Hospital District Wants to Build New EMS/Fire Station for County The Reagan County Hospital district wants to build the county a new EMS and Fire Station.

The idea was floated Monday during the Reagan County Commissioners’ Court meeting at the Courthouse.

“I’m just here to let you know what we are thinking,” Hospital board member Heath Holt said. “We think this is a great way for us to help out the

community.”

Holt told the commissioners that the hospital district wants to use Hickman Trust funds to pay for the new facility.

Mike Elkins, representing the Hickman Trust at the meeting, said the trust is flush with cash right now.

“They can only use that money on hospital projects,” Holt said. “We just moved into our new hospital facility, so

there isn’t a huge need for new construction right now.”

Holt said the idea currently is to demolish the old hospital building and place a new EMS/Fire Station there on Main Street.

“We are looking at renovating the old care center into apartments,” Holt said.

“So we could provide sleeping quarters for the EMS and fire personnel. It would

give them more space than they have now, and would help the county with recruiting.”

Holt said the district is looking to build the facility before turning around and leasing it to the county while retaining ownership of the land.

The answer, more times than not, is the same.

They may not know his name off the top of their head, but they sure know his number.

“Number 74,” they say.

Tristan Ortiz is a force up front for the Reagan County Owls on both sides of the ball.

The 5’11” 270 lbs. junior is mowing down opponents with 34 pancakes blocks in the Owls’ first four games of the season.

A pancake, if you didn’t know, is when an offensive player, typically a lineman, makes a block so hard it leaves the defender flat on his back... like a pancake.

“Our offensive line is the best group on this team,” Coach Blake Weston said. “They are the best group, and he is their leader.”

Turns out Tristan was hitting the weight room hard turning any extra weight into muscle.

Gov. Extends Aid for Widespread Needs Caused by Hurricane Harvey AUSTIN — Gov. Greg Abbott on Sept.

20 extended his state disaster declaration for 60 counties affected by Hurricane Harvey.

“As Texans continue to recover from this storm, I want to make it absolutely clear that the State of Texas will be there every step of the way. This disaster declaration extension will help ensure affected communities continue to get the resources they need to rebuild and return to full operation. Although the road to recovery will be long, Texas is fully committed to doing everything we can to assist those in need along the way,” Abbott said.

State disaster declarations must be renewed every 30 days for assistance to remain available, and Abbott said he would continue to renew the declarations as needed.

On Sept. 20, Abbott and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton urged President Trump to ensure that churches and other religious organizations are treated equally with other nonprofits and not excluded from Federal Emergency Management Agency disaster funding for victims of the storm.

FEMA rules offer assistance to private non-profit organizations, including zoos, performing arts centers and

museums, but facilities established or primarily used for religious activities are excluded, Abbott and Paxton said.

The president, they added, has the authority to include churches and other houses of worship in FEMA’s definition of a “private nonprofit facility.”

TxDOT, through the website DriveTexas.org, provides a way for travelers to choose routes in, around or through hurricane-stricken areas of the state.

TxDOT said that with more than 500 state roadway closures during the height of Hurricane Harvey, the DriveTexas.org website was visited more than 5 million times as drivers searched

to check road conditions, find alternate routes and see closures on state roadways.

The other day I found myself in a quandary. I was in need of cupcakes, but the pantry was without a box of cake mix. I didn’t Slices of Life want to go to the store so was left with but one option: to bake from scratch.

I’m not a baker. Mostly because I lack a penchant

I didn’t think much of it.

Until a few days later when I related the experience to a few friends. They all had the same reaction: disbelief and shock. “I’d never bake from scratch,” they said. “Too risky.”

I got the same response from my family a week later when we ran out of pancake mix. They assumed being out of pancake mix meant we couldn’t make pancakes. Ha! There’s a Google solution for that.

I stirred together some flour, eggs and assorted baking sodas and powders and flipped out a batch of from scratch flapjacks. My family was impressed with my culinary magic. Who’d have ever thought you could make pancakes without a mix?

The kitchen – and food – can be mysterious and complex. Daunting even.

And we are busy. Let’s not forget that.

Convenience foods and mixes make our complex and hectic lives easier. I’m all about making life convenient and my freezer always contains some sort of premade waffles and pizza.

But in a pinch, I’ve found that going back to the basics isn’t really that hard and we shouldn’t forget that making things the old-fashioned way is doable. Many things in life seem mysterious and complex, until you understand them. Then they become simply a few ingredients waiting for you to mix together in a bowl.

You don’t have to stop with pancakes.

There are other typically pre-made food items you can create at home from scratch without scratching your head in frustration because they are really, truly easy to do.

Whipped cream made at home is so much better than the stuff in the plastic bowl or metal pressurized thingy. The ingredient list is short. Cream. Powdered sugar. And air, which you whip in with a hand or electric beater. It takes just a few minutes. Any longer and you’ll have butter. (Which you can also make at home.) If you want a magnificent versus a great outcome you can add a dash of vanilla (to the whipped cream, not the butter). Why buy the cool or ready stuff when you can have real?

If you’re feeling the love, you might want to try making yogurt. It’s made with milk and a small amount of yogurt containing active cultures. Temperature and time are key, so if you’re interested you’ll want to get the details through the Google.

Cheesecake is cream cheese (or the lower fat stuff), eggs and sugar. For every block of cheese (usually about four for an entire cheesecake), use one egg and a quarter cup sugar. You can add vanilla if you are feeling generous. After that, get inventive and add other flavors and ingredients – chocolate, berries, etc.

Use whatever you like for the crust. Graham crackers are popular, but almost any cookie will do.

That’s about all I have room for, but I could go on about mozzarella cheese, ice cream, corn dogs, chicken soup and so on.

Cooking from scratch: it’s like having a magic science lab – right in your own kitchen. And the best part is you get to eat the results.

The town of Marathon has had a marathon race since 2003.

“We run a full marathon, a half marathon, a 10k and a 5k,” says Marci Roberts, who is in charge of the race. “We bus all of our

Since Marci took over the race a couple of years ago, the number of participants has increased. Registration is underway now.

“The race takes place on October 21st this year. It’s on a Saturday. If you go to marathon2marathon.net you’ll get all the information you need and you can register right there.”

In the past, the race attracted runners mostly from major Texas cities.

“Then we started getting runners from out of state and now we’re getting them from out of the country. This is a Boston Marathon qualifier.”

Registration is 95, 75, 45 and 35 dollars respectively. Proceeds go to Marathon schools, churches, the library and fire department.

“This is not the typical race you find in a big city where your contribution isn’t really felt. Here it is hugely felt. The whole town comes out for it.

It’s the biggest event we have. It’s a very heartfelt, sweet race because we only have 430 people living in town.

We have a hundred volunteers for the race. We had 502 registrations last year.”

Participants get a t-shirt. Finishers get a medal on a ribbon and winners get special awards. The race is downhill and runners end up at a lower altitude.

“Marathon can’t hold all the participants. They stay in Alpine or Fort Stockton, some as far away as Fort Davis or Marfa.”

If you haven’t been to Marathon, you will find it an interesting place.

Several people from Austin and other places have found it a pleasant place to live. The cost of living is reasonable, the scenery is outstanding since it’s the gateway to the Big Bend National Park and the weather is near perfect.

If you need a good bottle of wine or some ice cream you can find them at Marci’s grocery store. It has all necessary supplies for spending a few days in the mountains. Most of the time you’ll find Marci at James Evans’s photography gallery. She is married to James. Marci plays piano and is a member of the Texas Commission On The Arts.

“Well I’m a registered architect and interior designer, so that’s what I have done my whole life and am very passionate about it. I worked at architectural firms in Connecticut, New York City and Austin, then had my own business in Austin. I kinda got burned out and ended up moving here.”

Reagan County’s Tristan Ortiz is strong. How strong? The junior represented Reagan County last year at the State Powerlifting Meet in Abilene. “In a lot of ways I don’t think powerlifting helps in football,” Coach Blake Weston said. “It is such a slow twitch competition unlike football, which is fast twitch.” Weston said there is one undeniable benefit to having a good powerlifter on your team. “The real plus is the hard work he puts in during the spring,” Weston said. “That is work other guys aren’t getting. Tristan does a great job of doing things right in the weight room. He’s a better football player this year for it, and will be an even better powerlifter when that time comes.”

Some of Coach Weston’s decisions may have more to do with Tristan’s success than he will acknowledge.

While Weston brought in a new offensive scheme for the Owls in his first year as a head coach, he also made the decision to keep much of the blocking up front the same as when the team was in the Wing T. “Everything else we do on the field is different,” Weston said. “But those guys up front are doing the same thing they did in year’s past. Not only are they doing the same things, they are doing them really well.”

One feature of the team’s blocking style is the consistent use of a pulling blocker.

“That is my favorite,” Tristan said. “When I get the play and realize I get to pull, I get very excited.”

One such play happened on the Owls’ second score Friday night in Forsan.

Weston called an off tackle counter play setting up Tristan with his favorite type of block.

“You get the whole defense flowing one

way with misdirection,” Tristan said. “Then I pull to the other side. I always get a pancake on that play when I get to my man.”

Tristan fully de-cleated Forsan’s best and biggest lineman on the play to help set up the Alex Chavez score.

“That is part of what makes him unique,” Weston said. “He is big and very strong. What sets him apart though is his feet. He has really good feet and knows how to move.”

Not only does he move well near the line of scrimmage, he also has an engine that won’t quit until the whistle blows.

On the Owls’ first touchdown of the night in Forsan, Tristan found himself 20 yards down the field laying a devastating block on a Buffaloes’ defensive back to help spring Samuel Goodloe free.

“When I see Samuel break a play open, I know he is giving it all he has,” Tristan said. “I want to do the same. I want to guarantee he gets into the endzone.”

Sometimes, it’s Tristan who finds himself in the endzone, though.

“We had him on the scout team in Week 2,” Weston said. “Irion

County liked to give the ball to one of their linemen, so we had Tristan in the backfield simulating that look.”

Weston found out what most Reagan County fans who watched Tristan play middle school ball already knew. Tristan can run the rock.

“I watched him a few times before it hit me,” Weston said. “I told another coach, ‘hey, Tristan looks really good with the ball.’ We set to work putting some plays in for him.”

The Owls have utilized those plays mainly in two-point situations with Tristan notching four points for the Owls so far.

“I love it,” Tristan said.

“Having the ball tucked in my arm isn’t something I get to experience often. Every time coach gives me that opportunity, I’m going to take advantage and make it count.”

Players who make their name behind the blocks of Tristan and the offensive line have nothing but praise for him and the group he belongs to.

“He is just so big,” Samuel Goodloe said. “When he is going full speed he is hard to stop. He makes an impact every play and that is appreciated.”

Sophomore Cahel Lafferty, who had a breakout game Week 2 for the Owls, said he feels it is Tristan’s versatility that makes him so special.

“It is really rare to find someone like him,” Lafferty said. “He’s strong enough to drive a man off the ball and take him to the ground, but he’s fast enough to get where he needs to be when he pulls.”

Lafferty said that versatility means the world to him.

“As a back, it doesn’t get much better than that,” Lafferty said. “He’s very smart and a leader too. He knows when its time to get serious.”

Lafferty, who is new to Reagan County this year coming from Cotulla, Texas, said one last bold thing about Owls’ number 74.

“When this season is over there will be no doubt he is the best lineman in the district,” Lafferty said. “I know he is the best lineman I’ve ever played with, and wouldn’t hesitate to say he’s the best in West Texas.”

That kind of praise lines up well with one of Tristan’s personal goals for the year.

“I want to be All-State as an offensive guard and defensive tackle,” Tristan said. “We work hard to win a district championship and win

the last game of the year.

I, myself, work to be All-State. Everyday at practice I give it my all to achieve that goal.”

It wasn’t easy to focus in on Tristan for this article.

From Coach Weston, to Goodloe and Lafferty, down to Tristan himself... all of them gave praise to the offensive line as a group first.

“I agree that the strength of our team comes from the line,” Tristan said. “Each one of us take great pride in what we do. What we do individually, and what we do as a group. We love comparing stats on Monday to see who had the most pancakes and drive blocks. We are competitive against each other, and that makes us work harder each practice.”

Tristan is joined on the offensive line by left tackle, Jose Rocha, left guard, Trey Ortiz, center, Angel Gallegos and right tackle Servando Carrasco.

“They are each so talented at what they do,” Weston said. “That right side with Tristan and Servando is so huge. They are big guys that can move the line of scrimmage.

The left side is quicker and often out plays opponents that out weigh them by quite a bit.”

As for those opposing coaches that respond to

our first question with a “number 74,” well, they have a lot to say about what sets Tristan apart.

“He is a load on the line,” Forsan Coach Jason Phillips said. “We haven’t faced a guy with his size or strength this season.

We have to take care of him.”

Coahoma Coach Fred Dietz echoed with similar observations of Tristan.

“Our main focus is that number 74,” Dietz said prior to the Owls’ win in Week 3. “You don’t see many big men like him that can move. He is a good football player.

A really good football player.”

Tristan will get another chance to dominate the trenches this Friday as the Owls travel to Ozona seeking a solid 4-1 start to the year.

This is a good chance to encourage all Owl fans to arrive in Ozona early to participate in the Ozona Knights of Columbus Pancake Supper before the game starting at 5 p.m.

Settle in with our neighbors to the south at their Civic Center across from the stadium and have a pancake feast.

Rest assured, your Owls’ offensive line, spearheaded by number 74, will be hosting a pancake feast of their own starting at kickoff.

Morris hauled in the pass for 39 yards setting up Goodloe for his next touchdown on the night.

Goodloe punched the ball in from two yards followed by a two-point conversion pass from Chavez to Kaleb Morris to tie the game up at 20 all.

Goodloe finished the game with 72 yards on 12 attempts and the two touchdowns.

Forsan pulled ahead four plays later on a 42 yard touchdown pass.

“Again, the guys just don’t quit,” Weston said.

“They respond well to adversity. We saw it again tonight.”

The Owls took the lead again with 33 seconds left in the third quarter.

It was a lead they didn’t let go of again on the night.

“Nathan DeLeon is an unsung hero for us,” Weston said. “He is always solid on defense.

He is limping around, playing hurt.”

DeLeon’s hurt ankle didn’t slow him down on his 41 yard touchdown run on a draw play.

DeLeon’s touchdown was followed by a strike from Alex Chavez to Morris for a two-point conversion.

“We keep running the same thing on the twopoint conversion,” Morris said. “Nobody can stop it yet. Why fix it if it ain’t broke?”

The Owls recovered the ensuing kickoff after a Forsan player muffed the ball.

Alex Chavez capped off the Owls next drive with a 13 yard touchdown run followed by a two point conversion to take the 36-27 lead with 9:52 remaining in the game.

“Everything we accomplish on offense starts up front,” Morris said. “Our linemen are amazing.

They went up against some good players for Forsan, and took care of business. That group of guys deserve all the praise.”

Forsan took their final gasp on a touchdown pass

with 6:09 remaining in the game.

The Owls left little doubt who the better team was in the end when Kaleb Morris hauled in a seven yard pass for his first touchdown of the night.

“He is such a great quarterback,” Morris said. “He delivers the ball where it needs to be. He keeps defenses honest with his legs. He is really, really good.”

Chavez notched 241 of his yards through the air with the other 100 coming on the ground. he finished the game with 14 points to his name.

The bulk of those passing yards went to his cousin, Justin Chavez, who finished the night with 112 yards on five receptions.

Morris ended the game with 59 yards on three catches, the touchdown and a pair of two-point conversions.

With seconds ticking off the clock, Forsan tried to rally their troops.

The Buffaloes fell short though with a familiar Reagan County athlete, Alex Chavez, coming up with the game winning interception on the last play of the game.

“Again, glad we won,” Weston said. “If anyone

has any ideas on how to get our guys to come out hot early, please let me know. If we could ever do that it would be scary.”

Morris said the slow starts will be fixed.

“We will take care of it this week in practice,” Morris said. “You will see a more focused team next week.”

The Owls travel to Ozona this Friday to take on the Lions.

“They are going to be tough,” Morris said.

“Ozona is always tough, but we will be fine. We just have to stick to our game plan. Run the ball like we know how to do.

We’ve shown we can pass as well. Our team as a whole is dual threat. We just need to come out and show it in the first half.”

Owl fans are encouraged to make the trip to Ozona Friday to cheer on the Owls as they look to move to 4-1 on the season.

“I hope our fans will see a team that starts hot this week,” Weston said.

“Getting two come-frombehind wins is huge.

Going to 3-1 on the year is huge, but starting hot and putting together four quarters will be our greatest accomplishment.

We hope to show that Friday.”

The Reagan County Owls are shaping up to be the comeback kings of West Texas.

The team rallied from 20 points down Friday night to take their second come-from-behind road win in a row with a 42-34 finish over Forsan.

“I’m too young for this,” Coach Blake Weston joked following the game. “I’m glad we got the win. I just wish we could come out like that in the first half.”

The Owls were down 20-0 to Forsan with six and a half minutes remaining in the first half when they showed their first signs of life.

“We had good fight down the stretch,” Weston said. “The fight this group has is crazy” Forsan held their 20 point lead for exactly one play before junior Samuel Goodloe made his mark.

Goodloe broke four tackles on a sweep play to the left as he took the ball 64 yards to the endzone.

The Owls would trade series with the Buffaloes before heading into the

locker room for halftime down 6-20.

“A big reason for our win tonight was halftime adjustments,” Weston said. “We don’t know how people are going to play us early. We get the chance to see how they are going to line up in the first half, and make our adjustments.”

Weston praised the Owls for their ability to make those adjustments on the fly.

“They have a never quit attitude,” Weston said.

“We keep getting punched in the mouth during the first half though. We have to find a way to start our games a little better.”

The Owls opened the second half with a six play drive featuring quarterback Alex Chavez.

Chavez, who finished the night with a total 341 yards of offense to his name, reeled off five runs on the drive for 65 yards and capped it with a touchdown.

Reagan County swapped drives with Forsan again before a huge pass play set the team up for their next score.

On September 2, Shot’s reported a car from out of state drove off from their key pumps without paying for gasoline. The quick action taken by employees enabled area officers to apprehend the man at Mertzon.

GAME PREVIEW: Reagan County Travels to Ozona The Reagan County Owls look to be on a roll.

The team notched its second come-from-behind win this last Friday with a 42-34 decision in Forsan.

They now turn their attention to the Ozona Lions.

“They are a very young team,” Coach Blake Weston said. “They graduated 12 seniors last year from a 2A team.”

Weston said his Owls shouldn’t read too much into last year’s 49-21 win over the Lions or the fact that they have so many young players on the field.

“They are young,”

Weston said. “Young and fast.”

Ozona Coach Kyle Freeman said he expects a dog fight.

“We have a great sophomore class,” Freeman said. “They have picked up a lot of slack for us. Most kids their age are playing JV ball, but this group is playing on Fridays.”

Freeman said his team’s schedule has helped them gain experience in a hurry.

“We’ve faced two ranked teams in Sonora and Iraan,” Freeman said. “We played well against Iraan, and lost to Crane on a two-point

conversion. We are seeing success now, and I feel it will start to roll for us.”

Coach Weston said he gives the edge at every position to the Owls.

“They have great players,” Weston said. “But I think we have the edge in experience. Especially at the quarterback position.”

Weston said Ozona will be extremely fast, will try to spread the field, and will look to run.

“They will look a lot like us,” Weston said. “We have to put together a full game this week.”

Freeman said his main concern with the Owls lies in their defensive ends, Chance Darr and

Kodee Warriner.

“They are both good athletes,” Freeman said. “They play good, sound ball. We have to control them.”

Freeman also said quarterback Alex Chavez is being relied on heavily by the Owls, and they will work to stop him.

“I will say I am glad Reagan County moved away from the Wing T,” Freeman said. “They were very good at the Wing T and had success last year. It doesn’t bother me at all that they are putting those players in a spread look.”

The game is slated for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff Friday in Ozona.

8th Grade Owls Drop to Forsan; Look to Rebound Today The 8th grade football team came up short last Thursday night against a very good Forsan team, falling by the score of 29-0. Forsan scored in each quarter while the Owls have yet to find any real footing on offense.

The Owls haven’t been able to transfer the great practices they have each

week into positive results in a game. Defensively the Owls are closing the gap on the other teams but need more consistency. The Owls will have another big test this week as they take on Ozona in Ozona.

Sheriff’s Department Moves to Purchase Used Florida Vehicles Reagan County Chief Deputy Destin Wilha notified the commissioners Monday of his department’s intention to purchase three used vehicles from a Florida based company for use by administrators.

Wilha said he, the Sheriff and a captain will drive the used vehicles and pass thier current patrol vehicles on to deputies to help phase out vehicles that are having mechanical issues.

“We have $39,368.00 in our budget for vehicles,” Wilha said. “We will be able to get three of these used vehicles for that amount.”

The Florida based company purchases low mileage government vehicles at auction and refurbishes them for law enforcement use.

Wilha said the vehicles will be delivered to Big Lake for that price and will buy the department time until the next budget year.

Sheriff Garner said he has no concerns with water damage on the vehicles since Florida did not flood like Houston did during their recent hurricane.

The vehicles are a pair of 2011 Ford Crown Victorias and a 2014 Dodge Charger.

“We have relied on the body camera footage when needed,” Wilha said. “The in-car cameras are a must though.”

Sheriff Jeff Garner described the department’s in-car video system as hit and miss as of late, but said the problems haven’t caused any issues in court.

“We haven’t lost any cases or evidence,” Garner said. “Just would be nice to have that other angle from the car.”

Garner said there have been a couple of times when its been touch and go, though.

“On traffic stops it is hard to use only the body footage,” Garner said.

“That’s because you can’t see everything that leads up to the stop. It hasn’t hurt us as bad as it could have.”

Garner said he expects the installation of the new in-car cameras to take around two months to complete.

“We are also looking at purchasing new body cameras through this same company next year,” Wilha said. “The body and vehicle cameras will record to the same file at that point making it easier to view both perspectives in court.”

The total cost of the new in-car camera systems is roughly $50,000 with the county budgetting $20,000 and the City of Big Lake budgetting $32,000 in thier 2017-18 budgets.
