soho wetroom screen range – launched earlier this year at KBB Birmingham – across the UK.

The company has created marketing assets to support retailers alongside the “significant, targeted online advertising campaign” aimed at driving potential customers to the Soho landing page.

“The reaction to our Soho range has been fabulous and we have been delighted by the investment which our

showrooms have shown in creating the most stunning displays,” said Impey group sales director Steve Huntly. Jerry Wallace of Soho retailer Bathroom Solutions in Bristol added: “We were drawn to the on-trend design, colour and finish of Impey’s Soho range, which is ideal for the market at the moment.

“Soho has the contemporary look that customers are after and it’s an excellent modern option for the showroom. We have installed it as part of our window display; it’s a great addition to complement the range of wetroom solutions we offer and has been generating interest and sales.”

The products – which will be available to consumers from early 2019 – are A+++ rated and available with or without a built-in sliding door. The company showcased the models for the first time at EuroCucina earlier this year.

“Since launching in the UK and Ireland last year, we’ve received positive feedback about the strength and quality of our product offering from consumers and suppliers alike, so it only made sense to extend our offering beyond cooking appliances,” said Bertazzoni UK and Ireland managing director Maurizio Severgnini.

“We’ve earned many loyal customers who understand that buying Bertazzoni means investing in Italian craftsmanship, beautiful engineering and high-end design. With the positive reaction we’ve had, we know that some will see this as an opportunity to fully equip their kitchen with Bertazzoni products, offering a complete design solution for the whole kitchen space.”

Severgnini added: “We’re expecting a strong response to the launch and can’t wait for these products to hit the market.”

WRAS REVEALS TOP 10 PLUMBING PROBLEMS IN UK

A new survey by the Water Regulation Advisory Scheme – WRAS – has uncovered the top 10 most complained about plumbing problems in the UK, with a dripping tap taking first place in the list alongside leaking pipes and clogged drains.

The survey – which questioned 2,000 homeowners – found that a continuously running toilet, burst pipe, water temperature issue and noisy pipes also made the list alongside frozen pipes, flooding and a water storage tank failure.

“Fixing faulty and leaking water fittings such as

taps, pipes, and toilets as soon as possible is a good idea, both to save water and money where homes are on a water meter,” said WRAS managing director Julie Spinks.

“Some leaks can also cause significant damage if not dealt with promptly. Many common plumbing problems can be prevented by using a qualified plumber and only installing water fittings or fixtures that have been tested to show they meet legal requirements.”

Tahnee Miles, Merchandise Manager for Worktops Express, said, "Zenith is already selling like hot cakes, our customers clearly love the product and the flexibility it gives them for shelves, waterfall ends and drainer grooves."

Zenith was the first superslim solid-core laminate worktop to market. At just 12.5mm

thick, it has identical decorative surface finish on two sides, perfect to create waterfall-end panels and co-ordinated bespoke open shelves. In the kitchen an under-mount sink with drainer grooves is practical

Zenith can be installed with standard tooling so there is no costly templating or long waits for off-site manufacture and it is also competitively priced, positioned between premium laminate and solid surface. Its look and texture create a realism that is virtually indistinguishable from natural slab materials such as the very costly ceramic surfaces.

the history of CAt phones

While CAT has created a name for itself in the smartphone and tablet markets, it may be surprising to some that the company started out with a crawler-type tractor in 1904.

Apart from waterproof and dustproof features, phones were created to withstand harsh drops. Especially against concrete.

Used to cultivate the soggy Californian farmlands, the company soon grew in quality and reputation, Benjamin Holt finally merged with his main competitor in 1925. It was then that the Caterpillar Tractor Company was formed.

When it comes to smartphones, the first of its kind, the B25, was released in 2013. An almost overnight success among professionals in rough and tough industries such as construction and oil, the devices were created to withstand the hazards that are part and parcel of these sectors.

However, It wasn’t long before CAT and Bullitt realised that they needed to go further. Beyond just creating phones safe enough for challenging workplaces, they wished to meet an existing gap in the market for devices

that possessed genuinely useful features for those in such industries.

Initially, much of the focus was on making these devices more durable. So, apart from waterproof and dustproof features, phones were created to withstand harsh drops. Especially against concrete. Protection against thermal shock and severe vibration was later added. With time, CAT didn’t just create phones that merely met rigorous military standards. These devices unequivocally surpassed them.

The latest CAT models, therefore, aren’t just resistant to every kind of element, they also feature two-way radios and exceptionally effective loudspeakers. The newest device also breathes life to the world’s first thermal imaging smartphone camera and more.

34
The CAT B25 Company Profile 

While these features seem like they’re geared for a specific application or military environments, this is far from the truth. Beyond usage in harsh working conditions and the industries mentioned above, these devices are surprisingly usable even in everyday contexts. Designed with standard smartphone features, the latest CAT devices even come with cameras that rival those of big brand competitors.

All devices also feature a lockdown button that offers complete water ingress protection. This means that on certain devices, waterproof

capabilities extend as long as one hour. Even when it comes to battery, users are treated to specs far above the industry standard. Thus, for users who are clumsy, looking to travel to extreme conditions for an extended period or are even just looking for a hardy and long-lasting device, CAT phones are an indisputable choice.

and an easy-grip and rugged design, the phone is a trusty sidekick for those who live life on the edge.

Renowned for its military-grade features, the device also totes an 8MP autofocus rear camera and a 2MP front-facing lens. Meant to withstand damaging drops and scratches, the device comes with the Corning Gorilla Glass 3, rendering it a drop-proof smartphone.

As mentioned before, the CAT S31 is also designed with an impressive battery, boasting a total of 30 hours of talk time and 38 days on standby mode. Above all, it's also supremely waterproof up to 1.2 metres for 35 minutes!

as the world's first thermal imaging camera and an indoor air monitor, this smartphone is every rugged user’s dream device.

The phone allows users to measure distance with precise laser projections, making it an invaluable companion in challenging environments. Built with the Corning Gorilla Glass 5, it’s drop-proof up to 1.8 metres on concrete, as well as dust, sand, and dirt resistant. It can also remain functional between temperatures ranging from -25°C to 55°C and is Category 4 resistant to humidity and salt mist.

For those who need to lead secret double lives, the phone is also available with a dual-sim capacity and boasts a Qualcomm Octa-core processor. It's also handy for covert photography with its 16MP and 8MP rear and front-facing cameras.

Thermal imaging is another one of the device's features, able to locate a heat source up to 400°C in complete darkness. Further, with the ability to detect damp conditions, draught, leaks or blockages, the device packs in specs and features that gives everyday users a range of superpowers.

SOLID SURFACE! SO MANY OPTIONS…

Installations Standards Partner, Sheridan gives The Installer Magazine an overview of choices of solid surface materials and how their benefits compare …

We all know that solid surface materials are extremely popular in the UK for use as kitchen and bathroom work-surfaces and there is plenty of choice for installers and their customers to consider when planning a project. Materials range from Corian and Hanex at the top end, with Mistral and Apollo Slab Tech mid-priced and then products like Apollo Magna and Earthstone which are priced just above the top end of High Pressure Laminate.

These materials can be supplied in finishes ranging from plain solid colours to something that’s very close in appearance to having natural marble or granite. Conveniently, their edges can be machined into almost any edge profile to suit the consumer’s aspirations.

43
On the surface 
There is a solid surface available for all budgets and applications, and the colour options available make it a great product for any type of kitchen.

A major advantage of these materials is that sinks and bowls can be cast, moulded or fabricated in matching materials to and set into the work-surfaces where the top surface flows into the sink as if moulded in one piece.

Once installed, they have an advantage over all other work surface materials, especially visually, by having seamless and discreet joints which means they can be installed in areas requiring high levels of hygiene in the health and catering and food retailing sectors as well as domestic kitchens. Both applications share similarities in appearance but be aware that as price levels increase so does

the flexibility of what can be created and installed.

Whilst solid surfaces are not extremely hard and scratch resistant, they do benefit the end-user in as much as that most damages to their surfaces can be repaired. This, therefore, makes for an attractive proposition when comparing with other hard surfaces. Solid surface worktops are non-porous and chemically resistant. Even though the base materials are very similar being PMMA Acrylic/ Polyester based sheet materials, the main variances between them is in how the raw material sheets are fabricated into worksurfaces and installed.

 On the surface
Once installed, they have an advantage over all other work surface materials, especially visually, by having seamless and discreet joints

Here are some comparisons:

1 ▶ At the top end of the market materials such as Corian and Hanex are manufactured in 12mm thick sheets which cut, shaped and joined together in almost infinite variations of overall length, width and thickness. They are fabricated onto a sub-frame to support the overall structure, the material can also be used as cladding to this structure or to surrounding walls and furniture, all with inconspicuous joints and the generating an appearance of being carved from a solid block.

An ability to have seamless and unobtrusive joints means that the product can be delivered in sections and then assembled and installed on site. This is critical where there are potential access difficulties like having to fit it into a lift, or if it’s a very large installation like a commercial hotel or hospital kitchen for example. These materials can easily be thermoformed and machined into curved shapes to match a designer’s imagination. These products require highly- trained and skilled fabricators and installers to deliver the almost infinite possible variety of designs and applications.

2 ▶ Middle market products are supplied in much thicker sheets and are not supplied on a sub frame. They are usually 20mm, 25mm or 30mm deep. The big advantage of using these is when compared to solid surface material, it is requires much simpler fabrication and installation requirements; however, the downside is that they cannot be used for some of the more complex designs or compete on thickness variations. These comparatively simple products do not require the same training and skill levels as products like Corian and Hanex but can still be joined and installed in large complex shapes (note: the sheets cannot be thermoformed but can be cut into shapes with curved edges). They are easy enough to fabricate and can also be supplied in modular sizes for KBB fitters to install in their customer’s home.

3 ▶ At the more affordable end of the market the raw material is manufactured into much thinner sheets ranging in thickness from 3 to 6mm, this is bonded to a chipboard core and supplied as worktops in the same way as HPL worktops. The shaping of these work surfaces is more limited but curved end pieces can be fabricated for them and moulded sinks can also be supplied. These products are usually supplied in modular sizes for home installation, the advantages of seamless and inconspicuous joints, moulded sinks, cladding, damage repair etc. are retained but at an affordable cost compared to those products more heavily priced.

Solid surface materials are batch sensitive in that each manufacturing batch of material is not quite the same as others but within each batch it is very consistent enabling large assemblies to be fabricated with minimal evidence of joints. Finished installations surfaces are non-porous, seamless and finished to a satin matt sheen that is very easy to maintain and to keep hygienically clean. The surface finish is long-lasting and can be easily renewed if desired, most surfaces damaged from impact, sharp edges and somewhat surprisingly, in most cases, harsh chemical attacks can be repaired.

There is a solid surface available for all budgets and applications, and the colour options available make it a great product for any type of kitchen. Earthstone and Apollo Magna are great options for the budget conscious or the developer, whilst Corian can be seen on the most luxurious and top-spec kitchens. Overall it is an extremely versatile product which can find a place in any kitchen design. www.sheridan-uk.com

A CASHLESS SOCIETY

The BiKBBI recently announced a new relationship with Worldpay to offer its members an opportunity to access Worldpay’s payment services.”

As highly skilled professionals, BiKBBI members are known for their professionalism, expertise and reliability. Your accreditation alone indicates a mark of quality in a highly competitive industry.

Yet how many of you have thought about payments as a differentiator?

The truth is that customer expectations are changing[1], making it more important than ever to consider this final stage in the customer journey, just as you would the initial consultation and installation.

46
Payment Advice

In short, it’s time to think about accepting card payments as a way of enhancing customer satisfaction.

A cashless society

The UK is increasingly a cashless society. Debit cards overtook cash for the first time last year as the most popular form of payment, according to UK Finance. Some 13.2 billion debit card payments were made in 2017 compared to 13.1 billion cash payments, and the gulf is expected to widen even further.

Although cash remains a favourite with many, there are a growing number of consumers who “almost never” use it at all: around 3.4 million, according to UK Finance[2].

At the same time a range of emerging technologies are hitting the market to make card acceptance easy and affordable for small and micro-businesses on-themove. So what does this mean for your business?

By accepting card payments on-the-go, BiKBBI members can enhance the payment experience even further for those customers who prefer not to pay by cash, cheque or bank transfer. Cards also offer security benefits in that you won’t be carrying large amounts of cash around. Getting that money into your account sooner could also improve cash flow, while digital card data can be analysed every month[3] to help you manage your business more strategically.

We can help

The UK is built on the success of its small businesses[4]. Worldpay, the UK’s leading payment provider[5] trusted by over 300,000 UK small businesses, is committed to helping meet the payment needs of small businesses as they grow.

That’s why Worldpay offer innovative mobile payment solutions like the MOVE5000 terminal.

It’s a handy device for kitchen, bathroom and bedroom installers who want to offer immediate card payments to customers, wherever they are.

By taking payments on site there’s no waiting around for a cheque or an invoice to be paid. It’s fast, simple and secure, and could help improve customer satisfaction. Set-up is simple, the latest touchscreen technology makes it easy to use, and there’s 24/7 UK based support if you need it.

WDU BENEFITS EXPLAINED IN NEW VIDEO BY FRANKE

FRANKE LAUNCHES AN ANIMATED VIDEO WHICH WILL HELP INSTALLERS EXPLAIN THE BENEFITS OF ITS WDUS TO THEIR CUSTOMERS

Franke has launched a short animated video to highlight the benefits of its waste disposal unit (WDU) range. The video, available on the ‘UKFranke’ YouTube channel (above), uses the company’s eye-catching ‘Make it Wonderful’ branding and illustrative style to act as a user-friendly selling tool to show consumers.

The video outlines the main features of the units

and their benefits from hygiene and convenience to safety features and ease of installation.

Says Jeanette Ward, communications manager at Franke: “Our research has suggested that many consumers have never considered a waste disposal unit because they are either not aware of the benefits, or they assume they will be difficult to install.

“Using the video, installers can show their customers that WDUs make short work of all kinds of food waste, reducing the amount going into the bin – and to landfill – and are very easy to install, even retrospectively.”

The Franke WDU Turbo Elite range includes the continuous feed TE-50, TE75, slimline TE-75S, TE-125 and the powerful batch feed TE-125B. All are designed to rid the kitchen of unsightly and unhygienic organic household waste safely, quickly and simply. While running water through the

unit, food is instantly liquefied into fine particles that are easily flushed through the pipework system.

All models feature antibacterial odour protection for added hygiene, with the assurance of a ten year guarantee. The five WDUs

in the range offer different performance levels to deal with differing household waste requirements with sound insulation for quieter operation.

Compatible with most sinks, they each feature robust stainless steel grinding components within their corrosion-proof chambers, with a special guard to stop cutlery from being accidentally dropped into the unit.

The TE-50 has a ½ HP motor and speed of 2600 RPM; the TE-75S and TE-75 both have a ¾ HP motor with a speed of 2700 RPM; the TE-125 has a powerful 1¼ HP/2800 RPM motor; the TP-125B utilises a batch feed system, with a 1¼ HP/2800 RPM motor. Thanks to a permanent magnet motor, the units reach high speed instantly, producing more torque per kilo than other brands. FROM OVERALLS TO WETSUITS

How long have you been installing and what areas do you cover?

I’ve been involved in the kitchen design, build, production business in one guise or another for around 27 years. I cover the affluent York area which is convenient for me as I don’t have to stray too far from home - usually around a twentymile radius.

What do you install and what’s your specialty?

I only fit kitchens now but in the past, I have been involved with all aspects of building.

Do you install yourself or do you have a team/teams of installers working for you?

I’ve previously employed people and had contracts with Commodore, Symphony, MFI, Wicks and Wren. At present I have scaled back my operation and now concentrate solely on Wren, preferring less money and an easier life.

57
Installer Profile 
We profile Kevin Pidd, kbb installer, deep sea diver, and budding author.

How did you become a kbb installer?

After leaving school I began an apprenticeship as a joiner with a local company call H. Bentley Joinery. I qualified as a 1st and 2nd fix joiner in 1991 and left the company because they started fitting specialist roofs on listed buildings, which I hated as it was dirty horrible work. After leaving I decided to take up a ‘temporary position’ with Moores Furniture Group which lasted 10 years! Whilst at Moores I worked within every department and eventually progressed to Continuous Improvement Manager. In 2001 I took a leap of faith by leaving Moores to start my own business.

If you weren’t an installer, what would you be?

I am a fairly extrovert character and I love to try different things. For example, in 2008 I auditioned

for the X factor in Manchester as a dare; I didn’t progress as apparently, you need to be able to sing! In answer to your question, if I wasn’t a fitter I would have loved to have been an actor or something with a similar artistic flare.

What has been your biggest business challenge?

The biggest challenge I have had in business was managing the crash of 2008/2009. The sites we had contracts for in Leeds and Bradford stopped building overnight with no warning at all! This left us with tough decisions to make with regards to our workforce; sadly, everyone had to go as did all the vans tools etc. It really was a difficult time for all concerned.

What’s been your biggest personal challenge?

Like every small business owner, I live and breathe my business. The

biggest personal challenge that my family and I have overcome was as above the big crash. Having to tell friends that you can no longer employ them was tough, on top of that we had to try and maintain a functioning business. Not a pleasant time at all. I think this is probably why I work alone now.

Do you have any concerns for the future of the industry?

I have a few concerns for the future of the industry. I think the most important is how to address the lack of people coming into the industry. I think this is mainly due to the government making it difficult at every turn to employ a young person. I think one way around this would be for the government to employ them, pay them etc. and organise work placements with companies, this would alleviate any paperwork and bureaucracy for the firms in question.

Another concern is Health and Safety. I think at times its gone too far becoming Health and Safety for Health and Safety’s sake! I believe that common sense should prevail where possible. The question I always ask when talking to a H&S inspector is “when are we safe enough”? It’s an emotive subject that sometimes produces more problems than it solves in my opinion.

What do you want to be doing in 1 year/5 years/10 years?

The same really for the next 6 years at which point I hope to retire.

Why did you join the BiKBBI and how long have you been a member?

I enrolled with the BiKBBI in January 2018 as a fitter for Wren

Why should installers consider being a part of the BiKBBI?

I imagine that any fitter, either large scale or sole trader that doesn’t get their work from large contracts could use the BiKBBI as an effective tool giving to reassure and give customers confidence in their chosen fitter.

If you were a youth worker, would you recommend your career to young people?

I would recommend kitchen installation as a long-term career choice. Once you have undergone your training, it’s with you for life. People will always need kitchens so there is a long-term requirement for professional people to fit them.

What would I change about the industry?

This is a difficult question to answer, I guess everyone has something that annoys them, but overall, I like the way the trade works, it has come a long way in the twenty odd years that I have been fitting especially in the appreciation of the importance of the customer experience.

Have you a family?

I have been married to my wife Sandra for 25 years and we have a 19-year-old daughter who will be going to university shortly. This will trigger a new part to our life where we plan to buy a house in Hungary and take summers off work to fix it up.

What about hobbies?

I have many hobbies; during the summer my wife and I scuba dive and visit places in our caravan. In

the winter, I am fixing up an old MR2 car and I also write books! I once wrote stories for my daughter when she was small, usually about “Emlin, the Welsh one-eyed pirate, scourge of the Chid Sea” - a character we dreamt up together. Just recently I have finished my first novel and published it through Amazon. It’s the first novel in a series Samuel and Michael adventures. The book is called NEGATIVE. Here is a brief synopsis

Dr Bloch kills a patient whilst administering electroshock therapy. As the patient dies their soul leaves their body which the doctor witnesses. Being a scientist and religious man, he determines that he will capture the image with a camera thus proving the existence of god and an afterlife. He enlists the help of Silas Grim a well renowned photographer who unbeknown to him is also a serial killer. Silas suggests a new technique “moving pictures” as a better way of recording a death. The resulting experiments embroil the pair in a hidden world controlled by the Jewish faith, leaving Rabbi Samuel and Rabbi Michael to clean up the mess. The book costs £2.14 on kindle download and £8.99 as a book This is a link to the book.

It has taken me around three and a half years to get to this point. The original idea came from a dream I had about a girl being

chased through a subway in Tel Aviv. No spoilers from that as it doesn’t appear until the second book which I am a third of the way through.

A BLADE IS JUST A BLADE… RIGHT?

In the kbb industry, a one-size-fitsall approach for cutting materials generally leads to increased costs due to wasted labour, a reduction in the quality of your work and possibly, delays from either having to re-order materials or even damaging a machine. All of these create unnecessary frustrations from what should be a relatively simple task.

It’s therefore, essential to use the correct cutting consumable for the project being worked on and taking the time to understand why it this simple task should be an important and productive part of our working lives.

A good example: to cut a material such as cement based board with a clean cut, whilst removing the dust as you cut and ensuring that you are going to get a generous lifespan out of the blade used could be seen as a challenge. Then consider being able to cut within the environment the board is being used and it possible that the task may not seem achievable.

Special power tool manufacturer, Festool, can help solve this challenge as the company understands that cement based materials produce a huge volume of very fine dust when cut which can seriously damage the user’s long term health. Accordingly, Festool designs its cutting products so that dust is captured at source and directed to its extraction outlet, thus greatly reducing any air-borne dust. Its TS55 plunge cut saw, Diamond blade and an M class extractor with a 36mm hose is the perfect solution to cutting cement-based material within the environment in which you are working;

another benefit is that there is less moving of materials.

The TS55 R has a dust chute inside the housing that keeps the dust in line with the hose. This prevents the dust that has been collected from being thrown back to the blade, so the blade can cut efficiently. The Festool diamond blade has 4 ‘teeth’ but is part of the system as it is the same diameter as the other blades including the kerf at 2.2.

It’s important that a consumable like a blade, is made for a machine where the two work in unison and are literally made for each other. If they do, they perform much better, resulting in a higher quality of work and importantly for kbb installers, quicker.

POD KITCHENS AND BATHROOMS WITH MEDITE® TRICOYA® EXTREME

‘Pod’ seems to be a buzzword latching on to multiple room styles at present, none more so than kitchens and bathrooms. Pod kitchens and bathrooms are compact, prefabricated spaces that can be installed quickly and easily in applications where time, money and crucially space needs to be optimized.

These space saving pieces of genius are ideal for buildings that need to utilise every last inch, such as city hotels and student accommodation. Furthermore, considering the rate at which high density housing is being built across the UK, it looks like pods might be here to stay.

In fact, a study by AMA Research recorded a growth of 4% in the UK kitchen and bathroom pods market over the course of 2017, with an 8% increase in market value. This reflects the bigger demand for higher specification pods as they grow in popularity,

64
Kitchens and Bathrooms 

driven by a combination of factors, including standardisation and fast-track construction.

Due to this higher demand, pod kitchens and bathrooms need to be built efficiently while still maintaining a consistently high quality. This means the way in which the material behaves has a massive impact on whether or not it is suited to pod designs. Factors such as machinability come into play here as installers want them ready to simply slot into place as soon as possible.

Finding a material therefore that is easy to machine, lightweight, but also resistant to water and humidity is absolutely essential, but tough to find. However, the introduction of MEDITE® TRICOYA® EXTREME (MTX): the weather resistant MDF board from innovative panel producer MEDITE SMARTPLY meets all the necessary criteria.

Guaranteed to maintain structural integrity despite exposure to water for up to 50 years, this revolutionary MDF panel could provide the key to efficiently manufacturing high quality pod kitchens and bathrooms that will stand the test of time.

With its easy to machine qualities it can easily apply itself to any size and specification, while retaining its unique water-resistant capabilities. MTX has proven itself in the toughest of conditions, successfully lining the insides of showers, as well as outdoor kitchens, and bathrooms. A proprietary process called acetylation has made this wood

fibre panel dramatically resistant to the effects of moisture and fungal decay, both indoors and outdoors.

Thanks to this technology, MTX offers specifiers, designers, contractors and installers a reliable, compliant and sustainably produced alternative resource that is just as versatile, if not more, than other kitchen or bathroom materials.

Peter Clifton, Product Manager for MTX at MEDITE SMARTPLY, commented: “MTX’s standout qualities are its durability, dimensional stability and ability to be used in environments not usually recommended, or sometimes even possible for wood-based panel products.

“Its water-resistant technology is manufactured into the board, so modification of it won’t affect it. Combine that with its easy-tomachine qualities and zero-added formaldehyde and you’ve got a panel that is friendly to work with and will withstand the elements for years to come.

“I feel we are just scraping the surface of what is possible with this ground-breaking material and look forward to seeing more projects realising its potential.”

Able to suit any mood or modern home, MTX is available in the full range of RAL colours, so the only limiting factor is your own imagination. Its water-resistant qualities won’t be affected by the choice of finish, which can range from water-based paints, laminates, foils, melamine papers and much more.

IN THE HEAT OF THE MOMENT

As the trees shed their autumnal leaves and we head towards winter, it’s appropriate for us to explore the UK domestic heating market and evaluate the type of heating solutions being recommended and installed across the modern kitchen and bathroom, alongside key market trends and technologies you and your customers need to be aware of …

Did you know that central heating is installed in 92% of UK homes? Accordingly, this has stimulated a demand for smart heating controls and the introduction of ‘personal home energy management’, as standard.

Premium manufacturers are showing huge development in the improvement of boiler efficiency and this has led to significant opportunities for retro-fit installation where homeowners are upgrading their existing boiler to more fuel-efficient condensing models.

Conventional boiler systems still remain a popular choice with around 40% of UK homeowners operating a non-condensing model, however this only proves that energy-efficient boiler systems remain an area for fundamental growth to open up new opportunities within the replacement market. Not only are condensing boilers

at least 25% more efficient, they are ecological too as they utilise the waste heat in flue gas to preheat the cold water which enters the boiler for greater heat absorption.

But if we listen to the ‘experts’, then a combi-boiler is topping the charts as it is both a high efficient water heater and central heating boiler from one complete unit. Extremely cost-effective and energy-efficient, this type of system will ensure the water is heated instantly, rather than take from a reserve of pre-heated water that requires a lot of storage space and is less economical to run: best suited to homes with two or more bathrooms, and/or a traditional heating and hot water system already installed.

If your customer is connected to the UK national gas network then there is still a wide range of gas boilers to choose from, which include combi, conventional and system boilers and these are notably cheaper to run when compared to oil. However, there is an estimated 4 million households in the UK which are not gas mains connected and so it’s good to know that most oil boilers offer conventional or combi models: although many oilfired combi models will still need an internal hot water tank to supply water. It is also prudent to know that an oil boiler needs a constant supply of oil to operate which is stored in an external tank and typically lasts up to 9 months before needing a refill. Systems like this are

normally fitted in more remote areas where access to a mains gas supply are not viable.

Interestingly, Which? states that 1 in 4 homeowners have reported that they believe the most efficient and cost-effective method of heating their home is simply leaving the heating on and setting the thermostat to a consistent temperature. Unfortunately this is a common misunderstanding as a clever use of controls can actually help your customer cut-down their energy consumption and thus, rising utility bills.

Which? has pinpointed five main types of heating control that can help save your customers money on their heating and predictably, the customer will look to you for this type of advice and guidance. So if you don’t know already, here’s what you need to know about the most favoured heating controls right now: ◆

Room Thermostat – Manual control operation ◆

Thermostatic Radiator Valve ◆

Timer - Regulating time ◆ Programmer - Regulating time and temperature ◆

Smart thermostat - Remote control operation

Smart thermostats are fast becoming a true example of how connected building technology can result in a more efficient energy home and lifestyle: a huge advantage for your customers when installing domestic heating. This said, it's not easy to heat rooms efficiently using manual controls but the good news is intelligent building control makes it

possible to heat the home efficiently. Existing costeffective solutions, such as thermostats that can be controlled via a smartphone, offer convenience as well as potential savings.

However, if your customers really want to be 'smart' when it comes to heating, they can go one step further, for example with the help of room temperature controllers, they will be able

to bring each room to the desired temperature at specific times of the day or night. From the moment their alarm goes off, the automatic control will ensure that the home is heated to a comfortable temperature and can very easily, vary between bathroom, kitchen, bedroom and living spaces. Should the home be empty during the day, smart heating will automatically turn down in order to save energy that

would otherwise be wasted. Additional, functions include lowered temperatures at night, a holiday programme, and a party function to spontaneously extend the heating phase.

If we look at the decorative side of the heating market, then in its heyday, the heated towel rail was typically a chrome plated ladder rail design with straight rails and basic functionality and now, present-day heating solutions have become much more than an essential home accessory that can warm and dry your customer’s towels.

Instead, combination towel warmer radiators that serve as a towel dryer and space heater are now standard fare, alongside sculptural radiators, multipurpose designs with mirrors or pullout shelving, smart controls for remote operation and bespoke services where you can meet exact requirements like size, finish, material, style and design for your customer.

Leading heating specialist manufacturers are constantly pushing the boundaries so you can offer the best heating solutions for your customers. This has certainly transformed what was once a standard installation into a specialty, so it’s great to see UK manufacturers offering such a wide variety of options to give you that point of difference.

New technologies are also elevating the latest radiator and towel warmer designs into a luxury purchase, with premium models offering features such as concealed valves and adjustable fixings for practical placement and maximum user convenience. However, winning the trust of a client is essential because heating a home requires investment. If the client is price led, it might be worth discussing radiators with eco-features that offer greater performance and energy efficiency. Green credentials are a factor, and

it is definitely worth noting that some of the more technical characteristics can certainly be translated into unique selling points to help you close a new [or repeat] customer.

There are many benefits to recommending an electric radiator or towel warmer to your customers. Firstly, they are easy to install being designed to work as a completely independent unit to the home’s heating system and secondly, they allow freedom of installation so you don’t have to compromise on design and performance.

Helping to conserve the environment by minimizing energy use, water consumption and economic to run: some models only use the equivalent of two 60 watt light bulbs. Removing the risk of creating a breeding ground for mould and mildew, electric radiators and towel warmers in a bathroom will reduce humidity to create a more hygienic and comfortable space.

Opting for sleek and slender wall-mounted heating solutions that have a small footprint will maximise available space, whilst still providing the option to dry towels and even heat a room: if a modest cloakroom or en suite. Typically heating designs which are multi-functional, perhaps, with extra storage or thermostatically controlled, are becoming more popular as trends are showing the homeowner wants more from a heating solution, than just mere heat.

Premium manufacturers are designing models with added value features like a choice of three programmes that allow activation in the morning, evening or both, or perhaps moveable vents to direct hot air where it’s needed most. Also if the room suddenly becomes cold, most models will have feature a ‘Boost’ function so your customer will get, on average, up to two hours of drying and heating: whenever they need it!

SCRUB UP IN STYLE

There are plenty of factors to consider when choosing an electric shower. Dan Louder, Product Manager at Aqualisa, gives installers a reminder of the important features their customers should look out for when helping them with their decision.

Electric showers are an excellent solution for households where hot water created by the boiler is in short supply, or for extensions, loft conversations or other places that the plumbing system may struggle to reach. This is because electric showers heat cold water by sending an electric current through a heating element in a sealed unit.

Completely separate from a hotwater system, electric showers are always ready to use even if the hot water is switched off. However, while some electric showers provide fast-flowing water, others are not so successful. This could be due to a variety of reasons – for some, turning on another tap in the home could cause the pressure to decrease, providing little more than a trickle.

As such, it’s important to know what to consider to ensure a satisfying shower, every single time.

POWER RATING

Each model of electric shower is categorized by a power rating in kilowatts (kW). A higher kilowatt shower such as a 10kW,

for example, can heat up larger volumes of water than an 8.5kW electric shower. However, it should be noted that the higher kilowatt the shower, the more energy it uses, so energy bills could increase.

PHASED SHUTDOWN

Certain areas of the UK are more prone to limescale build up due to being hard water areas. When hard water evaporates, the minerals left behind solidify and leave a deposit of calcium carbonate and residue. As this residue accumulates, it can cause blockages, restrict the flow of water and are also unsightly. This also makes the system less energy efficient, which can have an impact on bills.

As such, an electric shower that implements a phased shutdown feature such as the Aqualisa Quartz™ will briefly run cold water through the system after the shower is turned off – which will stave off the limescale build up as it rids the system of the hard hot water.

In addition, the phased shutdown is also a safety feature. Depositing cold water into the system at the end of the shower ensures that the next user is not at risk from a blast of hot water.

EASE OF INSTALLATION

Tell your customers that electric showers are extremely straight forward to install, and will cost them less in labour and materials

as the plumbing only needs to reach a mains cold water supply. Certified electricians and kbb installers who are accredited are required for the electrical circuit and safety installation, as the electrical circuit needs to be properly sealed to prevent water from getting into the system.

PRICE

Prices vary widely across the electric shower range – however, manufacturers such as Aqualisa provide a range of options to suit a variety of style and budget requirements. The Aqualisa Lumi™ is the ultimate in luxury, with an ultra-modern finish, while the Quartz™ range is a perfect collection for more budget friendly options.

It may sound like I am stating the obvious to a professional kbb installer but it never hurts to send a reminder that an electric shower provides a host of benefits for the homeowner, as it doesn’t use precious stored hot water– especially handy in a large household whilst saving labour costs on installation.

By imparting knowledge to the customer so that they properly understand what features suit which property, installers can be assured that the end-user (their customer) will not only be assured of a great shower every day but understand and feel comfortable that they made the right choice. www.aqualisa.co.uk

Carron Phoenix has made three colourful additions to its Dante Pull-Out tap range, with new options of White, Grey and Red to complement the original Black. The material mix of the matt silicone colour contrasting with polished chrome offers a fashionable, urban aesthetic combined with the functionality of a professional style catering tap.

The Dante Pull-Out’s elegant swan neck, twinlever design suits a wide range of kitchen styles. At 477mm high, it has the stature and poise to create an interesting design feature in any modern kitchen.

The spout has a reach of 195mm and pivots 180°, so is ideal for use with multi-bowl sinks. It features a flexible hose that offers a directional spray useful for rinsing, washing and filling pots before slotting easily back into its magnetic holder.

When the water is dispensed, the tap’s perlator mixes air into it to give it a ‘champagne-like’ flow. It operates on a minimum 0.5 bar pressure, so is suitable for both combination boiler and most gravity fed water systems.

The new Dante Pull-Out taps are available now and guaranteed for five years.

Product designers define this range as„a true expression of leading-edge design where a square becomes a circle, subsequently, the new Gira Studio Design Line range will awaken the static nature of a bare wall to elevate a space to new degrees of form and function.“

Available in black and white Glass, Gira Studio provides installers with the opportunity to emphasise

its design through colour to contrast nicely with a white or understated kitchen for instance. Different combinations can be used for example, a one-colour solution where both the round frame and square switch are in the same finish, or conversly create a twotone effect with white on black or black on white, let your customer decide, they will enjoy making the choice.

Gira Studio with new Black or White colour application is available in three installation variants: 1-gang Flush Mounted, 1-3 gang Flush Mounted and also Surface Mounted which works beautifully in

urban, loft style apartments. For the ‘modernists’, Gira recommends Studio Flush Mounted: a contemporary design with sleek, ultramodern attributes that is accentuated through the lustrous glass cover frame.

In contrast, Gira suggests that its new Studio Surface Mounted will appeal to more traditional room designs as its period-style design takes it inspiration from the historically round dome light switches that were so popular in the early 20th century.

Mark Booth, Managing Director at Gira UK Ltd, comments “Our aim is to continue designing and

6 WAYS TO ACHIEVE A WORK-LIFE BALANCE

As a business owner, it’s all too easy to let your drive and passion for success overtake every area of your life, letting family commitments slide away or relationships with friends slip by. Vickie Nickolls of Interior Therapy knows this scenario all too well. “I started my business in order to spend more time with my daughter, but I found I was spending less precious time with her while I caught up with emails. I knew something had to change.” So how do you find that balance of freedom and fulfilment while ensuring your business continues to prosper?

Everyone’s idea of a work-life balance will be different. You might crave more time to spend with family and friends, or maybe time to pursue a hobby or activity. Whatever your ideal goal, the processes of achieving it are the same. Follow these handy hints and we guarantee you’ll find time to enjoy life outside of work in meaningful ways.

MAKE THIS ELUSIVE CONCEPT AN EVERYDAY REALITY BY FOLLOWING
HANDY TIPS FROM
FOR
RENOVATION AND
...

1. Set yourself a daily schedule and stick to it

To keep your work separate from your personal life, it’s important to set out a work schedule so that you and your family are clear on the days and times you are working. If you stick to this schedule, you’ll have a better sense of balance between your work and your personal life. Working all day and night to make your business a success will only lead to burnout, so it pays to take set breaks that will help you refuel and recharge. You should also schedule longer breaks, such as holidays with family and friends (and preferably off the grid), so you can properly relax without work distractions. Get used to booking holidays a long way in advance so you can find cover or make up the time beforehand.

2. Forget multitasking

Get into the habit of putting your phone away or closing the laptop once your work hours are complete. This way you can spend nonwork hours doing the things you enjoy. Try focusing on one thing at a time, whether that’s work, having a chat with a friend or a special family meal time and don’t try to multitask by checking emails or making calls at the same time. Your family and friends won’t appreciate your head in your smartphone when you’re meant to be spending time with them. Ensure you are fully present in the one thing you are doing and you’ll reap the benefits.

3. Become an expert at time management

For the ideal work-life balance, you’ll spend half the day working and the rest in leisure time, so becoming super-productive during your scheduled hours of work is crucial. Business coach Gill Kerr suggests being precious with your time will make you more efficient. “Divide you day into time blocks for different activities, so your calendar doesn’t get filled with conference calls or meetings. Always time block the start of the day to work on your daily plan, and then at the end of the day to check you have achieved it.” Compile a to-do list in order of importance so you have a target for each day, however be realistic with your goals. An unfulfilled list each day could frustrate you and knock your confidence, while a completed list will encourage you to sign off for the day and enjoy some downtime.

Business Advice from Houzz 

4. Minimise distractions so you can get the work done

Minimise distractions as much as possible so that you maximise your productivity. If you work at home, create a sensible home office away from family chaos and piles of washing. Ban visits to social media sites unless it’s part of your work, as we all know how time-stealing they can be. It’s also an idea to only check personal emails and text messages during breaks so you don’t stray from your task list. “Working from home is a lovely thing to do but if you set too many parameters and rules then you can negate the whole point of working from home in the first place,” says lifestyle blogger Maxine Briggs. “If you have lots of non-work chores piling up, set aside proper time to do these in one go – that way you can feel focused on your work.”

5. Learn when it’s right to say no

Take measures to protect your time and energy so you can focus it on specific tasks. If you work outside the traditional office setting, your availability can be a little vague and therefore demands on your time may be unreasonable. “When an unexpected deadline arrives, I would consider who it has come from and whether it’s possible to discuss any flexibility. Discuss when you could complete the task and if there’s anyone who could help in the meantime,” says Kerr. On the other hand, Briggs thinks: “It’s perfectly fine to ask yourself if this extra work or attending an event will be beneficial. Imagine you have to justify extra commitments to a boss – if you can’t, then don’t do it.”

6. Free up more time by delegating tasks

Whether it’s your accounts, admin or marketing, there’s always a task that’s way down on the favourite list, yet it needs to be done.

Delegating the tasks that take up precious time will be a weight off your shoulders and you’ll be able to focus on the things you’re good at. It’s all about getting the best from your working hours so you have more time for personal pursuits. A healthy balance of both will ultimately make your business more successful and your lifestyle a fulfilled one.

IT’S A BATTLEFIELD OUT THERE

For tradesmen, keeping the work flowing from one month to the next can be a constant worry. Our research indicates that when you’re out on the battlefield trying to win your next job, you’ll need to take cover – insurance cover.

We recently conducted a survey of 2,000 consumers and 320 tradesmen* to explore their views on the industry, and our findings illustrate just how important it is for trade professionals to have insurance.

help you to land more projects. Some customers, such as local councils, may refuse to have you work for them if you don’t have public liability insurance, while the Citizens Advice Bureau advises consumers:

“It’s worth asking contractors if they have insurance to cover you and them if someone’s hurt or property is damaged (e.g. your home or your neighbour’s). Ask to see insurance policies and check they don’t run out before the work will be finished.”

As well as protecting you from expensive claims, having proper cover could also help you to land more projects. Some customers, such as local councils, may refuse to have you work for them if you don’t have public liability insurance

*Based on an AXA Direct

Business Insurance survey of 2000 consumers and 320 tradesmen in the UK conducted in November 2015

According to our research: 58% of customers think ‘having insurance’ is a characteristic of a reliable tradesman, while 55% agree that lack of cover might even make them suspicious.

58% of tradesmen said customers ask if they have insurance.

43% of customers check whether a tradesman has insurance. Incidentally, insurance is the third most-checked item (after references and work guarantees).

So with insurance on the minds of your potential customers, being covered could mean more than just peace of mind – it could protect your livelihood.

Impact of insurance

Even the best tradesmen experience mishaps, and sometimes these can result in property damage or accidental injury. Without public liability insurance, you could bear the brunt of legal liability running into the thousands, covering things like legal fees, NHS hospital costs and compensation claims.

As well as protecting you from expensive claims, having proper cover could also

According to our survey, 83% of tradesmen already have public liability insurance. However, of those who didn’t, the reasons were:

35% said they didn’t think they need it; and 26% said they’ve never been asked for it before.

However, with almost half the consumers we surveyed stating that they do check for insurance, it seems likely that the number of tradesmen who have ‘never been asked’ for proof of cover will decline in future. And while public liability insurance isn’t a legal requirement, it’s still essential for tradesmen keen to avoid forking out for accident claims from their own pockets.

Share your views

Over half of the customers in our research said they are suspicious of tradespeople who don’t have public liability insurance, but what’s your experience? Have you ever been asked to get covered before being awarded a job? Or has insurance never been an ingredient in your success?

FIT AND FORGET DELIVERS

VitrA reports that its innovative Fit and Forget campaign, designed to highlight the design features of VitrA’s concealed cistern frames has seen sales double year on year.

VitrA is a major supplier of wallhung sanitaryware and frames that make installation fast and straightforward. To encourage retailers to make greater use of VitrA concealed frames, the company launched its Fit and Forget campaign earlier this year.

“We offer an extensive range of wall-hung WC’s from our inhouse design team and from international designers that have proven consumer appeal,” says VitrA Marketing Manager Margaret Talbot. “But there is consumer unfamiliarity around the benefits of wall-hung WC’s and a reluctance by retailers to consider alternative manufacturers. Selected retailers were chosen to receive a direct mail package which included an introduction letter and elegant presentation box containing the award-winning complementary Sirius Flush Plate, 8 flush plate spec cards, incentive information, flyers and a poster for the installer promotion that ran alongside the retailer incentive.

Retailers that received the direct mail pack could claim a free frame and as a further incentive VitrA offered a £10 Love2Shop voucher for every frame purchased. One particularly successful aspect of the campaign was giving retailers the opportunity to host an installer breakfast morning to introduce their fitters to VitrA frames. Installers who attended a breakfast morning were able to claim a free frame, as well as having the opportunity to see a range of wall-hung frames and flush plates and receive some top tips for quick and easy installation.

“Every retailer really appreciated the level of support we offered with this campaign,” says Darren Paxford, Sales Manager. “The results speak for themselves, the Fit and Forget campaign does exactly what it says as you really can fit a VitrA frame without worrying about potential future problems.

The campaign highlighted the many advantages of our frame system. We know that historically providing access has been a concern for installers, so our frames have a panel gap on the body and an easy to remove flush plate that provides optimum opening space to access the cistern for servicing or repairs. Every one of our frames is WRAS approved and as more and more customers seek a reduced flush volume it is great that we can provide

frames that operate at 3/6 litres and 2/5.4 litres. This reduced volume results in a 70 percent reduction in water consumption. Our frames come with up to eight fixation points, giving the customer confidence in the strength of the product and there is an excellent range of flush plate designs including the VitrA Sirius mechanical flush plate that won an iF product design award.”

TAX & ACCOUNTANCY TIPS

Since the last report, the weather certainly seems to have a cooled and as I write, we are awaiting news of proposed tax changes in the November Budget but in the meantime here’s some tips and advice that will keep you informed:

The Tax Gap

The tax gap is the amount of tax that the government does not receive, compared to that which it would expect to recover. HMR&C have indicated that the Tax Gap for 16/17 (latest figures available) has fallen to its lowest level in 5 years, at 5.7%. The reasons suggested are due to HMR&C’s work to help taxpayers get things right from the start, and the department’s sustained efforts to tackle evasion and avoidance. Whatever the reasons, 5.7% does not seem a great loss but in actual monetary terms this equated to tens of billions of pounds including:

•small businesses made up the largest proportion of unpaid tax by taxpayer group at £13.7 billion

•taxpayer errors and failure to take reasonable care made up £9.2 billion of unpaid taxes by behaviour, while criminal attacks made up £5.4 billion

•income tax, national insurance contributions and capital gains tax made up the largest proportion of the tax gap by tax type at £7.9 billion for 2016/17; equivalent to 16.4% of selfassessment liabilities.

Married Couples

Marriage Allowance HMRC has highlighted that three million UK couples have already taken advantage of Marriage Allowance but a million more are still eligible for the tax break. The Marriage Allowance allows certain couples, where neither pay tax at more than the basic rate, to transfer 10% of their unused personal allowance to their spouse or civil partner, reducing their tax bill by up to £238 a year in 2018/19. The allowance was introduced in 2015 and it is possible to backdate the claim to earlier tax years. Please contact your tax advisor if you consider that you may qualify but have not applied.

Stamp Duty Cut

According to the latest statistics 121,500 firsttime buyers have saved a total of £284m following the introduction of a relief for first-time buyers under the Stamp Duty Land Tax rules which apply in England and Northern Ireland. Over the next five years, it is estimated that this relief, part of the UK government's housing policy will help over 1 million people getting onto the housing ladder. First-time buyers purchasing homes of £300,000 and under pay no stamp duty at all, and those who bought properties of up to £500,000 will also have benefitted from a stamp duty cut.

TOOL THEFT Part two!

96
Security Matters
—————

Back in the spring issue of The Installer magazine we published an in-depth article about the rise of tool thefts from commercial vehicles and the importance, in fact necessity of taking suitable measures to protect yourself against this horrible crime.

Since the publication of our article, Volkswagen has revealed that research it has recently undertook demonstrated that tool thefts from commercial vehicles has hit a record high. In fact, tool theft from vans has risen by 15% in the last three years, (according to research by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles)!

To put some kind of figure on this, police forces from across the UK have recorded over 64,000 cases of theft from commercial vehicles since April 2015, with a record 23,859 incidents in 2017/18!

The Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles research, via a Freedom of Information request, reveal that the total cost of equipment stolen from vans is estimated at more than £46 million over the last three years! The research further revealed that September is when van drivers should be most vigilant, with over 2,000 cases recorded across the UK in September 2017 alone and with this issue being published in October it remains a time when van owners should be vigilant.

With its vast population and housing the most businesses you will not be surprised to learn that Central London is the most effected with the Metropolitan Police recording over 8,000 cases a year, worth an average of £11 million! Somewhat surprisingly, Northumbria (4,000 reports a year) and

West Yorkshire (1,000) were second and third. Humberside police recorded the biggest rise over the three years, with incidents up by over a whopping 1,000%.

Remember, the cost of tool theft to businesses is greater than having to replacement equipment as kbb installers and other tradesmen are often unable to work while vans are restocked and locks repaired. Downtime costs companies an estimated £550 a day per van, according to Volkswagen.

Trevor Hodgson-Phillips, Head of Service and Parts at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, said: “These findings are startling, as it shows the problem is only getting worse right across the UK. Tool theft costs owner drivers and businesses millions of pounds each year in insurance claims and downtime.”

ideally keeping a record of serial numbers and receipts as it gives the insurer very clear details of exactly what tools you owned if you need to make a claim.” He added. “This could by-pass a lot of the form-filling and speed up the claims process, which is vital if you are unable to work properly due to the loss of your tools.

98
HERE IS THE BiKBBI’S TOP 10 TIPS TO HELP PROTECT YOURSELVES: • Lock your van at all times • Install security lighting and CCTV where the van is parked • Use a Thatcham-approved alarm or buy/lease a van with these already fitted • Don’t leave equipment in the van overnight • Fit stronger locks, or get a van with stronger locks • Keep tools inside a lockable toolbox and/or use extra locks to secure tools and toolboxes inside the van • Use tracking technology to increase the chance of a stolen van being recovered • Use extra security devices in the cab, such as OBD and ignition security locks • Mark van and tools with security markings that may deter thieves and enable recovery of stolen goods
Final word goes to UIB Group’s Christopher Bates whose business provides tailor-made insurance packages for the BiKBBI and its membership, who says, “Obviously you need to make sure that your insurance policy covers not just your van but its contents too, to give you peace of mind. But other practical things you can do is make a simple inventory of the tools you have, and Make sure you have the right insurance cover and keep a registry of your tools to help speed up a claim

INSTALLATION OPPORTUNITIES

Back in the spring issue of the installer we announced an initiative, created by the BiKBBI, called Project Harvest, in response to the government sanctioned ‘modernise or die’ Farmer report.

Project Harvest, is a proposal from the organisation to its Retail Installation Standards Partners, outlining plans for a collaborative approach to installer recruitment within the KBB industry.

Goals & objectives

The objective of Harvest is to create an online registry for installers to promote the generic benefits of working with retailers, removing any negative perception barriers. The online portal will then harvest installer details to share with those retailers participating in the project.

So, this is the first step in the Project Harvest cycle. The Installer Magazine is providing a platform for some of the institute’s Installation Standards Partners to advertise and attract BiKBBI member installers thus acting as a conduit and creating opportunities for both partners and installer members to benefit from their involvement with the institute.

Disclaimer:

• The following recruitment pages comprises content supplied solely by the businesses who are advertising. The copy provided do not represent the thoughts of the BiKBBI or anyone connected with it and therefore cannot be held responsible for anything factually incorrect. The institute and the magazines are just facilitators in bringing BiKBBI supporting businesses and installers together for a common purpose and has no vested interest in anyone other than BiKBBI member installers.

GETTING INSTALLATION RIGHT THE FIRST TIME CAN PREVENT LONG-TERM CONSEQUENCES

be considered as potential defect issues. Careful positioning of backlighting or unusual viewing angles (crouching or kneeling, etc) would not be considered reasonable criteria for identifying a visual defect.

This is a reasonable approach to issues affecting appearance, but there may be imperfections that are not visible to the customer but which could affect the appearance, suitability of performance of the furniture, and these may not be apparent until things go wrong.

The lady suggested “Let’s sit down first so I can go through my list of defects and then you can check each one before we move on to the next.”

We sat down and I asked “Do you mean the list you have already sent me? I can work through that as I do my inspection, but my report must be independent and can only include the issues I consider to be wrong.”

I was a little surprised and pleased when she agreed to let me examine the fitted bedroom by myself with no supervision or interference. I was able to record this in my report, along with my (shorter) list of the issues that I had found unacceptable. Perhaps the presence of some genuine

faults had made her look more closely, more obsessively; or perhaps her expectations were unrealistic when you consider that installing furniture relies on hand and eye skills even when tools are being used.

We don’t have a British Standard Code of Practice for fitted furniture installations, but consider this statement taken from BS 8201; 2011 Code of practice for installation of flooring of wood and wood-based panels):

When completed, floors should be inspected from a normal viewing position either standing or seated…only those features which are immediately obvious to any independent party should

I’ve been called in to look at wall cabinets which fell off the wall and injured an elderly customer, damaged worktops which had blown due to moisture ingress at the sink and joints, and stone worktops which had caused the poorly fitted base units to droop by more than 5cm. In each case the installation work had been done years before, but the problems were clearly the fault of the installer in each case.

We may offer a guarantee on our workmanship for a limited time (for example, one year), but if we’ve done, or omitted to do, something that fails even after our ‘guarantee period’ is over we may still be liable for the consequences.

‘MORE THAN JUST KITCHEN FURNITURE’ WITH ROTPUNKT

Rotpunkt’s new Furniture Collections for 2018 will overcome any design hurdles that may be encountered when working with an open-plan kitchen living scheme.

Rotpunkt assists synchronisation as its kitchen doors will blend with other areas of open-plan room schemes, for example, a TV Entertainment Unit in the living area, can use common doors to a display cabinet for convenient dining or even a banquet window seat to create an extra place to sit, not forgetting the kitchen of course.

Matt Phillips, Head of UK Operations, Rotpunkt UK says “Should an installer get involved in advising his/ her customer about furnishing an open plan home, as they sometimes do, its important to try and select nonconflicting materials, colours and finishes, as this will provide a cohesive look that is able to transcend from room to room. This level of interconnection is an inherent feature of open plan living and I believe this is why the kitchen remains the cornerstone of any modern home.”

Rotpunkt’s new Metal Line in Black and Grey, or new Class furniture will let you blur the boundaries between function, leisure and aesthetic without needing to define the room itself. New City laminate furniture in Grey Oak and Nature Oak will also serve you well as the new laser-edged doors have been designed to accommodate a run of drawers. So, if you need to conceal a standard height built-in appliance like a dishwasher or washing machine, then now you can, as well as minimise noise pollution when operational and trying to watch TV!
