THE ONLY NEWS SOURCE THAT GIVES A HOOT ABOUT BIG LAKE AND REAGAN COUNTY

Hospital District Wants to Build New EMS/Fire Station for County The Reagan County Hospital district wants to build the county a new EMS and Fire Station. The idea was floated Monday during the Reagan County Commissioners’ Court meeting at the Courthouse. “I’m just here to let you know what we are thinking,” Hospital board member Heath Holt said. “We think this is a great way for us to help out the

community.” Holt told the commissioners that the hospital district wants to use Hickman Trust funds to pay for the new facility. Mike Elkins, representing the Hickman Trust at the meeting, said the trust is flush with cash right now. “They can only use that money on hospital projects,” Holt said. “We just moved into our new hospital facility, so

there isn’t a huge need for new construction right now.” Holt said the idea currently is to demolish the old hospital building and place a new EMS/Fire Station there on Main Street. “We are looking at renovating the old care center into apartments,” Holt said. “So we could provide sleeping quarters for the EMS and fire personnel. It would

give them more space than they have now, and would help the county with recruiting.” Holt said the district is looking to build the facility before turning around and leasing it to the county while retaining ownership of the land. “It is very similar to what the county SEE REAGAN HOSPITAL DISTRICT 5

LET HIM FEAST

Reagan County’s Tristan Ortiz is a force to be reckoned with. The junior lineman has racked up 34 pancake blocks during the Owls first four games of the season. He has his personal goals set high in 2017, and worked hard over the offseason to attain them. We talk to Coach Blake Weston, Tristan and the men who run behind him about what makes him a true blocking freak on Friday nights. J.L. MANKIN | BIG LAKE WILDCAT

Tristan Ortiz: An Appetite For Complete Domination J.L. MANKIN BIG LAKE WILDCAT It’s one of our favorite questions to ask an opposing coach each week... ‘Which Owl do you fear the most?’ The answer, more times than not, is the same. They may not know his name off the top of their head, but they sure know his number. “Number 74,” they say. Tristan Ortiz is a force up front for the Reagan County Owls on both sides of the ball.

The 5’11” 270 lbs. junior is mowing down opponents with 34 pancakes blocks in the Owls’ first four games of the season. A pancake, if you didn’t know, is when an offensive player, typically a lineman, makes a block so hard it leaves the defender flat on his back... like a pancake. “Our offensive line is the best group on this team,” Coach Blake Weston said. “They are the best group, and he is their leader.” Tristan made his impact felt Friday night in the Owls’ game against

Sheriff’s Office Looks to Replace Failing In-Car Video System Reagan County Chief Deputy Destin Wilha made a request Monday morning to replace his department’s failing in-car video system. Wilha told the commissioners that the money is already in the budget for next fiscal year, which starts October 1, but he needed to record the request with the court since it is a capital expenditure.

since my sophomore year, but I have a lot of room to grow.” Those improvements started last year during spring ball. “I came in early last year to get to know everyone,” Weston said. “I noticed Tristan was slimming down. I asked another coach if he was Okay.” Turns out Tristan was hitting the weight room hard turning any extra weight into muscle. “I knew right then he’d have a good SEE TRISTAN ORTIZ 3

The worst game for the Owls this year ended up being Tristan’s best with 13 pancakes in the team’s season opening loss to McCamey. “He is really special on both sides of the ball,” Weston said. “When he is right, he is the best lineman I know. He is smart and strong as all get out.” Tristan doesn’t think of himself as anything special though. “I think I’d give myself a B minus at this point in the season,” Tristan said. “I’ve made many improvements
