Frenchman attempts swim across Pacific Meghan to join Queen Frenchman embarked on moment. Finally really to start

a 9,000-kilometre journey from Japan to the US west coast, hoping to become the first person to swim across the Pacific Ocean. Ben Lecomte dived into the water off the coast of Choshi, east of Tokyo, on Tuesday morning, planning to reach San Francisco in six months’ time in an attempt to raise awareness about the ocean’s health. “More than six years of preparations have lead to this

my swim across the Pacific Ocean,” the 51-year-old wrote on Twitter. A live-stream of his departure was posted on Facebook. Lecomte is planning to swim for eight hours a day, aiming to advance 65 km each day, accompanied by a support sailing boat and his six crew members. “I’m not an Olympic swimmer, but I am an adventurer in the way that I push my limits,” said Lecomte, who became the first person to swim across the Atlantic in 1998, in just 73 days. The team, working with 12 scientific institutions, including NASA and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, will conduct oceanic and medical research throughout the journey. “I want as many people as possible to understand that each one of us has to take action, because the ocean is in peril right now, and if we don’t change anything, it’s going to be even worse in a few years,” Lecomte said in an interview with GQ.

T

he Duchess of Sussex will accompany the Queen when she carries out a series of official events in Cheshire next week, according to the royal family website. The engagements will be the first time just the Queen and Meghan have taken part in royal events together. Prince Harry and new his wife married just over two weeks ago on May 19, during a service that combined British traditions with diversity and modernity. And now the newest member of the royal family will accompany the head of state when she opens both the Mersey Gateway Bridge at the Catalyst Science Discovery Centre in the northern England town of Widnes and the Storyhouse Theatre in Chester. Meghan and the Queen will also have lunch at Chester Town Hall during the Cheshire awayday on June 14. The duchess paid tribute to the Queen as an “incredible woman” when she described her

first meetings with the head of state. When interviewed to mark her engagement to Harry, Meghan said: “It’s incredible, I think, you know, to be able to meet her through his lens, not just with his honour and respect for her as the monarch, but the love that he has for her as his grandmother. “All of those layers have been so important for me so that when I met her I had such a deep understanding and of course incredible respect for being able to have that time with her.” Meghan went on to say: “She’s an incredible woman.”

ens of thousands of people have rallied in Madrid for a nationwide ban on bullfighting in Spain. Protesters also demanded the removal of all spectacles involving bulls from the national cultural heritage register, the end of the support of such events using taxpayer money, and stronger animal protection laws. More than 40,000 people took part in the demonstration, according to organisers from the activists’ group Tauromaquia Es Violencia or TeV (Bullfighting is Violence). On central Madrid’s Puerta del Sol square, around 500 activists broke bullfighter lances that released a cloud of red powder to symbolise the blood of the 20,000

bulls that are killed each year in Spain during events that often have a centuries-long history. Protesters carried placards with phrases such as, “Bullfighting: National Disgrace”. “It is backwards that, in the 21st century, animals are still being tortured for fun and that it’s being financed with public money,” Laura Gonzalo, a spokeswoman for TeV, told the Spanish news agency Europa Press. Spain’s conservative government reduced the valueadded tax for bullfighting to 10 per cent in 2017. The tradition of bullfighting was declared a “national cultural heritage” in 2013 and can therefore be supported with public funding.

Richard Branson training to be astronaut S

ir Richard Branson has revealed that he is training to become an astronaut as he takes the fight to Amazon boss Jeff Bezos in the commercial space race. The billionaire, who is attempting to get his space tourism company Virgin Galactic off the ground, said that he will be catapulted into space within months. “We’re talking about months not years - so it’s close. There are exciting times ahead,” he told BBC’s Radio 4. “I’m going for astronaut training, I’m going for fitness training, centrifuge and other training so that my body will hopefully cope well when I go to space.” Sir Richard, tech entrepreneur Elon Musk and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos are leading the charge in commercial space travel as they race to get tourists into space. While Sir Richard believes Musk is “doing fantastically well” in getting cargo into space and building bigger and bigger rockets, the real tussle is between

the Virgin boss and Bezos. “I think we’re both (Sir Richard and Mr Bezos) neck-and-neck as to who will put people into space first. “Ultimately we have to do it safely. It’s more a race with ourselves to make sure we have the craft that are safe to put people up there.” Sir Richard, 67, hopes to be one of those first space tourists. He said his astronaut training is going well so far, and he’s increased his fitness training by playing tennis four times a day. “Instead of doing one set of tennis every morning and every evening I’m doing two sets. I’m going kiting and biking - doing whatever it takes to make me as fit as possible.”

The Virgin founder is also taking part in gruelling centrifuge training which recreates the pressures the human body experiences during space flight. All astronauts endure G-force training which simulates the experience of take-off and travel through the earth’s atmosphere. Earlier this year Virgin Galactic completed a supersonic test flight of its SpaceShipTwo passenger rocket ship. It was the first return to the

air for the company since a crash in the Californian desert in 2014 in which one pilot was killed and another was injured.

WEINSTEIN PLEADS NOT ASTEROID GUILTY TO SEX CHARGES BREAKS UP OVER AFRICA

A M

ovie mogul Harvey Weinstein has pleaded not guilty to charges of rape and sexual assault in the first cases involving the disgraced producer to be tested in criminal court since scores of accusers emerged last year. Weinstein, 66, entered his plea in Manhattan Supreme Court on Tuesday morning after a grand jury indicted him last week in two cases. Weinstein left the court without speaking to reporters. Defence attorney Benjamin Brafman confirmed that his client had pleaded not guilty. “Mr Weinstein has denied these crimes. He has never engaged in non-consensual sex with anyone,” Brafman told reporters. “Rape is a reprehensible crime. It is equally reprehensible to be falsely accused of rape. In his view, he has been falsely accused of rape.” Weinstein turned himself in at a New York police station on May 25, and was taken to court in handcuffs for his initial arraignment. A judge ordered him released on a $1 million (A$1.3m) cash bail on condition that he surrender his US passport and agree to wear a location-tracking

device. He was ordered to remain in New York state or Connecticut. More than 70 women have accused Weinstein, the cofounder of the Miramax film studio and The Weinstein Company, of sexual misconduct, including rape, with some allegations dating back decades, all of which he has denied. The accusations, first reported by the New York Times and the New Yorker last year, gave rise to the #MeToo movement, in which hundreds of women have publicly accused powerful men in business, government and entertainment of misconduct. Other actresses who have publicly accused Weinstein of sexual misconduct include Uma Thurman and Salma Hayek. “It’s long overdue for him to face this,” said Gloria Allred, an attorney who represents women accusing men of sexual harassment, said outside the court. She said she has at least two clients who have accused Weinstein of sexual wrongdoing. If convicted on the most serious charges, Weinstein could face between five and 25 years in prison.

boulder-size asteroid disintegrated harmlessly over Africa, just hours after its weekend discovery, scientists have said. It’s only the third time scientists have spotted an incoming asteroid on a direct collision course with Earth. The previous times were in 2008 and 2014. The asteroid, dubbed 2018 LA, was discovered out near the moon’s orbit early Saturday morning, aiming straight for Earth. NASA reported the latest episode Sunday night. Asteroid trackers at NASA and elsewhere quickly determined the rock - one to two metre across - was too small to pose any danger. It burned up in the Saturday evening sky over Botswana, eight hours after first being noticed. Video posted on YouTube, from a farm just across the border in South Africa, showed a fireball swiftly descending and getting bigger, and then

a blinding flash in the sky. It burst apart several miles up, according to NASA. Initial estimates had the impact zone stretching from southern Africa across the Indian Ocean into New Guinea. Tracking systems narrowed it down to southern Africa. NASA officials said the scramble among scientists and asteroid observers was a good training exercise. Their ability to zoom in on likely impact areas bodes well for the future, if and when a bigger object heads our way. “This was a much smaller object than we are tasked to detect and warn about,” NASA’s planetary defense officer, Lindley Johnson, said in a statement. “However, this real-world event allows us to exercise our capabilities and gives some confidence our impact prediction models are adequate to respond to the potential impact of a larger object.”

Parent fever fears burden emergency dept’s

A

third of children under six who go to hospital with a fever might be doing so unnecessarily and could instead be treated by their GPs, according to new Australian research. Analysis of hospital emergency department admissions showed in most of these cases, kids were simply given fluids to drink and paracetamol to reduce fever. Researchers at the University of Tasmania say educating parents about managing fever, and in particular managing dehydration, may reduce the overall burden on the health system. “Parents’ fear of fever, or ‘fever phobia’, has been well documented, both nationally and internationally, over the past three decades,” they wrote in the Journal of Paediatrics and Child Health. “It has been reported that many parents are unable to determine what a normal temperature for their child is and are excessively concerned about the harm that they expect to be associated with fever, such as brain damage and seizures.” To investigate the impact of

‘fever phobia’ on the health-care system, the researchers looked at all patient admissions to the Royal Hobart Hospital emergency department between January 2013 and December 2015. In total, there were 165,806 emergency presentations, with children under the age of six accounting for 17 per cent all emergency presentations. Of these children, there were 459 presentations (0.3 per cent) to the ED with a primary diagnosis description of ‘unspecified fever’. Further analysis showed of all presentations, 141 (30.7 per cent) were classified as potentially avoidable, “GP-type presentations” as defined by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW). In most (88.8 per cent) of these cases, the only therapy administered in the ED was feveralleviating oral medication such as ibuprofen or paracetamol and/ or oral fluids. The researchers say further investigation is needed to determine whether these could be managed in the primary care setting.

author Dr Sean Byars at the University of Melbourne. “As we uncover more about the function of immune tissues and the lifelong consequences of their removal, especially during sensitive ages when the body is developing, this will hopefully help guide treatment decisions for parents and doctors.” But Dr Robert Loblay, Director of the Allergy Unit in the Department of Clinical Immunology at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, says this is an observational study and the conclusions need to be taken with a large grain of salt. He said the underlying reasons behind why the kids have their tonsils and adenoids removed in the first place could be responsible for the increased risk of other illnesses. “Fortunately, in recent decades the pendulum has swung right away from unnecessary tonsillectomies or adenoidectomies. It’s relatively uncommon to see a child who’s had one nowadays without there being a good indication,” Dr Loblay said.

CHINA URGED TO COME CLEAN OVER TIANANMEN MASSACRE

T

he United States has urged China to make a full public account of those killed, detained or who went missing during a crackdown on studentled pro-democracy protests in and around Beijing’s Tiananmen Square in 1989. The Chinese government sent tanks to quell the June 4, 1989 protests, and has never released a death toll. Estimates from human rights groups and witnesses range from several hundred to several thousand. The Tiananmen crackdown is a taboo subject in China and 29 years later it remains a point of contention between China and many Western countries. In a statement on Sunday Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said he remembered “the tragic loss of innocent lives”. “As Liu Xiaobo wrote in his 2010 Nobel Peace Prize speech, delivered in absentia, ‘the ghosts of June 4th have not yet been laid to rest’,” Pompeo said referring to the Chinese dissident who died last year while still in custody. “We join others in the

international community in urging the Chinese government to make a full public accounting of those killed, detained or missing,” Pompeo added. In response to Pompeo’s comments, China had lodged “stern representations” with the United States, foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said on Monday. China long ago reached a clear conclusion about the events of that era, but the United States every year issues statements making “gratuitous criticism” of China and interfering in China’s internal affairs, Hua said. “The US Secretary of State has absolutely no qualifications to demand the Chinese government do anything,” she added. Hu Xijin, editor of nationalistic tabloid the Global Times, called Pompeo’s statement a “meaningless stunt” that “represents a wish of the Western world to meddle in China’s political process”. The Chinese Communist Party no longer mentions the Tiananmen incident in order to

help Chinese society move on, which it has successfully done, Hu added, writing in English on Twitter, which is blocked in China. Tens of thousands of people are expected to gather later in the day in Hong Kong to mark the anniversary, the only place in China where such large-scale public commemorations happen. On Tiananmen Square, security was tight as is usual for the anniversary, with no signs of any protests or other memorial

events. In their annual open letter, the Tiananmen Mothers, who represent the families of those who died, said the government was guilty of serious disrespect by ignoring their requests for redress. “Such a powerful proletarian dictatorship apparatus is afraid of us: the old, the sick, and the weakest and most vulnerable of our society,” they wrote in a letter addressed to Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Vic curry chef jailed for murdering diner

A

Nepalese curry chef will spend at least 17 years in jail after he fatally stabbed a drunken customer up to 17 times at his Victorian restaurant after he asked for spicy food. Hari Prasad Dhakal, 50, stabbed 38-year-old Pakistaniborn IT worker Abdullah Siddiqi multiple times at the Ballarat Curry House on October 25, 2016. Supreme Court judge Lex Lasry said on Friday the killing was “totally out-of-proportion” to provocation from his customer the only diner in the restaurant. Mr Siddiqi - an infrequent drinker - arrived at the restaurant with a bottle of Jim Beam black label whiskey. After finishing his meal, the intoxicated Mr Siddiqi approached the counter and asked for more food - something spicy - but Dhakal told him he’d had too much to drink. The two men then pushed and shoved each other, with Mr Siddiqi slipping at one point. Dhakal then took a knife and stabbed Mr Siddiqi multiple times, with 17 sharp force

injuries to his head, neck and arms, which damaged his arteries, veins, voicebox, cervical spine and skull. “It’s common ground the deceased lost his temper and became quite abusive towards you,” Justice Lasry said. Justice Lasry said Mr Siddiqi had called Dhakal a “motherf***er” and “sisterf***er” in Hindi. “I accept the deceased was aggressive and you responded spontaneously,” he said. “(But) the threat from him was totally out-of-proportion to the action you took with the knife in your restaurant. “You were entitled to be offended by what he said and you were entitled to resist his somewhat clumsy pushing. However, your actions in stabbing him to death went far beyond anything that had been done to you.” Justice Lasry accepted Dhakal’s remorse and that he suffered anxiety because, being Brahmin (the highest Hindu caste), his actions would not be condoned. “This is one of those rare cases

where despite your plea of not guilty ... I accept you are remorseful,” he said. “It occurred spontaneously and in response to significant provocation from the deceased.” Dhakal turned up to a police station producing the knife, which he’d wrapped in cloth and placed in a plastic bag,

saying: “I’ve killed someone”. Dhakal claimed during his trial he acted in self-defence, lost control and had little memory of his actions and feared Mr Siddiqi might attack him with a knife, but the jury rejected his claims. Dhakal was living in Australia illegally without a visa for several years after his 2000 arrival and will almost certainly be deported post-sentence. He was jailed for 23 years with a minimum of 17 years.

AFL boss closer to trial

OVER DRUGS SAGA A

A push to put a mask

on this flu season A push to protect people against the flu with a “weak” vaccine is overshadowing effective prevention methods such as hand-washing and maskwearing, warns a public health expert. Dr Chris Del Mar, Professor of Public Health at Bond University has challenged the value of influenza vaccinations while speaking at the GPs Down Under Conference on the Gold Coast. He claims the influenza vaccine has been “oversold” in Australia and said hand-washing and mask-wearing should be the focus of flu prevention campaigns. Prof Del Mar pointed to a review that found seasonal flu vaccines only reduced the rate of laboratory confirmed influenza cases by between one to two per cent. “Influenza is indeed a true threat to public health and I am not a vaccine sceptic in general, but annual influenza vaccinations do little to protect against serious illness,” Prof Del Mar told AAP. “My viewing of the evidence is that the amount of benefit for influenza vaccine is very, very weak and it makes me think that this is not a great use of our effort in trying to immunise large swathes of the population when there are other opportunities that my be more effective,” he said.

Simple hygiene methods such as handwashing, face masks and quarantine should not be forgotten, Prof Del Mar said. “Perhaps we should be encouraging people to wear masks much more often than is socially acceptable in Australia but is socially acceptable in places like Japan and other parts of East Asia,” He also wants to see the sterilisation of public places, such as buses and trains. Dr Tony Bartone, President of the Australian Medical Association said health authorities have never shied away from the fact the influenza vaccine is not as effective as a number of other vaccines. An ineffective vaccine was partly to blame for last year’s “horror” flu season, he said. “The effectiveness in our elderly population was probably as low as 30 per cent or even less,” Dr Bartone said. He also agreed hand-washing was critical against controlling the spread of influenza. “The best way not to catch something is avoid it,” he said. He said this year’s vaccine promises to be much more effective. “We must not overlook the effectiveness and importance of influenza vaccination as part of a generalised strategy to control the spread of a significant disease that has the potential to kill,” Dr Bartone said.

FL boss Gillon McLachlan appears to be a step closer to facing a trial over his handling of the Essendon drugs saga after a court ruling in Melbourne went mostly against the league. McLachlan and former AFL chairman Mike Fitzpatrick are accused of engaging in misleading and deceptive conduct in relation to statements they made in the aftermath of the scandal. Melbourne lawyer Jackson Taylor launched a case against the AFL pair in a Supreme Court writ, alleging they breached consumer laws to protect their commercial interest. The case centres on a number of comments, including McLachlan denying that he tried to engineer outcomes in the saga before Bombers players and officials were interviewed by ASADA and the AFL. The AFL had sought for parts of the case to be heard at a preliminary hearing to limit the need for witnesses and the discovery of documents. But Supreme Court judge John Dixon on Wednesday ruled against the AFL’s request in relation to two legal “questions” in the matter. One question was whether or not the particular public statements made by McLachlan and Fitzpatrick were in the course of “trade or commerce” under Australian consumer laws. A third question relating to a deed

of release will be sent for determination before the case proceeds. Justice Dixon also ordered the AFL to pay Mr Taylor’s costs in opposing the application for the “mini-trial”. In the case against the AFL, Mr Taylor alleges several statements by McLachlan about the doping saga were misleading or deceptive. These include a comment McLachlan made in an interview with AFL 360, representing that the AFL had taken reasonable care in protection the health and safety of Essendon players involved in the supplements program. Mr Taylor wants the court to declare that McLachlan, Fitzpatrick and the AFL acted unlawfully.

Winter expected to be warm, dry

M

ost of Australia can expect a mild and dry winter, the Bureau of Meteorology says. The bureau’s climate outlook for June to August, released recently, predicts winter days and nights are likely to be warmerthan-average for most of the country. Only far north Queensland and the Northern Territory are expected to experience average maximum temperatures in the high 20’s during the three months - which is anything but wintry.

The winter outlook follows what the bureau says was one of Australia’s warmest autumns on record and its second-warmest summer on record. Southern mainland Australia also had one of its driest autumns on record, with dry conditions expected to continue. Chances of a dry June are greater than 80 per cent for northern Victoria, southern and western NSW and most of SA, while WA’s Gascoyne region and southern Queensland are also likely to be drier than average.

Aboriginal settlement China launch to view in Oz ‘no satellite moon’s dark side accident’ C

A

boriginal settlement in Australia was no accident but the result of large-scale migration by skilled maritime explorers, research shows. Experts have made the finding using wind and ocean current modelling, similar to that deployed in the search for missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370. The process was designed to simulate likely routes between the islands of Timor and Roti and more than 100 now-submerged islands off the Kimberley coast. “There’s always been a lot of speculation about how Aboriginal people made it to Australia and a lot of people have argued that people might have made it here by accident,” study co-author and James Cook University archaeology Professor Sean Ulm told AAP. “What this study has shown ... is that it’s so absolutely improbable that you can explain any of those lines of evidence with accidental voyaging. “It has to be purposeful, it has to be co-ordinated and it has to be fairly large-scale to explain the patterns we see.” The Quaternary Science Reviews-published study

hina has launched a relay satellite designed to establish a communication link between earth and a planned lunar probe that will explore the dark side of the moon, the official Xinhua news agency says. Citing the China National Space Administration, Xinhua said the satellite was launched at 5.28am (local time) on Monday on a Long March-4C rocket from the Xichang launch centre in the southwest of the country. “The launch is a key step for China to realise its goal of being the first country to send a probe to soft-land on and rove the far side of the moon,” Xinhua quoted Zhang Lihua, manager

estimated migration to the bridge of islands off northwest Australia occurred between about 50,000 and 65,000 years ago. Prof Ulm said the sea was 75 metres lower and the islands visible from the parts of Timor and Roti. The hundreds of routes modelled would have taken between four and seven days and spanned up to 150 kilometres. “If you had the technology to make it there, it was really easy to make it to Australia,” the professor said. “We’re talking 60,000 years ago here. So that is an incredible time stamp to how complex the first Australians were from the moment they first saw Australia.” The study - by experts from the CSIRO and various universities also used genetic information to show hundreds of people, not just a few, likely made the voyage. “This is very significant because it was very early in modern human dispersals across the globe,” Prof Ulm said. “We’re talking multiple boats, not just one boat blowing off course ... reflecting the population in the mainland Southeast Asian area.”

T

he move to ban tobogganing from one of Australia’s most popular ski resorts has stunned families and even a national ski and snowboard selector. Ten days out from the opening of the ski season, Thredbo ski resort released a statement on its website preventing the use of toboggans and snow sliding equipment, citing safety concerns. Families with pre-booked snow holidays at the resort are not happy about missing out on toboggan fun, with Thredbo believed to be the first ski resort in the world to ban the muchloved family-friendly pastime. “Collisions with other sleds, vehicles, skiers, snowboarders, loss of control and falling off are among the safety concerns cited behind the resort’s decision to ban tobogganing,” the statement said. The resort says its decision is to “maximise safety for guests, employees, and resort property.”

“Thredbo prohibits the use of toboggans and other miscellaneous snow sliding equipment that is associated with ‘Snow Play’ within our leasehold area,” the statement said. Former Olympic coach David Speirs, who’s worked in ski resorts across Australia, Europe and the US for the past 30 years, says he’s never heard of a similar toboggan ban. “To my knowledge, I have never heard of a resort-wide ban on toboggans in Europe or America,” Mr Spiers told AAP on Thursday. He said accidents involving toboggan are however more likely to occur in Australia where there is a smaller snow coverage, with local holidaymakers unaware of the dangers that a sled can pose. He made comparisons to Europe and the US where resorts regularly receive heavy snowfalls and have much bigger snow play areas. Thredbo’s decision has sparked an angry backlash on social

Sri Lankan man who threatened to detonate a bomb on a flight out of Melbourne is due to be sentenced and could face jail time. Manodh Marks, 26, forced Malaysia Airlines flight MH128 bound for Kuala Lumpur to turn back shortly after take-off when he screamed that he had a bomb after taking the drug ice in May 2017. NICK PHILIPPOUSSIS’ PROGNOSIS GRIM: DA

A

California judge has declined to dismiss the child sexual assault case against Australian tennis coach Nick Philippoussis after staunch opposition from the families of the two nine-year-old girls he allegedly molested. Philippoussis, 68, suffered a massive stroke in San Diego County Jail last year that has left him bedridden and unable to communicate or respond to stimuli. The physician treating Philippoussis has described his condition as “slightly comatose” and “a step above a vegetative state”. He may never face a trial. “Although Philippoussis’ prognosis is grim, the victims’ family in this case is strongly opposed to dismissing the case at this time,” San Diego Deputy

District Attorney Garret Wong told AAP. “The victims in this case are entitled to justice and we view a dismissal in this case at this time as premature and inappropriate given the circumstances.” Philippoussis’ lawyer, Ryan Tegnelia, said it was “unlikely in the extreme” his client would recover from the stroke. At a brief hearing in San Diego on Thursday Mr Wong asked for a six-month continuance and the judge agreed, scheduling a readiness conference for December 12. A preliminary hearing date was also set for January 17. Mr Wong said Philippoussis’ condition has not had any meaningful improvement since the stroke and Philippoussis is not competent to proceed with the case at this time.

o date has been set for Australian-born WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange to regain access to the internet at the Ecuadorean Embassy in London where he has been in asylum since 2012, Ecuador’s foreign minister said. Maria Fernanda Espinosa said Assange has not complied with his agreement to avoid intervening in the politics of other countries. “On several occasions he has agreed on not intervening in internal politics of third-party countries and unfortunately he has not complied with his commitment, so for the time being he is not allowed to have access to the internet,” she told The Associated Press. “It is not a matter of censorship.” Ecuador’s government cut off Assange’s internet connection in March after social media posts decrying the arrest of a Catalan separatist politician. Ecuador gave Assange asylum to avoid extradition to Sweden for the investigation of alleged sex-related claims. Sweden dropped the case, but Assange remains subject to arrest in Britain for jumping bail. He also fears a possible US extradition request. The foreign minister said that Ecuador has asked Assange to comply with “his obligations” when it comes to “respecting

international law”. “We have asked him to do so and he has said he would (comply)”, she said. “Unfortunately he did not on several occasions”. Ecuador has tried to find a solution that would allow Assange to leave without the threat of arrest, but so far without success. Ms Espinosa said that her government is in continuous talks with Assange’s lawyers and with the British government. “I think all parties are interested in finding an outlet, a solution, to this complex situation,” she said. Ms Espinosa was at UN headquarters in New York because of Tuesday’s election for the presidency of the next session of the General Assembly, which starts in September. She and the current ambassador of Honduras to the UN, Mary Elizabeth Flores, are vying to lead the 193-member world body. The presidency rotates every year by region. Ecuador granted Assange citizenship in December as part of an effort to make him a member of its diplomatic team, which would grant him additional rights, such as special legal immunity. However, Britain’s Foreign Office rejected the request to grant him diplomatic status in the UK.

APPLE UNVEILS NEW SOFTWARE UPGRADES

A

pple has unveiled software upgrades that would let older iPhones run faster, help parents limit their children’s screen time and make its Siri voice assistant work more like a rival feature from Amazon.com. Taken together, the moves announced at Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference in San Jose amounted to focusing on reliability and catching up with some competitors. The latest version of Apple’s operating system for the iPhone and iPad, iOS 12, will make older devices such as the iPhone 6 work better. Software chief Craig Federighi said iOS 12 could carry out simple tasks, such as opening

apps, up to twice as fast as its predecessor, iOS 11. The new system will work on a range of products that date back to 2013. As the smartphone industry has matured, consumers have kept devices longer. Apple faced a backlash late last year when it emerged that the company slowed down some older iPhones with flagging batteries. Other new features include parental controls to limit the time children spend in apps, as well as which apps they can use. Earlier this year, shareholders criticised Apple for contributing to computer overuse by children. Apple also rolled out group video chat sessions with up to 32 users, putting it in direct competition with companies

ndroid smartphone users in Victoria will be able to pay for public transport with a virtual Myki as part of a trial. About 1000 people will participate in the trial from July until early next year, using their phones to tap on and off, and top up as well as check their Myki balance, Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan says.

The trial will cost between $2 and $3 million and only apply to android users but the government says the technology could eventually be used in other phones as well. “This will mean that the phones can store the card and people will be able to use the existing readers, the existing gates to participate in the trial,” Ms Allan told reporters.

such as Cisco Systems and Microsoft’s Skype. The company broadened the ways that developers can work with Siri, allowing more in-app use. Until Monday, Apple had let developers tap Siri for voice control of only a handful of apps such as PayPal and Uber. Amazon, by contrast, has been much more open in letting developers create custom phrases to control apps with its Alexa assistant. New features help protect users’ anonymity online. The

company said its Safari web browser for both Macs and iPhones will protect users from being tracked without their permission by websites that use “like” or “share” buttons from social media companies. Apple unveiled new steps to make it hard for advertisers to distinguish among users, building on its effort, begun last year, to prevent such tracking.

FACEBOOK TO PULL PLUG ON ‘TRENDING’ TOPICS

F

acebook Inc says it will remove the ‘Trending’ topics feature that compiles popular news from its social network, as it seeks to ensure users see news from trustworthy and quality sources. The move, effective next week, comes at a time when the world’s largest social network is combating the spread of fake news on its platform, which has in some places become central to the distribution of news. Trending accounted for less than 1.5 per cent of clicks to news publishers on average, Facebook said, adding the

company was testing ways to display news including a ‘breaking news label’ and ‘today in’, a dedicated section for local news. The quality of news on Facebook was called into question after alleged Russian operatives, for-profit spammers and others spread false reports on the site, including during the 2016 U.S. election campaign. Facebook had in the past few years made changes to the Trending topics feature to avoid ideological or political bias. Photo: Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg

FAMILY FINDS ALEXA HAS A MIND OF HER OWN

A

Portland, Oregon-family has learned what happens when Amazon’s popular voice assistant Alexa is lost in translation. Amazon recently described an “unlikely... string of events” that made Alexa send an audio recording of the family to one of their contacts randomly. The episode underscored how Alexa can misinterpret conversation as a wake-up call and command. A local news outlet, KIRO 7, reported that a woman with Amazon devices across her home received a call two weeks ago from her husband’s employee, who said Alexa had recorded the family’s conversation about hardwood floors and sent it to him. “I felt invaded,” the woman, only identified as Danielle, said in the report. “A total privacy invasion. Immediately I said, ‘I’m never plugging that device in again,

because I can’t trust it.’” Alexa, which comes with Echo speakers and other gadgets, starts recording after it hears its name or another “wake word” selected by users. This means that an utterance quite like Alexa, even from a TV commercial, can activate a device. That’s what happened in the incident, Amazon said. “Subsequent conversation was heard as a ‘send message’ request,” the company said in a statement. “At which point, Alexa said out loud ‘To whom?’ At which point, the background conversation was interpreted as a name in the customer’s contact list.” “We are evaluating options to make this case even less likely,” Amazon added. Assuring customers of Alexa’s security is crucial to Amazon, which has ambitions for Alexa to be ubiquitous - whether dimming the lights for customers or

mobile app is being rolled out in Victoria that will alert off-duty paramedics and other first responders to nearby medical emergencies, creating an “army” of potential life savers. The GoodSAM application sends alerts to

paramedics, firefighters, doctors and other trained professionals who are within a short distance of an emergency when it strikes. The app, launched by Ambulance Victoria on Tuesday, allows off-duty professionals to provide first aid before ambulance and emergency crews have arrived. It will be focused on time-sensitive medical emergencies, particularly heart attacks, and authorities believe it will save lives. “It’s about ensuring that we can get a trained bystander to someone in cardiac arrest Photo issued by GoodSAMapp of a as quickly person using a mobile phone to live as possible, stream an accident because minutes

About 1000 paramedics are already signed up as “Good Samaritans” and more than 100,000 trusted responders could eventually be involved. “An army of life savers, if you like, who are out there able to respond and support our paramedics,” Mr Walker said. Premier Daniel Andrews said the launch follows a successful four-month trial in which two people were successfully resuscitated from cardiac arrest. “Minutes matter, seconds matter, in terms of saving lives,” Mr Andrews said. “This is all about using modern technology to match the best skills with those who need them the most.” GoodSAM is being rolled out to trusted emergency agencies and paramedics, firefighters, doctors, nurses and others can become responders.

UBER INVESTIGATING SLEEPY DRIVER IN VICTORIA

U

ber says claims a Melbourne driver fell asleep at the wheel are “very concerning” and the ride share company is investigating. A young woman, named Angelica, filed a complaint with Uber after her driver allegedly fell asleep and drifted across lanes on the Eastern Freeway. “He actually dozed off and went left four lanes, and actually went off an exit, until he woke up,” she told Radio 3AW recently. Angelica, who did not give her surname, says her trip from the CBD to Wantirna South also took twice as long as usual, because the sleepy driver kept changing course. Uber responded saying they were investigating the matter. “What has been described is very concerning,” a spokesperson told AAP. “We take reports of unsafe driving very seriously.” Angelica filed a complaint with Uber and received a refund, but she said the driver “should not be on the roads”. Uber said dangerous driving breached guidelines and can result in the driver losing access to the app. The company said it continued to work on safety improvements and urged riders with safety concerns to make contact through the app.

Erdogan finishes Uber in Turkey

T

urkey’s President Tayyip Erdogan has said ride hailing app Uber is finished in Turkey, following pressure from Istanbul taxi drivers who said it was providing an illegal service and called for it to be banned. About 17,400 taxis operate in Istanbul, home to about a fifth of Turkey’s population of 81 million people, and since Uber entered the country in 2014 tensions have risen sharply. Erdogan’s statement came after new regulations were announced in recent weeks tightening transport licensing requirements, making it more difficult for drivers to register with Uber and threatening a twoyear ban for violations. “This thing called Uber emerged. That business is finished. That does not exist anymore,” he said in a speech in Istanbul late on Friday. “We have our taxi system. Where does this (Uber) come from? It is used in

Europe, I do not care about that. We will decide by ourselves,” added Erdogan, who is running for re-election in three weeks. Uber had no immediate response to his comment. After the transport licensing changes were announced it said it wanted to work with all sides to improve transport and to be “a true partner to Turkey for the long term”. Uber said that about 2000 yellow cab drivers use its app to find customers, while another 5000 work for UberXL, using large vans to transport groups to parties, or take people with bulky luggage to Istanbul’s airports. It declined to reveal the number of Uber users in Turkey, where it operates in Istanbul, and in the resort towns of Bodrum and Cesme in the summer months. Earlier this year, Istanbul’s taxi drivers took Uber to court accusing it of hindering their business and operating illegally. Several reports said that Uber vehicles, drivers and customers were either mistreated, threatened or faced violence by yellow taxi drivers.

As well as topping both of the end-of-year lists, Sheeran’s song Castle on the Hill was his second

entry in the top three most played tracks of the year. The Suffolk-raised musician finished ahead of Little Mix, Coldplay and Calvin Harris to take the crown of most played artist. Electronic band Clean Bandit’s collaboration with Zara Larsson, Symphony, was sandwiched between Sheeran’s tracks as the second most played track of 2017.

RICHARD GERE HAPPY TO BE MARRIED AGAIN A

ctor Richard Gere says he is the “happiest man in the universe” after marrying his third wife Alejandra Silva in April. The Pretty Woman star, 68, tied the knot with the Spanish activist, 35, in an Indian-inspired ceremony at Gere’s ranch outside of New York. The couple arrived together at the ceremony in a tuk-tuk. In an interview with Hello! magazine, Gere said: “I’m the happiest man in the universe. “How could I not be? I’m married to a beautiful woman who is smart, sensitive, committed to helping people, who’s fun, patient, who knows how to forgive, who’s a great cook - and who makes the best salads in the world! “Alejandra meditates, she’s a vegetarian, a great mother, has the touch of an angel and she’s also Spanish - the land of kings and queens, of Cervantes and Bunuel. You can’t get any better than that.” The couple met after the Hollywood star stayed at a hotel Silva’s family owns in Positano in

Italy in 2014. Silva is an activist who runs a charity that aims to eradicate homelessness in Spain. Her foundation hosted a screening of Gere’s film The Dinner in 2017. She revealed that Gere sent her flowers until she agreed to date him and he regularly writes songs for her.

Speaking about the first time they met, Silva said: “A friend introduced us, we looked at each other and felt a very strong connection. “We couldn’t stop looking at each other all night, and since then we haven’t been apart.” Gere was previously

married to supermodel Cindy Crawford from 1991 to 1995 and actress Carey Lowell from 2002-2016, with whom he had his 18-year-old son Homer. Silva has a five-year old son from a previous marriage.

MISS AMERICA DROPPING SWIMSUIT COMPETITION T

he Miss America Organisation is dropping the swimsuit competition from its nationally televised broadcast, saying it will no longer judge contestants on their appearance. The competition began nearly 100 years ago in Atlantic City, New Jersey as a bathing beauty contest designed to keep tourists coming to the seaside resort in the weekend after Labour Day. But it has run into resistance to the swimsuit, and to a lesser extent, evening gown competitions, that had come by some to be seen as outdated. An email scandal last December in which former Miss America officials denigrated the intelligence, appearance and sex lives of former title winners led to a shake-up at the top, and the group’s top three leadership positions are now held by women. Gretchen Carlson, a former Miss America who is head of the organisation’s board of trustees, made the announcement on Tuesday on “Good Morning America.”

“We’re not going to judge you on your appearance because we are interested in what makes you you,” she said. Carlson, whose sexual harassment lawsuit against Fox News Chairman Roger Ailes led to his departure, said the board has heard from potential contestants saying, “We don’t want to be out there in high heels and swimsuits.” “Guess what?” she said. “You don’t have to anymore.” Asked if she was worried the show’s television ratings might suffer because of the elimination of swimsuits, Carlson said she was not, adding that the swimsuit portion is not the highest rated section of the broadcast. Viewers seem to be more interested in the talent competition, she said. She also said the group would make changes to the evening wear portion of the competition, adding it would not judge women on their chosen attire. “It’s what comes out of their mouths that we care about,” she said. The changes will start with this year’s broadcast on September 9.

Meet Rusty

I’m just so happy to be around people and have friends. I also love playing and having plenty of toys to keep me company. I haven’t had the chance to live with a loving family before, so I know the best is yet to come. I love people the best, but could go home with another friendly dog- I especially love other greyhounds! Little kids might be a bit much for me, and I unfortunately can’t live with small animals because of my racing history. If you choose me, I’ll remind you constantly just how much you’ve changed my life. RSPCA NO. 892098

The car is seen as crucial to the electric car company’s profitability at a time when it is battling to reverse production shortfalls, confronting reports of crashes involving its vehicles and facing increased scepticism over its finances. On Twitter, Musk said the fully-loaded Model 3, with allwheel drive, a dual motor and a 310-mile (499-km) range - but excluding its vaunted Autopilot

the Model 3 and it was a thrill to drive, it had “big flaws.” Tesla’s stopping distance of 152 feet (46 m) when braking at 60 miles per hour (100 km per hour) was “far worse” than any contemporary car tested by the magazine and about seven feet longer than the stopping distance of a Ford F-150 fullsized pickup, it said. Tesla said its own testing had found braking distances of 133 feet on average using the 18” Michelin all season tyre, and as low as 126 feet with all tyres currently available. Socceroos Arzani the World Cup’s youngest

I

t’s official; Socceroos winger Daniel Arzani is the youngest player at the World Cup. The 19-year-old is the only man born in 1999 to be heading to Russia after FIFA released the final squad lists of each of the 32 nations on Tuesday (AEST). Poland had selected Sebastian Szymanski, five months Arzani’s junior, in its extended group, but the midfielder has missed the cut for the final squad. That move confirms Arzani as the youngest man at the 2018 tournament. Arzani’s run to the Socceroos squad has been spectacular and unexpected since making a first start for Melbourne City last August in the FFA Cup. The raw talent has just 16 starts in his professional career and made a debut for Australia off the bench in Friday’s 4-0 friendly win over Czech Republic. Arzani is joined by Kylian Mbappe, of group stage opponents France, and England defender Trent Alexander-Arnold as one of just seven teenagers at the tournament. Another of Australia’s

opponents, Denmark’s Christian Eriksen, was the youngest player at the 2010 World Cup at 18 years and four months of age. At the other end of the spectrum, striker Tim Cahill is the fourth oldest player to be heading to Russia. Australia’s all-time leading scorer, who mentored Arzani at City prior to his departure from the A-League, is gunning to play and score at a fourth World Cup. That accomplishment would put the 38-year-old on a par with legendary Brazilian Pele and German pair Uwe Seeler and Miroslav Klose as the only men to score at four tournaments. But Cahill is a fair way short of the oldest player in Russia. That honour belongs to Egypt captain and goalkeeper Essan El-Hadary, who will debut at the World Cup as a 45-year-old. The gloveman was just 17 when the Pharaohs last qualified for the tournament. Mexican defender Rafael Marquez, at 39, and Russia’s Sergey Ignashevich are the only other men born in the 1970s to make it to the 2018 event.

James Sutherland to stand down as Cricket Australia CEO

C

ricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland has resigned, denying the sport’s recent balltampering crisis was the catalyst that ended his 17-year tenure. Sutherland has given 12 months’ notice, with the former first-class cricketer to continue in the post until his replacement is found. Sutherland was appointed in 2001 as Malcolm Speed’s successor at the then Australian Cricket Board, overseeing plenty of highs and lows in a remarkably long tenure for a CEO of a major sporting body. Instrumental in the formation of the successful men’s and women’s Big Bash Leagues, he more recently proved a circuit-breaker in last year’s ugly pay dispute and helped sign the lucrative new broadcast rights deal in April. However, Sutherland’s tenure has also featured a handful of scandals involving the national team - including two that led to the exits of coaches Mickey

Arthur and Darren Lehmann. The 52-year-old insisted in Cape Town two months ago that he had no intention to stand down in the wake of Australia’s premeditated plan to cheat by scuffing the ball with sandpaper. Public heat was turned on Sutherland over the unprecedented saga which led to skipper Steve Smith and vicecaptain David Warner being banned for 12 months and prompted ongoing reviews into the culture at CA and in the team. But Sutherland,

flanked by chairman David Peever in Melbourne on Wednesday morning, told reporters his departure plan had been in the works for years. “It (the ball-tampering saga) hasn’t had a bearing on my decision. David and I have been talking about this for two years,” Sutherland told reporters. “It’s something I’ve been talking about for a long time. “It’d be silly for me to say anything other than I want to continue in the role (in the immediate aftermath of public outrage that followed

“SUTHERLAND’S TENURE HAS ALSO FEATURED A HANDFUL OF SCANDALS...”

the cheating scandal). “After nearly 20 years at Cricket Australia and 17 years as chief executive the time is right for me and my family.” Sutherland thanked Peever and his five predecessors for “having the confidence in me, and their friendship, support and counsel”. “My successor will have a strong and stable platform to lead our sport,” Sutherland said. “My overwhelming feeling today is a sense of gratitude. I feel fortunate.” Peever, who confirmed he will serve another term as chairman, thanked Sutherland for his “wonderful service to the game”. “When he started in the role he was younger than then captain Steve Waugh. He carries himself with humility and dignity,” Peever said. “The whole time I’ve been chairman, we’ve been talking about what the best time is.” Peever revealed Sutherland was close to resigning after the 2017-18 Ashes success but the pair agreed he should stay on until negotiations with new TV partners Fox Sports and the Seven Network were complete.

KYRGIOS FIT AND READY FOR GRASS SEASON A fit and refreshed Nick Kyrgios says he’s ready to bury the injury hell memory that marred his 2017 Wimbledon campaign. Concerns about an elbow problem in his serving arm saw the world No.23 withdraw from the French Open on the eve of his scheduled first-round clash with former Australian Davis Cup teammate Bernard Tomic. The decision to pull out of Roland Garros cast doubts about whether or not he’d be fit enough to play at Wimbledon, which starts on July 2. However, Kyrgios said he felt good during a doubles match at the Surbiton International Challenger Tour tournament, where he was the surprise star attraction at the low-key event in suburban south-west London. Playing with American Jordan Withrow against Indian pair Siriam Balaji and Vishnu Vardhan, Kyrgios finished on the losing side, going down 7-6 (7-2) 3-6 10-8 - with the final set being

decided on super tiebreak. However, he moved freely and served well during the 90-minute encounter. “It’s disappointing to lose, but it’s tough on grass, especially in doubles, and anything can happen in super break,” Kyrgios said. “I was serving 100 per cent, and I thought I served really well. “I didn’t put myself under any pressure and will play singles in Stuttgart next week.” Kyrgios retired injured in both his first-round clashes at Wimbledon and Queen’s Club last year after defying medical advice and playing at the French Open. He said this year he was given the same advice by his support staff and reluctantly listened to what they had to say to give himself the best chance to succeed on his favourite surface. “I couldn’t play the clay-court season last year properly because of a hip injury and at Queen’s I slipped over and re-injured it and couldn’t play Wimbledon,” he said.

“I didn’t have the chance to play in one of my favourite tournaments last year, but this year I feel pain-free and that is all I can ask for. “It was massive call not to play in Paris. When I saw my draw, I had the opportunity to do well. “But I didn’t want to put my grass-court season in jeopardy. “I made a more mature decision this year. “I had a lot of doctors and medical people telling me it was the smart move.” Kyrgios is once again travelling with his mother, who will spend the next month with him. He appeared to be in a positive frame of mind, cracking jokes with photographers and ball kids on court and posing for selfies with school

children. “I haven’t been in this head space for a while where I am looking forward to going out to training,” he said. “I think playing doubles has helped me enjoy myself again and I am going to stay here for the next few days and practice before going back playing singles again.”

MAYWEATHER IS WORLD’S HIGHEST PAID ATHLETE

R

etired boxer Floyd Mayweather has reclaimed first place from football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo in Forbes’ 2018 list of the world’s 100 highest-paid athletes. The 41-year-old American’s earnings from last year’s fight with Irishman Conor McGregor made him the world’s best paid for the fourth time in seven years, with $US285 million. Real Madrid striker Ronaldo ($US108 million) fell to third, behind soccer rival Lionel Messi ($US111 million). Only the top three had earnings surpassing $US100 million. Irish mixed martial artist McGregor ($US99 million) and

Paris St Germain’s Neymar ($US90 million) were fourth and fifth, respectively, but for the first time since 2010 there was not a single woman on the list. Serena Williams, winner of 23 grand slam tennis singles titles, was the sole female representative last year but she has since largely been inactive owing to pregnancy and giving birth to her daughter Alexis in September. Though still substantial, her $US18 million off-court earnings from sponsors were insufficient for her to make the top 100. Stafford (American football) concluded the top 10. Barcelona’s Argentine star Messi narrowly surpassed Ronaldo after signing a new contract at Barcelona, but the Portuguese, Mayweather and golfer Tiger Woods - this year ranked 16th - remained the only three to top the best-paid list during the past 18 years. Fourth-placed McGregor’s earnings represented almost double that of fourtime Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton ($US51 million).

T

he International Boxing Federation has stripped Gennady Golovkin of his middleweight title after he failed to set up a mandatory defence against Ukrainian Sergiy Derevyanchenko. Golovkin was scheduled for a rematch against his WBC mandatory challenger Saul “Canelo” Alvarez on May 5 but the Mexican withdrew from the fight after being suspended by the Nevada State Athletic Commission in April. Golovkin, who had held the IBF title since October 2015, defended his WBA, WBC and IBO belts against Vanes Martirosyan instead in a fight that was not sanctioned by the IBF. The IBF’s mandatory challenger bout was next in the rotation and the organisation ruled in a meeting on May 22 that Golovkin had until June 6 to agree

fight terms with Derevyanchenko. “After a lengthy review and period of deliberation, the International Boxing Federation has vacated the IBF Middleweight title held by Gennady Golovkin,” the IBF said in a statement on Wednesday. “The IBF had to enforce the penalty under Rule 5H for Golovkin having participated in an unsanctioned contest within Time his weight class and declare the IBF Middleweight title vacant. 0027 0626 “The IBF will identify the two TU 1321 leading available contenders and 1858 order them to negotiate to fight 0112 for the vacant title.” 0710

MAROONS HAVE COME BACK FROM WORSE: WALTERS

L

INDIGENOUS CRICKETERS PUSH FOR BBL ROUND

A

ustralia’s leading indigenous cricketers are pushing for their cultures to be celebrated during a stretch of the Big Bash League (BBL). D’Arcy Short, who is poised to make his ODI debut this month, and Dan Christian, currently in England as part of the squad marking the 150th anniversary of the 1868 Aboriginal team that toured the UK, are among those to have discussed the concept. The BBL doesn’t have specific rounds like the AFL and NRL or the football codes’ relatively high percentage of indigenous players. But the Twenty20 competition shapes as an ideal platform for Cricket Australia (CA) to continue work in the long-neglected areas of indigenous participation and engagement. BBL and women’s BBL games in Alice Springs earlier this year showed what was possible. Players connected with the local community at clinics and coaching courses, while both teams wore uniforms designed by Aboriginal artists. “It was a great start,” Christian told AAP. “However with so many indigenous men and women now playing in the BBL and WBBL, I think it would be great for every player to be able to celebrate their culture and our teammates to learn more about our culture via a full indigenous round.” It’s understood BBL boss Kim McConnie is mulling how best to approach a leaguewide recognition of indigenous

contribution to the sport, which has the potential to help educate players, officials and fans alike while promoting indigenous role models. The topic is certain to come up when Christian and Ashleigh Gardner captain men’s and women’s Aboriginal XIs in England this month. Christian, a proud Wiradjuri man, featured in 19 one-day internationals and 16 T20 internationals. Short, who is in the mix to partner Aaron Finch at the top of the order in this month’s ODI series, joined Christian and Gardner earlier this year in a small group of indigenous players to have represented Australia. The next cricketer on that list could easily be Brendan Doggett, a talented paceman who earned his maiden Australia A call-up after impressing for Brisbane Heat and Queensland in 2017-18. Doggett, who will play alongside Christian and Scott Boland on the Aboriginal XI tour, feels a BBL-wide celebration would help CA build on recent rises in indigenous participation while prompting plenty of discussions at the eight franchises. “It’s definitely something we’re all working towards,” Doggett said. “We all talk about it. I know D’Arcy Short is a big advocate. “It (Worimi heritage) is something I am proud of. My teammates often ask questions and it’s always good to talk to them about it.”

ife after the Big Three may have started ominously for Queensland. But coach Kevin Walters believes the Maroons have come back from a “much worse place” to lift the trophy after NSW’s 22-12 State of Origin series opening win in Melbourne. A James Tedesco-inspired NSW appeared to come of age by drawing first blood at the MCG on Wednesday despite fielding an unprecedented 11 rookies.

It was a nightmare start to a new Maroons era without ex-skipper Cameron Smith, Cooper Cronk and Johnathan Thurston, all of whom have retired from representative football. But Walters says it could be worse. Time and again Queensland have bucked the odds to bounce back and win the series. The Maroons coach hinted Queensland were ready to do it again thanks to the confidence gained from last year’s underdog heroics.

Stop having medal DERS A E R targets: Ian Thorpe VERY FORTNIGHT E ed to: Covering, but not restrict I OONDAH an Thorpe has called for change with how sporting bodies approach major competitions like the Olympics in a bid to ease the burden on athletes. The Australian swimming legend believes there is too much pressure placed on competitors when organisations set medal targets for events. Instead of being ambitious in setting high goals, Thorpe says it’s only having a detrimental effect on athletes’ performances. “I don’t think it’s beneficial when sporting organisations are talking about how many gold medals we’ll win at a competition and that will be the highest number we’ve ever won,” Thorpe said on Tuesday. “It puts an immense amount of pressure on athletes around something they have no control over. “What I’d prefer to see happen is we know the athletes represent our communities, they’ll represent the diversity of this country and they’re going to represent it well to the best of our ability and that will lead to gold medals.” Before Rio 2016, the Australian Olympic Committee predicted Australia would win 13 gold medals, for an overall tally of 37. The Australian team returned with eight golds and a total of 29.

Swimmer Cate Campbell said she had the “greatest choke in history” after finishing sixth in the 100m freestyle final when starting as the hot favourite. Thorpe, who won five Olympic gold medals, is hoping to influence change on athletes’ mental health and performance after taking on a role with the Australian Institute of Sport. Thorpe is better placed than most to help the AIS after being thrust into the spotlight at 14, becoming one of Australia’s highest-profile athletes and experiencing mental health difficulties, including depression, after retiring. The 35-year-old launched the AIS’ Athlete Wellbeing and Engagement division at a twoday summit in Canberra. Thorpe says the AIS needs to be the “world’s leader” in looking after its athletes. “This (the program) is probably the biggest gift the AIS has given to the sporting community, not the athletes, it’s our knowledge bank we’ve been able to build up over decades here. “It’s the most valuable tool that we have to be able to use to continue to progress sporting performances.” Fellow Australian Olympic gold medallists Kim Brennan and Alisa Camplin are also in Canberra for the launch.

Top with 10 wins from 11. The Eagles were meant to be on the slide after losing a batch of experienced players. But Adam Simpson’s side is setting a hot pace which could lead to two home finals. Win them, they’re in the big dance. Five home games to come and they play Brisbane away in the final round.

RICHMOND. GRADE A

Second with nine wins, two losses. What a premiership defence thus far. The Tigers continue to be a masterly benchmark of the pressurepacked style which delivered last year’s flag. They only travel interstate three more times and meet the Suns, Bombers and Bulldogs in a kind run into the finals. Top two beckons.

MELBOURNE. GRADE A

Third with eight wins, three losses and a whopping percentage - 140.2 - which will come in handy for top-four reckoning later in the year. The Demons are the league’s highest scorers. Six more MCG games but a Darwin game, two trips to Adelaide and to Perth and Geelong in the run home. Not quite a top-four lock, but close.

spot. Five more Etihad Stadium fixtures with away games against Adelaide, Brisbane and Geelong. Can they keep up their hectic pace?

COLLINGWOOD: B+

Seventh with seven wins, four losses. A heartening half-season from Nathan Buckley’s Magpies, who have finally found attacking potency - only the top three Eagles, Tigers and Demons have scored more than the Pies. Collingwood have seven more MCG matches to come, and trips to Gold Coast, Sydney and Fremantle. Looking likely finalists.

PORT ADELAIDE: GRADE B

Eighth with six wins, four losses. Played a game less than the rest and actually rose to eighth spot despite a defeat last Saturday. The Power remain an enigma: contender or pretender? Port have a nice stretch of eight home games to come, and away games in Melbourne, Perth and Ballarat. Well-placed for a late dash.

ADELAIDE: GRADE C+

Ninth with six wins, five losses. So much was expected of the Crows but injuries have cruelled last year’s losing grand finalist. They’ll hope the bad luck eases SYDNEY: GRADE A as they face a demanding stretch Fourth with eight wins, three losses. The perennial finalists will just to make the play-offs: five home games but meetings be there again. Five more home with finals-bound West Coast, games and an encounter with GWS to come. West Coast have taken the back in a month or so, GWS has the cattle for a late charge. The cake as 2018’s biggest surprise Giants’ fate will be decided in packet. But the Kangas aren’t the final three rounds: hosting far behind. Widely tipped to be Adelaide and Sydney before a trip down the bottom, Brad Scott’s to play Melbourne. Thereabouts side is pushing for a top-four for finals.

ESSENDON: GRADE D

Twelfth with four wins, seven losses. Such a disappointment, the Bombers. A season-opening victory, but also winless for a month to slip off the finals pace. Travel to the Gabba and Perth in consecutive weeks. And John Worsfold’s side play West Coast, the Tigers and Sydney among trips to the Gold Coast and Port Adelaide.

FREMANTLE: GRADE C

Thirteenth with four wins, seven losses. The Dockers are about where most pundits had them pre-season. Competitive, tough to beat at home, but short of the finals pace. Still have six home games and one against the Eagles to come before finishing with a tough two: the Cats away and Collingwood.

Suns have failed to shine again. They’re by some margin the league’s lowest scorers and face Sydney, Melbourne and Richmond in what is a horror month-long block to come.

ST KILDA: GRADE F

Sixteenth with one win, nine losses, one draw. The Saints remain mired in mediocrity. Coach Alan Richardson’s rebuild is now in a fifth year - and it’s as fruitless as those before. Eight more games in Melbourne and they meet five clubs currently stationed in the top eight. Alsorans again.

BRISBANE: GRADE D

Seventeenth with one win, 10 losses. Judged more kindly than the Saints as the Lions were always expected to get nowhere this season. Competitive in patches but miles off being WESTERN BULLDOGS: GRADE D a formidable foe. Six more Fourteenth with four wins, home games and trips to Perth, seven losses. BANNED FYFE OUT OF AFL BROWNLOW CONTENTION

F

remantle superstar Nat Fyfe is in danger of joining unwanted company after the AFL tribunal upheld his one-

game striking ban. North Melbourne’s Corey McKernan and Western Bulldogs’ star Chris Grant could have won Brownlow Medals in 1996 and 1997 respectively but were ineligible. Both received bans during their stellar seasons, and that fate could yet befall Fyfe. The 26-year-old had been one of the main Brownlow fancies having averaged just more than 30 possessions across 11 games and booted eight goals. But Fyfe’s hopes of winning a second Brownlow Medal this season were dashed when the Dockers failed to convince the tribunal he didn’t intentionally strike Collingwood’s Levi Greenwood. “Unfortunately, the tribunal decision was that the week stands,” Fyfe told reporters in Perth.

DONS’ DANIHER UNSURE WHEN HE’S BACK IN AFL

J

oe Daniher’s best hope of an AFL return is late in the season, with the injured Essendon star in the dark about how long it will take. The Bombers’ reigning best and fairest champion has not played since round seven because of osteitis pubis. Daniher had struggled for form, only kicking eight goals in seven games. The Bombers revealed this week that Daniher is yet to resume running. “It’s probably a little slower than I’d like, as any footballer

McDonald extends deal with Demons K

ey forward Tom McDonald has inked a new four- year deal that will see him stay at the Demons until the end of the 2022 AFL season. The 132-gamer has arguably been in career-best form since returning from a foot injury in round six, becoming one of Melbourne’s most valuable players. The 25-year-old has kicked 19 goals in his past six matches, including 15 majors in his previous

four games. General manager of football operations Josh Mahoney said McDonald, in his eighth year with Melbourne, was an important part of the club’s future. “Tom was a free agent this year and his signing is another positive sign for the environment that is being created at the club,” Mahoney said. “Tom has been providing us a great target and working well with our other forward options.”

After the world No.7 French come Denmark and Peru - ranked 12th and 11th in the global standings. The Socceroos need to defy two of those sides to continue on past their group. Chief among that challenge will be subduing Christian Eriksen, the Tottenham Hotspur playmaker who runs the show for Denmark. After the opener in Kazan, Australia plays the Danes on June 21 in nearby Samara. If Australia’s hopes are still alive by the final match, they’ll face the high-intensity South Americans on June 26 in Winter Olympics host city Sochi. It’s an arduous challenge which is why they’ve turned to an experienced hand to steer the side. In the wake of Ange Postecoglou’s remarkable

decision to turn down the chance to lead the Socceroos to a World Cup he qualified them for, Dutchman van Marwijk has been handed the reins. FFA hope the 66-year-old’s record in taking his native Holland to the 2010 final will stand up when he returns to the showpiece event. It’s a risk, given the pragmatic coach has little time to implement his plans - many of which stand in opposition to Postecoglou’s style before the tournament kicks off. The Socceroos are in the middle of four weeks together, including a training camp in Turkey and two friendly matches, to embed a game plan and belief that they can succeed in Russia. They believe it’s been a most productive time, with morale high and growing confidence from their 4-0 result against the Czechs.

SOCCEROOS VOL 1 | EDITION № 05 14 - 27 June 2018

embrace underdog tag at Cup

W

hichever way you cut it, the Socceroos will be up against it at the World Cup. A limited squad, tough group and backroom shake-up make Australia outsiders to progress from the group stage in Russia, let alone impact the tournament in the knock-out rounds. But it’s for these reasons the most-capped Socceroo of all time, Mark Schwarzer, believes Australia is a chance to emulate the golden generation of 2006 and reach the last 16. “We’re seen as the underdog, the team less likely, and I don’t mind that,” Schwarzer told AAP. “I’m quietly confident. “We’re in a group that’s doable. I say it’s doable because it’s achievable to get

out of the group if things go our way. “When teams underestimate us, that’s when we’re at our best.” The Socceroos have at least one high-profile supporter, with legendary Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho picking Australia to get out of Group C in second place. Yet Australia’s squad has it all to prove on the world stage. Just six players have previously travelled to a World Cup, led by Mile Jedinak and Tim Cahill, who remain lion-hearted leaders but with their best football in the rear-view mirror. The Socceroos will be led by next-gen players in Aaron Mooy, Tom Rogic and Trent Sainsbury in Russia, all on their World Cup debut.
