Buying appliances and home furnishings presents consumers with more choices than in the past. Advancements in design and technology allow customers to purchase items more closely suited to their needs and preferences but at the same time can make the buying process more daunting through the sheer number of alternatives available. Refrigerators come with options for French and side-by-side doors, top and bottom freezer options as well as counter-depth and under-the-counter configurations. Washers and dryers come in top and front-loading options as well as combination units. Ranges and stovetops are available in various finishes and designs and can be single or combination units. Furniture nowadays comes in an entire spectrum of colors, fabrics and coverings and in a wide array of configurations.

Alton Refrigeration & Home Furnishings has a 26,000 square foot showroom and provides not only an extensive selection of appliances and home furnishings but also the expertise to help guide customers through their decision-making process. They can step clientele through design and feature options as well as help them understand price and functionality tradeoffs in order to arrive at the right decision for the items they purchase for their homes.

Alton Refrigeration began in 1931 on Broadway in Alton. In 1946, Bill Crane began working at the store and purchased the business in 1952. A lifetime of hard work and dedication to their customers has led to success for the business ever since. In the 1970s and 1980s, the company underwent changes to keep up with the times and the name was changed to Alton Refrigeration & Home Furnishings. Current owner Bill Crane is the son of the Bill Crane who purchased the store in 1946. The current owner’s sons,

Gary and John Crane, assist with day-do-day operations. After expanding and evolving over many years, the business was moved from Broadway to its present location on Homer Adams Parkway in 2007. John notes the move brought the business to an additional demographic of customers who had not been familiar with it previously.

The store offers an extensive selection of brands and products across a broad range of appliances and home furnishings. They carry appliance manufacturers such as GE, Amana, Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Maytag, Hotpoint and Beko along with other brands in numerous models, styles, sizes and colors. Refrigerators, freezers,

ranges, microwaves, wall ovens and accessories and cleaners are also stocked.

outdoor and patio items. Sofas, sectionals and recliners as well as tables and living room sets are available. Beds, mattresses and bedding can also be purchased in various styles and price ranges. Items come with factory warranties and extended warranties can also be purchased. “We service what we sell and our customer service is one of the things that sets us apart,” says John. “We strive to exceed our customers’ expectations,” notes Gary. John adds, “We have generations of customers and they shop here because of how we take care of them.”

They note the service technicians they use are employed by Alton Refrigeration & Home Furnishings and that customers are not just handed off to a national call center if service is needed. They also note both their sales and technical personnel undergo extensive and ongoing training to stay abreast of current designs and technology. “It’s a continual learning process,” says Gary. “We learn something new every day.”

The brothers note the variety of items the store carries is one of its differentiators. “We carry affordable quality in price points to fit anyone’s budget,” says Gary. John points out Whirlpool provides models ranging from Amana to KitchenAid, all of it solid quality but at a range of prices and features which offer customers a choice.

The store carries Flexsteel, homestyles and La-ZBoy furniture. Inventory includes bedroom, dining room, living room and home office as well as

The Cranes point out that extensive financing options are available. They also note they are always looking for good people for sales, technical and warehouse positions. Jobs available are listed on their web site under the Career Opportunities tab.

Their website offers an extensive list of the company’s inventory along with pictures and pricing information. It also has information about services and financing. The Big Z marks 75th anniversary in 2023

Seventy-five years ago this February there was something new in the air in the Alton area. You couldn’t see it or smell it. But you could hear it if you had an AM radio receiver.

At the end of World War II, commercial radio was a quartercentury old. Most of the initial stations were regional signals, covering vast areas and providing national news and entertainment programming for the masses. But following the war a plethora of local stations were being granted licenses by the Federal Communications Commission.

As such it was that in February of 1948 the Alton area welcomed its very own local signal when WOKZ 1570 AM (now WBGZ) signed on from studios at the Hotel Stratford in Downtown Alton.

Robert C. Goshorn, publisher of the Jefferson City, MO newspaper and founder of Capital Broadcasting Company, along with his partner, R.L. Rose began the process of bringing local radio to Alton in 1946 when they formed Illinois Alton Broadcasting Company. In early 1948 they were granted a construction permit to build a 1000 watt AM radio station to serve Alton and surrounding communities. The process culminated in WOKZ signing on the air in February of 1948. The new station generated a great deal of excitement and an estimated 2000 people showed up at an open house at the new studios shortly after the station took to the airwaves.

Early programming consisted of live in-studio performances by local musicians. Local news was gathered and disseminated. And local dignitaries were interviewed. It was all about being local, as the popular national programs emanating from New York and distributed by the various networks were available through the well-established St. Louis radio stations. What set the new

WOKZ apart was its focus on local happenings.

The Illinois Alton Broadcasting Company ran the station for just a matter of months, selling to North Shore Broadcasting out of Louisiana which formed a subsidiary, WOKZ, Inc. But in December of 1953, a local man, Edward N. Palen, bought WOKZ and the station has been under local ownership ever since.

Palen was an astute broadcaster, assembling a talented team that would help establish the station as a staple of the community.

Among those recruited by Palen was Nick Bono, who served as chief engineer and would later become part of the station’s ownership group. Clyde Wiseman came aboard, initially as program director, then as news director. He would later be elected mayor of Alton. Another Palen hire was a local high school kid by the name of Lane Venardos who started as a disc jockey. Later, he would move on to WBBM in Chicago before moving to New York as a producer of the CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite. In the 80s, Venardos was named Dan Rather’s executive producer for the CBS Evening News, and later still the vice president of news for CBS.

than 25-year run as a popular talk show host.

It was seven years later, in the fall of 1964, that Walters, and two co-workers, Walter Brink and Nick Bono, would form Morrell Broadcasting Company and purchase WOKZ from Palen. Brink would serve as GM, Bono remained chief engineer, and Walters continued in sales and as host of her daily talk show. The new owners soon added a sister station to WOKZ. In January 1967, WOKZFM signed on the air. Much of the day it was a simulcast of the AM programming, but the FM was able to stay on the air after sundown when the AM was required to sign off. Thus, WOKZ became the home of local high school sports play-byplay and Fighting Illini broadcasts. Behind the mic for many of those early high school broadcasts was an East Alton native and SIUE graduate, Dewayne Staats, who went on to a long career as an MLB broadcaster and still serves as the TV voice of the Tampa Bay Rays.

and Operations Manager. A significant upgrade was made in 1987 when the FCC authorized the station to broadcast at night. Up until that time it was limited to daytime hours only. The full-time schedule allowed The Big Z to begin a comprehensive schedule of high school sports play-by-play, a feature that had been set aside with the sale of WOKZ-FM in 1979. The Big Z became the voice of five area high schools: Alton High, Marquette, East Alton-Wood River, Roxana, and Civic Memorial. Thousands of high school games have been aired on the Big Z since 1987.

programming and MyMix’s oldies programming are also streamed live at AdvantageNews.com, which is also the website for local news, podcasts, and more.

In 2021, Metroplex acquired Today’s Advantage newspaper and along with the two radio formats and a full portfolio of digital advertising products, Big Z Media has become a full-service marketing and advertising resource for locally owned and operated businesses.

In November of 1957, Palen built new studios just north of Alton on Godfrey Road and moved the station from its original location at the Hotel Stratford. The spacious new studios heralded a new era for the local radio station and it was around this time that Helen Hamer Walters began her more

WOKZ-FM was sold in 1979 to Laclede Communications in St. Louis. WOKZ-AM was sold in 1984 to Metroplex Communications, whose primary stockholders were Bethalto residents Lewis and Charles Dreith and their halfbrother Clyde Jones. The new owners changed the call letters to WBGZ (The Big Z), indicative of a new area for the radio station. Lewis Dreith would serve as General Manager, and his son, Mike Dreith, as News Director

After Mike Dreith moved on to pursue other interests, long-time St. Louis newsman Jim Scanlan came aboard as News Director and Sam Stemm joined the station as Program Director. Stemm was named General Manager in 1990 and changed the programming format to news/talk. Over the course of time, Stemm bought out various members of the Dreith family, becoming majority owner in 2004. Stemm served as GM for 26 years. Nick Darr was named General Manager in 2016 and continues in that role.

WBGZ returned to the FM airwaves when in 2015 a new signal was acquired at 94.3 and the Big Z’s programming was simulcast on both AM and FM. In 2020, Big Z programming moved to 107.1 and 94.3 was repurposed as home to a new oldies station, MyMix 94.3, which is also simulcast on 92.3 FM WIL HD3. The Big Z’s news/talk

What started as WOKZ 75 years ago and has evolved to Big Z Media has boasted local ownership for the past 70 consecutive years with a total of only five general managers over that span of local ownership.

Big Z Media Vice President Nick Darr says, “Local owners and managers, along with dedicated local media specialists, is a key component in the longevity of the organization. Local people serving local businesses and providing reliable and pertinent information to the community is a winning formula that stands the test of time and promises to flourish in the future.”

While the media landscape is much different today than it was in 1948, WOKZ/WBGZ/Big Z Media continues to evolve and adapt and remains relevant despite the everchanging media dynamic. And that’s good news for the community it serves. 3

What’s the deal with maps?

(I’m hearing that in the voice of Jerry Seinfeld)

I love a good map! I remember as a kid, waaaaay back in the early 1980s, I had a stash of maps. Illinois, Missouri, probably one of Kentucky, a U.S. atlas, and my prized map was one of the City of St. Louis. A large, full map of the city that when unfolded was almost as big as my bed. I don’t know who would have ever needed that or used it in the car but it was pretty cool to me! On road trips, I’d collect states I didn’t have, and pass the time in the car looking up unique city names. Fruitland, Missouri; St. Elmo, Illinois; Longs, South Carolina; or how about Jack, Alabama?

That might also explain my enjoyment of the board game

Risk and Axis and Allies. Map-based world conquest!

I also usually had an updated U.S. road atlas, easy gift buying for a dad. Some years, even the spiral bound edition. That continued into married life until they were

TOWN OF THE

harder to find in the stores.

I just have always liked knowing where I’m going, how I’m going to get there and how many ways I can go. Remember when you could go to the website Mapquest and type in your destination and your hometown and BAM, turn by turn directions that you then hand to print out with a map at each turn? The ink companies loved it when you printed them in color too! Mapquest then became a verb… “did you mapquest it?” And later on so did the word Google. How many of you had a Garmin GPS device, which you can still buy I found out while writing this. Then, as smartphones got more sophisticated, map apps were a must! Then voice directions on the app, and now digital displays in your dashboard. It’s all good until, on one trip, you got bad directions on a road to nowhere and wished you had a map to figure out where you were. Or you run into bad cellular coverage.

That happened a few years back while visiting Elephant Rock State Park. Cell service wasn’t the best in south central Missouri and as we left the park, my phone was showing any signal. As we left the park, I had to (believe or not) try to remember how I got there. Road signs helped but I did guess correctly on a few turns until the phone reconnected to directions to get us back to I-55.

A few weeks ago, we took a train trip and I found out there’s a website where you can see all the Amtrak trains in the U.S. and where they are in (mostly).

Imagine my excitement when I discovered Flight Aware a few years ago. How about marinetraffic.com?

Cool and a little scary all at the same time.

I’m not really looking to go back to the days without a map app, but I still like looking at the old-school paper editions. Now all we need is whiteballoon-tracker.com. 3

Day camp registration starts March 6 at TNI

The first day of registration at The Nature Institute for its Discovery

Camps is coming up and organizers want you to be ready when it opens. Space tends to fill quickly. The camps begin the first week of June and run through early August.

TNI Director of Education Lauren Scull says camp is for kids ages 3-14, “The first week of camp we only have our preschoolers and this is the first year we are offering a full day for them rather than just a half-day. We’ll still have the half-day option, but fullday will be an option too.”

All the other age groups

will follow and they expect another strong turnout for the middle school camps which were very popular last year.

Pre-registration for TNI members will open on March 6, with non-members allowed to register beginning March 10. Registration has gone to an all-online process. 3 thenatureinstitute.org

FRAY BEYOND THE

More on the grand dame of Alton radio

Last month in this space

I shared a profile of Helen Hamer Walters, who hosted a daily talk show on WOKZ (now WBGZ) for nearly 25 years, ending with her retirement in 1984. I mentioned in the post-script that I am related to Helen and also worked with her at WOKZ for a couple of years.

Helen and my paternal grandmother were first cousins. Grandma was named for Helen’s mother, both growing up Lydia Rain. Helen and grandma were the same age, and grandma thought Helen was a big deal. So, when I was about 10 years old, grandma dragged me on several occasions to Helen’s Breakfast Club shows at Lewis and Clark restaurant, across from Eastgate Plaza.

I was not impressed with the old lady behind the mic (I was 10, Helen was in her 50s), who was describing for her radio audience the latest fashions from Phoebe Goldberg’s or Leader’s. I was mesmerized, instead, by the hypnotic dance of the lighted VU meters on the remote radio mixers and the actions of the man who was adjusting the dials as the program progressed. Little could that 10-year-old Sam Stemm imagine that less than 15 years later he would be a co-worker with that announcer, Helen Hamer Walters, and that broadcast engineer, Nick Bono.

Helen’s daughter Irene recently share a humorous incident regarding Helen’s breakfast club show. One day during the fashion show at the restaurant a model was showing a coat. When she opened the coat to show its lining to the audience, it

became obvious that during her last clothing change the model had neglected to put on a blouse. There the model stood in front of the breakfast club audience, displaying the coat’s lining while wearing only a bra as a top. Helen, however, was unfazed, describing for her radio audience the beautiful coat with no mention of the wardrobe malfunction. Apparently that incident didn’t occur when I was there with grandma. I would have remembered that!

My first paid radio gig was at WOKZ in 1978. It was my first day on the job and I was a nervous wreck. I reported for work at 5am and by 8:30 my head was spinning. That’s when Helen Hamer Walters walked into the studio and closed the door behind her. Without ceremony she said, “Don’t tell anybody we’re related.”

I was mortified. I remember thinking I had embarrassed myself so badly that she was rejecting our status as distant cousins. Well, as it turns out, as she went on to explain, the company had an anti-nepotism policy and she didn’t want me to sabotage myself by pointing out our shared lineage. Thus began a two year stint of working with Helen daily late in her career and early in mine.

I eventually went on to other endeavors before returning to the radio station three years after Helen’s retirement, and was named GM in 1990, the year Helen died. Subsequently I became the station owner. I often wonder what Helen would have thought of all of that. I’d like to think maybe she would even admit to being related to me. 3

SECRET DINER

Creative burgers are top notch

There’s nothing like a good burger and in the immortal words of Samuel L. Jackson, this joint in western Madison County certainly has a tasty burger.

The restaurant sits along a busy street in town with street parking in the front of the building and a parking lot in the back. You can enter on either side of the establishment.

The large, open dining room features dark wood laminate flooring. High and small tables are sprinkled throughout the spacious dining area with black cushioned chairs. It’s nice and spread out to give patrons a bit of privacy on their visit.

A stage area in the front of the place offers a few more seats with high tables and stools with red cushioned tops. There is also a dinerstyle bar counter toward the back of the dining room, which feeds into the kitchen. Some other features are several TVs hanging on the walls for entertainment, beer signage and Galaga and Ms. Pac-Man arcade games situated on the stage. On my visit they were playing 80s music over the speakers, too. Of course the reason for the visit was my intrigue over these creative burgers, so I was ready to dig in. I went with my parents who were also first-time visitors.

I decided to start us off with an appetizer of guac bites before getting to the main course. If you aren’t familiar with guac bites, they are breaded cocoons filled with piping hot, creamy guacamole inside and they are done very well here. They are served with a sweet chili sauce. They were super tender

and featured a very thin breading encasing the sweet and creamy guac. The sauce made for the perfect companion to travel the sweet and spicy spectrum. As for my main course, I chose the mac and cheesy burger, accompanied by tater tots. It’s just as advertised — an angus beef patty served on a brioche bun and smothered in macaroni and cheese and a heaping helping of bacon bits.

The burger was so incredibly succulent and the brioche bun was super airy and tender. My favorite part of the experience is that none of the tastes were overpowered by another. You got the flavor of the bun, the burger, the bacon and the mac and cheese in every bite.

Other orders at the table included the simply named hamburger, which featured pickle, onion, lettuce and tomato only, the ultimate grilled cheese with American, swiss and pepper jack cheeses as well as a big slab of ham served on sourdough bread and a cup of broccoli cheese soup. There were satisfactory comments on all of it. One cool aspect of this place is they will serve these burgers vegan and/ or gluten free if desired. I

Some other interesting doozies include the Sooo Gouda! with gouda cheese, bacon, onions and garlic aioli, the PB & J Burger with hot pepper strawberry jam, peanut butter and bacon on a burger and the Frito Pie with chili, fritos, fresh jalapenos, onions and cheddar cheese. There are also creative horseshoes, grilled cheese options and an awesome line of hot dogs. I would try it all, but for the purpose of this article I thought the burger was most appropriate. 3

Home cooked meals, super fast

FOOD A FARE PROVIDES HEARTY MEALS IN FIVE MINUTES

There is a saying in the restaurant business that you can have your food fast, affordable or delicious; choose two. You seldom find a place to eat which can provide all three.

Food A Fare strives to be the exception to that rule.

Food A Fare

139 Eastgate Plaza, East Alton 618-300-7123

The restaurant offers a menu of hearty, homecooked meals at affordable prices and generally has them ready in five minutes or less.

Tue-Fri 11am - 7pm Sat 9am-1pm

“Barrett Heating and Cooling is a highly professional, local business. We’ve had them out for yearly maintenance. We recently had some leaking from the basement humidifier and Greg came out same day to fix the issue, which happened to be Christmas Eve. ... This new mother of twins is appreciative of Greg and Steve’s dedication to making the customer experience absolutely phenomenal.”

“Amazing customer service! I placed a work order request on their website and requested help with our air conditioner. Roger called in advance of arrival and as always was friendly and professional. Roger diagnosed my components systematically and explained what he was doing. He had the replacement components on his truck. One hour later and our emergency is over.”

The husband-and-wife team of Mike and Nyla Hollis own and operate Food A Fare, located at Eastgate Plaza in East Alton. They started the restaurant in November of 2021. Mike says that from the start their goal has been to provide delicious, home-cooked meals for people on the go and at a reasonable price. The couple live in the local area and combine the busy events of running their restaurant with the hectic activities of raising their children. They just welcomed their fourth child in January.

They bring a wealth of expertise and business experience to the enterprise. Mike has been involved in the restaurant business for 32 years and is a trained and certified executive chef. He attended culinary school in St. Louis and did extended training in Napa Valley in California. Nyla had a previous career in nursing but also has had experience in the food service industry. When the opportunity came up to open their own restaurant, they made the decision they would both dedicate their efforts to it full time.

The restaurant advertises that it provides hearty, homecooked meals but super fast. “It’s comfort food,” says Mike. “All of the favorites that people knew growing up. The type of food that grandma made.” He says that along with the quality and taste of the food, the differentiator for

the restaurant is that most meals are ready for customers within five minutes.

The menu includes favorites such as chicken pot pie, roasted chicken, Italian beef sandwiches, meatloaf, and chicken and sausage gumbo. Mike says the meals are delicious, satisfying comfort food people normally do not associate with fast food. The choice of soups includes chicken, chicken and rice, and vegetable beef. Caesar and Italian salads are available and side menu items include gumbo, grilled cheese, macaroni and cheese and toasted French bread. Carrots, rice, green beans and tomatoes are also available with meals. He says the pot pie and the meal loaf are particular customer favorites.

Sweets and desserts are available, including apple cobbler and ice cream as well as bread pudding, fruit crisps and cream cake. A children’s menu includes chicken pot pie, meatloaf and beef tips. “It’s a different style than other restaurants,” says Mike. “All of the food is real and homemade. There’s nothing frozen or microwaved or deep fried and there are no added preservatives. Nothing prepackaged.”

He notes a lot of customers simply pick up the food to go. “You can call or order online and we can have it ready in five minutes,” he says. He explains it is a great option for working people in a hurry as well as anyone wanting good food but not wanting to spend a lot of time in a restaurant or in line at a drive-through.

Spacious indoor seating

also accommodates indoor dining at Food A Fare and Mike says the restaurant is popular with retirees and families wanting something more satisfying than typical fast food. He explains the key to being able to provide the food so quickly is he begins cooking four hours before the restaurant opens so the food is freshly prepared and cooked throughout the day.

Mike says the recipes are unique and original, based upon his experience and learning over the past 32 years. “Many of them are things that people have showed me or that I’ve learned over the years, and then I took my own path with it and customized,” he says.

Food A Fare can provide catering upon request. Mike says anyone interested in having a meal catered should get in touch with him and let him know what they are looking for. He can then present them with options. He says most people just stop by and take the food for their event with them but that Food A Fare can also cater on site with advanced notice.

“People usually have an idea of what they want. If they come to me and let me know how many people they are going to have and what their price range is, we can make something work,” he says.

Customers can purchase gifts cards either at the restaurant itself or on their website. Orders can be called in in advance, ordered at the counter or placed on their website. Additional information, including daily specials and pictures of the food options, is available on the business’ Facebook page. 3 foodafare.org

The coffin

I don’t know about you, but I never give any thought to my coffin. Well, not much, anyway. I hope my family doesn’t get carried away and pick an expensive one with all the funeral home bells and whistles. For the life of me—or should I say for the death of me—I don’t know what I would possibly do with bells and whistles after I’m gone. Or, for that matter, what those I leave behind would do with bells and whistles after I’m gone.

A cheap coffin is just fine. In fact, it’s preferable. I was never much into impressing people in this life, and would just as soon not try to impress them with a resting place that will liquidate my life’s savings. I would rather my family hang on to whatever savings I leave behind. Bury me in a cardboard box if you want—if its legal—because I’ve gone on to better things anyway. My wife and I years back bought funeral plots at a cutrate price, and I would prefer the same bargain on a coffin. I don’t want my family to get carried away when I am.

LIFE HESTON ON

I have, in my files, a simple newspaper story I stumbled on a few years back. It began with a quote from one Dr. Jeffrey Piehler. The quote drew my attention to the rest of the story. Dr. Piehler was quoted as saying, “It’s pretty much impossible to feel anger at someone for driving to slowly in front of you in traffic when you’ve just come from sanding your own coffin.”

He had me. I had to read more.

The story explained that Dr. Piehler is dying from cancer. It is certain. He is terminal. So, since he can’t beat it, he thought he’d join it. That may be an oversimplification, but it’s the gist of the story.

Some time back, Dr. Piehler angered his wife when he announced that he planned to build his own pine coffin. Even his best friends were upset, failing to understand the method in his madness, failing to see any possible reason for what he was doing other than that he was, in that act, giving up on life.

In reality, however, Dr. Piehler was getting back in touch with life.

He found the crafting of his own coffin to be a tool that helped him do just that. It was an exercise that enabled him to live more fully, more engaged, more aware, more appreciative, and more inthe-moment, not overlooking or squandering life while he was living it. He saw building his own coffin as a means of helping him to keep life and all the things of life in proper perspective. Hence, there’s just no need to dabble in road rage when you’ve just come from building your own coffin.

It is, I think, an invaluable perspective … considering we’re all dying. Maybe building our own coffin is the way to go. I’ve always loved woodworking. 3

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You’re close to reaching your objectives. That’s the good news. But be careful: Your aspects show lots of potential distractions looming. Stay focused and keep your eyes fixed on your goals.

CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Be careful not to let that suspicious Cancerian mind create a problem where none exists. What you might believe is an act of betrayal could be nothing more than a misunderstanding.

LEO (July 23 to August 22) Your Lion’s heart overflows with self-confidence. All you need to do is tap into it, and you’ll be able to handle any change that must be made regarding that recent surprise development.

Expanding sports tourism in southwest Illinois is a priority in 2023 for the Great Rivers & Routes Tourism Bureau.

That’s why it has hired Huddle Up Group, an Arizona-based organization which specializes in sports tourism strategic plans.

“Every year we see the economic impact of sports tourism on our region and know we can do better,” said Cory Jobe, President and CEO of the tourism bureau. “Growing sports events in our region will bring in more overnight stays, increase local tax revenues and we anticipate businesses will see an increase in sales. It’s a win-win for everyone.”

Huddle Up will help identify, grow, develop and service the region’s sports tourism efforts to ensure a positive economic impact. That work would ultimately lead to the development of a long-range strategic plan for the growth of sports in Madison County.

Huddle Up will conduct a market needs assessment on sports participation trends; do a regional facility audit including identifying existing public and private sports facilities, recommend needed upgrades and evaluate existing community needs; and create a comparative market analysis and market demand report. The market analysis report would include a comparison of the Great Rivers & Routes sports tourism market to at least three similar cities; include community input and participation; and recommend opportunities to advance sports tourism with current facilities and natural resources available.

Madison County ARPA funds secured by the bureau for sports tourism efforts will be used to fund the growth project.

Huddle Up is expected to conduct an analysis of sports events in the region, assess local athletic facilities and events potential and provide other key data reports. 3

Positive travel tone at tourism summit

With tourism on the rebound in southwest Illinois, it is now time for the region to shine in 2023, Cory Jobe President/CEO of the Great Rivers & Routes Tourism Bureau announced at the bureau’s annual Tourism Summit held today at the Gateway Convention Center in Collinsville.

Speaking to a sold-out venue of over 370 attendees, Jobe noted that while 2022 saw an increase in travelers and traveler spending in the region, the addition of new tourism products and strong destination marketing will be key to growth in 2023.

The Bureau also presented a series of awards to businesses in Collinsville, Edwardsville, Alton and

Grafton as well as former State Sen. Rachelle Crowe and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

“Why does tourism matter?” Jobe said during his presentation. “Our regional economy depends on tourism – it means thousands of jobs for our residents, millions in economic activity for businesses and millions more in local taxes to our communities.”

He backed those comments up with facts provided by the Illinois Office of Tourism.

Visitor spending improved in 2021 (the most recent year of economic data) to near pre-pandemic levels. The region saw visitor spending of $700 million with the

Students explore the stories and teachings of the Bible in a weekly religion class. Prayer and devotions are an essential part of each school day. Our schools are blessed to have wonderful parents that volunteer their time to provide extra resources and experiences for our children. Evangelical Parents Interested in Children (EPIC) hosts Grandparents’ Day, organizes a Truck-or-Treat, and plans fundraising activities in order to provide our teachers with extra classroom materials and our students with many unique experiences.

I would like to encourage you to attend our Open House on Tuesday evening, March 6, from 6-7:30pm. Our teachers will be present in the classrooms to answer any questions you may have. You can also call our school office at 618-466-1599 to schedule a private tour.

Shaving heads for charity

Marquette Catholic High School wrapped up Catholic Schools

Week in late January in the same way they have since 2012, shaving heads for childhood cancer research. Thirteen students, staff and supporters shaved their heads for donations to the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. Marquette Academic Dean, and teacher, Beth DeCourcey coordinates the event and says coming into the event they had raised over $110,000 since 2012. This year, she said they added $10,174 to their total.

Marquette alumni and staff member Mary Donahue was shaving her head again after a 9-year break and was the top fundraiser of the group. She says she appreciates the support from

her family, friends, and students at the school. “I am grateful to all the people who donated the money. When I can do this and they can support me, it’s like a team effort.

Mary’s friend Bob Mossman, a semi-retired barber, has been cutting hair for her family for years, and was picked to cut her hair. He says it is a fun way to give back.

“I knew it was a benefit and she asked me to do it. Plus, I brought my shortest clippers,” he joked.

Local stylist Sheila Beers was one of the volunteers who was cutting hair on Friday afternoon. She said the first time she cut hair for the event; one student didn’t tell his mom what he was doing. “While I was shaving his head, his phone started to go off and I said told him but he said it was probably his mom so he shouldn’t answer it.”

Some of the staff from Anderson’s Classic Barber Shop in Alton also assisted with the shaving event. Shavees this year were Mary Donahue (alum/custodian), Joe Boevingloh (alum - 11 times participating), Andrew Roth

(Senior), Christian Maag (Senior), Joey Nugen (Junior) - 3rd year, Steve Walch (8th grade - St. Mary’s) - 5 years, Peter Walch (Junior) - 4th year, Nathan Gerhart (Senior), Devon Doherty (Senior), Michael Wahl (Senior),

and Thomas Alonso (Senior). Marquette Teacher Michael Eddy let his students vote and he shaved his beard after 7 years, while teacher Garrett Flowers kept his beard but shaved his head. 3 stbaldricks.org

SMALL BUSINESS OF THE MONTH

Sparks Junk Removal and Hauling

Sparks Junk Removal and Hauling, as it marks its 30th year in business, has been named the recipient of the RiverBend Growth Association’s February 2023 Small Business of the Month award.

Owned by Denise Sparks, the company that got its start in 1993 as a ChemDry franchise carpet cleaning business has continued to evolve and grow over its years of operation to where it is today as a successful entrepreneurial venture with four employees and headquartered at 1816 Myrtle Street in Alton.

The company recently moved into a 3,000-square-foot shop at 2201 East Broadway, Alton, where it also provides a drop-off service for couches, mattresses, recliners, etc. There is a charge for this service, and drop-offs must be scheduled in advance.

“I began my journey as an entrepreneur in 1993 with ChemDry, and by 1999, I had emerged into smoke/fire and water damage, along with mold remediation,” noted Owner Denise Sparks. “By 2000, I had 35 employees. I tend to flow where the market goes, and by 2008 when the foreclosure boom happened, I ventured into property preservation.”

In 2019, the company was rebranded and Sparks Junk Removal and Hauling was born,

complete with a new logo and website.

Sparks Junk Removal and Hauling offers an all-inclusive junk removal service, including the labor to load up the debris, haul it away, and any disposal fees. The company strives for eco-friendliness, with recycling at the top of the company’s mission. Donating and repurposing as much as possible, Sparks takes only true trash to the landfill.

“If you have a home you are buying or selling and need to declutter, have an estate or storage unit that needs cleaned out, we can take care of that,” said Sparks. “When we have larger junk removal cleanout jobs, we use a local labor

staffing agency out of Glen Carbon to meet our increased labor needs.”

Sparks Junk Removal and Hauling has also recently added bulk curbside pick-up to its services, as well as rubber tire dumpster trailer rentals and on-site self-serve dumpster drop-off and pick-up.

“My greatest gifts of being a business owner all these years are the wonderful customers I have met, and some of those have become friends,” she added.

Sparks noted that her biggest challenge right now is one shared with most business owners. “It is so challenging trying to find good laborers. Our world today is so

different than how I was raised. If I wanted something, I had to work for it. I had to show up for my job, and I was taught to respect my boss.”

“Now, every day when I look in the mirror, I see my competition,” Sparks said, because of this strong work ethic rooted deep within her. “Each and every day, I strive to offer the best customer service, have the most respectful crew members, and every day I still learn something new, even after all these years.”

All of the training for the company’s employees is done inhouse, Sparks further noted, and is a very “hands-on opportunity.”

As for her company’s membership in the RiverBend Growth Association, Sparks said, “The RBGA is a wonderful organization for our community: By promoting not only a new business, but all businesses locally, and by bringing us all together in the monthly mingles.”

“To receive this award after so many years is truly humbling, and a complete surprise,” Sparks noted in a social media post. “First, I want to thank the hard-working crew at Sparks Junk Removal and Hauling who put up with me every day. They always work right alongside me and, as a team, we get the jobs done. Secondly, (to) our fabulous customers, without you there would not be a Sparks Junk Removal and Hauling. We appreciate your trust in us and appreciate your referrals.”

Committee members include Brenda Eardley, Adrianna Lock, Sam Quigley, Amy Roady, Kristen Ryrie, Martha Schultz, and Amy Smith. Spring is near—and there’s a whole lot going on in the Village of Bethalto!

There has been a lot of confusion and questions regarding the Municipal Electrical Aggregation program, in which Bethalto participates along with several municipalities in the Metro East region. The aggregation program allows municipalities to join together to obtain a fixed rate for the supply of electricity, and guarantees this rate for the contracted period of time. Our previous aggregation agreement with Homefield Energy expired in November, and the new agreement with Constellation starts this month, for a term of 24 months. The contracted rate is 12.10 cents per kilowatt hour. Your bill still comes from Ameren, the lines are still maintained by Ameren—you’ll just see Constellation as your supplier on that section of your Ameren bill. Qualifying residents received letters regarding the program, and to stay enrolled you didn’t need to do anything. Of

What’s happening around Bethalto?

course, none of us can predict the prices of a volatile electricity market, but throughout the life of the program, enrollees have saved significantly over the standard Ameren electric supply rates. We encourage you to visit constellation.com/il-bethalto for more information, or call Constellation at 833-6180284.

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency has mandated that municipalities survey residents within their boundaries to determine the makeup of water service lines entering homes. To satisfy this requirement, the Village has a link to our survey on our website.

Residents are asked to visit Bethalto.com to find the link to this survey. Please answer the questions as they pertain to your residence; instructions are attached to the online survey.

Spring cleaning is just around the corner, and Republic Services is ready to help Bethalto residents clean up by offering their twiceyearly cleanup week. This week’s spring cleanup is scheduled for March 27-31, whichever day corresponds with your normal trash pickup day. Residents are

asked to have their bulk items out at the curb by 6am, some restrictions apply. Visit republic.com or the Village website at Bethalto.com for guidelines.

April 4 is Election Day! The Village has three trustee seats open for election, with seven candidates running for those spots. Current Trustees Tim Lowrance, Maria Perkhiser, and Jeff Mull have terms expiring in May; candidates Maria Perkhiser, Tim Vogel, Jeff Mull, Rachel Sontag, Brian Frier, Kenneth “Ed” Slayden, and Chrissy Wiley have thrown their names into the hat, hoping to be elected. Early voting will be offered at Village Hall from March 20 through March 31, and a candidate’s forum, sponsored by the Bethalto Chamber of Commerce, is scheduled for March 14 at 7pm in the Bethalto Senior Citizens Building. Not registered to vote? You can stop by the Village Clerk’s office to register, register at an early voting location, or register and vote on election day—two forms of identification are required, one must show your current address.

Looking forward to summer already? The Bethalto

Jaycees will kick off the summer season with their annual carnival in Central Park from May 18-21. Rides, games, and festival food will entice the young and young at heart. This is the Jaycees biggest fundraiser of the year, so be sure to come out, have some fun, and support a great cause.

Bethalto Spirit will once again sponsor Music in the Park every Thursday in Central Park beginning May 25. Follow Bethalto Spirit on Facebook for more details closer to the events. Their weekly Farmers Markets are also set to start in June. We look forward to hosting their great local vendors!

Did you know that Bethalto offers a Senior Bus Program? Through a collaboration with Fort Russell Township, Wood River Township, and the Village of Bethalto, anyone aged 62+ can catch a free ride on the Senior Bus to doctor’s appointments, hair salons, grocery shopping, and more. The bus will pick you up at your door, safely drive you to your destination (specified distances within Bethalto, Alton, Godfrey, Wood River, East Alton), and get you home quickly and efficiently, all at no cost to the rider. All you need to do is call one day in advance between 9am-11:30am to

schedule a ride; the dispatch number is 618-377-5263. The program is always seeking volunteer drivers & dispatchers—anyone interested can contact Bill Ambrose at 618-792-8971.

As a reminder, all Village Board meetings are open to the public; regular meetings are the second Monday of the month beginning at 7pm and are held in our Council Chambers inside Village Hall. We encourage residents to attend and to stay informed of all the happenings in town. Also be sure to follow our Village Facebook page (Bethalto Village) and visit our website Bethalto.com.

The Salvation Army surpasses red kettle campaign to help thousands in need

The Salvation Army has exceeded its red kettle campaign goal of $217,000 by raising more than $364,000 to help people in Madison County. Reflected in the total are donations made through mail appeals, corporate gifts, unsolicited gifts, Schnucks Round Up at the Register and donations made at red kettles throughout the area.

“Once again, the generous people of Alton and Godfrey and all of Madison County have shown how caring they are toward those in need,” said campaign cochair Dr. John Hoelscher

Even Exchange

“Even during this tough economy, the spirit of giving remained strong. This allows the Salvation Army to continue its good works for another year, providing food, clothing, shelter and guidance to our neighbors who need help.”

“We want to thank everyone who gave so generouslythose who signed up to ring bells in the cold and the many local businesses who set out red kettles in their shops and allowed ringers to stand outside their doors. Their kindness is so greatly appreciated,” campaign co-chair Barb Hoelscher

went on to say. “And, of course, the many individuals and organizations who gave cash, wrote checks, or sent funds electronically - every dollar counts, and our area came through in a huge way! We are fortunate to have Captains Cassy and Sean Grey leading the Madison County Corps. It’s good to know the Salvation Army mission is in such capable hands.”

With the generosity of the community, The Salvation Army was able to serve over 375 families, providing Christmas baskets and over 5,500 gifts. 3

Each numbered row contains two clues and two 6-letter answers. The two answers differ from each other by only one letter, which has already been inserted. For example, if you exchange the A from MA STER for an I, you get MISTER. Do not change the order of the letters.

Down Payment & Closing Cost

PROPERTY MANAGEMENT

What should we look for in an investment property?

An attractive investment property has three specific characteristics.

Location. The property needs to be in an area that has good neighborhoods, acceptable schools, and a strong economy. Your prospective tenants will want an easy commute to work and access to grocery stores, shopping, restaurants, and recreation. Don’t buy something that’s too remote.

Potential for appreciation. Look for a home that will grow in value. You know the real estate market is well positioned when there is strong infrastructure and new jobs and industries coming into the area. Properties in neighborhoods that are seeing new development have a good chance for appreciation.

BANKRUPTCY

Can a bankruptcy stop a foreclosure?

YES.

27161 IL-3, Godfrey 618-463-8811 pmpriverbend.com

What does a will do for me?

A will instructs how you want your assets (money, property, etc.) to be distributed after you die. If you die without a will, your probate assets will be divided according to state law.

Here are some tips for preparing a will:

You’ve already been struggling with bills for months. All of your income goes right back out the door as soon as you’re paid, with little or nothing left over. Then an emergency comes up and you are unable to make your house payment. The mortgage company says they will work with you, but then they return your check the following month. You feel like you get the run-around every time you call them, and then you get a letter saying that they are going to start foreclosure proceedings.

Can a bankruptcy stop the foreclosure?

A chapter 13 bankruptcy stops a foreclosure and allows you to get caught up on your payments through a federally court ordered repayment plan. Your mortgage company will be paid the regular monthly payment and a small portion of the arrearage amount each month.

A chapter 13 bankruptcy can also allow you to discharge many unsecured debts in the process, making it even easier to pay your mortgage and keep your house – your most valuable asset.

• Have an attorney draft your will. By drafting it on your own, you risk being non-compliant with state law which makes your will invalid.

• Name an executor, who will handle such tasks as collecting assets, paying all debts and taxes and distributing your estate, according to your wishes.

• List personal property such as artwork, collectibles, jewelry and other personal property that you want to go to specific individuals.

• Do not include funeral preferences in your will since it may not be read until several weeks after your death.

• Review your will every few years and have your attorney make changes as appropriate.

A little advance preparation will help ensure that your final wishes are handled the way YOU planned them to be.

Vintage Voices celebrates record-breaking year of keeping history alive

Vintage Voices had a record-breaking turnout in 2022, with 624 guests attending from as far away as Washington state and Ireland. This total surpasses the record of 596 attendees set in 2021.

“We love sharing our local history,” said committee chair Jody Basola. “Vintage Voices has become a treasured October tradition. Having costumed actors portray historical characters and telling their story in the beautiful Alton Cemetery gives guests an opportunity to “meet them” and appreciate their contributions to our community.”

“While the mission is to keep local history alive, we are fortunate to be able to donate a portion of the ticket sales back to the community,” Basola went on to say. “Local organizations receiving donations this year are Alton Cemetery, Alton Community Service League, Alton-Godfrey Rotary Club, Alton Knights of Columbus, Boys and Girls Club of Alton, Crisis Food Center, Hayner Genealogy & Local History Library, Oasis Women’s Center, Overnight Warming Centers of Alton, Rotary Club of the Riverbend, The Salvation Army, and YWCA of

Southwestern Illinois.”

In addition to sharing local history, Vintage Voices has a role in contributing to it. Two recent portrayals were the Newtons. Charles Newton (portrayed by Jared Hennings in 2021) was the first Black graduate of Alton High School. While researching Newton it was discovered that his wife, Sara Newton Cohron (portrayed by Velva Parker last year) had a distinguished career of her own.

“We knew that Prof. Charles Newton’s grave was in the Alton Cemetery, but it was not until my staff and I began researching his life for Vintage Voices that we realized his wife was buried with him,” said Lacy S. McDonald, Hayner Genealogy & Local History Library Manager.

“Sadly, despite their significant achievements, there was nothing marking their graves.”

Vintage Voices and Hayner Public Library District worked with Gent Funeral Home, who generously donated a marker for Newton’s grave. A dedication ceremony is planned for June 2023, to coincide with the 150th anniversary of Prof. Charles Newton’s graduation from Alton High School. 3
