WEATHER BUREAU HIT BY TWO BITCOIN SCAMS

Final destroyer to be launched in Adelaide T

A

ustralia’s third and final air warfare destroyer, the Sydney, has been launched in Adelaide, as the $9 billion program to significantly bolster the nation’s defence capability nears an end. The Sydney was lowered into the water in Adelaide on Saturday as work continues to

complete its fit-out ahead of sea trials. Like its sister ships, the HMAS Hobart and the Brisbane, the Sydney is 146 metres long with a range of about 5000 nautical miles, or about 9000 kilometres, and a top speed of more than 28 knots. It will have a crew of 186 and is powered by a combination of gas and diesel turbines driving twin propellers. The destroyers are armed with harpoon missile systems and have missile decoy technology.

wo scandals linking the Australian weather bureau to cryptocurrency are being claimed as coincidental. An advertising company remains suspended by the Bureau of Meteorology after ads linking to a scam article about Bitcoin appeared on the site in January and February. The organisation’s Melbourne offices were raided by federal police later in February over allegations two employees had been using the bureau’s powerful computers to mine cryptocurrencies. BoM director Andrew Johnson told a Senate hearing on Monday there was “no connection whatsoever” between the two events. The probe into data mining had been underway for a considerable time before the Australian Federal Police made the decision to act in February, he said. But he was unable to answer questions from Centre Alliance senator Rex Patrick about the progress of that investigation.

Dr Johnson did confirm the advertising agency responsible for the fraudulent ads in January and February remains blacklisted because of concerns about its ability to block activity. The ads linked to a news story about Tesla boss Elon Musk on a fake CNN look-alike website which then linked users to scam Bitcoin sites. Dr Johnson said it was a constant battle against those with malicious intent but the bureau used a four-stage review policy used to monitor ads from a second organisation. Advertising on the site brings in around $4 million annually.

said the prince appears to have toned down his previous image of “a playboy prince”. “I think the military has done a lot to help him grow up and that’s made him a more mature person, which actually I think will make him a much rounder partner in the marriage that he’s about to undertake,” he told Forces TV. Friend Dave Henson, a retired Army captain and Paralympic bronze 200m medallist, believes Prince Harry will one day make a good father. “I think he’s like any other service man or woman, we are all big kids really and actually I think the joy of having kids is that you get to be a big kid again, and I think he’ll love doing it,” he said. In a decade-long Army career which ended in 2015, Prince Harry has had two frontline tours of duty in Afghanistan. He was devastated in 2007 when plans for him to serve in Iraq fell through because of security threats. Later that year, he achieved his dream of seeing frontline action, spending 10 weeks in Afghanistan as a forward air controller, coordinating air strikes on Taliban positions. His tour was cut short when foreign websites broke a media blackout on reporting the details. The prince retrained and qualified as an Apache helicopter pilot. In September 2012 he made it back for a second tour of duty as an Apache co-pilot gunner. His career took a different direction when it was announced he was to start page 12 a new Army staff officer role in London in 2014.

TRUMP, KIM TO MEET IN SINGAPORE ON JUNE 12

U

S President Donald Trump has high hopes of “doing something very meaningful” to curtail North Korea’s nuclear ambitions at a summit in Singapore next month, after Pyongyang smoothed the way for talks by freeing three American prisoners. The date and location of the first-ever meeting of a sitting US president and a North Korean leader was announced by Trump on Twitter. “The highly anticipated meeting between Kim Jong Un and myself will take place in Singapore on June 12th. We will both try to make it a very special moment for World Peace!” Trump wrote. He made the announcement after a US government aircraft touched down at Joint Base Andrews near Washington carrying the Americans who were released by North Korea in a move to clear the way for the bilateral summit. Trump faces a difficult task persuading Kim to abandon nuclear weapons and ballistic missile tests that heightened US-North Korean tensions throughout 2017.

The two men exchanged fiery rhetoric last year over North Korea’s attempts to build a nuclear weapon that could reach the United States. But tensions have since eased, starting around the time of the North’s participation in the Winter Olympics in South Korea in February. Trump greeted the freed Americans in the early-morning hours. He said on their arrival that he believed Kim, who has led North Korea for seven years and is believed to be in his mid-30s, wanted to bring his country “into the real world.” “I think we have a very good chance of doing something very meaningful,” Trump said. “My proudest achievement will be - this is part of it - when we denuclearise that entire peninsula.” New US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has visited Pyongyang twice in recent weeks - once as head of the CIA - but there has been no sign that he cleared up the central question of whether North Korea will be willing to bargain away nuclear weapons that its rulers have long

seen as crucial to their survival. Trump is embarking on the meeting with Kim after sending shockwaves through the world on Tuesday by announcing the United States was pulling out of a 2015 accord imposing international oversight of Iran’s nuclear program. The move raised questions over whether North Korea might now be less inclined to negotiate its own nuclear deal with Washington. Chuck Schumer, the top Democrat in the US Senate, warned Trump against going too far, too fast in Singapore. The Republican president, Schumer said, should insist upon strong, verifiable disarmament

commitments from North Korea. “I worry that this president, in his eagerness to strike a deal and get the acclaim and a photo op, will strike a quick one and a bad one, not a strong one, not a lasting one,” Schumer said. The choice of Singapore will put the summit on friendly turf for Trump, as the island nation is a strong US ally and the US Navy frequently visits its port. US officials had looked at several sites other than Singapore for the historic meeting. Trump’s own preference was for the demilitarised zone between the two Koreas, but aides argued it would look too much like Trump going to Kim’s turf.

‘BIG FELLA’ A

William Siryani leaves the Downing Centre Court in Sydney, Thursday April 5, 2018

JAILED OVER NSW DRUG SYNDICATE

frontman for a sophisticated Sydney drug syndicate dubbed The Rock Act has been jailed for at least three-and-a-half years. William Siryani, who called himself “The Big Fella”, has pleaded guilty in the NSW District Court to supplying a prohibited drug on an ongoing basis and knowingly directing the activities of a criminal group in 2016. Acting Judge Paul Conlon jailed the 34-year-old on Monday, noting the gang duped its many customers who thought they were buying cocaine but who were supplied with cheaper methamphetamine. The undercover police operation, which monitored Siryani and about 17 co-accused, intercepted 11,500 voice calls and 48,500 text messages during a three-month sting. Investigators found Siryani and other managers directed more than 10 drivers or “runners”

seven days a week to deliver 0.5gram bags of methamphetamine, sold as $200 bags of cocaine to unsuspecting customers. As well as making sales and deliveries The Rock Club also sent out promotional text messages. “Hey guys, we’re out and about tonight. Don’t miss out on your Front Row Rock Show tickets @$200 each ticket. P.S. Have a great day,” one read. Siryani previously told the judge he spent all the profits he made on his 24-gram $6000-a-day cocaine habit, a claim the prosecutor submitted was an exaggeration. Judge Conlon noted Siryani was suffering from substance-abuse disorder and depression at the time. The judge jailed him for six years with a non-parole period of three years six months. “This court sees on a daily basis the extent of the devastation caused to individuals and families by the dissemination of drugs in the community,” he said.

lean out your wallet and check the fridge for a $55 million Powerball winning ticket that's yet to be claimed, more than four months after the draw. Tattslotto spokesman Matt Hart said it could be a local or even a visitor who's yet to discover they are multimillionaires from the January 11 draw, but so far, there's been no takers. “We do have people come forward days, months or years after ... usually in the wallet or on the fridge is where it normally tends to be,” he told AAP. The mystery winner of Australia's largest unclaimed prize bought their ticket at Scole Lotto and News in Brunswick, in Melbourne. If the money isn't claimed after six months, it will go to Victoria's State Revenue Office, but the ticket owner can still come forward thereafter and take their winnings.

“WEIGHED DOWN BY THE COSTLY CONFRONTATION WITH THE WEST...”

Putin

begins new term as Russian president P resident Vladimir Putin has stuck with his longserving prime minister in his first act after being sworn in for a new term, signalling that he would keep faith with a policy direction that has brought Russia into conflict with the West. Standing in the ornatelydecorated Andreyevsky Hall of the Grand Kremlin Palace, with his hand on a gold-embossed copy of the constitution, Putin, 65, swore to serve the Russian people, to safeguard rights and freedoms, and protect Russian sovereignty. Putin secured a new six-year term after more than 70 per cent of voters backed him in a March 18 presidential election. His most dangerous challenger, Alexei Navalny, was not allowed to take part and was detained at a protest called under the slogan: “Putin is not our tsar”. Soon after the inauguration ceremony, the Kremlin issued a statement saying that Putin had nominated Dmitry Medvedev again to be prime minister in his new term. Medvedev, a loyal Putin lieutenant, has held the job since 2012. Some Kremlin-watchers had speculated Putin might bring in a fresh face as prime minister to kick-start reforms of the sluggish economy and revive foreign investment curtailed by stand-offs with the West. By choosing Medvedev - seen by

people close to the Russian elite as a safe pair of hands whose chief quality is loyalty to his boss - Putin indicated he favoured continuity. The choice is also likely to be parsed by Kremlin-watchers for any clues about what happens after Putin’s current term ends in 2024. The constitution bars him from seeking a third consecutive term. When Putin came up against the same term limits in 2008, he got around the problem by anointing Medvedev as president, before taking back the job after one term. Some observers believe Putin, who has not anointed any heir apparent, could attempt the same manoeuvre a second time. Unveiling his nominees for the top posts in the new cabinet, Medvedev stuck mostly with familiar faces, including retaining Anton Siluanov as finance minister. Putin embarks on his new term, his fourth in total, buoyed by widespread popular support but also weighed down by the costly confrontation with the West, low economic growth, and uncertainty about what happens when his terms ends. In a speech after the swearingin ceremony, Putin said that in the next six years Russia would prove a strong, muscular player on the world stage, backed by a powerful military, while pushing hard to improve life for its

citizens at home. “Taking up this post, I feel a colossal sense of responsibility,” Putin told his audience of Russian officials and foreign dignitaries, among them former German chancellor Gerhard Schroeder. For the short journey from his office to the inauguration ceremony, Putin travelled in a new Russian-made limousine. From now on, the limousine will

replace the fleet of imported vehicles Putin uses, state television reported. The choice of transport chimes with a message, often repeated by Putin, that Russia must stand on its own feet and shake off its dependence on the West. Foreign diplomats see little prospect that Russia’s standoffs with the West that have dominated the past four years will ease during Putin’s new term.

BOURKE STREET RAMPAGE TRIAL - How Harry & Meghan fell in love Probe into accused Bourke St driver’s mind << cont. from front page...

Gargasoulas, 28, appeared before the Victorian Supreme Court via video link recently for an administrative update about his case. Gargasoulas has pleaded not guilty to six counts of murder and 28 charges of attempted murder over the Bourke Street mall rampage on January 20, 2017. Prosecutor Andrew Tinney SC said the Crown’s experts do not agree that Gargasoulas is unfit for trial. “There is a real and substantial question about the accused’s fitness to stand trial,” he told the court. The defence has previously said its experts believe the 28-year-old is unfit to stand trial. “Can you give me an indication where the conflict is?” Justice Lex Lasry asked. “Its effect, if I understand it,” Mr Tinney replied. It’s understood all the experts agree Gargasoulas suffers from

schizophrenia, but one crown expert holds a contrary view about how if affects his current mental state. Gargasoulas will face a five-day investigation hearing before a jury that will determine if he is fit to stand trial. Three experts are expected to give evidence at the hearing beginning on June 12. If found unfit, Gargasoulas would face a special hearing instead of a criminal trial to determine whether he is not guilty due to his mental impairment.

or Prince Harry, it was fate he met and fell in love with Meghan Markle - thanks to a mystery mutual friend who organised their blind date. Despite being from different backgrounds, the grandson of the Queen and the US actor clicked and their romance quickly developed into love. When interviewed on the day their engagement was announced, Harry described how destiny appeared to intervene in their lives. “So the fact that I fell in love with Meghan so incredibly quickly was sort of confirmation to me that everything - all the stars - were aligned.” The prince had never heard of the actor before their blind date in London in July 2016 and he quickly realised he had to make a memorable first impression. “I was like ‘OK, well, I’m going to have to up my game ... sit down and make sure I’ve got good chat’,” he said. What cemented their tentative relationship was a short break to Botswana where they “camped out with each other under the stars” over five days.

The pair share a strong bond through their philanthropy, with Prince Harry supporting military veterans and mental health organisations via his charity work, and Ms Markle pursuing her role as a humanitarian campaigner. It was Ms Markle who offered the biggest insight into their relationship when she was interviewed by Vanity Fair magazine in September 2017 after they had been dating for just over a year. “I can tell you that at the end of the day I think it’s really simple: We’re two people who are really happy and in love.”

Wallabies coach stands by under-fire Folau

W

allabies coach Michael Cheika is standing by Israel Folau, refusing to take issue with his match-winning fullback’s provocative online posts about homosexuality. Speaking for the first time since Folau sparked a storm of controversy six weeks ago with with the first of a series of divisive posts about gays, Cheika said anyone who disagreed with his religious beliefs - including homosexuals - should ignore them. The code-hopping superstar has suffered widespread backlash for publicising his extreme views, with the Wallabies’ major sponsor Qantas outraged and others including All Blacks halfback TJ Perenara pointing out Folau’s profound influence on vulnerable youngsters. Cheika, though, refused to be critical of the devout Christian when asked what would be his message to Folau if he was “a young gay rugby boy who’s ever read Izzy’s posts and wondering if he’d ever belong in rugby or in life”.

“There’s been a lot made of (this),” Cheika said on Fox Sports’ Kick and Chase program. “Self-esteem in people, no matter who they are, is extremely important - self belief, self esteem - and if that’s something that you don’t agree with, then you detach from that. “That way it’ll be, ‘he’s no longer my idol’ if that’s the case, if that affects (me) like that.” Cheika said the onus was also on parents to shield their children from potentially harmful posts, as they did from other teenage dangers. “You’ve got to protect those kids from everything that’s out there,” he said. “There’s other things out there that you might not like and that’s what it is. “Us as parents, which I am, and as coaches, which I try to do with the lads (we have to protect them) because it happens all round. “... players are getting the same in return: nasty messages (on) social media. “It’s about trying to build that self belief in them so they’re not

affected by those things because we don’t want people to be affected by stuff like that. That is 100 per cent clear.” Meanwhile, Cheika admitted he had no plans to shift Folau to the wing for the Wallabies this year, despite the NSW Waratahs using the dual international’s aerial skills with deadly effect on the flank in some games this season.

“Fullback for me. He’s too invaluable around defusing high balls,” the coach said. “You saw what he did on the weekend. If you want to get him on the edge to play kick ball to him, you can manufacture that to him, just like the Tahs did in that game when he was on edge. “He was devastating in that space.”

‘Loner’ student kills 10 at Texas school ownership and came about three months after 17 teens and educators were fatally shot in Parkland, Florida. Students said the gunman, identified as Dimitrios Pagourtzis, opened fire in an art class shortly before 8am (11pm AEST). Students and staff fled and a fire alarm triggered a full evacuation. Classmates described Pagourtzis as a quiet loner who played on the football team. On Friday, they said, he wore the trench coat to school in Santa 17-year-old student Fe, southeast of Houston, on a dressed in a trench coat day when temperatures topped and armed with a shotgun 32C. and pistol has opened fire at his Texas Governor Greg Abbott high school in Texas, killing nine said Pagourtzis obtained firearms students and a teacher before from his father, who had likely surrendering to officers. acquired them legally, and also Santa Fe High School, left behind explosive devices. southeast of Houston, joins a “Not only did he want to commit long list of US campuses where the shooting but he wanted students and faculty have been to commit suicide after the killed in a spray of gunfire. shooting,” Abbott told reporters, Friday’s shooting stoked the citing a police review of the nation’s debate over firearms suspect’s journals.

A

“He didn’t have the courage to commit suicide.” Ten people were wounded, Abbott said. Pagourtzis was charged with capital murder and denied bail at a brief court hearing on Friday. He spoke in a soft voice and said “Yes, sir” when asked if he wanted a court-appointed lawyer, along with other questions. Pagourtzis spared people he liked so he can have his story told, a charging document obtained by Reuters shows. Abbott said investigators had seen a “Born to Kill” T-shirt on the suspect’s Facebook page and authorities were examining his journal. But there were no outward signs he had been planning an attack, he said. It was the second mass shooting in Texas in less than a year. A man armed shot dead 26 people during Sunday prayers at a rural church in November. Flags in Texas and in many

other parts of the US flew at half-mast and a vigil was held on Friday night. Courtney Marshall, 15, said the gunman went into her art class shooting. “I wanted to take care of my friends but I knew I had to get out of there,” Marshall said, adding she saw at least one person hit. Two school officers engaged the shooter, including John Barnes, who was in critical condition after a gunshot wound almost caused him to bleed out, hospital officials said. US President Donald Trump called the massacre “absolutely horrific”. “My administration is determined to do everything in our power to protect our students, secure our schools and to keep weapons out of the hands of those who pose a threat to themselves and to others,” Trump said. No major federal gun controls have been imposed since the Parkland shooting.

HAWAII FACES NEW THREAT FROM VOLCANO H

awaii residents dealing with Kilauea’s volcanic eruption are facing a potentially deadly new challenge as lava that has reached the Pacific Ocean threatens to send up laze, a hazardous mix of glass particles and noxious gas. The new challenge came when a stream of lava from the volcano cut through Highway 137 on the south coast of Hawaii’s Big Island late on Saturday and poured into the sea, authorities said. The mix of erupting lava, which can reach 1093C, and sea water could send up plumes of laze, a mix of hydrochloric acid, steam and volcanic glass particles, Hawaii County Civil Defense said in a statement. “Be aware of the laze hazard and stay away from any ocean plume,” the agency said, warning that potential hazards include lung damage. Laze - a combination of “lava” and “haze” - killed two people in 2000 when a lava flow reached the coast, and even a wisp can irritate eyes and lungs and make it hard to breath, the US Geological Survey said. Acid rain from laze has a pH, a measure of a substance’s acidity or baseness, of between 1.5

“BE AWARE OF THE LAZE HAZARD AND STAY AWAY FROM ANY OCEAN PLUME”

and 3.5 and “has the corrosive properties of dilute battery acid,” the agency said. The public was warned to stay away from potential plumes of laze near where the lava is flowing into the ocean off Highway 137 near a state park.

An air quality index for Kona, about 64km northwest of the eruption site, was at “orange” level, meaning sensitive groups, such as older people and those with lung disease, could be affected. Kilauea, one of the world’s most active volcanoes,

has destroyed dozens of homes and sent thousands of residents fleeing as at least 22 volcanic vents have opened up since the latest upheaval began on May 3. Besides lava, the cracks have spewed life-threatening levels of toxic sulphur dioxide gas.

Age and disease-defying ‘holy grail’ drug

A

ustralian scientists say they’ve discovered an anti-ageing drug capable of tricking cells into thinking they’re younger and protecting us from disease. Queensland University of Technology researchers are developing a wonder drug with the potential to dramatically slow the ageing process and prevent or delay cancer, alzheimer’s, type 2 diabetes and arthritis. QUT Associate Professor Derek Richard says the big link between cancer and ageing

is the body’s ability to repair damaged DNA, which decreases as we get older. After years of study his team at the Cancer and Ageing Research Program believe they’ve found the holy grail of the scientific world - a “guardian angel” protein with the potential to keep people healthier for longer. “This new drug functions by restoring the activity of the DNArepairing, ‘super hero’ hSSB1 protein in our bodies and we can make cells believe that they are much younger than they actually are,” Professor Richard said.

Australian Scientist, 104, dies by assisted suicide “He Said He Would Have Preferred to Die in Australia”

Vic crackdown on ‘gay conversion therapy’

V

ictorian practitioners of so-called “gay conversion therapy” could face prosecution following a state government-ordered inquiry. Health Minister Jill Hennessy has formally asked the Health Complaints Commissioner to investigate the “highly damaging” and “abhorrent” practice that purports to ‘cure’ homosexuality. “I have received correspondence from a victim of the practices of so-called ‘gay conversion therapy’ and ‘ex-gay ideology’,” the minister wrote in a letter to the commissioner, released on Thursday. “Victims of the practice have displayed poor mental and physical health outcomes. Some have tragically lost their lives to suicide.” The Health Complaints Commissioner has powers to investigate and prosecute. “Victorians who have been harmed through these rogue groups should contact the Commissioner immediately so these unlawful practices can be stopped and practitioners prosecuted,” Ms Hennessy said in a statement. The inquiry was triggered just weeks after Victorian Liberals president Michael Kroger had to

intervene to stop a motion on gay conversion therapy at the party’s state council meeting. The inquiry also comes after an online university survey found the majority of young LGBTI people fear being discriminated against if they report hate crimes to Victoria Police. The La Trobe University poll of 76 people, aged 16 to 25, found fewer than half “agreed” or “strongly agreed” they could trust police. More than 360 officers were also surveyed and the majority reported the LGBTI people they spoke to seemed to fear being outed or discriminated against. In a statement, Victoria Police said it had been working to improve its relationship with the LGBTI community. “We know that for young people, being recognised, acknowledged and valued for who they are is vital to their sense of self-worth and contributes to their willingness to engage with police,” Priority Communities Division Commander Stuart Bateson said. ustralia’s oldest scientist David Goodall showed humour and a twinge of impatience before he died in Switzerland from assisted suicide, uttering the last words: “This is taking a long time”. The 104-year-old took his own life on recently at a clinic in Basel, to the strains of Beethoven’s final symphony and surrounded by family. Professor Goodall did not have a terminal illness but his quality of life had deteriorated in recent years. He could not end his life in Australia, where assisted suicide is not legal, so took a one-way ticket from Perth to France last week to see relatives before arriving in Switzerland, where it is permitted. “He almost became a little impatient at the end, having to go through quite a few necessary formal steps that are part of the process,” Philip Nitschke, founder of right-to-die group Exit International, told AAP. “During the paperwork, he said ‘what are we waiting for?’ “His final words were ‘this is taking a long time’. “He’d been told that everything would be very quick and in some ways, there had been a few delays.” Prof Goodall was asked four questions to confirm he was still lucid and knew what he was about to do, the final being “What is going to happen when you press the button?” “He said ‘well, I hope my heart stops’,” Dr Nitschke said. “I think he was very clear what he was doing.” Dr Nitschke said Prof Goodall’s death was peaceful. “It was rather sad but eventually he got what he had wanted for

quite a while at the end of a long life,” he said. In his final hours, Prof Goodall enjoyed his favourite dinner: fish and chips and cheesecake. And in his final minutes, a German-sung version of the last movement of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Ode to Joy, was played in line with his wishes. Prof Goodall sang a few bars of the famous piece at his last press conference on Wednesday. The esteemed ecologist was bemused by enormous media interest in his story but saw it as an important opportunity to stimulate debate about voluntary euthanasia. “At my age, or less than my age, one wants to be free to choose the death when the death is at an appropriate time,” Prof Goodall told reporters. “I no longer want to continue life. “I’m happy to have a chance to end it.” He said he would have preferred to die in Australia. Prof Goodall spent his final full day exploring botanic gardens with three of his grandchildren, who said they were proud of his bravery in the face of great public attention and were glad he would die on his own terms. It is expected he will be cremated in Switzerland, with his ashes to remain in the country, while his family in Perth will hold a memorial in coming months. Pro-life organisation Cherish Life Queensland issued a statement saying Prof Goodall’s actions would encourage vulnerable people to follow his example. YouTube to launch music streaming service

DOG SAVES OWNER FROM

BROWN SNAKE

A

pitbull cross is being hailed a hero for pushing her owner out of the way of a deadly Eastern brown snake in far north Queensland. Teena Williams, 69, was cutting down bananas at her Millstream property, near Ravenshoe, when her pet dog Shelby stopped the potential attack by the venomous snake on Anzac Day. “She was determined to virtually barrel mum to the side. She saved mum’s life,” Ms Williams’ daughter Tanya Lee told AAP. “I work in a triple zero call centre and we get snake calls all of the time. If the snake had bit mum she might not have survived.” Ms Lee said Shelby, who is never far from Ms Williams’ feet, is now what her mum calls ‘her little lifesaver’. But after Shelby saved Ms Williams’ life the fight was on to save hers when they realised she had been bitten by the snake. “She was salivating and getting weaker,” Ms Lee said. Being a public holiday, the family had to drive 50km to the nearest vet. “Everything was just distressing,” she said. The vet bill came to $1400, a price Ms Lee says was worth it. “The vet told us she was very lucky to be alive,” she said.

ustralia is among the countries in which Google’s YouTube will launch a new music streaming service next week and soon unveil a premium service that will charge more for its original shows. YouTube Music, which will be launched on May 22, comes with extra features like personalised playlists based on individual’s YouTube history and other usage patterns, YouTube, owned by Alphabet Inc’s Google, said. It will compete directly with services from Spotify Technology SA, Pandora Media Inc, Apple Inc and Amazon.com Inc. The news sent stocks of music streaming companies Spotify and Pandora lower by about two per cent in the US on Thursday morning. The video streaming company said it will also launch YouTube Premium, the revamped YouTube Red subscription service. The new ad-supported version of YouTube Music will be available for free, while YouTube Music Premium, a paid membership without advertisements, will be available at $US9.99 a month, YouTube

said in a blog post. YouTube plans to charge $US2 more for its premium service, as it includes YouTube Music service along with its original shows. YouTube Premium will be charged at $US11.99 for all new members, the company said. “Google has an advantage given YouTube’s more than a billion users and viewers. So, it has opportunities to convert some into YouTube Music listeners or premium subscribers,” said Ali Mogharabi, analyst at Morningstar Research. The growing adoption of paid music streaming has helped wean a generation of music listeners away from free or pirated music, and has led to services such as Spotify and Apple Music becoming the recording industry’s single biggest revenue source. Revenue from music streaming services overtook sales of CDs and digital downloads for the first

time in 2017, according to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry. As well as the US and Australia, YouTube Music will launch in New Zealand, Mexico and South Korea on May 22. It will roll out to more countries in the following weeks. Separately on Thursday, YouTube also said it would revamp YouTube Red, the paid version of YouTube that comes with original programming, to include YouTube Music at an additional price of $2.

VETERAN SHERPA GUIDE SETS EVEREST RECORD

A

veteran Sherpa guide has scaled Mount Everest for the 22nd time, setting the record for most climbs of the world’s highest mountain, officials say. Kami Rita reached the summit on Wednesday morning with a team of foreign climbers and a fellow Sherpa guide and was already safely descending to a lower camp by the afternoon, said Gyanendra Shrestha, a government official who is stationed at the base camp. The 48-year-old was among the three men - all Nepalese Sherpa guides - who had tied the previous record of 21 successful ascents of the 8850-metre peak. Before leaving for the mountain last month, he told The Associated Press he wanted to scale Everest at least 25 times. Mountaineering has been his family tradition. His father was among the first professional guides after Nepal opened to foreign trekkers and mountaineers in 1950. His brother has scaled Everest 17 times. Most of his male relatives

have reached the top at least once. Kami Rita first scaled Everest at age 24, and has made the trip almost every year since then. He has also climbed many of the region’s other high peaks, including K-2, Cho-Oyu, Manaslu and Lhotse. In the autumn, he guides clients to smaller peaks in Nepal. The other two summit recordholders are also Sherpas. Apa, a 58-year-old guide who

uses only one name, retired in 2011 and moved to Utah. Phurba Tashi, 47, retired from highaltitude climbing in 2013 but still works at Everest’s Base Camp, helping organise expeditions. The route to the Everest summit was opened up by a team of Sherpas earlier this week. More than 340 foreign climbers along with local guides are attempting to climb Everest this month.

US ROBOT MAKER TO UNLEASH

DOG-LIKE MACHINE A

robotics company known for its widely shared videos of nimble, legged robots opening doors or walking through rough terrain is preparing to sell some after more than a quarter-century of research. Boston Dynamics chief executive Marc Raibert says his company plans to begin selling the dog-like SpotMini robot next year, likely to businesses for use as a camera-equipped security

guard. But he thinks other applications for the four-legged contraption will be likely developed by other companies because the robot has a flat platform to allow other equipment with its own programming to be easily mounted on top of it. Boston Dynamics already has made 10 SpotMinis with plans to manufacture about 100 more for additional testing before going into mass production by the

VISION APP ACTS AS EYES FOR BLIND AUSSIES

E

veryday life could be about to become a whole lot easier for blind and vision-impaired Australians, with a smartphone app acting as their virtual eyes. US-based start-up Aira, partnering with Vision Australia, on Friday launched its hands-free, wearable technology in Australia and New Zealand, the first countries to trial it outside the US. Using smart glasses or a smartphone, vision-impaired “explorers” beam a live stream to an operator who in effect becomes their eyes, talking them

through their environment step by step. To mark the app’s release, 15 blind and low-vision Australians put the technology through its paces at Vision Australia’s Melbourne headquarters. “It is access to information, any time, anywhere,” Aira’s Kevin Phelan said in a statement. “Aira promotes greater independence and access for people who are blind or have low vision because you get immediate assistance for almost anything you want to do without a sighted person nearby.”

middle of next year, Raibert said on Friday. No price has been set for the robot yet, though Raibert said making the latest prototype cost about one-tenth the price of earlier versions. Raibert unveiled the SpotMini plans at the University of California, Berkeley, during a TechCrunch conference focused on the rise of robotics and its potential to perform tasks and jobs now handled by humans.

Founded in 1992, Boston Dynamics rarely reveals its plans except by posting YouTube videos that have impressed and terrified people. Most of Boston Dynamics’ robotics research had been applied in the military until Google bought the Waltham, Massachusetts, company in 2013. Japanese tech giant SoftBank bought Boston Dynamics from Google last year.

CALIFORNIA MANDATES SOLAR FOR NEW HOMES

B

uilders in California will be required to fit solar panels on most new homes from 2020 under new building standards, a move that is the first in the United States. The decision, adopted unanimously by the fivemember California Energy Commission, is part of the state’s effort to fight global climate change. It came despite estimates it would raise the up-front cost of a new home by nearly $US10,000 in one of the most expensive parts of the country. The Commission estimated the standards will add about $US40 to monthly mortgage payments but will compensate for that by saving residents $US80 a month on energy bills. The new building codes include updates to building ventilation and lighting standards. They are collectively expected to reduce the state’s greenhouse gas emissions by 700,000 metric tons over three years, a level equal to taking 115,000 cars off the road, according to state officials.

The vote was a major win for the solar installation industry, which already counts California as its biggest market. Demand for solar equipment in California could rise by 10 per cent to 15 per cent because of the new standards. California has one of the most ambitious renewable energy mandates in the US, with a goal of sourcing half of its electricity needs from renewable sources by 2030. At the end of 2017, it had reached about 30 per cent, according to the CEC. Because of such policies, the most populous US state has frequently been at odds with President Donald Trump’s aggressive rollback of policies to combat climate change.

How Samsung fell behind in the

TV market A

t the 2013 annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, flashy OLED televisions sporting credit card-thin screens were at the front and centre of Samsung Electronics’ new gadgets display. Later that year, the South Korean company splurged on marketing the televisions which then retailed at around $US10,000 for the 55-inch model - to the ultra wealthy. Among the promotions was a penthouse party for the residents of One Hyde Park in London, labelled the world’s most expensive residential block. But by 2015, it had stopped making OLED (organic lightemitting diode) TVs, saying the market was not ready to embrace the high costs of the technology - based on thin films of carbon-based modules that light up in response to electric current. Instead it decided to focus on developing liquid crystal display screens that are backlit and enhanced with so-called quantum dots, semiconductor nanocrystals that produce colours and can improve picture quality. These are known as QLED TVs. It appears to have been a costly misstep. OLED TVs have become a dominant technology in the premium market - a TV of at least 55 inches in size costing more than $US2,500 - as the cost of producing them has dropped dramatically. Samsung is now the only major TV manufacturer not to produce OLED screens. And while the TV business generates less than 3 per cent of Samsung’s profit, which largely comes from its semiconductor and mobile phones businesses, the loss of the leadership of the premium, higher-margin market is a hard blow. “It was based on an objective appraisal of technological and cost competitiveness,” Jongsuk Chu, head of sales and marketing for Samsung’s TV business, told Reuters in a statement, referring to its decision to discontinue making OLED TVs.

Photo: Kim Hyun-suk, head of Samsung’s TV business, right, and a model pose with a 55-inch Samsung OLED, organic light emitting diode, TV during a press conference in Seoul, South Korea, Thursday, May 10, 2012.

A look at online reviews of both OLED and QLED TVs in the past couple of years indicate that OLED TVs made by South Korea’s LG Electronics and Japan’s Sony gained fans because of the quality of the picture. That doesn’t mean the Samsung QLED TVs don’t have their supporters. Picture quality has also improved and prices have dropped but they don’t tend to be reviewers’ top picks. “OLED TV’s jump in premium TV market share is a direct result of its outstanding picture quality,” said Ross Young, CEO of research provider Display Supply Chain Consultants. “Samsung may have missteped in their 2017 product by emphasising design over picture performance.” Samsung last year only got an 18.5 per cent share of global sales for premium TVs, based on dollar revenue, down from 54.7 per cent in 2015, according to research firm IHS Markit. Sony and LG have leapfrogged Samsung to grab 36.9 per cent and 33 per cent of the market respectively. Samsung remains the biggest maker of TVs in the world - a title it has now held for 12 years. It also claims to be No.1 in premium TVs, with more than a 40 per cent market share, based on data from GfK. These figures include 55-inch TVs that are cheaper than $US2,500. Samsung Electronics’ decision to base its TV business on LCD technology was made after it took the advice of Samsung Group’s now-defunct Corporate Strategy Office, a source with

knowledge of the matter said. “The office made a suggestion that it would be more profitable to focus on LCDs than switching to less-proven OLED,” said the source, who declined to be named due to the sensitivity of the matter. The reasons: the TV business was battling falling profits and the company felt LCD technology could be more profitable than high cost OLED, the source said. The only problem was that around the time this decision was being taken, LG was developing a much more efficient manufacturing process to make OLED screens. The retail price of a mainstream LG 55-inch OLED TV has dropped to just $US2,811 this year from $US14,056 in 2013, LG said. The impact on corporate results became clearer last month. LG said its TV division recorded a 77 per cent jump in quarterly profit and a record profit margin of 14 per cent in the quarter ended in March. Samsung reported a 32 per cent quarterly profit decline for its consumer electronics division that sells TVs and home appliances, saying that earnings fell from a year ago, partly because it had changed its lineup and stopped selling some lower and mid-priced TVs. Sony, whose television business incurred losses totalling 800 billion yen ($US7.4 billion) over ten years, swung back to a profit in the year ended in March 2017. To return to profit, the Japanese company reduced the number of markets around

the world in which it sells, diversified suppliers and offered both OLED and LCD screens. It also ditched an LCD joint venture with Samsung. The strategy paid off. While Sony had just 10.2 per cent share in the global TV market last year in dollar terms, it was No. 1 in the premium market. Its operating profit margin reached 10.7 per cent in the September-December quarter, according to John Soh, analyst at Shinhan Investment. The outlook for Samsung in premium TVs could worsen as 71 per cent of sales this year are expected to be OLED TVs, up from 51 per cent last year, according to IHS. And this is all happening with the 2018 FIFA World Cup starting in June. Consistently the most watched TV event in the world, it provides TV makers with a great opportunity to boost sales. When asked about whether it plans to restart OLED TV production and sales, Samsung said that it will lead the premium market by focusing on QLED and micro-LED technology, which uses miniature light emitting diodes to improve picture quality. “There’s no change (in our strategy),” Jonghee Han, President of Samsung’s TV business told reporters last month. Some display analysts say all might not be lost as Samsung can fight back on price. “Our goal is not to be No. 1 for x-number of consecutive years, but No. 1 forever,” Samsung’s Han said.

TEENS TARGET OF NEW VIC SCIENCE EXHIBITION

T

he secrets of the universe will be laid bare as a Victorian exhibition attempts to inspire Australia’s next generation of scientists, engineers, mathematicians and tech heads. As part of a $6 million redevelopment, Melbourne Scienceworks will on Saturday open its newest teenage and young adult-dedicated offering, Beyond Perception: Seeing the Unseen. The $3.75-million exhibit, made for and partly by teens over the past two years, visually showcases gravitational waves, invisible light, turbulence, sound and electromagnetism in six immersive and interactive sections. “I hope everyone will enjoy visiting it as much as we did creating it,” 15-yearold Tanya Kovacevic said. Victorian Creative Industries Minister Martin Foley reckons pouring funds into the permanent exhibition will pay dividends in science, technology, engineering and maths education.

SMARTPHONES BECOMING

HEALTH ISSUE

S

martphone addiction is affecting productivity, emotional wellbeing and relationships, a study of young Australians has found. The Deakin University study of almost 400 undergraduate students found a third felt anxious if they were unable to regularly check their phones. Forty per cent felt lost without it, 34 per cent lost sleep due to time spent on their devices and more than half were on their phones when they should be doing other things. Lead researcher Dr Sharon Horwood said the findings were surprising, and added weight to suggestions problematic smartphone use is becoming an increasingly prevalent public health issue. “There’s no doubt that smartphones have changed the way we do things, and given that around 88 per cent of Australian have smartphones, we must feel as though we get something good from using them,” she said.

Tesla with autopilot slams into truck

A

Tesla sedan with a semiautonomous autopilot feature has rear-ended a US fire department truck at nealy 100km/h apparently without braking before impact, but police say it’s unknown if the autopilot feature was engaged. The cause of the recent crash, involving a Tesla Model S and a fire department mechanic truck stopped at a red light, was under investigation, said police in South Jordan, a suburb of Salt Lake City. The crash, in which the Tesla driver was injured, comes as federal safety agencies investigate the performance of Tesla’s semi-

autonomous driving system. The Tesla’s air bags were activated in the crash, South Jordan police Sergeant Samuel Winkler said. The Tesla’s driver suffered a broken right ankle, and the driver of the Unified Fire Authority mechanic truck didn’t require treatment, Winkler said. There was no indication the Tesla’s driver was under the influence of any substance, and information on what the driver may have told investigators about the circumstances of the crash likely wouldn’t be available before Monday, Winkler said by telephone.

There was light rain falling and roads were wet when the crash occurred, police said in a statement. “Witnesses indicated the Tesla Model S did not brake prior to impact,” the statement said. Tesla’s Autopilot system uses cameras, radar and computers to keep speed, change lanes and automatically stop vehicles. The company, which is based in Palo Alto, California, and has a huge battery factory in the Reno, Nevada, area, tells drivers the system requires them to keep their eyes on the road and their hands on the wheel so they can take control to avoid accidents.

Plan to make Australia

A

n Australian-built metal 3D printer with the potential to manufacturer aircraft wings, ship hulls, submarines and rocket fuselage is shaping as a global game changer. CSIRO-backed outfit Titomic is set to officially put the world’s largest metal 3D printer to test for the first time in front of a crowd at an unveiling ceremony in Melbourne on Wednesday. Ahead of pushing the start button on the mega-machine, the ASX’s sixth-best performing company in 2017 is spruiking the technology as the greatest innovation to hit large-scale metal manufacturing in centuries. “The reality is when you look at the metals industry nothing’s changed fundamentally in 5000 years,” Titomic boss Jeff Lang told AAP. “The Greeks invented the process of digging a resource out of the ground, melting it and folding it into a metal shape. “When we talk about the standard metal printers, they’re still based on that fundamental technology. Our process completely defies that.” Unlike other metal and plastic 3D printers, the CSIRO-patented, cold-spray process - known as Titomic kinetic fusion accelerates titanium and other particles within a gas-powered jet stream. Pre-programmed robots then shoot out the metallic mixture at a speed that fuses it onto scaffold material.

“It’s a bit like throwing a ball at a wall,” Mr Lang said. “I throw it that hard when that ball hits the wall it’ll form out of shape.” The project was born out of a 2007 study as the federal government searched for a way to capitalise on Australia’s rich titanium resources rather than simply export the metal. “Our idea is to sell this technology. To put it on the map and ... push titanium powder,” Mr Lang said. The 40m x 20m machine is able to produce a metal object nine metres long, three metres wide and 1.5 metres high. But it could be configured to even larger settings. “It’s what we believe is the first in the world at this scale and this capability,” Mr Lang said. “We know the build-speed of the part is 45kg per hour. Generally, the normal metal 3D printer is about 1kg in 24 hours.” The main feature of the technology is its versatility, capable of producing everything from finite medical implants, bicycle frames and luxury luggage to larger automotive, aerospace and defence parts. However, the ability to fuse different metals is another feather in the printer’s oversized cap. “It means designers and engineers can go back to the drawing board now and imagine parts that were impossible to produce in the past,” Mr Lang said.

ind, solar and batteries could solely fuel Australia’s electricity system within 12 years under a proposal to power all the nation’s homes and businesses with renewable energy. The ambitious plan was launched in Melbourne recently on behalf of six Australian environment organisations working to move the nation to clean energy. “Australia has some of the best wind and solar resources in the world and technical capacity to meet its electricity needs with 100 per cent clean energy by 2030, let’s get on with it,” lead report author Nicky Ison said. “The plan has the level of ambition required to rapidly slash pollution from Australia’s electricity sector, set the nation up as a clean energy export superpower and ensure all Australians can access affordable clean energy.” The plan aims to build largescale wind, solar and batteries through clean energy auctions, have a Senate inquiry into the clean energy supply chain to find renewable jobs and grow a renewable exports industry.

A centre would be established to support industry to use clean energy and lower energy bills, while laws would also be reintroduced to improve how large-energy using businesses identify clean energy opportunities. The proposal aims to create fifty hubs across the country to give information, support community projects and rollout clean energy programs for renters and low-income households as well. It also proposes an energy service company for low-income households to ensure their bills go down, through access to clean energy, with minimum energy standards set, and indigenous communities would help codesign a clean power program. The goals don’t end there, with hopes to cut all of Australia’s climate pollution - from driving a car, manufacturing, to taking a flight - by 2050. Environmentalist and report co-author Bill McKibben says the federal government’s proposed National Energy Guarantee and “woefully inadequate pollution reduction targets” locked in polluting coal for decades.

HATE SPEECH, VIOLENCE FLOODS FACEBOOK

F

acebook is struggling to block hate speech posts, conceding its detection technology “still doesn’t work that well” and it needs to be checked by human moderators. The world’s largest social network published enforcement numbers for the first time on Wednesday, revealing millions of standards violations in the six months to March. The inappropriate content includes vilification, graphic violence, adult nudity and sexual activity, terrorist

propaganda, spam and fake accounts. Facebook took down or applied warning labels to 3.4 million pieces of violent content in the three months to March - a 183 per cent increase from the final quarter of 2017. Almost 86 per cent was found by the firm’s technology before it was reported by users. Facebook removed 2.5 million pieces of hate speech in the three months to March, a rise of more than half from the three months prior.

One fan said they could not wait to see Pink at 80 and hoped her shows would still include the sort of high-flying stunts she does now. “You know I will!” said Pink. “I’ll call it ‘the wrinkles and rolls tour’.” The singer’s comments also caught the eye of actress Reese Witherspoon. She tweeted: “Agree @pink! “We are supposed to grow old and our faces and our bodies that carry us through this life. “Gotta have Gratitude for every minute on this Earth.”

XAVIER RUDD FOLLOWS HIS OWN STORM T

here’s something effortless about Xavier Rudd’s music. It’s been six years since he released a solo studio album, because he waits patiently for those songs. A few years ago, while taking part in a ritual in the Amazon rainforest, a song just came to him. “It sort of happens to me all the time. Songs just turn up when they’re ready. I’ve never been someone who’s sat down and tried to write a song, they just seem to come along when they’re meant to,” Rudd told AAP. Storm Boy is his ninth studio album - a perfect companion to his previous work, praising the environment and calling for people to work together. It opens with the anthemic Walk Away, encouraging people to let go of the things that are holding them back. Protecting the environment, something Rudd feels passionate about, is also a running theme throughout all his music. “I love the natural world. I grew up outside, I wasn’t an indoors

kid,” he said. “I love our earth and I have a real passion for it, so naturally I write a lot about that, it’s what fuels me.” But on this album he’s also praising humanity. He respects movements, such as #MeToo, where he can see people are bringing about change. “I believe in those movements. I believe in people standing tall and wanting to make change and making that effort. I respect that because sometimes people feel like they can’t but they can. People can do a lot,” he said. On the track Keep It Simple he urges people to walk together, hand in hand, because he believes in people power. “We can get so much done together and be open, even in the environmental world, if all the various little groups that are doing great things in the planet linked arms and worked together you can make huge changes.” His ideas and songs may be idealistic, but it comes from a strong belief in what people can

achieve, coming from his two decades spent touring the globe. “I’ve spent the last nearly 20 years travelling around playing music and I’ve seen a lot and done a lot, and I guess I reflected,” he says. “Music is my journal so I don’t have any preconceived ideas of what I want it to be. I just let it be what it is and it comes out the way it comes out.” *Xavier Rudd’s album Storm Boy is out on May 25 and he will tour the country in August.

NEW MADONNA SINGLE SET TO BE RELEASED M adonna has announced her first single for three years will be released soon and will be called Beautiful Game. The singer has also released what appears to be accompanying artwork for the song via her social media platforms. The picture features Madonna wearing a crown of thorns under the words Beautiful Game. In a caption alongside the photo the singer wrote: “That I never Learned ... Coming Soon! #music #magic #mirwais” In the message Madonna appears to be alluding to the lyrics of the song, which she performed live at the Met Gala. During her performance on May 8 she sang: “It’s a beautiful plan, but I’m not concerned, it’s a beautiful game, that I never learned, you have taught me to shut my mouth, that I not get burned, keep your beautiful lies, ‘cause I’m not concerned.” Madonna also performed her 1989 number one single Like A Prayer during her appearance on stage at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

On the night she again wore a crown of thorns and was flanked by a choir dressed in monk’s robes. Announcing her new music Madonna, 59, also mentioned the producer Mirwais (full name Mirwais Ahmadzai) who she has been collaborating with on her new record. Mirwais previously worked on her albums Music and American Life. Madonna has been working on what will be her 14th studio album for some time and has been posting regular studio updates on social media. Madonna’s last album was 2015’s Rebel Heart which peaked at number two in the US and on the Official Albums Chart in the UK. Her last UK number one was 4 Minutes featuring Justin Timberlake and Timbaland back in 2007. In total Madonna has had 12 number one albums, 13 number one singles, and more number two hits than any other artist in the UK. The singer will turn 60 on August 16.

COURTNEY BARNETT

SHARPENS HER DIRECTION M

ost women know the strange fear that can overtake when walking through a park alone at night time. Courtney Barnett articulates it on her song Nameless, Faceless, just one of the 10 punchy new tracks on her second album, Tell Me How You Really Feel. “I want to walk through the park in the dark/Men are scared that women will laugh at them/I want to walk through the park in the dark / Women are scared that men will kill them/I hold my keys between my fingers,” Barnett sings. There’s no denying the timing of the sentiment. In an age of #MeToo, Barnett has been a

vocal supporter of movements against misogyny and signed an open letter alongside hundreds of others against sexism in the Australian music industry under #MeNoMore. “There’s never a solid time. It’s always a good time to talk about it but I guess it definitely came up,” Barnett told AAP about the timing of Nameless, Faceless. “I probably wrote that song a year or so ago, but it’s been years of thought.” While her first album examined the Melbourne singer-songwriter’s internal mind, Tell Me How You Really Feel shows moments like this where Barnett reflects outward. The album moves from

feelings of pessimism to hope, but what does she feel pessimistic about? “Just the world in general,” she said. “Same as what everyone else would probably be feeling, just because it can be a horrible place. “ But everyone doesn’t have Barnett’s ability to articulate those feelings in witty prose that’s become even sharper on this record than her first awardwinning album, Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit. “Words are so powerful and that’s why I’ve alway been so careful with them and spent so much time writing them,” she

said. She teams this economy of language with driving riffs as her music edges further towards garage-rock. It’s a powerful and potent combination and makes Barnett’s observations feel even more vital. But to her it’s just a way of understanding the everchanging world. “That’s what I feel like my writing always is, nothing too extreme. It’s just taking the world around me and trying to make sense of it in whatever way,” she said. *Tell Me How You Really Feel is out now. Courtney Barnett will tour Australia and New Zealand in August.

Eggs ‘not linked to cardiovascular risk’

P

eople should not hold off from eating eggs in fear of developing heart disease, says a nutrition expert. A randomised control trial, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition recently, found eating up to 12 eggs a week does not increase cardiovascular risk factors, even for people with type 2 diabetes. In the past there has been debate about egg consumption over concern eggs raise blood cholesterol levels. In Australia the National Heart Foundation recommends a maximum of six eggs per week for people with type 2 diabetes, who are at greater risk of cardiovascular disease. But Dr Nick Fuller from the University’s Boden Institute of Obesity, Nutrition, Exercise and Eating Disorders at the Charles Perkins Centre, says the recommendation is based on outdated science and should be changed.

“In the past it has been reported that people that were on high egg diets were more likely to develop heart disease, type 2 diabetes but a lot of those didn’t explain for different factors like what else was in the diet,” he said. Dr Fuller says it’s more likely the foods high in saturated fat that are often served with eggs, such as butter or bacon, that are harmful. “People can be having many more eggs than what we are currently being told in Australia,” he said. For the trial, participants at Sydney’s Royal Prince Alfred Hospital were put on either a high-egg (12 eggs per week) or low-egg (less than two eggs per week) diet for 12 months. After the first three months of the trial, participants were put on a weight loss program where they were educated on swapping foods high in saturated fats with good fats, for example swapping butter with olive oil or avocado. Researchers tracked a broad

range of cardiovascular risk factors including cholesterol, blood sugar and blood pressure. At the end of the trial, both groups of participants showed no adverse changes in cardiovascular risk markers, Dr Fuller said. “While eggs themselves are high in dietary cholesterol - and people with type 2 diabetes tend to have higher levels of the ‘bad’ low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol - this study supports existing research that shows

consumption of eggs has little effect on the levels of cholesterol in the blood of the people eating them,” he explained. The research, which was supported with a grant from Australian Eggs, also showed the different egg diets had no impact on weight loss. “Eggs are a nutritious food and having up to 12 eggs a week will not have an adverse effect on your cardiovascular risk profile or diabetes risk,” Dr Fuller said.

PUB TO FINE PUNTERS FOR

ROYAL WEDDING TALK

A

pub has banned any mention of the royal wedding - with a “swear” box installed for anyone who talks about the ceremony. The Alexandra Hotel in Derby reintroduced the idea after fines raised GBP400 ($A720) during Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding in 2011. Landlady Anna Dyson-Edge said regulars were “sick of hearing” about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding so she decided to put posters up around the pub of the couple with a red cross through it. The posters read: “Royal Wedding Free Zone! Please refrain from discussing the Royal Wedding. We’re not interested in it, let’s talk about beer or the weather instead - or something more interesting...” Any pub-goer who mentions the wedding will be required to pay money into the charity box - with all funds going to the Nightingale Cancer Unit at the Royal Derby Hospital.

Anna, who has been landlady of the pub for eight years, said: “We banned any mention of the event when William and Kate got married and we managed to raise GBP400. It isn’t the regulars who get caught out, it’s mainly people who pop in for the first time. “(The idea) came from the regulars for William and Kate’s wedding and this one is the same - the regulars came in and said they are sick of hearing about it. “So we have banned it and it’s a good way of raising money for charity.” Asked about where the money will go to, Anna said: “The money is going to the Nightingale cancer unit. My granddad passed away there in 2011 so it’s a charity close to my heart.” Despite the plan to ban any mention of the wedding, Anna stressed that she was not anti-royal - with the unusual initiative being “any opportunity to raise some money” for the charity.

Dark horse challenges Qld pumpkin kings

Q

ueensland’s pumpkin kings - the Frohloff family from Minden are back to defend their title. The Royal Queensland Show’s annual giant pumpkin competition will be decided on Saturday morning with father and son Geoff and Tony Frohloff again among the favourites to take the crown. Patriarch Geoff’s three-year reign as the state’s pumpkingrowing champion finally came to an end at the hands of son Tony last year. Tony produced a 257kg

whopper which took top prize at the Brisbane Showgrounds, but it didn’t eclipse his father’s all-time record set by his 2015 giant, which weighed 261.5kg. Showing the strength of the family’s pumpkin-producing genes, Tony’s son Riley last year won the youth award with his own 48.5kg entry. However organisers say there’s a dark horse on the scene with newcomer Steven Fritz, from Marburg, expected to give the Frohloffs a run for their money.

Morrison toasts end to craft beer tax

A

bizarre beer tax that slugs craft brewers 40 per cent more for using smaller kegs will be axed in the federal budget Currently, draught beer sold in kegs exceeding 48 litres is taxed at lower rates compared with beer sold in smaller kegs. “We are changing the rules to ensure that small breweries like this and distilleries around the country can actually compete on the same level playing field as the big guys,” Treasurer Scott Morrison told reporters at Capital Brewing Co in Canberra. The federal budget will extend concessional draught beer excises to smaller kegs, and increase the amount beverage companies can claim back at a cost of $85 million over four years. Alcohol manufacturers can currently claim a refund of 60 per cent in the excise duty paid on beer and spirits of up to $30,000 a year. This will increase to $100,000 from July 1 next year, and apply to all brewers

and distillers for the first time. While Mr Morrison had earlier raised the “tantalising” prospect of cheaper craft beer, two brewers flanking him at a press conference didn’t back price cuts. Andy Orrell, who owns Sydney-based craft brewery Hairyman, said he was unlikely to sell cheaper beer. “We will be investing in infrastructure and also jobs,” Mr Orrell said. Mushrooms: Gentle on the Planet, Healthy on the Plate

W

ant to start making more earth-friendly food choices in the kitchen? Start with mushrooms, a healthy food that requires minimal natural resources to produce. According to a 2017 study titled “The Mushroom Sustainability Story,” mushroom production requires relatively low water, energy and land space. Growing one pound of mushrooms involves using only 1.8 gallons of water and 1.0 kilowatt hours of energy and generates only 0.7 pounds of CO2equivalent emissions. And since mushrooms are grown on vertically stacked beds, it’s possible to grow up to 1 million pounds of mushrooms per acre annually. Mushrooms’ environmental footprint is just one reason to add them to your shopping list. They are

full of health benefits, including B vitamins, copper, potassium and riboflavin. They are also low in calories, fat-free, cholesterol-free, glutenfree and low in sodium. “There’s no doubt that mushrooms are having a moment they are popping up on food trends lists across the nation, and for good reason,” says celebrity chef Jehangir Mehta, owner of Graffiti Earth Restaurant and ‘New York City’s Most Sustainable Chef,’ according to Michelin. “The deliciousness of mushrooms coupled with its nutritious and gentle footprint on the environment attributes itself as a sustainable winner.” So, if you want a simple, easy and healthy way to be more earth-friendly in your kitchen, make mushrooms a part of your favorite dishes for Earth Month and every month.

Marinated Mushroom Bowl with Lentils and Wild Rice Ingredients: Mushrooms • 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil • 2 tablespoons unseasoned rice vinegar • 1 tablespoon low-sodium soy sauce • 2 teaspoon dark sesame oil • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds • 8 ounces crimini mushrooms, thinly sliced Bowls • 2 cups thinly sliced purple cabbage • 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice • Pinch of salt • 2 teaspoons low-sodium soy sauce • 2 cups cooked French lentils • 1 cup cooked wild rice • Garnishes: chopped cilantro, sliced green onions, black sesame seed, lime wedges

Instructions: 1. To marinate the mushrooms, whisk together the olive oil, rice vinegar, soy sauce, sesame oil and chili oil in a shallow bowl. Stir in the green onion, cilantro and sesame seeds. Add the mushrooms and gently toss in the marinade. Cover & let rest for 30 min. 2. Place the cabbage in a bowl and toss with the lime juice and pinch of salt. Set aside. 3. Stir in 1 teaspoon of soy sauce each to the lentils and the wild rice. 4. To serve, arrange an equal amount of mushrooms, cabbage, lentils, wild rice and cucumbers in each bowl. Drizzle with any remaining marinade and garnish with cilantro, green onions and black sesame seeds. Serve with lime wedges. Enjoy room temperature or cold. Makes 4 servings.

ROSEBUD REWINDS

TO THE 80’S W

ith their retro hits, cherry lips and high kicks, Rewind 80’s take the stage at Rosebud Hotel on Queens Birthday Weekend performing tunes from one of music’s most iconic eras the sensational ‘eighties’! The multi-piece live band plays homage to the rock, pop and new romantic bands that had you screaming in front of a television set as you watched the likes of Molly Meldrum & Countdown as a kid. This is a show not to be missed with its high fashion 80s glamour, head flicks and synthesizer’s. These kids aren’t the new wigs on the block! They have been spinning around like a record and are renowned as Australia’s most wanted tribute performers. They’ve lived the 80s, spent their pocket money on vinyl

records, been to Brashs music stores, listened to 3XY and seen Wham live and they’ve lived to tell the tale! This is the true story about the best musicians that money can buy, who have spent hours practicing their craft because they just can’t get enough of the 80s. Catch Rewind 80’s on Saturday June 9 at Rosebud Hotel. Tickets are on sale now from the venue and Ticketebo. com.au. Doors open at 8pm for a 9pm show.

entertainment NYC-themed festival heading to Melbourne

M

elbourne is morphing into the city that never sleeps, with a city-wide festival celebrating the culture of New York. From June to August, Melbourne will take a bite out of the Big Apple through cultural events of art, music, food, comedy, dance and film. The MEL+NYC festival will coincide with the National Gallery of Victoria’s Winter Masterpieces exhibition MoMA at NGV: 130 Years of Modern and Contemporary Art. The exhibition will showcase over 200 pieces from modern artists including Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, Frida Kahlo, Jackson Pollock and Georgia O’Keefe. Premier Daniel Andrews said the featured art from the Museum of Modern Art will be “the biggest group

of works ever to leave New York” and the first time some had ever left the gallery. “This seriously is the cheapest ticket to New York anyone will ever get,” he said. The festival will explore Melbourne and New York’s acclaimed music scene, with secret laneway pop-up gigs, a New York themed RockWiz live TV event, a tribute to Leonard Bernstein by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, and plenty of jazz. New Yorkers such as actress Ilana Glazer, singer Regina Spektor and Pulitzer Prizewinning journalist Ronan Farrow will take part in the festivities. New York’s foodie culture will be celebrated in the city’s restaurants and bars, with guest chefs from acclaimed New York restaurant Momofuku also joining the event.

F

or 26 years, filmmaker Ray Argall has been sitting on some of the most compelling live concert and backstage footage of Midnight Oil, captured at a seminal moment in their career. In 1984, Argall followed the band during the tour to promote their album Red Sails In The Sunset. It also happened to be the year frontman Peter Garrett made his first steps into the political arena as a Senate candidate for the Nuclear Disarmament Party. “People think of the more current history of him (Garrett) in the band and they’d sort of forgotten that in actual fact he’d run for the Senate back in 1984,” Argall told AAP. The filmmaker had been working with the band since 1982, first on a concert film at the Capitol Theatre in Sydney, and then on music videos for Power and the Passion and Read About It. “It was a very busy vibrant time in the 80s with Australian music, and

in particular Australian music video. There were five different shows running on television in Australia at the time showing music video content including Countdown, which was prime time,” he said. The band granted Argall access in all areas to follow them over a dozen different performances. At the same time, Garrett was becoming increasingly vocal in Australia’s anti-nuclear movement, as genuine fear bubbled over the arms race between the US and the Soviet Union. “(Garrett) was impressive. He was very articulate, he knew his subject, he knew his topic and he wasn’t reading off a cue sheet and he wasn’t just doing those little sound bites,” he said. What Argall’s film also captures is the fervour of the Oils’ fans at the time; the sweaty audiences who hung on their every word and became politically and socially motivated by their music. “Just to be side of stage

respond to an audience, and particularly how they communicate with each other as musicians, I think that was the key thing I was interested in capturing on camera,” he said. At the end of it all, the Oils weren’t happy with the sound quality of the live performances and didn’t want to release the footage, so Argall put it in a cool dark place.

decided to revisit the footage and created Midnight Oil 1984, which has come at a time where nuclear power is once again a topic up for discussion. “A lot of young people who’ve seen it have really commented on that and it’s good, you know, because you’ve got a new generation of young people who can do exactly the same thing.”

My interests? Why thank you for asking! I enjoy the early bird dinner special, can’t miss the 6pm news, and like long games of solitaire and backgammon. I’m only three years old, but am an old soul at heart. I just know my pawfect match is out there. Someone who would be happy to potter around the house with me, maybe watching some tv, reading a book or doing a spot of crocheting. I’m more of a people cat, and would really love a home without other pets or small kids. If you’ve been thinking about getting a furry friend, I’m just the girl for you. RSPCA NO. 875155

MY19 FORD RANGER:

Australia’s favourite 4x4 of 2017 brings up to 500Nm, 10-speed auto, and advanced new features for greater capability

T

he MY19 Ford Ranger brings Australians an even more capable pick-up with a freshened line-up that combines classleading technology, safety and convenience features. The MY19 Ranger builds on the capabilities and offroad credentials that have seen the Ranger become the most popular 4x4 pick-up in Australia in 20173. “The pick-up segment is at alltime record levels in Australia,” said Ford Australia President and CEO, Graeme Whickman. “The Australian market has shifted in a relatively short timeframe, pushing pick-ups like Ranger towards the top of the sales charts. It’s also seen new buyers come in to the segment, especially at the premium end, which is why we’ve made Ranger more refined and more capable at an even wider variety of uses.” Advanced powertrains for proven performance, cutting edge

technology The MY19 Ford Ranger offers a choice of three powertrains to deliver greater versatility to match Australians’ demands for a wider variety of applications. Having chalked up the equivalent of 5.5 million kilometres of testing, Ford’s new generation of diesel engines use advanced materials and sophisticated construction to offer Ranger BiTurbo customers a vehicle with an enhanced span of already capable attributes. With common-rail direct fuel-injection, an integrated intake manifold, and a belt-in-oil primary drive, the Bi-Turbo is compact, lightweight, powerful and efficient. “The new BiTurbo delivers 500Nm from 1750rpm, giving customers access to more torque, more of the time,” said John Willems, Chief Program Engineer, Ranger. The Bi-Turbo takes advantage of a sequential turbocharging to deliver greater responsiveness, drivability and maximum

efficiency. A pair of turbochargers are employed for maximum performance and efficiency. The fixed-geometry turbocharger is employed to deliver greater throttle response and eliminate lag by spooling up quickly at low speeds. The secondary turbocharger features advanced variable geometry to deliver performance gains and smoothness at higher speeds, taking over from the primary initial turbo. Available exclusively on XLT and Wildtrak, the new-generation Bi-Turbo diesel is coupled to an advanced 10-speed torqueconvertor automatic to bring greater torque, improved flexibility and a quieter, more comfortable drive to the MY19 Ranger. With 500Nm from a low 1750rpm, the Bi-Turbo delivers a greater torque spread, with the 10-speed’s close ratios reducing gaps in power and acceleration to make steep, slippery hill-climbs, for instance, much easier. XLT and Wildtrak models optioned

with the 500Nm BiTurbo engine maintain Ranger’s equal classleading payload and 3500kg towing capability. The Ranger’s proven 3.2-litre turbodiesel also delivers the outstanding payload and towing capabilities Ranger is renowned for. Its highly competitive towing applies to both automatic and manual transmission models, with 3500kg capability on all 3.2-litre powered Rangers across all body styles. Offering 147kW/470Nm, the 3.2-litre comes with a six-speed torque converter automatic transmission. With Australian-led design and engineering, local Ranger testing and development saw extensive use of Ford’s start-of-the-art facilities at Geelong and You Yangs, in Victoria. This included vehicle dynamic development, as well as the Vehicle SemiAnechoic Chamber, Kinematics and Compliance Ring at the Advanced Centre for Automotive Research and Testing.

KYRGIOS fighting to be fit for French Open N

ick Kyrgios is locked in a fierce French Open fitness battle as Bernard Tomic and Thanasi Kokkinakis bid to qualify for the clay-court grand slam beginning on Sunday. Kyrgios will test his injured elbow this week playing doubles in Lyon with American Jack Sock. The 23-year-old was seeded 22nd on Sunday but is a doubtful starter for Roland Garros, having not played in six weeks. Kyrgios has been working around the clock to regain full health after returning home to Canberra last month for a cortisone shot to treat his longstanding issue. After practising in Rome last week, the two-time grand slam quarter-finalist opted to ease his way back in doubles in a worrying sign also ahead of Wimbledon beginning in six weeks. Kyrgios and Sock are scheduled to face Joao Sousa and Federico Delbonis in the first round in Lyon on Tuesday. Kokkinakis, who is also on the comeback from injury, and Tomic are among six Australians in the men’s qualifying event at Roland Garros. They need to win three matches this week to make the main draw. Tomic, who won four straight matches on clay for the first time in his career last week to reach the final of a Challenger event in the south of France, plays Darian King of Barbados in the first round of qualifying on Tuesday morning. Kokkinakis opens against Frenchman Jaimee Floyd Angele in his first competitive outing since injuring his knee in an oncourt fall at last month’s Madrid Masters. Akira Santallan, Marc Polmans, Alex Bolt and Jason Kubler have also entered the gruelling qualifying process as they attempt to join Kyrgios,

John Millman, Matt Ebden, Jordan Thompson and teenage wildcard Al de Minaur in the 128-man main draw. Isabelle Wallace, meanwhile, will make her grand slam debut at Roland Garros after winning Australia’s women’s wildcard playoff in Paris. The Spain-based 21-year-old rallied past Olivia Rogowska 6-1 5-7 6-3 in Sunday’s playoff final to join Ashleigh Barty, Daria Gavrilova, Samantha Stosur and Ajla Tomljanovic in the women’s main draw. Ranked 249th in the world, Wallace’s only previous grand slam attempt ended in a firstround qualifying loss at the Australian Open in January. While Wallace can prepare for the biggest match of her life, and biggest pay cheque of her career, Rogowska will now join fellow Australians Arina Rodionova, Lizette Cabrera and Priscilla Hon in the qualifying event getting underway on Monday. Barty, who has been seeded 17th, Gavrilova the 24th seed, and 2010 French Open runnerup and four-time semi-finalist Samantha Stosur will finalise their preparations in Strasbourg this week. Barty is top seed in Strasbourg, where Stosur defends her title after beating Gavrilova in last year’s final. Stosur and Gavrilova could clash in the second round this year if they win their respective openers on Monday night. Second-seeded Gavrilova faces American Jennifer Brady, Stosur meets Sofia Kenin, also of the US, and Barty plays Thai Luksika Kumkhum, a lucky loser from qualifying.

FFA denies Cahilltex selection conspiracy F

ootball Federation Australia chief executive David Gallop has rejected suggestions Tim Cahill’s selection in Australia’s trimmed World Cup squad had been influenced by commercial factors. The 38-year-old talisman was unveiled as the centre of a marketing campaign by the Socceroos’ primary sponsor Caltex, before the ink was even dry on Bert van Marwijk’s trimmed group of 26. The opportunistic timing of the

‘Cahilltex’ campaign, whereby a number of petrol stations have been renamed in honour of the country’s leading goalscorer to coincide with the Russia tournament, triggered questions about the fairness of Cahill’s call-up. While a long-time regular, his selection courted some controversy given his lack of game time since moving to Millwall - 63 minutes over 10 games - and the concurrent omission of in-form Hibernian

striker Jamie Maclaren. But van Marwijk had already made clear his intentions for Cahill and last week called him “a special case” given his proven ability to change a game. And Gallop moved quickly on Tuesday to hose down talk commercial incentives had played any part. “I say ‘have a look at Tim Cahill’s track record’,” Gallop said. “He’s a guy who has just produced for Australian football,

for the Socceroos, so many times. He did it against Syria. “So I don’t think anyone can mock the fact that he is in the 26.” If Cahill makes the cut for a fourth World Cup, his role is likely to be restricted to a pinch hitter off the bench, given his worldclass aerial ability in the box, as well as a leader off the field. He said he was proud to be selected and would “leave no stone unturned” during a training camp in Turkey to make the final squad of 23 on June 3.

ARGENTINA APOLOGISES OVER SEDUCTION MANUAL

T

he head of the Argentine Football Association has apologised for the publication of a World Cup manual that included advice on how to woo Russian women. The advice, which has been condemned as sexist, was part of a course entitled ‘Language and Russian Culture - Thinking of the World Cup’ and included the tips, “Be clean, Don’t be negative and Don’t treat women as objects”. “An internal investigation ... concluded that part of the material was printed in error. “It does not reflect the thinking of the Argentine Football Association (AFA), nor its president Claudio

Tapia, nor any of its directors,” the association said in a statement. Tapia visited Russia House, a cultural institute, in Buenos Aires on Wednesday to personally apologise for the gaffe. News reports said the information had been presented to players, AFA staff and media earlier this week at a special forum on how to prepare for the World Cup. More than 40,000 Argentines have bought tickets for matches in the tournament that kicks off in Moscow on June 14. Two-time winners of the World Cup, Argentina have been drawn to play Iceland, Nigeria and Croatia.

SOCCEROOS GET TO WORK AT PLUSH TURKEY CAMP << cont. from front page...

It’s exactly how the Dutchman wants it. While the selection will be brutal for three Socceroos, the conditions are not. The Australian squad are staying within the lavish Gloria complex, which sprawls out along the coast and includes golf courses, beach access and three different resorts. And, of course, dedicated gym facilities and two pristine football pitches. The pitches have been decked out wall-to-wall with Australia’s sponsors and signs featuring team slogans like ‘never take a backwards step’. Daniel Arzani, one of the first group to arrive into camp on the weekend, said he’d never seen anything like it. “The hotel we’re staying in is actually massive, it’s ridiculous,” he said.

“There’s a lot of golf buggies around just to get around.” The secure facility will play host to the Socceroos for the next 10 days, before they head to Vienna for a friendly with Czech Republic. The team will then return to Belek, just outside Antalya, for another five days of training - including the final squad selection - before a friendly in Budapest with Hungary en route to Russia. Socceroos yet to arrive include Tom Rogic, who helped Celtic to a Scottish Cup win on the weekend, and Milos Degenek, who scored for Postecoglou’s club side Yokohama F. Marinos in a 5-2 league win over V-Varen Nagasaki. Early arrivals include Tim Cahill, Jackson Irvine, James Troisi, Andrew Nabbout and Massimo Luongo.

HODGE’S IMPACT GOES BEYOND THE FIELD << cont. from back page... in an AFL first and lapped up the atmosphere while shaping for a set shot at goal in the final quarter despite clearly being beyond his range. His rebounding helped the Lions establish a small buffer before they ran rampant in the second half to emerge 20.9 (129) to 11.7 (73). As is the custom, the 33-year-old was one of the men in the middle of the circle as a first-time victor at the club when the song was sung. “He would’ve felt like a young man again, standing in the middle of the circle getting the Gatorade shower,” Fagan said. “We had a few blokes in there tonight.” Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson is used to facing players and coaches he once worked with and said, despite Hodge’s legacy, this was no different. “Na not really; it’s the modern game,” he said. “Everyone moves on and he’s a Brisbane Lion now and enjoying his time up here and making a contribution.”

Longmire looks to stop free-wheeling C Lions

oach John Longmire says he’ll find a way to cater for Brisbane’s tall forwards and swift attacks as the Sydney Swans push for the AFL’s top four. The Lions broke their 2018 drought with a bang on Sunday, scoring a 53-point upset win over Hawthorn. And Longmire isn’t taking this Saturday’s trip to the Gabba lightly. “You absolutely disregard the win-loss ratio when you’re looking at the Lions,” he said. “They’ve been in almost every game probably except one ... the result the Lions got against Hawthorn has been building for quite a while and probably doesn’t surprise anyone because they’ve been playing a really good, strong brand of footy. “They run really hard, they move the ball from one end of the ground to the other really quickly, and they’ve got some tall marking forwards in their front half that gives them confidence to move the ball quickly.”
