Inspiring the Future Countless Coachella Valley residents are familiar with BIGHORN because of its compassionate and philanthropic Members who have altered and improved the lives of so many. BIGHORN Members have always been privately generous. But since 2005, they’ve come together to give as a community, and the incredible impact has surpassed their wildest dreams! After a successful grassroots campaign raising $1.5 million for Hurricane Katrina, Members raised another $11 million to establish the Eisenhower BIGHORN Radiation Oncology Center. Soon thereafter, BIGHORN Golf Club Charities (BGCC) was formed paving the way to reach out to the diversity of needs of the entire Coachella Valley. Twelve years later, three highly visible, successful and inspiring programs are supported by Members’ generosity.

As Charities Manager Danielle Ortega shares, “We have something for everyone. If your passion is children, BIGHORN Cares has funded Boys & Girls Clubs, educational trips, after school programs, and activities for special needs kids. BIGHORN Behind a Miracle (BAM) assists local cancer patients by providing the latest medical equipment, transportation to treatment, and resources to cover life’s basic costs. And the BIGHORN Scholarship Program supports college education for veterans and students.” This wide blanket of humanitarianism was recognized in November 2016, when National Fundraising Professionals (NFP) gave BIGHORN Golf Club Charities the Outstanding Philanthropic Corporation Award!

BIGHORN Cares has supported our local Boys & Girls Clubs valley-wide, fixing their dilapidated gyms, enhancing play spaces, and funding air-conditioners to keep thousands of kids engaged in healthy activities and off the streets.

A BIGHORN Cares Grant funded the Coachella Valley Rescue Mission’s Food Prep and Cook Training Program which gives the homeless practical experience in using restaurant equipment to help them get jobs. We are proud to fund: Coachella Valley Rescue Mission, Find Food Bank, Full of Grace, Hidden Harvest, Mission Outreach Project, Martha’s Village & Kitchen, and The Narrow Door for feeding and clothing our growing out-of-work population.

“To say that BIGHORN Members have big hearts would be an understatement,” said Harold Matzner NFP spokesperson in his speech at the honoring event. “Their giving is visionary. And at their helm is their Chairman and my dear friend, R.D. Hubbard, who believes in helping people thrive and develop into their best selves.” From an audience rapt with awe over BIGHORN’s disbursement of over $100 million in charitable contributions since 2005, Mr. Hubbard received a standing ovation. It was a humble moment of pride and accomplishment for every BIGHORN Member who has chosen to be a part of this actively generous Club. Supporting Underserved Non-Profits: BIGHORN Cares Just three years old, BIGHORN Cares has already given 132 grants totaling over $1.32 million to well-deserving non-profits across the lowest-income parts of the Coachella Valley. Most are smaller, devoted organizations that lack established donors yet work tirelessly to squeeze the most from their tight budgets to serve the most people. Attending to the most at-risk sectors of our community, these organizations feed, house, and air-condition the

homeless. They provide meals, school supplies, clothing, and enriching programs to children, and they move young people off the streets and back on track to building a future. Through the BIGHORN Cares grants, disabled kids and adults have the opportunity to hear, see, or play sports for the first time. Area veterans have a chance to go to school and receive counseling. Anti-bullying and youth suicide prevention programs are supported, along with job-search assistance for low-income families. And the list goes on. Danielle visits each finalist in a process of due diligence that ensures funds will be used responsibly. “I’ve lived in this valley my whole life and I didn’t know even a quarter of all the non-profits we have here,” she says. She has had the privilege of seeing BIGHORN’s compassion in action firsthand, witnessing children with disabilities hit their first home run in the Baseball Buddies program and emotionally abused and neglected boys at Father’s Heart Ranch work together to plant a garden, play on a playground, and enjoy air-conditioning in a safe, nurturing environment that prompts them to turn away from the dead ends of drugs and crime.

community college, four-year university, and graduate program scholarships. These scholarships advance career opportunities and significantly change the lives of the recipient scholars, BIGHORN employees, and their families. Employees have also been eager to participate in BIGHORN’s English as a Second Language program. “Our annual Holiday Toy Drive started during the recession,” Danielle says. “The kids who received toys when it started are now in the scholarship program. I have photos of them with their toys; now they’re in college!” Over 2,200 gifts have been placed in the hands of deserving children since 2006. “It’s amazing to work for a place that cares about the community as much as BIGHORN does and has the means to do something about it,” Danielle praises. Elevating Patient Care and Saving Lives: BIGHORN BAM

The Allen family is the lucky recipient of a childcare grant for Veteran students attending College of the Desert who use their GI benefits to fund their education. Families are excluded from state grants to fund childcare subsidies so BIGHORN Cares has stepped in to cover costs.

The first year of the program, Danielle says she followed a dirt road to reach an after-school program in Thermal. “It was run by a sweet nun who told me the kids come all summer long so they aren’t exposed to local drug dealers,” she says. “Across the valley, kids aren’t eating because there are no school lunches during the summer. Thermal is 20 minutes away, but it’s a completely different way of life.” One that is vastly improved by BIGHORN Cares Grants. The charities have come to know each other and foster relationships among themselves. Father’s Heart Ranch has started to use the anti-anxiety computer program from CSUSB to help their boys who represent some of the worst-case scenarios for their age group. Danielle receives heartfelt updates, photos, and videos from BIGHORN Cares recipients that she passes along to Members. “We funded a science camp for 25 fifth-graders. They were so excited to dissect a squid! It was an amazing experience they would never have had in their Coachella classroom.” Creating Educational Opportunities: BIGHORN Golf Club Charities Scholarship Program In addition to assisting veterans at College of the Desert, this program has raised over $6 million and gifted over 500

BIGHORN Behind a Miracle (BAM) has a reputation for its hardline fight against breast cancer on a local level, but its advanced radiation therapy technologies have healed patients with a myriad of cancers. In 2017, BAM celebrated a Decade of Miracles. The millions of dollars BAM has contributed to Eisenhower Lucy Curci Cancer Center have given patients their best chance at beating cancer and significantly evolved the desert’s medical care as a whole. Each year, the organization touches families, improves care, eases financial and transportation burdens, alters outcomes, saves lives, and brightens the future of breast care patients valley-wide. Supporters of BAM have raised over $7.5 million over the past 10 years for cancer patient support services, breast cancer diagnostic technologies, and educational scholarships. Through BAM’s generous donations, two new BIGHORN BAM Vans transport radiation and chemotherapy patients to treatment. More than 10,000 rides have already shuttled patients in need who would normally rely on public transportation. BAM also supports The Pendleton Foundation’s outreach to give financially strapped cancer patients grocery and gas gift cards they need to survive. Talk about changing people’s lives! The contagious enthusiasm of the organization’s leaders has spread to fellow BIGHORN Members, valley donors, volunteers, and sponsors. A genuine spirit of giving has helped BAM grow, rippling out to make a grassroots difference like no other and recognized as a model for fun and active fundraising. 11

“Breast cancer survivors are mothers, sisters, daughters – women who matter to the lives they take care of and the people they love. By supporting The Pendleton Foundation, BIGHORN BAM annually supports 300 families a year fighting cancer, easing financial and transportation burdens and building a brighter future.” – Debi Aarthun, BAM Chair

TrueBeam STX Linear Accelerator, the most advanced radiation equipment available. “BAM has transformed cancer care at Eisenhower Medical Center by providing $6 million to fund the latest diagnostic capabilities for 30,000 patients per year visiting the Lucy Curci Cancer Center. “It’s so wonderful to practice in a setting where the philanthropic community allows the hospital and physicians to continually be able to deliver the best care possible.”

“Thanks to BAM, nearly 10,000 round trip rides have been given to patients in need who rely on public transportation. The BIGHORN BAM vans provide safe, reliable transportation ensuring that patients receive treatment on schedule helping them get better faster. That’s a miracle!” – Alison Sachs, Community Outreach Patient Support Services Director Eisenhower Lucy Curci Cancer Center

– Monica Khanna, MD, Medical Director Eisenhower BIGHORN Radiation Oncology Center

“Together we can transform another 100,000 lives and make millions more miracles happen! Because of your generosity, lives wil be saved; because you care, cancer survivors will live longer; and because of your compassion, cancer patients that need support will have it!” – Selby Dunham, BIGHORN BAM Founder and 12-year breast cancer survivor

“Together we have transformed 100,000 lives through purchasing state-of-the-art, cancer-fighting equipment, providing nearly 10,000 round-trip rides in BAM Van transportation, and assisting in paying household bills through The Pendleton Foundation, so those fighting this disease can focus on getting well,” says BAM Founder Selby Dunham.

many who have been touched will never know that BIGHORN Members were the reason their children have a backpack and new shoes for school, or their wife received a life-saving early detection for breast cancer, or their friend received the chance to better themselves through education. For BIGHORN, the outcome, not the credit, is the sincere motivator.

“When you see the BAM vans drive by, it gives you chills knowing that someone is getting a much-needed ride to chemo or radiation treatment and we had a hand in that.”

The theme for the 2016 National Philanthropy Day luncheon honoring BIGHORN Golf Club Charities was, “Change the World With a Giving Heart.” It’s a theme BIGHORN authentically embodies each and every season and no doubt the reason it was recognized as the Outstanding Philanthropic Corporation.

A Club That Cares At the start of each season, BIGHORN rolls out its calendar of not-your-ordinary fundraisers. As Danielle describes, “In November, we have the BGCC Pro Am Invitational Golf Tournament featuring 25 Top Champions Tour golfers and BAM’s A Miracle on El Paseo, open to the public, where the feel-good environment and magical block party gets everyone in the holiday spirit with music, a Ferris wheel, treats, and a 200 ft zipline!” This event is one that families look forward to for months and one that supports BAM’s aggressive cancer-related efforts. “In December, we announce the recipients of BIGHORN Cares grants. So for the first two months when Members return to BIGHORN, it’s a homecoming of fun, friendship, and making a difference together.” BIGHORN’s combined philanthropic efforts since 2005 are staggering. The giving is real and palpable and the results stretch across the entire Coachella Valley. Of course,

At the 10th Anniversary celebration Night of Miracles, a standing ovation was given to BAM Founder Selby Dunham, who led the organization to raising over $7.5 million for local cancer support services. Quite a feat in only 10 short years!

Distinctive Honor By Lisa Marie Hart

Entrepreneur, Humanitarian, and Philanthropist Receives Prestigious Horatio Alger Award Yet another BIGHORN Member who has overcome significant challenges to achieve professional and personal success has recently been honored with the Horatio Alger award. In the Spring of 2017, Harold Matzner flew to Washington, D.C., to attend the 70th Annual Horatio Alger Awards as one of its newest Members. Founded in 1947, the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans, Inc. is a nonprofit educational organization dedicated to the simple but powerful belief that hard work, honesty, and determination can conquer all obstacles. The association honors the achievements of outstanding leaders who have accomplished remarkable successes in spite of adversity. While growing up in Newark, New Jersey, Matzner, his younger brother, and his parents lived with his grandfather, a Hebrew teacher and cantor in a synagogue. Although Matzner’s parents’ values and integrity provided a good influence and a strong foundation for his solid character, academics proved to be challenging. “School was tough because I was dyslexic. In those days they had no idea what that was; they didn’t know how to deal with it,” Matzner says. Even then, he says, opportunities were limited without a college degree. “I knew it was important. But I also knew I would have a very tough struggle. The tools weren’t there. Nobody was there to help, and it was almost impossible to overcome that on your own.” Matzner’s entrepreneurial spirit took hold even as a young boy – and it never stopped. Today, this founding Chairman of CBA Industries Inc., a NY/NJ-based branding, advertising, and marketing company, is known throughout the valley for his generosity and his unceasing vision for the area’s vitality.

BIGHORN Chairman R.D. Hubbard was proud to present the prestigious Horatio Alger Award to his friend Harold Matzner.

Matzner has contributed more than $60 million to area non-profits since 1997. As owner of Palm Springs’ popular Spencer’s Restaurant, 15

he distributes profits to local charities. He has long served as Chairman of the McCallum Theatre and the Palm Springs International Film Festival, and as executive vice chair of Palm Springs Art Museum. Matzner chairs several fundraising events each year and serves on the Board of Trustees of the Eisenhower Medical Center and Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center. His impact has rippled out to every corner of the Coachella Valley in shaping our culture and securing its vibrancy. “Becoming a member of the Horatio Alger Association makes me very proud. I am thrilled to join in an association that’s committed to helping the youth of America, who are the future of America,” he says. As part of the association’s programming, Horatio Alger Members serve as role models and mentors. They actively support promising young people by providing them with the resources and encouragement to follow their dreams. Since the establishment of the association’s scholarship program in 1984, more than 25,000 deserving, at-risk young students have experienced the hard-earned, life-changing opportunity to pursue a college education. “It’s important to keep learning throughout our life,” says Matzner. “I think we all learn from our most challenging moments. They help us learn how to find solutions – which is what business is all about and, to a large degree, what life is all about.”

During the three-day event last spring, Matzner was among 11 exceptional business, civic, and philanthropic leaders presented with the Horatio Alger Award by Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas in the courtroom of the United States Supreme Court. The elite group of individuals known for their strong work ethic represents the organization’s core values: perseverance, integrity, and a commitment to excellence. Matzner joined John Elway, former quarterback and now general manager of the Denver Broncos; Dr. Valerie Montgomery Rice, president and dean of the Morehouse School of Medicine; and Byron Pitts, ABC News chief national correspondent and Nightline co-anchor, among others in being honored with lifetime membership into the association. Matzner is the sixth BIGHORN Member to receive this distinction. Tony Novelly, chairman of the Horatio Alger Association, looks forward each year to recognizing the outstanding accomplishments of the new Members and National Scholars. “Their stories of personal strength and resilience serve as important reminders that the American Dream is still thriving in the United States today,” he says. “Their successes are inspiring.” For Matzner, the award prompted him to reflect back to those childhood years of difficulty in school. “My life has turned out very, very well,” he says. “If you have the strength and courage, you can make almost anything happen.”

All In The Family

By Lisa Marie Hart Photography by Mark Davidson

Twelve years ago, Laura and Joe Gregorio discovered BIGHORN and their amazing Canyons home. With custom additions to accommodate their 15-member family, it has become the complete package and an all-ages dream home. “It was one of the best decisions we ever made,” shares Laura. “Now we come home to a place we can simply relax. Between the character of the Club and the space throughout our home where the kids are free to play and explore, it is the perfect combination for our family.” The Gregorios are not only a strong and connected family unit, they also work side-by-side together in the family crane maintenance business. So when they make some well-deserved down time to escape to BIGHORN, the 11,000 sf home and guest house instantly transform into

“The Gregorio Resort.” Laura and Joe’s four children range in age from 26-36: Joseph Jr., Jennifer, Andrew, and Robert. And the couple’s five charming grandchildren are always in tow. Josh (age 19) is a student at the University of Arizona and is an avid golfer. Joseph “Joey Jr.” (age 11) plays flag football, baseball, and loves to swim. Mackenzie (age 9) loves to dance and dances competitively in Orange County. Courtney (age 8) enjoys singing and performing in theatrical productions. The youngest at age 5, Cooper is fast learning how to play T-Ball and is off to kindergarten. Long familiar with the desert, the large Italian family originally owned two homes next to each other at another club – but everyone wanted to be under one roof. “It was hysterical to see all of us in one small home,” laughs Laura.

“Plus, when we get together, we just want to have fun and not worry about getting dressed up. The other club required jackets and ties in the Clubhouse and kids who had to sit still and be quiet. When we found BIGHORN, we knew we were home. We all love it here!”

seven bedrooms and nine bathrooms. “It’s plenty of room for the 15 of us to call home,” Laura affirms. Their home sits at the very end of their street with incredible privacy and a view of the Canyons course with the majestic Santa Rosas as a backdrop.

Now everyone can visit together in the same residence more than comfortably. Laura and Joe expanded the main house to four bedrooms by adding a bedroom and bathroom. In the guest house, they added another bedroom and bathroom, creating three bedrooms and three bathrooms. Between both houses, they can welcome the troops with

“We even added a fun video arcade area downstairs and another one in the garage where the kids love to play. And some of the adults, too!” she says. A massive pool and two Jacuzzis beckon the entire crew to swim and soak. “We are a short walk to the Golf House and the Canyons Steak House, so we take full advantage of them. And we are so

The Gregorio family loves the time they spend at BIGHORN including swimming and riding their golf carts around campus. “We are all big fans of BIGHORN’s annual Snow Day with the 200’ Zipline, carnival games, laser tag, giant inflatables, dance contests, and the In-n-Out Burger truck!” share Laura and Joe. “Every visit we hang out at the Kiddin’ Around Play Park with Oreo Cookie shakes as a treat!” 22

excited about the new BIGHORN Clubhouse. We think the Penthouses are a brilliant idea and the entire plan is something our family will really enjoy using.” Joe notes that since they are still in the working world, weekends are usually when they get to enjoy BIGHORN. “We try to attend as many events as we can because we really enjoy all the family activities,” he shares. “We are a big family so when we show up we love that we are welcomed and our grandkids can be kids. Our biggest priority is to have a great time – and at BIGHORN you don’t have to try, you just enjoy. It’s the best lifestyle for us!” For the Gregorios, that means starting their day at the Golf House where, Laura says, “We are served the most amazing

and special breakfasts. Our grandkids love powdered sugar on their waffles and somehow it comes without even having to ask!” she marvels. “We have yet to meet any staff members who have been anything but helpful, reliable, and genuine in how they treat us and our family and friends. They know us, not only by name, but our habits, our likes, and our dislikes. But most of all, they know how to make you smile. Everyone makes an effort to make a connection with us and make us feel at home.” “Just pulling into BIGHORN there is a combined, ‘Ahhhhh!’” she sighs. “Golf is always fun and challenging. When we have time to use the Spa & Wellness Center, we head for the gym, salon, and a good massage. Our kids love the family activities. Basically, BIGHORN is our utopia!”

Joe and Laura met while attending San Pedro High School where Joe played football and Laura was a cheerleader. They have been happily married since 1979. 23

The billiards table, pool, two Jacuzzis, arcade, and home theater are favorite family hangouts.

Feeding the Economy Joe is Chairman and CEO of Pacific Crane Maintenance Company (PCMC), a leading provider of maintenance and repair services for on-dock, shore-based ship loading/ unloading and cargo handling equipment at major container ports along the West Coast. Joe founded PCMC in 1990 with a partner and the two of them secured their first contract. Since that time, Joe has bought the company and now it is completely family-owned. Joe, Laura, and their four children are working always to broaden and grow the business. Their eldest son, Joseph, went to Marymount University and has been with the company for the past 18 years. Joseph is the Chief Operating Officer and works tirelessly, day and night, handling all aspects of the business to make things happen. Their daughter, Jennifer, has her

Master’s Degree in Education from Loyola Marymount University and taught school for six years prior to being a full-time mother of two. Jennifer serves as a Board Member of the founding company along with Andrew and Robert. In the maintenance yard of PCMC, Andrew works on equipment and keeps the business moving. Andrew is a graduate of San Diego State University and also has his real estate license. Their youngest son, Robert, graduated from San Diego State University, went onto Southwestern Law School, recently passed the Bar, and just started at PCMC where he is part of the legal team working hard on contract and labor law issues. Keeping it in the family, Jennifer’s husband Kyle Clinton graduated from USC, and has been with PCMC for the past 13 years as their Senior VP of Outside Projects. Their daughter-in-law, Danielle,

Everyone in the 15-member family loves living on a golf course, and The Gregorio boys all golf. Their son Joey played on his high school golf team, as did grandson Josh. “We are teaching Joey to play golf with his Papa now that he is 11 and can enjoy everything about the game,” says Joe. “Andy and Robert are natural athletes who played football for the San Diego State Aztecs and are both avid golfers, and son-in-law Kyle rounds out the six-some.”

married to Joey, is the mother to three of their grandchildren and is a talented Interior Designer. Danielle is currently working on updating PCMC’s Long Beach office.

“Our company supplies the means to help feed the economy,” beams Joe. PCMC is a pretty impressive operation, started by one electrician with a dream.

As a service provider to the world’s leading shipping and terminal operating companies, PCMC’s maintenance and repair services assist in the efficient operations of the country’s most highly trafficked container ports. Manned with over 1,000 employees, PCMC works diligently to keep terminal operations seamless. Container ships are efficiently offloaded in the most economical manner, allowing much needed goods and services to travel into our country.

Joe’s mechanical background developed when he was a young man in need of a job. Joe’s father managed DiCarlo’s Bakery in San Pedro and he suggested Joe work as the maintenance mechanic fixing the machines in the bakery. This was where Joe fine-tuned his mechanical expertise. Soon he became an Electrical Contractor, working nights as a mechanic and as an electrician by day. He obtained his General Contractors license and worked on several substantial buildings before deciding to venture out

“Spoiling our grandkids is the best part of being a grandparent,” says Laura. “But at BIGHORN, it’s everyone who gets to be spoiled!”

25

“After two years of restoration – including installing the most beautiful chrome 427 Roush Motor engine you’ve ever seen – it was ready for The Vault,” says Joe of his award-winning 1940s custom Ford truck. It joins the family’s red 1929 Roadster in The Vault.

and open his own maintenance company. When PCMC opened its doors in 1990, Joe worked out of a pickup truck with one bag of tools. Now, 27 years later, PCMC employs over 900 mechanics and around 100 clerical staff and field managers in order to support their vast customer base. “I couldn’t run the business without my faithful family members,” surmises Joe. “Everyone is integral to the success of the business and to the livelihood of our family. And I wouldn’t want it any other way! Who would have thought 40 years ago that Laura and I would have the life we have today? We are one very lucky family!” “And then there’s The Vault,” grins Joe when asked how he likes to unwind. “Everything about it is incredible. As soon as it was announced, I was in! Gorgeous garage, fabulous social atmosphere, great drinks, and one of the best car collections I’ve ever seen.” Inside, the family maintains two cars: a 1940s custom Ford truck and a head-turning 1929 Ford Roadster, both shined to perfection.

“My passion is older cars,” Joe explains of the prized automobiles he purchased from his brother-in-law, Darrin DelConte. Both originally belonged to Darrin’s father, Jerry DelConte, a great man and local icon in the South Bay. Darrin recalls these sleek machines were his late father’s favorite pastime. He could often be found tinkering under the hood. “After I bought the truck, a friend of mine said he could transform it into something pretty amazing,” Joe recalls. A completely refurbished showpiece, the truck won 3 awards in April 2017 at a show in Seal Beach including Best Street Rod in the Show and People’s Choice Award. “Every chance we get we are at The Vault checking out our cars and others’,” Joe says. “We only hope the other Members enjoy the ‘ride’ as much as we do!”

In 2017, BIGHORN welcomed PGA Tour phenom Jon Rahm as a new Member and ambassador of the BIGHORN brand. BIGHORN Chairman R.D. Hubbard saw in Rahm a unique opportunity to promote BIGHORN’s world-class lifestyle with its spirit to be the best! “I am thrilled to be a part of the BIGHORN family,” said Rahm. “To be partnered with an internationally recognized club such as BIGHORN is incredible.” Oliver McVeigh/Getty Images Sports/Getty Images

Rahm is one of the hottest players in the world with his July 2017 win at the Irish Open. Rahm set the tournament scoring record with a final score of 24-under par, 264, which was the lowest winning score by three shots in this prestigious European Tour event. He has moved to 6th in the Official 0World Golf Rankings, finished 5th in the 2017 FedEx Cup Race, and is currently 3rd in the Race to Dubai on the European Tour. 29

Raised in Barrika, Spain, Rahm is a proud graduate of Arizona State University and he is the only two-time winner of the Ben Hogan Award, an honor that recognizes the outstanding male amateur and collegiate golfer of the year. He also won the Jack Nicklaus Award in 2016, is a four-time NCAA All-American and has the distinct honor of being the #1 ranked amateur player in the world for the most weeks (60) and winning the 2015 Mark H. McCormack Medal as the leading player in the World Amateur Golf Ranking. The explosive arrival of Jon Rahm onto the coveted stage of the PGA Tour came at the 2017 Farmers Insurance Open where he won his first PGA Tour

event in style, holing a 60-foot eagle putt on the final hole. With additional impressive finishes at the World Golf Championship event in Mexico (T-3rd) and World Golf Championship Match Play event (2nd), Rahm has proven that he belongs in the conversation with the world’s elite in golf and hopefully culminates with becoming the #1 player in the world! “At just 22 years old, Rahm is one of the most exciting players to come along on the PGA Tour in a long time,” said BIGHORN Chairman R.D. Hubbard. “We see an enormous amount of talent and potential, and we look forward to watching him represent BIGHORN in the coming years.”

In April 2017, BIGHORN featured a New Generation of Golf Exhibition. Jon Rahm played with Charlie Reiter, the 24th nationally ranked junior golfer in the U.S. and Lucy Li, the 2016 PGA Junior Champion and youngest female player ever to qualify for the U.S. Women’s Amateur and the U.S. Women’s Open Championships. A full gallery of Members and guests attended the exhibition and marveled at the long and short game of these rising stars who, as a group, made 15 birdies in the 12 holes they played!

BIGHORN’s tennis program reached another milestone this year with a dynamic exhibition, the Kate Laver Tennis Invitational, as a fundraiser benefitting special needs children and their families. The event was held on BIGHORN’s brand new tennis courts and featured ATP Newcomer-of-theYear Taylor Fritz playing against 2016 Jr. French Tennis Open Champion Bjorn Fratangelo for a $15,000 Purse and the Mason Zisette Memorial Heart Trophy. The balls flying back and forth across the court led to a 6 games to 4 win for Bjorn – and a very impressed audience. The crowd then erupted in laughter and good fun as emcee Jon Lovitz called the match featuring the most celebrated doubles team in men’s tennis, identical twins Mike and Bob Bryan, whose opponents were the legendary Murphy and Luke Jensen, men’s doubles winners of the 1993 French Open. Known for their antics and chest bumps, the Jensen Brothers had the crowd roaring with laughter even though the Bryan Brothers were on fire taking an easy lead. At one point, the Bryan Brothers traded in their new technology for wood racquets, had Jon Lovitz fill in for a point that he actually won, and laid their rackets down on the courts as they sat down after a double fault serve by Murphy Jensen. The jabs and friendly camaraderie were fantastically entertaining, with the Bryan Brothers winning 6 games to 4.

“To have these talented young pros and impressive players at BIGHORN was an exceptional experience for our Members,” shares BIGHORN Chairman R.D. Hubbard. “As our tennis Membership grows, our Tennis & Fitness Director, Frank Fanning, will create even more unique, interactive experiences for our Members.” Inspired by 10-year-old Kate Laver, born with Cerebral Palsy, the Kate Laver Invitational raised over $750,000 benefitting AngelView, Pegasus Riding Academy, and United Cerebral Palsy of the Inland Empire. These nonprofits that serve children with special needs receive valuable equipment and support services needed to improve their quality of life and sustain a strong family bond. In addition, a special treadmill was given to the child support services located in Indio and Palm Springs to help 100 children work through therapy to learn how to walk.

Hustle, Hit, and Never Quit BIGHORN’s thriving tennis program kicked off last season with BIGHORN’s Tennis Classic. “It was a variety of fun, interactive drills blended with spirited camaraderie,” shares Member Kerry Killinger. “We were thrilled that everyone could share this experience, and as we always say, ‘Tennis players have more fun!’ ” The fabulous day turned into a fabulous dinner party for 80. Whether you are just starting out or are a future Club champ, BIGHORN’s exemplary tennis program is right for you! With a variety of Drill & Plays, Beginner and Advanced Clinics, Ladies’ Play and Men’s Doubles, and Junior Sessions, you can enhance

your skills, learn new techniques, and meet other Members who have a passion to play. Considered a tight-knit group, the tennis Members all have a ball! “Frank runs an entertaining and growing tennis program that has attracted a wide variety of players of all abilities who enjoy tennis and good friends through parties and other social events,” describes Tony Ogrodnick, General Manager. “Our outstanding tennis program has attracted many new Members to BIGHORN, and we encourage all Members to try out the complimentary Drill & Plays and quality tennis instruction.”

BIGHORN will continue to provide the best instruction and Club Championship tournaments, but the real value to BIGHORN’s tennis program is the social network of players and how readily they welcome new tennis players at BIGHORN. “I am proud of the work that we have done with the growth in the tennis program,” says Fanning, “but the real heroes in the program’s growth are the Members. They bring in new players and, even more importantly, they welcome and indoctrinate the new Members into this exciting and active life at BIGHORN.”

Imaginative, Innovative, Inspired Photography by Mark Davidson BIGHORN Members will kick off their 2017-2018 season with the grandest of unveilings: a brand new, 80,000 sf Clubhouse with four unique, ultra-exclusive Penthouses. So many people said it couldn’t be done. Tear down the old Clubhouse and build a bigger, state-of-the-art, new one over a single season! Impossible. Well, it’s happened. In 16 short months from July 2016 to November 2017 the new Clubhouse is ready to welcome the Club’s Members to their exhilarating new home! Thanks to the leadership and direction of R.D. Hubbard, BIGHORN’s visionary Chairman, and the passion and “can do” attitude of everyone associated with fulfilling the vision and completing the impossible, the new Clubhouse is a reality. The Clubhouse which is a significant modern statement of beauty, quality and utility, owes its soaring splendor to a design and construction team, each of whom is acclaimed and internationally recognized, composed of Swaback Partners Architects, Lusardi Construction Company, Blackbird Interiors and Guy Dreier Designs, as well as over 300 trades, international and domestic suppliers, and well over a thousand individuals making contributions to its completion and outcome.

The contemporary look of the new Clubhouse employs a breathtaking use of light and space to blend timeless style with the newest, state-of-the-art amenities. The Clubhouse, at 1,000 feet above the valley floor, was sited so as to deftly incorporate magnificent surrounding views of mountain, valley, and golf course under our ever-present blue sky. The Mountains Course 18th Green nestles at the foot of the Clubhouse alongside a lake that reaches back into the fairway in front of a backdrop of waterfall, stream and desert rock formation. The Clubhouse may begin with golf, but it doesn’t end there. As R.D. Hubbard makes point to note, “The Clubhouse is as much about living, playing, and entertaining as it is about enjoying a spectacular game of golf.” Although created to meet Members’ needs, “the design is anything but ordinary,” explains Swaback Partner John Sather, AIA, AICP. “We wanted to embrace the character of the surroundings and create an awe-inspiring design that moves the building forward, celebrating the panoramic mountain and down-valley views. We have created a seamless blend of indoor/outdoor living with an organic arc that welcomes you into the space, almost embracing you into the relaxed, fun, utopia lifestyle beyond.”

37

“BIGHORN’s Clubhouse won’t be like anywhere else because the Membership is unlike anywhere else,” Sather continues. “BIGHORN’s successful Membership is open to bold, new ideas while at the same time wanting the ‘downtime’, casual feel that comes with enjoying a vacation retreat, a place where you hear laughter everywhere and you make friends easily. Certainly there are elements of sophistication and organic materials, but it’s their inviting warmth and design that will embrace Members and their families and make them feel like they are home. This new gathering place blurs the lines of art and architecture, becoming one with great friends, food, wine, and just celebrating life together. What could be better than that?” Lead Project Architect Brent Harris shares, “The Clubhouse began as a line drawing of two opposing arcs that draw near each other and then away, inviting entry at the porte cochere and then, as the arcs open to the view to the North, dramatically presenting the valley and mountains beyond. In constructing these two powerful arcs, a series of gridlines were laid out radially, emphasizing the organic casualness to create the perfect sense of contentment and relaxation, and showcasing those panoramic views.” “The radials provide a pattern to locate the community uses, i.e. the living room, dining, concierge, locker rooms, retail, and event spaces. The result is a dynamic structure supplemented by an efficient use of space.”

38

Swaback Partners’ John Sather designed these “Calderesque leaves” not only to complement the dramatic wave ceiling high above but also to provide the functionality of lighting, air-conditioning, audio system and security to the spectacular Living Room and Pour House.

“Since the Clubhouse is built on curves and radii,” says Carl Cardinalli, BIGHORN President, “there are very few right angles anywhere in the building. Although this fundamental design element optimizes views and makes for a visually striking building, it also creates a very complicated structure which was extremely challenging to build.” A surprising result was how this challenge elicited an enthusiastic “can do” attitude from everyone involved and not just from managers and supervisors. As Cardinalli relates, “One day, as I was making my rounds, I asked a framer about the difficulty of framing The Pour House banquette – which involves multiple walls, all curved, coming together in different planes. He said, ‘It’s really hard. But I love doing it because it’s such a challenge. I don’t get to do this every day!’ To me, that’s key: he seized the day, he challenged himself and used his talent, and felt good about himself. The end result is a beautiful, high-quality, unique environment for the Members and guests to enjoy.” From the moment you first see the Clubhouse you’ll notice the gorgeous, caramelcolored, imported travertine stone exterior. This timeless material cut from a quarry in Portugal is ideally suited for expressing the smooth, contemporary architecture of the design and provides the perfect canvas for the play of light and shadow as the sun makes its way across the sky. “Everywhere you look,” adds Cardinalli, “you’ll be amazed and because the scene is dynamic, you’ll never tire of it.” Defining a roofline that terminates in impossibly sleek spires jutting into the sky is nearly 2,000 lineal feet of champagne-bronze metallic looking fascia. The travertine and fascia contrasting to blue sky background is dazzling. And not to be overlooked is the white Peruvian limestone floor that extends throughout the building from your first steps under the porte cochere to the stairs leading to the Event Terrace. A perfect complement to the travertine walls.

39

Two million pounds of structural steel, 1 million pounds of rebar, and 95,000 cubic feet of concrete have established the stretch and magnitude of the structure. The gleaming, glass panels that act as “see-through” rails on patios and staircases distinctively reinforce the architecture while maintaining the building’s impeccable views. Each glass panel weighing 450 pounds is a unique feature that provides safety and functionality. “Vertically, the Clubhouse’s signature form is highlighted by the central roof structure located nearly 51 feet above the floor of the first level,” shares Harris. “The shape is derived from a few selected radii combining to create an elevated line. The roof form, fascia profile, finish, and color develop an ever-evolving composition. No two vantage points result

40

in the same presentation. Conceptually, BIGHORN’s Clubhouse is as ambitious as BIGHORN the community.” Kathy Blackbird and Bob Call, who have been BIGHORN Member’s since 2005, know BIGHORN and innately understand how to create that balance of elegance, comfort and fun that BIGHORN Members have come to expect in all of the Club’s amenities. Their sophisticated take on desert contemporary styling, which blends natural organic elements and clean lines with rich woods and materials, metallic accents, uniquely textured walls, sculptural lighting, and highlights of dramatic color, is so prevalent throughout the the new Clubhouse and taken to a new level. Unique faux finishes created exclusively for BIGHORN, on walls and ceilings in various areas will complement the natural

and high-gloss wood finishes as well as the Clubhouse’s signature stone. New event facilities, both indoor and outdoor, will be the venues for the Club’s 100-plus in-season events as well as accommodating an active Memberships’ private parties. Fifty-five televisions means that entertainment is accessible throughout all Member gathering areas. But the crown jewel of the Clubhouse’s features just might be a dazzling 16-foot, cascading, hand-blown glass chandelier in the center of the main stairwell that is truly an exquisite sculpture of light. Whether ascending the stairs to The Pour House or descending the stairs to the Hub, your walk around the lights will bedazzle you. More than a Clubhouse, BIGHORN’s new social focal point offers an exclusive lifestyle opportunity to a fortunate, very few. Four completely unique, luxurious residences, ranging in area from approximately 5,200 sf to 6,800 sf, on the top floor of the Clubhouse accessible to the legendary BIGHORN quality and service by a one-floor, private elevator ride. The Penthouse owners “club” is already even more exclusive because only three remain available. Just an indication of the desirability of the one-of-a-kind nature of the unmatched setting, finishes, design, views, and access to immediate BIGHORN concierge service.

recognition and innumerable awards. The supreme advantage of these private penthouses, besides an exquisite living environment? “Almost anything a Penthouse owner could want can be realized by a call to the Concierge. This is the ultimate in concierge living,” Cardinalli says. Spacious luxury, comfortable environments, and beautiful views that open to awe-inspiring surroundings define every floor of the new Clubhouse. As Hubbard envisions BIGHORN’s latest innovation, “We’ve walked through the threshold of the future and are setting a new standard in the Clubhouse world. I look forward to seeing BIGHORN continue to set the standard for the finest Clubhouses of our time.”

The Penthouse floorplans were conceived by world-renowned designer Guy Dreier, whose contemporary home concepts have graced the covers of Architectural Digest and Robb Report. His imaginative designs have received international

Balance Makes Perfect

Family means everything to Michelle and Bob Bessette – especially when it comes to the time they spend together at BIGHORN. That’s where “we can really connect, truly enjoy one another’s company, and take time to focus on each other,” shares Michelle. Even among busy families, few could keep up with the intensely eventful schedule the Bessette family maintains. With kids in tow – Madison, age 14; Jackson, age 12; Sophie, age 9; and Lexi, age 5 – they masterfully juggle a wide array of athletic activities, competitive dance, music, and, of course, school obligations, on a daily basis. All the while, both parents continue to be accomplished entrepreneurs, philanthropists, and volunteers. As Michelle says, “It’s all about healthy balance, but it takes a lot of work and organization to help your kids excel in the things they are passionate about.” The couple met at an Edmonton Oilers hockey game through mutual friends and then again at a birthday party – their own! They both share a January 10th birthday and their friends just happened to have them celebrating separately at the same restaurant. After a yearlong courtship, they married in 2001 and have been together since. Birthdays are a true celebration now. Michelle and Bob were both born and raised in Edmonton. In 1996, Michelle opened her own clothing store called Who Cares Wear. Over the past two decades, she has grown the business to encompass three regional locations that are considered must-shop retail destinations for the fashion-minded. With boutiques in downtown Edmonton, South Edmonton, and St. Albert, Michelle has carefully crafted a knockout brand that hosts 70 top designers including Michael Kors, Nicole Miller, Ted Baker, Stuart Weitzman, James Perse, Theory, Smythe and Vince to name a few. Incorporating a dash of decadence with a delightful

atmosphere, the stores maintain a perfect blend between couture and accessibility while flaunting designs that would be difficult to find anywhere else in the city. “I care a great deal about the women who shop at my stores; I want them to look and feel their best, and I want to bring the best that the fashion world has to offer,” shares Michelle. Having expanded into personal styling, home décor, and her two additional locations, Michelle loves the combination of buying for the stores, following fashion trends, working alongside with her outstanding management team, and nurturing her family of six. Michelle explains, “It’s vitally important that I employ the best possible staff so I have the opportunity to be very active in the kids’ lives because they are my priority.” While Michelle was establishing her fashion empire, her husband Bob was launching his career as an Investment Advisor at RBC Dominion Securities after completing his Business degree at the University of Alberta. “1997 was an amazing time to start a Wealth Management business in Edmonton, Alberta, due to the strength of the oil and gas sector. It is an incredible city in which to raise a family, and it has a business community that is comprised of world-class entrepreneurs, many of whom are Members at BIGHORN,” shares Bob. His client list began to take shape along with his impressive reputation. When several successful families sought his help in managing their wealth, he founded Bessette Wealth Management – RBC Dominion Securities in 2004. “I was inspired by these incredible families who had founded prominent businesses and wanted to build a multi-generational plan,” he says. “It was an exciting opportunity then and it continues to be what motivates me today: looking to the future, developing a long-term strategy for security, and creating governance to ensure our clients’ wealth is there for many generations to come.”

43

Managing the portfolios of 200 families within North America, Bessette Wealth Management‘s primary goal is growing capital for clients in a low-risk manner. As a member of The Royal Bank, the organization is able to deliver the feel of a personalized boutique firm while leveraging the resources and strength of Canada’s largest bank. The result is the management of wealth in excess of $2.5 billion for a select

group of private clients, and institutional investors. “I love what I do,” adds Bob. “I am very fortunate to be involved with these families.” Michelle and Bob are extremely active with a number of Edmonton philanthropic organizations, charities, and initiatives. Bob is the Chair of the University Hospital Foundation where he has been a Board member since 2008. He is also a board member of the Edmonton Opera and sits on the Edmonton Mayor’s Business Advisory Council. Michelle has fundraised for multiple renovations at the kids’ schools, is involved with the Healthy Hunger school lunch program and is a supporter of many local charities through her business.

“Being at BIGHORN is all about reconnecting as a family. We love playing games, swimming, and spending time together,” shares the couple.

46

So when the family has an opportunity to get away from everyday life, they jump on a WestJet direct flight to Palm Springs and take off for the family’s Canyons home at BIGHORN. “Junior Golf Director Bill Madonna is practically waiting in our driveway as we arrive from the airport, ready to cart the kids off to golf lessons and activities,” beams Michelle. “Bill is a huge reason why we are here; he is amazing with our kids,” adds Bob. “Here at BIGHORN, you experience the Club’s comfortable, friendly atmosphere from the moment you drive in. As a family, we can’t get enough of it! Once Michelle found the perfect villa, we were totally invested in enjoying every moment here. Within 18 months, we moved up to the home we have now, knowing that we wanted more room for family and friends to come visit us and experience BIGHORN. Now we are ready to have a bit of fun renovating the home. If the girls had their way, we might have to add a dance studio where they can practice.” “The lifestyle at BIGHORN is really easy,” adds Michelle. “The kids and I are taking golf lessons with Bill and tennis lessons with Frank Fanning. As a couple, we can now play golf together, hike on one of the multiple hiking trails, bike ride, and see friends socially. Both sets of grandparents visit us here in the desert and we have other close family in the desert as well, so the kids get to spend even more time with our extended family.”

“Our home offers some really amazing views of the Canyons 12th fairway and the Santa Rosa Mountains, so we spend a lot of time poolside watching the kids swim and bathing in the sun. Plus the lot is large enough so we can expand and build on additional rooms. After all, we are planning to be here for a long time,” adds Bob. The family also loves the Canyons Steak House, with each family member selecting their favorite meals from among the wide array of dishes and specials. “We enjoy the experience of going out somewhere special where we can still be a family, make it a date night, or entertain family and friends – and we love that we can drive there by golf cart,” smiles Michelle. “I am looking forward to spending time in the new Clubhouse,” shares Bob. “The environment has such a great camaraderie, whether it is playing cards, hosting a breakfast meeting, or just having one of Bobby’s margaritas – and the experience we will be getting in November will be tenfold. Talk about being forward-thinking and setting the club up for a longterm investment. The new Clubhouse is a brilliant move.” “Plus it’s easy to plug-in or unplug from business at BIGHORN,” adds Bob. “You can fully ramp up and have a few business meetings or you can completely relax and just be a Dad – it is the perfect mix.” 47

Madison, age 14 As a competitive dancer, honors student, tennis player, and golfer, Madison takes her many endeavors in stride. A confident and responsible young teen, Madison competes in the ballet, jazz, and theatre program styles with Lucky’s Dance Group in Edmonton, traveling often to competitions. As a ninth grader, she is a focussed student who earns amazing marks; she is already considering application requirements for various universities and can’t wait to work hard in high school to set her up for an exhilarating university experience – the future is bright for this girl!

48

At BIGHORN, she loves hanging out with her family, the friends she has made there, and with Junior Golf Director Bill Madonna. “Sometimes when no one is using the aerobics studio at the Spa, my friend McKenna and I can try out some new dance moves” including a piece that was choreographed to Beauty and the Beast. “The nights are so warm here (in comparison to the chilly Canadian winters) that we all like to stay up late and swim in the pool. I could swim all day here.”

Jackson, age 12 A very active pre-teen, Jackson plays lacrosse, soccer (as a right mid-field player), hockey, basketball, volleyball, and golf! Whew! Going into middle school, Jackson is ready for the upper-level competitive environment. Over the past four years at BIGHORN, he has improved his golf swing through the Junior Golf program. “I love Bill, he’s so funny,” Jackson says. And Bill loves hanging out with the Bessette kids. “Jackson holds the record for the longest putt on our junior putting green,” shares Bill. “In fact, Jackson has earned so many BIGHORN Bucks that at one point I had to ask him for a $7,000 loan so I could get ready for a big holiday weekend! Smart like his dad, he arranged for a small interest loan.” Jackson is the king of the bungee jump at BIGHORN’s Family Fun Day activities. “I love coming to BIGHORN family events. We have a blast! And I really like the friends that we have made here. It’s a cool place to be.” Jackson is inspired by many influential athletes, but “I really admire my dad and would like to work with him one day at Bessette Wealth Management because it’s really cool.” Dad Bob smiles as he hears this and compliments his son by describing Jackson as “a leader among his peers and a very considerate young man whose edges have been softened by the great women surrounding him.”

49

Sophie, age 9 Considered the most creative and the official baker of the family, Sophie loves to create her own at-home version of Cupcake Wars! Grandma Pat Bessette is the influencer who has entrusted her with all of the family cookie, doughnut, and cupcake recipes. Her baking may have even influenced her favorite classes at school: art, music, and science. Sophie also dances competitively in jazz, trio, hip hop, and acrobatic dance. This ambitious little dancer eagerly attends six different classes every week! In addition to her love for playing golf and soccer, Sophie plays the piano and guitar. Her favorite songs to play include “I’m a Lost Boy” and “True Colors.” Her most remarkable golf move? A hole-in-one chip on the Junior Golf putting green. “She’s a natural,” grins Bill.

50

Lexi, age 5 Mom and Dad describe Lexi as an energetic cutie pie who is athletic and confident and who’s “definitely got us wrapped around her little finger.” That may well be the case as the Monopoly money from a rousing game that wrapped up during our interview was later found in her pocket in a thick wad with a rubber band. A girl’s gotta seize opportunities as she sees them! This youngest child isn’t about to let the age difference hold her back. Lexi loves the movie Moana and is happy to tell you all about the colorful characters who make appearances throughout this Maui-based tale of one girl’s bravery and self-discovery. Her favorite moment is when Moana sings and the monster turns into the beautiful woman. She also loves swimming, tennis, and hunting for her lion’s share of eggs on a sunny BIGHORN Easter morning.

BIGHORN’s highly anticipated events transform the campus overnight into a wonderland of adventures that they regale to their friends. Family Fun Days, Splash Bash, Snow Day, Hawaiian Luau – all filled with interactive games, dance contests, and FUN! “I love touring guests on the property,” Grenier says. “They begin with certain expectations and within minutes they’re astonished by the incredibly friendly lifestyle and start imagining themselves here, often running into people they know from hometowns or their work environment. Nearly 90% of new Members already know someone at BIGHORN, so our current Members love the community and continuously share their experiences with family and friends.” “BIGHORN’s vision is a Club and Community that is continually improving and renewing, responding to the current lifestyle needs of today’s family,” affirms BIGHORN Vice President of Development, Carl Cardinalli. “The vision is realized in continually creating new amenities and improving existing amenities. It’s imperative to always be relevant to today’s lifestyle.” As a result, BIGHORN’s reputation and appeal as one of the world’s premier Clubs continues to grow. alter or change it over the years, who the previous owners were – all of these things are already a part of the knowledge base of BIGHORN Properties. Typically, this is all firsthand knowledge. This is so valuable in representing a property for sale because the Associates are already invested in it. To be successful to accomplish the sale – not once, but hundreds and thousands of times over a long period of time you have to stay focused and continually refresh your knowledge of your product and customer and how and why the two should come together. BIGHORN Properties is all about knowledge and all about putting the two together. No one knows BIGHORN better or can talk about its wonders and lifestyle better than a BIGHORN Properties Sales Associate.

When you’re a buyer, what is it you’re interested in and when is it that you have confidence and trust in the salesperson with whom you’re working? Isn’t it always with someone who has a real understanding of what you’re interested in and expresses it well with details and looks at the product with your interests in mind? Of course. In the case of BIGHORN, because the Sales Associates know BIGHORN in depth, how it functions, who does what and all that it has to offer, they will know how BIGHORN fits the lifestyle of any potential BIGHORN owner and Member. There is no other realtor that knows BIGHORN’s streets, where all of the Club, Management, HOA offices are or that knows the gate officers by name. Who else knows the names of all of the terrific people who work at BIGHORN – both front of house and back of house? Who else has access to all of management and the “head guy”. Who else can introduce a potential BIGHORN owner to the individuals at the Spa & Salon or Golf Shop or at the Concierge Desk or to other Members enjoying their day at the Club, having a coffee at the Marketplace, eating at The Pour House, or just having enjoyed a massage or game of Pickleball. Only BIGHORN Properties has this access and more importantly only BIGHORN Properties can do this because it is onsite, does nothing else and cares about BIGHORN.

When you think about it, it makes perfect sense. A Sales Associate 99% of the time has sold the home to the BIGHORN owner who is now trying to sell that home. So there is a longstanding relationship. The Associate very likely introduced that selling owner not only to BIGHORN, but to that owner’s BIGHORN friends and through the years they have acknowledged important life moments together – birthdays, weddings, graduations, Women’s Member/ Member Championship – enjoying the occasional lunch and dinner just to “catch up”. It’s a relationship, a friendship. So to the Sales Associate who is now engaged in selling the home, the representation is important because the relationship with BIGHORN owners is important. Any new, potential BIGHORN owner and Member is looked at the same way by the Sales Associates. “This person, this family, hopefully will be longtime Members of BIGHORN enjoying the lifestyle and enriching their lives.” BIGHORN Properties embraces this role. It has no other goal than for BIGHORN to thrive. Always Writing a New Chapter Welcome to the Gershowitz’s Canyons home at BIGHORN. The couple’s entry courtyard with fireside lounge transports all who enter to Italy. They found the centerpiece antique well buried in a Los Angeles antiques store. “It’s quite a historical piece. It’s over 300 years old and is fully functioning,” Hal says. A Deborah Butterfield horse stands nearby, enjoying the tranquil ambiance.

Author, business professionals, and philanthropists: Is there anything that Diane and Hal Gershowitz can’t do? This dynamic duo has been married for 32 years, after being introduced by Diane’s cousin and BIGHORN Members, Susan and Stephen Porter. Their first date in 1983 led to a whirlwind courtship, and within 20 months they were married and in the process of moving Diane from Milwaukee to Chicago. “He Shanghaied me,” she adds with a laugh. Hal and Diane met in their mid-40s and quickly blended a beautiful family comprised of Diane’s three children – Larry, Dan, and Jill and Hal’s son, Michael, and daughter, Amy, as well as nine grandchildren.

Diane grew up in Ripon, Wisconsin, where her parents founded The Marcus Corporation in 1935 with just a single theater. Diane and her brother grew up watching the very best in cinema, her favorites being Breakfast at Tiffany’s and African Queen. “Growing up, my brother and I practically lived in the theater watching all of the amazing classics and eating lots of popcorn,” shares Diane. “We dreamed in adventures, so it’s not surprising that luxury entertainment became our future!” Today, The Marcus Corporation is the fourth largest movie theatre exhibitor in the United States and a leader in the lodging and entertainment industry.

Hal, who had enjoyed a successful career in marketing, advertising, and association management in Washington, D.C., had moved to Chicago at age 34 to join the senior management team at Waste Management Inc. shortly after the newly formed company went public. By the time Hal retired 20 years later, Waste Management had grown into an international environmental management company operating throughout North and South America, Europe, and the Middle East.

The company expanded into drive-in movie theatres in 1949, then into Bob’s Big Boy in 1958 where Diane used to hostess before attending the University of Wisconsin. “When Marcus purchased the Pfister Hotel in 1962, getting into the lodging business, it was an incredibly large remodeling project. I was a mother of three, and I would spend my days inventorying all the rooms.” The company went public in 1972, and Diane was asked to join the Board of Directors on which she serves to this day.

When it’s time to relax, Hal and Diane might be found in their gorgeous outdoor living room or on the poolside entertainment patio, admiring the Santa Rosa Mountains and Canyons 5th fairway. With a spa flowing into the pool combined with elevated fire pit lounge, barbecue center, multiple living and dining areas, fireplace, and television, who needs indoor living? Below right and left: “We love the friends we have met at BIGHORN; they mean the world to us,” shares the couple.” Below middle: Diane and Hal with their close friend, Major League Baseball Commissioner, Bud Selig.

Marc’s Big Boy, from the original Milwaukee location, welcomes moviegoers into their private theatre.

“I love the entertainment business!” she smiles. “My brother has been involved since his 20s, as have his sons. It’s wonderful to experience three generations of family so invested in a thriving company. I am continuously amazed to see what is new in the entertainment lifestyle and all that we are involved in now. Our parents would be thrilled and incredibly happy that their children and grandchildren have developed a marvelous team to lead the company.” In 1993, The Marcus Corporation moved to the New York Stock Exchange where it now showcases 895 screens at 69 locations in eight states. Numerous Marcus Hotels and restaurants including Reel Sizzle, Miller Time Pub, ChopHouse, Madison Street Grill, and Safehouse are run by the corporation. Even Milwaukee’s Marcus Performing Arts Center bears the family name. Hal grew up in inner-city Washington, D.C., where his parents owned a small corner grocery store. A graduate of the University of Maryland with a degree in Business and Public Administration, Hal started out as an account executive in marketing research for a small boutique marketing research firm and was soon recruited by a major Washington advertising agency to become its Vice President of Marketing. In 1964, Hal went into business with another advertising executive, Larry Hogan. Four years later, the two men became involved in politics and scored the biggest Congressional upset in the United States by electing his partner (a Republican) to congress in the most solidly Democratic congressional district in the United States (Maryland’s 5th congressional district). Today, his former partner’s son is the current Governor of Maryland.

In 1969, Hal founded the National Capital Tay-Sachs Foundation after his son Steven was diagnosed with this very rare and uniformly fatal disease. Hal led the effort to establish, at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, the first mass genetic-screening program for Tay-Sachs Disease, which has served as a model throughout the western world and has all but eliminated the incidence of children born with this tragic disease. “It’s probably the single most important thing I have done with my life,” says Hal. In Chicago, Hal served as Corporate Senior Vice President of Waste Management Inc. “The Waste Management model was pretty simple. It was a service virtually everyone needed, there were few barriers to entry, and the cost of start-up was manageable. We were able to pursue this model with other businesses that we later developed subsequent to my retirement from Waste Management.” In 1987, Hal became the Chairman of New Century Information Services, a software company that provided management service to the retail apparel industry. Hal and Diane later founded New Century Ventures, which developed a Midwest chain of Blockbuster Video stores that they sold to Viacom in 1994. 61

Most recently the couple has become partners in an exciting new venture called Workuity. This collaborative workplace environment combines business services, conference rooms, and office and work space that freelancers, entrepreneurs, and other businesses can lease for a day, week, or month-to-month. Workuity has been described as a place where young entrepreneurs and seasoned business professionals alike can graduate from Starbucks to a more appealing “Google-style” work environment. This progressive approach is especially popular with millennials. The creative concept encourages young business men and women to work interactively with other Workuity-based entrepreneurs as they build their own businesses. Complete with lounge and shared work space, larger private multi-person modules, a high-tech theatre and conference rooms, and contiguous to cafés and outside patios, the high-energy workspace filled up fast. The initial Workuity opened in Phoenix in April, and the company has identified several additional locations they believe are equally attractive. Remembering Our Family’s History In 1988, Bantam published Hal’s first novel, Remember This Dream, which focuses on the upheaval of Polish Jews when sisters Anna and Dvoyra are separated upon Anna’s immigration to America. While the story is fiction, much of it is based on the history of Hal’s mother’s family. Anna and her daughters are impoverished refugees, while Dvoyra and Hal and Diane work together in their beautiful library at BIGHORN, where Diane helps with the research for Hal’s books. Here, they bounce ideas off one another and motivate each other’s efforts.

her family struggle to survive the horrors of anti-Semitism and war. The story is rich in history and reality, encompassing war and its impact on the novel’s characters. The book’s opening scene describes the moment Anna and her three daughters leave their tiny Polish home in a horse-drawn wagon and the children’s grandfather runs alongside crying, “Remember me! Remember me!” Hal chose this scene to begin the book because it corresponds exactly to what his elderly aunts remembered about their departure from the old country when they were young girls. This poignant passage was captured in bronze when Diane commissioned artist Phillip Ratner to depict the scene. She had Ratner, who was also a boyhood friend of Hal’s, bring it to his 50th birthday party. “To see a poignant piece of my family’s history memorialized this way was overwhelming, especially when it was made possible by two people I love so much,” shares Hal. Hal’s first historical novel, based on real-life events, was also named as a Bestseller by the Chicago Tribune, and it won the 1989 Friends of Literature Award for fiction.

Above: Diane’s passion for education has led her to chairing College of the Desert’s “Steppin Out for COD” five times, which has raised funds for student scholarships awarded to these talented women pictured with her on the top right. Bottom left: Hal championed a successful program this past season for the Barbara Sinatra Center for Abused Children with special guest 20-time Olympian Michael Phelps, also pictured here with their granddaughter Samantha. Below right: The couple introduced Mona Golabek of “Pianist of Willesden Lane,” to the McCallum Theatre; she also performed for school students.

“From the very beginning, I promised myself that if the book ever earned a dime I would donate any royalties I received. As it turns out, the book was published at the time the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., was under construction, so I donated the royalties to the Museum. I feel it’s vitally important to remember our collective history so that the darkest periods won’t be repeated.” Hal was, subsequently, appointed to serve on the Governing Council and Executive Committee of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum by both Presidents George H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton. The museum inspires citizens and leaders worldwide to confront hatred, prevent genocide, and promote human dignity. “I was honored to work alongside Elie Wiesel,” a Nobel Prizewinning advocate for peace. “Having my name among those etched into the cornerstone of the museum is pretty humbling,” Hal says.

Hal’s second novel, Heirs of Eden, and its sequel, The Eden Legacy, tackle conflicts of culture and politics. Two families, one Jewish and the other Palestinian Christian, struggle to rid themselves of century-old bias. The children endure society’s tension while remaining loyal to each other, but historic prejudices and animosities continue to haunt them. The novels remind us that we have the power to challenge those whose handed-down beliefs try to divide us.

“It’s the largest, and best executed project I have ever been involved with, and it has taken me in directions that my immigrant grandparents and their children would have never ever dreamed.” To date, the museum has hosted more than 40 million visitors.

Supporting the Coachella Valley

Hal also served on the national Board of the Anti-Defamation League for many years, and, in 1994, was awarded the League’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

An Honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters was bestowed upon Hal by the Catholic Theological Union (CTU), the largest Catholic graduate school in theology in North America, for his community activism including advocacy for the Catholic-Jewish dialogue in Chicago. His service on the National Advisory Board of the Bernardin Center at CTU led to spearheading the campaign to endow the Directorship of the Catholic-Jewish Studies Program at CTU.

A creative essayist who is strongly committed to community, Hal has also served as President of Chicago’s Goodman Theater and currently serves as Vice Chair of our own McCallum Theatre as well as Vice President and Treasurer of the Barbara Sinatra Center for Abused Children.

The elegant Gershowitz living room is a blend of romantic furnishings, beautiful antiques, and an eclectic art collection, from Botero to a Rodin brought from Paris. Over the antique fireplace, a compelling three-dimensional, multi-media work by artist Cathy Pitts was commissioned as an inspired replica of a beloved family heirloom Diane’s family sold: Picasso’s original “Musketeer with a Pipe”. A clay bowl on the coffee table (encased in plexiglass) was gifted by a renowned Palestinian antiquities authority who Hal met in Bethlehem while researching his second historical novel. It dates back over 3,500 years to the time of Abraham.

64

Diane has also had a long-standing commitment to both local and national community service. She served on the Women’s Board of the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago and chaired Vernissage, the opening night of Chicago’s famed Art Expo. She also serves on the Annenberg Theatre Council and has chaired five College of the Desert Stepping Out events along with this past season’s BIGHORN BAM Game Day for Life. “People are always happy to be going to the theatre. It’s culturally enriching to feed one’s soul,” she adds. “I serve on the Board of the College of the Desert (COD) Foundation because it educates the lifeblood of our community, helping students who might otherwise have no access to higher education,” she explains. COD offers Associate Degree Programs and over 100 vocational Certificate Programs in a wide variety of disciplines that helps transform the Coachella Valley workplace. “I am especially impressed by the Edge Program,” she says, referring to a three-week comprehensive course that assists students by offering math review sessions, English classes, and the tools necessary to excel in college. “I also love the Early Childhood Development Center, where students who take six credit hours or more can take their children for day care while they attend school,” she beams. At the same time, the center offers state-of-the-art training for COD students majoring in early childhood development. COD Foundation Executive Director Peter Sturgeon praises Diane, “Rarely does someone come along who is a ‘tipping point’ person for an organization – one who not only has an extraordinary knack for making friends but also has such passion and commitment that those friends become eager

to follow her. Diane is that person. COD and our 15,000 students are profoundly bettered by Diane’s devotion.” Loving the Desert Diane and Hal have been Members for over a decade. In fact, they were at another club when they made the decision to build their dream home. They fell in love with a homesite above the Canyons 5th fairway with majestic Santa Rosa Mountain views. So the pair orchestrated a talented team, hiring their favorite designer, Dale Carol Anderson from Chicago, and architects Mark Trudeau, also from Chicago, and Lynn Scott, who lived and worked in Palm Desert at the time. For Diane, the home’s design started with the kitchen. Inspired by a visit to a DeGiulio showroom where she saw a La Cornue range and oven in a contemporary kitchen, she saw the possibilities of blending sophisticated modern style with the elements of beautiful French stone. Voila! Her kitchen is now a masterpiece of stainless steel and romance that influences the comfortable design and flow of the entire home. “Moving to BIGHORN has been one of our best decisions,” says Diane. “The entire community is filled with incredibly talented people, and we have made friends here with whom we will be connected forever. Our lives have been fully enriched by our experiences. And having the opportunity to contribute to the well-being of the Coachella Valley is an added bonus.” “We are looking forward to working on the next chapter of our lives here,” adds Hal.

Diane and Hal love the view of the Santa Rosa Mountains and Canyons’ 5th hole from their exquisitely designed home.

Top 100 Instructor

Photography by Mark Davidson BIGHORN’s Director of Golf Instruction, Dale Abraham, has been named to GOLF Magazine’s Top 100 Teachers list for 2017-2018. Abraham is one of 15 new members on the elite list this year. Since its inception in 1991, the biennial ranking has become the industry standard for teaching excellence. Candidates are judged on their willingness to give back to the game along with their teaching expertise through years of teaching the game, impact on the instruction community, teaching-related activities, teaching awards, students’ portfolios and accomplishments, and peer ratings. “It is a great honor to be named as one of the Top 100 Teachers in America,” says Abraham, who has been Director of Golf Instruction at BIGHORN for over two years. “This award is one of the golf industry’s most prestigious awards, and to be selected as one of the best out of 25,000+ teachers is truly a privilege.” Abraham has been teaching golf full-time for more than 20 years and has taught more than 35,000 individual lessons and clinics. He has been honored with numerous awards including twice being named the PGA Section Teacher of the Year, Golf Digest Top Teacher in the state of California, and the Southern California PGA Inland Empire Chapter Teacher of the Year. “Since Dale was hired, our BIGHORN Members have recognized Dale as an exceptional instructor. We are thrilled that he is also being recognized by GOLF Magazine and was chosen to be on this exclusive list of the top golf teachers in the country,” says BIGHORN Chairman R.D. Hubbard. BIGHORN features two championship courses; the Arthur Hills-designed Mountains and the Tom Faziodesigned Canyons course. The courses have been the site for such notable events as The Skins Game, Battle at BIGHORN, LPGA’s Samsung World Championships, and the U.S. Senior Match Play Challenge. Treasure Hunter

By Lisa Marie Hart Photography by Mark Davidson

Terry Weiner, CEO of Leeds & Son Fine Jewelers, loves coming home to BIGHORN after his international shopping trips. “It’s my favorite place to be – great friends, great food and fabulous amenities – I’m a lucky man!” shares Terry.

68

From treasure hunting for exquisite jewels across the globe to hanging out in The Pour House after a round of golf on the Mountains course, Terry Weiner enjoys connecting with the people he meets in his travels. Relationships have been at the heart of the family jewelry business his parents started in 1947, and joining a community built on meaningful personal interactions was one of his reasons for moving to BIGHORN five years ago. “BIGHORN is the perfect place to practice the saying, ‘Try to be more interested than interesting,’” Terry explains. “Everyone here has a story, and they are all fascinating.” Terry comes from a family who both cultivated and enjoyed hearing fascinating stories. When his parents Edward and Eleanore Weiner opened Leeds & Son 70 years ago in Indio, they were creating more than a small town jewelry shop; they had embarked on a legacy. Few could have imagined their budding bridal jewelry and wedding band business would turn into an internationally recognized shopping destination for fine jewels and heirloom watches. Terry and his sister, Riki Stein, joined their parents in the business in the late 1970s and were later followed by Terry’s nephew, Brett, and his wife, Christine. Looking back on decades of stories shared with generations of clients, Terry credits his parents for having the vision of how the area would grow over the next seven decades into an esteemed center for golf, fashion, and social events known worldwide. He inherited that same gift of vision from his parents, and has been proud to be a part of a business that has served and evolved with the community.

Terry is proud of the world-renowned team assembled at Leeds & Son Fine Jewelers. Stop by their El Paseo location or the new Jewel Box located at BIGHORN’s new Clubhouse to experience their first-class service and selection in person.

Terry is CEO of Leeds & Son Fine Jewelers on El Paseo in Palm Desert, Baron & Leeds Fine Jewelers (with three locations in Hawaii), and Rolex Boutique at South Coast Plaza. He is also an Ambassador of the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie for the high art of watchmaking. As of this fall, he is also the name and face behind BIGHORN’s new Golf Shop’s glittering Jewel Box. Housed in a striking oval-shaped glass cylinder, this is where luxury pro shop meets Madison Avenue chic. Artfully integrated, the Jewel Box is a stunning yet serene space in which Members can browse, shop, and dream among Terry’s hand-picked selection of exceptional jewelry and extraordinary timepieces. “I love to travel and find the rare and unusual – and I can think of no better place to showcase these treasures than BIGHORN,” says Terry, whose role in the family business has developed into that of a masterful “treasure hunter.” He values the role he has in traversing the globe to find and source extraordinary products, bringing back only the best of the best to share with his discriminating clients, who are well-traveled themselves. “The BIGHORN Member expects and understands quality, and is not satisfied with the ordinary,” surmises Terry. And neither is he. Those who know him often remark on his innate ability to exceed the highest standards of professionalism while being friendly and approachable. He establishes genuine personal connections with every single client, whether encountering them for the first time or greeting them again after many years of friendship. It’s one of the reasons the business enjoys such a loyal customer base. He and his talented team also enjoy educating clients about jewelry, gemstones, metals, settings, watches, and the latest styles,

including how to wear them. The opportunity to offer a specialized shop in his home Club means everything to him. In effect, he is bringing his parents’ mission full circle. Continuing the Legacy The store name “Leeds” was created by combining the first two letters of his parents’ names: Eleanore and Edward. Founded by one family to serve many local families, their business quickly became a beloved establishment in the valley. High-quality products, sincere love of community, and a passion for elegance set them apart, spearheaded by a personal touch and outstanding service at every turn. “Leeds and Son has always been a family business,” Terry explains. “My parents opened their store in the Coachella Valley in 1947, and, in our 70-year history, there has always been a family member in the store. With the opening of the Jewel Box, Riki and Brett have become more engaged with our BIGHORN Members, offering me the privilege to hunt the world for the treasures we offer.” Those treasures reflect some of the same names clients have loved for years at the Leeds store on El Paseo. In fact, Leeds & Son is Coachella Valley’s only Official Jeweler for Rolex, Patek Philippe, Chanel, Baume & Mercier, and other fine and certified pre-owned watches. They offer jewelry from internationally recognized name brands and also work direct with Italian designers for more unique and one-of-akind creations. Additionally, Leeds & Son specializes in GIA-certified diamonds and can source every size, quality, and shape. On site, a state-of-the-art watch service department is staffed by industry-trained professionals using only manufacturer-approved parts and testing equipment. A master goldsmith attends to jewelry repair and custom creations. The legacy that began when Ed and Eleanore Weiner believed in the community and planted both familial and business roots here continues today through Terry, Riki, Brett, Christine, and other family team members who share in the joy of expressing the caring spirit behind the brand. Leeds & Son Fine Jewelers hosts the Coachella Valley’s most rare and unusual collection of diamonds, gemstones, and watches.

70

The family-owned business celebrated its Platinum Jubilee in 2017 and looks forward to a sparkling future as the Coachella Valley continues to thrive as a global destination for luxury and style. People Comes First Terry emphasizes that everyone who is part of their family business believes that integrity is paramount. Knowing that their friends and neighbors rely on their knowledge and high standards, they have devoted themselves to providing time-trusted service while placing utmost importance on offering only the finest colors, clarities, and quality in every piece. “Leeds and Son’s philosophy is simple: At every price category, source the best quality,” Terry shares. “Our goal is to save our customers both time and money with our incredible sourcing abilities. Whether you’re looking for a million-dollar diamond or cufflinks for $300, we want to be your jeweler.” For Terry, a jeweler is an essential trusted resource who helps his or her clients express love, mark special occasions, and reward themselves for achievement. “Many of our team members and customers have been with us through our generations and that makes them a part of our family, too,” he says. “Now in our 70th year, we’re approaching our fourth generation of customers. We’ve had the honor of sharing countless treasured moments with our extended families including weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, and professional milestones.” That commitment to consistency and dedication to a personal experience have made them the area’s Most Trusted Jewelers. To be able to step into their spectacular boutique anytime over the last 7 decades and know you will always be warmly greeted by a family member is what has made the business a long-standing local asset. Hiking Mountainous Treasures During Terry’s down time he loves to hike, but for two decades his passion was climbing at a world-class level. “I started serious mountaineering when I was 20 and retired from the sport in my 40s when my daughter, Alex, was born,” he recalls. “I always loved the outdoors, and schools like Outward Bound provided expert training for the wilderness. I honed my rock skills at Joshua Tree National Monument. Later, my interest drew me to technical ice climbing and expedition climbing.”

The dynamic brother-sister duo, Terry with his beloved sister, Riki Stein. “I am so lucky to partner with my sister and very best friend – she’s my rock and I love and admire her dearly,” shares Terry.

“Climbing in Nepal and Peru along the Bolivian border was extremely powerful for me. The rich heritage of the Andes was fascinating, especially the treks into the mountains, experiencing the culture, and finally standing on top of a major summit. It’s exhilarating! “My first ‘treasure hunt’ happened in Kathmandu, Nepal. After a climbing expedition in the Khumbu region, I became enamored with a very rare bead that the Tibetan’s call a XI stone. It took me four years of searching to find one, which I eventually purchased from a former bodyguard of the Dalai Lama. These are very rare stones that are thought to bring good luck, spiritual enlightenment, and health. There is quite a mystery around their origins, and they are now considered priceless. I wear mine every day and, so far, its powers have worked very well.” Life and Jewelry at BIGHORN Terry joined BIGHORN about five years ago. “I grew up in the desert and knew that one day I would join this club and live here,” he reveals. “There never was a second choice for me. BIGHORN was my dream and my reward for 40 years of hard work. I love every day that I am home.” For Terry, “home” meant a Club that offers a unique environment with a world-class experience. When home, Terry catches his breath while taking in a Tennis Drill ‘n Play, swimming laps at the Spa & Wellness Center, or playing golf and striving to use the same ball for an entire round. “I love to meet new Members,” adds Terry. “The Membership is a treasure at this Club, and the staff is definitely the lifeblood. It’s a remarkable place.”

“The Jewel Box is as unique as the BIGHORN Membership,” says Terry, adding that his fellow Members are his inspiration behind the one-of-a-kind boutique. “I have already received a great deal of positive feedback. We present extraordinary jewels and timepieces as well as wearable, everyday wardrobe pieces. Our focus is on quality and originality.” Originality for Terry always implies a certain artfulness. “I love art. Jewelry and timepieces are one of the highest forms of art,” he notes. “True fine jewelry incorporates the arts of design, goldsmithing, diamond setting, gem sourcing, enameling, polishing, and more. All of these by themselves are art forms.” BIGHORN Members’ understanding and appreciation for fine art extends to the jewelry they wear. Whether purely sentimental or designed to make a fabulous statement, any piece can become artful in its presentation. “Jewelry is like art. You can mix metals. You can mix sentimental pieces with statement pieces. Wear whatever brings you pleasure.” As long as you opt for quality over quantity, Terry adds. For Terry personally, he has long held an affinity for distinctive mechanical watches. “High-end watchmaking is on the same level as fine automobile manufacturing or fine art,” Terry explains. “You have to understand the love that goes into individual timepieces that are sometimes one to two years in production.”

Below left: “I love celebrating special moments with my amazing daughter, Alex. She means the world to me,” shares Terry. Below right: Climbing the greatest peaks in the world began early in Terry’s life.

It takes endless hours and extreme devotion to curate an international jewelry collection the likes of which fill the glittering cases at Leeds & Son and BIGHORN’s Jewel Box. Any given day for Terry might begin before sunrise, when, for example, an auction in Monaco features a cache of rare watches he knows his clients will be keen to appreciate. He journeys to the Far East in a quest for heavenly pearls then back to Europe to source precious stones and meet with renowned designers. (The vast majority of the jewelry he stocks is made in Italy, as Terry believes Italians are the best craftsmen on Earth.)

To craft a bespoke experience and selection for clients, Terry travels over 200 days a year. In addition to working closely with manufacturers, he attends conferences, watch shows, and factory tours, researching the latest in timepieces to best serve his knowledgeable clients. His “commute” finds him jet-setting frequently between Palm Desert, Laguna Beach, Hawaii, and Italy. “I love to travel to these destinations, but my house at BIGHORN truly feels like a home,” he says. “When I come back after an extended trip, this place wraps its walls around me like a warm blanket. Every morning, I open the window shades and marvel at the beauty outside. BIGHORN reminds me that I am the luckiest man alive.”

Making Stars

By Lisa Marie Hart Photography by Mark Davidson

Sandy Wernick and his beautiful wife, Barbara, met in a Bronx bowling alley when they were in their late teens. Sandy asked Barbara’s friend if she would go out with him and was told Barbara would consider it. He found the nerve to call her, and soon after they were on a double date, riding the ferry to Staten Island for five cents a piece. Barbara thought he was very romantic and, just a year later, Sandy requested a 3-day pass from the Army so he and Barbara could get married. They moved to Fort Lee, Virginia, until he was honorably discharged. The newlyweds returned to New York City and quickly embarked on a wild ride through the world of entertainment, where Sandy has become a quiet legend among talent managers. Generations of audiences have Sandy to thank for making them laugh, cry, forget their cares, and understand the human condition a bit more than when they entered a theater or sat down to watch television.

It all began when Sandy, future Talent Manager and Producer, ran into the future Movie Producer and Promoter Jerry Weintraub in New York several years after graduating from the same Bronx high school. Sandy was looking for work, and Jerry managed to get him a job in the mailroom at the famed MCA Agency where he too was getting his start. The two worked hard and both became successful agents, along with their colleague Bernie Brillstein. Sandy began representing artists for television and soon developed popular Bing Crosby and Perry Como specials. In 1963, Sandy and Barbara moved to California where their daughter, Michele, and son, Barry, were born. (Both are in the entertainment industry.) In 1975, Sandy and Bernie started The Brillstein Company, now known as Brillstein Entertainment Partners. Over the course of more than 45 star-studded years, they have built one of the largest management companies in the business, representing hundreds of clients.

The Wernicks have lived in their BIGHORN home since 2010. Barbara and famed designer Stephen Rieman blended the couple’s design aesthetic and their love for modernist art. “I loved how unique the ceilings are and wanted to mix them with the gorgeous Edward Dugmore painting I had found in a gallery,” expresses Barbara. Dugmore studied under Clyfford Still, producing large-scale works that combine color and emotion and blending West Coast style with classic New York abstract expressionism. “When I saw ‘1961-D,’ I knew it was perfect for the space and purchased an additional piece ‘Barcelona, 1962’ to hang opposite it.” 78

Above left: Sandy and his son, Barry. Above right: The Wernick’s daughter, Michele, and grandson Sammy, age 11. Sammy produced his own film called “The Eruption” that facilitated his acceptance to the Millikan School for Cinematic Arts. “I love him dearly,” beams Sandy, “but I think it is important for him to find his own way.”

That kind of success takes creativity, focus, and artistic vision. And years of it! In 1975, as one early example, Sandy and his partner Bernie put together a deal for Lorne Michaels to create a late-night comedy and variety show originally called NBC’s Saturday Night offering comedy sketches parodying contemporary culture and politics. Every week, a new host would begin with a prologue and deliver that famed line: “Live from New York, it’s Saturday Night!” Representing Gilda Radner, Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi, and Chevy Chase, Sandy had a huge success on his hands. That same year, Sandy and Bernie packaged The Muppet Show, which branched off into multiple movie deals. The Business of Show Business Since his high-profile beginnings, Sandy’s productions and clients have transformed and shaped the world’s culture. Representing the best in rock and roll, folk performers, and movie and television stars, his company’s client list is a veritable who’s who in Hollywood including Adam Sandler, Brad Pitt, Amy Adams, Courtney Cox, Rob Lowe, Kaley Cuoco, Vin Diesel, Jim Gaffigan, Bill Maher, and many others. “I love my clients. They are all like family and so talented,” shares Sandy. “Adam Sandler is such a great guy. I have the best job in the world!” Staying ahead of the curve, Sandy has continued to reinvent himself through a client list that evolved from classic ’60s musicians and folk singers to actors and performers of every style. His intense loyalty to his clients and his tenacity to produce incredible television led him to packaging stunt performer Evel Knievel, who finished 75 jumps over the course of his career including the

legendary shark jump Sandy produced. He recalls, “Evel kept telling me he wanted to run through a practice before the live event. We all told him it was too dangerous because something could happen and the network would be furious if the live event didn’t happen. Evel was stubborn and shouted, ‘Stay out of my way!’ So we filmed it, just in case. Evel starts the practice jump and misses. It was awful. It was all caught on film: the fire trucks, ambulances, broken bones, and all. So instead of promoting the live event, the network started promoting the jump that never succeeded.” “Negotiating really unique deals is my passion,” shares Sandy. “I like to be the first to break new ground and trail blaze the industry. It’s why I go into work every day.” And Sandy’s negotiating skills are indeed legendary. In 2002, while representing the cast of Friends, he negotiated a contract for each of the stars to earn $1 million per episode! Starting in the days of what we now know and love as Saturday Night Live, comedy specials have been another hallmark in Sandy’s career. He has produced 25 years of Def Comedy Jams and has worked with the likes of Dennis Miller, Dana Carvey, Garry Shandling, and Carol Burnett, among many others. He discovered comedian Adam Sandler at the Improv, recognizing his raw talent. In quick succession, he landed Adam Saturday Night Live, a string of movie hits including Billy Madison (one of Sandy’s personal favorites), Happy Gilmore, The Wedding Singer, Big Daddy, and Mr. Deeds. “Adam has impeccable timing, natural comedic humor, and an honest desire to make everyone laugh,” praises Sandy. 79

Below: “Adam is family to us,” expresses Sandy. “We spend time with his wife and family – he’s incredibly genuine and giving, and life wouldn’t be complete without him.” Below: Sandy received his Hollywood Star on the night of the premiere of Sandy Wexler. “What a great night!” beams Sandy.

In addition to a keen eye for talent, Sandy has a knack for innovative strategies that change the industry, which led him to a four-picture exclusive deal for Adam Sandler with Netflix in 2015. Adam’s first two movies, The Ridiculous 6 and The Do-Over, ranked as the top film releases on the streaming platform. As part of the four-movie deal, Adam recently paid homage to his long-time manager in Sandy Wexler, a story in which he plays a devoted L.A. talent manager. Before it premiered in April 2017, Netflix re-upped its deal with Adam for another four movies. “Adam Sandler is one of the leading comedians in the film world, and his movies have proven to be extremely successful with our subscribers around the world,” stated Netflix’s chief content officer, Ted Sarandos. Since the first movie debuted, Netflix viewers have watched over 500 million hours of Sandler’s three movies.

80

“Just watch, deals like this are the wave of the future,” says Sandy. “Millennials want instantaneous entertainment, and that is why major mergers are happening, so more films are being made.” “I am so lucky to be in a business that I love,” Sandy adds. “I am very proud of our team and humbled by the talent I represent.” Finding BIGHORN After relocating from New York to California, the Wernicks made their home in Malibu throughout most of Sandy’s career. Many adventures and red carpet events have passed since Sandy and Barbara met at a Bronx bowling alley. They have now been married for 55 years.

While at their stunning home along the coast, Sandy dreamed of a desert home. He eventually convinced Barbara to start looking. For years, they explored options at different communities, but nothing seemed to click. Barbara wanted complete privacy, with a view that didn’t encompass other homes, but she also didn’t want to feel isolated. When they came to BIGHORN and met agent Jacquie Burns, Barbara’s grin widened as the couple drove through the Canyons front entrance and she witnessed the perfect desert dream environment unfolding before her. “I couldn’t help but smile, because the ambiance was so beautiful!” she remembers. After touring a number of possibilities, Barbara fell in love with their future home on the Canyons, starting with its location. “The protected preserve is what got me,” she says. “I knew we could have the feeling of complete seclusion and enjoy the incredible mountain range as well as the sunrise and sunset views.”

The Wernicks’ home combines their love of contemporary furnishings with special 1960s’ influenced art by Bernar Venet and Edward Dugmore. 81

So the original Southwest-style motif was transformed into the ideal desert contemporary home for the Wernicks. In remodeling every room, Barbara was able to create dramatic, custom spaces for their very distinctive mid-century contemporary art collection. Barbara adds, “When we open up the glass sliders to our outdoor living room, our Edward Dugmore paintings (shown on page 78) blend beautifully with the colors of the succulent garden, mountains, and preserve beyond. Now that I have remodeled the home, I never want to leave!” The Wernicks may be considered one of the largest collectors of Bernar Venet, a 1960s conceptual artist known for his sculptures resembling scribbles and arcs. Venet believes his sculptures are about how metal resists man, which often becomes a battle between him and the piece of metal during the creation process. In the Wernicks’ homes, at BIGHORN and on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles, Venet’s work can be found making a statement throughout – and making the homeowners proud of their collection.

wandering to The Marketplace, going to dinner with Sandy at the Canyons Steak House, and enjoying family time at all the wonderful family events. After a busy week of work and volunteering at Cedars-Sinai Hospital, where he has volunteered for over 10 years and even helped deliver a baby, Sandy is ready to hit the links with his buddies – his favorite way to take advantage of the beautiful courses and relaxed desert lifestyle. BIGHORN has proved to be an A-list community for the couple – a place that feels like home, looks like a movie set, and has a cast of vibrant characters to meet while on their breaks from the Hollywood limelight.

“We are very excited about the future of BIGHORN and the new Clubhouse,” smiles Sandy. “I am looking forward to hanging out with the guys in the new Locker Room.” Barbara takes advantage of the full list of amenities by

Family Time is BIGHORN Time Long-time desert residents since 2003, Dr. David Tahernia and his wife, Kimberly, made a conscious decision to move the family to BIGHORN in 2015 – and they have loved every moment! “We were at another club where we were definitely the youngest Members there,” shares David. “It just wasn’t the right fit for our active lifestyle. I have many friends at BIGHORN, and I have played in golf tournaments over the years. So after an amenities tour with Membership Director Mike Grenier we said, ‘We’re ready to move!’ It was the young average age and the 96 kids under 18 that really sealed the deal.” “Now we don’t remember what it was like anywhere else,” adds Kimberly. “I’m at the gym daily and love the talented personal trainers. Tennis Director Frank Fanning is amazing; it’s great to work out with someone so fun and gifted. In the evenings, our second home is the Canyons Steak House. We are there for family nights at least once a week plus a date night. It’s the perfect ambiance and the food is incredible!” “The golf courses are immaculate,” praises David. “There are so many different kinds of shots needed that you really work through all of your clubs as you complete your 18. I can come home at 4 p.m., grab my golf cart, and make it through in under 3 hours just as the sun is setting. Sometimes our son Alex joins me, and it’s fun watching his game evolve. He has so much power in his drive – but that’s natural for an 18-year-old!” “Living at BIGHORN, you don’t have to go anywhere. Everything is so convenient and the Members and staff are all really fantastic,” remarks Kimberly. “It’s a very special place that gives us more time together as family. We are so excited about the new Clubhouse and can’t wait to get inside and use all of the amenities!” 84

“We’ve made more friends here in the past two years than we made in seven years at the other club,” David adds. “Members here are incredibly generous, and everyone has experienced tremendous success. They are all very real, friendly, and interested in meeting new people. I learn so much from Members who don’t do what I do.” The family has clicked so well with their newfound friends in the community that last September the Tahernias traveled to Florence with a group to see Andrea Bocelli perform. What an experience! A Medical Calling For David, medicine was always in his blood. His father was a pediatric cardiologist, and his mother was a hardworking registered nurse in Tulsa, Oklahoma. As a child, David had a favorite teacher who was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease, “which was a death sentence at that time,” he recalls. Years later, when his brother Louis suffered a soccer injury and had to have arthroscopic knee surgery, his doctor videotaped the procedure. It was 19-year-old David who watched it over and over and knew that becoming a surgeon was his destiny. David studied Pre Med and graduated magna cum laude from the University of Tulsa where he was also a charter member of Phi Beta Kappa. In 1989, the University of Tulsa named him “Man of the Year” for his achievements in academics and sports. Dr. Tahernia earned his medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, completing his Orthopedic Surgery Residency and Surgical Internship as well as winning the Stanley Chung Award for Excellence in Orthopedic Research. During these years, his passion for spinal surgery was cemented: “I found every facet of spinal surgery to be fascinating, from the complex anatomy to the wide variety of disease processes. I wanted to help people who had experienced serious accidents and injuries.”

It was also at the University of Pennsylvania where David met Kimberly at a graduate school party. Kimberly was earning her master’s degree in Social Work after receiving her BA in Psychology from Purdue University. Kimberly was also raised in Tulsa where her father was Director of Business Services at Saint Francis Hospital, and her mother was a thriving entrepreneur and part owner of a Polo Ralph Lauren store, Peachtree Fashions, Adrian’s Beauty, and Mediterano Restaurant. During Kimberly’s junior year in college, she took a Developmental Psychology class and served as a research assistant on a study with one of her professors. She relates, “I knew at that point that I wanted to get my MSW and focus on clinical social work with children and families.“

Three years after their first encounter, the couple married and have been together for over 20 years. While in Philadelphia, Kimberly interned at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and worked at The Child Psychiatry Center in Philadelphia. There, she focused her efforts toward child abuse situations and family therapy. “I often had to take children away from parents who were not fit to take care of them and had seriously abused them,” she recalls. “It was a difficult job because these were people with whom you could not reason and who were often belligerent. But it was a calling for me to support the children I was able to help.”

85

The Tahernia family celebrates their holidays together at BIGHORN, at their summer home in La Jolla, or, most recently, in Turks and Caicos.

David completed a Fellowship in Spinal Surgery under the expert hand of Thomas G. Lowe, MD at the University of Colorado. In 2003, a recruiter from Desert Orthopedic Center (DOC) at Eisenhower approached David and, after a quick trip to the desert, the couple knew that the job was an ideal match. David and Kimberly, along with their three children, Alex, Nico, and Sophia (Chase was born in 2009), moved to the Coachella Valley where Dr. Tahernia is Director of the Comprehensive Spine Center and Medical Director at Eisenhower Desert Orthopedic Center. He is also Board Certified by the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, has coauthored numerous articles, delivers national presentations, and has been involved in several clinical research projects evaluating cutting-edge treatments for a variety of spinal disorders including cervical disc replacement, lumbar facet joint replacement, and treating fractures of the spine.

breadth of services,” David attests. “Eisenhower is at the same caliber or higher than a university hospital setting.” In turn, Eisenhower offers their praises of Dr. Tahernia. “David is dedicated to patient care, helping develop a comprehensive spine and pain program at DOC in addition to performing thousands of surgeries and engaging in research studies. He’s a friend that I’m glad to know professionally and personally,” shares G. Aubrey Serfling, President and CEO, Eisenhower Medical Center.

“Eisenhower Medical Center is the perfect-sized hospital blending efficiency, cutting-edge treatment, and a wide

“I’ve completed over 5,000 spinal surgeries at Eisenhower,” adds Dr. Tahernia. “And I’m ready to perform 5,000 more. I love what I do. My patients leave feeling better than they have in years. The most satisfying part of my work is having the opportunity to improve my patients’ quality of life, either through conservative modalities or with surgical intervention.

In 2005, Dr. Tahernia was the first surgeon in the Coachella Valley to perform a Lumbar Artificial Disc replacement, a newer type of spinal disc procedure that utilizes an anterior approach through the abdominal region to replace a painful, arthritic, worn-out intervertebral disc of the lumbar spine with a metal and plastic prosthesis disk. This procedure benefits the patient by maintaining spinal motion.

Dr. Tahernia proudly shares that new technology has afforded 50% of his cases to be considered outpatient or a 24-hour hospital stay. “Physicians are in a unique position to drive changes in health care. This position also presents numerous business opportunities that add to the excitement of being a spine surgeon,” he adds. “Still with that said, it still comes down to taking care of patients in the most compassionate and effective way possible. I never lose track of the fact that health care is a consumer-driven business.” 86

Family Time When you have a family with four kids – Alex, age 18; Nico, age 17; Sophia, age 15; and Chase, age 8 – your schedule is pretty packed. While dad David and Alex challenge themselves and each other at golf, Nico and Sophia love playing tennis with mom Kimberly. Chase has taken up basketball when he’s not building inspired alternate dimensions or saving the world in Minecraft.

Their BIGHORN life has developed more family time for them to enjoy together, in addition to hanging out with friends and meeting new ones. The family also enjoys volunteering locally at Gilda’s Club, Desert ARC, Brookdale Retirement Home, and other organizations through National Charity League.

87

Chase, age 8 Chase has been aptly named in that he is always moving 100 miles per hour, as most 3rd graders do. He is a goal-oriented kid and is fiercely competitive, as evidenced through the numerous video games he loves to play. You’ll find him building skyscrapers, mega mansions, and alternate universes as well as fighting zombies, dragons, and demigods like a pro. He has an incredible vocabulary and is considerably strategic for being so young. (But when your favorite game is Electronic Battleship and you live in an intellectual family, you tend to pick up the lingo!) He’s even invented a new game for his friends to play at Sacred Heart School while at recess, War of the Decade. Hopefully he will have time to play it, because his busy schedule also includes basketball, where he loves a good victory. See you on the courts, Chase!

88

Sophia, age 15 A true charismatic leader, Sophia is on the cheerleading team at Xavier College Preparatory where she loves to perform and root for the Saints. Her outgoing personality combined with her athletic ability makes her a natural performer, and she takes pleasure in every aspect of her school and her friends. She’s also super creative. Sophia enjoys the fine art of photography and has been inspired to learn and design through her photos. She appreciates that her brothers drive her to school because it gives them all time to become closer. In fact, Sophia says she looks forward to her 16th birthday when she can start driving her youngest sibling, Chase to school. While participating in both cheer and track, she also handles a very busy school load, volunteers through National Charity League, and loves having her friends over to hang by the pool or take a steam at the Spa & Wellness Center.

89

Nico, age 17 As a senior at Xavier College Preparatory, Nico is looking forward to studying Computer Science and Business. Considered immensely loyal, focused, and brilliantly smart by his family and friends, Nico is obsessed with sports – tennis, football, anything competitive – as well as rooting for the Pittsburgh Steelers! His favorite tennis player is Roger Federer, who he was thrilled to see compete locally at the BNP Paribas last spring. While he’s looking forward to coaching youngsters to play tennis, his schedule keeps him extremely busy playing on his school’s team where he has made some lifelong friends. A voracious reader, Nico says his English teacher, Mr. Byrne, has inspired him to think abstractly. He enjoys the classics including Brave New World, The Sun Also Rises, and The Great Gatsby. Oh, and he loves the quick trip to BIGHORN’s Marketplace for Starbucks Coffee and going to the Canyons Steak House for a ribeye steak. Great taste, Nico! 90

Alex, age 18 Considered introspective and driven, especially when it comes to planning his 401K from his job at a local coffee shop, Alex is motivated to receive a Business Administration degree from the University of California, Riverside. His goal: to become an executive at NBC or another Fortune 500 company. “I want to make a difference and implement change,” he explains. He actively plays golf with dad, “hitting drives as hard as he can,” works out in the gym, and works the closing shift at a local Starbucks where he excels in making the drinks and managing the assembly line. Alex takes a sense of pride earning his own money and is inspired by his parents to work hard and make it on his own. After recently graduating from Xavier College Preparatory, Alex will miss his family when he goes away to school along with the great friends he made in high school. Alex notes several teachers who have been a highlight of his high school years: Dr. Glazer, who is passionate about science and the environment, and Mr. Valovic, who brought economics to life. “He made us think more creatively about education and abstract concepts,” says Alex. Now that’s the mind of a budding executive at work.

When a masterful team truly understands the BIGHORN lifestyle, modernizing a classic Canyons Villa is easy. For 434 Morning Dove, the team included Developer David McFarland and a group of established developers, along with Kathy Blackbird and Bob Call of Blackbird Interiors. Together they instinctively brought out the optimum flow and open floorplan, maximized natural light, enhanced indoor-outdoor entertaining possibilities, then added the most detailed nuances buyers seek in a home. While preserving the signature look of the home’s original architecture, this dream team focused on lightening the space, incorporating sophisticated textures, adding dynamic

lighting options, and completely revamping the outdoor living room, pool, and front entry features. The results are outstanding! “The 3,500 sf floorplan had a solid footprint, allowing our imaginations to take advantage of the dazzling downvalley and Santa Rosa Mountain views,” says McFarland. “We brightened the palette and brought inside the natural, organic shapes of the outdoors. In the great room, we modernized the bar and bookshelves, selected classic yet contemporary furnishings, and lightened the pitched roofline, which created a fresh, inviting look for this incredibly visual space.” The sleek, elegant home now offers amenities found in brand new residences and was completed to be move-in ready. In the dining space, an innovative wine display room with tile surround is a chic and functional backdrop. Its cool factor plays well with the comfortable dining set and floorto-ceiling glass windows that redefine this intimate setting.

In the open kitchen, maximized cabinet space and a large picture window instantly updated the room’s usefulness and ambiance. Light quartz countertops and open shelving are the finishing touch. And the new bar seating is a must-have for families, home chefs, and casual entertaining.

“Breaking down the original sunroom to develop a tranquil yet interactive outdoor living room where everyone can enjoy the mountain, driving range, and city-light vistas was key to this successfully redesigned villa,” shares McFarland. “Homeowners will still have incredible privacy, but with a widened view, retiled and replastered pool, built-in new barbecue center, and multiple locations to enjoy the outdoors. Our thought process was the same with the entry courtyard where we added lush palm trees, an artful flow of foliage down the pathways, and a romantic firepit lounge where couples or family members can relax together. We also installed Control4 home controls, new air-conditioners, a hot water heater, and pool equipment for maximum efficiency.”

“The master suite received a full makeover by continuing the lighter color palette, adding luxurious bedding, opening up the views, and giving space for homeowners to move freely,” shares Blackbird and Call. “We opened up the office and designed functional but rich built-ins and desk furnishings. The master bath received a decadent modern spa treatment that involved changing out the shower tiles and bathtub and adding glittery pendant lighting. We broke through walls to expand his bath then installed gorgeous cabinetry and skylights to bring in soothing natural light. These dramatic changes make the bath feel like it has doubled in size and design.” Truly masterful from start to finish!
