ehd meets... Becky Stevens, owner of Flowers By Becky, an independent florist offering gift bouquets, wedding flowers, funeral tributes, commercial contract flowers and so much more! What were you working as before you got into floristry? Before becoming a florist, I spent about 25 years working as a secretary and PA. However, I’ve always been very artistic and loved flowers - my mum has always been a very keen gardener - so I think I take after her. When I got engaged to my husband, I wanted a real DIY wedding and that included my flowers so I went to night school to learn flower arranging. That was 17 years years ago and out of my bridal party I was the only one who didn’t have their hair done as I was still making the flower girl baskets! When, how and why did you decide to set up Flowers By Becky? My eldest daughter, Izzie, has cerebral palsy and when it was time for her to start school we didn’t know how she’d cope so I gave up work to be at home for her. I also had Pippa, who was three at the time, so it meant I had more time with her too. Soon after Izzie started school it became clear she was going to excel and didn’t need me and I became very restless. I needed to work as I’d been working since the age of 16 and loved it but I knew I didn’t want to go back into an office - I wanted to do something creative and work from home so that I was there if needed by either of my girls. I soon realised that I really wanted to fully retrain as a florist. I started my business in April 2009 and while doing a bit of private work, I also worked for a florist shop in Farnham. This was amazing and gave me the confidence to go back to college and take my floristry City and Guilds. I did this at Merrist Wood where I had an amazing time and made some fabulous flowery friends. What are your favourite type of arrangements to create?

6 | ehd July 2018

I really like the natural style that is popular at the moment, but I am also rather partial to something more contemporary. I can be very diverse. I don’t really have a favourite part of my job, I just love that my clients trust me to make their vision come to life, whether it be a gift bouquet, wedding or funeral tribute. Each one is as important as the other. Favourite flowers? I love big, beautiful roses but I really love all flowers. There is just something so calming about putting all these different flowers and foliages together to make one statement. Any big developments this year so far? In January this year I was thrilled to get a call from The Elvetham Hotel to ask if I would be a preferred supplier for them. I adore working at The Elvetham Hotel, it is such a stunning building with so much interest and the most helpful and caring staff I have ever come across. I also have lots of local businesses that I have started working with this year: Gracewell Nursing Home, The Oatsheaf, Hart House and Hartley Wintney Cleaning Company to name a few. I also have a couple of private homes that I dress with vases of flowers which is really lovely. Further plans for 2018? For the rest of 2018, we have lots of weddings and of course prom season will be very soon upon us! I love making prom corsages - they are so pretty and delicate. Then once we finish the summer, we’ll be getting ready for Christmas. I’m hoping to offer Wreath Making Workshops this year - I did a couple last year at client’s homes and they were so much fun. Any floristry tips you can share with us? Choosing flowers for a wedding can be tricky - you need your florist to guide you as to what is in season.

Many flowers are available all year round such as roses, freesia, germini and hydrangea but if you want peonies in September there’s no chance and tulips in August are a no no. When I’m tasked with making prom corsages, I usually ask to see a picture of the dress because then I can recommend what will work with it. What’s the one thing you love about living in Fleet? Being a Farnham girl and having moved to Fleet when I met my husband, Andy, I just love the real community feel about Fleet. I love that I walk down the street and people say hello, good morning etc. It is a lovely, friendly town and I can’t imagine living anywhere else. What would you do to improve or change Fleet? Nothing, except maybe get a Wagamama’s! Is there anything you want to share with Fleet that perhaps we should know? Every now and then you might find a bouquet of flowers randomly left with a note saying “Take me and give to someone who could do with a smile!” It’s my new way of doing random acts of kindness. Your favourite place to eat / drink / go in Fleet? Oh my, now you’re asking! I love my food and wine! But if I’m honest, I do love a curry and WE is just awesome. What’s the best piece of advice you have ever been given? Follow your dream! I did and I couldn’t be happier! What is the most trouble you have ever been in? Too much to mention in this interview… But I’m still here! Interview by Emily Gregory of Baby Love Photography, www.baby-love-photography.com

LANDLORDS by Lorraine Hutley

Gardens

Gardens can be seen as a bonus for a property by some tenants and a burden to others. Even the smallest patch of green space will require upkeep. Landlords If you are looking at buying a one or two bedroom property to rent, a garden may not be on the list of tenants requirements. Properties more suitable for a small family would benefit from an easy to keep and secure garden. Many small gardens which may be surrounded by high fences or mature trees struggle to grow a successful lawn even for a keen gardener. Paving or artificial grass will make a garden easier to maintain and more usable for a tenant. A small secure shed for cycles, car cleaning and garden tools would be an advantage. Larger gardens may well need more work and maintenance. It is important to agree what is expected from the tenant and what the Landlord will organise themselves. Generally, large trees and shrubs are left to the Landlord to maintain and this cost will need to be factored into the return on the rental income. Water features, steps and walls may be popular in a home but also offer a potential of risk to the tenant and liability to the landlord. Loose paving, steps and walls should be made safe and a clear written notice regarding the risk of ponds or streams should be given to and accepted by the tenant from the outset. Tenants When renting a property that has a garden, however small, you will need to keep it maintained. Gardening, like cleaning, requires a level of skill and it is worth asking for advice before you start. Grass will need to be cut regularly and leaving grass to grow will make it difficult to cut. Weeds in paving and driveways need to be treated with a spray on treatment like Roundup or Pathclear which is easy to apply and takes a couple of weeks to take full effect. Unfortunately the council no longer collects garden waste for free and so it will need to be disposed either by paying the council to collect it or by taking it to your local waste site. Don’t get caught out at the end of a tenancy by forgetting to tidy the garden. Gardening is a popular British hobby and a tidy garden makes your home look so much better, rented or not. 5 tips for running your first 5k Summer is (hopefully!) on it’s way, meaning that heading to a hot and stuffy gym

might not always be top of the agenda. But with lighter evenings and drier weather on the horizon, why not take your workout outdoors? Even if you’ve never run before, you could easily be up and running a 5k within 8 weeks, meaning you still get your workout in, all the while enjoying the great outdoors. Ready to take on a new challenge this summer? Here’s how to get ready to run your first 5k.

1. Wear the right shoes First things first, make sure you’re wearing the right shoes. Your shoes affect how you stand, stride and land, and running in a pair of badly fitted shoes can cause you a lot of damage – head to a running store where they will watch you run, ask you questions and find you the shoes that will best support you.

2. Take rest and recovery days If you’re following a training plan, be sure to stick to the rest and recovery days. These are critical to your recovery and can help prevent you from getting injured. Plus, if you were to run every day you’re at a much higher risk of

burning out mentally too. It’s also important that you listen to your body – if you’re feeling exhausted or especially achey then it’s okay to have an extra rest day; it will be more beneficial in the long run than pushing through the pain.

3. Warm up and cool down every time If your plan calls for a run, make sure that you start with a warm up of 5-10 minutes of walking or easy jogging. This will get the blood pumping to your muscles and it can also help to reduce muscle soreness and lessen your risk of injury when you come to do your training run. And once you’ve completed your run, try and end will a five-minute cooldown walk and some stretches.

4. Increase your speed and strength If you’re a beginner runner looking for increased body strength, it’s important that you include core workouts into your training routine. If your plan includes days where you should train on a cross trainer rather than run, you could incorporate some body-weight exercises into your workout such as push-ups, plank and ab exercises, back extensions and body-weight squats. Improving your core strength can have a beneficial

effect on your running, as they can help to improve posture and strength, ultimately reducing your risk of injury.

5. Follow a plan If you’re serious about setting yourself a running goal but don’t really know where to start, the best thing to do is to follow a structured plan. Whether you opt to follow a free online plan and tailor it to suit your schedule, join a running club, or sign up with an online coach who will create a custom plan, sticking to a planned- out routine will help you see your best results.

Last month was all about the corporate revolution that we’re seeing gain momentum in Western culture and I asked you, ‘What needs to happen for you to make a change?’ It’s not easy to make changes in our lives, especially when we have other people and obligations to consider. Decisions we make about our own lives have consequences and impact the others around us. But, what are the consequences of not make any changes and how does that impact those people? How often have you experienced in your life staying in a situation because it’s easier? Maybe a relationship, a job, a marriage, a home, a school, a town. And often it is easier to stay, in the short term anyway. Eventually though, all the reasons that sparked off the initial train of thought that something isn’t right and that you aren’t happy come back and you end up feeling like you’re going round in circles. It often leads to depression, anxiety, frustration, lethargy, low self-confidence, low self-esteem, a feeling of not being in control of your own life. What about the time that you did make a change though? It probably felt like the hardest decision you’d ever made, you had probably been pushed as far as you could go and were desperate enough to do something about it. Or something else happened, out of your control, that forced you to make a change. What were all the feelings

Revitalise Your Life By Jenny Thomas, Confidence & Career Coach at Revitalise Coaching

Welcome to this month’s column helping you to revitalise your life! and emotions you experienced in the beginning? Amongst many, there was probably fear, loneliness, sadness, upset, anger, disappointment, shock, failure and so on. I’m sure you felt pretty awful. What about the more empowering feelings that started to emerge though? We’re not so good at allowing ourselves to acknowledge those though are we? I have no doubt that there were also feelings of relief, optimism, hope, freedom, strength, positivity, enthusiasm, courage, energy, self-assurance, confidence, empowerment. Hopefully it didn’t take long, but after you’d been brave enough to do something about the situation you will have seen positive consequences and impacts on those around you too. You will have started to feel happier and back in control of your life again, lighter and more optimistic about the future. Maybe you felt like you could do anything! I know it’s not easy and I know how scary it can seem to make a change, but if we focus on the difficulty and the fear it paralyses us and we end up stuck until we’re desperate enough to do something

about it. But what if we focused on the other end of the scale? What if we told ourselves we would feel fantastic afterwards? We wouldn’t hesitate to take the first step would we?! So, what needs to happen for you to make a change? What are you waiting for? What would you tell you best friend to do in the same situation? Would you tell them that they deserve to be happy? If you feel like you’re at a crossroads in your life and don’t know where to start, I’ve created a FREE 5 minute video to help you get back on the right path for you. You can sign up for it here: https://www.revitalisecoaching. co.uk/courses It’s one of the tools I used to help me in the beginning, so I hope it’s helpful to you too. If you’d like to get in touch you can find me on FB, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and LinkedIn for daily support – I’d love to hear from you! Take care,

Jenny

Riordan Jewellers Ltd are based in the centre of Fleet, with a showroom in the Hart Shopping

Riordan Jewellers

Centre and a workshop and design studio just a short walk away on Fleet Road. We are a small independent business, established since 1991 by Stephen Riordan.

Here at Riordan Jewellers we are proud to be among the few jewellers on the highstreet nowadays who can boast their own onsite workshop. Here we carry out anything from simple repairs, to entirely handmade pieces of jewellery and silverware, and single items to multiple pieces for corporate clients. Our customers have the unique opportunity to book an appointment to speak with one of our skilled goldsmiths – quite often the same goldsmith who will design and make your bespoke piece of jewellery! No need to have a design in mind – as long as you know the type

of item you are looking for, our goldsmiths will do the rest! Asking a few questions, and browsing through our catalogues, we will help you choose the perfect piece to suit you and your budget.

and also we buy and sell good quality second hand jewellery and silverware. Take a look in our showroom window for our current selection of fully refurbished items which are being added to every week.

Many of our customers already have their own metal and stones, in the form of old unworn, broken or inherited jewellery. We can work with you to re-model this into a brand new piece that is maybe a bit more modern or better suited to your taste. This is a lovely way to keep hold of sentimental items that might have seen better days and are not safe or sturdy enough to be worn anymore.

As we are a small independent business, we oversee every part of every process ourselves, which means our service is personal and tailored exactly to our customer’s individual needs. We take the utmost pride and care over each job we undertake, and we feel the word of mouth growth of our business since 1991 is testament to this.

Our commissioned items vary in nature – from engagement and wedding rings, anniversary & milestone birthday presents and giftware, memorial jewellery and keepsakes, to presentation pieces and silverware for civilians and the military. No job is too big or too small! If you have old or broken items but are not looking to have anything new made with them, why not trade them in for cash instead? We buy precious metals for scrap which are then recycled,

We welcome you to come and visit, browse our showroom, and make an appointment with our goldsmiths to discuss your own requirements, and get a free quote for any work you may be thinking of having done. Steve and the team look forward to meeting you!

The Children and Young People’s Service at Spire Clare Park Hospital If your child is struggling with a health condition, you can choose to see a consultant privately at Spire Clare Park Hospital. Spire Clare Park offers a paediatric surgery service for children aged three and over and outpatient consultation appointments from birth for both privately insured and selffunding patients. The Crondall based hospital provides specialist advice, diagnosis and treatment led by experienced paediatric consultants and supported by specialist paediatric nurses to ensure the best service for your child. Our specialists treat children for a wide range of conditions including skin, ear, nose and throat, bones and joints, and hernias. Children are cared for in a secure designated area in a paediatric-friendly controlled environment separate from adults, limiting any safety risks and traumatic disturbances. Face to face pre-assessments allows the child or young person and family to see the area in which they will be cared for. This is often done with the support of a play therapist for the younger children, who will 24 | ehd July 2018

help explain procedures giving the family time to ask questions and really understand what will happen on the day. This often helps relieve anxiety as they are able to see their patient journey and we as professional can fully assess risk. This helps provide a smooth, calm and enjoyable journey for the family. The younger Children also get the chance to check out their ‘ride’ to theatre as we have a small electric white car which all the children seem to love, making an otherwise worrying and scary walk , fun and exciting. The new Children and Young People’s Ward has a small play area full of toys and colouring table to keep our younger children entertained. Parents can relax while their children are kept amused exploring what we have hidden in our toy boxes! We have a play specialist that helps provide holistic care by coming in to entertain, so that the child and parents/carers truly feel comfortable On leaving the child will receive a gift or activity pack, so that they can continue to remember

this otherwise anxious event with fond memories. For the teenagers we have two (parentally controlled) 8 inch tablets and the optional use of our fantastic ‘goose neck’ holders. This allows the tablet to attach to the bed or table with ease, freeing both hands for gaming and/or watching movies. Yvonne Virgin-Blyth, Children and Young People Lead, explains “We understand the importance to parents and children of being ‘listened to’ and the difference that delivering the appropriate clinical care to children in an environment which is tailored for children can make. Whether your child is coming into hospital for minor treatment or major surgery, we promise to offer them exceptional care”.

My approach is a holistic mix of therapeutic methods. Often, small concepts provide benefit even when presented independently and out of context. One concept is Reality versus Expectations. Life is full of disappointments which we grudgingly accept. But when we look closer at the workings of reality and expectations, we can reduce disappointment. The concept is quite simple, consisting of several clear facts. Putting these facts together in a usable, simple technique is the beauty of it. Despite being taught we can achieve whatever we wish (if we try hard enough), in reality we have almost no control over anything. We cannot control our environment or other people. Much of the time we cannot even control our thoughts and emotions (often leading to mental distress). Not only are we disappointed, we feel somehow that we have failed because we either didn’t manage to make it happen or contributed to it failing. Step 1 is acknowledging that there are things we cannot control. Those things are nearly everything. Sure, we can influence. But we cannot control. In reality, all we can control is our own response to something - be it an event or thought. Step 2 is to draw a set of old fashioned weighing scales. On one side is Reality and on the

28 | ehd July 2018

Reality vs Expectations other is Expectations. When Reality is more than Expectations, life has pleasant surprises, people do more than you thought they would and things go “our way” or well. Conversely, more Expectations than Reality mean disappointing results, things “go wrong”’ people don’t “follow through”, etc. Step 3 is the realisation that there are ONLY two ways to bring about change, either overall or in a particular situation. You can only improve Reality or reduce Expectations. Those are the only two options, I’m afraid, if you want change. Step 4 looks at both sides of the scale. What can you change in your reality? What actions can you take to influence the situation (remembering that you cannot control people or thoughts). You can try to influence or communicate better. Maybe you can take action by taking a course, being more pro-active or influence in some way. With the same objectivity, look at the Expectations. What do you expect? Are they realistic? If not, How can you lower them? People often don’t like to lower expectations. It feels like “losing”. It’s not. It’s being realistic -you don’t expect a good exam result if you don’t study. Really look at your expectations. Particularly

in relationship issues, we expect people to telepathically know what we want. Is that reasonable? Step 5 is to take action with what you have learned. What actions can you take in Reality to increase it to your expectations? How can you change your expectations to come closer to your reality? For example, realising that telepathy isn’t working, deciding an issue is worth verbal communication (action in Reality) or it’s not (action to reduce Expectation). What can we control vs what we can’t? This simple exercise often leads to other “crash courses” in Assertiveness, Problem Solving or Goal Setting. But often, it is enough to recognise how high our expectations in life have become, particularly with the bombardment of “you can do anything” media. We ARE capable of momentous things. It just sometimes takes time. Call now for a free initial consultation!

Rosie’s Good Reads Lancelot by Giles Kristian is Arthurian historical fantasy. The rich descriptive writing took me away to another time and place. I could almost hear the clash of metal during battles, smell the reek of prized severed heads and feel the hairs on the back of my neck rise from Merlin’s portentous words.

Lucky Star by Holly Curtis is a young adult coming of age story set in Portsmouth during the 1980s. Sixteen year old Ben Somerset is about to leave school. The author paints a realistic picture for those on the cusp of adulthood; there are dalliances with drugs, underage drinking, theft and bullying.

Shark Bait by Matt Walker is an action adventure thriller set in the UK. Licensed vigilante John Steele has just broken into the Carlucci drugs ring and taken out two of the leaders. But then he stumbles into a local loan shark’s business and suddenly everyone wants him dead.

Let Me Be Like Water by S.K. Perry is a contemporary novel set in Brighton that celebrates friendship found after a young woman reaches great depths of despair. A captivating story about the gritty side of life.

Beguiled By The Forbidden Knight by Elisabeth Hobbes is a simmering Mills & Boon romance set in Yorkshire, a few years after the Norman Conquest. King William has decreed that England shall be held and secured through marriages to create alliances. To this effect, Gilbert du Rospez has been sent to Haxby to meet his betrothed.

Life insurance with rewards

Meet Taking Cover in association with VitalityLife by Roy Allaway, Principal of Taking Cover Ltd Up until recently, Taking Cover Ltd was only available to armed forces personnel, and only offered life insurance and serious illness cover. It’s been an honour to protect these guys, and the great news is that we’ve just now launched Taking Cover for everyone. And non-forces also have income protection and private medical insurance available to them. Taking Cover is one of only 30 Exclusive Associates with Vitality in the UK. We protected a lot of people with Vitality via the original business Hart Securus Ltd, and this brokerage is still going with a Whole of Market insurance panel available to it. Roy gives talks and lectures to mortgage brokers and IFA’s about protection which may be why Vitality chose him for this single arrangement with them.

Vitality do things differently Their motto is “Make people healthier and enhance and protect their lives” It’s a simple concept; if you’re healthy and active then you’re less likely to get sick, meaning they’re less likely to pay out huge sums.

They reward you for being active It’s as simple as tracking how many steps you walk per day (you start earning points at 7,000 steps).

They help you understand your health and then motivate you to stay healthy - and it works. For £35 per month* and by tracking healthy activity, a 33-year-old could get: 1. 2. 3. 4.

£250,000 life insurance £100,000 serious illness cover Apple Watch 3 for £29 Free cinema ticket and Starbucks every week 5. Up to 40% off Garmin and Polar activity trackers 6. 50% off sports shoes at Sweat Shop and bikes from Evans 7. £125 cashback 8. Reduced monthly premium each year 9. 40% off monthly gym fees at Virgin, Nuffield and David Lloyd (50% with PMI) 10. Up to 40% off BA flights in Europe and 50% off Eurostar 11. 50% off health screens at BMI Healthcare, Bluecrest and Nuffield 12. 75% off a Champneys stay 13. Up to 25% off Ocado and 50% off Lloyds Pharmacy 14. And more! Further terms and conditions apply to all Vitality partners. Of course, there are some rules with these rewards e.g. you max out at £500 cashback on the bike, but this is something we can talk through with you. The great thing about Vitality is that if you engage with it, it just works – I personally made £1,450 worth of savings last year, helped that I also had some illness cover for my sons enabling them to get free cinema every week.

It’s a really simple process, and it’s something we can do with you at our offices in Fleet or over the phone. There’s no fee involved, and no obligation to purchase – we’ll just have a chat; offer advice then give you a quote. We’re FCA registered, and our number is 804150. We’d love to help anyone who wants to know more – even if you’ve already got insurance, we can check that you’ve got the right policy for you; we want to help you get the best protection for you and your family. If you don’t already know Roy, he’s a Fleet boy through and through and still hosts the 80s and 90s nights at The Harlington. You’ll also catch him every Tuesday night at 8pm on Radio Woking, where he interviews a mix of Fleet locals and industry leaders!

Plan A v Plan B It’s been said that when we start out in life we all have a ‘Plan A’. Plan A is our perfect life; all we would love to do and to be, and the success we would like to enjoy. The reality, however, is that Plan A rarely happens, and most of us end up living our Plan B. This might be okay, but it’s not our Plan A! When I was thirteen, my Plan A was to be a rock star. This dream began when I met Nigel in the Scouts. Nigel was three years older than me and played guitar. He wanted to form a band and was looking for a bass guitarist. I was just learning the guitar and fancied my chances. So I bought myself a bass guitar (from Woolworths, believe it or not!) and got learning. We soon started rehearsing together, others joined and the band got started. A year later, Nigel was driving, our band had an impressive set list of sixties and seventies covers and, thanks to an agent, we were getting gigs in pubs, restaurants and workingmen’s clubs up and down the south coast. My Plan A had a fighting chance of becoming reality! But sadly, it couldn’t last. With my A levels behind me, it was time to move on. So, I left home, went to work abroad, lost touch with the band and that was the end of Plan A. The years went by and the road of life took me down the road of faith. My Plan B as an ordained church minister has been far from disappointing (after all, any job where you only have to work Sundays can’t be bad!), but it wasn’t exactly the Plan A I had in mind when I was a teenager. But life is full of surprises and, five years ago, just before Rosie and I moved to Fleet, one of the band members found me online and got in touch. This led to

a reunion of the whole band and, just for fun, we got our guitars out once more. Something clicked and, before we knew it, we had reformed – this time as an Eagles tribute band. So here we are, forty years on and we’re back gigging again. We’re all older and wiser, and struggling to remember the song lyrics, but we’re having the time of our lives. We call ourselves ‘The Desperado Band’ and, if you want to hear us play, we’ll be doing a half-hour set at the Concert on the Green on the 14th July. I know we’re only a tribute band with none of the wealth and fame I had in mind all those years ago, but I smile when I think of the psalm in the bible that speaks of God who ‘satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s’ (Psalm 103:5). Maybe this is my Plan A after all! Rev Patrick Butler
